Crêpes part 10
Previous | First | Next
Crowley is connecting all the dots… let's just hope he connected them correctly.
This part took forever, not only because it’s so long and I had to do quite a bit of research and rewatching for it but also because I got sick in multiple ways since the previous part lol.
Note that this is just a fun comic where I wanna play around with some ideas for theories, it’s not to dismiss any other ones! ….Maybe I'm also trying to cope a little lol.
Also I obviously used quite a few refs from the show for this one.

Aziraphale's Anger
Aziraphale makes two very similar three-part facial expressions while he is alone with the Metatron:
Longing and regret as he looks out the window.
A glimpse of rage as he turns to the Metatron.
A mask of smiles or laughter quickly donned to cover the anger.
Look! Here he is looking out the window. Then his mouth compresses very briefly into an angry line as he turns his head in response to the Metatron insulting Crowley for his "damn-fool questions." Then he fake laughs along with the Metatron.
Tumblr media
And again! This one is easier to see because it's slowed. The sad, regretful look out the window. A compression of the lips as he looks down and away. A flash of that determined rage that we'll see again in the elevator as he looks at the Metatron. Then the fake smile. (I looked at these about 50 times before I realized they are from different takes. Perhaps the editors really wanted to show that glimpse of anger).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
gifs by inhonoredglory
He is already so angry at the Metatron for forcing him into this. No Second Coming needed.
I think some viewers have observed this anger but have interpreted it as directed at Crowley. But I really think it's pointed at the Metatron and later at heaven itself as the elevator ride ends.

Aziraphale never chose Heaven over Crowley. Aziraphale chose CROWLEY OVER HEAVEN.
What Crowley saw was Aziraphale choosing Heaven over Crowley, and some imagined, idealized Angel Crowley over the real Crowley.
The fandom at large has lots of interpretations. Aziraphale chose Angel Crowley over Crowley. Aziraphale chose humanity over Crowley. Azirphale wanted Crowley to be happy.
BUT.
Azirphale didn't choose anything over Crowley.
Aziraphale chose CROWLEY. He didn't choose humanity, he didn't choose Heaven, he didn't choose some long-dead version of Crowley. He took a bad situation, and he said, Crowley, you're the only person I trust to help me with this.
The Metatron wasn't going to just leave them be. Aziraphale's not stupid. And so he chose Crowley. He chose Crowley above all the angels he's worked with in Heaven, and said you know what fuck them, you're the one I trust, you're the one I want to work with. He said I know you're a demon and you're supposed to be evil and the enemy but I trust you more than I trust ANY of them.
I NEED YOU.
I need you because I don't trust them. I need you because being there alone will destroy me. I need you to help me make things right.
Aziraphale looked at heaven and saw a problem that needed fixing, and then he said I can't do this on my own, and then he said Crowley, you're the only one I trust.
What Crowley heard was, you're the bad guys. You're a demon, and you'll always be less because you're fallen.
But what Aziraphale meant was, I don't care that you're a demon. You're the only one I trust. Please come back to Heaven with me. I want you by my side in Heaven, because you mean so much to me.
What Aziraphale meant was, fuck the others. I love you.

I found this “draw the squad” base from @croxovergoddess and had to make it Good Omens, for obvious reasons.
Who dares to conspire to keep our lovers apart???
I had way too much fun with this. 😈😇

Why is it always either
"Aziraphale wanted to go to heaven, he was happy and giddy about it, and he never really cared about Crowley anyway, only about Starmaker"
OR
"Aziraphale would have never ever gone to Heaven out of his own free will, he was clearly horribly threatened and forced!"
Why does everyone always have to reach for the extremes?
No, Aziraphale obviously absolutely did n.o.t. WANT to go to Heaven. He doesn't like Heaven, he likes Earth. Even if the other angels weren't all jerks and bullies, which he absolutely knows they are! I mean, duh!
But that doesn't automatically mean he would never have made that decision on his own! I liked the post from the health care worker who wrote that if they were suddenly offered the position of Minister of Health, they would just have to take it, even though they knew that they would be surrounded by awful people and end up fighting and probably losing an uphill battle, being absolutely miserable and frustrated. But they wouldn't be able to look at themselves in the mirror anymore if they didn't at least try. Because they'd feel they failed their duty to their patients.
Was there never anything you really REALLY did NOT want to do but still HAD to???
We absolutely do not need to talk about "Aziraphale not caring about Crowley" here, if that is actually something you really think, please just leave my blog. I don't even know what show were you watching, but it wasn't Good Omens.
Was Aziraphale threatened? Maybe. It's definitely possible. But I don't think so. The Metatron knew exactly what he had to offer, and in which order, to convince Aziraphale. Why unnecessarily antagonise him, he doesn't need to use the stick if he knows how to sell him on the carrot! I don't think the Metatron is that crude.
Which brings me to my next point:
people also seem to wonder about the shared look of contempt between the Metatron and Crowley.
But you realise that the Metatron was there when shit went down in Heaven, right? He knows what exactly it was that led to Crowley falling. Aziraphale might have been a soldier in the war back then, but it is extremely unlikely that in his position he actually witnessed the key moments that started the rebellion.
But the Metatron, the Voice of God, the angel with such a high rank that he is somehow actually outside their hirarchy, did. There might even have been a direct confrontation between the angel with questions and the VOICE OF GOD, who couldn't/wouldn't/didn't want to relate any answers.
And it is safe to assume that Crowley never told Aziraphale any details. In 1862 he still maintained the "sauntered vaguely downwards" fable, in line with his carefully built cool guy image. His drunken monologue after the bookshop fire comes a little closer to the truth ("looky here, it's Lucifer and the guys, [...] food hadn't been that good lately, I'd got nothing on for the rest of that afternoon"), but even here he very much pretends that he never really cared. Now that we have seen the innocence and enthusiasm of Starmaker, we know that's not true. Something big happened to that cheerful worriless angel, something not caused by the Fall, but causing it. The questioning was only the start of it.
There is a strong possibility that Crowley might even have tried to change things himself, back before the Fall, and most likely crashed and burned failed spectacularly. Again, all witnessed directly by the Metatron.
Aziraphale doesn't know that, though. He only has a vague idea about it and a sense of injustice and unfairness. And the Metatron, master-manipulator and -mind, knows that as well.
He also knows that, on the surface obedient but covertly subversive, little soldier angel Aziraphale, probably a lot better than Aziraphale is aware he does. They probably never had any close contact, but who knows what kind of research Heaven can do?
We don't need to go into detail about how he manipulated Aziraphale, other people have done so already. But it is important to state that by offering explicitly the opportunity to change things in Heaven, he got Aziraphale's love for life on Earth and his desire to do good fighting for dominance within him. But he would never have been able to convince him to leave Crowley. So he solves the main conflict for Aziraphale, telling him he could take Crowley with him! Definitely knowing that Crowley absolutely would NOT want that. Awful conundrum avoided!
I am not even saying that Aziraphale didn't know he was manipulated. He didn't know that Crowley's reaction to going to Heaven would be that severe, and he probably also doesn't know that the Metatron very well did, when he made him the offer. But he might have absolutely caught on to the Metatrons manipulating language, his ingratiating and patronising. But still - the opportunity to change things! To actually make Heaven better! Maybe he really did misjudge him! (Let's not forget that Aziraphale's previous experience with the Metatron was a 2-minute-conversation, why should it be so impossible that he changed his mind for the better since then?)
And then all this culminated - aided by millennia of little miscommunications and THE worst timing e.v.e.r. (I am actually more suspicious of Nina & Maggie's role in the whole thing, because there is so much that doesn't make sense about their little pep talk) - in the Final Fifteen. Crowley reacting differently to his news than he thought. Then offering the ONE thing he wants most in the world. But to get it, he would have to say to himself "yeah I WANT this and I'll take it even if Heaven stays the way it is, that's not my problem", and all that in the space of just a few minutes. Putting him on the spot.
Can't you see how "you go too fast for me"-after-being-at-it-for-almost-6000-years-Aziraphale was completely thrown by everything? Didn't you see how close he came to changing his mind after Crowley walked out? Are we sure he wouldn't have, if the Metatron hadn't been there immediately to usher him to his new duty? How is an angel supposed to calm down, think it through, and look at the problem from every possible angle under these circumstances? Having the choice between betraying everything you are to get everything you ever wanted, or losing everything that is dear to you but having done the right thing, and you don't even get a minute?
Again, we have one Fallen Angel who has a most likely violent experience trying to change Heaven. And another Angel who hasn't had the chance to try yet. Of course they're not on the same page. But they also don't really have time to compare notes. Your exactly means something different than my exactly.
And one more thing: Aziraphale's "I forgive you" is a direct callback to their bandstand break-up. He desperately wants this blow-up to be temporary, to end well like the other time. It's the first thing he can think of. It's his way of saying "maybe later", "I can't, not yet", or even "wait for me".
And Crowley knows that, he isn't hurt or offended because he thinks Aziraphale believes he needs forgiveness, he understands perfectly well what his angel is saying. Which is why it is his "don't bother" that breaks my heart. Because that means he (thinks he) is done waiting. He can't do it anymore. He finally put himself out there and his angel still isn't ready. So he's stepping out of their little dance routine.
Yes, Aziraphale walked out the door. But Crowley closed it after him.

The little detail of the Metatron telling Michael, Uriel, and Saraqael that their actions will be dealt with later and it remains to be seen if they will be punished before sending them away while telling Muriel to stay as they may be needed has stuck with me
Just more evidence for the Metatron already knowing the outcome to his "offer"
But what I'm thinking is that the Metatron is going let Aziraphale deal with them - to keep establishing the line that Aziraphale now has power in this new position - why not start with the Archangels that have been his direct superiors who he previously reported to - a very obvious show of power to now have a responsibility over them
However I don't think it will be a decision entirely up to him - maybe with the Metatron suggesting things while they are all together - to show that the Metatron is on Aziraphales side and to establish a line of respect (fear) between the Archangels and Aziraphale - which I think he is going to realized and use to his advantage
But what I think Metatron is going to underestimate when giving this power to Aziraphale is the power of his kindness - the understanding he can provide to all the angels who have ever felt alone, overlooked, unsure - to those who have ever been curious
I mean just look to Muriel who is constantly surprised by praise and is never made to feel dumb by Aziraphale. They have to be reminded that this nice angel is a traitor and just the body language difference between them in heaven and them on earth and they even ask for a book by the end - just because they weren't immediately turned down or made to feel dumb - it's a big difference
So while the Metatron probably knew the outcome going into that conversation and has plans on how to further that narrative - Aziraphale went up to Heaven with his own plans - to make a difference - and now he is determined to prove this was the right decision after everything (and stop the second coming along the way)

This was supposed to be the final part but I hate unresolved angst so I think I wanna continue it a little longer. Would you be interested in a few more parts? 👀
Anyway, Crowley blames himself because of course he does and Azi is having a wonderful time in Heaven masking 24/7 and surrounded by his toxic peers 👍🏻 Everything's just tickety-boo.

the coffee theory
the fact that my friend said that the poison (cyanide) that Metatron put in Azi's coffee has taste of almonds
when Metatron took coffee in a cafe, he asked for oat milk coffee with "a dash of almond syrup" and when he gave Aziraphale coffee, he said that there was "a hefty jigger of almond syrup" in it
also, when Metatron gave Azi coffee, in that moment sound of a miracle was barely audible (so maybe something conjured here) and this rat Metatron whispered something and then looked at the angel so he would drink as soon as possible, this is not normal
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Azi didn't look enthusiastic at first and he had his own position that he didn't want to change, but after he took a sip of coffee, he became excited... although he didn't really want to drink
after the scene in episode 3 where Crowley drank poison from that girl and he started behaving unnaturally became smaller and then bigger and I thought what if the poison has an effect on angels and demons and changes their normal condition
and the pumping music when they left the bookstore .... AND Metatron's look at Crowley was terrifying, but something tells me that they know each other very well.
Tumblr media
( btw i also like theory (palpitibe - user's nickname) that I found here on the tumblr and repost it , this is about the fact that almonds represent purity and that Azi's mind has been cleansed )
if someone already mentioned that guesses I wrote higher, then sorry and tell me bout that bc we all so crazy about good omens right now so our heads is exploding with theorys

My complete and unhinged Metatron analysis
Hello, I have seen that many people are theorizing about Metatron, so I'm here presenting an analysis of who Metatron is, rather his biblical role and how he may be more connected to the Aziraphale and Crowley than we might believe.
-Also, English is not my first language, so please be patient with me-
ANALYSIS OF METATRON AS A FIGURE WITHIN CHRISTIANITY:
Metatron, has always been a controversial figure in Christianity, full of dualisms.
Let's start with its etymologically. The term Metatron has two completely different translations: one comes from the Greek metradromos meaning "he who pursues with vengeance"; or it is also possible that its origin is from the term meta ton thronon which means "closer to the throne". There are many doubts about his true origin, since it is mentioned in non-canonical versions of the Bible, during Genesis*. However, in the most current and official versions of the Bible, it never appears.
While there is nothing official, the most accepted version is that he is actually the prophet Enoch, Noah's grandfather. Enoch -who used to have his own book of the Bible in earlier versions- was a prophet who had the God-given gift of visiting Heaven through different visions. In his 1st vision, Enoch has the mission to intercede with God on behalf of the fallen angels. In another vision, he sees the Cherubim in Heaven, whom he describes as beings of fire. Later, he is taken by the archangel Michael to the highest heaven. Enoch also travels in his visions or dreams to the tree of knowledge. He is supposed to have lived 365 years and, at the end of his visions, Enoch is chosen by God to become the archangel Metatron, a powerful archangel who is also called the little Yahweh.
There is another explanation for his origin: he is the first being of creation, seated at the left hand of the father, which in tradition is associated with Satan.
The Zohar also describes Metatron as "the king of angels" who reigns over the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
When Enoch was on Earth, he devoted himself to writing a book containing the secrets of wisdom until he was taken to Heaven to become an angel. God allowed Enoch to continue this same ministry in Heaven** .
Tumblr media
FUN FACTS:
Metatron was the one who led the Israelites to the Promised Land (Moses).
Metatron is the patron angel of children.
Metatron transmits God's daily orders to the angels Gabriel and Raphael.
Not being an angel from his origin, Metatron is associated with the angels in charge of Death, he supervises them when they help the souls to make their transition from the physical to the spiritual plane.
He is canonically the most powerful archangel in the entire celestial realm, second only to God. His role is similar to Lucifer's original rol, the right hand of God.
The archangel Metatron is in charge of directing the ascension and activation of the human being's light body. Having been human, he knows the path of enlightenment. He represents the potential for transformation and purification of the soul when it sets out to transcend matter to unite with the pure spirit of the Divine. Metatron is in charge of guiding the souls towards the light, towards purity (insert the fact that he asks for coffee with almonds, which in Christianity is related to purification).
Tumblr media
METATRON IN THE LORE OF GOOD OMENS
It is worth mentioning that in the original Good Omens book, Metatron is the only angel that appears besides Aziraphale. While other angels are mentioned, Metatron is the only one who appears, firstly when Zira wants to talk to God, and secondly when Beelzebub and Metatron make presence at the Tadfield airbase to try to convince Adam to restart the end of the world (it is not Gabriel who appears in the book).
And, considering that the 3rd season is based on the sequel to the book that never came out, it makes sense that Metatron would have had a bigger role because he was always a present character.
Tumblr media
HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH CROWLEY AND ZIRA:
So, from all this information, I would like to point out that Metatron not only used to be human and knows the "true path of purification," but he is also in charge of caring the tree of knowledge.
You know, that tree?
Tumblr media
Aziraphale and Crowley represent the two things that oppose his very existence: an angel that is becoming more and more human with each passing day and the Serpent of Temptation that keeps doubting and questioning the edges and the difference between good and evil. These two not only were they not punished, but together they are two extremely powerful entities, perhaps as powerful as he is.
They are a threat… but only together.
Tumblr media
Metatron can see in Aziraphale the very opposite of what he represents, someone who needs to return to the path of divinity:
Aziraphale, the supposed guardian of Eden, who started out as an angel, who gradually transformed into someone with more and more human habits, falling into almost all the deadly sins, in love with the Serpent who tempted humans to eat from the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge. Someone who loves forbidden books and bibles, with a hedonistic and condescending personality who managed to deceive his brother angels for millennia to protect humanity and his earthly life***.
Tumblr media
It would also explain his disdain towards Crowley, why he looked at him with that face: Metatron is the protector of the tree that Crowley managed to corrupt.
Tumblr media
To all this we can add that Metatron/Enoch renounced his humanity to become something superior, while Crowley and Aziraphale consider humanity to be something superior worth defending and loving. They see in humans what Enoch could not see behind his judgment of false celestial purity. They are two supernatural entities who managed to love humanity more than he, a human, ever could.
These parallels are not only born out of my obsession, no. The fact that Metatron has separated them has a much more possible and deep significance.
Narratively, this can only mean one thing: Metatron is the villain, the perfect antagonist to Aziracrow.
Tumblr media
CLARIFICATIONS *Genesis is where the Adam and Eve story is found, the Garden of Eden, the moment that changes Zira and Crowley forever…. **That "book that contained the secrets of wisdom"… is it the book of life? Is Metatron the only one who has access to it? ***I would like to clarify, that for me the real main character of Good Omens is Aziraphale, that's why I find more comparisons with him, followed by Crowley as co-protagonist, but I will continue this theory another day.

Since @drconstellation is mocking my possible assumption about demon!Metatron, I purpose to stop, take a sip of cocoa and think.
WHO THE FUCK IS METATRON?
An autobot idk
Neil said that he "wasn't ever a human" in the GOverse. Okay.
Also Neil said:
The Metatron is at the top, but he wouldn't actually show up on an organisational chart. He's just above everyone, and below God.
Not a word about his being an angel by nature.
And while I admit theoretically that cute bearded old man in final fiftheen MIGHT be a demon, I dont believe it seriously and i dont believe that Metatron has always been a demon. Just someone above everyone and below God.
Well, what we know about M:
He is kinda missing in employee database.
He is definitely not a human.
He never appeared in the office not as floating head.
Aziraphale calls him in s1 via the special divine communication line (the sigil). None of other archangels used it.
Aziraphale doesnt even know in s1 who Metatron is.
As a floating head he hasn't distinguished features of angels (golden glitter, teeth, purple eyes etc.). However, does being a floating head count as a distinguished feature?
Too many weird things.
Somehow he reminds me Death from the show Castlevania. Death was also an immortal being like vampires who was disguised as other immortal being - suspicious vampire Varney. But Death is neither vampire nor human, his nature is radically different.
If M is not an angel, does he belong to the same species that angels and demons are? Or he is totally other spirit?
Or what if he was the first spirit of shades of grey? First angel/demon who went beyond restrictions and reached kinda nirvana? First one who choose his own moral?
