Vashwood rant
I can't sleep so why not analyze vashwood in the middle of the night
Now, this analysis is mostly of the manga, with maybe small takes from 98 and tristamp
To start let's look at the boys from their respective beginnings
Vash is so cruelly mischaracterized as a child, and it might be a little bit of trismaps fault, even though i do love it, or maybe people are just putting characters into boxes without really thinking about it but Vash is so not soft-shy-nice little baby brother. The whole thing with him being younger is so insane to me, i get why if Nai was born like 10 minutes earlier he would make it his whole personality (very sibling thing to do) but it's just so stupid. No, they have 0 age difference and it doesn't affect their dynamic cuz the are literally twins for the love of god. And, really, when you look at the manga as kids Nai was the emotional one! And he still is!
Nai is plagued by fear and anger and resentment and those emotions are what drive his every decision. Vash, on the other hand, is much more in control of his feelings and doesn't show them as much. That is to say that pre-tesla nai is the one worried about their relationship with humans, about their future, he's the one crying after talking to Conrad (what a sweet child he was) while Vash seemes much less scared.
And when they find out about Tesla Nai is the one who faints - he’s the more reactive one, the emotional one. And that small difference is what sets their paths so differently. Because Vash actually gets a chance to talk to Rem and figure things out.And that talk is so very important because it makes Rem, who already was everything to Vash, even more important.
Now, I want us all to think about how terrified Vash was after seeing Tesla cuz he probably thought his own mother was going to dissect him and his brother. But then she saves him when he tries to end his own life, proving that no she’s not gonna kill him, because she, as every human, has the capability to learn from her mistakes and make better choices. (too bad Nai didn’t get that lesson lol)
And then we get to the big bad things. (it’s genocide) But the important part from that whole ordeal is Rem’s sacrifice. Because, listen, I love stories where humanity is shown to be capable of change and forgiveness is a virtue and love and pussy and all that but oh man can it be so so unrealistic and a little bit insane to watch (su im looking at u (i love su but oh boy that is not how the world works unfortunately)) but Trimax manages to make it work so well. I believe that’s cuz Vash is a very kind and loving man but is also completely out of his mind and has horrendous mommy issues. At least half the reason he doesn’t kill people is because Rem has died to save them, and killing them would make it all be for nothing. If he kills these people or if he lets them die would that mean that Rem died for nothing? Did she sacrifice her life to save these people only for her own son to end their lives? AND you know I’m right cuz he literally says it in the manga but also BECAUSE HE DOES THE SAME FOR WOLFWOOD (also he did kill Nai when he had the chance but we don’t have time to unpack that)
All of that is A LOT and very complicated (i love Vash he’s so well written he’s my perfect little meow meow) now let's talk about Wolfwoooooooooood /twirls hair/
WW is much easier to understand and analyze cuz he is, just a guy,, WW is just a normal person who gets insanely unlucky and gets in THE WORST possible situations (If he ever played DND he would roll straight 1s). That is to say that his story is sort of a way to show how much life in the badlands sucks, but also that there are good things even in the worst places (the orphanage) And WW reacts to situations in the most rational way possible way - he kills to survive. he doesn’t want to but he doesn’t get a say in it. If he could chose he would just live with his family and friend and do whatever. And that, him being so normal in such a violent and bloody world is what makes him suffer all the time. His inner moral compass is screaming at him what a terrible person he is and he promptly ignores it.
That is until that moral compass manifests itself in the form of a tall, blond and handsome stranger that he’s supposed to lead to his death. The stranger who turns out to be the most compassionate and kind man WW’s has ever seen. Who he’s supposed to kill. It’s like finding an oasis in the desert and being forced to burn it to the ground. And WW doesn’t want to do that, and he refuses to believe that the oasis is not a mirage so he tries to get Vash to kill someone, even if it’s WW himself. (It doesn’t work.)
As we all know WW changes his mind because of Vash’s influence. And he dies for it. Because even though Vash’s beliefs are born of human virtues, no man is made to walk his path, for he is not human and any mortal who tries to follow an angel to the skies is doomed to crash. WHAT YOU DON’T EXPECT IS THAT THAT MAN WILL BRING THE ANGEL DOWN WITH HIM
There is this line I wrote for an art i’m planning to make and if you’ve read this far you deserve a lil spoiler - “have you found absolution in bringing an angel to his knees?” and it captures perfectly what i'm thinking. And also Vash spends so much time trying to be closer to people but I think him killing Legato might’ve been the most human thing he’s ever done. Cuz it’s is so beautiful in the way he does it for the memory of the person he loved and yet so ugly in it’s cruelty.
I’ve said this before but most of the time when there is a human/ some immortal powerful creature relationship I don’t think the human is that special but WW HE SO IS. Maybe it’s the way that he’s just as deep in the nuclear bombs with personality business as Vash is, being one of said nuclear bombs, but still remains a normal person with relatively good morals that he can anchor Vash to a sort of normality that he doesn’t get often. Like what other guy would get hunted by all sorts of freaks with you, get in trouble all the time, get shot and etc and etc and then go for a drink with you like it’s a normal wednesday? Wolfwood. Or maybe it's that WW learns of every worst part of Vash, he sees him be on the brink of losing himself, he knows Vash has actually caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and ALMOST did it again after Julai, and still stays with him? He sees Vash become something that is not human at all and still stay? Idk MAYBE IT’S ALL OF THAT but WW is just so important and so down bad but we all know that already so i’m not gonna add to that
Anyways, I got this all out of my system gn

‘Can I hold you, real close’
Vash x Reader
Tumblr media
You're just early, you don't know how many times you’ve repeated this to yourself. Your friends had convinced you to do this, the guy was nice enough the first time you met him so you didn't understand why this time was different. Feeling like a fool after getting all dressed, and waiting at the bar for over 30 minutes. Tired of the looks of pity you’ve been receiving, you finish your drink and set the glass on the bar, and stand with a sigh. Well looks like you’d be going home and spending the night alone.
“Sorry, I’m late!” You're grabbed by the arm suddenly and forced back into your seat. The man is still holding your arm, meeting his gaze your eyes widen. He's giving you a sheepish smile, the people around you look away, and you even see the bartender give out a breath of relief. Ugh, why did other people have to be so invested in other people's lives?
Gaze going back to the blonde, he lets go of your arm and orders two drinks. This man is not your date, he slides the glass towards you which you catch on the bar. Raising a brow at him confused, he looks nervous. “Sorry… I don't mean to bother you it's just you were here when I came in and I was leaving and you're still sitting by yourself.” You scoff as he rambles on and on, his voice trailing off at the sound, so he had noticed you sitting here alone all this time? You noticed he had stopped talking, he was looking at you kindly, but you were still upset.
“Sorry it's just… thank you but I don't need anyone's pity,” you say with a wave of your hand, your other hand gripping the glass of your drink. You feel embarrassed, and oh god you're going to cry. One sniffle has the man panicking beside you, “Please don't cry! I'm really not pitying you” he looks like he's going to cry himself. What a strange guy, you wipe your eyes. Looking into his eyes he seems very genuine, well you’ve got all dressed up and you're here, you might as well not waste the time.
“Thanks…your sweet” and you mean it, he smiles at you with a soft blush and it's very cute, you notice he has a bit of a dimple. You introduce yourself to him, extending your hand while you do. You notice his grip is strong but not uncomfortable while he gives you, his name. Vash doesn’t let go of your hand, and you notice his eyes light up as the music changes into a more upbeat song. “Do you want to dance?”
Feeling shy all of sudden, but then thinking what do you have to lose you nod. Vash pulls you to your feet and you stumble into his chest he catches you easily and you laugh nervously. Once you find your footing, he leads you to the dance floor.
Letting him lead, you grip his hands in yours nervously as he begins to move. At first, he moves slowly it doesn’t match the tone of the song but you can tell he’s trying to ease you into the dance. Vash pulls you in close and your face flushes at the contact, he really is handsome up close.
Once the two of you find a comfortable groove, Vash picks up the pace moving faster, you laugh trying to keep up. He spins you Vash pulls you, in your back hitting his chest and you can’t help the laugh that comes out, he’s laughing too.
He twirls you back around so you're facing each other, Vash places his hands on your waist and smiles gently at you. “Place your hands around my neck and hold on.” Confused, you do what he asks, letting out a startled yelp when he lifts you by the waist and spins you.
Your arms tighten around him, and you laugh loudly you can hear him laughing as well. Your glad you didn’t leave earlier. While you are still embarrassed that your date stood you up, you are having such a good time with Vash.
He puts you down, you don't stick the landing and fall him, he catches you his arms still around your waist as you glance up at him shyly. The two of you are nearly face to face like this, him holding you close and you pressing yourself to him. Your eyes flicker from his eyes to his lips, and you flush when you notice him do the same. You lean in, but before you can connect your lips to him another couple bumps into you breaking the moment.
Pulling back from Vash, heart racing, he gives you a kind smile. He takes you by the arm to lead you back to the bar, where the two of you spend the evening talking and getting to know each other.
You don't know how much time passes, but it's getting late. “I should probably go.” You say, even though you really don’t want to, you smile when he pouts at you. “Can I walk you home?” He asks, normally you would say no, but with Vash, it’s different you can tell he doesn’t have any Ill intentions. So, you agree and the two of you leave the bar.
He offers you his arm, and well you can’t refuse that sweet face. Taking his arm, the two of you walk side by side making light conversation. Eventually, the two of you make it to your home you stop, turning to Vash. “Thank you, honestly you made my whole night so much better.” He blushes a hand rubbing the back of his neck.
“No problem such a beautiful person shouldn’t be sitting all alone looking so sad.” He stutters it out, he's not very confident in himself, but you find it endearing. You smile, face and heart feeling warm. He really is sweet; you cup his face and lean in placing a gentle kiss on the corner of his mouth. When you pull back you laugh lightly at how red his face is, Vash cups your face, and he stares into your eyes waiting for you to pull away. You don’t, leaning in he meets you halfway.
The kiss is chaste, but it’s perfect. Vash leans back first his thumb brushing the top of your cheek, before letting go of your face. “Can I see you again?” His voice is shy, you grab both of his hands holding them in your own. “I would like nothing more.” And you mean it, your gaze softens as his whole face lights up. The two of you share another gentle kiss, before parting ways.
You still feel giddy about the whole night, as you change and get ready for bed. You hope you do see Vash again and soon. Sleep comes easy to you, your dreams are light and peaceful, filled with warm laughter and gentle touches.

Trimax Thoughts Vol. 12 Pt. 3
Tumblr media
[ID: A panel from Trigun Maximum Volume 12. Knives is shown with eyes narrowed and a slight smile as he asks "What's your name?" End ID.]
"What's your name?" A name is an identifier, and to ask for it is to acknowledge an individual's identity.
We see this with Vash and his strong memory for the names of all the people from his Home. But interestingly, even with this memory for individuals, and the way Vash clearly never forgets a single person who has impacted him, he very rarely calls people by name, and this goes doubly the closer he is to them. Meryl and Milly are just "the insurance girls" most of the time. Wolfwood was referred to by Nicholas only once (though to be fair, this may just be typical use of a surname). I need to go back and check when I have more energy but I'm pretty sure the only name Vash uses with any regularity is Rem's. Vash loves them, but he won't stick around, nor will he use their names. Maybe if he doesn't use them... he can avoid getting too attached. (Mission failed...)
But it's more than that. Vash's guilt and desire to keep people safe prevents attachment that's true... but so does his philosophy. By necessity, Vash has to refuse to prioritize anyone's life over another's. Getting attached, becoming close enough to want to do anything to protect that person... Vash can't have that, because Vash knows himself well. He is far from impartial. We all remember his "diablo" moment at the beginning of the manga, and his outright murderous anger towards Knives over Rem and July - and that's still with him distanced. Here's his reactions to Wolfwood being in danger in Volume 10, after Vash realized both how much he meant to him and that he was dying:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Two screenshots from Trigun Maximum Volume 10. In the first, Vash's face is shadowed before he whirls around to show his eyes - wide and pale and furious. His face is shaded with dark lines for dramatic emphasis. In the second, Vash shoves two men onto the ground by the barrels of his two guns. He is hunched over them, again, furious. His face is shadowed completely. End ID.]
To love someone in a personal way is to prioritize them. It is that prioritization that could lead someone to kill another. Vash cannot have that, yet another reason why he self-imposes that distance from people.
You can't be impartial about others' lives... if some are more important to you than others.
Knives meanwhile uses Legato's name a lot! Legato, or Bluesummers, but either way, he is using his name. And I really think that Knives cares (?) in some way for Legato. He asked Elendira for Legato to be brought back instead of killed. Kind of just lets Legato do what he wants (except kill Vash, obviously). He entrusts him to keep hold of Vash for months on end. Legato doesn't have a number like the rest of Knives' followers; just a name!!! I feel certain that Knives used to share a lot more with Legato before Fifth Moon - Legato seems shocked that Knives would withhold info from him, and he knew Rem's name! There was clearly some point of understanding between them at the moment of their meeting. At the very least, Knives appreciates Legato far more than he lets on.
...And he will never let on. Knives treats Legato cruelly... probably because if he were to treat him on fairer terms, it would be a compromise to his principle that "all humans are bad and need to die", that the time for communication is over, that there is no "making friends" anymore. Knives cannot treat Legato with respect.
You can't push the narrative that an entire group is irredeemable and beneath you... if you've grown attached to one of them.
Knives uses names but treats the people as inferior. Vash treats people with respect but rarely uses names and distances himself. Both of them are severely hampered by their strict ideologies that they will not waver from - which guarantees their loneliness will never end.
Vash is doomed to lose everyone he cares for without ever giving himself the chance to love them, or them to love him. Knives is doomed to lose all his connections, past or possible future, and exist as an eternal lonely child who will never make all those friends he once craved. All because neither of them can afford to back down.
And now they really are gearing up to lose each other, for good this time. Both of them, doomed to lose, right from the start.
There are really no victors in a fight like this.

Even though Wolfwood is very much not an actual Catholic priest, I do find it compelling that Vash--someone without any religious beliefs and minimal exposure to "Christianity," courtesy of Rem (OG Trigun)--is the most faithful of the two.
And by "faithful," I don't mean so much in a religious or Christian sort of sense. More that Vash holds onto his faith that there is good in people and that everyone is worth saving. That the taking of a life is something so unspeakable to him that it will literally cause him immense mental, emotional and physical pain when he is forced to do so. His unshakeable belief, i.e. his faith that every life is precious and no one is beyond redepmtion irregardless of how morally corrupt an individual may be is so foundational to who he is as a character.
While I've only really experienced this through anime and various other Japanese based video games, I do enjoy seeing depictions of Christian iconography and concepts form non-Western creators. I love the art and memes of Vash being a "biblically accurate angel" (even though Plants aren't angels, I am so fucking happy that people are picking up on the unintentional symbolism) and I do enjoy the amount of, again, art and memes of Wolfwood being a cringefail Catholic priest.
But I also love the non-Western depiction of Christianity in Trigun, or rather the apocalyptic remnants of it. Despite the fact I have lost my ability to have faith in a higher being (and my own personal beef/distate with the Catholic Church/conservative Christianity as a whole), I find the worldbuilding of Trigun fascinating in this aspect as it provides its audience an alternative form of a global religion that's very relevant to our daily lives.
In Trigun, Christianity is very much a shadow of its former self, a leftover remnant of humanity--more specifically, a remnant of an old forgotten belief system--that has been essentialy been lost. Save for a few remaining Bibles and some memories of particular Catholic iconography/symbolism.
But overall, that's all that remains. Just familiar symbols and various rituals that some people are able to recall from their former lives.
So the decision to pair Vash up with someone like Wolfwood, someone who has lost his faith in humanity as a whole but has resolved himself to protect those that he can (or rather, deems worthy of saving) ... I find that relationship absolutely fascinating. Because I'd argue that in most Western depictions of a holy man (typically Christian and typically Catholic, let's be real), it's usually the holy man that is doing the saving. Or at the very least, is usually helping guide the other characters on their own paths towards redemption.
Despite the fact Wolfwood isn't an actual priest but instead an assassin trained by a mercenary group using the guise of an old religion (again, that most of humanity has clearly forgotten about), I find it to be a wonderful storywriting choice to make Vash the "holy man."
They're both incredibly tragic characters that burden themselves with crippling destinies. Destinies that ultimately lead to their own destruction, but hopefully all for the greater good. Vash holds faith that maybe, just maybe, he can make Nai realize the error of his ways and turn over a new leaf.
Understandably, Wolfwood finds this way of thinking horribly childish and naive. He even takes it as a personal insult when Vash continues to insist that killing people, even if it's for the sake of protecting someone else, is wrong.
But Vash isn't wrong for wanting to see the good in people. To borrow a quote from Everything Everywhere All At Once: "You tell me it's a cruel world, and we're all running around in circles. I know that. I've been on this earth just as many days as you. When I choose to see the good side of things, I'm not being naive. It is strategic and necessary. It's how I've learned to survive through everything. I know you see yourself as a fighter. Well, I see myself as one too. This is how I fight."
Granted, Vash doesn't express his beliefs as eloquently as this. But that doesn't really matter, though. Because Wolfwood doesn't need Vash to make express himself this way for Wolfwood to finally understand him. Vash, by the simple of virtue of being himself, is a good person who chooses to see the good in others.
And Wolfwood ... Wolfwood is someone who chooses to see the bad.
Wolfwood cannot quite bring himself to view the world the way Vash does. And Vash will never be able to share Wolfwood's opinions regarding who is worthy of living, either. But they respect each other and understand where the other person is coming from.
It does take Wolfwood a lot longer to understand Vash as a person, let alone his faith in humanity. But when he does, it's so satisfying to watch Vash become someone important to him. Someone that he wants to protects. Because if Vash won't defend himself, Wolfwood resolves to be the one to protect Vash.
Even if Vash doesn't really want that.
It's so fucking amazing to see these two clash over their ideals, whether it's in the form of playful teasing or straight up beating the shit out of each other. But they stay together and hold each other in such high regard despite their conflicting beliefs.
To me, one of the most beautiful aspescts of Trigun is that Wolfwood--a man of faith but only in name--gets to have such a close connection with Vash--a man of faith through and through--and that because of their relationship, they both inspire a existential AND spiritual crisis within one another.
Because in a world that makes no sense, they both find faith in each other. And if that isn't the most beautiful shit you've ever seen, then I don't know what is.

Apologies for yet another nonsensical insomnia rant but the fact that Legato Bluesummers a) has never truly been a free man and b) cannot fathom ever living outside of servitude. really hurts man. Like ohhhhhh boy.
In the ‘98 anime (due to trimax being incomplete at the time), we never really got to see the real dark and nasty bits of Legato’s story, and trigun stampede hasn’t yet gotten a chance to really delve into his character. While Legato still served the same purpose as he did in the manga with similar events playing out, I think a lot of his character’s depth was missing in tri98—we never really learn why it is that Legato is so deeply devoted to Knives, and he’s portrayed as a lot more… theatrical?? than he is in the manga?? anyway. Tri98 Legato serves his narrative purpose and is a great villain, but he seems a bit shallow, for lack of a better word, mostly because we don’t actually get to learn a lot about him.
In comparison to his counterparts, trimax Legato is… kinda a loser. The second we meet Knives, Legato gets crumpled like a soda can and spends the majority of the series as a quadriplegic who sits menacingly in the shadows in his body brace/coffin thing (which I affectionately like to call his Bitch Cocoon). He spends his time being very weird and unlikeable and tormenting Vash in various ways, all while dramatically singing Knives’s praises, despite him being the guy who quite literally rearranged all of Legato’s limbs and permanently crippled him. All in all, despite being an absolute menace in combat and just a generally fucking unsettling guy, Legato’s kind of pathetic and really easy to dunk on at first. Just ask Elendira, who roasts the shit out of him on a daily basis because she’s bored and even “accidentally” chucks a glass of water at him! He’s an easy target!
However, I think this makes the absolute gut punch that is finding out why Legato is the way he is infinitely worse, which I absolutely adore from a narrative and storytelling standpoint.
Legato has been a slave since he was a child, in every way but name—well, he was literally a slave as a child, and more specifically, a sex slave. He grew up knowing nothing other than the absolute worst of humanity, instilling a hatred towards his own kind that would last his entire life. It’s made abundantly clear that Legato doesn’t value himself in the slightest, because he grew up as little more than a commodity, to use and dispose. When Knives razes the city Legato’s being held captive in, and goes to kill him, this is the first act of kindness he has ever received, and yet also the greatest unkindness—Knives has destroyed Legato’s life, no matter how abhorrently shitty it was. Legato has never lived a life outside slavery, so he has no idea what to do with himself.
So he turns to Knives. Millions Knives, whose goal is to eradicate the humans who have done nothing but make Legato suffer. Knives, who seems all too willing to put him out of his misery should he turn down Legato’s offer to serve him.
Legato cannot fathom a life without a master, without pain and suffering and servitude. He cannot comprehend the idea of freedom, and most of all, he can’t understand Vash. He can’t understand that someone whose kind has been used and abused by humans for centuries, who’s suffered for decades alone in the desert, could find it in himself to forgive and love the ones who hurt him so unconditionally. Vash’s very existence infuriates Legato, because Vash is a mirror image of him—a mirror image whose trauma didn’t swallow him whole and turn him into something despicable. Sure, Knives might’ve saved him, but he’s just another master to serve. Knives broke every bone in his body as punishment for disobedience, and yet somehow, Knives still favors his brother—who keeps running, who keeps refusing, who keeps avoiding his past—over Legato, who’s sworn to never disobey his orders again.
Vash is what Legato could’ve been. Vash is what Legato desperately wants to be. The problem is, Legato refuses to heal, and he doesn’t want to be fixed, either.

How do you think redeeming Knives went after the ‘98 ending? Not sure how Vash would reign in him
Welcome to the plot of countless fanfics exploring that very same question since the turn of the millennium!! 8'D
Understandable, since the 98 anime's ending was left deliberately open-ended (its plot way different from the manga too, since it hadn't been completed yet), with every other major character dead save for the brothers and Meryl & Milly, it's heavily implied Vash returned home - to the girls, as he was trusted to, while carrying the incapacitated Knives over his shoulder (while leaving all his/their guns and red coat behind, since those items were symbolically no longer needed anymore) rather than leaving on a one-way suicide mission where he & Knives would end up killing each other. No, Vash made the independent decision to survive and properly 'take care' of Knives the way their mother Rem wished for them -to live- upon her sacrificial goodbye. After Vash finally realizes/interprets what she meant after going through some huge life-changing revelations himself (especially from Meryl's successful non-violent demonstration in saving him, proving to him that Rem's belief, and having faith in humanity, actually works after suffering thru so many repeated failures where it didn't), it's important he chooses not to die, or kill, or abandon or give up on even his own brother as a lost cause too. :') So I think it's appropriate he perseveres in saving Knives too (with Vash essentially taking responsibility as the 'older' brother now), while holding firm onto the belief of a hopeful 'blank ticket' open future...even for those like himself, who've terribly wronged. After all, survival, recovery, and kindness are a choice. And definitely not easy. Especially on their harsh, unforgiving desert planet. But at least 98 Knives is alive to recover enough that he gets that choice of a future too.
And so...your guess is as good as mine as to what's implied post-canon when we get official art like this! (As amusingly noted: Knives gets his second chance forced into family group therapy as the petulant 'younger' brother now~) Where I definitely think it would take a group effort, and not just from Vash himself, to reform Knives with the right kind of therapy needed (both physical and emotional, since yup Vash basically shot thru all his limbs and Knives himself still has unaddressed childhood trauma from the SEEDS' ship to consider - note, cause the Tesla medical abuse incident never happened in the 98 canon to mentally scar him for life, BUT it's implied child Knives directly suffered some form of physical abuse from the prejudiced bad apples on their ship's crew behind closed doors that not even Vash knew about, so yeah.)
I've seen fics where it's absolutely not smooth sailing (for example, on the common premise where Vash has no clue or plan on how to deal with bringing Knives home--cold turkey style, to the girls), where Knives continues to be a dangerous threat and menace - especially towards the girls, even while physically incapacitated - since he still has mental powers of telepathy and manipulative coercion/brainwashing, etc etc (available fic Plant powers may vary - BUT since 98 Legato had Vash's grafted-on lost arm and used those--Vash's powers for evil, it's implied Vash has all those same powers too, the same or even greater than Knives, he's just untrained and/or chooses not to use them on people Like That. The interesting potential being that...Vash could. This is why structurally, 98 Legato works well as Vash's foil, and is arguably more of the 'main villain' than 98 Knives was, and also why Vash killing Legato, and therefore part of himself in the process, has some interesting layers/nuances to it that even the Trimax manga didn't have, since the lore was completely different. But anyway I'm going off-tangent...)
So overcoming Knives' fear/hatred/disgust towards humanity is one of the biggest hurdles to address. Again this where I often see the girls come in, especially the continued exposure and positive reinforcement from Milly's grace, often while he's still recovering and bedridden from his injuries fighting Vash, to slowly help 'restore his faith in humanity' kinda deal. I've even seen the fic idea where Milly raising her -speculated- child from Wolfwood gives Knives a whole new closeup perspective on human life he never got before. (Bottom line, I understand why all the post-canon Milly-Knives fics seemed to be popular back then.) But I think the creative ideas I find particularly interesting are the ones that capitalize on the telepathic link between Vash & Knives - where Knives can pick up on the thoughts/feelings Vash happens to broadcast while interacting with say...Meryl ;) to Knives' shock/confusion! that by proxy affect Knives' curiosity towards humans like her. Cause if he can sense how his brother can feel something like that towards them, different from how it ever was with Rem, then wtf is up with that?! Aha, many fun shenanigans can ensue with that!
Even better is when I see fics delve into some of Knives' deeper issues, like his broken levels of trust and feelings of betrayal, loneliness and abandonment he possibly fears even from Vash (after all, Rem 'chose' humanity over them, and Vash left him to 'choose' humanity over him too - having those kinds of doubts to come clean about.) There's some good stuff to explore there, on the topic of normal dysfunctional/estranged brothers trying to reconcile and reconnect as family again, and I'm sure there are plenty of 98 Knives-centric fics focusing on his redemption that I haven't even seen yet (the ones I ended up not liking are those that flip or roleswap to give Vash the short end of the stick, ie they redeem and give Knives all the happiness at the expense of Vash; now that's just unfair!) It's just...searching on the older sites like ff.net for that kinda stuff is difficult to know what you're getting into without appropriate tagging, so heck, even I'd be up for hidden recs people have found on the topic!

trimax vol 14 random thoughts (ch 5-8)
okay enough stalling... let's get this done... HOO BOY
chapter 5:
Tumblr media
i love how vash is drawn in these panels... and vash waking up from hearing meryl's words... WAAHHHHH...
Tumblr media
GET UP COWARD (<- lyric from my chemical romance's 2022 single 'the foundations of decay' which i may or may not be considering for a vash playlist)
Tumblr media
oh, i LOVE this image of knives covering his face...
hmhmhm... the way knives addresses the other plants is... gentle, almost?
"sorrow and grief," huh... over the humans trying to communicate with them? those are the kinds of emotions this scenario is bringing out? there is something there but... i don't quite know what it is...
Tumblr media
uwahhh... i do love this image...
"we were united in hatred" -> "i feel a murmur of fear"... hmmm. sounds like knives himself, who buried his fear underneath hatred... am i connecting any dots???
but fear in communicating with humans... fear because communication is scary in general? fear because of the abuse humans have put plants through? fear of uncertainty of what this communication will result in?
Tumblr media
the tiniest merylmilly u can imagine...
they ask if it's safe, but it's not like vash cares if it's safe, he's been prepared to die for several volumes now, so... he's probably thinking "if i die i die," lol. (<- in pain)
Tumblr media
this is a cute expression...
Tumblr media
"don't touch me," he says...
knives trying to incorporate himself with the fused plants - now it's HIS turn to go "if i die i die" i guess LJSDKLFDS... both him and vash risking it all for their ideals. they really are brothers...
vash's "grant me that ticket"... it doesn't directly address god, but it feels like a prayer nonetheless.
chapter 6:
Tumblr media
wah... meryl's strength gives vash strength... wahhh... is this the first time they've... well, "talked about it" isn't the right phrase, but is this the first time vash understands what meryl was going through that time when she flinched away from him?
"what matters is that you communicate. that you understand the person next to you is breathing and existing." ugh, fuck, i can feel myself getting weepy again.
the people getting good AND bad memories from the plants.. good! good! they said a few volumes ago that most(?) of the population has gathered in this city, so this really is everyone?! individual normal people couldn't do much about plant abuse, but now that EVERYONE understands, things can change! they can acknowledge what's happened, and they can change, and move forward!!
and vash being the bridge, the point of commonality between humans and plants... uaaghgh it's so interesting because for a long time vash's reputation among the humans was one of destruction. but in this moment everyone understands who he really is and what he wants. ueueeueueue....
also. this pattern of receiving traumatic memories via feathers, and to come out the other side not with fear and hatred but with increased compassion and understanding... sounds like what happened between vash and meryl, doesn't it?
Tumblr media
"i've never made a promise like this before, but today i'd like to try" UAAGHGHHG.G U AHGHGHGHG.
Tumblr media
haha. hey. why does it look like he's been crying. i'm going to throw up.
i don't know if the rest of this post will be comprehensible.
chapter 7:
what do i even say here.
Tumblr media
hey remember the chapter title "king of loneliness." i'm gonna go eat rocks now.
Tumblr media
even now, he's stubbornly clinging to his ideals, thinking he's in too deep, that he's gone too far to turn back...
Tumblr media
oh, this is getting to me, the way it's worded. "caught up in something too big" and the panel of them as kids. they were just kids when this all started. this was too big for them. knives was a kid, a traumatized, scared kid who made a very bad, very destructive decision, and he has lived his life up until this point digging his heels in, growing more and more twisted, more controlling and violent, trying to justify his own actions to himself because how do you carry something like that.
"kill me, vash, there's nowhere else for me to go." literally two chapters ago vash said "where am i going? what's there left to see?" i'm fucking eating rocks.
"even though we were apart for so long, we were still brothers. but i was the one who broke away..." knives looks so pained when he thinks this. now, after all this, he's finally feeling regret, or letting himself feel regret. in the last possible moment.
...or so he thinks. vash has a clear shot, the opportunity to kill knives, and knives wants vash to kill him, he expects it - but vash protects him instead. with his last bullet. despite knives's blade going through his torso. despite everything. despite EVERYTHING!!!!! vash has EVERY REASON to hate knives, to KILL knives, and he STILL chooses not to!!!! i'm not okay i'm crying again
Tumblr media
in 98, rem tells vash "take care of knives"... this is pretty much the same thing... i don't want to say this is necessarily another thing nightow took from 98 because of course this is what she said, what else would she have said at that time?
the beginning of the chapter had vash struggling to remember what rem said, but the preceding pages imply it's knives remembering her words... or maybe they both are...
this is fucking getting to me, fuck, i'm crying again!!! fuck!!!!
also, oh, chronica IS still alive... honestly i was (and still am) so caught up in the twins that that information just immediately left my brain the first time around LMAO...
Tumblr media
i am so. fucking. unwell. about knives's expressions in this scene. he's feeling so many things at once. i just... the fact that vash protects knives and picks him up to haul him away... he ISN'T leaving knives on his own, even in the end, even after everything that's happened... and knives is just. what IS he feeling? shock, disbelief, regret... love, can i say love?? love for his brother?? the love between them that never went away, despite everything?? i am gonna fucking throw up
i don't know where to put this in the post because it occurred to me while i was proofreading, but knives stabbed vash, felt shock and regret, and then acted to save him... which sounds awfully similar to what happened between rem and vash, huh?
this, with knives's hair turning black... new hair, new outlook, right?
Tumblr media
will you drive me back, can you take me home... (<- lyrics from gerard way's 'brother' from his 2014 solo album 'hesitant alien')
oh, the fact that they sprouted wings like this in the stampede s1 finale is gonna make it hit SOOOO MUCH HARDER once THIS scene gets adapted. this is such a beautiful spread, a beautiful moment... i'm gonna cry again...
Tumblr media
LIVIO!!!! TO THE RESCUE!!!! also... that's not a double fang, whose gun is that?
Tumblr media
WOLFWOOD!!!!! WWWAHHHHGHGHGHH!!!!! the "turn around and he's gone" scene is SUCH a cliche but FUCK!!!!!! IT'S GETTING TO ME!!!!!!
chapter 8:
i feel so normal i feel so normal (affirmations) (lying)
Tumblr media
i can't. i can't type. i'm crying too much. this is love. it's just love.
Tumblr media
his last act, knowing that it will kill him, is an act of love. love for his brother. so vash can eat. so the doctor and his kid can eat. and as time goes on it'll grow bigger and be able to feed more people. food as a love language. i'm crying and sobbing.
knives understands he has no place in this world, especially after everything he's done, and the world needs vash more than him... that vash can't live in the world as long as they're together... he doesn't even tell vash himself that he intended to disappear... it's his choice, he walks his path with pride... but i'd like to believe they were able to spend some time together before this. just being brothers. TALKING. eating together. sleeping next to each other. hugging?? apologizing?? knives finally being a good brother after so long and taking care of vash?? making up for lost time. i'd like to imagine it. let me imagine it.
i've been thinking this for a while but i actually do think that vash would forgive knives if knives expressed regret and asked for forgiveness. because vash is jesus and all, and that's how sin and forgiveness work in christianity, if you believe and repent you will be forgiven, etc... i don't know if vash would forgive knives right away - he is very, very human after all - but i definitely think he could. and maybe he did. maybe they had that talk.
phew. okay, i'm finished crying now, and BOY was it a big cry. not any easier the second time around. anyway.
Tumblr media
does he really need a wig? if he doesn't spike up his hair, that would be effective by itself, since it's one of his identifiers according to the earth forces...
DOES THIS CONFIRM THAT VASH CAN'T GROW A BEARD WITHOUT EFFORT? like since his plant powers are completely drained he can no longer grow a beard???
Tumblr media
AHHHH... VASH'S BIG SMILE!!!!! and everyone's wearing their old clothes, and with a bunch of guys comically chasing vash around, yeah, this is really all for callback's sake... we've come so far, and full circle.
meryl's lecture to him is so typically meryl LOL... he DID NOT keep his promise LMAO
Tumblr media
the fucking jojo sound effects are cracking me up HDSFKSFJDFS
also everyone who complained about stampede """changing""" meryl into a reporter owes me $100 right fucking now. that was a complaint i saw SO MUCH. i thought it was a bit strange myself, but i figured orange had a reason, and now i know. those complainers know NOTHING!!! NOTHING!!!!!!
Tumblr media
meryl frantically reading from her script and milly's big smile... cute... also WHAT DO YOU MEAN WARDROBE MALFUNCTIONS LMAO?? are they planning on stripping him?? vash the stampede nip slip???
Tumblr media
AAHHHHH LIVIO GREW HIS HAIR OUT AGAIN!!!!! and he's at wolfwood's grave... oh fuck i said i was done crying GODDAMMIT!!!!
okay. okay i'm done for real now. man. man. what do i say. what can i say.
"the same song of humanity still sang." and what a beautiful song it is.
Tumblr media
i don't really know how to conclude this post... just. wow. what a journey this was. i don't think i've ever cried this much over a manga, lol... i... had a really good time!

Till I See You Again
Possible Reader x Nai Millions Knives.
Trigun Stampede into Trimax
Warnings: This itself is Gender Neutral Reader, Isekai alternate to another Isekai Idea I have where Zazie takes Reader to Nai instead of letting them go. Hints of Yandere Nai, Reader Sings. Tesla research, angst over Morals. If I forget something please let me know. I do intend to build on this more. Reader has experiments done on them , reader has no reason to sing this song, they just do.
Song used: Till I See You Again by Unsecret
943 words Chapter excerpt:
“Why am I a stranger, Lost in the Familiar….will I ever know~”
It’s not like you had much to do. It’s not your fault you got Isekaied into Trigun. Why couldn’t you have fall into Vash’s arms? No you had to fall into the world literally, being caught by a whirlwind of Worms.
Other than the blood tests among other things Conrad had performed upon you. As there had to be a Scientific reason why you were dropped into the world from a world long gone. Something was wrong with your blood work however, you wouldn’t be considered a Viable option as a ideal human, an attempt to perfect the Human race so that they could live independently of Plants all together.
“Running with my eyes closed, hunted by the shadows will they ever go?”
Due to your knowledge you were too valuable to let go. No they needed you locked up, well to an extent. You were free to roam the Ship. As long as you stayed out of the way there was no need to impose most things.
You were in the area where they had collected Surviving books from the Great Fall. You would call it a Library. You gazed through book after book Piecing together how things were the way they were, what happened to earth as a whole.
“I’m afraid...that I’m miles away from yesterday and I’m alone…”
As you sung to yourself in a slow, soft, and haunting way. You would have never thought that there were anyone else around. Seeing picture of Earth, the continents. Historical events leading up to it’s collapse. It really made you wonder...did you actually watch an anime, or were you thrust into the future somehow?
But how….was that possible? How was any of this possible?
“Can’t you see I’m right here? Locked inside the Nightmare...Like a memory?”
You would move on from subject to subject. Eventually you landed on the books on Plants. But...it wasn’t just Plants. But Independent Plants in general. Then...you found documents on Tesla…you really didn’t think you were supposed to find those. The tests they did on her...you couldn’t help but cry at that. Because, of course Humans would destroy another being to attempt to understand them...They stored her dissected body parts separately...but why?
“Whispers in the silence, madness in disguises...like an enemy.~”
You felt sick. Closing the book, disgusted. The more you read, the more you understood Nai, where he came from. His thought processes.
But no. You couldn’t let yourself think like that. There HAD to be some good in Humanity. Vash was out there trying to prove it. Granted you haven’t met Vash. But you knew him from the shows, from the Manga...well maybe known was a loose term…like Vash...you just had to believe there was some good in Humanity...Not quite because Rem sacrificed herself to. It...was hard to explain...
“it’s a cold and lonely road but I’m gonna hold on…..Till I see you again~”
You didn’t place the books back, instead you walked off, heading back to your quarters. A room Similar to what Vash was in when he was taken in after The Fall. You were distracted, that you didn’t even notice that you passed up Nai on the way out.
Nai himself was distracted. His eyes narrowed and followed your form. For one so painfully ordinary, your voice was haunting and beautiful when he heard it. It wasn’t a voice or a Melody he expected to ever have come out of your mouth.
Slowly he walked over to look at the books you were looking at. Old books on Earth were to be expected? Plants were probable. He froze at Tesla’s experiments and documents. Other than the obvious as to why they were there, his eyes narrowed. He saw water droplets beside the papers.
Hesitantly, he reached down, touching the droplets, and he raised it up to his nose. Salt...tears? You would cry for his Sister?
Why was he drawn to you? A Mere human?
It’s a cold and lonely road but I gotta hold on...Till I see you again~
Your voice, it echoed in his head. Who exactly did you want to see again? A lover back on Old Earth? Well you had to get over that. You were most likely never going to see Earth ever again. Not that Nai would let you go.
What makes you want to hang onto whatever it was you were holding onto? Why were you stubborn like his brother. Even going as far as trying to escape the ship under his watch. Why? You weren’t a stupid Human, you had remnants of intelligence. You knew this planet wasn’t Earth. There were two suns, it was hotter than the climate back on Earth. You would get sick, heat stroke, heat exhaustion, hyperthermia, among other things. You weren’t meant for this planet.
If anything you should be grateful he’s protecting you from this.
Till I see you again~
Your voice echoed as an ear worm. Nai frowned, as he moved deciding to do the one thing he could do and control at this present time. He walked until his bare feet took him to his organ. Sitting down, his fingers flew against the keys gracefully.
Closing his eyes his fingers played the notes before he could even think of what he was doing.
But with your voice in his head, singing the song you did earlier, he was playing the organ along with your voice playing on repeat in his head.
However something was missing...Oh, the musical notes he played were perfect. Everything Nai did was perfect. But still something was missing
He needed you.

Hey howdy hey!
I see you are starting to write fics for trigun! I just started watching the newer anime and a bit of the old as well and it’s great! Vash is my favorite! He’s adorable!
I was wondering if you would do headcanons on what he would look for in a partner or s/o? Not body wise cuz I don’t think he would just anyone on that, but maybe personality wise? Would they be bubbly and goofy or dark and mysterious? Can totally be bender neutral for everyone to enjoy! And if you wanna do both New Vash and OG Vash that’s fine too! I’m ok with whichever or both 😊😊
If that’s not something you feel comfortable doing that’s totally fine and I completely understand! Thank you very much and I really enjoy your fics so far! I hope you continue to do more!!
I see your og Vash vs new Vash and raise you the additional Manga Vash.
MaxVash- Manga Vash
AniVash- ogAnime Vash
StamVash- Tristamp Vash
***For those reading in the future, this is written 3 sub episodes into Tristamp. If anything is inaccurate, it's cuz I haven't seen it yet. No one has. I can't wait to get to know him though.
**Technically spoilers for the manga. Not end fight stuff, but like, final wrap up chapter stuff.
What Vash looks for in an s/o
Overall, Kindness has to be the #1 thing in all 3 Vash's books. His s/o must be kind to everything and everyone wherever possible. Children, Elderly, adults, and even animals all deserve the same respect in his eyes. As much as he would prefer them to be a pacifist like himself, as long as you're not like, straight up murdering in front of him (spiders or otherwise), he should be fine. a kill in the past, or previously working as a bounty hunter or assassin etc, is forgiven, "just no more killing okay?"
All 3 have to quintuple check that you're 1,000% okay with living a life where you can never ever settle down. You'll always be on the run, never staying in one place, and unable to make many real friends. You'll essentially only have each other. So many people have turned against these boys, and they want to know you completely understand what this life will be giving you.
General personality isn't necessarily a barrier to him. He can get along with basically anyone. They obviously have to treat him kindly, be respectful, and be able to handle his goofy antics in stride. From playing with the neighborhood kids, to partying at the local bar, they gotta keep up. They don't have to participate, but knowing that that's where Vash spends a lot of his time without being upset about it is important.
They also have to be able to handle the trauma these boys have stuffed in them. Not to be his therapist, but let him cry about the shit in his past, losing his friends, etc and then never bring it up unless he asks.
I think AniVash would enjoy the contrast of someone scruffy, rough, and a little edgy, because they can keep him grounded, and see angles he can't. He's very stubborn, so sometimes someone who can knock him out of his rooted ways of thinking would be relatively healthy for him.
StamVash, however, would prefer someone bubbly and big into self care, because he kind of seems stuck in his own pity party, and needs someone to pull him out. He needs to see the good that he's done where he has so far.
MaxVash would want someone to hold him and unapologetically wants someone to take care of him. By the end of the Manga, He's so tired, even though he can't show it. He's been searching for his brother, he has used up all of his power, and he's at the end of his life. He's been fighting for so long, and even after he's essentially saved the planet, he still has a gigantic bounty in his head.
Bounty hunters and the Space military are still after him for what happened at the end of the manga. Even the Insurance girls- I'm sorry, Reporter girls are after him to get the scoop for their TV series! He just wants to sleep. He's tired of being on the run because he has to, and he wants someone to take care of him now.
In reality though, MaxVash would never really admit to that. He also wants to show you off to his friends. The group of you Him, Milly, Meryl and Livio can just go to a bar, get drunk, and have a good time. Maybe even with Knives joining them, and no one giving two shits about his bounty.
AniVash would want someone to keep him company. His journey is full of a lot more travel, and he seems like he just needs someone to play cards with, chess, and have intellectual conversations with. And, not that you'd be playing therapist by any means, but he wants someone to talk about his time before July. Sort out some thoughts, and have an outside opinion.
StamVash seems like he needs someone who will simply stick by him, no matter what. In the third episode, he didn't even hesitate when he was told to leave. Just picked up his bag that happened to be at his feet in the wreckage and left. I think at this point yes looking for companionship, and someone to actually live in his world with him. Someone who shares his efforts in stopping Knives from taking the plants from humans, and doesn't have to hide anything from.

I got so caught up in part 1 that I forgot to do part 2 of my Vol. 7 analysis! This time a little more about baby Knives and then adult Vash, just casually altering my very brain chemistry.
KNIVES. BOY. SHUTTING YOURSELF IN IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU. Remember what I said in part 1 about Knives avoiding Rem and holding it all back? Vash may have lashed out and tried to kill Rem (instantly regretting it), but sweet sensitive Knives held himself together so that he could try to kill Rem later... and he succeeded. Here Rem tries to get him to open up, but it's too little, too late. He's made up his mind. She grossly misunderstood how bad the situation was.
In case you didn't already know, don't do this. Don't bottle everything up. Find someone you can trust and tell them what's heavy. Don't be Knives. Don't let your trauma twist your thoughts and actions out of control. Can we read Knives as a cautionary tale, even just for a moment?
Tumblr media
Now, as an adult... For as much as he's quiet and cunning, he's still detached from reality. He can't see, or maybe he can't admit, that he's angry because he's fearful. He can't understand that, if he had an ounce of reflection, he would see that he's not better than the humans who he claim have no self-control, are all terrible, no nuance allowed. Or, perhaps he tells himself that since he's an Independent, and therefore something higher, that he's right by default.
A bit aside - I'm really surprised no one has brought up the fact that the twins are half-plant when they - especially Knives - talks as if he's entirely plant. He's completely ignoring the fact that he's human in many ways, even if not in full. Independents are weird, though, so I may be wrong and maybe the thought that they're half-human/half-plant is a translation thing from Stampede or whatever, I don't know.
I DO also love that this monologue comes around the same time that Knives tries to literally absorb Vash (bringing our symbolic assault count to 3) (way to go, boys) (stop walking into this situation, Vash). Knives complains about humans being parasites, meanwhile ya boy is trying to absorb his sister plants and his brother, trying to feed off their power, taking everything for himself. What a hypocrite.
Tumblr media
Then Vash and Knives have their little fight, which, oof, Vash thinking that this is the end of the line for him is so painful. We're only halfway through the manga and Vash thinks he's about to die already. It just prolongs the pain. Then we get Vash's line about running away and settling down with humans when it calms down, a line that Stampede took basically verbatim, and I love it so much. Vash doesn't talk about his future much, but he foresees himself always running, always hoping for a quiet, easy life in some nebulous, untouchable tomorrow. Once people gain compassion for him and the plants. Once they finally listen. Until then, he'll just keep trying.
Tumblr media
And, for all of Vash's suicidal ideations, for all of his grief and regret, he stubbornly tries to believe in a better tomorrow. For all he has to live with in his past, he can still use his hands now, make someone else's life easier. Through this he can himself feel better. There's a true thing about being altruistic in that it makes you happier as well. Compassion begets compassion. Hope begets hope. This is set so wonderfully within the same volume as Rem's story and drives home the way in which Vash took her words to heart. Yes, Rem was flawed just as everyone else is, but she tried to impart some goodness in these boys, and for what it's worth, it worked with Vash. And, is it really all that bad, to try to do what you can, to use your hands for good, to try to make someone else's life easier? To lessen someone's suffering? Altruism may be Vash's greatest virtue, and if that isn't admirable, then I don't know what is.
This boy is quickly escaping "haha blorbo" territory and heading straight into "irreversible impact on my very soul".

It might be a bit of a stretch for me to finish Volume 7 before the clock hits midnight on Sunday, but hey, I'll give it a shot.
Stream-of-consciousness thoughts for TriMax Vol. 7, Chapters 3-4 below.
Chapter 3: King of Loneliness
CW: Body Horror
You know, as much as I want to say this title absolutely, most definitely applies to Vash, it might apply to Wolfwood. Or to Knives. At least Vash and Wolfwood have friends along the way. At least they have each other.
Dude. Conrad opposed the experiments? Maybe I was being too harsh with him in my last notes.
It can be hard to know when to have difficult conversations like this with kids. I'm sure that was only further complicated by them being hyper-intelligent, extra-powerful plant babies. But kids are often better at understanding these things than we think they are.
Tumblr media
Well, at least Knives admits he's putting up a face here. And he's still young enough that Rem can peel it off. I'm glad he got to cry to her, even for a bit. Even if he rejects her comfort on the very next page and puts the mask right back on.
Now he's starting to look more like the Knives we know.
Ohhh, now he's straight up looking like the Knives in Vash's memories.
They do look pretty happy here, though. I mean, they even fall asleep all next to each other.
Tumblr media
Ugh, Baby Knives is not doing well.
He looks too much like Adult Knives here. It's uncanny.
Face stained with blood and tears and twisted in fear, and then blackness. Great composition.
Tumblr media
And there he is, celebrating his victory, the ships raining down around like falling stars.
Vash calls him out, but Knives isn't anywhere near ready to admit the truth of his statement. Ironically, he's to scared to admit he's scared.
"This is not fear. This is anger." Ohhhhh, man. I could go on about that from my own experience. Let's just say that a lot of times, those who have spent a lot of time afraid learn to mask it as anger, since anger allows a level of action that fear often does not.
Oooh, she's got some mandible action going on here. Also, not sure, but I don't think she's quite happy about this situation....
Tumblr media
Stuff going fwakoom?
Betcha Bagworm Legato is super-jealous of Elandira's ability to run to Knives' side right now.
Alright, that looks both very cool and very uncomfortable. Like, physically, it looks like it would at least be awkward, if not painful.
Tumblr media
Oh, yeah. Plant girl isn't happy about this at all. That is not a happy face. But since when has Knives cared about someone else's happiness compared to his own purposes? It's... it's been a long, long time.
He has a double angel arm now? Cool, cool. I'm sure that won't be a problem or anything....
Yeah, definitely thinking the chapter title is referring to Knives at this point.
Chapter 4: Bastards and the Blues
This cover picture of Knives is somehow simultaneously slutty and immensely disturbing.
Ha! It's the rubber band scene! Vash needs this.
Look at that. It's an old-timey mob, here for an old-timey hangin'.
Awww, I know we've just met him, but I feel like Hancock really doesn't deserve all this.
As if there was any doubt what Vash would do in this situation.
Ok, so... I could be wrong here, but this all feels off. Vash is doing Vash things, but he seems waaaaaay too openly depressed while doing them. It's like he's doing them because Wolfwood is standing there expecting him to do them. He's going through the motions (which, to be fair, is a legitimate tactic to get through depression for some), but his heart isn't in it.
Tumblr media
Yyyyyeah, hearing people scream about his inhumanity is probably not gonna help things.
At... at least he made two friends out of it? At least this time everyone backed down immediately? But Vash doesn't want people to live in fear of him like that.
Wolfwood playing lookout at the door.
If these guys turn out to be serial rapist baby snatchers or something, I'm going to burn down this whole manga. Vash needs a break. It doesn't need to be a big one.
Gods, his fake smiles are baaaaad here. He's not even trying to hide. He's just smiling 'cause he doesn't know what else to do.
Not sure how I feel about Vash getting drunk again, even if there's a spirit of camaraderie in this instance. I feel like Wolfwood, the actual heavy drinker here, feels the same. It's notable he's staying dry for this one.
Tumblr media
Granny here seems chill. Like she's seen enough things in her life to no longer have time for anything but kindness, even if the best she can do is the small kindness of booze.
OMG GENUINE WOLFWOOD PEACEFUL SMILE I SHALL TREASURE IT FOREVER
Tumblr media
Actually, these seem like good people for Vash to talk to right now. Sure, neither of them leveled a city (probably), but One-Eye at least has a deep understanding of what it is to be haunted by deep regrets.
WHYYYYY is the alcohol called Blades?!?!
Tumblr media
But... Vash doesn't want to be alone. And neither does this guy, for that matter, or he wouldn't have Handcock around. And Vash... he may be running and sad and hiding... but he's not alone this time, either.
Ugh, drunk and depressed Vash is in no shape to fight.
Wolfwood might be indulging a bit now, but he knows he's the designated driver here, and he's being careful enough to make sure he can keep an eye on Vash.
I like how the tails on Vash's jacket get longer when Nightow wants them to look particularly dramatic. These are beautiful, but if they were actually that long, he'd be tripping over them as they dragged through the sand.
Tumblr media
Also, flashy light is probably Bad.
Guess they're screwed.
The loss of communication would be really bad. It's always bad in times of conflict. Quick and reliable (or even semi-reliable) communication can win wars... and here I'm guessing Knives decided to take the upper hand for his first declaration of open conflict.
Yyyyyeeeeeaaaahhhh, Knives, honey, that doesn't look healthy....
What's that, Elandira? Were you secretly kinda hoping you'd somehow make it all the way through Knives' pending genocide?
Man, Vash sure can sober up fast.
There we go. Babygirl does genuinely look better here. Like, he's still sad, but he's not lying. He's genuinely grateful for this.
Tumblr media
Good, I'm glad they got a bit of a break.

I was about to respond to someone directly on their thoughts in the ether, but I decided that I didn't want to harsh their buzz or cause a fight, so I'll just let out my thoughts here. Someone was talking about Wolfwood's grief-reaction in Badlands Rumble to thinking that Vash died. How he wrecked the red fridge in his hotel room (I also see red things and think of Vash. I've had a few things named "Vash" because they were red - good thing Wolfwood wasn't anywhere near my old tower computer). How he donned Vash's sunglasses to go to battle. Vashwooders point to that and go PROOF OF THE SHIP! and I'm like, huh? Really now. I don't think it's just because I'm an asexual. I think if people want to use that as romantic subtext, it's fine. I just think that it's proof of closeness, whatever the form. This is a problem I have with fandom in general, actually - people taking any and every interaction and making an entire thing on it and acting like people who see things differently are wrong. I am going to share a sad story now. I lost someone very dear to me this year. A found-family / chosen family nephew who was also my best friend. (An adult). This was back in January. A huge part of my grief-reaction early on was anger... like pure unfiltered rage without direction. I didn't put my fist through a fridge but I did other things. I screamed at so many people who did not deserve it. I actually had to quit the fast food job I had at the time because I feared that I was going to beat this one snide high school kid who worked there who liked to purposefully antagonize me upside the head with a greasy spatula and decided that getting therapy was better than getting an assault charge. (He did not know my situation, he was just a jerk in general, but I knew that he would be evil if he knew and I was just... not well). Another part of my grief reaction and subsequent healing has been surrounding myself with Eevees. I spent many days doing a canvas painting of a frolicking Eevee. I made careful displays of my nephew's Eevee figurines. We bought a big Eevee-plush for his memorial service that now lives on my bed. This was because my nephew loved Eevees and I associated Eevee as his icon. Either that or Optimus Prime. I can tell you absolutely that if my nephew had been murdered by a bandit rather than a random heart attack and it was time for me to go to battle to bring said bandit-gang to justice, I'd be ornamented with every Eevee-related item I have in his honor. We never banged. We never wanted to bang. We were Aunt and Nephew. We were peas in a pod geeks. And I think that is lost to people in fiction fandom sometimes - the value and importance and even the possibility of other kinds of relationships. I think it's because our society puts so much importance on romance and sex that all else is forgotten. It is perfectly okay to see certain Vash and Wolfwood interactions and reactions to each other as romantic. I know full well that my little Vash x Meryl heart SOARED during that scene in Stampede where Vash comes out of his Plant-coma and tells Meryl that he heard her (Rem's) voice through her / "I heard your voice, too." depending on whether you're watching dub or sub. I don't think it makes Vash x Meryl canon in any way and the relationship is just as easily friends / "Hey, some humans like me!" But, yes, I understand the impulse. It's just... it's not the only way to interpret it or "irrefutable proof" for all fans.

Trimax Thoughts Vol. 3 Pt. 1
Some more miscellaneous thoughts. I realized it's actually more convenient to do these before any analysis because. Well. I actually haven't read this manga before. Why was I trying to do full analyses before just letting myself read it. Why am I a dumbass.
Anyways.
Tumblr media
It's the repression my dude
(Ok but can we talk about how Wolfwood doesn't really lie and his eyes convey his emotions whether he wants it or not and he still feels strongly because that attachment keeps him going and then how Vash has had to withdraw and shove everything into a box somewhere deep inside him because he always has to maintain a distance and always has to leave aughhh)
Ohhhhh that part where Vash is able to tell exactly how many strikes are incoming... I love how he becomes really precise and calculating in a fight. It's a really great way to show the severity of a situation and his skill and experience! (Bonus points: he does this in Tristamp too - I still cannot get over the way the animators chose to have him move right before he pulls out his gun in ep 1 - I went on an unhinged ramble about that. He's always fluid and grounded. I adore those animators they did a fantastic job.)
Tumblr media
!!! I think this is the first time we've actually seen Knives' face since the Fifth Moon Incident! ...there's something to examine in this.
Feral Wolfwood <3
Tumblr media
Yikes. If we wanted more emphasis on the way a lot of people around Vash do not stop to consider the severity of death. The violence is so typical in this world it's treated as a scene from which one can be detached. Vash's honest distress and compassion as entertainment :(
Tumblr media
Hey. What the fuck.
Tumblr media
The baby with the gun would be a lot funnier if I didn't know what Leonof had to do to people to make his puppets.
Tumblr media
SICK AND TWISTED. WTF.
Ok say what you will though but Leonof so far has been the only one of the GHG that I think actually understands the assignment. Like. Yeah, this sure is the way to fucking break the guy. What the hell.
Oh, Vash knows him? Maybe that's why Leonof knows how to hurt him so well...?
AUGH he had puppet Doc, who vouched for Vash earlier to Brad, call him a demon!!! This also means he was killed! WTF
AUGHHHH wolfwood :(((
Tumblr media
Meryl and Milly I love you so so much
Tumblr media
Whjfhbdsjfbhv??? Girl??????
Vash: *starts blaming himself* Luida: "no." Vash: "oh, ok." :(
Hair down Vash <3
I really love the way we find out a bit more about Vash in this chapter. Him taking Meryl and Milly to a special place that helps him relax and heal and feel closer to Rem, even if he doesn't quite tell them that's what it is. Meryl knowing it's important somehow anyways and feeling like she can see him a little more clearly. Wolfwood freaked the hell out by the idea that Vash is immortal, but instead of leaving it at his assumptions, he still goes to talk to Luida and ask questions, who immediately proceeds to emphasize how lonely yet kind he is. We learn a lot about Vash in this chapter without him actually revealing anything about himself directly - all through other people, and the impact he's made on them. And I like how even though we find out more and more the differences between human and whatever Vash actually is, we circle right back around to confirming what we already knew about him from the beginning - he's fundamentally a kind man with a lot of pain in his heart who always makes the active choice to be nice. Just. Agh.
Wolfwood, running while carting his stupid IV pole over his shoulder: "oh fuck I need to protect women (and Vash)"
Tumblr media
Softest look I've ever seen. What.
But ohhh does this make me happy. Because he's spent this volume thinking Vash has no survival instinct because he's immortal, etc., which terrifies him because he cannot understand not fighting to survive. Vash's smile makes a comeback here, but he now understands that it's not just a mask, it is the way he fights to survive. That smile is Vash's struggle to live in the same way the violent struggle is his, and Wolfwood I think/hope is starting to realize again that the gap is not so wide between them. He's calmed enough to remember that he actually likes this guy. Augh.

Trigun Bookclub Trimax Vol8 Part1
Vol01: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3  | Vol02: Part 1 | Part 2
Trimax: Vol01 Part 1 Vol01 Part 2 | Vol02 Part 1 Vol02 Part 2 |
Vol 03 Part 1 | Vol03 Part2 | Vol04 Part1 | Vol04 Part2 | Vol05 |
Vol06 | Vol07 | Vol08 Part1
As a warning, I will start babbling about Vashwood in this volume (though not really in this part yet) and then probably in all volumes to come, too. Obviously because I love the pairing but also because their relationship is so important and impactful, and this volume marks such an important milestone.
What I really like in Vash and the talk between him and Knives at the start of Chapter 1 is, that Vash also acknowledges the pain and abuse that humans have inflicted upon the Plants. He totally understands Knive's anger and why he acts that way, but the kind sides of the humans that Vash was witness to as well, Knives never got the chance to learn. And if you'd try to show kindness to him now, he wouldn't appreciate or even see it.
Tumblr media
Not the face of someone who's happy to be back with his old crew obviously. (Sometimes some drawings of Wolfwood make him look so much less bulky and more fragile and like the tiny Wolfwood, like here on the right...maybe because we can't see these huge shoulders. I like that!)
Tumblr media
Still trying to live by Vash's and now his ideals, even though there's no way these soldiers are gonna get back out of this alive anyway...and how he stubbornly doesn't answer Chapel...(Meanwhile Livio is thinking "Nice! Free banquet! *continues to slaughter the men*)
Tumblr media
Oh my boy you've come such a long way :'(
Tumblr media
The whole rest of the talk between Knives and Vash at the end of ch1 was a great character insight, and next to what lots of other people already said I wouldn't know what to add to that. So I'm just choosing to save these panels here, sums it up pretty nicely and we get to see the two brothers in a nice comparison!
Chapter 2:
Tumblr media
Please take my boy out of this situation. He clearly doesn't want to be there. (the way Wolfwood looks so much not-in-control of the situation....oh man)
Tumblr media
Make a pirouette, and I'll give you a 10/10 for this jump, Knives.
Tumblr media
If some had not been aware until now, at this point at the latest everybody will have noticed that Nightow doesn't fuck around with depicting some traumatic and cruel stuff. (And boy does he know how to do it)
Tumblr media
There are so many awesome pages in these later volumes that I'm basically just copying whole pages in these posts here but HOLY COW doesn't this look epic.
Tumblr media
And the whole time, Vash is unable to do anything. At least he's giving Legato a hard time, too.
Tumblr media
That above panel damn. And look how it's killing Wolfwood internally. He's seeing all those evil deeds done by the arc, helping alongside Chapel now too, probably, and then he's already got the guild of bringing Vash here to get him trapped....all just because he wants to save his home and the kids there but BOY is it killing him inside. It sucks when you have to be the bad guy to save the ones you care about.
Also, the turn the story takes at this point, with everything falling into chaos so quickly...it's gotten very quickly so much darker now. I do like dark stories too so I was enjoying this with anticipation how it could get resolved when I read this for the first time. Still, very tough stuff to digest.
Tumblr media
And then, of course, omg these girls appear again!!! You go!!! However you managed to survive, you're looking well. I'm also glad Luida is still here too ♥
Chapter 3:
Tumblr media
If I'm ever in need for a mechanic and had to choose from the Trigun cast you know I'd go for Brad. Look how crafty he looks with that..drill...thingy. Leaking faucets, here's your mortal enemy!
Tumblr media
THANK YOU Luida. Yes, Vash has dangerous powers, but he's also Vash and you all owe him so much!! Not letting some fear prevent you from trusting in him!
Tumblr media
Wolfwood awoooing at the moon, just like his name says. Also, this was the scene where the plants memories are being shown, and I love that we actually get to see something from their view! The way it's done, with only same-size panels from the same view is also the perfect way to make that clear.
Tumblr media
Super neat way to show how all these different memories and plant consciousnesses (?) are breaking him apart
Tumblr media
Please look at our queen in all her murderous glory.
Tumblr media
oh god oh god oh god (I'm reading this for the 12234th time but still)
Tumblr media
oh god OH YES

Mary accepted your explanation that your "husband" had started drinking again and you had locked him in the room. You also got away with both portions of food that you moved into your room on the pretext that you'd go and keep watch over the fool. Mary seemed very understanding, and you started to wonder what Harold was like behind closed doors. Either way, Vash got to eat two portions for both lunch and dinner. You even helped him to the table; he moved largely on his own, his body simply stiff and his head spinning. You offered him support and guidance. Other than to eat, Vash spent the day sleeping, his quiet snoring being a comforting sound to you. The day went by very quickly, like in a daze. You didn't have much to do, so you paced around a lot or laid in bed next to Vash, careful not to wake him.
You don't dare fall asleep; the paranoid thoughts are drumming in your head. You take comfort in both the knife and gun strapped to your legs, occasionally touching them lightly to remind yourself that they are still there. You don't wish to hurt anyone, let alone take their lives, but if you have to for the sake of Vash, you will. He wouldn't be happy with that mentality, so you keep it to yourself.
Once again, you lay on the bed next to Vash's sleeping figure. Darkness has creeped into the room, and from outside, you hear some muffled rowdiness. You assume it comes from the saloon or from the front of the inn, but there is likely no cause for concern. Still, your body tenses up, with slight tremors running through it. Vash turns around in his sleep, grunting a little as he faces you. His metal arm is feeling along the bed till it reaches you, then grabbing the small of your back and pulling you into him. His arms wrap around you, and his chin lands on your head. His scent and proximity cause you to relax again, and the tremors subside.
Tumblr media
Vash wakes up early in the morning before the suns have risen. He places a kiss on your head and nuzzles his face into your hair. His actions wake you from your daze, and you squeeze him a bit, holding tight and pressing your forehead into his chest.
"Good morning!" you whisper into the small space between your bodies.
"Morning, Sweet Pea!" His breath ruffles your hair.
"How are you feeling?" Your legs are intertwined as his hand moves along your back.
"Almost to full health, I think," he says. "A lot less tired, at the very least. I think I'm fine strutting about on my own now!"
"Do you think you can ride? I'd like to leave. Not that anywhere is safe." You speak quietly, not lifting your face.
"What makes you say that?" He sounds surprised, and you come clean about the whole situation, including the strange "humans" in the abandoned village, someone giving a tip about your movements, the temporary $$2,000,000 reward someone put out, and the town swarming with bounty hunters when you got here.
"I'm so sorry you had to go through all that by yourself." He squeezes you tighter. "It couldn't have been easy, but you did so well! I'll try my best to never put you in such a situation again!"
"You better!" you say with a genuine hint of anger in your voice that makes Vash laugh.
"So, where do you want to go?" He says that as he snuggles you closer, he's like a giant snake wrapping himself around you, his long limbs engulfing you and holding you tightly.
"Where can we go? Apparently the bounty hunters scattered when they thought you didn't show up in town the first night. I think there are still many around. I doubt any settlement in the area is safe."
"I think you worry too much." He answers your pondering with amusement.
"How could you say that after you were unconscious for three days?" You sound upset.
"I slept for the last day... And it's not like it's anything new that there are bounty hunters after me; it has been like this for a little while. We know now that something is up, and we will be more careful when it comes to strange people and places, but you and I will get out of anything!"
You let out a big sigh. He would be the death of you if you weren't immortal. You run your nails gently over his back and feel him shiver under your touch, soothing the tickle with the palm of your hand.
"So, where do you suggest we go?" you ask.
"More East? Or would you rather take a steamer from Terminal?"
"I would avoid the steamer; I feel like there are too many people. Both for your sake and mine."
"Then we will stock up on some food and water and head east and perhaps north after that to September or November." His hand is tightly holding the small of your back, making your bare skin tingle. His head shifts, and you feel his breath by your ear.
"Have I told you how wonderful you are?" His voice is so low and tender. "You are beautiful, strong, and kind. You're funny and tough, and the fire burning in you is so warm." He pauses for a moment and says, "I am so glad I found you, and I will keep following you across any desert, no matter how hard you try to get rid of me! Cause you are stunning in every single way. My lovely Iris!"
His hand traces under your shirt on your back, and he hugs you again. His heart feels like it's on fire, the same flame that burns in your eyes—the untamed and wild inferno. Once again, he feels so much, like he is going crazy, with the desire to be with you, to hold you, and to keep you safe. The feelings are so overwhelming that they almost feel aggressive. But it's actually nothing but love.
Your fingers trace the curvature of his body—the high points and valleys of his muscles. You feel the different textures of his skin under your fingertips. You trace over his chest, down over his abs and belly button, creeping onto his hip, and up along his side. You take your time to truly appreciate his body for what it is, no longer having to worry about its condition. His tight hug restricts your movement, but you end up slipping your hands onto his back. At the start, you feel it with your fingertips—the augmentations, the scarring, and his skin that's still whole. You try to remember every inch of it, to burn it into your memory. With the second pass, you use your nails, scratching his back gently, and it sends shivers up his spine.
Vash lets out a little moan by your ear when you trail over an especially sensitive spot. Your face is still buried in his chest, and your nose is filled with his comforting scent. His hands touch your back, traveling gently over your skin and feeling the dip of your side, grabbing at your waist. You hear his heart beating hard and fast, and there is a certain stiffness in his arms. The breathing by your ear is deep and quick. It feels like your insides are on fire; despite the comfort, this doesn't make you feel calm and peaceful. The feeling is intense and raw; it's rough around the edges, and the flow of it is so strong that it carries your hand to the waistband of his pants, feeling the edge of it, and your fingers dig between his skin and the drawstring. Your other hand is looking to grab hold of something, traveling up and intertwining with his hair. Your body tenses, squeezing his leg between your knees, and you look up to find his face, but before you can focus on that, his lips are on yours. They seem to try to be gentle at first, but quickly turn into the mouth of someone with an unquenchable hunger. His lips force yours to open, his hand on your side pulling you up, closer to him. The other one slides down onto your ass. Your fingers are pulling on his hair as your other hand finds the front of his pants.
He holds you as he rolls onto his back, and it takes minimal adjusting for you to end up sitting on him with your legs to either side. His hands grab the back of your thighs, pulling you up a bit more before sliding over your sides, bunching up your shirt as they go. Your hands travel along his arms, moving his hands onto your breasts before leaning in, his parted lips already waiting for yours. His hands squeeze the soft tissue through your underwear, and it makes you exhale. The pressure on your chest disappears as he grabs your shirt to pull it over your head, breaking the kiss. His hands greedily move over your back onto your shoulders and neck, the straps of your bra slipping down.
He turns again, pinning you between the bed and his body. His lips move from your lips to your neck, over to the collarbone. You find yourself holding his hair again as his kisses reach your chest, trailing diagonally across before pushing the underwear out of the way to focus his lips and tongue on one of your breasts. A moan escapes you, and his hand moves down your body in between your spread legs. You feel the metal stroking you through the fabric, making both your desire and his burn out of control. It feels like nothing is enough, like you've waited for something your whole life.
His other hand travels under your curved back to undo the hooks of your bra. You want to feel him—all of him. You want to grab him, squeeze him, stroke him, and dig your nails into him. He drives you wild by moving down with his kisses, removing his weight completely as he kneels between your legs, holding both of them for a moment. You see his eyes; there's an edge to them you don't normally see—a fire much like the one you feel. He lifts your leg to rest on his shoulder as he glides his hands to your thigh to undo the clasp of the gun holster and put it aside. He releases that leg and repeats this with your other one to remove the knife sheath. His hands move down your thighs over your ass and hips to undo your pants. It feels like he is teasing you as he pulls them off. He lays down again, coming closer as soon as they are removed, one of your legs between his as he kisses you again, one hand keeping him up, the other exploring your bits through the thin fabric of your underwear before pushing it to the side and playing with you. The breathy moans sounding out his name are music to his ears as his lips move onto your neck again.
One of your arms is thrown around him, your nails digging into his back; the other has untied the drawstring and is feeling him down, stroking along the length of him before pushing down his pants. The hunger is still growing in both of you, as is the desire to explore more of each other.
