What do you think of the new transformers comic?

I LOVE IT. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. SKYBOUND AAUUUU oh my god I am nearly obsessed. It’s so good and I love the art and I love the characterization and I just KNOW it’s gonna get better.

I have my small irks with it ofc, I was a little offput by the sort of maybe ish implied arcee x ratchet but that’s just a personal gripe, so I’m not even that mad about it. I don’t think it’ll become canon anyways but.

I love starscream. I love unapologetically evil starscream. I love irredeemable starscream and you know what I love more? Angry soundwave.

I want (I HOPE, I PRAY) soundwave to get fed up with starscreams bullshit and finally do something. Soundwave is such a powerful and underutilized character I want skybound to actually let him take more control over the decepticons for once. Even for a short while until megatron comes back. Soundwave is always the “loyal guy standing stoically behind whoever is in charge” and I yearn for soundwave to get ANGRY and take matters into his own hands. Because god, if anyone can successfully lead the decepticons it’s that bastard.

I also am so so happy to see Jazz again. And Jazz is so wonderfully… Jazz. It’s perfect. He’s perfect.

THE POINT IS. I love it and I’m very excited for more. I have very high hopes and I’m so eager to see what DWJ has planned.

According to Felix Comic Art (linked in source) this art piece by Daniel Warren Johnson was used to pitch the Skybound comic series to Hasbro and, holyshitohmygod everything coming out about this series is looking so fun and good so far.

Man, look at my big buddy Bruticus, all those intricate little details in and around his armour. Look at the loml Starscream cackling in the smoke of destruction with his big personal war machine backing him up. I love this. This is incredible.

I have! I've been following it as it comes out and was completely enamored with it by the end of the first issue, which is why I wanted to read Do a Powerbomb (which also completely owns)

After IDW lost the Transformers license I kind of dreaded what a new publisher might do with the property. IDW had pushed Transformers into so many new and exciting directions over the years, giving me some of my favorite Transformers stories ever and shaping other parts of the franchise for years to come (and also making a ton of Transformers canonically queer). The last thing I wanted was for a new publisher to throw all that out and just go back to square one with easy G1 cartoon nostalgia. Especially after I ended up being really unenthused with the post-continuity reboot "IDW2" era, I worried that it could be years and years before we got another new Transformers comic that really spoke to me like the MTMTE/RiD era did

And then Daniel Warren Johnson's Transformers dropped from Skybound. Despite leaning so hard into G1 cartoon aesthetics, and despite being part of a new shared universe with the okay-but-not-amazing Void Rivals by Robert Kirkman and some GI Joe comics I don't really care about, I was cautiously optimistic because I'd previously heard really good things about DWJ's other work. And I've just been absolutely blown away by it. It's already one of the greatest Transformers comics ever made

From the very first page you can tell it's doing new things with the traditional Transformers iconography, while also tapping into the heart of the series better than anything else I've seen in years. The hand-inked art can be a little loose and messy, but that helps give it so much energy, ESPECIALLY in the inventive fight scenes. Whether it's vehicle mode action, Optimus doing literal wrestling moves on Decepticons, or even just a panel of someone transforming, there is SO much life in all of DWJ's drawings. But he also cares about tying things to the human cast in really compelling ways. We've already gotten so many good scenes between the robots and the humans that give it so much heart. The deer scene with Optimus and Spike went viral for a reason, it was instantly one of the best Optimus Prime scenes ever written. It's not just about the robots or the humans, it's about the dichotomy between them. He gets it

I love a lot of IDW's comics that are just about robots interacting with other robots many light years from Earth and barely ever even transforming on the page, but like. This is the comic you wanna hand to someone to be like "This is what Transformers is about. This is why it fucking rules"

Seriously, though. Anyone with even a passing interest in Transformers should be reading these. I am constantly on the edge of my seat waiting for the next issue these days. Look, Optimus literally suplexes Starscream in the first fucking issue YOU HAVE TO READ THIS

you know as far as starscream goes as a character, he has always been a villain and sadistic, so him killing those even close to him is not surprising. that doesn't mean it makes it any easier for me, i love starscream but i also love skywarp and damn that is something hard to accept that he killed a trine member.

but then i have to also tell myself that skywarp is also just as bad as starscream they were both killing people like it was no one's business. but still it sucks.

but i also like that we see that starscream isn't like how fandom likes him to be. he is evil and sadistic on his own when he is pushed. for a few months the fandom tends to tie all his bad traits to megatron and as we see...this is just who starscream is lmao.

it is saddening and i really do not like that he killed skywarp and he is shown to be quite shit at leading anything, which part of me is upset about because i do think that the writers should show that he is capable fo being a decent leader.

tho i am starting to accept that skybound is just gonna make him a full on murder bot. i do hope he has some type of arc (that's mainly if megatron is going to have a 'redemption arc') that allows him to have some growth and some character change like i am HOPING. I don't mind a crazy murder obsessed starscream, even if he does kill his allies in the process, but if that's all they're going to make him and refuse to develop him into a more rounded villain or character then meh.

So like- it’s so funny to read SS say “the squishies are trying to fight?” Out of context but in context it’s actually so disturbing???? Like I’m laughing but also why Starscream? Why are you like this?

I love Optimus Prime so much he’s so cool. The amount of emotion shown when Bumblebee died was just- AHHHH I feel so bad for him and I can see how devastated he is. He clearly values all form of life (he holds the deer similarly to how he held BB and seemed genuinely remorseful for accidentally crushing it) and is kind of having a horrible time so far. I wanna see him fight some decepticons. I also like how the humans are being utilized, they are small and weak compared to the transformers but they are able to help in ways that are surprising. Spike and Carly greatly helped Optimus Prime escape by just pushing the gun and the fact that they know earth and the area allowed them to give the Autobots a place to hide and recover for a bit. The guy with the Duke tag idk if that’s his name but I don’t know why it wouldn’t be (I don’t do military stuff) was able to temporarily take down Starscream and escape, which is about as good as one can hope for. The decepticons have been brutal so far and I can’t wait to see what will happen when Megatron shows up. Which I am assuming he will do because of one of the covers for I think issue 5.

Carly is great I love her, I love her dad he seemed cool and I’m sad he is dead :(

Love this new world so far, so glad I live fairly close to a comic store. I’m going to try to exclusively just get the OP covers because they look soooo good. I love the art style. Also the Starscream cover (where you can see the guy in the fighter jet going at him) also looks really great I just love how Optimus Prime looks especially in the art style.

I have to ask if you know about Beachcomber bc ever since I got into transformers he's been my #1 blorbo. He's just so cute and sweet and I wish he showed up in more media

YESSSSSS I absolutely ADORE Beachcomber. The Golden Lagoon is one of my all time favorite G1 episodes, and his Legacy Evolution figure is one of the first non-Bumblebees I got for my humble figure collection. He's standing next to Tracks with his little bird-buddy on his shoulder.

He's such an absolute doll, and I also wish he got to be more than a background character in TF media. You can actually see him being shot/possibly killed by Starscream in one of the flashback panels of Volume #2 of the Skybound Transformers comics run, and when I saw it I got so bummed cause I was hoping he'd make an appearance in that series! Maybe he'll be alright though, guess we won't know until we know.

I also wrote a little blurb for him right here if you'd like to read it! More proof that I need to get my Transformers Masterpost set up soon, haha!

But yes, I love love love Beachcomber, and I'm glad other people out there love him as much as I do!

God I loved that scene with Jazz and Cliffjumper in the recent Skybound issue. Not only did Jazz actively engage with Cliffjumper body language wise but he went out of his way to console Cliff on the his hesitation to kill Starscream AND Carly giving him the silent treatment. It's also the fact Cliffjumper felt comfortable enough to vent to Jazz about these things in the first place?! Even though Jazz doesn't understand personally, he related Cliffjumper's struggle to Optimus who is going through a similar thing with Spike which in turn also further humanized Optimus

I agree with this completely! I know I've said this before here, but it's been so rare for Jazz to express closeness (particularly physically) or open up with anyone in this way! It's great to see a friendship between Jazz and Cliffjumper expanded upon too, it was only present in like... one episode and the movie in the Sunbow cartoon, and it's great to see it come back. I hope that Jazz gets the same depth as Cliffjumper and Arcee have and might eventually open up about his own personal struggles, too.

I am literally in the process of writing a post about Jazz and his traumatic past from the Marvel UK comics continuity that will include this bit:

While I get the sense that this may change, particularly with the new Skybound comics featuring Jazz and showing more of his friendship with Cliffjumper which has its source in the Sunbow cartoon, I don't feel like we've ever had this much of a window into Jazz's past and such a deep look at his personality and relationships. I don't think that any future content needs to be this dark, but I hope that as much attention is given to Jazz in the future!
