i think what people dont get about the last ten mins of ep 6 and the THE KISS™️ was the fact that crowley had no intention to do it in the first place. he probably thought he'd say his piece with making what was between them out in the open. then go on that alcoholic breakfast at the ritz once they work it all out. but when he heard aziraphale say 'hey i have to go deal with heaven, i have to go to heaven'.
all the cards are on the table. they both know they want each other, they love each other in their own way. but both their thoughts of 'together' is shaped so differently. its like being on the same boat but not looking at the same directions.
and so begun that desperation to keep each other on the same page and that led to even more miscommunication. in the end, loving each other and not knowing how to express it became the road block.
and the thing is that, crowley's last ditch effort to hash it out was the kiss. it wasnt temptation, it wasnt anything else. it was utter desperation of someone who loved to get aziraphale on the same page. and the thing is, he's only seen romance from films the way aziraphale has only seen romance in books. if it worked on the movies, wouldnt it work for him too???
but because they've danced around so much about the word and feeling of love that they dont even know that their being together was already LOVE itself.
like all of this was such a poignantly well written facet of six thousand years of not defining what they already knew for the sake of doing what they thought was right for each other. and yet it was the very thing that tore them apart because they're no longer on one boat, they're just two boats in the night wishing they could be together on the same view.

My Nice and (hopefully) Accurate Good Omens Theories
Alright, here are some conclusions I have come to upon my third full watch of Good Omens. I hear all this talk about the coffee theory, and even the threat theory, but I think that the Metatron didn't have to do much to tear them apart.
We all saw the look the Metatron gave Crowley as he turned to walk out of the book shop with Aziraphale. He cast Crowley out of heaven. That was a look of pure disgust as he looked at a fallen angel, tempting another angel. There is glaring evidence that the Metatron remembers Crowley's questions/suggestions at the Beginning. He remembers Crowley as a threat, thus he wishes to take away the things that Crowley loves. Crowley loves Aziraphale and the Earth, so what better punishment than to have Aziraphale be the one to destroy the Earth with the second coming.
As for how he manipulated Aziraphale, he capitalized upon Aziraphale's desperate need to make a difference, and his love for Crowley. He knew that Crowley would never return to Heaven as an angel. So, he made Aziraphale think that was an option. Aziraphale, like Crowley, loves the Earth. He loves the Earth and everything on the Earth. He knows that Heaven is corrupt, but he is determined that he can make it better for the things he loves. If he were to see it as an institutional problem he would become fallen. His greatest fear is that he will fall from Her grace. I haven't quite determined why I think he got in the elevator after the Metatron said that they were planning the second coming, but I imagine it stems from a point of pride. Like, how can he turn around now that he has burned that bridge? Can he face Crowley again after hurting him so much?
The kiss was a kiss derived from desperation, not love. It was a last ditch effort made by Crowley to get Aziraphale to admit his feelings and stay. It didn't work because Aziraphale is very set in his ways most of the time. He didn't see any love in that kiss, he saw the temptation to fall so that he could live out the rest of his eternity with Crowley. However, as stated previously, he fears falling so much that he won't take the temptation. He won't leave Heaven until he finally realizes that the problems are, in fact, institutional. That, in order to make a difference, he will have to join Crowley to completely tear down and rebuild the system.

I want to point out some of the things I kinda noticed while watching GO Season 2, but I also binged it and stayed up until 2am, so taken with a grain of salt. Spoilers, of course.
Crowley’s romantic idea about falling in love is “huddling together under an awning in the rain” which means he probably fell for Aziraphale after he gave away the flaming sword and crowded under his wing.
Crowley also has the idea of having one kiss and that’s enough to make a relationship stick. Which means that was literally his last-ditch effort to get Aziraphale to like him back. And it failed in his eyes.
The way Crowley has his eyes uncovered when he’s giving his confession (he wants to be seen, he wants to be vulnerable) vs him putting his glasses back on before the kiss (he’s nervous and has to be brave)
Aziraphale nervously touching his lips after the kiss (and how he nervously leaned into it, even grabbing Crowley before realizing he shouldn’t be doing this) is a little similar to how he was licking at the food before trying it for the first time - he thought Crowley was trying to tempt him, hence the “I forgive you.” The forgiveness is not for him leaving (though I guess that counts too) but because he thinks Crowley tried to tempt him away from Heaven.
I know people are mad about the ending (don’t ask for a slow burn then complain when you get the slow burn) but all of Aziraphale’s flashbacks were leading up to that moment. All of his “you’re nice, you’re kind, you’re not so bad after all” is justification for him still spending time with Crowley even though he’s “one of the bad guys.” He still equates angels with good and demons with bad. Every good deed Crowley does makes Az think “there’s still a bit of angel in you” and not “you’re a nice demon” like most people are assuming. You could equate it as internalized homophobia, because it’s clear he cares for Crowley but thinks this is something he shouldn’t want, see above, re: temptation.
Like the above, Az doesn’t see Beez/Gabriel running away as an ideal. He thinks of their departure as a punishment despite it being what they wanted - he loves Earth too much to leave it, which is why he’d rather do good then just leave.
The spy saying something about the clarinet and the clarinet picking up in the background vs “do you hear that”/“I hear nothing” and the momentary silence.
The Metatron looked at Crowley before taking Az out of the bookshop. That was planned. Get rid of Gabriel and have a close eye on Az in the same move.
Az almost said no to the Metatron after the kiss and Crowley waited outside the shop to give Az one more chance to come with him.
The “pink and blue bit” that Az says he likes about the stars might be Alpha Centuri, which is where Crowley wants to run away to.
The kiss is very similar to the wall push in season one in the rough way Crowley executes it but also in the way that Az just lets it happen.
Muriel was at the window. They saw the kiss.

Parallels to the war in heaven
We know that the paintball battle is supposed to be a reenactment of the war in heaven.
Newt is Crowley's analogue, and Newt has just gotten a NEW job as a low level clerk and is asking weird, basic questions of another low level employee--he's saying he can't do simple things the way they want them done. In analogy, Crowley must have been promoted or somehow infiltrated the upper admin to try to get info about/stop the planned shut down of the universe. But he was caught, aka Newt was fired after blowing the power. I think Crowley may have found some way to kill miracle power, if we interpret Newt killing all power literally: angels run on miracle power, and they can't delete creation if they don't have the miracles to do it with.
This means Crowley was not high ranking originally. I think what people are reading as deference and respect isn’t about Crowley's assumed high rank, it's just Aziraphale's innate kindness. Perhaps Aziraphale was higher ranking, but I don't think that fits either because he doesn't have an analogue I can identify in the paintball war among all the high admin.
I don’t think angel ranks used to be about how much power an angel was created with, barring possibly Lucifer/Satan. Crowley clearly has a lot of power, but if he wasn't high ranking then ranks can't have been 1:1 about raw power. Hell's respect for Crowley is because he tried to spy on admin to prevent the war that none of them wanted, to stop the destruction of the universe that all of Lucifer's/hell's side was trying to prevent, to protect something they loved. To protect them all. If he was an original archangel, perhaps they got to choose their rank, and he didn't want to be admin, instead doing engineering. Perhaps there weren't ranks below the top admin, and the sleeve decorations denoted type or raw power instead of rank.
I haven’t figured out who Aziraphale is yet in the office parallels, if he’s even there. Perhaps Newt's mother sending him off to his job is Aziraphale's analogue? That would explain why he's not in the war itself, and also why both of them were taken out "early" (ie the ineffables getting shot just as they enter the manor) if they both got caught infiltrating admin. It also means that, since they were shot by opposing sides, hell didn't know Aziraphale was helping Crowley. Newt's mother has a dark green/blue sweater over a dark green dress with white and brown decoration; that's probably death and god's game, which fits Crowley the angel being replaced with Crowley the demon, followed with Aziraphale's usual cognitive acrobatics thinking surely god must want her creations protected. Newt has a dark graybrown suit, white shirt, and tie is red, yellow, grayblue, brown, cream. That’s motivation of the rules and some combo of spying with fate/choice, and the tie is anger/fear plus defiance, spying for defense of life, fate, and bending the rules. His dark green plant means he's part of god's game; their backdrop is light brown bricks, meaning their plan was a choice, not fate. The white box his plant is in tells us that Crowley honestly thought he was doing the right thing to save creation. He was also reluctant to go to this job, he didn't think it would work out, so Crowley was doing this as a last ditch effort because this was better than the alternative. He wanted it to work, he believed, but he was already disillusioned by this time. What had already happened to make him that way? Or had he learned from Aziraphale how things actually go down?
We don’t see the paintball war going on before the ineffables show up at the manor. As they roll up, Aziraphale says the place is loved; I think this is saying that before the war, heaven as a place was loved, and love was abundant. But….how does that track with knowing that there was fear and authoritarianism long before that? Maybe it wasn’t the reality of it or god who was loved (or she was, and they didn't realize her nature yet), but how angel Crowley loved it–the way it could be, the way he wanted it to be, and presumably how Lucifer's side wanted things. Love between each other, before disagreements got entrenched. The war could have been over defending that idea against the growing authoritarianism, not about who should get to be dictator, as traditional christian myth says.
The paintball fight is yellow flags using blue paint, and red flags using yellow. The rebellion side is Lucifer’s side, that’s the yellow people. Norman Weathered is Lucifer–the guy who suggests the “training initiative” ie the war. "Norman Weathered" as a name means northman which biblically refers to either Babylon or the north star; Lucifer can be read as being the "north star" ie the morningstar. Weathered is "tender of rams".
The first time we see him in the office, he’s got a blue/white pinstripe shirt and his tie looks dark red, pinstripe black suit. Can’t see the pattern. Black coffee cup. This means he’s driven by respect for life and the rules, plus love, but he’s hiding all this presumably because despite being the highest archangel, half of heaven doesn’t like that he's speaking out against god.
I think the black coffee cup means that he's hiding something about what he's saying: perhaps he's pushing for the fight and using it or "the rules" as cover to get rid of his opponents in order to protect creation: willing to kill to protect life. I do not think it can be due to wanting to rule, despite that being the traditional accusation, because he would not have a dark red tie. Perhaps that's what the blue and white stripe shirt means more abstractly: he interprets the rules as protecting life, not dominating it, but he's willing to defend it with whatever it takes. During the fight we see his tie is actually bright red, with blue and white flower-looking things. Looks like the same type of flower as is on Metatron’s tie. That his tie goes from looking dark to bright red means he didn’t actually want war, that he was forced into it, just as we see Norman doing: if they want war, we'll give them war.
Yellow with blue ammunition is Lucifer's side saying life matters and that defiance is worth defending it, against Gabriel's red with yellow ammunition side saying Lucifer's defiance matters and using war to enforce that. Thus the war was actually not something god wanted at all: the only orange is on Frobisher, who represents Michael, and ended the war. Since most of them are wearing dark green and dark brown camo, that means the war was part of god's game aka the ineffable plan and it was fate: it wasn't planned per se, but it was fate that the angels would fight over something. God deliberately set them up, engineered it, because she created them as they are. But again, neither side was “hers”, her representatives, even though Gabriel's claimed they are because they won. That was retcon. All winners claim to have god's hand: it seems like god was already not talking to anyone as far back as the pre-fall, perhaps even as far back as immediately after planning creation, and we know this because Janice Evanson in the office says she put in a complaint to HR, ie God, trying to prevent the paintball game. God clearly does nothing.
Janice Evanson means "gift from god, the lord is gracious/favor this child". She's on team yellow. She has a very light blue/green shirt with black and brown designs, I'm going to call that a version of aqua, ie both blue and green: marked as the game and life. The black and brown designs mean she's only slightly dissembling when she's trying to stop the war, and she's exercising free choice to do so: perhaps she doesn't want war only because war is wrong or it's annoying. Janice could be Furfur, who in s2 complains to the dark council about Crowley, which fits Janice complaining to HR about the other employees. That's the wrong season though so it's unlikely. She may be Dagon, purely because when Newt arrives he asks about the wages database, so this group deals with those files, and Dagon is lord of files.
Louisa Blatt "famous dove warrior", is the woman Newt talks to who wears pearls and a black sweater over a white shirt during the fight. She is probably Beelzebub, because Louisa tells Janice that she doesn't trust the people from the other team, which is what Beez says of Michael during Crowley's trial in hell. If she is, then Beelzebub being "favored" and "a gift from god" is a radical statement about hell's denizens: this is who they were before the fall; they're not damned for losing, which we already knew from heaven's winning side not being god's agents. I had originally thought she was Uriel, but she's on team yellow, so unless some of the rebels weren't tossed to hell--which is something the authors would do--that doesn't fit. The name doesn't fit with Uriel's "god is my flame/light of god" though so I don't think that's likely for this character. Beez has an orange sash in s1, so I think her being Louisa with the pearls fits.
The red side is the establishment, Gabriel's. Gabriel is Nigel Tompkins, the guy who announces the paintball in the office and runs up to the ineffables at the manor. Nigel Tomkins means "little twin champion"; traditionally, Gabriel, Michael, and Lucifer were twins/triplets. The first time we see him in the office, his shirt is white with a dark red tie, black suit, bright red coffee cup. That means he's a stickler for the rules and also doing things out of love: there was indeed love present in heaven before the war, just as Aziraphale said "this place is loved". As we see in present-day heaven though, it completely lacks love, because authoritarianism won. Nigel is speaking for war though, hence the bright red cup.
Michael is Frobisher, "warrior", the woman who calls newt a dick and is the one who shoots Norman. Traditionally she's the one who casts Lucifer down to hell. She’s in light browns during the fight, so her taking down Lucifer was her own choice, not fate. They didn’t have to force them to hell. Presumably whatever happened to force the change of name from Satan to Lucifer is what "shooting Norman" is referring to, and that's what this choice means: that wasn't fate, wasn't planned, and was entirely the angels' idea. Michael either is or used to be favored by god before the war, due to Frobisher's dark orange hair; dark orange indicated negative change, throwing a wrench in the works, as opposed to positive things with neon orange like saving Job's kids. Negative change, as in creating hell and eternal fights.
Frobisher has a pink shirt; the only other times we've seen pink are on sex workers, Tracey and Mrs Sandwich, both BDSM doms. It seems Michael either has a side gig or has been domming demons since pre-fall. In s2, Michael and Dagon seem to have a history as Dagon makes faces at Michael, which Michael shakes her head at to indicate "now is not the time". If Janice is indeed Dagon, then perhaps in s3 Michael and Dagon will be next to jump ship like Gabriel and Beez did: Janice didn't want the war, and Michael has been seeing them since before the war which is the reason Beez jumped ship in s2. Perhaps that's part of why Michael was so insistent on becoming the next supreme archangel, to gain that freedom.
Crowley did change the guns from harmless paintball to real guns though, which I think means that god intervened to up the ante: perhaps the angels didn't originally attempt to kill each other, but god gave them something in the middle of the fight that each side may have interpreted as the other deliberately doing: "they wanted war", when it was actually god doing it for her own amusement. Was it changing one side to demons so that halo bombs would be deadly? Was it inventing hellfire and holy water too, so each side had a weapon? Given the halo s2 reference to the war, I think that might be it--god made the Fall happen either before or halfway through the battle because "they wanted to be kill each other, so she gave them what they wanted". It was originally just a moral argument about what silent god wanted, but then god made it so they could die. And blamed it on them to wash her hands, as if she wasn't inventing murder. No wonder Gabriel's side thought that meant God was on their side, and against Lucifer's. But if there's an equal number of angels and demons in present day, then there must have been way more on Lucifer's side to start with if halos can permanently discorporate demons. And if there were way more, then god would be forced to introduce death to make that fight equal, to make it entertaining. The war would have ended everything for her. Can't be having that.
In s2, there's another war parallel in the attack on the bookshop. Perhaps not all the demons and angels went to war, if the availability of the demons is an indicator, and if we read the humans as angels who sat out the battle. Only two humans stayed behind, and very few demons got assigned to go on attack--this fits with the idea that there must have been a lot more demons on Lucifer's side than angels on Gabriel's. I think god must have intervened so that Lucifer wouldn't win, in order to keep her game going, so that there would still be two sides to continue fighting: if that's true, then some demons could have fallen for no reason, depending on how she divided it up. Crowley wasn't one of them though, there was a reason, even though the reason was fascist.
I think the paintball war is how things happened from hell's perspective, and the bookshop attack is how it happened from heaven's perspective. That may be why it comes off so lopsided in the bookshop. I do think there were more on Lucifer's side, but I don't think they were all fighting--much as with the paintball fight, I think they were evenly matched, and god nerfed Lucifer. We see things from Lucifer's team POV, but we aren't shown the other team. In the bookshop, we see things from Aziraphale's POV, aka heaven's, and we don't really see much of the demons' while they're there.

WARNING! MAJOR SPOILERS FOR GOOD OMENS S2!
In the last episode of season two, right after Aziraphale told Crowley what the Metatron told him, Crowley says this:
"When Heaven ends life here on Earth, it'll be just as dead as if Hell ended it."
I think there's a hell of a lot more to this line than we think. Especially with what Crowley says after.
So, we know Crowley created the universe and he was super proud of it, and when he learned it would be destroyed, he was understandably angry and confused. I also think this is why he lived on Earth and not in Hell like other demons. He wanted to spend as much time with his creation as he could before it was ripped from him.
Well, I think his first "Please tell me you said no" after the whole destroying Earth thing was him saying "You helped me save my beautiful creation once, don't make me do it alone this time."
And after the pause I think his second one was him actually hoping Aziraphale would say that he said no. Then when Aziraphale reveals that he didn't say no, Crowley starts to confess as his, as we all know, last-ditch effort to get Aziraphale to stay.
Sure, Aziraphale has already said yes, but he hasn't left yet. He may not have lived on Crowley's beautiful planet for 6000 years like Crowley did, but he was here now and Crowley didn't want him to leave.
In short; I don't think Crowley refused Aziraphale's offer because he didn't want to become an angel again, at least not fully the reason. I think he refused it because he couldn't bear leaving behind his beautiful creation, even if it meant losing the love of his life and dying with his creation by the hand of Heaven.

Yeah, going through the meta posts you'd reblogged helped me understand Aziraphale's POV too. I still liked Aziraphale, but was a bit annoyed at him.
But yeah, Aziraphale thinks he has to take up this responsibility of Archangel, and that Crowley can live like an Angel again, making everything just the way it was, or in other words, make everything right in Aziraphale's mind.
Crowley didn't want any of that for all the valid reasons. Aziraphale must've been confused. After all, there are a lot of things about which he doesn't know anything about. Like Gabriel had intended to burn him to death in S1 is one of those things.
Aziraphale is doing what he thinks is right. It's fine, I guess.
Still though. I wish he had the kind of clarity Crowley has about what he wants in his life and what he doesn't. Aziraphale needs to stop feeling like he's the only one responsible for anything that happens in Heaven, for starters. I think he'll need time to get there eventually.
(I think it's not different from people quickly throwing all the blame at John for getting engaged and then marrying Mary in S3. He didn't have the insight about The Fall as the audience did.)
I love this blog as much as the other one! :)
Hi Lovely!
OH ABSOLUTELY re: Aziraphale! I replied something similar on the other post you sent, but my belief is that Aziraphale and Crowley aren't really TALKING and that's the problem. They're both wrong and they're both right, and their desire to protect each other is overriding their common sense!
Crowley's timing was SHIT. They were both emotional and angry, and Crowley did it as a last-ditch effort to keep Azzie there, because I think he KNOWS Azzie loves him. Azzie on the other hand KNOWS Crowley adores him but because of his own hangups and misconceptions, I don't think he REALLY realized that Crowley actually LOVE loves Aziraphale, in the way that Aziraphale didn't think Crowley could. It's heartbreaking the longer you let the season sit with you.
And exactly re: the insight. Aziraphale didn't know the WHOLE truth, just as, I believe, I don't think WE and CROWLEY know the whole truth about the Metatron either. Remember, the Final Fifteen was primarily Crowley's POV, so there could be things we and Crowley (who is the stand in for the audience) may ALSO not know yet.
They both need to TALK. Aziraphale needs to see for himself how corrupt Heaven is. And Crowley needs to let Aziraphale "Fall" (not in the literal sense of the Angels and Demons, but in the metaphorical sense of "falling into a realization").
I believe that there's a reason that the music for the Job cliff scene is the same as the Final E6 credits scene: I think it's because it's meant to show us the precise moments that Crowley started protecting Aziraphale from the Bad Things, the "I won't tell anyone" nature of his protecting Aziraphale from Falling... and mirror scene of Crowley "letting Aziraphale Fall", ironically upward, allowing Aziraphale to see the lies for himself.
And I think their reunion and REAL kiss will be the most beautiful thing, and I can't wait.

Crowley Rejecting Aziraphale’s Offer Was Complicated
Most common consensus amongst Good Omens fans, especially after first watch of THE scene, is that Crowley got most of us kids in the divorce. He’s the most easily understandable. But there’s a lot going on with him in this scene.
1)Crowley is really goddamn tired. Coming to this from an Aziraphale apologist side, there’s a lot of confusion over why Crowley consistently attempts to run away from heaven and hell, leaving humanity to their own devices, instead of wanting to help. The answer is he’s tired of putting up with heaven and hell’s bullshit. He doesn’t see either side with rose-tinted glasses. He sees both as corrupt forces egging each other on in an even more corrupt system that would have to be entirely dismantled for any change to be seen. He and Aziraphale have already been trying to clean up their messes for the majority of their careers, and frankly, he’s done. Especially after Armageddon, he and Aziraphale have done enough. Why shouldn’t they run off together and finally get some well deserved rest? Gabriel and Beelz got to do it, and they were part of the problem!
2)He knows Aziraphale’s plan won’t work. This is probably the main reason we all agree with him. He’s 100% the rational one in this situation. Aziraphale can’t fix heaven. The entire system has to be dismantled and Crowley knows the Metatron is manipulating Aziraphale. It’s obvious that the Metatron won’t actually let Aziraphale do anything. Aziraphale’s hopes are futile, and Crowley doesn’t want to see him hurt. He just wants to be happy with him.
3)He doesn’t see why Aziraphale still ties his sense of self to heaven. Crowley says multiple times: He doesn’t see them as two different sides anymore. They are, or they should be, “an us”. No longer belonging to heaven and hell, but to each other. To him it means love and rebellion and all of those things he thinks he and Aziraphale have been fighting for all this time. Turning that down feels like a romantic rejection to Crowley. He doesn’t see that Aziraphale still struggles with having been told all his life that he NEEDS to be a good angel to amount to anything at all because Aziraphale didn’t tell him that. Just like he didn’t tell Aziraphale that he’s grown beyond being an angel, or even a demon.
In the end, Crowley kisses Aziraphale in a last ditch effort to show Aziraphale exactly what he thinks this argument is about. It’s about the two of them, finally being in love and getting their rest. He doesn’t mean for it to shock Aziraphale so badly or for it to appear like an emotional dagger with which to end the argument.
(Despite Aziraphale’s shock he still reads “I forgive you” as a condemning rejection, and why shouldn’t he? He didn’t hear “do it again” as much as Aziraphale wanted to say it.)

it’s a gray day; have a whumpy wip.
(reverse omens; raphael is an archangel, living under the guise of crowley, a lower tier angel; azira is the poor demon that raphael lied to for 6 millennia and got his heart broken upon learning the truth)
takes place at the bus stop after armageddon:
---
Azira flinches when Raphael— appearing this time as Crowley— approaches.
Raphael opens his mouth, trying to get a word in, but Azira won't let him.
"You shouldn't be here."
Crowley— no...Raphael pauses. It's the same words he greets the demon whenever he shows a little too much enthusiasm at spending time with the angel.
"They'll come for you, if they knew your involvement. You may be an archangel, but you'll be outnumbered."
"I don't give a damn about that!" Raphael automatically retorts.
For the first time since his arrival, the demon turns to look at him. "Since when?" Azira asks evenly.
This time, it’s Raphael that flinches. He always used that excuse to avoid getting closer to the demon, the excuse to stave off those feelings that have been brewing since the beginning of humanity.
What will my superiors say when they find one of their own fraternising with a demon?
Words he threw out so carelessly before, but Azira had always been undeterred, always saying that he'll be sure to be careful.
(he never was, hence why Raphael had to lie and say he was only manipulating the demon for Heaven’s benefit)
He’ll make it up to him. He will. "Since now," Raphael says, sitting next to him on the bench.
His heart aches when Azira stills before inching away from him. "There's no need. What's done is done. They don't need to punish both of us."
"I won't let you suffer alone— "
"You don't need to be here, Raphael."
That word, that name, doesn’t sound right coming from Azira's mouth. It was always Crowley. He was always Azira's Crowley.
But Azira's not done. "You have what you want and I have what I want. Perhaps it's time to end this little arrangement—"
"What," Raphael grabs him by the arm, heart splintering when Azira looks at him with fright. "What do you mean—"
"The hellfire. It's yours. And I—" Azira swallows. "I have my earth. I may not have long to enjoy it but—"
"Then come with me,” Raphael pleads. "I'll protect you, I've always—"
"No," Azira gasps. "No, I don't— I'll be fine on my own."
"Azira, no, we both know—"
"Yes, yes, I know, I've always depended on you to keep me safe, isn't that right? Well, it's a damn good thing I'll no longer be your burden to bear!"
"Burden?" Raphael breathes out. Where is this coming from?
"It's a fine thing you did, hiding your name, hiding your power, hiding your intentions all this time. I know I wouldn't have the patience to pull it off."
"My intentions—"
"Were to manipulate a demon, isn't that right? Gather intel for Heaven?"
The realization sinks in. His demon overheard him and misunderstood. "Azira, wait—"
"I'm no longer of any use to you. When they bring me back, it will be to my execution." He turns to Raphael, the warm, firebright glow that always used to shine when the demon looked at him, dulled to dying embers. "I don't have much time. Please, let me go."
"You're mad if you think I intend on letting you go—I'm telling you, I can protect you! I won't let them hurt you, you know that—"
"By what? hiding me away? Do you have a cozy little prison waiting for me in Heaven where Gabriel can torture me for more information with the bloody Sound of Music—"
Raphael's growing frustrated; time's running out and—he's never had Azira deny him before. Not like this. Not even with the hellfire. "Do you honestly think I’d do that to you!?" Raphael's grip on Azira's arm is beginning to hurt and the demon whimpers under the force. "How long have you known me, Azira? I would never—"
"I don't," Azira gasps, prying his arm from Raphael's grip and scrambling away from him in a panic. "I don't know who you are."
Raphael's heart breaks. "It's me. Yes, I lied about my name and my position in Heaven but that's all—Azira, I swear to you! I lied to the others so they wouldn't suspect a thing when they saw us together—"
"So you lied about being worried that your superiors might catch you?!"
"Azira!" Raphael knows he should be apologizing, begging for forgiveness, but he can't stand that look of contempt on his demon's face, not when that face had only ever shown him warmth and happiness when they were together.
"I loved him, did you know that?" Azira breathes out, eyes wet.
Something ugly twisted in Raphael's chest at the admission. "Who?"
Who is he? who stole your heart after all this time? After I thought you had only wanted mine?
"Crowley," Azira says, tears streaking down his face.
Raphael’s heart stops. "Azira..." A delirious warmth spread throughout his chest. Raphael wants to gather the demon in his arms, kiss him until the tears stopped and kiss him more after that. "I'm here, Azira, please— I lo—"
"But he was a lie too, wasn't he?"
that’s all i have so far.
the idea i had in my head was a reverse!omens with a demon aziraphale and an archangel raphael who lives on earth under the alias of crowley
the gist of the whumps is that azira fell and fell hard for crowley and crowley....cared about him (this is really a reversal) and only learned to love him much later on—
only for aziraphale to realize that the person he fell in love with is a lie.
crowley never existed. only an archangel who lied to him for millennia
it's the reverse of Good Omens too in that azira is very open in his adoration and (giant) crush on crowley, but crowley always played it off, at first believing that— well azira's a demon so that's a no-go, but also later on when he does start admitting to himself that he cares for the demon a lot more, he ALSO puts the barrier up because... he knows now that he's putting the demon he genuinely cares about in danger by being with him
later on, when they have an argument over hellfire (crowley wants it as insurance; he may be powerful, but so are the other archangels), crowley calls their tentative whatever it is "fraternising" and it honestly breaks azira's heart
like poor azira, he genuinely thinks that maybe there's a chance that he could be more than just good company to have, someone the angel can converse with over wine about topics that he can't with other humans—
but it's there that azira gets this feeling that crowley...might just be using him.
it. hurts.
but azira's in love and has been in love for so long, and against himself, he gives crowley the hellfire anyways. he leaves it there, warming the cold, barren hearth of crowley's apartment
in the attempts at botching the Armageddon, azira misplaced the antichrist. crowley's furious, not really at the demon, no, but azira's right there and a target of the archangel's panic and ire
azira recommends that they run off together and crowley scoffs at the idea
in crowley's mind, he knows that he won't be able to protect them both this time. he won't be able to fend off the other archangels who not only want his blood, but his demon's as well
crowley needs a plan and needs it fast. and— he can't have azira flubbing it this time
((raphael, obviously stronger than azira, has spent maaany millennia saving the demon. weird, it's almost the spoilt thing wants to be rescued))
he tells azira to leave and go home; he already made a mess of things as it is and that he'll call azira if he needs something
((further cementing the feeling azira has that crowley is only using him))
heartbroken, azira leaves but not before finding the book of prophecy the witch-girl left after crowley, in his panic-stricken mind, actually ran over (she was okay; azira made sure she survived) he goes through it, poring over it and understanding the prophecies and goes to crowley to show him what he's found out— show him that he's not just a burden—
only to sense the powerful presence of several archangels
azira panics— what if they found out what crowley was up to? what if they take him, or worse, punish him for trying to avert armageddon?
he hides his presence (a neat little trick he picked up; very useful when following the trail of the angel you love) and listens in on the conversation and nearly has a heart attack when crowley drops the façade and shows his form, his true form, the archangel raphael
heartbreak 1: crowley lied to him. in fact, worse: crowley was the lie himself. the being that azira loved and cherished never existed
heartbreak 2: the archangels are talking to Raphael about the demon that he was supposedly 'manipulating' in order to gain intel (a lie Raphael came up with so that they wouldn't be suspicious about why he was hanging around a demon so much); of course, azira believes them and understands, truly, that he was just being toyed with from the start
heartbreak 3: Raphael sounds like he's all for war (he's not; he's playing the role the archangels expect him to) ready to eradicate the legions of hell and bring an end to this miserable world (the world azira loves, the world where he feels he belongs, the world where he fell in love and almost believed himself to have a chance at being loved in return)
azira leaves and vows to fix things
he doesn't need crowley, raphael, whoever— he is
he'll stop armageddon himself if he needs to
azira goes to track down the boy himself using the prophecies from the witch's book meanwhile, raphael is panicking; the plans are underway and even speaking to the metatron doesn't give him access to speak to God— his last-ditch effort
he thinks back to azira's stupid suggestion—that they run off together—and a part of him is desperate enough to believe that even prolonging their demise would be enough.
he can't—won't fight azira in the battlefields. and he'll slay his own kin if they so much as raise a sword to his demon
he's calling azira's bookshop but there's no answer. he goes there himself and finds it engulfed in flames
hell has found his demon and raphael gives up all hope
it’s azira that finds Adam and is the one to single-handedly convince him to stop armageddon, that he doesn't need to be a slave to this supposed destiny of his
meanwhile, crowley watches on, stunned—that his demon is alive and—actually competent?
raphael wants to be there, wants to stand by azira's side so badly
he knows he has a lot to explain, a lot to apologize for, over 6,000 years of lies and deceit but it's that look in azira's eyes from across the tadfield air base that stops raphael in his tracks.
fear
azira is afraid…of him
armageddon is averted all thanks to a demon that loved this world more than anything and no thanks to an archangel who would have committed treason to save the demon he loved

Finding His Light
Chapter 4/?
The two of them leave the bookshop only twice in the next week.
The first is for a date at the Ritz.
On a drive back, because Crowley insists that he gives Aziraphale a ride somewhere, the angel is trying to police Crowley’s driving while ignoring two things.
One, Crowley’s vibration has been spiking at random intervals. Two, his own is threatening to do the same.
As an angel, he doesn’t see auras like that witch from Armageddon, but rather a sort of heat feeling from those with stronger energy fields. Other ethereal beings require little effort to sense, but Crowley has always been easy, no effort required, since day one.
And due to the previous day, his demon’s had random and violent flashes of heat radiating from him, most of them catching Aziraphale off guard, and some of them requiring the angel to actually comment on it.
They get back to the shop and Crowley leads him inside.
“Your vibration is staggering, dear.”
“Ah, it’s nothing, Angel. Just been a little all over the place lately.”
“You don’t have to hide things from me, Crowley.”
“You know what I mean, it’s just.. er, it’s- it’s all the…”, he gestures wildly to the space between them.
“The recent events?”
“Yes, yes of course, the recent events, yes. It’s all… everywhere.”, he indicates this by wiggling his fingers around him.
“Well, I’m glad you’ve been happy.”
And there it is again.
Aziraphale rolls his eyes and Crowley lounges on the loveseat.
He sits down next to him and gives himself momentary courage to sit touching.
Crowley puts an arm around him, glad for his glasses.
What can he do? The love of his life has actually agreed to be the love of his life, he can’t help overreacting inside.
He pulls Aziraphale closer to him and renews his promise again by telling himself to protect this angel at any cost. His scent is nearly intoxicating at this proximity, and Crowley lets out a soft snort when his angel’s own vibration begins to steadily increase.
“You know how great this is?”
“What?”
He doesn’t want to have to say it. He’s never been mushy, and he isn’t about to start now.
“It’s just nice. I wish you wouldn’t hold yourself back like you are.”
Aziraphale stiffens. Of course Crowley’s able to see that he’s having issues fully giving in.
“But, you don’t have to right now. I’ll help you catch up, but we aren’t rushing anything.”
Aziraphale relaxes under his arm and Crowley takes his glasses off, miracling them away. The angel raises his legs up after miracling his shoes elsewhere, and then leans properly into Crowley’s side.
His eyes are closed, but Aziraphale isn’t sleeping. He never has, and probably never will. He lets himself relax and inhale, breathing in that weird gasoline and soil scent of Crowley’s that he loves so much.
How is he supposed to act? Does anything have to change? He rather enjoys this new form of closeness with his demon, despite never understanding why humans did it themselves. Aziraphale probably would never experience arousal, but he was more than okay with that.
Nasty human activity, sex.
He was pretty sure Crowley wasn’t a fan of it either, despite his nature.
The pair lay like that for a while, Aziraphale noticing when Crowley begins to slump, then breathe heavier.
He lays with his eyes closed on Crowley’s lap for quite some time- until the demon wakes up.
The second time they leave the bookshop isn’t as pleasant. Aziraphale is off to visit his barber, as well as a couple other friends, while Crowley needs to check on his plants and the rest of his house.
The demon is definitely not deciding what needs to go and what is getting brought to the shop.
He snaps, and his door is unlocked.
Despite this, he is uneasy. He feels something big. He focuses on sensing it, but remaining calm, as he strolls in and waters what needs to be watered, as well as taking out the good rum and ale from his liquor cabinet.
He sets a bottle on the table and feels the big thing closer, yet… less.
There’s four things.
He can feel more clearly now, and as he lines up what he plans on taking to the bookshop, he feels Beelzebub.
Crowley stops.
“How rude of you all to show up at someone’s place uninvited!”, he lifts his head and calls out, gathering what little composure he has in the face of this threatening vibration coming from the Lord of Hell.
Hastur, Ligur, and Beelzebub appear from the shadows, followed by a lesser demon.
“You’re coming with us.”, says the lesser demon.
“No, I’m not.”, Crowley snarls, gathering his energy.
Beelzebub flicks an arm and a bat appears, dripping with something awful and infested with flies. Crowley summons a pipe and twirls it.
Ligur rushes him, and he swings. The lead pipe connects with the taller demon’s abdomen, and Hastur growls. Ligur is behind him in seconds, and Hastur gets to him almost as fast. Crowley hears a thunk with he strikes Hastur’s head, but while preoccupied, is hit in the side by Beezebub’s bat.
He drops his weapon as the wind is knocked out of him. Ligur immediately has his arms uncomfortably held behind him. He summons his wings as a last ditch attempt to throw him off, maybe taste a few feathers, but Ligur is prepared for it.
Another crack of the bat, this time where his shoulder and neck meet.
The lesser demon approaches with something in her hand.
A… a sewing needle?
She stands in front of him, and he struggles madly, kicking the best he can.
Beelzebub stops him with another hard smack.
She dips the needle into a small jar she’s pulled from her sweatshirt, then quickly shoves it into his neck.
Crowley screams for a moment, then feels a little off.
He feels his neck relax, numb, then his shoulder, his chest, his other arm and a leg, his face, then everything else. His eyes close, his mouth falls open, and he is unaware of everything next.
When he wakes up, he is in a room. An empty bathtub sits in the corner, overturned, and he’s suddenly very afraid of holy water.
He goes to stand, but nearly falls over with how weak his limbs are. He gets himself against a wall and leans, breathing shallow and eyes wide without his glasses to cover them.
“What is this?!”, he screams, “Fuck all of you!”
He restrains himself from jumping at Beelzebub’s voice.
They come through the door, locking it behind them.
“If holy water doesn’t kill you, we figured we’d just beat the shit out of you instead.”
“Why are you doing this? Why now?!”, he asks, refusing to have his spirit broken or his fear show.
“Shut up!”, Beelzebub walks up and hits him hard, in the legs. He crumples to the floor like a soda can, and the attack is followed by another to his back.
Right in the middle, and he can feel it spread like a disease.
He struggles to sit up, but when he does, he receives a sharp blow to the back of the head.
Of course, this doesn’t knock him out.
“Stay down.”, he feels compelled to obey, as this is the Lord of Hell, and he is a demon.
Despite this, he tries to sit back up, only to be met with another blow.
He tries again.
And again.
And again.
And he keeps trying, because now he isn’t on Earth, and Heaven knows that Aziraphale is alone.
He isn’t about to let his angel go unprotected for another minute.
He lets out a scream as his legs and arms decide to work with him. He swings, misses, and they hit him behind the knees.
Crowley’s knees hit the concrete hard, and he knows he’ll be unable to heal this with a miracle.
He just hopes Aziraphale is fine.
