Blog 8 (week 9) - Fireflies; I just think they're neat
Tumblr media
Bioluminescence is one of the most incredible phenomena on the planet. Before humans invented electricity and lightbulbs in the early 1800s, the only thing we knew that could produce light was fire and stars…and life.
As humans we like to think of ourselves as quite advanced and intelligent as we have mastered how to light up the dark - fire allowed us to find safety from predators at night when we were most vulnerable and allowed us to work even after the sun had gone down. But we aren’t special, so many species were making their own light long before we ever tried.
If you’ve read my old post on art and nature you’ll remember one reason I am very fond of fireflies is because of a chance encounter with a massive population during field work; but fireflies have always been near and dear to my heart - growing up in rural Canada, there's no shortage of time to waste and bugs to catch and fireflies where the first insect I ever really took the time to observe up close as a kid.
Bioluminescence is incredible for a lot of reasons, one being it is almost perfectly efficient at using energy (Branham, 2005). Fireflies are tiny! They don’t have a lot of material and energy to waste so their light needs to be as cost effective as possible. If you’ve ever touched a lightbulb that’s been on for a long time it's hot! But fireflies don’t waste any light energy as heat - both for their own safety and to save precious calories.
For glow-worms (larval fireflies) flashing lights are a warning to predators - a giant neon sign saying “HEY! I TASTE REALLY BAD!” (and they do, so if a bird eats the glowing worm once, it's unlikely to want to do it again). Adult fireflies have unique flash patterns for their species and use their light to attract a mate (I’ll save you my attempts at flashing jokes, you’re welcome) (Branham, 2005). I’ve you’ve ever taken a date on a romantic night out to look at the stars, are you and the firefly really that different?
So how does it work? Well bioluminesce happens through a complicated looking chemical reaction like this:
Tumblr media
(Navizet et al. 2011)
It looks science-y and difficult but at its core ATP is the same molecule that your body uses when it needs energy. When you eat, the energy from your food attaches a phosphate “P” onto the molecule and then you rip the phosphorus off to use that energy when and where you need it! When the P is ripped off to do biofluorescence the energy is used to power a reaction between magnesium or calcium, oxygen and a chemical the fireflies produce called luciferin that produces light!
As pollen and nectar foragers- they are also pollinators hard at work even after everyone else is asleep. So thank a firefly for more than just their incredible light! I think it's always good to remember that as separate and exceptional from nature we may consider ourselves to be as humans - most of our technology is something nature did first and really - we’re not so different from the rest of the animals we share a planet with.

Trash Bat Char's 2023 Spooky Season Movie Marathon
As is tradition for many around this time of year, I try to cram in as many seasonally-appropriate movies as I can starting around September and going til Thanksgiving (Halloween is a 3 month holiday in my mind, leave me alone). I try to mostly watch new-to-me films, with the occasional beloved rewatch thrown in. Movies will be a mix of classic horror, anything involving monsters & creatures of the night (especially vampires because I am nothing if not predictable), and some family-friendly Halloween & autumn romps.
I'll include my personal rating & some brief thoughts, but I'm so bad at rating things so please don't come at me if I give something a whack score, lol. I also track everything on my Letterboxd. I'm always open to suggestions to throw on my future lists!
(updated: 10/12/23)
1. Crimson Peak (2015)
-first-time watch, viewed on Sept. 6th
-70/100; this film was a visual treat, from the set design to the costumes. I craved a little bit more out of the ghosts of the house, but I also get what they were going for.
2. The Vampire Lovers (1970)
-first-time watch, viewed on Sept. 18th
-60/100; this is the third Hammer vampire film I've seen, with Dracula & Dracula A.D. 1972 being a part of last year's marathon. I was definitely invested in getting to see a classic piece of lesbian vampire media, but the plot pacing & the ending left me a bit disappointed. However, Ingrid Pitt was absolutely captivating.
2. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)
-first-time watch, viewed on Sept. 21st
-60/100; first off, loved the claymation. I've been aware of Wallace & Gromit's existence for a long while, but this was my first time actually watching them. There uh, sure were a lot of jokes about """melons"""! It was a pretty ok watch though, got a few chuckles out of me.
4. Blood & Donuts (1995)
-first-time watch, viewed on Sept. 24th
-60/100; the title and premise of this little vampire film intrigued me, but I'm not sure I would call it...good? I was entertained in some capacity. Maybe baffled by the acting & character choices of the cab driver, he was like a mix of Christopher Walken & Tommy Wiseau. A unique little vamp film though. Gains bonus points for usage of Concrete Blonde's "Bloodletting" in a graveyard scene.
5. The Thing (1982)
-first-time watch, viewed on Sept. 30th
-70/100; I know, I know, giving this acclaimed & beloved film only 3 1/2 stars is a crime. I certainly recognize why it's held in such high regard, but I also gotta rate things based on my own personal enjoyment, and I just wasn't super gripped or blown away. And maybe that's a me problem or can change in the future, but I did still like the film! The scene with the guy whose head disconnects from the body & becomes a spider and crawls away genuinely shocked me.
6. Scream (1996)
-first-time watch, viewed on Oct. 3rd
-90/100; This was a very fun watch, and I'm glad I waited until I've seen a lot more horror movies before watching it - a lot of it would have gone totally over my head if I had watched as a teen. I've gotten two Ghostface-related art commissions this month, so it felt only appropriate to watch it myself to "catch the vibe". I might try and watch the first sequel soon.
7. Monster High 2 (2023)
-first-time watch, viewed on Oct. 6th
-50/100; the first musical movie was a mix of being a mess & having fun, and this one was pretty similar. I still don't like the majority of the musical numbers, and I'm still not a fan of how generic the background students are. Live-action non-binary Frankie Stein is still an absolute delight though, and as "mid" as I've found these movies, I REALLY need them to make the third since the plot hook they left at the end of this one implies a Frankie-centric story next time.
8. Coraline (2009)
-re-watch, viewed on Oct. 9th
-90/100; damn it's been over a decade since I last watched this, but I was in love with it when it first came out. Laika stop-motion films are just so, so visually stunning to look at. The way they tackled the topic of emotional neglect & the escapism of wanting a different life than the one you have is just...oof!
9. It Follows (2014)
-re-watch, viewed on Oct. 10th
-80/100; I saw this one in the theaters when it came out, and I remember feeling so unsettled upon leaving the theater and riding with my friends down the dark, empty roads home. Watched it this time with a group of pals on Discord this time around, and I mostly knew what to expect, but the concept & execution still just leaves you feeling uneasy after!
---
Other films I hope to get to this season:
The Ring
The Exorcist
Ginger Snaps
An American Werewolf in London
We Are the Night
Happy Death Day 2 U
The Lost Boys (rewatch)

I’m sorry but Logan DOES NOT cheat on Rory. I’m going through my Gilmore Girls rewatch and I’m at the infamous Logan/Rory  “we were broken up/ we were on a break” part. It's always bothered me that, later on, when she finds out he slept with other girls during this time, she tells everyone he cheated on her. And not only that but this fandom likes to use this “cheating” as a big strike against Logan. You can’t escape the “Logan is a cheater” hate. It’s in almost every GG article online, on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and in the comments of most Logan-centric Youtube videos. I’ve had enough! Let’s set the record straight. Time to lay out all the facts. I've watched this show so many times but this time I had to stop and do the actual math. They have their big fight 2 weeks after her birthday. When Jess leaves he wishes her Happy Birthday and says “wasn’t that a couple weeks ago?” “Let Me Hear Your Balalaikas Ring Out” actually airs 2 weeks after “Twenty One is the Loneliest Number”, so it’s safe to assume the fight literally happens 2 weeks after her birthday. Rory’s birthday, according to Google, is Oct 8th, which means the fight happens about Oct 22nd. So they have this huge blowout fight, yelling at each other in a public place, Rory refuses to leave with him and Logan says something like "do whatever you want" before he leaves. The next time we hear anything about the situation is in the Thanksgiving episode. We find out from Rory, that Logan will not be coming to see Lane’s band perform because they are not speaking. She says “I think we just needed a little break. At least I did. It’s more like a hiatus.” Thanksgiving in 2005 fell on Nov 24th. So she's saying she can have a massive fight with her boyfriend and not speak to him for a MONTH because she” feels” like she needed a break and somehow expects that he understands their relationship is just on "hiatus". HOW?! It’s beyond naive of her to think he should just understand her reasoning to why she hasn’t spoken to him. Plus sometime between these two episodes she moved without telling him. His friends helped her move, so he obviously finds out that she moved and she didn't tell him about it. I'm sorry, but any sane person would also assume that the fight was a break up after the other person moves and then ghosts them for a month! If I had a screaming match with my boyfriend in a public place and he moved and I didn't hear from him for a month I would NOT assume we were just on hiatus. The reasonable assumption at that point is that the fight was more than a fight. It was a break up. This is what Logan assumed after the fight and his suspicions were only further confirmed when he didn’t hear anything from her afterwards. You don't need to say the words "we're over" to be broken up. You can definitely break up without having a proper conversation about it. Look at what happened with Rory and Jess. They didn't "break up", he just left without telling her... it was still a break up. How about Lane and Zack when he gets all jealous and screws up their big break. They don’t actually “break up” but you understand what that moment is. You DO however need to have a conversation to actually be "on a break" or for your relationship to be on “hiatus”. Both parties need to know you are on a break for you to actually be on a break. Just because you "think it" doesn't mean it's true. For the same reason, you also couldn’t just decide your relationship is an open relationship, without having that conversation with the other person. So just because Rory “feels” like she needs a break doesn’t mean Logan is wrong to believe that fight was a break up . THEN during Thanksgiving dinner Rory gets a call from Honor and discovers that Logan believes they are broken up.  She is surprised but doesn't call him to fix the issue. She doesn't call him and say "Hey, Honor just informed me we are broken up. I didn't think we were ... do you really want to be broken up?" She just leaves it as it is and accepts that they are broken up. Which means they are officially broken up at Thanksgiving. She knows it. They are over and she accepts it. During “Bridesmaids Revisited” we find out that he sleeps with two of the bridesmaids during the holidays. One at Thanksgiving and and one at Christmas. Both after Rory has already accepted they are broken up. Please tell me, HOW IS THAT CHEATING?! Christmas is another month after she knew they were over! With the one woman it had been a full month since he had heard anything from her, with the other it had been two months since they spoke! If I were Logan I would also assume my relationship was over. And I’d like to point out that waiting a month before you sleep with someone else is not immediately sleeping around. After this she tells everyone he cheated on her. Paris, her mom, Jess. And not just that he cheated on her, but that he cheated on her A LOT. With a whole bridal party! Logan. did. not. cheat. on. Rory. She may feel hurt and betrayed that he was trying to move on with his life during their time apart. Her anger is valid when he lets her walk into a room of his one-night stands without warning her. But he did not cheat on her and it was wrong of her to tell everyone he did. It is also wrong of this fandom to keep claiming Logan’s “cheating” as a reason that he is bad for Rory.

Inside 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars'
By: Gerri Miller  (original article link on howstuffworks)
Sources
George Lucas interviewed August 4, 2008
Dave Filoni interviewed September 11, 2008
The sci-fi phenomenon that began more than 30 years ago with a movie about a galaxy long ago and far, far away has expanded exponentially ever since with sequels, prequels, books, games and animated spinoffs. Although the animated "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" movie, released this summer, has to date grossed a less than stellar $34 million, it was an offshoot of creator George Lucas' mission to create a TV series, and it served its purpose as a promotional tool for the weekly "Clone Wars" episodes that premiere on Cartoon Network Oct. 3, 2008.
Focused on the conflict briefly referred to in the original "Star Wars," the galactic civil war takes place in the period between "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones" and "Episode III: Revenge of the Sith." The Clone Wars pit the Grand Army of the Republic led by the Jedi Knights against the Separatists and their Droid Army, led by Count Dooku, a Jedi turned Sith Lord aligned with the evil Darth Sidious. Many of the characters from the "Star Wars" universe are involved, including Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi and young Anakin Skywalker, before he was tempted to the Dark Side and became Darth Vader.
"I was lamenting the fact that in 'Episode II,' I started the Clone Wars, and in 'Episode III,' I ended the Clone Wars, and I never actually got to do anything on the Clone Wars," says Lucas. "It's like skipping over World War II."
To remedy that omission, he tapped Dave Filoni, an animator (Nickelodeon's "Avatar: the Last Airbender" series) and passionate "Star Wars" fan, to bring "The Clone Wars" to TV.
Ensconced at Big Rock Ranch, near Lucas' Skywalker Ranch headquarters in Marin County, Cali., Filoni and his team of artists and computer animators are making 22 episodes in season one and have nearly two more seasons written.
"We're way ahead. We've been doing this ever since I finished 'Revenge of the Sith,'" says Lucas, who hopes to do at least 100 installments.
He and Filoni collaborate on everything from story to design to execution in translating the "Star Wars" universe for television. It's a daunting creative, technical and logistic task, as we'll explain in the following sections.
Building the Universe
How do you scale down an IMAX-size spectacle for television and still have it make an impact, especially on a small screen budget? That's just one of the problems Dave Filoni has to solve.
"'Star Wars' is very famous for the scale of it, and how convincing it looks. So when you're doing a weekly television series, you have to figure out how to do things on that level," he notes. "Sometimes it forces you to be creative and come up with solutions that are better than if you can shoot everything you want," he continues, preferring to consider budgetary constraints a creative incentive rather than a limitation. "The team here is challenged to come up with these giant battles. We haven't shied away from anything."
While he did some of the initial character design, subsequently, Filoni has spent most of his time supervising other artists and animators, who number around 70 in-house and another 80 or so at facilities in Singapore and Taipei.
"Everything is written here, and the story and design and editing are all done here. The animation and lighting are done overseas, and sometimes some modeling as well," he outlines.
"I meet with George to talk about the episodes and he hands out a lot of the storylines and main ideas for the stories. I'll draw while he's talking and show him the sketch," Filoni continues. "That way we communicate right off the bat about what something might look like."
At any given time, the director notes, episodes are in various stages of completion, "from designing to working on a final cut, or adding sound and color-correction. I have four episodic directors to help me, who each have an episode they're managing."
Rather than use computer animation to duplicate the live-action films' characters or continue in the very stylized vein of the 2004-2005 "Clone Wars" micro-series, "We kind of shot for the middle," says Filoni, who endeavored to blend a 2-D esthetic with 3-D technology.
"The 3-D model makers and riggers who worked on the prequels dealt with the height of realism to create convincing digital characters. I knew that we weren't going to be able to do that for the series. And we wanted it to be different than a live-action feature, to get away from photo-realism. It was a choice to simplify something in the character models, the same way we would do things in a 2-D show."
So how did Filoni stay true to the "Star Wars" legacy in this newest installment? Read on to find out.
Clone Style
Taking some inspiration from the earlier cartoon series, Filoni
approached the characters as a 2-D animator would, "but stylized the face a little more. If you look at Anakin, he has certain edges and lines in his face. I would draw an edge or a line that might be unnaturally straight or curved, and that would play into the lighting of it. I tried to sculpt in 3-D the way I would draw or sculpt an image in 2-D, with shadow and light. I wanted it to look like a painting -- you see a textured, hand-painted style on every character. I have texture artists who literally paint every single character right down to their eyeball, because I wanted that human touch on everything."
Advances in computer animation have allowed Filoni to accomplish much more than he would have been able to in traditional 2-D. "For eight years I worked just with a pencil. I never touched a computer. But working with George, we try to look at computers as an incredibly advanced pencil. The technical side helps the creative, artistic side," he says.
Battles filled with huge numbers of soldiers can be rendered faster than ever before, but they still have to be created, along with every other prop and character in an enormous universe. "'Star Wars' is so complex in that you're building a whole galaxy. We go to many different planets," Filoni reminds. "So every rock, tree, blade of grass, native vehicle -- every asset -- needs design. We had to create a whole bunch of assets for each episode, and the budget goes up for each element you have. Once you build it, you have it, but we can't go to a different planet and have the same chair there," he laughs. "On a schedule where we need those things right away, it's difficult to get it all built."
Since "The Clone Wars" is chronologically sandwiched between "Clone Wars" and "Revenge of the Sith," it has been a mandate for the creators to stay consistent with the mythology. "That's probably one of the trickiest things," admits Filoni. "We always have to keep in mind what the characters are thinking and feeling at the beginning of this and at the end. You have a lot of room to play with when you're in the middle, but you have to remember what people say in the third movie. With characters like Obi-Wan or Anakin or Padme, I have to pay very careful attention that it will hook up. And then there's the expanded universe of "Star Wars" novels and video games. I try to be aware of it all and work it in, because fans really appreciate it."
Filoni hopes to attract existing fans and create new ones, especially among the younger generation, but admits doing the latter may be easier. "One thing we have that's different from any movie that came before is we're an animated series. But there's an instant reaction to the word animation that it's for kids. How you get around that is with the stories you tell. We'll have our snow battles and we'll also have our lighter 'Return of the Jedi' moments. Some episodes lean older, some younger. But in the end it has a broad appeal," he believes.
The recent "Clone Wars" movie (out on DVD Nov. 11 ) served as a stand-alone prequel to introduce the characters at this point in time. In contrast, "The series has its small arcs and shows you the war from across a broad spectrum of episodes. It's not just Anakin Skywalker's story," Filoni underlines. "We can go left or right of that plot and deal with characters we have never seen. There's a lot of material. It's a three-year period in the history of the 'Star Wars' Universe, and there are so many stories to tell. The longer it goes, the more chance we get to tell fascinating stories in that galaxy."
Character Study
"The Clone Wars" shows a different side of some of the film franchise's most iconic characters. "In a series, you can do a whole episode about a character and learn more about what they were like, which makes what happens to them a lot more poignant," explains Filoni. "We know Yoda is powerful, but how does that power develop? How does he use it? We get to go into more detail that you just couldn't do in the live action films, because they're mainly focused on Anakin."
While few of the actors from the live action movies agreed to reprise their roles in voice over for "The Clone Wars," Anthony Daniels, the original C-3PO, is the exception. "One of the special moments for me was hearing Anthony on the telephone, discussing C-3PO with me and his experiences. That really helps us round out the characters," says the director, who enjoyed similar input from Rob Coleman, the animation supervisor who worked on Yoda on the prequels.
Of the new characters not seen in the live action series, there's the alluring but venomous Asajj Ventress, a disciple of Count Dooku. "She is, of course, a villain, and fits into the structure of the Sith," Filoni elaborates. "Darth Sidious -- Senator Palpatine -- is the main bad guy, and his apprentice is Count Dooku. Dooku is training Ventress in the Dark Side. She's getting more powerful. I wanted to make her intelligent, deceptive and also kind of sexual. She's kind of a forbidden fruit -- Jedi are not supposed to get involved with the more lustful aspects of life. She adds another dynamic to the series."
On the other side of the good/evil coin is newcomer Ahsoka Tano, Anakin's teenage padawan, or apprentice. "She's Anakin's student and helps us see him as more of a hero," says Filoni. "Once he gets over his initial reaction, he takes pride in her. He's unpredictable and the Jedi know that, but he has compassion and that is used against him and it later brings him to the Dark Side."
Ahsoka was created, says Lucas, "Because I needed to mature Anakin. The best way to get somebody to become responsible and mature is to have them become a parent or a teacher. You have to think about what you're doing and set an example. You look at your behavior and the way you do things much differently. The idea was to use her to make Anakin become more mature. We've made her a more extreme version of what Anakin was- - a little out there, independent, vital and full of life, but even more so. He gets a little dose of his own medicine."
"She's been a really fun character to develop," adds Filoni, who likes Ahsoka but admits that his character tastes tend to run a bit more obscure -- his favorite is Plo Koon, "a bizarre Jedi Master. It's been fun to develop him and show his personality beyond the fact that he's bizarre looking and carries a lightsaber."
Fan Fare
Just three years ago, Filoni dressed up as Plo Koon to see an opening night showing of "Revenge of the Sith," so it's not surprising that the 34-year-old fan is still pinching himself that he has this job. "It's a very creative atmosphere," he says of Big Rock Ranch, where the lakeside setting is "meant to inspire us artistically and definitely does. A lot of the people I work with grew up with 'Star Wars,' so we have a great time. It's hard, intense work, but George is very engaged in what we're doing. What more could you ask for? I have the guy who created the 'Star Wars' universe excited and interested in what we're doing. We couldn't be happier about that."
Asked why he thinks "Star Wars" remains a fan favorite today, three decades later, Lucas says diversification is the key. "We were always able to deal with different aspects of the story in various forms and I think that keeps it alive. It is a lot of fun and it's a universe that has been created to inspire young people to exercise their imagination and inspire them to be creative, and I think that always works."
"The original 'Star Wars' had broad appeal to everybody, and it holds up so well," adds Filoni. "I think there's a timelessness to it, even though Luke looks like a kid from the '70s with that haircut. Luke is a farmer boy and Han is a cowboy. Jedi Knights are like the samurai of Japan or the knights of Europe. Those archetypes work the globe over. It's a world phenomenon that speaks to everyone. There will always be a character you can relate to."

Sin City Bombshells
For this post, I am going to be analyzing the following female characters: Nancy, Wendy, Gail, Miho, and Shellie. I am going to be going in depth about Lucille in another post, when I discuss lesbians. I know it’s a lot, but each of these characters represent a different spectrum of female sexuality, and to a certain extent, objectification. Most of the significant female characters are in the sex industry, as prostitutes or strippers, respectively.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First, we have Nancy Callahan, played by Jessica Alba. Her story is brought by Bruce Willis’ character, John Hartigan, saving her when she was a child from a child predator. They part for several years and meet again in the future when Hartigan gets out of jail. He sees her as a 19 year old working as a stripper. She tells him that she never stopped thinking about him and has fallen in love with him. It is implied that they start dating afterwards. I don’t mind an age gap in relationships but this one rubbed me the wrong way. Hartigan met her as an 11 year old and he was grown. Now that she is older, she is viewed as a sexual object. I think that this represents the barely legal fetish that a lot of men carry. Along with this, Nancy is the perfect example of the stereotypical image of a stripper. She is a young woman (college age, fresh out of high school) with a heavy baggage of childhood trauma mixed with potential daddy issues. I think she fell in love with Hartigan because he saved her as her lowest. A savior, of sorts. I expected her to have a bigger role in the story because she is a huge name and is even on the cover. She only appears for a small bit and was only accompanied by Hartigan. She is constantly sexualized by her now stripper job and her kidnapping. I think it would have been a cool idea if Hartigan and her teamed up, like a Batman and Robin situation. Her role as a film noir trope is the “The good-bad girl stands in between the girl-next-door and the femme fatale, which highlights her moral ambiguity” (Barroso). Nancy has an innocent image (as we remember her from the beginning of the movie as a child), however, is now grown and had a darker moral code. Her becoming a sex worker also ruptures her moral ambiguity. Some still believe that being involved in the sex industry is immoral and evil.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next is Wendy. She is played by Jamie King. Wendy is the twin sister of Goldie, Marv’s prostitute lover. The reason she is given that name is the striking image of her soft golden billowing hair. Goldie was killed, hence Marv (Mickey Rourke) going on the hunt to find her killer. He blames himself for her murder and goes on a revenge spree to avenge her as he couldn’t save her previously. Since the beginning, she is framed in a sexual lens. She is described as an angel sent from heaven. She is naked the second the audience sees her in a passionate lovemaking scene. She is enveloped in light. Dana Leventhal observes, “The men idealize, romanticize, pine for the women by placing them on impossible pedestals (circumscribed by sexuality and desire) as cherished imaginings and visions, and through this possession make it their duty to guard and safekeeping them, especially since the women are jeopardized or victimized by brutal crime and injustice” (Leventhal). He finds out that Goldie has a twin, Wendy. Wendy is hardened and dead set on revenge, as she should be. She is a no nonsense type of woman. Wendy is tough and willing to bring the murderers to justice. She is still sexualized, nonetheless, as Marv always compared her to her sister, and viewed her the same way. Donaldson writes, “The women of classic noir are often alluring, moral ambiguous, and two steps ahead of the men in the story” (Donaldson). Wendy is alluring, as she starkly resembles her prostitute twin sister. She is morally ambiguous as she is dark and calculating, yet she joins Marv (the anti-hero) on avenging the wrongful murder of her sister. Wendy is one of my favorite characters as I liked how merciless she was.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gail, played by Rosario Dawson, serves as one of two women of color characters. That is a discussion for another day, as I am going to be analyzing her character. She is the femme fatale. Barroso defines the trope as, “The femme fatale...is mysterious and seductive, known for using her charms to ensnare men and get them into dangerous, and most often, deadly situations. Her main characteristic is using her feminine sexual traits as a way to achieve hidden purposes” (Barroso). She is tough and isn’t going down without a fight. She is the epitome of female empowerment in the eyes of men: tough and battle ready, and looks good doing it. From the picture alone, she is scantily clad. She looks great and I like her outfit but I know the reason why she is dressed like this. She is cunning and commanding. She resembles and reminds me of a dominatrix. Sexually dangerous and isn’t afraid to beat down men. She has masculine traits like being the leader of the gang and she is gritty and domineering. She kills men in a severely violent manner and is strong and self sufficient.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I freaking love Miho. She is, by far, my favorite character in the film. The movies that Devon Aoki appears in, her characters always reign supreme. There is a reason Suki from 2 Fast 2 Furious is still so popular and raved about. However, there is something I hated about her character. She didn't say a word. Her character is the epitome of age old Asian stereotypes: the silent ninja. Miho would strike her sword on her opponents in the same “badass” manner as a ninja would. Her character had so much potential and I feel like it was a waste to have her be silent the entire time. Both her and Gail are the tough girls in the film. Leventhal writes, “The women are not helpless, powerless, or weak; rather, they are cunning and battle-ready. Not only do they refrain from asking for help from the male protagonists, but they either resist or fight to save themselves from their enemies” (Leventhal). Miho is presented differently from the other girls of the film. Her, along with Gail, are not the average damsel in distress, which I like. Laura Woodhouse rants, “Miho...initially appears to be the only truly powerful woman in Sin City. She is not possessed by a man, she is not a victim, she is certainly not physically passive as she goes on to kill many more men and can easily win a fight with any man...It is almost as though Miho is a different creature, a member of a race of silent killers that exist only to perform acts of violence. Quite simply, she cannot be presented as a ‘normal’ female because she has superior killing skills to a man and this threatens the patriarchal nature of Sin City. The creators of Sin City rob Miho of a voice in order to justify her power” (”The F Word”).

Last, but not least, there is Shellie. Played by the late Brittany Murphy, she is a prostitute. Her costume in her major story arc is a black underwear set with a white oversized button down shirt. Given that she was in her own home and she is allowed to wear what she wants, but it rectifies the stereotype that women walk around their home scantily clad, sexually available for overnight guests. Along with that, it fits her day job of being eyed on by the voyeuristic audience. Shellie is conceived as the victim character; she needs the help of her boyfriend to save her from her deranged pimp of a boss. Leventhal notes, “the traditional formulations or projections of femininity as sexuality are retained, as are the concomitant age-old misogynistic conceits of male domination/paternalism in the guise of safety and defense of women, i.e., the cliche that women are weak and need rescuing by men from other men” (Leventhal). Shellie mirrors the poor princess locked up in a tower, needing her Prince Charming to come and save her.

Name: Kim Age: 26 (27 in September) Writing Blog URL(s): @jinterlude
Nationality: Filipino-American Languages: English  Star Sign: Virgo MBTI: ISFJ-T Favorite color: Any shade of blue  Favorite food: Ah, I have so many, but I really do love ramen & this Filipino noodle dish my grandma makes. Favorite movie: West Side Story. A close second is Pride & Prejudice (2005) Favorite ice cream flavor: Rocky Road  Favorite animal: Pandas Go-to karaoke song: Upside Down by A*Teens (I think I just dated myself)
What fandom(s) do you write for? Mainly BTS, but I have written for SVT, EXO, GOT7, Monsta X, B.A.P, & NCT
When did you post your first piece? Oh dang, when? Hmm… I want to say Oct. 2016 (?) on my first blog (I had deleted and came back to Tumblr).
Do you write fluff/angst/crack/general/smut, combo, etc? Why? I mostly write a combo because it just happens that way! My main genres are: fluff, romance, & humor/crack.
Do you write OCs, X Readers, Ships...etc? I mainly write OCs stories because that’s what makes me the happiest when it comes to writing, but I still write x reader fics for drabbles and oneshots.
Why did you decide to write for Tumblr? Funny story. The reason why I started writing for Tumblr is because an old group of friends said that I should write a funny story based on a college class of mine, so I did and here we are.
What inspires you to write? Usually, it’s my imagination, but other times it’s either the song I’m listening to or even the show I’m currently watching. Right now, my inspiration draws from anime.
What genres/AUs do you enjoy writing the most? Genre wise, I love writing fluff & romance. AUs wise, I’m a sucker for Royal/Royalty. Mafia/Gang & Soulmate AUs would be a close second.
What do you hope your readers take away from your work? Oh, wow. I honestly never thought about that before. I think for me, the one thing I hope my readers get from my stories is at the end of the day, please do something that will make you happy. Your own happiness should always be a top priority for you.
What do you do when you hit a rough spot creatively? I take a break! Instead of forcing myself out of the creativity slump, I just take a break and let my mind recharge. Then, I go back to my outline and look over while listening to music that I know will spark some creativity juices.
What is your favorite work and why? Your most successful? My favorite works (yes, I couldn’t pick just one) are my Royal!AU Seokjin series (Fight for Me & Our Second Chance). I love the amount of time and effort I put into those two stories, and I’m simply in awe at the world and characters I created. My second favorite is my latest Seokjin oneshot, Protecting Each Other. It’s my first story that exceeded 10,000 words, and I’m just proud of how that turned out. Successful wise, I would say it’s, This Little String. It’s a Soulmate!Taehyung oneshot based around the red-string of fate, and every other month, I see someone like and/or reblog it, so I say that’s pretty successful!
Who is your favorite person to write about? Seokjin hands down. I mean, not only is he one of my ultimate biases, but for some reason my creative banks dishes out ideas and inspiration for him like it’s nothing.
Do you think there’s a difference between writing fanfiction vs. completely original prose? I personally don’t think so. You are still writing original content that derails from the source material (or adds to it), all you have to do is just replace your idols’ name with an original character name, and there you go. What do you think makes a good story? For me, I’d say that if you’re honestly proud of the end product, then that story is good, and your readers will see that. What is your writing process like? First I get an idea, or I like to call it, “it appeared to me in a vision,” then I outline it (if the idea lingers in my brain), and then I start writing and editing. Sometimes I’d sprint with my fellow writers on a server I’m in, and other times, I’d put on music and just let my brain go wild. Most of the time, I’m sprinting with friends.
Would you ever repurpose a fic into a completely original story? If I had the time, probably. I can see my Royal!AU series becoming an original story with different characters and an expanded plotline. What tropes do you love, and what tropes can’t you stand? I am a sucker for F2L I (friends to lovers)! I just love the idea of dating someone who’s your best friend, so why not date your best friend, if the feelings are mutual of course! As for tropes, I dislike, I can’t say that I have any. I think it’s because (and I feel so bad for this), I don’t really read much stories other than what my mutual friends have written.
How much would you say audience feedback/engagement means to you? It means the world to me because I do like knowing if I’m doing something right or if I need to go back and edit something for clarity. Mainly, I get likes and reblogs (with no feedback), and while it’s still nice of someone for taking the time to like and reblog something, I would like some feedback, please. I’m still grateful no matter what, though!
What has been one of the biggest factors of your success (of any size)? I think it’s the support of my amazing group of friends/mutuals! It’s thanks to their support that my work is reaching a wider audience, and it just means the world to me that they read my blood, sweat, and tears. I love them so much, especially my close friend, Jey (softjeon on Tumblr)!
Coffee or tea? What are you ordering? For coffee, my go-to is a Caramel Macchiato with Soy Milk (from Starbucks), but lately I’ve been using my Keurig, so I just Peppermint Mocha and 3 tsps of Sugar (I can’t stand bitter coffee lol). For tea, I really like Mango green tea from Gongcha (another boba place chain).
Dream job (whether you have a job or not)? My dream job is to be an elementary school teacher, however, I am currently working on becoming a social worker where my population will still focus on children/students. So, it’s a good compromise!
If you could have one superpower, what would you choose?  If I could have one superpower, it would be cryokinesis aka ice manipulation!
If you could visit a historical era, which would you choose? Oh, that’s a tough one, but if I had to choose one, I would go for the 1960s so I can see the Beatles live!
If you could restart your life, knowing what you do now, would you? No, because it’s thanks to those life lessons that I grow up to be who I currently am. Sometimes you have to go through those harsh experiences to be a better version of yourself!
Would you rather fight 100 chicken-sized horses or one horse-sized chicken? One horse-sized chicken, then I can feed my family for months.
If you were a trope in a teen high school movie, what would you have been? Oh, hands down, I would be the stereotypical geek/nerd. Though, I was called a “preppy” in 9th grade, so that was a first.
Do you believe in aliens/supernatural creatures? Yup, especially ghosts!
Fun fact about yourself that not everyone would know? I can say the alphabet backwards!
Do you think fanfic writers get unfairly judged? Oh, hands down, especially when it comes to writing smut. I’ve seen other blogs condemn writers who write smut about real people, but my thing is that these idols are merely face claims for a character that the author is writing about.
Do you think art can be a medium for change? I think so! Every artist has a voice, especially with what’s going on recently, we need to be able to use our voices to spread light on certain issues.
Do you ever feel there are times when you’re writing for others, rather than yourself? I used to think that way, especially when it came to writing x reader inserts since I know that’s what “sells” to the Tumblr audience. Now, I’m perfectly happy with writing x OC stories, and I’m content with my stories getting at least 5 notes. If it breaks 10 notes, then that’s a success!
Do you ever feel like people have misunderstood you or your writing at times? If they did, then I wouldn’t know. Most of the time, I think my writing is okay with people.
Do your offline friends/loved ones know you write for Tumblr? Yes, my soul friend managed my old blog once upon a time and actually read one of my smuts. I was so embarrassed! But at least he said it was tastefully written, so that’s a bonus?
What is one thing you wish you could tell your followers? Always remember that it is okay to take breaks/go on hiatus!
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers who might be too scared to put themselves out there? My advice to those who want to start writing but are too afraid put themselves out there is to simply go for it. I was that person who was afraid to put their writing out there for the world to see, especially with some already established BTS writers on Tumblr, but I went for it. At first, it might be discouraging but know that your mutuals/friends will always be your number one supporter! Use their support as a motivator to keep writing and finding your groove! Then, eventually, all of your readers will start trickling in and showering you with the love and support you deserve!
Are there any times when you regret joining Tumblr? I wouldn’t say regret joining but more like allowing my life to be revolved around it. At one point in my life, it felt like a second job/chore for me, and Tumblr should never be that type of site!
Do you have any mutuals who have been particularly formative/supportive in your Tumblr journey? Oh, I have so many! The ones that come to mind are definitely Jey (softjeon), Beanie (jinned), Nina (j-sope), Kenz (parksfilter), Renae (mygsii), Atlas (astraljoon), & Niah (randomkoalablog) to name a few! I love these amazing people so much and cherish their friendship to the moon and back!

Ethiopian factory sports Jack Ma quotes (permalink)
This pic was taken by researchers from Caribou Data at a textiles factory in Ethiopia. Every curtain on every window bore silk-screened quotes from Jack Ma's book (the name of the factory has been redacted to preserve the owner's privacy).
The researchers told me that 72 hours after Alibaba moved into Rwanda, every coffee farmer using the platform had sold out of their inventory.
It's a potent and visually arresting reminder of how global trade currents are shifting.

Charter orders all workers to keep showing up (permalink)
My local monopoly ISP is Charter. They're terrible in every single way. What's more, my city, Burbank, owns 100GB fiber that runs under my home's foundation slab, but I can't access it because of Charter's deal with the city. In addition to delivering slow-as-molasses connectivity at nosebleed prices (and relentlessly advertising upsells, dozens every week, print and digital), the company is also forcing all workers to show up in person during the pandemic – even those who could work from home.
They basically forced Nick Wheeler, an engineer who complained about this, to resign, calling his short, measured complaint about the policy "irresponsible," accusing him of "inciting fear."
https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/16/charter-coronavirus-work-home/
Charter gives its workers a single annual week's worth of sick-leave. Workers have to use that leave time if they are worried about contracting or transmitting coronavirus. Medical advice for coronavirus infections is to self-isolate for two weeks, though.
Even other telcos (AT&T, Comcast) are asking workers to work from home. Charter CEO Tom Rutledge has doubled down on his infect-the-world policy, because "While back office and management functions can be performed remotely, they are more effective from the office."
Charter is a tremendous beneficiary of public largesse. It gets access to our rights-of-way, something they couldn't hope to afford at market rates. It received billions in tax-cuts (which it squandered on stock buybacks). The company got Net Neutrality dismantled, and is given monopolies wherever it operates.
This largesse is predicated on the idea that Charter views itself as a steward and can be trusted with monopoly self-regulation. If you had any doubt that the company can't be trusted to pour piss out of a boot with instructions printed on the heel, this should dispel it forever.
What I'm saying is, if you ever have a Charter exec in your home, count the spoons before you let him leave.
Tumblr media
MAGA firefighters dismiss coronavirus as Democrat hoax (permalink)
"IAFF Union Firefighters for Trump" is a 27,000 member Facebook group of first responders who split from their union over its endorsement of Biden; Trump himself has endorsed the group.
Today, it is full of firefighters and EMTs who say that coronavirus is no big deal.
Some of the group's members are posting evidence to the contrary from their working experience, talking about the devastation they're witnessing firsthand. Their colleagues reply with poop emojis and "Trump2020."
https://www.propublica.org/article/facebook-firefighters-corona#179168
The group is infected with the conspiracy theory that coronvirus is a panic cooked up by Democrats to discredit Trump, or that it's a Chinese bioweapon, an idea that Trump and his Congressional and Senate supporters have tacitly (or explicitly) endorsed.
This is especially worrying as EMTs and firefighters are at high risk of contracting coronovirus. If they don't take the risk seriously, they could spread it to vulnerable people, or reduce emergency capacity while they are quarantined (they also risk their own health).
Group founder Kelly Hallman told Propublica that "There's never been this much hoopla given to the other things. They're doing it to crash the economy and make Trump look bad…If you had to point a finger at why the leftist media and the left in general has a smile on their face about this, it's the Dow. My wife and kids are scared, believing what they're seeing on TV. I'm telling them it's not as bad as the media makes out."

Flatter Me, a compliments card game (permalink)
Flatter Me is Ami Baio's latest kickstarted card-game: "a two-player game for all ages with 250 unique compliments to play with friends, family, and partners."

Its creator Ami Baio specialises in games that turn on kindness and connection; her last project was "You Don't Know Me."

A $20 pledge gets you one Flatter Me deck, $35 gets a two-pack. The cards are also designed to be given as gifts: "given to friends who need a boost, tucked into cards or gift bags, or left for friends to find."
Baio is seeking $12k in pre-orders and is delivers in Oct.

American Airlines blew billions, now it wants a bailout (permalink)
Since 2014, American Airlines has accumulated a $30B debt. It did so while paying its shareholders $15B through stock buybacks, and while raising prices on fliers, nickel-and-diming on bag charges and other extras. Now its industry group – whose members spent 96% of their free cash-flow on buybacks – is seeking a $50B coronavirus bailout, with no strings attached. That's 300% more than the industry got after 9/11.
This is shareholder capitalism working as intended. As Matt Levine writes, "it is optimized to extract money for shareholders when things go well and minimize the amount of shareholder money that is at risk when things go very wrong."
http://link.mail.bloombergbusiness.com/join/4wm/moneystuff-signup
But as Tim Wu writes, bailouts should come with strings attached. The airlines engineered this situation for themselves. If we let them socialized their losses and privatize their gains (again), they'll do it again (again).
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/16/opinion/airlines-bailout.html
"Change fees should be capped at $50 and baggage fees tied to some ratio of costs. The change fees don't just irritate; they are a drag on the broader economy, making the transport system less flexible and discouraging otherwise efficient changes to travel plans."
"We should end the airlines' pursuit of smaller and smaller seats, which are not only uncomfortable and even physically harmful, but also foster in-flight rage and make the job of flight attendants nigh unbearable."
"Finally, we have allowed too much common ownership, permitting large shareholders to take a stake in each of the major airlines, creating incentives to collude instead of compete."
As Naomi Klein has reminded us, the Shock Doctrine (can) cut both ways: the Great Depression catalyzed transformative change and the New Deal. Let's not permit this disaster be seized by the people responsible for it.

How to split a single ventilator for four patients (permalink)
In 2008, Greg Neyman and Charlene Babcock Irvin published "A Single Ventilator for Multiple Simulated Patients to Meet Disaster Surge" in the peer-reviewed Society for Academic Emergency Medicine journal.
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1197/j.aem.2006.05.009
In this video, Dr Babcock demonstrates how to split a single ventilator to safely and effectively treat up to four patients.
As she points out, there have been no studies of this, but it has been (temporarily) used successfully in the field.

Bigoted Republican Congressjerk votes against coronavirus relief because it might cover same-sex partnerships (permalink)
You may not get paid leave during the coronavirus crisis in part because Rep Andy Biggs (R-AZ) voted against it because his homophobia was more salient than his empathy.
https://theintercept.com/2020/03/17/coronavirus-stimulus-bill-andy-biggs/
He claimed (wrongly) that this was novel federal legislation in that it included domestic partnerships.
He was objecting to the provision of assistance to family members, including "biological, foster, or adopted child, a stepchild, a child of a domestic partner."
As Lee Fang writes, "The exact same legislative text around domestic partnerships and committed relationships is found in several bills in Congress, including paid sick leave legislation proposed as far back as 2015."
Biggs also lied and said that he objected to coronavirus relief because it would repeal the Hyde Amendment ("Two provisions that have nothing to do with the coronavirus are basically thrown into this thing. That's par for the course for the left").
The bill does not repeal the Hyde Amendment.
The Republican Party, folks. The party of death and poverty and tragedy and hate. Remember that in November.

Epidemiology and public health in 14 minutes (permalink)
Epidemiologist Dr. Ross Kauffman and sf writer Tobias Buckell teamed up to produce this short video explaining the costs of a runaway coronavirus epidemic to explain the need for drastic measures to their local Ohio town council.

It's a spectacular piece of science communications: grave without being alarmist, calm and measured, informative and plainspoken. It's a really important piece of video and I hope you'll watch it.

3D printed ventilator hero got a patent threat (permalink)
Remember the heartwarming story of the Italian makers who volunteered to fix their hospital's busted ventilators with 3D printed parts that they designed and produced on the spot?
https://pluralistic.net/2020/03/16/tiktoks-secrets/#3dp-breathfree
It turns out that these makers weren't just saving lives, they were also taking a legal risk. That's because when they asked the manufacturer for help with the project, the manufacturer countered by threatening to sue them for patent infringement.
https://it.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-manca-la-valvola-per-uno-strumento-di-rianimazione-e-noi-la-stampiamo-in-3d-accade-nellospedale-di-chiari-brescia/
The part they printed cost them 1 euro, while replacing the system would cost a reported EUR10,000.
In a heartfelt, and soul-searching post, one of the people behind the project says he won't try to distribute the files he created.
https://www.facebook.com/Ing.Cristian.Fracassi/posts/10222339428782713
I can't help but wonder if he's hoping to mollify the corporation whose threats he ignored to help save lives.

If nothing is for sale, how will covid stimulus work? (permalink)
I'm a believer in Modern Monetary Theory and the idea that state deficit spending is not intrinsically inflationary – only when the state is trying to procure things the private sector wants, so they get into a bidding war.
https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2019/4/16/18251646/modern-monetary-theory-new-moment-explained
In theory, the covid contraction is a great candidate for MMT stimulus. If people are stockpiling cash and thus eliminating their discretionary spending (40% of US GDP!), then the state can procure the discretionary items without triggering inflation.
Or there could be a hybrid, such as distributing vouchers to the public, redeemable for discretionary purchases – instead of bailing out aviation, we could buy people plane tickets, for example.
But that runs into a big problem: there's another reason people aren't making discretionary purchases, which is that those goods and services aren't available (manufacture has been disrupted by social distancing) or aren't safe (flying is incompatible with social distancing).
In this case, it seems to me that stimulus spending runs the risk of being inflationary (when everyone tries to redeem their plane ticket vouchers at once) or useless (people throw away their vouchers). Stimulus + supply shock = ??
That's not to rule out stimulus altogether, but it does suggest that the stimulus needs to be targeted, especially considering the size of the bailout that Wall Street is bandying about: trillions, in a matter of days.
https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/the-coronavirus-calls-for-wartime-economic-thinking
The GOP is calling for a $1,000/person bailout, but as @yvessmith says, this isn't much when it comes to the immediate expenses that affected people need to cover, like rent, mortgage, and, of course, treating covid-related illness without insurance.
https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2020/03/why-sending-1000-checks-to-everyone-wont-solve-the-coronavirus
Maybe, instead, help to cover mortgage and rent, along with anti-eviction/foreclosure rules; help with utilities, expanded food aid, and swift Medicare for All. Then, once the crisis is passed, a big stimulus package – for people, not banks – that gets us buying stuff again?
TBH, I don't know. It's weird to feel skeptical of stimulus, given how valuable demand-side relief would have been over the past decade+. Obviously we don't want another 2008 plute bonanza giveaway, but we also don't want to inject ever more money to chase ever-fewer goods.

How to make your own toilet paper (permalink)
Making toilet paper at home is a pretty on-the-nose craft to try with your covid-isolated kiddos. You need newsprint, leaves/grass (as a cellulosic binder) and baby oil.
https://www.ehow.com/how_4514690_make-toilet-paper.html
Soak the paper until ink is mostly gone, slowly boil with leaves/grass, simmer 1h, bring to boil for 30m, adding water and skimming foam. Remove, ladle out excess water. Mix 4tbsps of baby oil in with pulp. Scoop pulp onto a towel, press with a rolling pin.
Gently beat out lumps with a rubber mallet, add another towel on top. Cover with a board and add weights. Wait 30m. Flip over, remove towel and leave to dry in sun. Cut into strips and use (sparingly).

Plague precautions from 1665 (permalink)
ORDERS CONCEIVED AND PUBLISHED BY THE LORD MAYOR AND ALDERMEN OF THE CITY OF LONDON CONCERNING THE INFECTION OF THE PLAGUE, 1665
https://brucesterling.tumblr.com/post/612917764072636416/orders-conceived-and-published-by-the-lord-mayor
Every parish needs examiners. Refuse duty and you go to prison: "persons of good sort and credit chosen and appointed by the alderman, his deputy, and common council of every ward, by the name of examiners, to continue in that office the space of two months at least."
Examiners must "inquire and learn from time to time what houses in every parish be visited, and what persons be sick, and of what diseases…[I]f they find any person sick of the infection, to give order to the constable that the house be shut up."
Infected homs get 24/7 surveillance two watchmen: "these watchmen have a special care that no person go in or out of such infected houses whereof they have the charge, upon pain of severe punishment."
They'll also get you groceries and lock up your shop.
Women "of honest reputation" are appointed by physicians as "searchers" to inspect the dead and determine cause of death. Searchers are helped by newly appointed "able and discreet chirurgeons," charged with ensuring that "a true report made of the disease."
Nurse-keepers have to be quarantined for 28 days after their patients die.
If plague is found in a house, the whole household is locked in for 28 days. Prior to sequestration, their personal effects have to be aired, treated with fire, and then perfumed. Anyone known to have visited a plague house is locked down for 28 days, along with their household, with the same airing, flaming and perfuming business.
Plague-dead may only be buried after sunset and before sunrise, with no mourners in attendance. No sermons or eulogies allowed. Graves must be 6 feet deep. All funerals are banned. Personal effects of the plague-dead must be destroyed, not given away or sold.
Public notice: "Every house visited be marked with a red cross of a foot long in the middle of the door.. and with these usual printed words… 'Lord, have mercy upon us,' to be set close over the same cross, there to continue until lawful opening of the same house."
Cab drivers can continue as normal, but if they carry someone thought to have plague they have to retire their hackney-coaches for 5-6 days and give them a thorough airing.
[[I sense that this may be a weak spot in the whole plan]]
There's also new sanitation rules requiring regular sweepings and rakings of "filth" from the streets, with all the human waste being dumped far from the city and not in local gardens. Smelly or rotten food-sales are banned.
Cops are charged with sweeping up and punishing beggars, who are banned from the streets.
No live entertainment: "all plays, bear-baitings, games, singing of ballads, buckler-play, or such-like causes of assemblies of people be utterly prohibited."
All restaurants are closed. Feasting is banned.
Bars are OK, but under suspicion, and must close by 9PM. The rule covers "tippling in taverns, ale-houses, coffee-houses, and cellars."

In America: But On The Wrong Side of the Wall
A large majority of Americans believe that Pres.Tump’s “beautiful wall” will do nothing to stop the illegal movement of people or drugs; the people can use Aero Mexico, the drugs come in by truck, and they can both use the tunnels if needed. The presidential frenzy to “finish that wall” continues, nonetheless, fueled by his apparently bottomless septic pit of bad faith.
The plans made public for the wall in the Rio Grande valley indicate a fence and a border patrol road to follow the levees that contain the river; much like the sections already in place that wrap around Brownsville and McAllen. These levees are generally on private property and often a good distance from the river and border. So if your property happens to be on the wrong side of the levee, the plans call for it to be condemned, isolated, or bulldozed.
To see what that means we visited three places on the wrong side to talk to people and see what is happening.
The Jackson Chapel is in San Juan, a suburb of McAllen, and its attached cemetery has been a burial ground for the indigenous Carrizo Indians for millennia before Europeans swept through here. The stones now show largely hispanic graves and there is a small area for veterans from WWI onwards. Today there is a large group of volunteers from the local community and other native American tribes camped in solidarity and ready to resist any construction that might occur. They made us very welcome in explaining what was at stake here and the photographs show the levee right at the back of the graves that would carry the fence and isolate or destroy this site.
There has been a Lomita Chapel in Mission since 1767 and this one was built in 1865 for the aid and support of traveling missionaries from the Cavalry of Christ serving the local ranches. It is now a delightful public park and place of quiet reflection that is also on the wrong side of the proposed wall. When we visited there was, of course, a ubiquitous white Customs and Border Patrol truck with its green stripe perched on the levee keeping a look out for undesirables.
The National Butterfly Center is an educational non-profit also in Mission with about half its land inside the levee providing a hiking path to the wetlands and the river that will all disappear with a fence. The team there told us about a meeting that evening where the local community was planning to meet the ACLU to learn about their rights to prepare for what is next. We found Frances Madeson packing her homemade granola to be handed out at the meeting; she called it “Border Wall Crumble” which has a nice aspirational ring to it as a bumper sticker or hashtag.
When we say “community” here we mean people of color or people with few resources and even less influence; a community that has a history of being ignored by elected officials and abused by people in uniform who act solely for business interests. This is a group that has no history of resistance.
There are a number of fears that the Wall brings into this environment:
- The construction project is a funnel of money with precious little oversight delivered to those who are connected . The costs for a simple fence are astronomical. In addition, the ReadID Act of 2005 gives the Department of Homeland Security extraordinary powers to waive compliance with 48 different laws in order to build a wall. “Clean Air Act? Clean Water Act? Why should a wall damage our water?”
- The wall will make it easier for CBP to round up migrants and asylum seekers and flush them into the for-profit prison industry system where the Supreme Court just said they can be legally detained indefinitely; generating millions of dollars a day of profits.
- The wall will be in America and block access to previously public areas used for recreation or education. The wall with armed guards will then also block access for observation of anything else that is happening on the “outside” of the wall but inside America.
- Because this is Texas, the oil and gas industry is smelling opportunity everywhere and the Jackson Cemetery area is already slated to be a corridor for a gas pipeline and an LNG terminal.
All these points create a recipe for corruption that will last forever. Overall we have a new Border-Industrial Complex that is built on opportunism and cynicism and will be very hard to undo even with a new President and Senate.
Human grief be damned; we’re making money here so get out of the way.

Director’s Notebook: Miss Bennet - Christmas at Pemberley
Tumblr media
Our patron saint of rom-coms, Jane Austen, depicted in an 1810 portrait by her sister, Cassandra.
Pride, Prejudice, and Christmas I was approached by Craig Willis about directing Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley sometime in early 2018 with the question: “Are you interested in directing a sequel to Pride and Prejudice by Lauren Gunderson for our holiday show? Jeanette will do the costumes.” Lauren Gunderson? Jane Austen? Holiday show? Jeanette? Check! Check! Check! Check! My response was an immediate and enthusiastic: “Hell yeah!”
Miss Bennet is my third Gunderson piece at OCT, having had the good fortune to direct Silent Sky and Revolutionists! in past seasons. I have nothing but positive feelings about both experiences. I truly enjoy Gunderson’s work, which in my experience is witty and thoughtful and melds well with my own comic sensibilities. I always enjoy directing for its various challenges regardless of the piece (I said “yes” to taking on Miss Bennet while in the dystopian throes of 1984). But there is a certain pleasure I get from working on something that I know will give people warm, fuzzy feelings and laughter. This is exactly what people (audiences, the cast, the production team) need in a time of year where it gets dark by 5:00 pm and we’re all slightly on edge with the various stresses of the upcoming holidays. Thus far, rehearsals have been a pleasure . . . getting to spend my evenings with a talented group of fun and charming people? Awesome! And just imagine how lovely that will be when they’re all decked out in gorgeous Regency attire!
Jane Austen: Her Blessed Lady of the Rom Com Miss Bennet is a rom-com in every sense of the word. While generally speaking, I don’t love this genre, there are good and bad examples of it and I have certainly directed my share of rom-coms. Miss Bennet happens to be a very good example of a modern rom-com. Here, Gunderson and her collaborator Margot Melcon have created story that satisfies the mechanics of the genre while capturing Jane Austen’s wit and style and offering a sensitive and nuanced exploration of friendship, family dynamics, and forgiveness. Yes, of course the lovers smooch in the end, but there is so much more to the story.
While rom-coms in their contemporary manifestation have a long history stretching back to the days of Classical Roman Comedy (or as I describe them to my Theatre History students: “A story of a dumb young girl and a dumb young boy who are too dumb to figure out how to get together without the intervention of their smarter and more interesting servants”) we owe a debt to Jane Austen and her keen eye for observing human foibles and revealing the humor in our struggles to understand each other.
The author of six full-length novels (two published posthumously), Austen was one of the first female authors to make a living as a writer. Her works have been cherished by generations of readers. In spite of her successes, the details of her biography are clouded with mystery and by an attempt on her family’s part to control her image after her death at the age of 41. For example, Jane had written over 3,000 letters to her sister Cassandra, but for some reason most of the letters were destroyed in 1843. What was Cassandra trying to hide? What scandal could be so offensive? We may never know. And much like with Shakespeare, we are left to speculate based on the works she left behind.
Austen, the daughter of an Anglican rector, lived between the worlds of the elite society of the English gentry and the lower classes. She was educated and afforded opportunities to express herself creatively to friends an family. But, her precarious financial situation limited the choice in suitors for herself and Cassandra. Neither sister married while both suffered bad luck in love. Cassandra’s fiance, Thomas Fowle, died of Yellow Fever and little is known about Jane’s relationship with Tom LeFroy other than it ended rather abruptly, likely upon the intervention of his family.
Given the rather disappointing romantic biographies of Jane and Cassandra, it seems logical she might retreat into her imagination and create unconventionally witty protagonists who, like the Austen sisters, possess little fortune, but unlike them, the Bennet and Dashwood sisters secure happy endings with loving (and often fabulously wealthy) husbands.

The 2005 film version of Pride and Prejudice directed by Joe Wright.
Pride and Prejudice, first published in 1813, is likely Austen’s most enduring and beloved novel having inspired multiple film, television, and theatrical adaptations. The story centers around Lizzy Bennet, the smart and lively second eldest sister in a family with five daughters, and her rocky road towards love and marriage to the enigmatic and wealthy Mr. Darcy. The world of Longbourn and Pemberley are populated with a vivid cast of characters including the insufferably tedious Mr. Collins, the long-suffering anxious Mrs. Bennet, and the beautiful snobbish Caroline Bingley. As Lizzy and Darcy navigate the complications of love and courtship in the rigidly-structured British aristocracy, Austen exposes the challenges young women face to lead happy and fulfilling lives when so few options are available.
Miss Bennet is set two years after the end of Pride and Prejudice. Lizzy and Mr. Darcy are happily married as are elder sister Jane and her beloved Charles Bingley. Considered unsuitable misfits by Caroline Bingley and the formidable Lady Catherine de Bourgh in the original story, Jane and Lizzy have triumphed over pomposity and become wives rich and handsome men. While Lizzy and Jane didn’t come to their happy endings easily, most of the objections to them were due to perceptions of their family. Mr. Bennet raised his daughters to have their own minds and do as they pleased without caring for what reputation such an unconventional upbringing might inspire among their peers. With little money to provide dowries for his daughters and their estate to be left to their male cousin, the Bennet sisters have little to bring to a marriage other than whatever charm they might possess. In the end, this is all well and good for Jane (considered the most beautiful and kind young woman in their community) and the confident and self-possessed Lizzy. But what of the three younger Bennet sisters?
As chronicled in the novel and further explored in Miss Bennet, Lydia’s flirtatious behavior sparks a scandal that may very well have destroyed what little good reputation the Bennet family had were it not for the secret intervention of Mr. Darcy. The other two sisters, Kitty and Mary, are among the least developed in the novel.
Jane Austen provides little information about middle sister, Mary, the romantic heroine of Miss Bennet. Unlike Lizzy and Jane who are both attractive in looks and personality, she is awkward and coarse. She is portrayed as bookish and dour, lacking in the social graces her older sisters possess. Younger sisters Lydia and Kitty are pretty and confident while Mary flounders in the middle, seemingly destined for the life of a spinster.
Gunderson and Melcon devise the plot for Miss Bennet based on a single line from Pride and Prejudice in which Lizzy writes home to her family: “Mr. Darcy sends you all the love in the world that he can spare from me. You are all to come to Pemberley at Christmas.” The stage is set, as it were, revisiting seven characters from the original novel including the happily wed Lizzy and Darcy, the soon-to-be parents Charles and Jane, Lydia, Mary, and Lady Catherine’s sickly and awkward daughter Anne de Bourgh. A new character, Arthur de Bourgh, distant cousin to Darcy, joins the family for Christmas after recently inheriting the de Bourgh estate of Rosings. Will this newcomer and Mary find love and happiness or will their romance be thwarted before it has a chance to bloom? I think we all know the answer to that question. What makes Miss Bennet such a delightful piece of theatre is not the inevitable rom-com happy ending, but the further development of the quirky characters and nuanced relationships we are familiar with and the more contemporary lens through which they are viewed.
I will explore the themes and characterizations in the next post! For now . . . I need to get ready for rehearsal!

Top 5 Phantoms
So, I decided to make my list of my top five actors who have played the Phantom because why not? But I did not realize that it was going to be this hard! There are so many good ones! Anyways, before I start my actual list, I do have two honorable mentions:
Tumblr media
Max Niemeyer
Oberhausen: Principal Raoul/Phantom u/s (2016-?) Side Note: I really need a date.
There will be one understudy on my actual list, but I knew I would severely regret it if I didn’t give a shout-out to the amazing German understudy that is Max Niemeyer. First of all, HIS HIGH NOTES!!! Seriously, it’s like he’s a different person when he’s in his falsetto range because he just makes it seem so effortless. Also, his voice in general is just so beautiful. I definitely recommend checking out some audio boots of his Phantom. There are a ton floating around Tumblr. My personal recommendation is his ‘All I Ask Of You (Reprise)’. Gives me chills every time.
Tumblr media
Ben Crawford
Broadway: Principal Phantom (April 16, 2018-present)
Again, there have been no video boots of Crawford yet, so it wouldn’t be fair to judge him solely based on the one audio that I’ve heard. But from what I got to hear, his performance is very solid especially considering this is his first time in the role. And like Max, I LOVE his Final Lair. By the way, if anyone happens to find a somewhat decent video that is NOT NFT (I don’t want anyone to get in trouble), feel free to direct me towards the source.
So, on to the actual list!
Disclaimer: This is just my opinion. I highly respect all five of these actors. If it’s any consolation, this was a very tough decision to make.
Tumblr media
#5: Earl Carpenter Principal West End Phantom (2005-2007, Dec. 2011-Mar. 2012) Principal 25th Anniversary Tour Phantom (Oct. 2012-May 2013) This may come as a shock to some people because Earl is one of the most well known Phantoms. It’s not that I absolutely hate his performance, because that’s definitely not the case. I am a huge fan of his ‘Stranger Than You Dreamt It’. Side Note: Yes, I did see the flub where Earl lost his coat. And in all honesty, I think he looks kind of hot without it. Anyways, the reason why Earl is so low on the list is because I honestly think he’s a little overrated. Not as much as Ramin Karimloo (I love you, Ramin, but your Phantom is not THAT good), but he’s among that group of actors. I mean, I love him, but there are plenty of other actors who have played the Phantom that should get a lot more love. But still, I LOVE his ‘Stranger Than You Dreamt It’. Plus, the guy’s got a great voice.
Tumblr media
#4: Howard McGillin Broadway: Principal Phantom (1999-July 25, 2009) Longest running Phantom in Broadway history. It would be a crime not to include Howard on the list. If I had made this list about a year ago, he would’ve been #1. But as I’ve gotten exposed to more Phantoms, he’s slowly made his way to #4 because while I love his performance, his voice honestly doesn’t make me think of the Phantom. I mean, it’s not bad, it’s just not the kind of voice that I would expect for the Phantom. Fortunately, his performance often makes up for his voice because it is just so fun to watch! Howard’s Phantom can be really terrifying sometimes! Plus, he’s gay, and considering that I’ll take LGBTQ representation on Broadway any day, he gets a few bonus points from a bisexual Phan. To summarize, performance is great, voice is kind of out of place.
Tumblr media
#3: David Arnsperger
Hamburg: Phantom alt. (Dec. 2013-Aug. 2015)
Oberhausen: Principal Phantom (2016-?)
Rule One: The German productions of PotO are almost always breathtaking. If you want to know why I said ‘almost always’, all you have to do is look up the Essen production (especially anything that has to do with Uwe Kröger). Anyways, David Arnsperger is one of the best Phantoms in Germany’s history of the show, if not THE best. If you want to know just how amazing he is, see the post that atruevaljean did two years ago. They do a much better job than I’d probably do. In summary, David has a nice operatic voice and he really brings a lot of great things to his portrayal of the Phantom.
Tumblr media
#2: Laird Mackintosh Toronto: Raoul/Phantom u/s (If someone could give me the dates, that would help a lot.) Broadway: Monsieur André/Phantom u/s (Aug. 26, 2013-present) I told you there would be one understudy on this list! Anyways, I put Laird in 2nd place because he NEEDS to be principal (and no, transition periods do not count)! When I saw a bootleg of him and Kaley Ann Voorhees, I couldn’t believe that he was just an understudy because his performance is so unique. Plus, his voice just fits the Phantom so well. Side Note: Another reason why I put Laird in 2nd place is not only is he an amazing singer and actor, but he is also an amazing photographer. Seriously, check out his Instagram. He takes great photos. Plus, he’s also very nice to his fans. Feel free to check out my appreciation post for more details.
Tumblr media
#1: John Cudia
Broadway: The Phantom (May 22, 2008-July 30, 2008), (July 27, 2009-Sep. 4, 2010)
For a while, John Cudia and Laird Mackintosh were tied for the #1 spot. It took me a little bit to decide between the two of them. But in the end, John Cudia came out on top. Here’s why:
1. One of the things that I look for in my favorite Phantom is their voice. For my ideal Phantom, they have to sound like a genuine opera singer. John Cudia is a classical singer, and it really shows in his performance. He is wonderful to listen to and his falsetto range is absolutely perfect.
2. Of course, the performance plays a huge part in my judging as well. The way that John moves perfectly captures the Phantom for me, especially in ‘Music of the Night’. And in the ‘Final Lair’, he perfectly balances his violent side with his vulnerable side. Plus, John’s ‘Point of No Return’ gives me chills every single time. I always love the Phantoms who at least try to sound like Piangi.
3. Finally, John is just an amazing human being. I’ve heard stories from my fellow Phans that he is incredibly nice at stage door. Plus, look up some of his Broadway vlogs on YouTube. He’s freaking adorable!
In conclusion, John Cudia takes #1 not because he captures the Phantom’s voice and personality, but also because he is an angel on and off stage. Plus, in my opinion, he is the Phantom.
So, that’s my top five. What are yours? Let me know in the comments and I’d be happy to discuss!

The Best of 2005–2013 is a greatest hits album by American heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold, released by the band's former label, Warner Music Group, on December 2, 2016. The album covers songs from all of the band's albums released under Warner Bros., from City of Evil to Hail to the King, including covers and one-off singles released in between.(1) The band members themselves have not endorsed or supported this album due to it being released without their consent, knowledge or involvement. The album has since been removed from digital streaming services.
Background(edit)
In early 2016, Avenged Sevenfold left Warner Bros. for Capitol Records, resulting in a legal battle between the record label and the band.(2) In response to the allegedly-leaked release date of the band's seventh album, falsely leaked and titled Voltaic Oceans with a December 9 release date by Chris Jericho over Instagram, Warner Bros. announced The Best of 2005–2013, to be released one week prior to the leaked release date, on December 2. However, the band officially surprise-released the album as The Stage on October 28, to which the label quickly changed the release date to capitalize on traffic, but reverted to its December 2 release.

Singer M. Shadows has openly expressed disdain about the release of the greatest hits album without the band's knowledge, stating 'You’re gonna try to put this record out right before our new record just to undercut us and try to confuse the casual fan, like, 'Is this the new record? Or is that the new record?' Or parents buying stuff for Christmas. So it's just really childish.'(3)

A song about the people yearning to bring back and greet the coming Christian king to rule in the name of God's son Jesus Christ in the near future. In order to save our Western society that has been polluted and corrupted by the ungodly intellectual illuminated illuminaries, working with the old Bolshevik communist, Zionist Nazi slave driven mentality, that has been used on us with the throat cutters now, to create and accomplish their agenda for the one world order rule, who calls themselves the globalists. That are against hailing to the coming of the king, like they have always been, and now who likes for us to be against the Christian 'czar' Vladimir Putin that are demonizing him like he is the new Hitler to scapegoat for war, and don't want to be surfing themselves to 'Hail To The King' and serve God.

The song is not about a tyrant king. Because even after the the rebellion of the people in that interpretation happens they still hail to the king. I think the song is about the second comming of the messiah. Every interpretation I have come across that says otherwise leaves out the part about being born again but it's to late to atone. There are so many other correlations to be made with him being referred to as the king, the one, standing in the sun or the light. The bad has references to god in there songs all the time this is no different.

Re: ESXI Problem Hyperthreading unmitigated msripada May 31, 2019 6:37 AM ( in response to insearchof ) pls check the KB VMware Knowledge Base. The VMware scheduler properly accounts for this halt time, and charges a virtual machine running with the full resources of a core more than a virtual machine running on a half core. This approach to processor management ensures that the server does not violate any of the standard ESXi. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the security issues related to speculative execution in Intel processors described by CVE-2018-3646 (L1 Terminal Fault - VMM), CVE-2018-3620 (L1 Terminal Fault - OS), and CVE-2018-3615 (L1 Terminal Fault - SGX) as they apply to VMware products. It's a long shot but I think of this song as the rein of Hitler. 'Watch your tongue or have it cut from your head' Those who opposed Hitler were suppressed in violent ways. This song is clearly about a tyrant king who suppressed opposition. It's an idea, but it's probably not about him especially coming from a band like this.

My interpretation is like others have said, about a tyrant king, but the ending shows something dark not sure if it's death or the devil! But the song is badass!

Hail to the King is an occult song. It's referencing Saturn which rules death, decay, slowness, cold, sharpness, rings, winter, grief, solemnity and time. 'Watch your tongue or have it cut from your head' - Saturn is a very serious entity. He doesn't joke or love. As the angel Cassiel who governs Saturn once said, 'I leave love to others.' 'Save your life by keeping whispers unsaid' - Saturn is quiet which is manifest in winter silence for example. So this line is saying respect Saturn and rest in the stillness. 'hildren roam the streets, now orphans of war' - War brings about death. Losing one's parents to war brings mourning and grief. All Saturnian characteristics. 'Bodies hanging in the streets to adore' - Don't fear death, come to terms with it by understanding it's place in life. 'Royal flames will carve a path in chaos' This carving a path could be a reference to the shape of Saturn's knife, the scythe. 'Bringing daylight to the night' This line references bringing attention and action to the night which Saturn rules. 'Death is riding into town with armor,' Pretty clear 'They've come to take all your rights' You can't have rights if you're dead. 'Hail to the king, hail to the one Kneel to the crown, stand in the sun Hail to the king' Saturn is king because he rules time and death. Therefor, let's honor him as king. Also, historically Saturn has always been worshipped and there is even confusion between the Sun and Saturn hence 'Stand in the sun' line. Some believe Saturn was once a sun which undergone a change with cataclysmic consequences on earth. Others believe Saturn always was the planet that the 'sun' referred to. 'Blood is spilt while holding keys to the throne Born again, but it's too late to atone No mercy from the edge of the blade Dare escape and learn the price to be paid' This refers to the inevitability of death and Saturn's influence on our lives. Saturn strikes us with cold, sharp fear. The blade is another reference to the Scythe. Saturn doesn't do love so if you try to escape his grasp, you WILL lose and indeed learn the 'price to be paid' for your arrogance. The rest is pretty clear as well. Hope this helps. This is coming from a magician. Additionally, Saturn worship is seen in wedging RINGS, halos above the heads of saints (a reference to Saturn's rings) and countless other customs. It's deep. This is coming from a magician who evokes spirits. Honoring them in music is definitely an excellent way to reap the benefits of their office.

SO About Net Neutrality
I’ve been more or less going through the motions with little passion on this hellsite. E-mailing my reps, signing petitions, reblogging loud all-caps posts talking about being shut down and the world is ending and all that rot.
But I never actually looked into the researching the plans for the revisions to the net now for myself.
The thing about tumblr is that its aggressive and hyper-librel. On here its far easier to reblog and go with the flow to appease the loud typers with their huge font sizes and all-caps.
The thing is, for the most part, tumblr has a very unhealthy relationship with looking at both sides of a situation. Its fed by mass hysteria and has to be soothed by those with the time and patience to fact-check for themselves instead of blindly agreeing and following.
Those that do a lot of the shouting have a very ‘fingers-in-ears’ approach to learning from the side they disagree with and like to paint said side like a huge, terrible villain.
I’ve been kind of lax about the whole thing, mainly ‘cause I’m already addicited to the internet and some small part of my thinks my life might improve if I wasn’t on it all the time. However, that’s small minded so I started to read into the issue myself.
So be prepared for some unpopular opinions accompanied by links.
To start with, Ajit Pai is not an evil bad guy mc-dictator. He’s a chairman for the FCC, which stands for the Federal Communications Devision.
Think of the FCC as a sort of ACLU for the internet. It has rules and regulations and providers and site holders go to them to solve problems. However, it does not have unyielding power and say-all.
Say a provider does what we’re all fearing, they block you from viewing content in an effort to boost their own content. This actually happened in 2005:
“The most famous example of an ISP acting badly was a company called Madison River Communication which, in 2005, blocked ports used for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services, presumably to prop up their own alternative; it remains the canonical violation of net neutrality. It was also a short-lived one: Vonage quickly complained to the FCC, which quickly obtained a consent decree that included a nominal fine and guarantee from Madison River Communications that they would not block such services again. They did not, and no other ISP has tried to do the same; the reasoning is straightforward: foreclosing a service that competes with an ISP’s own service is a clear antitrust violation. In other words, there are already regulations in place to deal with this behavior, and the limited evidence we have suggests it works.“
Thompson, Ben. “Pro-Neutrality, Anti-Title II.” Stratechery by Ben Thompson, 29 Nov. 2017, stratechery.com/2017/pro-neutrality-anti-title-ii/.
The FCC ruled that yes, that behavior was bad and it shouldn’t be allowed to happen. It has only happened once in the past and the FCC made it clear that it does not support that. So, lets look into the sort of things the FCC is looking to change, in their eyes, for the better of the internet.
Despite what we’ve been reading the FCC isn’t hellbent on giving money-grubbing cable companies the keys to the internet to regulate the sites we go on. Rather, its more like a phone plan where you have different stages you can pay for in order to have different things. This is something we’re already accustomed to, data plans. Most of us have a phone with a data plan, right? And your provider probably has a variety of data plans to choose from with data caps at a certain about of gigs up to more expensive plans that offer unlimited gigs. Your access to the goods provided on your phone are not limited, you are only limited by your gig usage. Ex: my two brothers and I shared a data plan together because it was cheaper to split it that way. Through this data plan on our phones we all, collectively, had 5 gigs of data that we could use per month. Not very much huh? Well, we’re cheap. And you know what? It was fine. We used our data sparingly and hooked our phones to wifi when we could. If we went over our data we got a warning that we would have to pay $x to get an additional gig to ride out the month. We still had access to whatever we wanted: internet, spotify, netflix, youtube. We just payed for the cheapest plan that had a small data cap. Eventually we got sick of the data cap and upgraded to unlimited.
Now, you’re probably thinking: I don’t WANT to spend more to access the same stuff I LIKE the internet as it is
Well, lets keep digging.
the internet we have now already has certain data caps and exceeding it already causes our internet to move slow, especially with streaming videos, downloading huge files, etc. Our internet providers’ biggest selling point is fast download speeds and instant streaming. They offer a variety of capped data plans varying speeds for different prices. Again, we STILL have access to all the SAME content, just at varying speeds depending on our own needs and willingness to pay for certain plans.
ie: my mom skims facebook every other day and checks her e-mail on weekends. She doesn’t need high speed for that, she’s content with what she has. Now, my dad and I use the internet to create videos, stream and teleconference. We need faster internet speeds so we pay for more gigs.
That is how the internet currently is.
So what does the FCC want to change?
The FCC actually wants to rollback some of the harsher regulations that have been set in place since 2015:
“The Federal Communications Commission has announced a total repeal of Obama-era net neutrality rules, a sweeping rejection of Obama-era rules meant to keep the internet a level playing field and prevent companies from charging additional fees for faster internet access. US telecoms have pledged to broadly respect net neutrality principles, however, and this ruling will give internet service providers the freedom to experiment with new pricing models and prioritization of content.”
Coren, Michael J. “Without net neutrality in Portugal, mobile internet is bundled like a cable package.” Quartz, Quartz, 30 Oct. 2017, qz.com/1114690/why-is-net-neutrality-important-look-to-portugal-and-spain-to-understand/.
Now I know you read that and are jumping to THIS scary image”
Tumblr media
Which, by the way, is fake. It’s from 2014 and it was a mock up image for fake ‘internet plans’
The phrasing is also off. What we need to think of is that cable companies are competitive. The ones with the lowest prices get the MOST customers. So say Verizon says ‘hell yes, I’m gonna charge you $45 extra bucks to let you get better streaming speeds to youtube and netflix.’ but then over there in the corner Comcast is like ‘huh, that’s a lousy deal, we’ll let you keep accessing those speeds for $15 a month!’ and then At&T is like ‘Screw that, you guys can keep those speeds for no extra cost!’ That’s business competition, and yeah, some providers aren’t available in certain areas and that price gouge can be obnoxious but we’re already dealing with that in my city where certain neighborhoods have this provider and some have a different one.
What you might be fearing is ‘well, what if they all raise their prices astronomically and don’t back down?’ Well, that’s a monopoly and those are very illegal. Remember how the FCC busted Madison River Communications? You bet your butt they’d bust a monopoly. Systematic abuse is already not tolerated and evidence suggests that its not the goal of the reform.
So what IS the goal of the reform?
The reform wants to roll back some heavy regulations that occurred over the past two years (like speed regulations, data caps, etc) to allow the internet to expand it broadband and development like it did before 2015. Sounds ok.
Personally, I really not worried about this. The more I read about it the less horrible it sounds. A lot of posts have brought it way out of proportion and yes there are some aspects about this that I really really don’t like.
I DON’T like that verizon censors tumblr posts about Net Neutrality.
I DON’T like algorithms that filter people into their own niches and don’t allow them to think for themselves (show the people what they want and they won’t complain about what they don’t see)
I’ve taken a wait-and-see approach now that I’ve read up on plans and FAQs and the various debunked rumors for the reform.
Honestly if the cable companies screw around the people will just drop them and go with the least scummiest one. Hit ‘em where hurts, in their wallet.
This ends my insanely long piece but this IS tumblr so I implore you to not just take my own research at face value. I want you to look things up for yourselves and make a well-reasoned and educated decision.
Yes I’m for an open and free internet, so is Ajit Pai, he just wants to change some things to make it better.
