20 questions for fic writers

I was tagged!!!! thank you @ursae-minoris-world, you're truly so so kind to think of me.

I'll be real honest, I'm only on tumblr very intermittently and I don't really know how to use the platform at all. I'm scared that my formatting will be really messy and make people angry if I put a wall of text on their feed. So hopefully I figure out how to do the jump cut. But I just finished a fic so it's very fun to do one of these and talk about my writing. And I always like to see other people too, so I thought, hey I will give it a shot. Here's the questions:

How many works do you have on ao3? Right now I just finished my 74th work on ao3! Fifty four of those are vld, twenty four are sheith proper

2. What's your total word count on ao3? 993,716 words. I'm set to hit a million this year, I think!

3. What fandoms do you write for? LOL can you believe it? We're still loving Mr. Keith Voltron in the glorious year of our lord 2024

4. What are your top five fic by kudos? Oh well, my sk friends aren't going to be impressed--- my kl fics always take top spots for kudos and bookmarks. I attribute this not to talent or popularity but just because that side of the fandom has a much wider reach. For the sake of the questionnaire, I'll answer properly, in order: 'it's you that's haunting me' takes the top spot by a wide margin at 2,591 kudos to date. 'that mullet, etc' is currently at 1,788 kudos, and after that it's 'cross my heart,' 'swapping out silence,' and 'things that go bump in the night.'

5. Do you respond to comments? I do! for me, one of the best parts of fic is the community between authors and their audience. For the majority of my fandom life I've considered myself more of a reader than a writer, so I really treasure it when I leave a comment and an author responds. It's so special. As an author, I do respond to every comment, though sometimes it takes me a long time. I'm always so impressed that people are not only reading my words but digesting them and thinking on them too. It's wild to me. A very precious gift.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Oh, my friend, that fic is yet to come. the wip I've got on my closest back burner has a real humdinger of an angsty ending. I'm excited about it. hmmmm if I had to answer now.....I'm not sure! usually I'm a happy ending kind of girl

7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? well well well, now I have to answer this one properly don't I? Are we thinking happiest like 'biggest emotional pay off for the reader'? Or happiest like 'Keith is wildly happy' by the end? I think 'heart nailed open' has a very good emotional pay off (though I wrote it so perhaps I can't judge too well on behalf of the reader). If I am really thinking, in which fic is Keith truly the happiest he could ever be by the end...well, I try always to make Keith happy but, in 'the whole story' he has everything he could ever want AND a very nice couch.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Not routinely. I did, actually, get a very nasty comment on a fic in 2023 and it legitimately hurt my feelings. Made me feel like I should not be writing at all, actually. But, can you believe it? Friends came out of the woodwork-- people I rarely talk to, even-- and jumped in my comments section and really defended me. like, I really had all kinds of people on my side, defending me! So that meant a lot to me, and I was honestly so surprised, and I'd like to give every one of those friends the kindest hand press because I really did feel very taken care of in the aftermath.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Oh, I don't know! I have plenty of E rated fics but I don't know if I will ever master a true PWP. to me, the sex scenes I write are not so original or exciting, nothing to really write home about lol. I'm not a fan of publicly being negative about my stuff, so I will simply say that I wish I could write some really off beat toe curling wild kink, but it's probably just not my personality to do so LOL

Is this getting really long?? should I be embarrassed ? should I close the tab and never think on this again? hmmm no

10. Do you write cross overs? Cross overs with what, my dear? There's only one Keith

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Oh I think 'it's you that's haunting me' strolled on over to wattpad or some such site without my permission back in the day, but I've never really looked into it. What I don't know cannot hurt me, right? I highly doubt that there's been some crazy highway robbery for perfchan words.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? I don't think I have! But I did have someone ask to record a podfic for one of my stories, and I was so flattered and thrilled!!!!!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Nope! I don't have much interest in this, I am very shy about my writing and I fear I would be too cagey to be a very good collaborator.

14. what's your all time favorite ship? Keith x Being Loved and Cherished the Way He Ought to Be

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? (covers face) I don't have any unfinished WIPs.... it's not in my Type A personality to leave things undone.....

16. What are your writing strengths? This is something to really ponder!!! What /are/ my strengths!!! huh!!! well. I figured out early on that my favorite things to write are atmospheric and setting heavy -- both my most popular fic (it's you that's haunting me) and my most personally beloved fic (heart nailed open) have this in common: they have a lot of detail about the setting, and a lot of effort put into ~vibes~ of the story. so I think, if I could be self indulgent and chose which writing bits I'm good at, it's that type of thing. I really like crafting a scene you can settle into with all of your senses

17. what are your writing weaknesses? too many to list!!! I very often read my own writing and I always enjoy it (I wrote it for myself afterall) but sometimes I wonder....why did I spend so long on this particular bit? I think I am not very good at making a story tight. I wish I could master the art of being able to 'trim the fat' so to speak, really be precise with the story, but I simply don't have the chops! I can never understand how to make it better than I already have! perhaps if I keep writing long enough, I will get better at this

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? this question would really open up a can of worms on the kl side of the fandom LOL. I will admit it, I've had Lance speak spanish a time or two. I don't speak spanish myself so in those rare instances I have been VERY careful to keep things straightforward and try really really hard to not be cringe worthy to native speakers

19. First fandom you wrote for? the first thing I posted online was a USUK fic in a hetalia LJ comm. I can distinctly remember the first time I ever read a fic with *there was only one bed* (it was usuk) and WHEN I TELL YOU MY EYES WERE OPENED. I was forever changed on that day. of course I wanted to try my hand at writing after that

20. Favorite fic you've written? You would ask me to chose a favorite of my children!!! Oh! I simply could not!!! No, seriously, it's 'heart nailed open.' I love that fic

Pt 3 of The Guide: Tin Can Brothers (or Tin Can Bros or TCB) the sorta sister company of Starkid, created by three of the founding SK members (who not *actually* brothers) they started off doing skits but have also made many projects. Totally worth checking put their skits too though they're great. Fun fact all of these except Ex-Vloggers and Idol Worship canonically actually take place in the same universe. You do not at all need to watch one to understand another or anything but in WWG they made references to SIS, SAF and Flop Stoppers and then in SISBIB made another reference to SAF so its just a fun neat little thing that they all take place in the same universe.

Ex-Vloggers. It isn't like any of their other projects you'll see me list. In fact I wouldn't really call it a project. Its just a short webseries. It's much simpler and lower quality, not bad I just mean that this wouldn't have cost much to do compared to the others. It's actually really good and underappreciated in my opinion. It totally gives me nostalgia for 2015 youtube era and also it points out how fake youtubers can be putting up a front for the camera.

Summary: boyfriends Kyle and Brendan run a YouTube channel together, doing different challenges and tag videos. To their audience they seem like total love birds but behind the scenes their relationship isn't doing so well.

Spies Are Forever (SAF). This is a musical all about spies. I cannot describe how great this. It's the most loved TCB project. It's one of my fave musicals over all. There's stuff I'd love to talk about more but it'd spoil it. Just know it's great. It's really good story.

Summary: after his partner dies on a mission Curt Mega finally gets back into spying after 4 years and he ends up uncovering a super villains plot to rebuild the Nazi empire. Trailer

Choose Our Destiny: Improv Adventure. It's an improv show! Every month they had a different theme and they would do it live and do polls to let the audience choose different things to happen next. This was actually originally don't a different website that is now defunct, due to this all the episodes were luckily put on youtube by some fans but unfortunately several of them have audio issues. CHALLAHBack Girl and Murder... On The Rocks are particularly bad offenders but I promise you gets better after a while and the episodes are really great.

Flop Stoppers. A short film musical with 4 songs that are all complete bops. It's a very fun little short film.

Summary: Two comic nerd YouTubers talk about their opinions on comics and movies on their channel. Until one day they're tasked with making sure one of the most hated movies by comic nerds including themselves is never made. Having to go back in time and kill the man who made it. Trailer

The Solve It Squad Returns (SIS/SISR/TSISR). A one act play that does also have two songs. It's a Sooby Doo parody and it's great the characters are so fun the jokes a fun. There's a few series moments but it's overall just really super fun and funny. Also there's only 5 actors, one for each squad member and then one that plays every single other character. And it's insane. There's literally a scene where it's just him playing every character and he has do these ridiculous quick changes and it's so funny.

Summary: The Solve It Squad is a gang of kids detectives well known throughout the world. When their dog Cluebert (Scooby) dies durning a case they whole gang breaks apart. 20 years later Scrags (Shaggy) has become apart of the FBI and his boss gives him the case that ended it all. He gathers the gang back together, Keith (Fred) who's become washed up and missing his peak in life, Gwen (Daphne) who became a self centered actor but is always stuck in a box of mystery solving, and Esther (Velma) who's became a druggie, to solve the mystery of who Cluebert's killer is once and for all. Idol Worship. A short film about how fake YouTubers are and how much fans idolized YouTubers. It's good commentary. Pretty funny. It's not my favorite but I enjoy it for sure.

Summary: famous lifestyle youtube influencer Ashley puts on a con but it is outed for being fake from production crew. Trailer

The Wayward Guide For The Untrained Eye (TWGFTUE/WWG). This is an amazing horror comedy web series and podcast. In the webseries there's two ppl making a podcast they also released the actual podcast they made so you get to see what actually happens vs what is told to the public. If you watch this let me know before you watch it because it's suggested to watch the webseries and podcast in certain order (basically alternating every other episode) and I'll send you a playlist of it in that order. Its got a really fun cast of kooky characters. It's a mystery you can try and solve along the way yourself. I love it.

Summary: Twin siblings Artemis and Paul Schue-Horyn work at the American Podcasting Network and are trying to get the spot to the host the new season of the podcast The Wayward Guide For The Untrained Eye. When a strange man from a weird small town comes in their office to pitch the story of the corrupt mining cooperation in his town the shrug him off. Until their boss doesn't like their idea the give to him for the new season, as a last stitch effort they pitch the strange man's story and their boss loves it. When they arrive in town and their lead dies and they find out about the possible existence of werewolves the suddenly have a lot more on their hands to deal with than originally. Trailer

The Solve It Squad Back In Biz (SISBIB, or Solve It Squad the Animated but no one really calls it that). Ofc you have to watch SISR first before this. This also technically isn't fully on youtube but it is currently coming out. It's four script readings of episodes for an idea of animated series of the solve it squad, none of its actually animated (the title sequence/song is an animatic tho). It's fun getting to see these characters and it's funny. Also I'll go ahead and mention they're also currently working on a Solve It Squad musical for the holidays and the plan is too perform live and also release digital tickets for it around this upcoming Xmas and then it'll come out on youtube around the Xmas after that. I'm just mentioning this so you know that the solve it squad is like an expanding series. Anyway.

Summary: Ep 1 SIS to the (Dog) Rescue. A tiger was stolen at the zoo and the squad has to find out who stole it, Scrags is still sad about Cluebert and gets a new dog, the dog is an idiot and ruins everything they do. Ep 2 SIS Takes a Chill Pill. Gwen's life is busy with the squad, acting and her family. So her and Esther take a day off to relax. Esther gets them on drugs bc that's their idea of fun and relaxing, meanwhile Keith and Scrags take care of Gwen's kids and turns out that's not very easy. Ep 3 SIS Cashes Out. There's a certain case Keith really wants to investigate, about a cool tech billionaire, but the rest of the gang doesn't want to, so he brings back a favor from when they were kids to make them investigate it and they end uncovering the truth behind the billionaire. Ep 4 SIS Says No To Drugs. Esther tries out a new drug while the Squad follows a trail to find out more about said drug leading back to a Russian Drug Cartal while Esther has to hide that they're on this drug. It's basically a total fever dream (which make sense). I'm gonna give you two trailers for this also. First one. Second one.

Ah, the Shiro hate has officially started, even from the side that once professed to love him. Stanning him has been a struggle since day 1 and I was a fool for thinking the ending would let me breathe. Let me die I don't want to be in this reality anymore.

I haven’t seen anything yet but I knew it would happen and lmao it’s happened before. I wasn’t expecting better from the fandom that constantly hated on clone Shiro because he “abused” Keith and has stayed quiet about Shiro’s messy arc from S3 and onwards until now. I don’t give a fuck anymore tbh I know a lot of ppl were fine with Shiro being a plot device for both the story and Keith (and literally, I’ve seen this shit in my dash) and with him lacking any sort of important relationship/interactions with other characters or even having a family back on earth so yeah, I can imagine how pissed off they are that Shiro wasn’t Keith’s trophy husband. How dare he, that asshole. It’s not like Shiro got tortured over and over then completely forgotten and stripped of his entire personality for no fucking reason and was a victim of bad writing right?

It's almost 2022 and some people still believe their own farts about how they were robbed of SK endgame and how everything was leading up to. When no, it was never on the table. K/ance wasn't either but the possibility and probability of it was infinity better than the negative number that was a mentor and his mentee/teenager and brother figure. That ship really rotted everyone's brain holes.

Literally this. I love Klance as much as the next person but I think there's something nice about the co-dependant side of Lance we saw the whole series finally making decisions for himself and starting his own farm. Likewise, Keith found his place in the universe helping people after being so lost for so long,,,,, both ending up single isn't BAD, just a lil sad for shippers. It makes sense characterization wise.

With this in mind, it's even more important that they DID marry Shiro off at the end. Shiro coped with the greif of Adam's death and found love again; they literally wrote Curtis in to make the point that it's NOT Allura, or Keith,or Matt, or anyone we know because Shiro has MOVED ON from Voltron and is starting a happy life.

So the fact that people ship Keith and Shiro, besides the weird nonce vibes and BROTHERLY relationship shows that they didn't even pay attention to the narrative, instead reducing it to some lowkey fetish of *owo* kEiTh AnD sHiRo

Hey! Thanks for your ask - While I dont feel like I need to defend any of my drawings, I will say that I drew that piece when voltron was in its first season, i believe.

As I'm sure you can tell from my feed, klance has always been my favored ship from vld, but at the beginning I saw the appeal of sheith, honestly, when we knew that shiro and keith were very close and not much else.

"Alright we have 569 orders to pack Toshi." You say to Shinsou "ok hold on." Shinsou said licking and blunt to finish rolling it. You grabbed a box of packages and put it in the living room the grabbing your computer to print out labels and receipts.

You light a candle and turn on some music (the song at the top) Shinsou puts the blunt to the side and starts labeling the packages and putting the orders together in this order costumers order, business card, thank you card, and receipt. You do final packaging and stamp for the mail marking each order off the list and putting it in the box of finished orders.

"Hey n/n wanna go get a tattoo tomorrow?"

"Sure but where?"

"You remember Sero and Denki from Highschool?"

"Yea."

"Well they opened a tattoo spot on 58th." Shinsou said "Bet we can go." You respond putting another order in the box.

*DING*

"Who is it?" You ask Shinsou cause he pick up you phone. "Armoni." "What did he say?" "He said can he come over?" Shinsou responded "Are you ok with him coming over?" You say "Yea." "Ok then tell him Its ok."

You and Shinsou start back in the orders soon finishing them. "I'm tired as fuck." You say flopping down on the couch "Get untired sweetheart cause your brother is coming over and we have a blunt to smoke and food to order." Shinsou said while laying across your legs.

Shinsou lit the blunt and hit it a few times. I looked at him as he let the smoke move out his mouth softly blowing with his head back. "Like what you see?" Shinsou said looking at me with a cocky smirk thats when I noticed I was staring "shut up and pass the blunt." I say. Shinsou chuckled and gave me the blunt. I did the same thing as Shinsou but blew o's "stop trying to show out n/n." Shinsou said taking the blunt "boy ain't nobody 'showing out'." I say putting up quotation marks with your hands.

We pass the blunt back a forth a few more times until I got a notification from life 360 saying Armoni go to the apartment. Shinsou put out the blunt and put it with the spongebob rolling tray we had. I cracked the window and opened the balcony door a little bit and went in my room to put the orders away.

When I came out the room someone started knocking on the door kinda like the police (strong ass knock✋🏽💀) "Armoni Keith l/n how manys time do I have to tell you stop knocking on my fucking door like that." I say opening the door. " Dang Im sorry you aint gotta cuss at me n/n" Armoni said "Aye Shinsou where the hoes?"

I smack Armoni on the back if the head while walking past him to the living room "Ain't no hoes." I say coldly. "Yea Armoni ain't no hoes.... right now." Shinsou said smirking. "Nigga." I say with a straight face. "Im not finna do this with ya'll tonight." Shinsou and Armoni start laughing "ANYWHOO. Did you eat yet Armoni cause was finna order some food."

"Nah not yet." Armoni said. "What do ya'll want to eat?" I say walking into the kitchen with my phone to grab an water and then lean on the island.

"What about taco bell?"

"Armoni who the fuck."(sorry to the people who like taco bell) I say "ima have to agree with y/n Armoni. Who eats Taco bell?" "Uhh..obviously me." Armoni says.

"Awe naw you gotta go." I say "how about in and out? We can go out and get that." K said "im cool with that" Armoni says. "Ok." I say walking to my room. I got in to my room and pull out a pair of jogging pants and a oversized (fav anime) shirt and took off my bonnet and styled my faux locs

I grabbed my purse and house and car keys. "Yall ready?" I ask putting on my air force ones. "Been ready. We was waiting for you." Shinsou said.

Time skip

I start up my car using my remote start while we were walking to the car in the parking garage.

Everyone gets in the car. "LET ME PLAY THE MUSIC!" Armoni yells "STOP FUCKING YELLING." And it depends on what you finna play." I say turning around to look at Armoni. "Come on n/n let him play the music." Shinsou said looking at me tilting his head with puppy dog eyes. "I guess." I say rolling my eyes. "Just dont play no trash shit." I said looking at him through the rear view mirror. "Ok ok and i was going to say yall had to cause yall smoked with out me." He said making this face '😌' "boy.."

"shhhhhhhh" Shinsou said putting his finger up to your mouth and pointing to the steering wheel. "Food." I side eyed him and started backing out the parking spot and driving out the garage. Armoni start playing Nba youngboy. As much as I wanted to turn it off Shinsou wouldn't let me so we had to flow with it.

"Sk machine guns its two of us wit four nines!" Armoni rapped with the song (in control-nba young boy only song i can get down to🙌🏽 edit- i put the wrong song🙂 if you listen to yb just ignore that🧍🏽‍♀️) I turned down the radio. "What do yall want from here?" I asked they both said what they wanted and i went inside and ordered the food. As im waiting a guy comes up to me "Damn, what a fine girl like you doing out by yourself." He says "ahaha" I said sarcastically "getting food." I say still looking down at my phone. As me and Armoni are just chilling the car I see y/n coming out on in and out but she getting stopped by someone "who the fuck.." I say "what wron... oh shit" Armoni says. "You know who that is?" Armoni asks me. "Not at all." I tell him. Im not gonna lie i was jealous. But like fr who is that. I see y/n put her phone back the guy tried to hug her but she away "she dont want em" me and Armoni said at the same time and busted out laughing

"What are yall laughing at?" Y/n said opening the back door putting the food in the car. "You petty for doing that to that dude." Armoni said trying to stop laughing. "Awe well he was the on that didn't realize." Y/n said " But you still gave him your number though ." I said. "Yea Im finna block his number rn." Y/n said pulling her phone back out.

Y/n's pov

"Aye. Disconnect from my car now." I said to Armoni "whyyyy?" Armoni whined. " Disconnect or get out. Either way your still disconnecting just the second one your walking." I said smiling at him "ok ok"

I started playing my playlist.

We got back to the apartment and everybody got comfortable and we ate and watched movies Armoni went into his room and got in the bed around 3 am. Me and y/n were still in the living room. Y/n was laying on me and I was laying on the couch.

"Hey y/n..." she fell asleep on me. 'How cute' I chuckled and just stayed there not wanting to wake her up to put her in her bed. I kept watching f/a that Y/n had put on after Armoni went to bed.

uhhh i think the next best place to start would be Lancelot and the hart with the white foot. its a dutch text and short but its so good... i adore this text maybe just cus i spent months hunting it down but i do love it to bits. it takes one of the most commonly used root stories and makes it about lancelot <3 so like poggers (heres a link to my scan of that) 

from there ...... i bully him a lot but chretien de troyes Knight of the Cart is one of his good works and honestly really fun (tw for suicide tho like please be careful of this bit. i feel like trigger warnings arent talked about a lot in regards to arthuriana but they are needed here. no one actually dies but its good to know). 

i have a link to the doc with all of his works, but i personally have a version on google docs to fix the main issue i have with that pdf (very low visibility, SUPER long paragraphs with no spaces) also i changed a few words i think . dont remember exactly. its a bit longer and more dense but i also really like lanzelet :-) itsss the german version of some of the older lancelot tales and its just kinda funney. lancelot gets married a bunch and then at the end just lives out his life with sebile . wlw/mlm solidarity u think . dm me for that one i dont have the source of the pdf on hand whoops

uhhhm from there there are the longer two works that include him (the vulgate cycle+its additions which arent worth it, and le morte d’arthur) 

the vulgate is hard to get but pm me i have the first bit scanned if youre interested. its long and goes into more depth about lancelot as a person than any of these. 

le morte is le morte. its kinda the most well known text and while on one hand i love it, you shouldnt read the full text first. i say this as someone whos read both versions, but keith baines has a shorter and more succinct rendition and makes it way more fun. if you do wanna read the original text go for it but its like 900 pages and most of it is a slog to get to the fun bits. 

we have. half a scan of baines but honestly ill sit down and do that this week and get teh full thing up if anyones interested. u can aslo find the full text on project gutenberg here. 

uhmmm other than that lancelot just kinda appears in other shit mostly without much involvement. i like him in Morien which is a short and sweet dutch tale, i like him in most the dutch tales really. the dutch are sooo good ill grab reys post on how to read those too. uhmmmmm hes in some renditions of the prose tristan which i think is funny, and hes in my personal favorite of those(/the only one ive read) the povest in which he and tristan r dumb homos. wait threes also Lancelot of the Laik but im ashamed to admit i havent read that one. i do have it on hand tho so hmu.  

for something more modern uhm the only modern author i trust is Richard Hovey (modern is being used loosely here). his short verses and his longer verse project on arthuriana are both just so beautiful. The last love of sir gawain i think is especially killer (:-)) but also Lancelot and Guenevere, a poem in dramas is literally maybe one of my favorite works ever. its nice. ill hunt down a copy if anyone asks. if not hovey, robinson’s Lancelot from 1921 is so beautiful it made me cry a lot. its longer but so . SO good. ive made a comic of a bit of that one too OIET$PWGJYH.

How come it seems like lm and jds can talk more candidly about their intentions regarding other ships like allurance and even k/l but not sheith? I don't understand why they can clarify things like allurance and how it was there from the beginning or flat out state that they never intended for k/l to be a thing, but when it comes to the topic of shiro and keith they won't just clarify what they did or did not intend/want their relationship to be? I'm confused by it. :(

Ooof this is an excellent question and I suspect a complicated one. 

First off, they can be candid about Allurance because 1) it’s a hetero couple (and therefore “acceptable” to executives and conservative parents) and 2) it was strongly implied and built up for almost the entirety of the series before they officially, canonically, became a couple. There’s no ambiguity there. They can be candid about kl because Allurance technically “kills” the ship by virtue of existing, but more importantly kl is the fanship that they have been directly asked about on more than one occasion and probably straight up badgered about it more times than we’re aware of. When your production studio gets blackmailed in the hopes of making k/l canon, that ship is being brought to your attention. 

Also, Afterbuzz is run by kl fans who have anti-like tendencies. They angle kl questions in nearly every interview, and I was pretty miffed by the way in this interview they heavily, heavily implied that only Sheith fans hated s8 “because their ship didn’t become canon” and yet in the same breath talked about how Allurance wasn’t good and came out of nowhere (something JDS delightfully shut down). In the live chat for the recent interview, people from all ship alignments kept begging the hosts to ask about why SK’s friendship wasn’t included in the final season. In the saltiest tone you can imagine, one of the more vocal kl hosts decided to answer the question (”they helped each other grow and evolve and since they’ve done that, we don’t need to see their friendship anymore, it got lots of screentime in other seasons”) and never let the showrunners actually speak on it, instead moving swiftly to another topic that aligned more with the hosts’ own interests. It was almost like she was afraid of what the answer would be. Was she afraid they’d say “well actually, on the matter of that, Sheith was our intended endgame” or was she trying to save them from having to talk about something NDAs prevented them from talking about? 

So why CAN’T they talk Sheith? I have a few theories. This gets long and a little rambly, so I’ve thrown it under a cut. 

1) Don’t ask, don’t tell. Except for post-s7, the showrunners themselves have never been asked about Sheith’s relationship in an interview. I think most Sheiths were afraid of rocking the boat and potentially upending a SK endgame by drawing too much attention to it. We were/are definitely the quieter side of the primary vld ships and honestly most of us were not expecting our ship to be canon. 

But vld ships and the ship wars are notorious across geekdom for vitriol and death threats, and the creators didn’t want to add any fodder to either side. In the middle of production it would have benefited no one for the EPs to say, “yeah sheith is meant to be viewed romantically” or “no, we can’t go back and change the story to make that true”. Either one would have resulted in an uptick of harassment from antis towards them, towards other fans. And nevermind the production side where DW/WEP weren’t ready for even a hint of m/m until right before s7 dropped. It was only AFTER they got the greenlight on gay Shiro that showrunners could finally be vague and say “some people will interpret [sk] as brothers, others will say it’s 100% confirmed they’re in a relationship”. Which is, in my opinion, a pretty interesting way to respond to that question. But again, if that interviewer hadn’t been brave enough to ask it, I highly doubt it’s something that the showrunners themselves would have ever brought up.

2) Sheith was actually intended to be romantic, but was blocked. We know now that Adam being greenlit as Shiro’s boyfriend happened right before (like a week or less) before s7 dropped. This was a show that had been in production for almost 4 years by this point, and the showrunners stated they picked Shiro to be their rep early on in the process. When they planted that idea in executive’s heads is anyone’s guess, as is when the proper fight for it began. I suspect their immediate team of directors, writers, and in-house producers were well aware and supportive, but kicking that up the chain was another story. I also have a suspicion that it wasn’t until season 6 was complete that the matter was brought up because greenlighting everything we got in s6 knowing Shiro was gay the whole time puts a lot of eyes on Keith. 

And really, it was Keith who was the problem all along. 

In every version of Voltron, Keith is the main protagonist. He’s the leader of the team, the primary “image” of Voltron, and thus, certain things about him need to be maintained. I’m not sure if this is sheer coincidence or not, but he is the only person on the team who stayed visually the same to his OG counterpart. All of the other paladins have gone from white dudes (and a white lady) to POC, or have had a genderswap. There is much debate about Keith’s race with people creating their own headcanons but ultimately Keith can pass as white. While the handbook states Lance is Cuban, Hunk is half black-half Samoan, Shiro is Japanese and even Pidge gets “Italian”, Keith is just listed as... human. Which is a surefire way to not upset fans who have HC’d him as POC while also not-NOT saying he’s white. Everybody “wins”. 

In addition I’m confident a major stipulation of the OG Voltron owners (the “gatekeepers”, as a few of the VAs and the showrunners themselves have darkly alluded to) was that Keith could not be LGBT. We know now he was meant to end up with Acxa, a fact that was already obvious to many of us from their Weblum meetcute. But that relationship was never scripted. 

Setting aside the fact that the OG Voltron owners (WEP) didn’t want Keith to be LGBT, I’m sure executives at Dreamworks would have struggled with the idea as well. Shiro stans can come at me all they like about this but Keith was always meant to be the primary protagonist of the show, of every version of Voltron, and making the main, masculine hero of a well-trodden, oft-rebooted franchise gay/bi would have been an ENORMOUS move for animation. Making him end up with the other main, masculine hero would have honestly broken the internet and the minds of countless conservative executives, and been a major benchmark not just for cartoons, but ALL media. Animation often trails behind TV and movies in terms of social progress because something something “protect the chillllldrennn”. And right now I’m struggling to think of a popular live action TV show, or movie, with an older audience, where the main masculine hero is lgbt, and in a relationship with the other main masculine hero. Feel free to offer me examples in replies but the fact that I’m struggling to think of anything is pretty telling. In short, if this revolutionary move still isn’t happening for the live action 13+ audience, asking for it to happen on a cartoon with a 7-11yo boy demographic is like asking for the moon. Keith couldn’t be gay, because immediately it would have been obvious to anyone that he was already very much in love with the other LGBT character on the show. Hell, it’s already pretty obvious in canon that this is the case, and dodging the question about his sexuality is dodging the confirmation that he’s in love with Shiro. 

I’d like to believe that one of the solutions to the Adam Problem that was proposed was that KEITH ends up with Shiro, but they were laughed out of the office. The pair’s incredibly close bond aside, it would have been the absolute easiest fix production-wise. They already have their shared history doing most of the legwork, all that’d have to be changed is:

-adding Shiro to the L/K scene in 8x01, just sitting there as Keith encouraged Lance.-Re-recording a couple of Shiro’s lines in 8x05 to make him seem at least somewhat upset that Keith was kidnapped-Showing Keith and Shiro hanging out in the video episode. You could just use the shot of Keith and Pidge but replace Pidge with Shiro.

And the best part is, you could change just one or two of these and then do the wedding epilogue you always intended (but write something that doesn’t insist Shiro retired) but with Keith instead of Rando. Not to mention, there is a slight, slight possibility there was a S/K scene (or two) cut along the way. I strongly disagree with the theories that have floated around about the “massive edits” done to s8, but I think there could be truth to the idea that a Sheith scene was cut to make room for Crew Member, or an effort made to downplay the Sheith friendship that comes off way more intimate than any interaction Shiro has with [man]. It’s more likely that SK scenes never existed at all in this season as the showrunners had to cave to pressures to “have more action”, had no idea what to do with Shiro besides relegate him to a stiff cardboard general, and perhaps had to follow strict instructions about the kind of friendliness an out & proud gay man could show to the men he’d enjoyed good interactions with before. 

All this to say, the Sheith battle is messy. It’s fine for the showrunners to say “getting the greenlight for Shiro was a battle” because it’s a battle they won that makes everyone look pretty good. It makes Dreamworks look like they Learned Something and are going to be more open to LGBT content in future properties. It makes WEP look not-terrible because they can add “allowed a character who wasn’t really an OG Voltron character to be gay” to their list of “generous” things they allowed for this re-envisioning of their property. It’s self-congrats all around.

Blocking Sheith has the opposite effect. It reveals that WEP is homophobic because they could allow Pidge to be a girl and Allura to be black but making the hero a non-straight man? That’s TOO FAR. It reveals that Dreamworks higherups are homophobic because they weren’t ready for two LGBT protagonists, just one plus a background character with 3 lines who is literally never named. No one wins, and to be asked about Shiro and Keith and be honest about it could potentially be the showrunners saying, “god, we wanted to, but we were blocked at every single turn”. And thus DW and WEP are the outed villains of the story.

3) Shiro and Keith were never meant to be read as romantic. The showrunners don’t say anything because there’s simply nothing to say. Sometimes the most incredible ships are happy accidents. Sometimes people genuinely don’t realize what they’re doing. I felt a little disheartened watching the AB interview because the way they talked about wanting to include more [man], or how they “hoped viewers would read between the lines” re:Shiro/Curtains, was so casual and flippant it was like they genuinely thought most people would be fine with Shirando if only there had been more scenes between them, as though completely severing Shiro’s relationship with Keith and instead only showing scenes of Shiro bonding with a new character would come off as a good move rather than a baffling (and somewhat hurtful) one. 

I do believe that certain directors were absolutely fans of the pair and angled in what they could. Chris Palmer is behind the famous “shiro loves you baby” art and responsible for the eps that include Shiro’s gay panic, the Sheith hug, “As many times as it takes”, Shiro falling into Keith’s arms, and “We have to stop, Shiro’s out there!!” among others. Steve Ahn was the director behind 2x01, 3x01 with heavily grieving Keith, Blade of Marmora, and the episode where Keith screams Shiro’s name so loud he astral projects and then Shiro holds his hands over the controls. He also got really soft when he talked about the pair in an episode of Form Podcast (before JDS kinda hastily shut him down). And even Eugene Lee, he directed The Black Paladins which is an episode so Sheith I still can’t believe it’s real, and 7x01, the other episode so Sheith I can’t believe it’s real. All three of these guys were the original series directors, which is pretty inchresting. 

But that doesn’t mean the showrunners were necessarily onboard. Maybe it was really important to them to show a positive male friendship since that never happens in media, just as they felt having Allura sacrifice herself was a powerful feminist move. However the thing I keep circling back to is JDS’ early interview about The Winter Soldier and how if he ever got the chance to do that, he hoped it would be in the future when things could be more progressive, hinting that he wanted to throw more overt romantic undertones if he himself ever got a fight like that to write or direct. It’s pretty interesting that he wrote the Black Paladins, which mirrors the Stucky fight in Winter Soldier so much that it actually rotoscopes one of Bucky’s moves. I’d also point out that JDS’ favorite characters are Shiro and Keith, and I find it impossible to be a fan of both and not also be a fan of how much they love each other, and how much that love straddles the line between romantic love and friendship.

This got long, but I hope it was helpful. The likely final-ever showrunner interview will be on Let’s Voltron sometime this month, and I do hope that now that the series is over someone is brave enough to ask them, “so... what was going on between Shiro and Keith? In a perfect world, what would have happened there?”. In a way it doesn’t matter though. There is always the risk of them saying “nothing was going on there” and us agonizing over whether that was a lie to protect their careers or bald-faced honesty in the face of an NDA or fucks-given that might have expired with their contracts. 

But I think the best we can hope for is the same situation that happened with the Avatar creators and that live action movie: 3 years from now when the NDAs are well and truly expired, JDS & LM may come out and say, “SO, on the matter of Shiro and Keith, it’s time to come clean.”

First off your metas post S8 have rocked my WORLD!! I know you're working on the massive meta on Lotors erasure and i just wanted to note that while i know youve said before you dont see kl happening do you think you could keep an eye out for anything there too? I know its probably unlikely but i know ur mutals with astro_latte and her lotura/klance tweets have made so much sense. Especially with the NYCC poster! Lance and Keith just seem to have something you know? The sunset? The handholding?!

I usually do my best to write my metas as ship-neutral as possible; so that they can be enjoyed by as wide an audience as possible. Admittedly I do have a ship bias towards Lotura - but and even then when I’m writing these analyses I stick to what the text is telling me, and only elaborate with my best educated guesses.

I know it seems like I’m writing my posts from a ship perspective first before a plot perspective, but what I’ve found is that Lotor and Allura’s relationship is so thoroughly woven into the story that it’s nearly impossible to talk about the plot without talking about Lotura.

VLD is not a show with a romance added onto it for flavor, like most western cartoons, it’s a story where one of the primary plots is the romance. That’s why the removal of Lotor from s8 fucked it up so badly. You can’t just switch the endgame alpha romance on a whim here: it’s integral to the show having a satisfactory conclusion! Unfortunately, this also means that when we talk about the major issues with s8 it’s easy to just dismiss this stuff as ‘shipping drama’, when it really really isn’t.

Most romances in cartoons don’t have much thought put into them. Lotura did. It was written very purposefully and had a lot of work and love put into it.

VLD is written as a two-pronged coming of age story: one half of that is Keith, with his leadership arc and his reunion with his family, and the other half is Allura. Allura’s arc is a classic - yet beautifully done - Heroine’s Journey. With respect to other ships, those I mention are only the ones that I’m finding actual textual evidence of being there.

I have many good friends in both the sk and kl fandoms, and I’ve resolved to stay as far away from that particular debate as possible. I have no horse in that race, and taking sides is only going to hurt the people I care about.

I will be talking about interactions between the character pairings that represent both of those ships, as well as interactions between Pidge and Lance - as I believe there was a subplot in s8 with the two of them that was cut. Whether you readers wish to take the evidence I uncover as romantic or platonic closeness is up to you. Lotura was the alpha romance in VLD, and thus its removal left obvious wounds in the plot. Beta and tertiary romances leave less obvious marks, and while I can say that particular scenes involving pairs of characters have been removed, I cannot tell you the exact content or nature of those scenes.

I am keeping my eye out for any evidence of anything I can find. I will not be discriminating based on ship. I am also not all knowing, and have my own biases and pitfalls; it is completely possible that I might miss things or misconstrue something.

The only ship I can say for certain was not endgame in the original s8 is a//urance; if it was there would have been no reason to sloppily edit the season into it being so.

Jesus fuck I did it, I drew the whole gang. This was...so much harder than I thought it would be.

I'm iffy on Honey-oat's (Hunk) design tho. I like it because he's extra fluffy, but hm, dunno. Doesn't look too much like him. Other than that, I'm satisfied with everyone else's designs! ^^

So, from left to right we have Blueberry (Lance), Moonshine (Shiro), bunny right in the center is Honey-oat (Hunk), Foxfern (Keith), and Applemint (Pidge).

I know Honey-oat looks super big here, but he's currently standing on his haunches, so he looks way bigger than he really is. Moonshine's actually the biggest bun here, especially at his full height. Honey-oat is a two-toned bun with a coffee brown top, and a dark brown secondary coat color.

Blueberry is just long-limbed and thin af, so he kind of looks like a borzoi had a baby with a rabbit 😂 He's a nice cinnamon brown color with a white streak from his nose to the bridge of his snout.

Fowfern is small, especially for an adult his age (fyi he's closer to Moonshine's age like s6-7 SK), but it's due to him being a runt. He has lean body that's all compact muscle, which makes him deceptively strong. He has a black streak running from the top of his head down to his tail, while his main coat color is reddish-brown, with a white underbelly. Foxfern absolutely finds Lieutenant Moonshine handsome, but you didn't hear it from me

Moonshine's design was probably my favorite to work with. Part of his design that I enjoy is that he seems really intimidating to anyone who doesn't know him since he literally looks like the physical embodiment of the Black Rabbit of Inlé, but the only thing that keeps him from being called as such is the white patch on his chest (meant to be an 8-pointed star), his white fringe, and the "sock" on his right leg. He's a huge sweetheart ofc and he has a near embarrassing crush on his best friend, Foxfern.

Hey, I read some of your posts about Voltron stans and you are absolutely right. As a Keith stan sometimes I have to take a step back and remind myself not get to overzealous and hate Lance. I just remember a time when Lance stans flooded Keith’s tag with hate and I usually take it out on Lance because it made me so mad. But Lance doesn’t deserve my hate because of his stans just like Keith didn’t deserve or Shiro or anyone else. I’m glad I found you. You put things in perspective.

aw thanks! and yeah it’s tough, i really do sympathize. i’m not that old but i’ve been in a few fandoms and i know that people are always gonna cling tight to their favs. and you totally should, i’m guilty of this too, if anyone tells me that they don’t like lance i take it personal bc i love him so much lol 

but yeah the bad side of that is that you either go into the tags and start ripping on other characters bc you think yours is better or you start hating the favorite characters of said people who go into the tags and rip on other characters bc they think theirs is better. pretty sure i’ve seen every character in voltron get shit for something ridiculous, although i noticed that lance shiro and keith got it the worst seeing as how they were all embroiled in the main shipping conflict in the fandom. there was a very clear “kl stans hate shiro/keith” and “sk stans hate lance” dynamic that got very boring very quickly. 

idk i don’t like taking the time to hate characters that are not designed for me to hate them. the main ensemble cast are filled with wonderful, beautiful, quirky characters that are each special in their own way. and maybe it’s bc i multiship so much but i don’t think you have to automatically hate one character bc you like another or hate a character bc you ship this. everything’s cool, everything’s valid, it’s just fandom, we’re all here to have fun, and it’s no fun to hate stuff all the time.

so it's probably kinda awkward to drop in like this, but I just wanted to thank you for posting about your SK thoughts. as a multishipper, it bothered me so much how SK shippers' toxicity was never called out, despite both KL & SK having some entitled shippers. SK's shippers had this feeling of aggressive superiority, like if you weren't an anti & you liked shiro, then SK was the only "real" ship. it still makes me feel bad tbh, so I'm glad you discussed it. muchos thanks!! ✌🏽🎉👏🏽

Hey, it’s no problem at all and this is definitely not awkward. 

I think it’s important to call out a ship’s toxicity if you can because it’s something that needs to be said. And I’ve noticed that a lot of SK shippers can be incredibly rude and mean towards other ships within the Voltron fandom. It’s gotten to the point where it’s too much and other shippers can’t ship their favourite pairings in peace. All that anyone needs to do is respect each other’s preferences and characters and leave the hate where no one else can see it.

It’s also another scenario where I can see the appeal of the SK ship but the majority of the stans have made it quite impossible to like. 

I can honestly go deep into how SK and KL and their love for Keith is really...bad but I’d end up writing such a long post. And this is coming from me who adores Keith but hates how people refuses to recognised the flaws that he has and how the creators of Voltron handed everything to him on a silver plate due to bad writing. 

I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS BUT MAYBE FOR ANOTHER DAY.

But I’m glad and I hope it made you feel better. And it’s important to remember that SK isn’t the real ship and Shiro can be with/fuck whoever he wants and Keith isn’t his ‘one and only’ so don’t worry about it, Friendo.

Do you think that if (worst case scenario) they put Shiro back with A it would be bad writing? I mean we only got one scene of a breakup vs. all this build up with his relationship with K.

Yes. 100%

Why only introduce A in season 7? I know he was supposed to appear S2E1 in the flashbacks, but even if he was introduced then, he is only a plot device. I hate to break it to all the S/A shippers (and anti SKs) but he is a plot device meant to show the dedication Keith has for Shiro. It is a direct comparison of Shiro’s previous (romantic) relationship with A and his current (platonic. maybe more?) relationship with Keith. 

If the writers wanted A and Shiro back together they would have developed their story much earlier. They would have put him in more flashbacks or introduced A in a positive light, but they didn’t. Like LM said, “It feels like a very real conversation that maybe is a little too adult for some of our younger fans.” It’s normal to move on. Relationships can change. Hard decisions will be made. This was something Shiro had to leave in the past. 

You could argue that it’s hard to put lgbt rep into a kids show and I agree! It is difficult. But if you want a lgbt relationship to resonate with your viewers, you want a relationship built on friendship and unconditional love which Sheith is. Throughout every single season, we see the development of their relationship.

It’s not subtle. We don’t have to dig for little hints or read deeply into it. It’s there. Their relationship, gradual development, friendship, and love is right in front of us. I’m happy that A was introduced S7 because we got to see the development of a partnership that contains so much of what ultimately ended Shiro’s previous relationship. 

Even if the writers were to bring S and A back together, they’d have to bust out a lot of plot development for those two to make up for the years they have been apart. Both have grown as individuals lightyears away from each other. I’m sure they had a beautiful relationship before and I am so grateful for that, but it’s in the past. Based on the reviews I’ve read, I don’t think we’re going down that route. Shiro has a family now. He has a team. His time in space has put himself into hard situations and opened up his perspective on so much more. I don’t think he’d go back to the life he previously lived after the what the universe has given him.

This is probably a stupid question, but I really want to know. When LM said that Shiro and Keith's relationship, fans will see their relationship as either brotherly or in a confirmed relationship, do you think she means for the rest of the show, including the last season, or just season 7? Because I really want open-ended Sheith, and not have either of them get forcibly paired off with someone else. Shiro already lost the man he was going to marry, and if he's not with Keith, then with who?

i think it’s important to remember not to let these statements carry too much weight. personally i interpreted it this way - they understand that some people see their relationship one way, and others another, and they don’t want to discourage either group of fans from doing so, so they’re making a neutral statement about the series as a whole. i don’t think there are any hidden hints for s8 here. the way it was worded was… woof, but you have to realize that a lot of times these interviews are transcribed from phone conversations and the people speaking don’t have the opportunity to go back and alter their choice of words. i think she was illustrating the two extremes of fan interpretation of their relationship, which is why “only brotherly” and “100% confirmed in a relationship” were used. that said… wow girl… 

I agree that i hope they get an open-ended ending, and i won’t lie that i’d be disappointed if one of them gets paired off, but i’ll still love and adore the show and everything SK did for each other no matter what. i still ship sas/unaru even though both those fuckers ended up paired off w/ women, that’s what fandom is for ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I put a lot of thought into answering this question and I think the reason why people think KL is a crack ship is because of their set-up as "rivals" and their interactions.

Shiro and Keith have one of the most intense relationships on screen and that's a given, because those two have been established as characters that have a very close bond. Since season 2 where Keith says "you're like a brother to me" to Shiro, we get further clarification as to why exactly this bond is so important even later in the series (season 6) where he doesn't say "like a brother", Keith says "you're my brother" kind of taking him as kin. My assumption to this line change is because he's learned to accept Shiro in his life ("like" implying he's still kind of keeping his distance) and that fight was iconic, and strengthened their relationship. Shiro is an important figure in Keith's life considering he's orphaned and its in his character to be wary of others. Based off my IRL's logic, who is (thankfully) not one of those people who genuinely think SK is going to be canon, the content that the show has provided on screen is enough to "drive imagination" as he puts it.

He thinks Klance is a crack-ship because how they interact with each other in the whole show isn't of the same level as Shiro and Keith's, where we've seen Keith being impulsively emotionally driven a LOT, especially in regards to Shiro and his own past. But he's never shown a "romantically driven" emotive err, response, in regards to Lance.

HOWEVER, its because they see it purely from Keith's perspective, which I believe has no real idea/realisation that Lance is important to him, at least not until the dust has settled (its the same way Misa behaved before realising her feelings for Hikaru, again, Macross Theory) Klance fits several romantic tropes to a T, everything from a meet-cute, getting stuck in a place together, “good team” and the development in their relationship is very clearly from Rivals to friends at first. Ep 1-2 they start off by showing how badly those two work together but the recent episodes of S7 show how much better they’ve gotten as a duo, considering most of Arc 2 (season 3-6) was instances of their teamwork slowly building, while also paralleling Allura/Keith’s interactions with Lance. Its very possible to see that its not romantic! And that’s fine because canonically, their relationship was built from the ground up. They had no real prior interactions, at least not ones that’ve made an impact on Keith as a younger person. Now in season 7, we get a multitude of hints at their earlier relationship (them both carrying coran, navigating through unknown territory, pidge doing the whole signing thing, shooting/fighting different targets to cover the other) because they’re trying to set up the idea that “Look they’re such good friends now!!!! Their teamwork is so good!!!” Being reminded, as a casual viewer, sets up the basis of comparison between then and now. Season 7 was a set up season in order to naturally progress K and L into a romantic relationship. The very first insinuation of a romantic relationship between Keith and Lance was “the bonding moment” where the idea was “we are a good team”. And now they’re a good team! The rivals to friends trope is complete and the show needs to reminds you that these two are paired together! What de-stabilizes their relationship is Allura, who’s Lance’s original love interest. From S1 to the first part of S7, Lance begins with incessantly flirting to hardly ever doing something like that, especially after the escapade with the space mice. That’s the time too where he begins to be drawn towards Keith, since he “oh wow so coincidentally” came back after being gone for a very long time with the blade. The smooth re-establishment of their relationship after Keith’s hiatus puts people (who don’t do re-watches/don’t see romantic Klance) back in the mindset of “wow, these two are interacting again!” and that is CRUICIAL into working into the arc of romantic pining/jealousy (that’s how Macross did it at least). They re-established the relationship between K and L in the first half of S7 (since they couldn’t do that at the end of S6) and in the second half, begin to challenge it by slowly incorporating the ideas of “romance” through Allura. In Macross, its hikaru and minmay getting together, that makes Misa realise she has feelings for Hikaru, and I would like to guess at least, that its how VLD’s going to approach the romance. I know this low-key turned into a theorising/analysis post so its a bit of a read sorry about that! I don’t expect Klance to be canon at least until the very last episode or two of S8.
