being a hyyhist is so weird the source material is the most confounding inconsistent convoluted sloppily written thing ever the first person accounts are forgetful at best delusional at worst and the pdfs available online and the references it makes have been translated back and forth four times over in some cases so it’s unclear what’s actually going on when and where and why and how and yet here i am sobbing alone in my room at 11 pm over it bcs it’s also the most devastatingly beautiful story about youth and sacrifice and hope and the intrinsic grief of marginality and also the deep deep deep love we have for our childhood friends no matter what and no one fucking gets it. and also it’s kpop lore.

okay okay yes ur brain but now I must counter with: how would hyyh yoongi feel about hyyh jungkook asking him to put out a cigarette on him because I feel like it could go a couple ways, most obviously probably horror and disgust, especially if he did it, because it's burning someone he loves (mother parallels etc etc) and doesn't he always burn the ones he loves? isn't that why he has to burn instead? blah blah blah but then also there's the obvious instability of jk and yoongi maybe not being all that willing to say no to jk even if what he's asking is ~crazy and so he does it but feels horribly guilty afterwards? dfkdlfk maybe those are the same thing idk but pls share ur thoughts more you are so smart *kisses u so much if u want*
no exactly you see my vision jung-kook would ask exactly once and yoon-gi immediately freaks the fuck out feels totally repulsed by it, he probably wouldn't speak to jung-kook for at least a week over it bcs yes definitely the fire shit but even beyond that oh it's too real it's too close it's too naive it just shows him a side of jung-kook he doesn't want to acknowledge and proves to him just how far gone jung-kook is and that he probably even knows the implications of whats he's asked and doesn't care, thinks it's romantic even. and yoon-gi feels so freaked out about it bcs an ugly and gross and angry part of him wants to indulge him which is so so so fucked to him. i dont rly see yoon-gi doing so willingly but i can see jung-kook going as far as trying to force his hand. <3

"if theres such a thing as good and evil" is literally so true because the whole point of hyyh in how it draws from demian is this constant push and pull between the world of light vs the dark world, between the holy vs the profane, the good vs the bad, childhood vs adulthood, the vulnerability of innocence and being protected vs conscious responsibility of independence and regret. tae-hyung's character is neither good nor bad and thats why he's so disruptive in the grand scheme of things. because everyone is trying to either still be a child or be an adult, either be good or bad, either trying to be selfless or selfish. meanwhile tae-hyung is young, innocent, a little naive, but capable of making decisions with the rage and violence of a grown man. he's a good, kind, silly person who loves his friends but he's also damned, he's cursed, he has killed for his family. and so tae-hyung essentially forces the others to face the reality that the dichotomies they try to live by are pointless. tae-hyung even calls seok-jin out on it point blank; he who thinks himrself a saviour but was the one who snitched in the first place.

hey, can i ask how you were able to get such a good grasp on the hyyh storyline?? i'm asking because i've been a fan of their work for over a year but i was never able to fully comprehend the actual events of hyyh.
i have watched videos and learned some other stuff from comments here and there but the problem is that, although there seems to be a general consensus on some of the themes of hyyh, some people have different interpretations of what actually happened. not as in they have different interpretations of the meaning of the events, but rather the actual events themselves. i know this is inevitable considering the way the storyline was presented (through music videos that weren't in chronological order, mobile games (?), the notes, social media easter eggs, performances, etc.) but it's kind of discouraging to think that there will almost always be stuff you miss, you know? all the appreciation i have for hyyh comes from the few things i've been able to understand but i sometimes wonder if my analysis is completely off simply because i don't understand the storyline itself.
it seems like there's a lot of resources out there helping people understand references and metaphors but the problem is that i never actually know where their source is from (as in, for example they make a connection to another even that i didn't even know had happened).
what i'm trying to say is that i would love for you to maybe talk about your experience understand and analyzing hyyh and how you consumed it in the first place. did you just watch the music videos and hope for the best? do you think reading the works that were referenced in the story (demian, the ones who walk away from omelas, etc.) would help ones understanding of the events or is it of more help in terms of themes? did you use secondary sources? if so, do you have any recommendations for people that want to understand the storyline but are starting essentially from zero?
im so sorry this ask is so long lol. of course you don't have to answer it, i'm just really really interested in this and what you have to say, and i trust your judgement so.
hiiii omg of course! i think video essays and stuff are really great for understanding how the mvs depict the storyline and to get a good idea of the main themes and symbols, but when it comes to understanding the timeline your best bet is the notes! i got into the hyyh game veryyyyy late but i had read the webtoon when it was coming out, i watched the video analyses etc etc but it really wasnt until i read the notes that i felt like i really understood the key dates and the characters too. i think reading the books that inspired hyyh are totally secondary and not really necessary, especially that the direct references as so sparse in the grand scheme of whats concrete canon vs what is symbolism. watching the mvs first and watching a few analysis videos/posts first really helped me get interested but if you're looking to get invested in the characters, understand their motivations, and be able to link dates to the mvs i rly recommend the notes!
however, like you said, hyyh is incredible and annoyingly confusing and convoluted :') even the notes can be difficult to read bcs 1) they're translations so some details are lost or skewed and 2) there are a lot of double notes + notes that are from different timelines without any distinction of what happens when and where and 3) theyre just for the most part poorly written. like its just straight up poor sloppy writing lmao. and there's just soooo much BU content but the problem is none of it is really that consistent and its hard to gauge whats canon vs whats another attempt vs whats a hyyh/ARG nostalgia cash grab. and so its very difficult to remember absolutely everything. so honestly my advice is to keep it simple! no need to remember dates or anything, just key events is fine. the notes for the most part cover everything and there have been lots of fan translations in addition to the official book so theres always backup for more nuance!
tldr: i would highly highly highly recommend reading the notes for anyone interested in getting into hyyh, i think theyre rly the best bet for balance between canon and clarity. definitely feeds the other sources rly well and fills in a lot of the blanks!

how's the sangria? please talk to us about hyyh taehyung
ok so lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how the timeloop in hyyh acts as a reference to trauma, specifically trauma and complex chronic traumatization. nam-joon lives it in his constant state of poverty. jihope live it in their chronic mommy issues and their experiences of mental health stigmatization etc etc etc but I think the metaphor of the timeloop - whether or not thats what it was intended to be - works especially with tae-hyung because he’s the only one besides seok-jin who names that cycle. but the difference between him and seok-jin is that for seok-jin this is a fantastical time travel scenario but for tae-hyung and for anyone who has experienced long-term traumatization this is just part of the reality of living in an actively hostile, violent, unloving environment.
tae-hyung comments that he has seen himself killing his father hundreds of times and as the reader we know that its because of his dreams and the timeloop but we are also able to understand how he would see this as a given. the dreams and the visions are reflective of intrusive thoughts brought on by the cyclical nature of the situation. tae-hyung has lived the same violence on a loop since he was a child. he has never been able to escape it. he is stuck in his own timeloop. the only outcome is the destruction of that loop, of that world. a solution where he destroys the world he lives in and its maker - one where he turns the violence he shoulders outwards - becomes the only climax he can conceive of. like in demian, to escape his own personal timeloop, his world, tae-hyung breaks the aggressor/victim binary, breaks the evil/light binary, breaks cycle of trauma he is stuck in.
and thats why he is so dangerous and disruptive - because while seok-jin tries to find the cleanest way to break the literal cycle of violence his friends are stuck in, for the most part he pays little attention to the true, structural, metaphorical cycle they would be trapped in regardless of the timeloop. and tae-hyung, the one whose situation is the most directly reflected to the loop in its’ repetitive nature, recognizes this. and commits to action by breaking his and seok-jin’s cycle in a violent climax.
the sangria is very delicious btw.
