On The Prowl - The Tiger‘s eye. Up close and personal.⁠ ⁠ Explore the incredible details in his eye with the beautiful fur pattern on the face. When this majestic tiger passed our vehicle, I was able to take this close-up photo of his eye. Bengal tigers are the largest animals in the big cat family globally. However, African lions come close to the size of the tigers. Due to poaching and habitats decline, these wild animals are indeed an endangered species. Bengal Tiger Eye Bengal tiger eyes have a binocular vision to judge the distance to their prey. During the day, they can see nearly as much as humans. That is quite impressive compared to other animals. It is also not necessary for their purpose. To see three-dimensional perception and depth perception is the primary function. Tigers mainly hunt during the night due to their excellent night vision. They see about six times better than humans at night. As you see in this photograph, the round pupil allows a maximum of light to enter the eye at night. During the day, they as well see colors. Cheetahs coming to India In India, the cheetah population used to be fairly widespread. The cheetah is believed to have disappeared from the Indian landscape in 1947 when Maharaja Ramanuj Pratap Singh Deo of Koriya princely state hunted down and shot the last three recorded Asiatic cheetahs in India. The cheetah was officially declared extinct by the Indian government in 1952. Over 70 years after it went extinct in India, the cheetah will return to the country on Saturday, September 17, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. Eight African cheetahs from Namibia — five females and three males between the ages of 4-6 years — will be flown 8,000 km over the Indian ocean to the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, where they will be released as part of India’s Rs 90-crore Cheetah Introduction project. These photographs make me sad, and I will tell you why in a minute. We had just started our morning safari in Ranthambore. It had rained all night, followed by clear skies and promise of a golden morning. As soon as we entered the park, these were these fresh leopard marks that got us hooked. Somewhere near us, there was a leopard taking the morning walk. So we followed the pug-marks to a nearby hillock and behold! There was this leopard walking right in front of us. The light was perfect, the background was perfect and all I had to do was pick up my camera and go clicking. Here comes my reason of the grief. For most of the time the leopard walked on the gravel path in front of us. Then just before disappearing in the slope below, it stopped, and turned its head to look at us in the eyes, all for one second. In that moment of perfection, I messed up. That photograph, for me, came out of focus. I don’t remember being this dejected for a very long time. Every time I look at these photographs, they reminded me of that one shot which I missed. Not sure if another chance like that will ever come again. I know it is petty, but thats how it is.
