Can't Hold Back
AN: Hey y'all! This is kind of an unofficial sequel to Down Time, in the sense that I was thinking of while writing but made no actual references to it lol. ANYWAY. This was written for @triplefrontier-anniversary! Hope y’all enjoy 🥰
(Un-beta’d)
You can’t go on like this, having him but not having him. You want more, you deserve more…
Rated: M+ (this is smut so, i mean, you’ve been warned?) Words: 1,554 Pairing: Santiago “Pope” Garcia x F!Reader Warnings: Very light on the plot here lol, friends (who are secretly in love with each other) with benefits, p in v, a smidge of angst then cliche fluffy fluff (please let me know if i missed anything). AO3
——————
Santiago fucks into you, his thrusts slow and deep, his body draped over yours as you cling to him, your bottom lip caught between your teeth as you try to stifle your moans. He buries his face in your neck, muffling his groan as he loses himself in your warmth. He mouths at you, his tongue dragging over your sweat-slicked skin before coming to rest just below your ear.
“Feel so good, cariño,” he slurs, his voice low and raspy. “Feels like heaven when I’m inside you.”
Your cunt clenches at his words and he grunts, his movements stuttering slightly. Your chest heaves in an effort to stay quiet, knowing your friends are sleeping just on the other side of the thin walls of your shared vacation rental. They didn’t know about you and Santi, didn’t know that you’d been secretly fucking for months, didn’t know that you were head-over-heels in love with him.
To be fair though, Santi didn’t know that last bit either.
Your arrangement had been fun when it started, had scratched the proverbial itch, but as time had gone on, you’d started to want more. The sex was great, but you hated when it ended. Not just because it was over, but because one of you always left. That had been part of the arrangement: no staying the night. So you didn’t, he didn’t, and you ignore that ache you feel in your chest every time he rolls off your bed and starts putting on his clothes, ignore the queasiness that roils in your belly when he leans in and kisses the side of your head gently in goodbye, ignore the way your heart cracks as the door to your apartment clicks shut and you’re left in silence, alone.
You’d been planning to tell him, tell him that you couldn’t do this anymore, that you wanted (needed) more, more with him…but then he’d started kissing you and every other thought had flown right out the window. So here you were, writhing in pleasure beneath him as he played your body like a well-loved instrument, willing yourself to stay quiet so as to not alert the rest of your friend group. You shiver, his lips brushing your ear as he whispers the filthiest things. The sound of his voice, coupled with his words, pushes you higher and higher, and you whimper softly as you near the edge, your cunt fluttering around his cock.
Santi shushes you gently, pulling back a little to watch you, his dark eyes heavy and blown wide with lust. Your gaze locks with his, and you swallow hard to keep your moans at bay, your lips parting and releasing a soft, strangled sound. He pulls his lip between his teeth, nostrils flaring as he breathes hard through his nose, his body moving steadily over you.
As you watch him, the moonlight illuminating him from behind like an angel, you’re struck with the urge to cry. No, not just cry, full on sob. You can’t go on like this, having him but not having him. You want more, you deserve more…but you’re worried. Worried about how ending this will affect your friendship, that you’ll have to put up with seeing him date other women (or worse, that he won’t care when you start dating). You want to be present, be in the moment, want to enjoy yourself if this really is to be the last time. Even so, you can’t stop the tears as they slide down your cheeks, can’t stop the weight pressing on your chest, can’t stop the fracturing of your heart. A strange combination of euphoria and sorrow war within you, and you can’t do much more than ride it out, can’t do much more than cling to him like it’s the last time you’ll ever hold him (because it likely is).
He must notice your crying because he suddenly leans in, whispering comforting words that don’t really register in your brain as he kisses away your tears. He presses his forehead to yours, pushing you closer and closer to your peak, grinding his hips into yours and making you see stars.
You whimper softly as you come, your body shaking, eyes fluttering shut as the pleasure washes over you. Santiago leans in, smothering his moans in your neck as you squeeze him, pulling him closer to the edge until his body stiffens, his sticky warmth coating your inner walls. The urge to wrap yourself around him, to keep him with you, keep him inside you, is so strong, but you resist, knowing it won’t make a difference.
Santi pulls back, smiling softly as he gazes down at you. You try to smile back, thankful for the darkness of the room as it means he can’t see the tears that are still leaking from the corners of your eyes. He swipes his thumbs over your cheeks and pauses, his lips twitching down when he feels the wetness there.
“Estás bien, cariño?” he whispers, his eyes quickly darting over your face. “I didn’t hurt you, did I?”
You shake your head, willing your tears to stop falling.
“I’m okay,” you say, forcing a smile, “Just emotional, I guess.”
He grunts, and you can tell he’s not buying it. You never were very good at lying.
You do your best not to look at him for too long, knowing the longer he looks, the more likely it is that he’ll see, see it all, everything you’re trying to hide, trying to bury. Just when you think he’s going to let it go, you feel his hand cup your cheek.
“Look at me,” he whispers, his breath fanning across your cheek.
You try not to, really you do but, when it comes to Santi, you just can’t help yourself.
Your resolve crumbles the moment your eyes meet his, the words you’ve held back all these months spilling from between your lips like water from a broken dam. Tears blur your vision so much that you can’t really tell what effect your words are having on him, but you suppose that it doesn’t really matter in the end. You can feel yourself spiraling, your chest heaving with barely suppressed sobs, when Santi’s finger presses against your lips halts your descent.
“Did…you just say you loved me?” he asks softly, his voice and face unreadable.
Icy dread slices through you at the question. Had you said that? That you loved him? You don’t remember, but you must’ve, right? You panic, stuttering as you try to explain, your brain racing a million miles per hour as you search for the right words…but it turns out you don’t need them.
Santiago stops your lips again, this time with his own.
You’ve kissed him a thousand times before now but, somehow this time it’s different, this time it feels different. He takes his time, his kiss somehow both gentle and deep, like he’s pouring everything he has into it. He pulls away before you can kiss him back, a faint glimmer of something unfamiliar shining in his eyes when he meets yours again.
“I love you too,” he rasps, smiling down at you softly.
Your eyes widen a little, searching for the truth of his words in the darkness. “You do?”
He chuckles, caressing your cheeks with his thumbs. “I do.”
You exhale sharply, a relieved laugh slipping from between your lips before you can stop it. You clap your hand over your mouth in surprise as Santiago’s smile widens, his eyes shining. You spend the next few hours wrapped in each other’s arms, talking about everything and nothing, content to just be.
You wake hours later to the sun streaming in through the windows and Santiago’s warmth at your back, your still-naked bodies tangled in the sheets and blankets. His arms are wrapped loosely around you, his face pressed into the back of your neck, and you can’t help the mix of relief and giddiness you feel knowing it wasn’t all some crazy fever dream. Your eye lashes flutter as sleep tries to call you back, the warm tendrils reaching for you, pulling gently—
Until the sound of someone clearing their throat drags you back to full consciousness.
Your head snaps toward the sound, your widened eyes meeting amused blue ones.
Santi stirs behind you, sighing softly as he presses a kiss against the base of your neck and rasps, “Morning.”
“Mornin’,” Benny responds, a smug smile on his lips as he takes in the sight of the two of you tangled in each other.
You feel Santi pause briefly before turning to meet his gaze.
“Breakfast is gettin’ cold,” Benny continues, suggestively pumping his eyebrows as he backs out of the room, leaving the door wide open.
Benny walks back to the kitchen, his footsteps thunking loudly against the wooden floor of the house as he calls out something about the other guys owing him a hundred dollars.
Santi snorts behind you, pushing his face against your shoulder as he dissolves into laughter, and you can’t help but follow suit.
“Guess we should go deal with that,” you chuckle, looking over your shoulder at him.
He smiles, his eyes shining with laughter as he leans in and presses a kiss to your lips. “Guess we should, cariño.”

i feel like #11 from the physical guestures list would fit rulti...maybe swiss trying to distract rain while he's restringing his bass?
any inaccuracies about restringing basses are on me, I was a percussionist and the last time I touched a string instrument was like 14 years ago and god knows they wouldn't have let me restring a rental violin lmao. Hope you enjoy!
prompt from this prompt list: placing kisses on your lovers shoulder and nape as they are bent down, trying to focus on their work though they're very hot and bothered
Tumblr media
"Hand me the knife, honey?" Rain asks, not looking up as he extends a hand, focused on the fretboard of his personal bass. He sits on the edge of his bed, dressed casually in a black binder and basketball shorts, hair loose and falling against his shoulders.
Swiss hums, pulling his utility knife out of his pocket, flipping open the wire cutters, and setting it gently in Rain's palm. He's sprawled out on his back, lounging on Rain's bed in a similar state of dress, watching Rain work.
He loosens each string, fingers almost reverent on the tuning peg as each string goes slack, clipping it near the pickups and carefully unwinding it from the guitar. Once the fretboard is bare, he grabs a cloth he had set aside, cleaning the guitar with gentle, back and forth motions.
Swiss whistles low, gold eyes lazily tracking the up and down motions of Rain's hand, wrapped around the neck of his bass as he cleans the fretboard. Rain snaps out of his reverie, looking over his shoulder at the multighoul, an easy grin twisting his lips. "Alright, enough, you guitarfucker," Rain teases, laughter spilling into his tone as he smacks Swiss's shoulder with the rag.
Swiss scoffs, matching Rain's grin. "I'm sorry I'm bored and I find you attractive, Rainbow."
Rain rolls his eyes, but he's still smiling softly. "You and I both know that you're not sorry. Be patient and I'll give you attention."
Swiss grins wider, baring his bright white fangs as he crosses his arms behind his head. "You promise, Rainy?"
"Yes, you needy, needy ghoul," Rain says, jabbing his webbed fingers into Swiss's flank, making the multighoul squeal in laughter. "Let me finish this and then you'll get your attention."
Swiss settles back against the mattress as Rain turns back to his bass, starting to thread the new strings through the bridge. Rain lips are pursed as he focuses, the tip of his forked tongue peeking out from his lips, an adorable little furrow in his brow as his hair hangs in his face.
Swiss stares, watching the water ghoul's expression as he works. He sighs as his gaze trails down to Rain's shoulders, bare blue skin spattered with silver, iridescent freckles. On impulse, Swiss sits up behind him, resting his big, warm hands on the cool blue skin of Rain's waist, thighs bracketing Rain's own.
"Patience," Rain says, not even bothering to look back at him as Swiss's body heat rushes into his system.
"I'm being patient, Rainy," Swiss promises, even as he bends down to press a kiss to one of the silvery freckles on Rain's shoulder.
Rain chuckles, pausing his work to run his fingers over Swiss's tight curls as he starts to press a kiss to each freckle. "This doesn't seem very patient to me, Swiss."
Swiss laughs, the sound melodic, his lips right against Rain's finned ear. "I'm not stopping you, Rainbow."
Rain shivers as his breath hits his fin, ear twitching against his hair. Swiss noses against the blue black waves as his kisses migrate to the nape of his neck. "Swiss," Rain breathes, warning in his tone.
"Tell me to stop, Rainbow, and I swear I will," Swiss says, lips pressed to the back of Rain's neck, breathing in the scent of his tea-tree shampoo.
There's no response, and Swiss just grins against Rain's skin, teeth pressed harmlessly against that first vertebrae, the spade of his tail smacking against the rumpled bedspread. Rain huffs, turning back to his bass, laid out precious in his lap, and continues restringing it.
Swiss grins even wider as Rain's tail curls slowly around his thigh. He purrs, chest rumbling against Rain's spine, his dorsal fin pressed against Swiss's warm skin. Swiss lets go of Rain's lithe waist, instead wrapping his arms around the water ghoul, careful not to knock into his arms as he works. He trails his kisses around the side of Rain's throat, kissing just at the edge of one of his sensitive gills, and Rain swears.
"Swiss, the longer it takes me to finish this, the longer it'll be before I can give you my undivided attention," Rain says, starting to thread the last string in place.
Swiss laughs again, rubbing his stubbled cheek gently against Rain's gills, grinning as he feels the gust of breath from Rain's throat and hooking his chin over Rain's shoulder. "Take your time, Rainbow. I like watching you work."
Rain hums, tilting his head to press his cheek against Swiss's horn, tightening the tuning key and plucking at the thinnest metal string, humming a note and trying to match pitch.
"You're sharp," Swiss breathes, humming slightly lower.
Rain rolls his eyes, knocking his horn against Swiss's as he loosens the key. "Show off. Not all of us can have perfect pitch."
Swiss just grins. "Trying to be helpful."
"And I appreciate it," Rain says, finding the right pitch, plucking the string several times. "I trust your judgment."
He nuzzles against Swiss's cheek as he finishes up, handing the multighoul back his utility knife.
"You done?" he asks, smile growing brighter as Rain pushes at his arms.
"Let me up, Swiss, gotta put her back," Rain says, successfully getting the multighoul to let go of him as he stands, taking his bass in gentle hands and setting it back on its stand.
Swiss's tail wags rapidly as Rain turns back towards him, smile easy as he stands between Swiss's legs. He cups Swiss's cheeks in his hands, smoothing a thumb over his stubble as the multighoul grins up at him. "Is it time for attention now?" Swiss teases, turning his head to kiss at the webbing between Rain's unglamored fingers.
"Yes, you needy ghoul," Rain says, shivering as he kisses the sensitive membrane. "You have all of my attention. Kiss me."
Swiss surges up, eager to oblige.

It’s official! My rental spot at Boheme Shops in Pittsburgh will start on January 1st! I know most of you aren’t local, but I’ve been waiting on this spot since at least August, and thankfully I was able to secure a small spot near the register instead of having to be in an unfinished back room. It’s basically a co-op, so I rent my display space and they only take 10% + the credit card fee, so it gives me a lot more financial room to grow. It’s small, but good enough for me until I can start producing more.

(Pic on the left is my friend’s space who I do collab pieces with!)
In light of all that, my Etsy will still be open so please still visit it and help support me growing so I don’t have to do other jobs! The only caveat might be double-checking if statues are available at the time of purchase, but I can easily pop over and check inventory at the shop.
Things will be a lot different in 2023 as I manage this space, a new job and more markets - but y’all have definitely been instrumental in keeping me afloat. I’m broke, but I’m still trying for what it’s worth 🥲

XII. Employ (Dowdy)
contains light references to the Endwalker Ranged DPS quests.
The rush of the waters outside the Roost were different, but familiar enough to Yugiri to make her feel at home, sitting on the dip in the rock, lying in Etien’s lap (positioned carefully as regarded her horns). She hated to break this peace, this happy silence, but there was an important matter she wanted to bring up before time ran out.
“Etien.”
“Yes, my comet?”
She laughed at the term of endearment. “My next endeavor is taking me to Alder Springs.”
“Oh.” There was a tense quiet as Etien sucked her lip into her mouth in thought. “I’ll still come with you.”
“Are you certain? You have been hesitant to set foot there for so long, and I would not want you to go back on such a firmly-held rule for me.”
“I am. Sure, I mean.” After a moment, she let out a dry bark of a laugh. “Looks like the time has come for me to repay the favor done by the shinobi in the viscountess’s employ, hmm?” When Yugiri’s eyebrows lifted in understanding of the reference and curiosity about ‘repayment’, Etien went on. “My idea is this—you are one of the representatives of Doma, come exploring the Black Shroud on a break from Alliance meetings. I am your companion and entertainer, brought to Doma from Eorzea half my life ago for my skills as a bard, but here now to guide and chaperon you.”
Yugiri sat up. “My mother recognized me with my face completely obscured, are you not concerned your family will do the same?”
An odd expression took over Etien’s face. “It feels vain to say, but my family has known me to be a fanciful, if unique, dresser. If I wear something dowdy and style my hair differently than usual, I think it should be far enough from their memory of me or any depictions of the Warrior if Light.”
“What about your voice?”
“If I only speak in Doman, the Ishgardian accent should cover me.”
“Ah.” Now Yugiri smiled. “You have clearly thought deeply about this.”
Etien threaded their hands together. “I wanted to be ready if I ever needed to do what you’ve done for me.”
It didn’t take long for Etien to get changed, and she styled her hair as they stood near the Chocobo rental.
“I believed you all along, but I am surprised nonetheless—you look utterly unrecognizable,” Yugiri remarked as Etien pulled her hair up into a conservative updo, holding it in place with a decorative metal stick made to look like a lance. “What are those clothes?”
“Well, I bought this boxy dalmatica by mistake a while ago, and I have it on over shepherding leggings.”
They shared a crinkled-nosed expression of mirth.
“I also have a flute, if my lady would like a song,” Etien said, brandishing the small instrument.
“You are already making my heart sing,” Yugiri told her, taking her hand before they mounted their Chocobos to ride north.

hi!! i was wondering if u had any recommendations for schools to be a luthier??? ive gained an interest bc of you and now im actually considering pursuing it but im not sure how to go about that. sorry to bother and thank u in advance!!
omg such flattery 🥰🥰 so there are 3 accredited, full-time violin making schools in the states: one in salt lake city, chicago, and boston! (more info below the cut :p)
they're all trade schools, so not university affiliated, which means acceptance tends to rely more heavily on the space available and personal statements/interest expressed. there are part time programs too that are at colleges/universities that i've heard of, but i've forgotten the names.. you come out with a degree, but tbh degrees aren't really of much importance in this line of work, from what i understand.
its a pretty big leap to make considering the time and tuition commitment, (the tuition.... oh man the tuition) so i would definitely recommend finding a luthier near you and asking them about their background and experience. for a lot of people who just want to repair and work locally, starting with some background shop skills/woodworking and then finding an apprenticeship with a maker is all that's necessary--at the end of the day, your work speaks for itself. i do think going to a school will provide the most comprehensive education in both modern technique and historic making tho, and will open up a lot of possibilities in terms of breadth of skill and community ties. (for reference, out of my 3 coworkers this summer, 2 went to chicago and 1 went to boston... make of that what you will)
i'm not sure what your background is in music/instruments, but if possible, finding a rental shop near you and asking if you can help out would be a helpful step in seeing if its something you want to do! that's essentially what i'm doing this summer, instrument set-up and assisting with repairs.. a lot of it can just be taught on the job, and rental shops are usually super busy in the summers.
that being said !! i've heard my teacher say before that he prefers students to come in to the program with no history of violin making, since its easier to teach a blank slate than to unteach bad habits. as someone who started school with no background knowledge whatsoever an anything besides playing, i can say that he's probably right, but a background knowledge of woodworking and/or tools would've been a huge benefit just in terms of vocabulary and familiarity.
i feel like i should add that i literally only have knowledge of the us, so if you're looking for info of diff countries lmk; i can definitely crowdsource an answer lolol. but if ur interested in the school names/comparisons of the schools, feel free to dm me!! its not hard to google but i also like..... probably shouldn't put the name of my school on blast so readily for anyone to see aha
i hope this was helpful, sorry for the super lengthy response !! <333

Today’s compilation:
25 Oldies Best Vol. 7 1995 Pop-Rock / Hard Rock / Pop / Soft Rock / Beat
Back in 1995, there was this Swiss label called Block Buster (not to be confused with the video rental chain that we all hold near and dear to our hearts) that put out a 16-volume series called 25 Oldies Best, and I can't say that I really grasp what the grand, unifying theme to that whole venture was, because, judging by its seventh installment, it really just feels like a tranche of random tunes from the 50s through mid-80s. Like, a couple of them were really big hits, like KC and the Sunshine Band's "Please Don't Go," which hit #1 in the States in 1979 and then was subsequently transformed into a pair of sweet, very similar Eurodance jams in the early 90s by Double You and KWS. But then there's three Bee Gees songs on here from the early 60s (did you even know that the Bee Gees were around back then?!) that sound very blasé and don't feature any of their famed falsettos (Weak!). Evidently, they were just a fledglingly generic pop and pop-rock band back then. And then there's Eric Clapton's first solo single, "A Certain Girl," on here too, and it also doesn't sound like anything too special and it also sounds like parts of it were re-recorded. I mean, why exactly does this album even exist?!
BUT, sometimes this seeming randomness has a way of turning up some gold; I have no idea what the song's provenance is, but there's a mostly instrumental recording by Jimi Hendrix on this album called "Good Times" that features him jamming out in a studio and it's easily one of the best tunes on here. It seems like a cut that's kinda rare!
Ultimately though, I really don't know what the selling point of this was. It's lined with recognizable names, but most of these songs aren't recognizable themselves, and that mostly appears to be for good reason. Why someone would decide to package all this mediocrity together is totally beyond me.
A lot of legendary acts crammed into this disc, and like you've probably never heard before!
Highlights:
Tom Robinson - "2-4-6-8 Motorway" KC and the Sunshine Band - "Please Don't Go" Jimi Hendrix - "Good Times" Ike & Tina Turner - "Philadelphia Freedom"

01•06/07•24 - Vegas ❤️🖤♠️♦️
For Shane's birthday, I gave him tickets to the Raiders vs Broncos game at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas. Since tickets were so expensive, I just got two thinking that Brayden and Dad could just go, since those are their two teams, and that I could just tag along to Vegas for a little weekend trip.
The game was two months out but came up quick with the busy holiday season to pass the time! We flew down late Friday night, and had a pretty terrible experience picking up our rental car. The line was unbelievably long, and there was only one working agent to help people. And as we all know, each check-in process seems to take 10 minutes. It was not fun. So we didn't make it to our hotel until after midnight. We picked up some snacks at the hotel store to eat before going to bed.
On Saturday, we all slept-in, and then started our day with breakfast before going over to the outlet malls. I always like to stop at the Kate Spade outlet when I'm in Vegas to update my purse, and I found a cute one this year! The deals can't be beat. We also all picked up some game-day wear while we were there, and Dad got some jellybeans from the candy store haha.
We made a quick trip out to see the Seven Magic Mountains, since B and dad have both never been there. It was windy and cold, and also busy, but fun to get out there again. I was expecting a relief from the cold with this trip - but no. The wind was icy cold, and that was not fun.
Finally, we stopped at a local record store in hopes of finding some cool vinyl, but in a shocking turn of events, neither of us were successful.
The best part of our day was the Sphere Experience - Postcard from Earth. Everyone has been talking about the new giant sphere that was installed right off the Strip. The exterior visuals are crazy, and I'd heard that the inside was even cooler. So this was a priority show for me!
Walking up close to it gives you a better idea of just how many lights make up the outside of the sphere, and it really is amazing. Once we were inside, the first hour was just free time to walk around and look at the exhibits. They have robots that you can have conversations with, a system that takes a full body scan of you to make a video using your Avatar, and a cool targeted sound experience where as you walk across the floor you hear different individual instruments in isolation, and that was super cool.
Then it was time for the show! I wasn't totally sure what to expect, but the story was about a couple who had been sent to start a new life on another planet, and were being reminded what it was like on Earth. So it goes through some amazing footages of different locations and wildlife during this process! But the screen was the biggest and most detailed picture screen I've ever seen, and it was totally all-encompassing. I was amazed.
And that was a wrap on day 1! We got some pizza at a little spot near our hotel before calling it a night!

Autokinetic
Tumblr media
All this machinery making modern music
Can still be open-hearted
Not so coldly charted, it's really just a question of your honesty
Yeah, your honesty
- from “The Spirit of Radio” by Rush, 1980
It’s Friday, and it’s raining in Minnesota. We're here to dance Saturday night away in celebration of Intellephunk’s 25-year anniversary, but before these festivities, we get to celebrate another significant piece of Minneapolis’ music history: Autokinetic, aka Mike McClure.
Lauryn and I have spent the morning and afternoon in St. Paul, eating delicious pastries from the French bakery around the block and catching up with old friends, and now it’s time for our interview with Mike. Accommodating as ever, he’s picked us up from our landing pad at flyover HQ, and is taking the scenic route down University Ave to get to his place in Northeast Minneapolis. “We’ll avoid some traffic this way.” Mike has lived in Minnesota his whole life, and it shows. The car ride feels like a tour of the Twin Cities, as he points out areas of historic interest with near-encyclopedic knowledge while maintaining the softness and approachability that make him so comfortable to be around. We cross an intersection in St. Paul and he exclaims, “This is where Freddy lives!” Freddy Fresh is a Midwest musical hero who’s had a profound impact on Mike’s journey. As he praises Freddy’s breadth and humility, I’m enveloped in an inexplicable warmth—the way he talks about his musical forebears is striking. He describes another of his early influences, Woody McBride, as a spirit full of kindness—but Mike, too, is like this, seemingly without even realizing it.
We arrive at his home, and after offering me and Lauryn all manner of snacks and beverages, he welcomes us into his studio, where we hang out and chat for the next couple of hours.
Tumblr media
We’re joined by Mike’s cat (read: muse) Pandora, who can be heard mewing and purring at several points during the interview. She and Mike share a special bond—she spends most of our time together sitting on his lap, and is almost always in the studio when he’s working on music. She’s pictured here next to a Roland TR-909, taking a break from sitting with Mike to lay on a pile of designated cassette tape, which acts as a sort of cat bed in the studio.
“We had a big piano in the house. That was the first thing—synthesizers were later.”
Music has been a part of Mike’s life for a long time. He grew up in a big, musical family, getting a balance of “goofy,” collaborative and improvisational family music time at home, with an intense formal music education at MacPhail. He started piano at age 7, and by high school he was a multi-instrumentalist. Despite struggling with stage fright, to the point of even vomiting on a couple occasions (“Luckily, not on anyone!”), Mike’s life revolved around music and performing, spending virtually all his time participating in concerts, jazz ensemble, marching band, parties, and rehearsals.
Tumblr media
His love affair with electronic music began when he was 12, playing with his first synth in his bedroom and taking trips to Minneapolis with older sister Carolyn, who brought him to record stores in the city to help feed his interest in hip-hop, breaks, and electro. He recalls loving the 808 hi-hats, but not understanding how they were made. “What are those sounds?” He was young when this curiosity sparked, and it would have a tremendous impact on his life. A few years later, during breaks from cleaning band instrument rentals at his first job at Schmidt Music, he finally came into close contact with the boxes that would give way to his synth fever.
“My buddies were there in the sales room, and when there was downtime, we’d go out there and there’d be like, Alpha Junos, and drum machines and things, and it was like, 'Oh, that’s where those fucking sounds came from,' and then I look at the price tag. [laughs] … But then, the desire to have..to get that sound going, drove me to start trying to find..well, where do you get these things? How do you get ‘em used?”
This desire became fused with introductions to underground sounds through friend and band-mate David Jarosz, who worked at Let It Be records just after their time in high school.
“So during and right after high school, [I was] in a lot of cover bands, we did Poison, and Black Sabbath....one of my best friends, his name is Dave, DJ Drone is what he ended up being in town, but he worked at a record store and he kinda got us all into different...like, he introduced me to Aphex Twin, he introduced me to house music, everything. He was like: ‘This is what you should be listening to. Put the Jane’s Addiction away, listen to Selected Ambient Works, here’s some Guidance, Prescription!’ I was like, ‘Oh my god, this electronic stuff is cool.’”
After he’d spent some years immersing in these sounds, he actually got to meet a pioneer of electronic music: George Clinton. Mike’s older sister was acquainted with the Parliament-Funkadelic founder for a time. During George’s visits, she would ask Mike to be their driver around town (“Helllllll yeah I’ll meet George Clinton!”). At one point, she asked him to bring his music gear along to show George some of the music he’d been working on.
Tumblr media
“I was nervous as hell. I got to play him some samples, and he gave me feedback. It was probably pretty scary music to him,” Mike laughs. “I was still kinda learning how to just get loops to sync up with the different machines, so it wasn’t quite in time. But he listened to the stuff and he was like, ‘Yeah! Yeah! This is pretty good, but, it doesn’t have that wiggle.’”
Mike is telling this story quite casually; Lauryn and I exchange looks of disbelief and the three of us laugh together for a moment. “Sorry, who said this?” we ask. “George!” says Mike, and smiles. The point for him is not the association with George’s name, rather, what he learned about swing, and the importance of feedback in the artistic process. George apparently jammed on Mike’s gear for a moment, too: “He’s playing my little PC200 controller with my Ensoniq patches, and he’s gettin’ stuff out of ‘em that I’m not, and I’m just like, wow... It needs the wiggle!” Mike jokes that he still only kind of understands ‘the wiggle,’ but to this day, he looks to other artists for inspiration, and values feedback deeply. “With George, that was important for me, just like, oh shit, I...this is fun...I kept getting feedback on my music, I want this to be better, I wanna learn! So, that’s an important point.”
Mike used this same set up when he played his first rave in 1993—which, if you can believe it, was also his first time attending a rave. Performing there was spontaneous, and unrehearsed, instructed by his friend Dave Drone to “just play sounds over the top” of his DJ set. A photo from the event ended up in the Star Tribune.
Tumblr media
“I was just rhythmically playing things that would sorta work, and I think he would bring me in and out, but I had a headphone in, and once in a while I’d be like, ‘Oh shit! It’s playing!’ And then a hilarious thing happened. There’s this company called Menards...”
Mike sings the jingle and Lauryn cackles.
“Early ‘90s, right..phenomenal. People were bringing a lot of samplers out at the time. So I’d record a buncha shit on TV and I had a sample of it, and there’s this drop [in the track at the rave] and I...... “SAVE BIG MONEY AT MENARDS!” is blasting over the sound system and people are like, ‘what the fuck is going on?’ because it wasn’t on a record. People were like, what the fuck is actually happening! So I was happy to be a part of that.”
I immediately think of the ‘DJs Will Put Anything Before The Drop’ videos that have proliferated on social media and laugh to myself. The past inside the present... Mike went on to use this trick at a few other parties, and his skill as a techno performer strengthened over the years as he cut his teeth at some of the best illegal raves in Minneapolis and other parts of the Midwest in the ‘90s, even regularly performing in Europe. This night in 1993 was where it all started.
Tumblr media
Mike is credited on the poster as Mindphaseone, a name he would eventually use for an experimental ambient project formed in 1994 with Drone, Matt Gerzema, and John Golden. They opened for DJ Shadow at First Ave in 1997, and one of the songs on their only album was licensed by MTV for the Tony Hawk Show. “Somewhere out there is a recording of Bill Clinton being interviewed and mindphaseone is playing in the background.”
This was the same year he met Freddy Fresh, and together with John Golden, helped start the Electric Music Foundation record label. Releases from this imprint helped to get gigs and push things along, but it was no mere stepping stone; Freddy took Mike under his wing and fueled his desire to create. Mike speaks candidly about Freddy’s impact on him: “We just, we connected... Everything, everything, everything I know how to do in the studio is from him. ... Like, how do you get this sound on this record? And he’s like, this is what they did. … Freddy answered all the questions.”
Freddy was a connector for Mike both in the Midwest and abroad (he introduced Mike to Craig Lambert, aka Midnight Music Club, with whom Mike has spent the bulk of his time creating since 2019 under the combined name AutoClub). He also got Mike performing in Germany in the '90s (“The first one was Fred calling me and saying ‘Hey do you wanna play in Germany at Liquid Sky Cologne next week?”), eventually expanding to gigs in Austria and Slovenia. The more Mike played out, the more he came to value ‘market research,’ or, in his own words: “...Going to shows, going to a lot of parties, listening to what was getting played, watching the dance floor. What makes people leave, what gets them goin’ crazy—what are those SOUNDS?! What are those secret things, trying to figure that out, and that’s going on to this day.” Freddy didn’t just teach him how to find the sounds and turn the knobs; he instilled a deep appreciation for the “beginner’s mind,” combining a steadfast work ethic with a humble, open-minded approach to creating.
Our conversation shifts to artistic process, techno preferences, and authenticity, and Mike refers back to his roots to share a nugget of wisdom. It’s difficult to describe how clear he seems responding to this prompt—a pool of calm energy, rooted in years of experience and humility.
“What did Geddy Lee from Rush say..... It’s a......question of your honesty. That’s really what it’s about. What’s this track, what are you trying to do? Are you trying to trick everyone or are you trying to be vulnerable in your music?”
For Mike, creating impactful art necessitates being comfortable making mistakes, and open to the opportunities they bring. It’s a form of acceptance, both of the present moment and of oneself, which can translate into mindfulness. When practiced, this can create an “imprint” of the artist in the track by capturing “a moment in time.” This is the soul in the machine that makes techno exciting.
“To me, there’s something in the track that’s more than just the recording. Something was imprinted in it, … there's a layer to it that’s beyond what you’re hearing. And I don’t know how to put that into words. But there’s like, ‘What! How did they? There’s another track in there!’ That’s like an emotion..it’s...I...nothing else sounds like it. And if it’s loud and it’s moving your body, now it’s getting imprinted in you and your blood and your bones. That’s why I love going to shows and standing there and just getting hit by sound, I feel like you can record it somehow. And then later when you’re in here [the studio], you’re like, ‘Awh yeah I remember, this might work, I saw people dancing to this rhythm!”
Through his discipleship in the ‘90s, as well as his own trial-and-error, Mike has realized that in order to get to that place with creation, he sometimes has to almost force himself into the studio, even if it’s just to read a manual on a new piece of gear, or record something when he’s not feeling totally inspired. This “do it anyway” attitude is aided by his musical upbringing, improvising goofy songs with family while attending the “intense” MacPhail. Mike doesn’t pretend to have it all figured out. He sometimes struggles with his own creative blocks. But drawing upon his foundation—expanded by his teachers—Mike’s found a process that works for him, and seemingly, his mission is to share that with others. He shares an insight gained from jam sessions with pals, further cementing his belief in honest creation being an ongoing process:
The track is in you by the way – it’s not in the boxes. It doesn’t matter what you’re making. I just learned that recently, with Dustin [Zahn] coming over, messing with the studio. I had some Mike stuff up; after an hour, it was Dustin’s stuff. And he had a Dustin track. I’m like, how did you????! Wait! But how! Like, it sounds so good! [laughs] It’s the same with Lonefront. I wanna be able to do that. Get your track out of whatever the stuff is. It doesn’t matter if you have million dollar gear, or a $100 sampler. These tracks are inside of you. How do you get ‘em out? How do you express that shit? I don’t know..it’s ongoing. [laughs] It’s a continuum, there’s no answer! You just gotta keep doing it.”
If there’s one thing we learned from Mike during this interview, it’s this: creator as conduit. When you come to know Mike, and his music, you can hear the inspiration of his teachers through how he executes his art. You can also see the influence of these teachers in how he interacts with his community, providing undying support and mentorship to other artists in the Twin Cities. The Auto Kinetic project has evolved through many iterations since its formation in the early ‘90s—what hasn’t changed is the deep current of humility and collaboration that gives it motion. Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is UPS use for?
An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a device that allows a computer to keep running for at least a short time when incoming power is interrupted. As long as utility power is flowing, it also replenishes and maintains the energy storage. You can book your UPS Power Backup on Rent in Greater Noida from Kief Solutions easily.
2. What is UPS and how it works?
An uninterruptible power supply (UPS), also known as a battery backup, provides backup power when your regular power source fails or voltage drops to an unacceptable level. A UPS allows for the safe, orderly shutdown of a computer and connected equipment.
3. What are the 3 types of UPS?
The three major types of UPS system configurations are online double conversion, line-interactive and offline (also called standby and battery backup). These UPS systems are defined by how power moves through the unit.
4. How long can UPS last?
Because their chemicals naturally deplete over time, even UPS batteries that are well cared for and properly maintained will still need to be periodically replaced, generally every three to five years.
5. What are advantages of a UPS?
A UPS System Serves Multiple Purposes:
Protect against power interruptions. Provide adequate power during short-term interruptions and “ride-through” time to convert to backup supply. Refine the quality of the power as it reaches your building, office and equipment.
6. Can UPS work without battery?
Offline UPS does not provide any feature without battery. Line interactive UPS provides only very limited features (voltage regulation) to load without battery. That's the idea both offline and line interactive UPS always should work with battery only.
7. How do I set up UPS at home?
To charge the Battery via inverter, connect the Inverter / UPS to the outgoing of main double pole (DP) MCB through a 3 Pin Power Plug and 3 Pin Power socket to the main supply. Note: To be in safe mode, use 6 AWG (7/064″ or 16mm2) cable and wire size to connect the UPS to the main panel board.
8. How long do a UPS last without power?
For most typical computer workstations, one might have a UPS that was rated to keep the machine alive through a 15 minute power loss. If it is important for a machine to survive hours without power, one should probably look at a more robust power backup solution that includes a generator and other components.

Music Instrument Rental Near Me
If you are interested in learning to play a musical instrument for any reason, you will have to visit a music instrument rental shop near you. This type of store is very popular with people who teach musical instruments and teach others how to play as well. This type of business is usually run by a home-based business that looks to expand their customer base by offering this type of rental service. The way it works is that customers pay a one time fee and then the rental company holds their instrument while they're at school or somewhere else. The person who hired them then takes it home and starts to use it.
Most of these instruments are fairly expensive, but you can get a student version of most of them. This way, you don't have to buy your own instrument. It's definitely more affordable than buying a new guitar or keyboard. The equipment itself is not broken down in any way so they are safe to play anywhere at anytime. They are also not limited in any way - they can play anywhere there is an instrument to be played. These are just some of the reasons why some people look into music instrument rental instead of buying one of their own.
The best way to find a music instrument rental shop is to start looking in the phone book under music instrument rentals. You can also try some online searches to see if there are any available locations near you. If you live close to a college campus, there might be several stores that are involved in providing this service to their students. Once you have a list of a few stores near you, start calling each one to see what they offer. Make sure you ask about prices, hours of operation, types of music, and the length of time they have been in business.
There are many different places that offer this type of music rental. You can either go in person to pick out your instrument or bring it home with you. If you bring it home with you, there is no need to rent a music instrument unless you really know how to play it. Going in person will allow you to get a good look at the music instrument you are interested in as well as the store. It will allow you to see the quality of the music and to ask questions about terms and conditions.
When going in person for your music instrument rental, remember to bring your student notes along with you. You want to make sure that you are paying for exactly what you are getting. Ask the music store manager about any special deals or fees that might apply to your situation. You may be able to get a good deal on your student discount if you ask the right questions and are persistent.
Once you have made your choice and gotten your music instrument rental scheduled, all you need to do is show up. Make sure that you are ready to learn. Many rentals require that you have a student version of the instrument. Be sure that you are up to the challenge of learning on the day that you receive your music instrument rental. Most people who go in to a music instrument rental place are amazed at the quality of the instruments and how great they sound.
