Here’s the latest update on the whole Grain Free diets and Heart Disease thing that’s going on.

For those not following the issue - there has been a spike in cases of Dilated CardioMyopathy (abbreviated to DCM, a type of heart disease affecting the muscle of the heart) in the USA noted in particular among dogs fed a grain free diet.

(Picture from Richard Wooley’s explanation, which is very easy to read for pet owners so I recommend you start there)

Dilated Cardiomyopathy results in heart muscle that’s just weak and flabby, it doesn’t contract properly. And as that’s the number 1 most important job for the heart to do, that’s seriously bad and a lot of these affected dog’s don’t live very long.

There are multiple known causes or risk factors associated with DCM. Genetics is a big one, with large breeds of dogs being most commonly affected. In particular Boxers and Dobermans are notorious for it, but any breed can be affected with a honorable mention for the Cocker Spaniel which develops this condition more commonly than expected for a smaller dog. Cat’s can develop it too, but in cats it was mostly associated with a taurine deficiency. In some purebred dogs (Golden retrievers, Cockers again, some others) there also seems to be a link with taurine and carnatine metabolism, which is why those people that insist vegan diets are great for dogs deserve to have their hot water service break down in the middle of their shower.

There is also a little information on cats.

I’m going to go through all of the graphs, but under the cut as this is a long post.

First, some notes about the FDA investigation. They have been limiting their counted cases to dogs which are definitely confirmed to have DCM with a heart ultrasound. A heart ultrasound is expensive compared to an Xray, so there are likely more cases out there which have been excluded simply because their medical investigations have not been thorough enough or, potentially, because the dogs had acute symptoms and just died. This disease can present with dogs that looked fine one day, and are collapsed or dead the next.

In particular, small breed dogs almost always have mitral valve dysplasia when they present with signs of heart failure, so clients may elect not to have a heart ultrasound done in order to save money on diagnostics to put it towards the actual symptomatic treatment. If this is a nutritional cause, there may be significant under-reporting of cases in small breed dogs.

Time:

This graph shows a significant jump in the number of DCM reports to the FDA in 2018. What happened in 2018? The general public was notified and a call was put out for more reports. Now keep in mind this is 500 or so cases out of 70+ million dogs and cats in the USA, but there is an association loosely mapped. Of particular interest is the FDA reporting cases where multiple unrelated animals in the same household were affected, which suggests something environmental, like nutrition.

Breeds:

The breed breakdown is interesting. Normally I would have expected Boxers and my beloved Dobermans to be high on the list, but this isn’t what we’re seeing. These cases are dominated by Golden Retrievers and Labradors, and mixed breeds are coming in second. Even working in emergency centers I couldn’t tell you when I last saw a mixed breed dog come down with DCM. The report also mentions a maltese, JRT and pomeranian coming down with DCM which is, frankly, bizarre.

But you know what Labradors and Golden Retrievers are quite notorious for? Allergies. So I could see the attraction in putting them on a grain free diet with all the ‘grain allergy’ talk that goes around (Note: Usually not allergic to grain, but to another protein source, and a lot of grain free diets were also limited ingredient and novel protein, which is why they were helpful).

The Diets:

Straight up, most of these cases are being fed all dry food, or majority dry food. I don’t know about the demographics in the USA, but if exclusive dry food feeding is less than 20x more common than other types, then this is significant.

And here’s the dietary components. Grain Free is looking highly suspect there, but so is the presence of peas and lentils. I would expect peas to be more common than lentils based on the diets I see in Australia, but certainly still a concern.

And finally the brands:

Now a confession: Being in Australia, I have no idea what most of those brands are. They’re not reaching us yet. But we also haven’t seen the upswing in DCM cases reported from the USA.

And interestingly, a comparison of the protein sources from these diets.

Chicken makes sense, because it’s the most commonly fed protein in pet food, with a reputation for being easy to digest. Lamb (well, mutton) is super common in Australia too. Kangaroo had some people freaking out, worried that it might be at fault for a while, but as an Aussie I’m really not worried about that one at all. I’m inclined to think this graph just represents how common the different animal proteins are in the available diets, rather than identifying any in particular as an issue.

I was personally very interested to see whether tuna or other ocean fish showed up with a high frequency in these diets after the Advance Dermocare causing Megaoesophagus issue. We don’t know what caused that one either, and it was less dogs than this, but strongly associated, and the diet got pulled from the market.

Final thoughts:

We still don’t know what’s going on, but for what should be a fairly rare heart disease grain-free diets, and those with a high percentage of peas and legumes, are associated with DCM, including dogs which should not have a genetic predisposition towards it.

It might be the absence of grain

It might be the presence of large amounts of plant protein from peas and legumes

It might be another, unknown, toxic compound contaminating the ingredients

It might be a genetic predisposition made clinical by any of the above

It is probably not a simple nutrient deficiency, as all the tested diets have adequate levels of taurine and other known relevant nutrients.

It might be a relative nutrient deficiency, where a molecule is missing which facilitates the absorption of things like taurine. Or a molecule is present which prevents the absorption of taurine.

The plant proteins look a lot more suspicious than the animal proteins.

It might look like we don’t really know what’s going on here, but now we understand that we don’t really know what’s going on in a lot more detail than we did before.

We likely require a lot of data from healthy dogs being fed these suspicious diets (including blood and DNA) and that requires large scale data collection of the healthy cases as well as the affected ones.

If there’s one thing millennials around the world have in common, it’s a taste for coffee. As this group makes up a major percentage of the world’s coffee drinkers, it’s a generation worth taking note of if you’re a coffee shop or roaster wanting to stay ahead.

Tapping into this market is crucial for business success, but it won’t happen without an understanding of what trends drive their behaviour. To find out more, I spoke with two specialty coffee professionals about trends they’ve observed in coffee consumption.

What Are Millennials Looking For in Coffee?

Millennial coffee consumption can be characterised by many traits. However, for those looking for more insight into catering to the millennial consumer in a coffee setting, the following trends offer valuable information on their consumption habits.

Alternative Health Options

Millennials are more concerned with personal wellness than any generation before them, which may be because they have more access to information on their health than ever before. This concern has spilled over to their coffee consumption habits, with many seeking out decaffeinated options in an effort to keep their caffeine consumption in moderation.

With the amount of diagnosed food allergies on the rise, coffee consumption could also be impacted by those who’ve developed lactose or nut intolerances switching from traditional dairy milk to plant and nut-based options.

It’s noteworthy that consumers are learning that popular dairy alternatives such as almond and coconut milk have negative consequences on the environment and often violate human rights. Nicole is the Managing Director of Climpson & Sons, an East London specialty coffee shop that sources and roasts coffee. She says, “The rise of oat milk has been huge – we’ve seen about a 70% increase in oat flat whites from last year. Overall, we’ve seen about 50 to 60% increase in oat milk consumption across the board, [in] both hot and cold coffee drinks. I think we’ll see this continue as veganism and environmental considerations are considered. This is an easy win for people to be able to make a small change, and it still tastes good”.

Ralf is the owner of The Barn, which is a specialty coffee roastery in Berlin, Germany. He informed me that he already offers two low caffeine level coffees at his shops: “One lot is called Laurina and one is called Aramosa. [In] early 2019, we launched our low-caff coffee for people that are more sensitive to caffeine, for people that want to drink in the evening, or for people that just want to have less caffeine. They’re very flavoursome and enjoyable, and we’re really proud that we found a natural alternative to decaf”.

Better Quality Offerings

Specialty coffee is characterised by its high levels of quality, and the fact that every step of its journey, from growth to brewing, is constantly monitored in order to improve it. Origin is important, as it can impact a coffee’s flavour and profile, even amongst coffees of the same variety.

For millennials, quality trumps quantity. In the US, millennials have taken to specialty coffee, and drink more of it than any other generation. They’re also more likely to drink it outside the home, and will spend more on quality coffee, as they’re willing to pay for a drink that’s complex and innovative. A study by American beverage supplier S&D Coffee & Tea on millennial coffee consumption reinforces this, by revealing that millennials are concerned with a coffee’s origin, how it was roasted, and its brand when making a purchase decision.

According to Nicole, millennials “have a desire for crafted products, and they want to identify with these values geared towards sustainability, traceability and local or independent business[es]. People want authenticity so it’s an opportunity to share your story. This, in turn, creates the buy-in you need for people to come back. A genuine experience is priceless!”

She adds, “People want to be a part of something, share in this value system, and feel connected. At the end of the day, you can come for a cup of..coffee, but it’s more than that. There’s an opportunity to share an experience [and] engage with other people, in an increasingly digital world”.

Increased Environmental & Social Responsibility

Wanting to know where their coffee comes from – as well as how eco-friendly the milk they add to it is – is indicative of another concern that millennials have that impacts their coffee consumption. Environmental friendliness, sustainability, and social responsibility are all issues important to them.

They’re more price sensitive and less brand loyal than the generations that have come before them, which means that they expect companies to be more socially responsible without having to pay more for it.

They care about how well the farm workers involved in coffee production are paid, and if they have an established set of rights. With continual improvement comes a rise in prices, and higher quality beans are going to cost more to the consumer because they cost more in general. Therefore, the final product must compensate for this. As Ralf says, “specialty coffee is an opportunity to change the value chain of coffee…to really make a difference at origin at farm level. Not only to…pick the best lots, but to do some real work with farmers; to elevate them, to treat them as equal partners”.

For coffee shops looking to capitalise on this on a budget, the most significant solution could be being as honest as possible when it comes to ethical practices. For example, acknowledging that your coffee shop doesn’t have a cup recycling scheme is probably going to sit better with millennials than covering up the fact that most of them are sent to landfill.

As Nicole explains, this must be done genuinely and honestly: “Millennials seek ethically conscious buying behaviour, so the world is bombarded with the word ‘sustainable’. It is a bit of a buzz-word so to be able to find authenticity is the challenge for the specialty coffee industry.”

As millennials increasingly demand speed and convenience from their products and service providers, they’re turning to forms of coffee that are convenient and quick to prepare, but still taste as good as a four minute pour-over. This can be seen in the ever-growing popularity of cold coffee beverages, ready-to-drink beverages, and specialty instant coffee.

Between 2016 and 2017, the US saw cold brew sales increase up to 80%, and consumption rates show no sign of slowing down. Its popularity isn’t necessarily unique to American millennials, as one out of every five new coffees introduced to the global market in 2017 were cold brewed and ready-to-drink. While European markets remain resistant to cold coffee drinks, sales of iced coffee drinks are on the rise in countries like Australia and India.

As a group, millennials are twice as likely to drink cold coffee compared to older consumers, and cold brew is a beverage that most have either heard of or tried. Grabbing a bottle of ready-to-drink cold brew off a shelf will fit in perfectly with the busy, career-focused millennial lifestyle, allowing them to enjoy quality coffee whilst still keeping up with the fast pace of the modern world.

This demand for convenience that doesn’t compromise on quality can also be seen in the rise of specialty instant coffee. Businesses are beginning to sell quality instant coffee that can be consumed on the go, requiring only hot water and a cup.

While instant coffees have had a reputation for being poor quality, modern manufacturers are investing in labour intensive processes to preserve their flavour and aroma such as small batch brewing, secondary drying and an extended freezing process. Many manufacturers are also creating their products using better quality Arabica beans instead of the usual Robusta.

Ralf spoke to me about the specialty instant coffee that is available at The Barn, saying that “the convenience market is there. They want to have it quick…not everybody’s travelling with a grinder and an Aeropress and a kettle…The pouches are compostable, so it’s also environmentally friendly, and it tastes good”.

Vitamin D Deficiency Can Lead to Increased Allergies

Food allergy, a serious and potentially life-threatening medical condition, affects a growing number of Americans. According to Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE), 1 in 13 children now has a food allergy and every three minutes a food reaction sends someone to the emergency room.1

Food allergies are also estimated to affect nearly 4 percent of adults, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).2 While they are most common in babies and children, food allergies can develop at any age. Adults may even develop an allergy to foods they’ve previously eaten for years with no problem.

More than 170 foods have been reported to cause allergic reactions, but the eight major food allergens include milk, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts, wheat, soy and fish.3 However, as evidenced by the British teenager who recently died after eating sesame,4 this seed is also an emerging concern. The number of hospitalizations for food allergies have tripled from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s.5

Nearly 40 percent of children with food allergies have experienced a severe reaction, such as anaphylaxis. Typical food allergy symptoms may begin with hives, rash, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. This may be followed by coughing and wheezing. In severe cases, anaphylaxis can occur, which is when your throat swells and you may not be able to breathe.

The rising prevalence of food allergies has been particularly noticeable in the West, where there is also rising numbers suffering vitamin D deficiency.6 Nearly 7 percent of children in the U.K. and 9 percent of those in Australia suffer from food allergies.7

Is It a Food Allergy or Intolerance?

Sensitivities and food reactions are often mistaken for allergies. A true food allergy is mediated by the immune system and triggered by an antibody reaction to a protein in a specific food or drink. While most develop during childhood, the most common allergies known to develop in adults are allergies to shellfish, tree nuts and peanuts.8

Food sensitivity, also called food intolerance, is an unpleasant — usually gastrointestinal — reaction to something you’ve swallowed, but is not mediated by your immune system.9 For instance, a true allergy to milk is different from lactose intolerance, which triggers gastrointestinal symptoms from an inability to digest proteins in the milk.10

Type 1 food allergies involve immunoglobulin-e (IgE), an antibody in the blood and mast cells found in all body tissues. Food allergies mediated by IgE are triggered after you’ve eaten a food for the first time, after which cells produce IgE for the part of the food triggering the allergic reaction, called an allergen.

IgE is released and attaches to the surface of mast cells. This process sets the stage for the next time you’ve eaten a food with the specific allergen. The protein interacts with IgE and triggers mast cells to release histamine. Since some food allergens are not broken down by heat or stomach acid, they cross immediately into your bloodstream and may cause reactions throughout your body.11

IgE reactions may start with itchiness in your mouth, followed by symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain. If the allergen reaches your blood, it can trigger a drop in blood pressure; in your skin you may experience hives or eczema; and in the lungs it may trigger wheezing. Each of these reactions can take a few minutes or a couple of hours to develop and signal an immediate food allergy.

A second type of food allergy, Type 3, also called delayed food allergy, is mediated by immunoglobulin-g (IgG). These reactions occur hours and possibly even days following your exposure to the allergen. Individuals who suffer from Type 3 food allergies are often allergic to more than two types of food, and larger amounts of food over multiple meals are needed to provoke this reaction.12

You may experience some of the same types of symptoms, making it difficult to distinguish between an IgE and an IgG response. Foods triggering an IgG response are often favorite foods eaten in larger amounts. IgG responses do not typically show up on a skin test.

Rising Prevalence of Allergies Corresponds to Increasing Vitamin D Deficiency

Food allergies associated with IgE affects 3 percent of the population, with severe effects on daily life. Manifestations of the allergy are not only gastrointestinal, but also affect other organ systems and may lead to an anaphylactic response.13

While vitamin D also has known effects on lung and immune system development, as well as support of the immune system after birth,14 including asthma and allergic responses, it is also significant in the regulation of IgE.

The increase in allergies and sensitivities to foods is likely related to environmental factors and Western lifestyles. Developing nations have lower rates of allergic responses, and individuals with allergies are likely to live in urban rather than rural areas.

Although there is no single explanation for the rise in prevalence, one significant factor is the overwhelming vitamin D deficiency suffered by those who live in urban areas.15

The link between vitamin D deficiency, which has almost doubled in just over a decade in the U.S.,16 and poor regulation of IgE responses, may be a significant factor. Both of these play a role in the development, severity and course of allergic diseases, and help explain, at least in part, why so many adults are now developing food allergies.

Australia has the highest rate of confirmed food allergies, with one study finding 9 percent of 1-year-olds suffering from egg allergy.17 Australia initiated one of their most successful health campaigns to increase use of sun screen in 1981 with the slogan “Slip! Slop! Slap!”18

At the time, the campaign was aimed at lowering melanoma rates, which the government believed was the result of spending too much time in the sun.

Today, nearly 25 percent of Australia’s population is deficient in vitamin D. Despite these numbers, Choosing Wisely Australia, an initiative of NPS MedicineWise,19 does not recommend having routine testing for vitamin D unless you’re specifically at risk, including those who:20

Have a health condition affecting vitamin D absorption from their diet

Cover their body completely when outside

Are a baby of a vitamin D deficient mother

Spend the majority of their day indoors

Take medications affecting vitamin D

Avoid the sun completely

Have naturally dark skin

Suffer obesity

Considering the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, I strongly recommend getting your vitamin D level tested regardless of whether you fit into a high-risk category or not, and to make sure you’re actually within the ideal range of 60 to 80 ng/mL, and if below 60 ng/mL, take proactive steps to optimize your level. The fact of the matter is, most people are at high risk for vitamin D deficiency these days.

Early Exposure to Allergens May Reduce Allergy Risk

In addition to vitamin D deficiency, a theory of dual allergen exposure may also explain the rise in pediatric food allergies. This was the basis for the LEAP study from King’s College London, in which they evaluated how early exposure to peanuts may affect the development of a peanut allergy.21

The prevalence of peanut allergy in children has doubled in the past 10 years in countries where parents are advised to avoid exposure to peanuts during pregnancy, lactation and infancy.

The researchers randomly assigned 640 infants, 4 to 11 months old, with a history of severe eczema, egg allergy or both, to either eat or avoid peanuts until they were 60 months old. The children were assigned to groups based on preexisting sensitivity to peanut extract, determined by a skin-prick test.

Of the 98 participants treated who initially had a positive peanut allergy test, 35 percent of those who avoided peanuts had a peanut allergy at 60 months, compared to just 10 percent of those who consumed peanuts. Dr. Gideon Lack, lead investigator for the study, commented:22

“For decades allergists have been recommending that young infants avoid consuming allergenic foods such as peanut to prevent food allergies. Our findings suggest that this advice was incorrect and may have contributed to the rise in the peanut and other food allergies.”

These results have been validated in subsequent studies, finding late introduction of fish and eggs is associated with an increased risk of allergy development.23 A metadata analysis from the Imperial College London, which evaluated 146 studies with over 200,000 children, also concluded that feeding egg between the ages of 4 and 6 months may reduce the child’s risk of developing an egg allergy.24

Other Health Benefits of Vitamin D Optimization

Vitamin D deficiency has become so widespread it’s been called a pandemic by a Harvard Medical School researcher.25 The short list of health benefits attributed to vitamin D optimization include improving your immune system, strengthening muscles, bones and teeth and improving your cardiovascular health.

Over the past decades, thousands of studies have evaluated the benefits of vitamin D and have linked low levels to a host of chronic health conditions. In fact, this site was one of the leaders to help catalyze interest in vitamin D over 15 years ago.

Unfortunately, some studies claim supplementation at amounts over 4,000 IUs/day may lead to health problems. Research by GrassrootsHealth negates such concerns, showing toxicity is not an issue until you hit 30,000 IUs a day.26

What’s more, the recommended vitamin D level and dosage established by the National Academy of Medicine is actually the result of a mathematical error that has never been corrected. There is a long list of studies confirming the correlation between vitamin D status and cancer risk. Maintaining sufficient levels of vitamin D also helps to lower all-cause mortality and risk of Type 2 diabetes.

During pregnancy, optimal levels of vitamin D help to reduce the percentage of preterm birth, and subsequently higher risks of ADHD, asthma, autism and vision problems associated with early birth. Low levels of vitamin D are also associated with depression, metabolic syndrome,27 cardiovascular disease28 and lung disease.29

Maintain Healthy Levels to Help Prevent Disease

My recommendation is to get your vitamin D level tested twice a year, when your level is likely to be at its lowest (midwinter) and highest (midsummer). This is particularly important if you’re pregnant, planning a pregnancy or if you have cancer.

Research30 suggests it may require 9,600 IUs of vitamin D per day to get a majority (97.5 percent) of the population to reach 40 ng/mL, but individual requirements can vary widely. If you’ve been taking a certain amount of vitamin D3 for a number of months and retesting reveals you’re still not within the recommended range, then you know you need to increase your dosage.

Over time, with continued testing, you’ll find your individual sweet spot based on your usual safe sun exposure and have a good idea of how much supplementation you need to maintain a year-round level of 60 to 80 ng/mL, which research suggests is the ideal range for optimal health and disease prevention.

GrassrootsHealth offers vitamin D testing through its D*Action study, and has an online vitamin D calculator you can use to estimate your vitamin D3 dosage once you know your current serum level.

The Synergism Between Vitamin D3, Magnesium, Calcium and Vitamin K2

Pamela Lutsey, public health researcher at the University of Minnesota, points out excessive vitamin D may cause over absorption of calcium, which in turn may result in calcium deposits in your heart and kidneys. Indeed, it is important to maintain not only the proper balance of vitamin D and calcium, but also magnesium and vitamin K2.

Lack of balance between these four nutrients is why calcium supplements have become associated with increased risk of heart attack and stroke, and why some experience symptoms of “vitamin D toxicity.” I use quotation marks here, because the problem is not so much excess vitamin D as it is a lack of vitamin K2.

Part of the explanation for these adverse side effects is that vitamin K2 is what keeps calcium in its appropriate place. If you’re K2 deficient, added calcium can cause more problems than it solves, by accumulating in the wrong places. Similarly, taking megadoses of vitamin D supplements without sufficient amounts of K2 can lead to inappropriate calcification, which is what Lutsey is suggesting.

While the optimal ratios between vitamin D and vitamin K2 have yet to be established, Dr. Kate Rheaume-Bleue (whom I’ve interviewed on this topic) suggests for every 1,000 IUs of vitamin D you take, you may benefit from about 100 micrograms (mcg) of K2, and perhaps as much as 150 to 200 mcg.

Maintaining an appropriate calcium-to-magnesium ratio is also important, as magnesium helps keep calcium in your cells so they can function better. Historically, mankind ate a diet with a calcium-magnesium ratio of 1-to-1,31 but Americans tend to have a higher calcium-to-magnesium ratio in their diet, averaging about 3.5-to-1.

Magnesium and vitamin K2 also complement each other, as magnesium helps lower blood pressure, which is an important component of heart disease. So, anytime you’re taking magnesium, calcium or vitamin D3, remember to take all the others into consideration as well, as they all work synergistically with each other.

How to Combat Seasonal Allergies in Dogs

Watching your dog scratch and lick herself throughout spring and summer can be heartbreaking. Unfortunately, there may be no cure for some allergies in dogs. The best we can hope for is that a combination of therapies may give them some relief and reduce the incidence of secondary infections and visits to the vet. The following ideas are some of the things that have helped many of my clients over the years and my own itchy dog. I hope that in passing them on I can give your pet some relief.

A brief rundown on allergies in dogs

Before we get onto the tips, here’s a rundown on what is going on with allergies and the main causes. An allergy is basically an overreaction by the immune system to something normal in the environment. Allergies usually develop in dogs more than year of age and can be hereditary. Allergies in dogs lead to foot-licking, scratching, ear infections, hair loss, anal gland problems as well as visibly inflamed skin, often with secondary infections.

Here are the main causes of allergies in dogs:

Fleas. One flea bite can keep an allergic dog itching for two weeks! This is the most common allergy, and usually starts around the base of the tail.

Food. Any protein can lead to an allergy. Food allergies account for around seven percent of allergies in dogs, and you may need an elimination diet to diagnose them.

Contact allergies. These usually involve plants or grasses and mainly lead to irritation on the feet or hairless areas on the underside of the abdomen.

Atopy. This is usually seasonal and caused by a variety of airborne allergens. Atopy can be likened to hay fever in humans, but in dogs atopy causes itchy skin.

What causes seasonal itching?

Atopy and contact allergies are usually involved in seasonal itch. Dust mites, pollens, grasses, or any number of airborne allergens in the environment are the usual culprits. When atopic dogs are tested either by a blood test or skin patch testing, they are tested for up to 83 different allergens — another reason why the solution is not necessarily simple. Many dogs have multiple allergies, rather than just one.

Itch threshold

One of the more interesting allergy theories, this essentially means that the triggers for scratching in allergic pets can be cumulative. For those dogs who have multiple allergies (such as a food allergy and a grass allergy), control of even one of the triggers may be enough to keep them below the threshold where they become itchy. This is why a combination of therapies works very well and also why excellent flea control is incredibly important.

Even if fleas are not the primary cause of the allergy, use the fastest-acting flea product available (Comfortis) and good environmental flea control. It may also be worthwhile doing a food trial with one novel protein source and a carbohydrate for eight weeks (for example sweet potato and rabbit/kangaroo/venison).

Atopy and infection

Many of the therapies for allergic dogs focus on improving skin barrier function. Often dogs with allergies have dry, scurfy skin or greasy, smelly skin. Usually the cellular layers in the skin form nice tight junctions with a matrix of lipids and keratin to keep moisture in and bacteria and yeast out. Dogs with allergies have altered barrier function, allowing allergens to get through and leaving them prone to secondary infections. If your dog has inflamed, moist, smelly, ulcerated skin or has little scabby areas, see your vet for a course of antibiotics, as often the other strategies will not help until the infection is resolved. For very mild cases, shampoos containing chlorhexidine or miconazole can help with skin infections.

Tips and strategies for treating allergies in dogs

Try a combination of these things and hopefully your dog will get some relief:

When your dog comes in from outside, use a damp towel to wipe him down, paying particular attention to the feet. Make sure the feet are completely dry afterwards.

Use QV Bath Oil at the concentration on the bottle and allow your pet to soak in the tub for 10 minutes every three days.

Use fatty acids, ideally with the correct ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 oils. You can also use fish oils or skin diets.

Bathe your pet every three days or weekly with an oatmeal shampoo.

If your dog gets itchy feet from walking on grass, pop on some boots.

Wash any bedding, blankets, or soft toys weekly on a hot-washing cycle.

Use HEPA filters in the home and either get rid of pillows or mattresses that can’t be washed or use dust-mite-resistant covers.

If you have a garden, keep grasses short, particularly during periods of grass seeding or rapid growth.

For moldy or damp houses, use dehumidifiers; don’t let your pet in the basement and avoid indoor plants.

Use a topical steroid cream or spray for small areas such as feet.

Sometimes it is difficult to know what to do first with a newly diagnosed pet. If you haven’t already visited your vet, this is the most important first step. Make sure your flea control is up-to-date and perhaps take this list in with you to get some advice on which therapies to try first.

Also bear in mind the other options your vet can provide, such as allergy testing, immunotherapy, corticosteroids, and cyclosporine. My hope is that some of the strategies here may give your dog a little relief from his allergies and give you both a good night’s sleep.
