Today in Kyra's ramblings; I'm replaying acv (what a surprise, right?) because I accidentally deleted my latest save and I still regret not having a single save to recover it all because the latest autosaves were replaced with white haired eivor lol and just wanted to say I really like what would be Odin's first appearances he seems actually nice instead of just lowkey manipulative towards Eivor lol

I've been really thinking about Valhalla lately and the way the story played out from my perspective as a player who solely plays f!Eivor and how that plays into the larger AC franchise. And I'll say that my hottest take is that if Eivor Varinsdottir was supposed to be canon, then they shouldn't have had the m!Eivor option at all.
And like, I get Ubisoft is a deeply misogynistic developer and this is not at all a new criticism, but just think about how much more depth to the entire world of the Assassins and Templars there would be if we actually had like, real female characters, let alone playable characters.
I've only played Odyssey and Valhalla because those are the only games I give a fuck about, but my point remains. The depth in those two games would have been amazing had they focused on one female protagonist and not making the game as gender neutral as possible so that misogynistic fan boys can keep their power fantasies and never have to consider a perspective outside their own while the rest of the world does.
Like Eivor would have had a MUCH more interesting story if she had to deal with the fact that she was a Norse woman in 9th century England. That changes the WHOLE STORY.
Dag would have had a legitimate reason to be mad at Eivor for using the power and authority lent to her by Sigurd. Sigurd would have had a real reason to be so dismissive of Eivor's input into his decisions. The Christians would have had one more reason to despise Eivor and the Raven Clan, not only are they heathens but Eivor is a woman daring to defy her social position.
The world of Assassins Creed would have had leagues more depth to it if the creators acknowledged that being a competent gender role defying woman is SO different from being a competent dude. Eivor should have had a million more roadblocks ahead of her as a woman trying to lead a clan in 9th century England.
And the worst part? We know it's not a research problem and we know it's not a "we don't believe women had those problems" thing either. Because RANDVI IS RIGHT THERE.
Randvi is one of the more important female characters in Valhalla and her backstory includes marrying a man she didn't know for the sake of securing an alliance. This isn't about shipping or anything, that's just basic info about Randvis character. And it doesn't take a genius or a historian to know that her situation is not a novel one, that happened over and over again throughout all of history. We KNOW that Randvi's story is not a unique one, and it's actively acknowledged in the game! So playing an entire game as a hyper competent female leader, who is also surrounded by plenty of competent female NPCs, fell REALLY flat for me when we see other characters face the woman-problem (AKA being a woman trying to get anything done at that time in that place) and Eivor never once faces it.
No one says "why should we listen to you, you're a woman" even when you are playing female eivor because that's how the game has to be for those who play male eivor. But I'm sorry I get that shit now as a woman who knows what she's talking about in this time, at this place. Eivor should not have been an exception. We see her regularly prove her mettle to other characters for different reasons (you're a heathen, you're a stranger, you're not from around here) but never the most OBVIOUS barrier being "you're a woman."
And I'm not saying that Eivor shouldn't have been a badass warrior or anything. In fact, it would add so much depth to her character to think about how different she is in comparison to the women around her who DO follow the expected gender roles of the time.
Eivor's parents died when she was young. We know that her mother was a competent enough warrior to hold her own in battle. That would not be surprising to me and it wouldn't have broken my suspension of disbelief. But when you think about Eivor and this pivotal moment to her character, knowing that she was a child of a nobleman and would be raised by both parents to be able to fight and be of noble blood, the fact that she's rather rough and tumble, focused on fighting and valhalla, then it really raises some questions.
If Varin and Rosta hadn't died, would Eivor be a viking? She probably would have had a better political education. She wouldn't be fumbling her way through leadership the way that she does in game. She'd probably have to be more clever because she has to manipulate her way through society, instead of blustering and fighting.
She'd also probably be married. Either to someone she cared about, or to someone politically viable like Randvi and Sigurd. She would have had her father choose a match for her, and she'd probably have little say in the match as well.
But styrbjorn raised her "as his own." So she learned to fight and became a viking. But that doesn't change the fact that she came from a noble family. She would not be so high status if she didn't come from a noble high status family. The idea that she doesn't behave like the other noble born women around her is kind of a key characteristic. And it's never brought to the front or explored because that would break the immersion for the fan boys who'd rather play as Havi.
Anyway this is my thesis for many of my fics because there's just so much there that is completely ignored because it literally CANT be explored if Eivor is a man. Ubisoft for the love of god hire a female historian I'm begging

thoughts on the valhalla final chapter preview
beyond embarrassing. what the fuck was that 💀
i mean i guess at least i'm glad they're doing SOMETHING to conclude eivor's story but oh wow just a small quest that i think was said was gonna be free (not that i'm upset about not paying money lmao but it shows it's not a high effort expansion) a few stilted animations like we're used to, eivor going 'hm i think it's time to go actually byeee' that's so,,,,
when i played the main story i expected a grand continuation. there's imo quite a heavy implication that eivor will be forced to leave england,,, (godwin tells her 'this island will not be conquered by you, you will not subdue it by force', she tells basim england 'snarls at us at every corner, i begin to despair for ever settling here' and basim replies with 'perhaps the stars write your path and you will never have a home here', and randvi mentions that aelfred definitely knows about ravensthorpe and it remains to be seen if the settlement will stand the test of time which sounds REALLY ominous) but i guess eivor just. decides to go????
i feel like the loose ends don't even end there, there's a lot of questions remaining about the extent to which eivor understands her isu ancestry and/or basim's betrayal. it looks like they'll address to odin part but. why is he showing up as m!eivor instead of the old man, like we've always seen him so far. ig they'll come up w an explanation like 'oh well eivor sees odin looking a lot more like her noww' but. sounds dumb either way
i am happy that they're FINALLY gonna be touching on the fact that aelfred is in the middle of creating the fucking templar order cause that was a loose end that would've been really stupid to abandon lmao. and it looks like she's going to talk to hytham so. yay for that at least
but it's so fucking disappointing like. remember dawn of ragnarok??? the dlc that had nothing to do with anything and that NO ONE asked for?? remember how they paid for a whole fucking cinematic trailer?? remember how it played everytime you opened the game man they went heavy with the promotion and for what. this is what eivor's final chapter should have been. a grand story, good animation, new and exciting locations, a shocking event that sets things into motion like aelfred destroying ravensthorpe. eivor deserves so much better and i'm so fucking mad. maybe i'll be proven wrong but the showcase really worried me. you usually show some of the best you've got in a promotion right? there was not even a mo-capped scene, no different looking locations, nothing. it looks awful and my girl deserves so much better

i have BRAINROT and i don't want to do homework so here's my ramblings about the jomsvikings in ac valhalla uhh some spoilers for characters you can recruit from ledecestrescire, grantebridge, east anglia, essexe and snottinghamscire but no story spoilers
also i kept talking and now i have opinions on how there should be more long-term romance options in the game because variety is the spice of life so! that's also in this post now!
first of all?? mannequins down by the docks 2/10
in all seriousness, once you recruit characters you literally can't interact with them at all beyond ship stories and that's.. kinda lame? you know how when coelbert is staying in ravensthorpe you can have little conversations with him? something like that for the jomsvikings would already do so much to make them feel more alive. it honestly doesn't even have to be anything fancy, just a few conversations similar to the ship stories, or about how they're getting along with the other residents of ravensthorpe or possibly referencing some story events from their own arcs or others you've completed (vili and his father know the ragnarssons and this is basically never brought up except for halfdan sending a gift during the snottinghamscire arc - WHY is this never brought up i want to know what ivarr and vili thought of each other).
Each character seems to have around 5 ship stories so give them the about same number of conversations, set them on repeat for each time you return to ravensthorpe and they'll already feel much more alive than the soullesss husks lurking on the pier. it wouldn't be for every character, the 4 recruitable characters + bragi and maybe the lieutenant (just give them the save male/female voice and some generic conversations - it can't be worse than they are now they literally do NOTHING)
in an ideal world i'd also swap romance around a little bit. i should probably mention that i'm aroace and usually play that way in my first playthrough but i'm on my second playthrough rn and that includes playing eivor as a character rather than as 'me' if that makes sense. all this is to say on this playthough i am romancing people and since i don't experience attraction i usually go for characters that give me gender envy hence why i've not romanced any women so keep in mind i might be a little biased about who i would have as romance options.
randvi's a great character and i like her a lot but i don't want to romance her - it's kind of weird that there's 3 romancable characters in ravensthorpe but only one you can have an actual relationship with, it's even weirder since there's only one quest to hang out with randvi (as far as i know) but tarben and petra get two each that i won't spoil here. i think making petra + tarben into actual romances like randvi instead of fwb would the player some choice between gender because as it is there's no male romance beyond flings.
perhaps a bit more daring but i'd also make hytham or vili a romance option - probably vili since he's already a 'romance' option + it'd fit well with the trend of eivor having one man and woman they know from norway (vili + randvi) they can romance as well as one man and one woman (tarben + petra) that they met after arriving in england. i'm not ususally a big fan of romance in games so maybe this is just the part of me that really likes tarben and vili speaking but i don't think it could hurt in any way
so. maybe i'm weird for being so focused on the characters in ac games esp since i'm a dude because best i can tell there seems to be a pretty clear split between men and women in terms of focus on gameplay/characters (i have seen very few nb ac fans so i can't speak on that) and wow my favourite part of a game is giving me gender dysphoria now this might be the dumbest thing to ever cause it
anyway i really like most of the ac valhalla characters and i wanna be able to interact with them more
thats my assassins creed rambling done for the week maybe i'll post some art in a bit we'll see

kind of an unpopular opinion but a personal one to me, under readmore:
I find it hard to show edits appreciation and support content creators including M!Eivor. Because I'm still being reminded of ub*soft devs listened to misogynistic, sexist dudebros and said dudebros felt the need to hate on f!Eivor ever since after her trailer was released. It's the same treatment as what F! Shepard had gotten. people hating on her voice like ??? Well, I like her voice and it's a nice change from feminine voices at least to me. Eivor being a canon female protagonist, she should had her own standalone game tbh.
Being a woman, and a queer lgbta+, who grew up with so little female representations through the 90s to 00s and whatsnot where female characters are often in the 'overly-sexualised', 'reduced to love interest plot' and 'there is only one girl in the cast' tropes. That shit had to hurt and it is mostly why I prefer to play video games with female protagonist, not only as preferred comforts, but also I like to see women kick ass without defining beauty.
I do not like being pushed into 'you should play m!eivor if you want' and honesty, I just cannot nor do I plan to. F!Eivor was just everything to me, she doesn't have to be 'overly beautiful' like Kassandra or other female characters and had a deep voice (I know it's from her injury, but woman can have naturally deep voices and it's pleasant for me). I don't need to change anything, or use retexture mods, on her because well, I have self image woes and self conscious of my complexion. I only used muscle mods because Eivor should had been buff to begin with.
So, it's really nice and meant a lot to me since Primal's Jennifer 'Jen' Tate (another female protag I love).
I'm sorry to those who played m!eivor because of this asdfghjkl. I do appreciate seeing your lovely edits and your ships screencaps. ❤️

I've always struggled to connect with female characters, regardless of whether they're queer or cishet. The only female character I've ever been comfortable playing as in any video game is Kassandra in Odyssey, for reasons that are still unknown to me. (Is it because she presents as quite masculine, or just a badass?) However, I don't feel the same connection with the canon female Eivor, compared to the male version of Eivor, and this comes down to my own queerness - not just as a non-heteronormative man, but also as a transgender man.
(Ironically, you might think that makes me connect more with a masc-presenting female character like Eivor, but apparently not. Yeah, I'm just as confused as you are.)
Ever since I got into gaming as more than just an occasional hobby, I've played every possible game as male - be it Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Sunset Overdrive (an underrated game, by the way - the multiplayer scene might be dead, but it's still a hilarious experience). There is an inherent part of me that despises playing as a woman, because I despised being referred to as female throughout much of my early childhood. Until I came out and started living openly as a trans man, I resented people assuming that I was female.
I'm not against games letting players have the option of a female lead, or even having a sole female lead - I've been replaying the Tomb Raider games and remembering how much fun they are, I want to get into games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Control. However, I do believe that if you (as a game developer) are going to give people that option of choosing whether to play as male or female, you should also make sure that the rest of the game reflects that choice, which in my opinion is where Valhalla falls short compared to Odyssey.
As I am playing Valhalla with the ungodly amount of stuttering and crashing (even without mods), I see the main campaign is setting up for something, but I’m just so unmotivated with the story, because whenever I get some time to play, the maláka stutters, I can tell Valhalla needs at least 6-12 more months. I love Eivor so I’ll endure till the end, 10fps at a time. She kicks a table while an a$shole is standing on it got me clapping cuz I did that in school once while wearing dresses, it was glorious and I didn’t get into trouble. When I play MMORPGs (which I used to play a bunch while I was living in Vietnam), what makes me choose between M/F character is very simple: the outfits, if there are too many boobily/revealing armors, Imma have to play as the dudes, again.
This is embarrassing but Odyssey is my very first and still only choice-based RPG game and I still haven’t played others like DA, ME, Witcher, so I really don’t have a bar per se. I do agree with you though: if a studio makes a choice-based RPG game, then your decisions as the player and the experiences should reflect those choices. Otherwise it defeats the purpose of providing choices to begin with *looking at THAT Odyssey DLC*. I doubt I’m even half way through the main campaign in Valhalla so I’m not sure if I can make a fair comparison in terms of choices’ impact. I can only say based on my impression with what I know so far: I feel like Valhalla was meant only for Eivor and then M_Player was added later because, well, we all know the answer to that. Odyssey has choice-based side quests, but Valhalla removes side quests entirely so there’s that. I know choosing to romance a certain character will affect Valhalla main campaign’s ending, does that count? I know giving choices allows more players to enjoy the game and all the financial success already proves that. It’s weird to say this but because of AC and how Ubi churns out a game every 2 yrs w/ only 3-yr dev cycle, it is hard to make AC as a full-fledged choice-based RPG. I don’t know much of the lore but I’d rather not think about how it’s gonna look if there are 5 different endings that can be canon and what that means for the subsequent game. Also, these games are being developed in parallel so I’m not sure if the consequences of choices can even be reflected across games. I feel like there’s also this torn between keeping one canon/ending vs. choices (there were some shades being thrown around as to how Valhalla will be more cohesive than Odyssey), because AC didn’t started out as full-fledged RPG, unlike like DA, ME, or Witcher. Ubi has a lot of re-navigating on what they want to do tbh now that they’re in this crossroad between the old and the new AC, or they’d just go with whatever approach that makes them the most money.
Tbh I don’t have any stake in AC as a franchise, my bar rn is pls make the game not having a stroke only 15 mins in. I do like the aspect of a character creation menu and full-fledged choice-based RPG and I also like the single narrative route (like GOW or Ghost of Tsushima), but what I like the most is badass female protags, so if next game has a female protag, I’d most likely play, especially if it’s set in Asia or even just non-Eurocentric setting. If not, I think I’d be busy with Forspoken.

I would've reblogged your addition on my post but I didn't want to air anything you didn't want or add any undue opinions to detract yours. So I just wanted to say I'm very sorry that happened to you, and that was what I referencing. I see it a lot in this fandom, and it is both discouraging and irritating to see in just regular posts on my dash, much less it happening to people personally. I haven't even wanted to share anything from my Valhalla playthrough or pictures since it is a male!eivor playthrough. But just know you are very valid for your feelings and I understand/feel the same, and again I am so sorry that has all happened to you and your friends.
(first of all,for all the people who didn't notice and/or read it,we are talking about this post right here)
Hey buddy, you easily could have reblogged it and adding everything you wanted without any problem, really, most of all because it's a post you made. Plus I don't really think that you could say any undue opinions to detract mine,I think we are on the same mindset after all no? (If I wouldn't think exactly like you,I wouldn't have reblogged it).
And I know right?I daily see posts on my dash regarding this and it just really upset me (not only about AC Valhalla, but also about AC Odyssey and about other ac games that have two playable characters). When I read things like that I jus become uhhh...well,as I said in that last post,I feel like they are just attacking everyone else who decided to play as male Eivor. It's okay if you stop yourself on talking shits on the character only, but when you go over and start to directly JUDGE people just because of their choices? That's too much. I feel restricted almost, not going to lie.
See?You said it. You didn't post anything related to your own playthrough simply just because it was one with m!Eivor. Why?Because it feels like you aren't free to post what you yourself like and enjoy without being afriad that there are some fans out there ready to attack you with words just because of your choice. Not to exaggerate but it seems like they private you of your free will? The will to decide who to play as and to enjoy the things you like.
Pezzi di merda.
So yes,anyway. Thank you for making that post,it truly gave me confidence ;) I would like to give 0 fucks and do whatever I want but with all those people it seems like I am... ✨ u n d e r p r e s s u r e ✨ (dundurudundurudundun tsss)

I don't play assassin's creed so I'm confused but Eivor isn't a character? Is it a race of people? Either way, the female version (?) that you've reblogged is really really attractive 🤤🤤
oh no theyre a character, its their name regardless if you pick m or f. theyre quite attractive you are right! theyre premade but its the first character ubisoft made that you can edit in game. just tattoos and hair, but its cool! you can make fem eivor with a shaved head!! (there is a way with mods in odyssey, its a bit complicated but worth i!) and theyre both very very buff 🤤🤤
