So I've been thinking lately about how Mithrun is Kabru's dark mirror (more on that another time- it needs its own post), and I thought it interesting that one of their parallels is that they were both cared for by Milsiril, but in opposite directions. She took Kabru in as her foster after he was orphaned and tried to convince him not to become an adventurer. On the flip side, she helped rehabilitate Mithrun specifically so that he could rejoin the Canaries.
And I kept wondering: why?
For Kabru, obviously she loves him a whole lot- despite any other shortcomings in their relationship, I do believe that.
So I get why she tries to convince him not to go dungeoning, and, failing that, at least prepares him as thoroughly as she can.
But why help Mithrun? She used to hate Mithrun, but after realizing what a secretly twisted person he was, she actually thought of him more positively (oh, Milsiril). So it wasn't as if she held the kind of grudge that might motivate her to make his already-depleted life even more miserable by sending him back to the dungeons. And it wasn't that she felt bad for him either, since she didn't visit Mithrun for the first ~20 years of his recovery.
The Adventurer's Bible says that Utaya was the impetus for Mithrun returning to the Canaries, but Milsiril is the one who made the trip to see him and tell him about it.
Why would Milsiril work so hard to get her old coworker back into fighting fit? Why encourage him to return to such a dangerous lifestyle, when she was the one who chose not to mercy-kill him?
That last panel is such a crazy thing to hint at and then never elaborate on. Without it we could have just thought that Milsiril wanted the Canaries' work to continue without her, even if it seemed out of character. I think some people even assume she's just a natural caretaker as a foster mom and handwave it to include nursing Mithrun too. What could Milsiril's suspicious motives be? What does she gain from Mithrun joining the Canaries that isn't an altruistic desire to see dungeons safely sealed? Feeling a sense of responsibility for the work she left behind isn't an ulterior motive.
My theory is: Milsiril, knowing that Mithrun was empty save for the burning desire to face the demon again, wound him up like a clockwork doll and pointed him back at the dungeons.
Hoping that he'd eliminate the biggest threat to Kabru's life, before it was too late for him.
Milsiril the puppetmaster.

tbh i think that even unwinnable fights should be winnable. some of the BEST fights i've ever run as a dm were ones i built kill the players (in a fun way. I had some cutscenes prepped so even the loss would be a different flavour of win)- but then they were clever bastards and managed to either win the fights or pull themselves out of trouble. I think it's perfectly fine to plan for a fight that players aren't supposed to win, but you need to let them. if they can't win, they can't lose, and the meaning of that encounter is diminished. do that too many times, and they stop trusting you to give them roleplay prompts and start expecting to sit there waiting while you drive the story for them.
but if they can win... if there is always the chance to win, no matter how impossible the odds, then they ALWAYS have hope. they always get invested. they feel the big emotions of success or the big emotions of failure, and you fucking Win as a dm/roleplay prompter/lead bastard.

Barely two minutes into Grian's Ep 8 and I'm losing it... what a fantastic task, oh my gosh. Jimmy on Discord haunting him from beyond the grave...
Every bit of that so far, from "No way!" to "Prove that you can see me!" and "This- This is mad-" is gonna make awesome 'fic material...
Jimmy: "And you're looking at Etho and ZombieCleo"
Grian, panicked, cutting him off: "Okay okay okay okay okay!"

Things about Halsin that are rarely mentioned but fascinate me: he's slept with a Nelanther pirate which means he's either been to the Nelanther Isles (and survived) or to one of the ports a ship of theirs docked in, and he's firsthand encountered a haunted doll.

idk i told my partner i didnt want to discuss a particular tv show if they watched it and it made me realise how much the fandom's treatment of it and the attitude around it has completely soured my ability to engage in discussion about if even tho it does a lot of things well that i honestly enjoyed on top of what i think it did terribly and really alienated me as a viewer
and that just. makes me sad
its bc so much fandom is so concentrated and online but its so miserable when you enjoy or appreciate a piece of media but have a different take on it / enjoy it despite its flaws etc and like
you're in a position of just not being able to discuss it w its nuances or flaws taken into account bc of nitpicky language and unnecessarily aggressive response

Do you guys ever think about Iris' blushing sprite?
Do you ever think that the first time we see it. is RIGHT AFTER she hears Phoenix use her real name for the first time?
Imagine loving a man. that didn't even know your REAL NAME until five years after you "broke up." Imagine that man loving you back despite him not knowing a thing about who you really are. And you're okay with that
Because you don't really like who you are anyway.
And once the illusion shatters and fate forces the two of you apart?
None of it matters anymore. If anything it's what you deserve for thinking you could live out your lie with no consequences. It's what you deserve for daring to try to find happiness in a world that has cast you and the people you love aside time and time again.
And then. When against all odds he blindsides you by entering your life again
You hear your name escape his lips. And in that moment you realize
Maybe being seen for who you really are isn't so bad after all.
Maybe. JUST MAYBE. With time. You could learn to finally drop your facade and live in earnest. To fight for what's right the way he told you he wanted to do.
And it shows on your face. It's shown by your rose-colored cheeks and a shy smile that's impossible for you to hide. And for the first time in several years
You don't feel like you need to.

After Azran Legacy Descole was left with a lot of clothes, personal items, and various souvenir trinkets left behind by the other former passengers of the Bostonious none of which was ever properly retrieved due to the groups sudden parting.
Rather than throwing it all out Descole has been trying to covertly return all items back to their original owners and because it’s Descole he’s probably returning the objects and whatnot in the most complicated way possible over a period of time.
Auroras stuff in particular remains safely stored in a box on the Bostonious.

[ 𝐣𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐬 ] : sender is voicing their negative opinion about a person who appears to be close with the receiver. / bernadetta von varely, as your professor, i feel it's necessary to inform you that I believe Mr. Bearkley is holding you back from your true potential. you're not shooting for the stars. you're not giving it your all, and Mr. Bearkley is enabling this behavior. Think of your untapped potential. Let's put aside our beef and focus on getting you in tip top shape.
* for you i would.
i dont have a fakedeep poetry line caption for this. ive been trying and trying to think and just cannot even make one up. odin dark of norway you have insulted mr bearkley and you simply must perish never mind i got it. uhhh something something you think you're the shit but you aren't even the fart. or how did that one go again? ah fuck never mind. here we go
professor dark is a funny little man. he wears funny flip-flops attached to his pants, he bellows from the thesaurus glued to his lungs, and he strikes poses in public that her mangled corpse could not be caught doing if all the saints and their mothers possessed her right now.
bernadetta has heard the lecture before. she has heard it from seniors and students alike, and the first half of it nearly puts her to sleep. her lips twist down in an affronted curl.
potential this, potential that. some of them mean well—she feels all the more rotten whenever they're kind—but all of them learn. they all eventually learn she's impossible to deal with. stupid, ugly, whiny, worthless. why bother?
they all give up. she is fine with that. she gave up on herself, too, ages ago. bernadetta is fine with slinking back into the shadows, letting herself be forgotten in sweet peace...
...yet when odin dark dares accuse the only friend and confidant she's had for years, her eyes snap open. bernadetta recoils, her arms tightening around the armored bear stuffy as her body half twists to obscure it from the madman.
"what are you talking about?!" the fight in her flares up, a petite spitfire in the fray. feathers ruffled, she quips with a tiny stomp of her foot. "mr. bearkley doesn't have anything to do with this! bernie's stupid and worthless all on her own! you don't know him, or me! so... so there! y-you can eat your fell flip-flops, mister!"
she doesn't mean that, not really. clumsy and rash on occasion as she may be, bernadetta knows—she knows, she knows so much more than she is equipped to convey. she knows she isn't being fair. she knows mr. dark only means well. she regrets every mean thing the second it flies out of her mouth, and it shows in the way her eyes fearfully flinch. but that is mostly all she really knows—she holds her sword by its knife end and wildly, frantically swings.
she freezes like she's been hit, a half-stammer of syllables caught like rocks in her mouth—sorry, i—but no, it's too late. it's always too late. she made her bed and she instantly dives into it. she staggers, she spins in the opposite direction. the rapid patter of bernadetta's boots is the last thing odin hears of her.

As the weird mythology-obsessed kid growing up, I have countless times been disappointed by how little most people know about mythology, even in spaces where I thought people SHOULD know a bit more than the basics. (Namely, college level writing classes. Not just the students, but the teachers. At a top 20 liberal arts college. Literally just. Actual literature professors of mine not knowing relatively known stories like that Aphrodite cheated on Hephaestus with Ares. Reader, I was gobsmacked.)
The fact is, at least in the US, your average person on the street, NOT ON TUMBLR, but I mean like actually outside this bubble, doesn’t know much mythology. They might know Zeus, or Hercules, or “Mighty Aphrodite” based on recent TV shows or the Disney movies or the aforementioned song.
I’m reminded of this XKCD comic which really nails it:
This also applies to mythology. More people than you, the reader of this, probably don’t know who Orpheus and Eurydice are than you might think. Hadestown returned those names to the sort of mainstream and even THAT niche of musical theater is still, well, pretty damn niche.
Thor 3 has Zeus in it, and Hercules, and obviously Thor. But the Thor franchise is wildly inaccurate to actual Norse mythology is probably the biggest influx of mainstream knowledge of mythology where you MIGHT be able to talk to the average person about who, say, Loki is. But it’s doubtful they’d know a single historically accurate myth, unless MAYBE they’d also played God of War. But again, these are still very nerdy niches within the general mainstream culture.
I dunno. Maybe there’s no point to this. Just that sometimes I see people on here, especially in the Sandman fandom, kind of surprised by mythological knowledge not being more widespread. But in my personal experience, even in very nerdy circles, it very often really, REALLY isn’t.

went on a lunch date recently where the guy like. didn't mention what job he did on grindr, just that he'd been working late etc, and then when i got there and mentioned it i asked what he did, and he was like "oh well i work for the police" and i was. immediately shut down, understandably
and later on i asked his opinions abt police brutality, police abuse rates, if he thinks the police should be abolished etc, and later was like, yeah, ethically this is a bad match
but idk like. when ppl tell me they're a cop or a gard (or in the military) on grindr i just block them from the off, bc it's like, well, you're cool w brutality, rape, and abuse, there's no reason you could or should be trusted with an intimate partner. and this guy had mentioned he followed me on twitter and didn't at all seem surprised by my open disgust for his profession, and idk if that was why he didn't mention it up front and thought i wouldn't make a big deal about it (as if) or if he just doesn't mention it to anybody
but i'm still so like ??
like my house has a very explicit no cops policy. if sb else brought their partner or brother or whatever to dinner and they were a cop, they would be told to fucking leave. as if i'm gonna fuck one myself
