Hard to believe Nine Inch Nails' classic The Downward Spiral is 30 years old today! Here is some detail photography I took of the original album cover painting by Russell Mills for the 10th anniversary deluxe edition release, which I had the unique honor of designing, and somehow that is now 20 year old.
Everyone has that one album that hit at just the right moment of adolescence to change their perspective on music and get them through their teenage angst. The Downward Spiral was that album for me, released as it was in 1994, when I was a freshman in high school (and an absolute banner year for music/films/games all around). I must have stared at the artwork for hours over those years, without even much detail to draw from on its tiny 5” CD slip case. So five years later, when I found myself inexplicably working for Nine Inch Nails, it was surreal to see the actual original painting in the flesh, hanging as it was at the time in Trent Reznor’s office at Nothing Studios, New Orleans.
I was struck by how much dimension and texture there was in the artwork that never translated on that tiny slipcase printing, how much detail was happening in the physical materials of the art: Flies, moths, wires, blood… I had been staring at this “painting” for so long, yet suddenly it was like I had never seen it before. I also noticed that it had aged - the wires had wilted over the years, drooping down from their original position as captured in the original album cover (interestingly, judging by the photo posted today by NIN, the piece has since been restored); a tooth was missing from the other main piece.
That experience stuck with me and it was the first thing I thought about when the task of re-imagining the album package fell upon me in 2004. I wanted to re-photograph the artwork, subtly updating the cover to show that ten years had changed it physically, much like our perceptions of art and music and memories change over time with perspective. I also wanted to dig into the previously unseen details of the work and explore it with my macro lens, so that fans like me, old and new, could have new layers of texture to pore over for hours while listening to a legendary album.
Happy birthday, old friend.

In honor of their 10th anniversary, Waxwork Records has re-pressed their first release: the Re-Animator soundtrack. Priced at $32, the score is composed by Richard Band (From Beyond, Puppet Master).
The album is pressed on 180-gram hand-poured color vinyl. It's housed in a gatefold jacket with artwork by Gary Pullin, liner notes by Band and director Stuart Gordon, printed inner sleeves, and a 12x18 poster.
In addition to celebrating their anniversary, this release marks the first album made at Waxwork’s new, in-house vinyl pressing plant.

Remembering #JuthikaRoy on her 10th death anniversary (05/02/14), the iconic bhajan vocalist celebrated as the modern-day #Meera during the pre-independence era. Renowned for her soul-stirring Meerabai bhajans such as "Ghunghat ke pat khol" and "Pag Ghunghru Baandh Meera Naachi Re," Juthika Roy carved a niche for herself in the hearts of many.
Her melodious renditions won the hearts of Hindi and Bengali cinema audiences alike, making her a celebrated figure in her time. Her voice captivated notable personalities, including Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, who were avid admirers of her work.
On the historic day of August 15, 1947, as Nehru journeyed from Teen Murti Bhavan to the Red Fort to mark India's independence, Roy's bhajans filled the air, broadcast live by All India Radio. After her performance, at Nehru's request, she continued to sing until the national flag was hoisted, adding a memorable soundtrack to a pivotal moment in India's history.
In her reflections, Roy shared an anecdote about Sarojini Naidu revealing how Gandhi found solace in her bhajans during his incarceration in Pune, making her music an integral part of his daily prayer meetings. She even had the honor of performing privately for Gandhi at his residence.
Embarking on her musical journey at just 12 years old with her first album, Roy was mentored by the renowned rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. Her collaborations with the esteemed Bengali music director Kamal Dasgupta, especially the revered Narayan stuti "Narayan Shriman Narayan," continue to resonate with listeners.
Roy's versatile talent extended beyond Hindi and Bengali, as she lent her voice to songs in various languages, including Urdu and Tamil.
On February 5, 2014, the music world lost this luminary in Kolkata after a long illness. As we commemorate her legacy, we hope for her soul to find everlasting peace.

Happy Anniversary to 'Citizens of Boomtown'!
Tumblr media
Released on March 13th, 2020 'Citizens of Boomtown' is the seventh studio album by The Boomtown Rats.
The album is notable for being the first new Rats album in 36 years, as the group had been disbanded for several decades before being reunited by guitarist Garry Roberts in 2013. Neither keyboardist Johnnie Fingers nor guitarist Gerry Cott returned for the new album, leaving the Rats to record for the first time as a four-piece band (with additional support from Darren Beale and Alan Dunn).
Tumblr media
Although the original tour plans were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, The Boomtown Rats rescheduled their performances for the fall of 2021 with the tour concluding at the London Palladium on October 14th.
Following the tour, the Rats released the 'Citizens of Boomtown: Deluxe Edition' on April 29th, 2022. This expanded version included six new tracks originally intended for the COB album, one new remix, and four live tracks recorded at the London Palladium.
Unfortunately 'Citizens of Boomtown' would also end up being the final studio album to feature guitarist Garry Roberts, who sadly passed away on November 8th, 2022 at the age of 72.
The Boomtown Rats would later release 'There's No Tomorrow Like Today (The Legend Mix)' on February 10th, 2023 in honor of Garry, who was called "The Legend" by fans.

Joey Bada$$ - 2000 ALBUM REVIEW
Tumblr media
In the five years since the release of his last album, Joey Bada$$ hadn’t been as active as he usually is. Aside from his contributions to the Beast Coast album and the 3-song Light Pack EP back in 2020, Joey has been busy with other things outside of music. He had a daughter and continued his acting career, appearing in the first season of Wu-Tang: An American Saga, one of the Power spinoff shows, and the film Two Distant Strangers which won an Oscar. 2022 not only marks the release of Joey’s third album but also the 10th anniversary of his first mixtape 1999, which his new album’s title is a nod too. Though the cover and title are a nod to Joey’s beginnings, 2000 is definitely not a sequel to 1999 but instead marks the decade of Joey’s successful rap career. It’s much more polished in terms of production choices and mixing as this is a studio album full of original production mostly from longtime collaborator Statik Selektah who has produced a lot of Joey’s best music. The production is great and works well for Joey like always but the lyricism shines extremely bright on this album, which is also typical for a Joey Bada$$ album. Songs like Make Me Feel, Where I Belong, and Zipcodes sound like classic Joey. In terms of lyrical content, he spends most of the album reflecting on the past ten years, both in terms of his success but also sharing life experiences that happened along the way as well as honoring those close to him that lost, including Pro Era member Capital STEEZ and his cousin Junior B, who he dedicates the incredible Survivors Guilt to. Joey has mentioned Steez on many songs before, including #LONGLIVESTEELO but this song is easily the most vulnerable he has ever been about losing his close friend and family member. The beat is gorgeous and the hook is sung simply yet so beautifully as he says, “this one is for you.” He talks about missing his loved ones who came up with him and feeling guilty for being successful without them. It is moments like this song that we have been waiting for from Joey. The song Head High is also one of the better songs on the album, which he dedicates a verse to XXXTentacion as he tells a story of how their friendship came to be. I also love the hook on this one as he raps “This for my n****s who took the time to relax / huggin’ their block but the block ain’t hug ‘em back.” While a lot of this album is very reflective and introspective, he enjoys his successes on the album too on songs like Brand New 911 where Westside Gunn joins him for a verse and adds his amazing “BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM” adlibs to the track. There is also the song One Of Us with Larry June which I love the vocal sample on. While I love a good amount of this album as it sounds like the Joey we know and love, there are some dull moments like the intro with Diddy as well as Welcome Back with Chris Brown and Capella Grey which could have been cut from the album. That song really did not fit well with the album. I think the same thing about the hook on Cruise Control, though I do like the verses and the production. While 2000 accomplishes its goals of documenting Joey’s life since the release of 1999 back in 2012, it only somewhat meets my expectations. I am satisfied with the classic Joey Bada$$ wordplay and production choices and love the more personal songs on the album, the quality of the album as a whole doesn’t really hold a candle to his other albums. Besides that opinion which isn’t much of an actual criticism, I think that when you don’t compare it to anything and judge my own enjoyment of the album, it is really good and I am happy that Joey is back. 2000 isn’t anything groundbreaking but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. Joey is now in a very interesting part of his career as he has been in music for 10 years but is still only 27 years old. He has lived a whole rap career but is not even 30, making it seem as though he is only just getting started. 2000 seems like a major milestone for him, which is exciting because he is so young but has been rapping too long to be lumped in with the younger generation of rappers. 2000 is a very good album when you keep that in mind and enjoy the music for what it is and his reflective songs make a big impact for longtime Joey Bada$$ fans.
Fav Tracks: Make Me Feel, Eulogy, One Of Us, Head High, Survivors Guilt

Frankie Knuckles' Record Collection Has Been Digitized
Tumblr media
House music pioneer Frankie Knuckles' collection of 5,000 vinyl albums has been digitized. The job was completed on the 10th anniversary of his passing by members of the Theaster Gates Rebuild Foundation. Knuckles made house music a cultural force as the DJ at Chicago's Warehouse Club and then the Power Plant during the '70s and '80s. He was also responsible for remixing songs under Def Mix Productions with David Morales including "Change" by Lisa Stansfield. In 1991, his first album, Beyond The Mix came out and contained his signature tune "The Whistle Song." He won the Grammy Award for Remixer of the Year Non-Classical in 1998 before the award was given for a specific work. Frederick Dunson, the founder, president, and executive director of the Frankie Knuckles Foundation said, “Frankie was not just a maestro on the dance floor; he was a guiding force, infusing his artistry with purpose and connection. Today, we honor his lasting influence and express our deepest respect for the unforgettable mark he left on Chicago and the world.”
Knuckles's record collection will be used to educate the public about house music and for the Sunday Service dance parties at the Stony Island Arts Bank which Gates' Rebuild Foundation restored.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of Beyoncé’s iconic, self-titled album. To honor this momentous occasion, Beyoncé has released ‘GROWN WOMAN’ on all DSPs, today at 12 pm ET. Beyonce’ alluded to this special date by posting a teaser on socials yesterday. ‘GROWN WOMAN’ originally appeared as a bonus video for the Platinum Edition of BEYONCÉ released in 2014, but it never made its way to streaming…

Album Reviews: Speedy Ortiz "Major Arcana (10th Anniversary Edition)" / The Kinks
This week I got to review some cool reissue albums from very different eras.
Speedy Ortiz Major Arcana (10th Anniversary Edition)
Hard to believe indie rockers Speedy Ortiz have been a band for over a decade and now are celebrating ten years since their first full length album was released. The quartet were formed in Northampton, MA and are now in Philadelphia. My #5 Best Concert of 2019 was Speedy Ortiz when they did an Indie617 show at McGann’s Pub. Such a great show and afterwards the band signed my vinyl copy of their album Twerp Verse, which I named an Honorable Mention for Best Album of the 2010s. In 2021 I got to review the reissue of their album The Death of Speedy Ortiz & Cop Kicker…Forever. In 2022 I saw them headline the Nice a Fest festival. Earlier this Fall, I got review the band's newest studio album Rabbit Rabbit. Now to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their debut album Major Arcana is being re-released by Carpark Records this week.
Tumblr media
album cover
Originally released on July 9, 2013, the band was already creating a buzz with their demo albums The Death of Speedy Ortiz and Copy Kicker as well as the EP Sports. I remember hearing a lot about the band at the time, not just in Boston press, but nationally as well. I checked out the album online and dug what I heard. For one reason or another, I never picked up Major Arcana, until now. This is an interesting album to re-visit in 2023 because singer / songwriter / guitarist Sadie DuPuis is the only member from the 2013 lineup still in the band. Guitarist Matt Robidoux, bassist Darl Ferm and drummer Mike Falcone who made up the lineup of this 2013 album, were a solid band, it's just that I'm partial to the lineup they've had since 2019 since I've seen that lineup live. But I digress. Major Arcana isn't the best album by Speedy Ortiz, but it marks a band announcing themselves as they got started. DuPuis is a clever songwriter both with Speedy Ortiz and with her solo project Sad13 (just check out her album Haunted Painting for proof). I think both Twerp Verse and Rabbit Rabbit are stronger albums as a whole, but the debut is worth re-visiting.

The Kinks The Journey Part 2
In celebration of the 60th anniversary of British Invasion faves The Kinks, earlier this year saw the release of The Journey Part 1 (read my review here). BMG is releasing the follow up this week, The Journey Part 2. Part 1 traced the band's music from 1964 to 1975. Part 2 does not go from 1976 onward as I had hoped, instead it is further listening from 1965-1975.
Tumblr media
album cover
Much like Part 1, this double album is curated by themes. I got to review the double LP vinyl edition (there's various formats). Side 1 is "The world around the journeyman starts to crumble as his life is turned upside down". Side 2 is "The journeyman is led astray by ghosts and a dark angel". Side 3 is "Our journeyman is seduced by those ghosts and demons of the underworld and searches for his lost innocence". Side 4 is "Despair turn to elation as journeyman overcomes his fear. Reunites with old friends." The songs sound fantastic and the curation is key. There clearly was an art to this assemblage of songs rather than chronology or rockers on one side and ballads on another. I think this is a great compilation on it's own with killer liner notes, but the problem for me is that I had wanted it to be a compilation of their mid 70s to mid 80s work and instead it's a deeper dive into the same exact era as Part 1. Clearly their work in the 60s and 70s is what people remember most, but I'm interested in the next chapter now. Bring on Part 3!

Kelontae Gavin became a viral sensation as a teenager back in 2014, after a recording of him singing Reverend Paul Jones’ Gospel classic “I Won’t Complain” in his high school cafeteria went viral. With multiple #1 hits on Billboard and Mediabase Gospel charts, he has continued to be a sought-after, acclaimed live singer, songwriter and worship leader, bringing a fresh voice and insight to all his performances. He has released two full-length albums The N.O.W. Experience and The Higher Experience. At only 24 years old, Kelontae has already won a Stellar Award, received two Dove Award nominations as well as over 55 million audio streams and his career shows no signs of slowing down. Coming up almost 10 years since that viral video changed his life, earlier this year during his birthday Kelontae wanted to reflect on that upcoming anniversary, with a surprise birthday blessing to celebrate the cafeteria worker Kimberly who he sung to that day, revisiting his former high school with her (check out his story here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CqZBkSDh7Z-/?hl=en). Next up, Kelontae Gavin continues a busy schedule of appearances this spring and summer across the country. He will be performing live at the 8th Annual Black Music Honors, taping May 19th at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, GA. Tickets are available now at: https://blackmusichonors.com. The TV special will premiere on the Stellar Network on June 3rd, and air throughout June in national broadcast syndication in tribute to Black Music Month (airs June 10th-July 2nd, check local listings), as well as air on Bounce TV on June 19th. Kelontae will be leading a 5-Day Worship School Challenge online, May 22nd-26th, check out more information and join the challenge at: https://worshipschoolweek.com/.
