Today is, officially, the last day of 2020 - so it's literally just in time that I'm getting to @aosrecweek's amazing challenge. But that does go to show the nature of this crazy year a little bit, right? Time has just been INSANE, and I honestly cannot believe it's so close to over.
That said, I want to put it out there that everyone - absolutely everyone - who created something in this mad year, is a SUPERHERO. Like. We could have hidden away in dark corners, curled into little balls, and lost touch with our creativity entirely - but instead, we made some of the most fantastic content I have ever seen. And, excuse the language, but that is fucking amazing, of each and every single one of us. We're bloody INCREDIBLE, you guys. We really are.
Now, the rules of this challenge dictate that I've got to start with some of my own things, then repeat with the same number of creations by other people. So I'm going to do that, and I apologise for the sheer length (and self-plug-iness) of what is about to follow - but, bloody incredible, remember? I really mean that. 💜💜💜
My Own:
you could call me babe for the weekend - 19k of Spideychelle being oblivious, mutually pining IDIOTS while being snowed in. And, you know, fake dating. (This thing was SO MUCH FUN to write and though, yeah, it got completely out of control, as evidenced by the 19k, I still really love it.)
'tis the damn season - my first attempt at writing a multi-chap, and, yeah, it only has one chapter as of now, but I really love said chapter. Basically, it's Daisy and Mackelena being friends, and honestly just the BEST friends - I adore the style I managed to achieve in this thing. Plus, the Skimmons I have planned up next is going to be da bomb.
the closest thing - Philindaisy plus fake family. Also; amusement parks. And for a fangirl like me - well, it was pretty much a dream come true to write!
oh valley of plenty - in this fic, I basically told myself, so AoS won't give us Huntingbird in the finale? Fine. I'll just do it myself then - in the fluffiest way possible. And that's exactly what I did - making them, and their kids, be best friends in Perthshire.
maybe life should be about more - a very angsty Skimmons and Daisy-centric AU, focusing on the internalised homophobia Daisy has experienced through her life, and shaking it off (and eventually, y'know, getting together with Jemma.)
and it's dark in a cold december (but i've got you to keep me warm) - Fitzsimmons just make such a supreme pairing for hurt/comfort, what with how insanely well they understand each other and care about each other, so I'm really glad for the Fitzsimmons Secret Santa giving me the chance to write this! Basically, this follows our science duo through a stressful mission on Christmas Eve (so yes, it's a mission fic!!) and realising that the two of them can do anything together.
july second - ahhh, one of my personal favourites to write! Daisy birthday surprise fluff will always be top-notch for me, especially for all the team-as-family fluff you can add in, especially especially that this is set in Staticquake times! Also, it's from Hunter's point of view, which will forever be the most insanely fun thing to write, I do think.
i just wanna be with you - man, I'm such a big royal fan, so getting the chance to write a modern royalty AU for my OTP was nothing short of amazing!! This is Princess Daisy and her fiancée Lincoln Campbell at their official engagement interview
see the line where the skye meets the sea - shameless season 1 bby Bus Kids fluff, featuring movie nights, singalongs and... so much fluff your teeth will rot. Also I'm really freaking proud of the pun in the title okay
'cause all that you are is all that i'll ever need - Huntingbird waking up together fluff (because, fight me, Huntingbird in their sweet moments is one of the sweetest things you will ever get to read or write.) This is also my, fluffy, take on the origin of the Franny's Saloon keychain.
we love you, we love you (and we hope you love we too) - aha, my first polyship fic! Also my first try at some actually fancy HTML formatting (forever thanks to Kat for explaining.) Both of these things combined to form a fic that even I think is ridiculously fluffy and funny, and kinda amazing, at that.
and man I don't know where the time goes (but it sure goes fast like that) - Another Bus Kids movie night fic, but this one set post-season 7, and reflecting on how far they've come. A little bit more hurt/comfort-y than it's pure fluff prequel, but still super fluffy and soft. And, of course, with a happy ending.
she shares my dreams, i hope that someday, i'll share her home - snowy Fitzsimmons fluff, complete with them falling in love at the Winter Olympics, as you do.
then you walked in and my heart went boom - 16k of Dekesy for the wife, and remarkable for that, because literally a month ago from this, I hated Dekesy with my entire soul. Then I started reading Kat's fics, and, well, fell in love with them... so much so that I wrote sixteen thousand words of enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, bed sharing holiday fluff for them.
a love like that - a Fitzsimmons Cinderella AU, featuring my two favourite science babies, in true science bby style, falling in love over science and how stupid the whole courting thing is. Also, Daisy makes a brief appearance, and she's the freaking best.
ever after - ah, probably the one single fic I'm proudest of. A post-season 7 Daisy character study focusing on her emotional rollercoaster re: losing her family/things never being the same again, which just achieves... an emotional level that I have never managed to replicate again. I was full-on sobbing while writing it, and, guys, it also part-holds the Closest To Making Kat Cry prize.
blue - Daisy character study spanning snapshots of seven seasons, and before - but tied together by something blue in every moment. Researching for this, and finding all the blue moments, was very interesting, and immensely satisfying, especially since all the moments where a little bit of blue was present actually combine to chronicle Daisy's journey on the show remarkably well.
who is that girl I see - the one time I decided to write straight angst, and straight angst with no happy ending. Melinda May post-Bahrain, folks.
take my hand, take my whole life too - aww, the first thing I wrote that I really and truly loved. A Staticquake and Fitzsimmons Actors AU, featuring a proposal on set and INCREDIBLE amounts of fluff and softness.
hold out your hand, 'cause friends will be friends - the wife's favourite, and, as second fics go, pretty damn good, if I do say so myself. It's a Soulmates AU for Staticquake and Mackelena, with the focus being on DaisyMack friendship, and lots of denial, angst, and guilt about finding their soulmates. (They figure it out eventually, don't worry - it's me, of course I made them happy.)
Fitzsimmons + Fake Dating moodboard - Fake dating will always be FAB, and picturing it out in a moodboard - especially for my clueless bby best friends in love - was the best, and super satisfying.
Staticquake + Orange moodboard - One of the cooler ideas I had for Trick or Treat (which I still have not finished, heaven help me) was to make a series of moodboards for my OTP plus different colours. This orange one is just so light, and cheerful, and happy, and honestly I kinda adore it.
This Philindaisy + Family Moodboard - making moodboards can be insanely frustrating when you just can't find the photo that fits exactly right. With this one, however, I found all the pics I needed pretty insanely fast, and, better, the whole thing just worked, and really nicely so, too.
This Bus Kids + Baking Cookies moodboard - there's absolutely NO faults to be found with tiny, adorable Skye, Fitz and Jemma concocting choc chip cookies - but I'm actually doing a tiny cheat here, because, cute as my moodboard here is, the accompanying fic by my love @eowima is the SWEETEST and best thing you could ever wish for!!!
This Daisy Johnson Appreciation Week Photoset - Day 3 of Daisy Johnson Appreciation Week focused on an emotion, and I picked confidence and power, because honestly, it's nothing short of amazing how confident and powerful our gorgeous girl has become.
This Daisy Johnson Appreciation Week Photoset - One of the times I wish I could gif, because this quote about struggling though never giving up just suits Daisy perfectly. The photos I found are cool, though, and I mean, it's Daisy, so that's already absolutely fabulous.
Other People's:
I managed to find twenty-six of my own things that I liked enough to put up there (because, yes, I'm that big a dork, 26 things for me being 26 is the way to go :D) Anyway, now that gives me the amazing chance to spotlight twenty-six of my favourite creations by my FANTASTIC mutuals! 😍
To start, my wife - Kat said I couldn't put everything she's ever written on here, so, ugh, I guess I'll just do my top five then. *grumbling* Everything by Kat is on here in spirit, though!!
Chasing Cars (even after the story ends) by @aleksandrachaev - the epic Dekesy roadtrip AU and incredible Daisy character study itself, which, I do believe, finishes today!! Words aren't enough to describe how freaking AMAZING this thing is, or how spectacularly well characterised. Just: if you haven't read this yet, you are missing out. You will laugh, you will groan, you will want to wrap Daisy in a very tight hug, and you will probably cry, too. This fic just has it all, really!
there goes the maddest man this town has ever seen by @aleksandrachaev - the post-season 7 Deke-crashes-the-Framework-Zoom-call fic I didn't know I needed (but spent the next two weeks rereading every single night.) It is absolutely INCREDIBLE, with all the Deke & Team feels we missed in the final outro scene, and honestly just the most fantastic writing. I cannot recommend it enough!
To Box It Up And Start Again (everything must go) by @aleksandrachaev - bloody hell, this BROKE me. Deke never really got to say goodbye in canon, but Kat gave him the chance to do it here. And, my freaking GOODNESS, she made it so incredibly bittersweet and heart-shattering. 10/10
i am a leaf on the wind by @aleksandrachaev - a little bit of a stretched-out, reflective moment in the season 7 finale. As Daisy lingers on the edge of death, she reflects on all the lives she could have had - and, man, what a study in bittersweetness!! This entire fic is utterly incredible, and something I think all Daisy fans should read.
Falling Into Place by @aleksandrachaev - here's a tiny cheat from me (sorry, babes, lmao) because technically this isn't one fic, but a series of three. Way too amazing to miss out on, though!! Set mid-season 7, this has the Chronicoms go after a young Mary Sue Poots to kill Quake before she can become a problem for them. They stop the Chronicoms, yes, but not without a TREMENDOUS dose of feels and hurt/comfort. There's also a wonderful little dose of Dekesy friendship, and then an adult adoption (!!) that honestly made my entire day to read. Actually, that's true for the entire series - I really canNOT yell about it enough!!
destroyer of worlds by @bobbimorseisbisexual - a study in incredible parallels between Jiaying's daughters. Utterly breathtakingly done, this will give you ALL the feels for this small and complex Inhuman family.
Muscle Memory by @robotgort and @bobbimorseisbisexual - a Huntingbird!! Bones!! AU!! And also a collaboration between two of the most fabulous Huntingbird authors in the fandom - honestly, what more can you ask for?! This will make you laugh, and gasp, and wince, and keep you guessing at each new plot twist (and also screaming at your screen for Hunter and Bobbi to get their acts together and TALK ABOUT IT.) In short: it's completely and utterly amazing, and I cannot, cannot recommend it enough!!
You Belong Among the Wildflowers by @libbyweasley - a freaking incredible Scis & Spies Regency AU! I only just started reading, but I was hooked all the way through, especially on the way Libby writes all four characters' complex relationships (and their attraction, and their history!) Everything about it is just completely stunning, and I for one cannot WAIT for these beautiful idiots to figure out they all belong together.
Family Snapshot by @tomatobookworm - if it's family fluff you're after, especially Staticquake family fluff, look no further! This tremendously soft and utterly amazing fic follows a day in the lives of a pregnant Daisy and her husband Lincoln, and their not-so-little family of Inhumans, both adopted and biological. There's also shopping with Grandma May, lots of feels, lots of shippiness, and just AMAZINGNESS all the way through!!
Best Day Ever by @loved-the-stars-too-fondly - Jemma and Daisy want to adopt a pet, and make a very special trip to Wisconsin to do it. Also, whether he knows who he is or not, Jemma has an important question to ask Cal - and just, AHHHH, everything about this is utterly stunning! For starters, Aubrey's writing is FANTASTIC, and the scene she sets is absolutely beautiful, and so very bittersweet. I was actually misting up a little with happy tears towards the end of this - really, I cannot recommend this enough, to any Skimmons fan.
so why don't we go somewhere only we know by @loved-the-stars-too-fondly - more Skimmons (platonic this time, though), more hurt/comfort, and, yes, again, more absolutely INCREDIBLE writing. This one is canon compliant, following a shaken Jemma struggling to sleep after Maveth, and how Daisy finds a way to help her out. Incredibly sweet, tender and BEAUTIFULLY written, this one was an instant favourite the moment I read it!
Unspoken by @anxiouslynumbme - a birthday fic for yours truly, and, honestly, one of the most STUNNING Staticquake introspectives I've read. It follows Daisy and Lincoln in a beautifully tender missing moment in season 3, with them both realising their feelings, and just... AHHHHHHHH, everything about it is utterly incredible!! I cannot, cannot recommend this gem of a fic enough
the thing about water droplets and ruffled hair by @que-mint-tea - here's another fic that proves, once and for all, how good Kat's Dekesy is, because it managed to convert T to write some Dekesy smut. And, oh my GOSH, what Dekesy smut - so goshdarn angsty, but so FANTASTICALLY characterised and written that it leaves you more than a little breathless, and gaping at your screen. The first chapter initially left us on the most HORRIFIC cliffhanger, but then T fixed it, and it's just... this thing is really a whole new level of emotional writing, raw and gripping and intensely perfect for both of these characters. My haw still drops whenever I think of this thing, and how utterly AMAZING it was, so yeah. Fic rec!!!
beautiful stranger, there you are by @justanalto - I do believe I still owe Serena a long and very gushy comment on this thing, because, MAN, does it ever deserve that!! Pipsy and fake dating, with the most HILARIOUSLY incredible writing, plot and characterisation, and honestly just a giddy "askhdfkhsfh" whenever I think back to how much I enjoyed it. Yup, it was that good.
Jumping to conclusions by @eowima - a very special one, because it marks my love Océane's first venture into writing AoS fic! It's an AU of 1x06 (the Fitzsimmons episode of s1) where Fitz does actually jump out of the plane to save Jemma. Realisations of feelings, and some of the most genuinely FANTASTIC Fitz characterisation I've read in a while, follow - and, yup, I was shouting at my screen for them just to get together already. Amazing stuff, really!!
Look into your eyes and the sky's the limit by @eowima - okay, this. This. Another gift for me, and one that I will probably treasure forEVER, because it is just?? so?? utterly?? perfect?? Just for starters, the title is a Hamilton reference - and then the theme of Hamilton references continues into the fic itself, I'm delighted to say. There's also the most BEAUTIFUL, playful Skimmons friendship, and teasing, and then of course the bet about who can make out with their crush first... Staticquake & Fitzsimmons perfection. And all rendered in Océane's delightful, best-thing-ever-to-read writing!! I'm going into a giddy keyboard smash just THINKING about this, so yeah, cannot recommend it enough.
lullabies and clear blue skies by @springmagpies and @bobbimorseisbisexual - okay, I never thought I'd catch myself shipping FitzBobbi, let alone shipping it this hard, but... wow. Maggie and Al teamed up to completely blow me away, and MELT MY WHOLE ENTIRE HEART with the sheer cuteness of this!! It features Fitz, Bobbi and adopting two daughters, and it's just the most tender, beautiful development through that little family - I love it so, so much.
We made all the wrong choices by @browneyedgenius - the winner of the AoS Angst War 2020, how could I not include this one? It is such a well-deserved win, though, whoa - I was sobbing, full-on sobbing, at least twice while reading. It follows the season 5 team through the events of the time-loop, after they failed to save the world - and, oh my gosh, it ripped my heart right out of my chest, but beautifully so. Everything about this fic just hits so hard, and it's written so well - yeah, really a most AMAZINGLY deserved win, for an utterly SHATTERINGLY incredible fic.
I threw stones at the stars (but the whole sky fell) by @nazezdha321 - this is Z showing us all how to write a backstory for a minor character, and write it so well that everyone's hearts break all over again when she dies. This one is about Victoria Hand, and it builds a stirring and profound childhood for her, also making her rise through the ranks of SHIELD and just her entire character mean so much more. Really, fic-wise, this is goals, and I take my hat off to you, Z, 1000%, for writing it.
in which the universe is put together by @besidemethewholedamntime - Rebecca's emotional writing, particularly Fitzsimmons' emotions, is incomparable, and she proves it all over again in this fic. If follows Fitz and Jemma before, after and during the bloodwork, and I just... wow, honestly. The emotion!! And the characterisation!! Absolutely stunning, and honestly all I could wish for in a we-had-time fic.
Agents of SHIELD Season 8 by @egumal - THIS. This, this, this, oh my gosh - as fix-it fics go, this has to be the most spectacular one I have ever read. What it does is find a way - a potentially canon compliant way, too - to bring back Lincoln Campbell, and reunite Staticquake. Basically: just about as season 7 finishes, the Astro Ambassadors get an unexpected visitor from another timeline, who asks them to come help out against Hive. Case in point, Daisy meets her lost love again (... but he has no idea who she is) and also has to relive the Fallen Agent drama. It all gets even more complicated when Kora restores Lincoln's memories, and Daisy meets the full team Deke has assembled around him in the 33 years (for him) that they've been apart... in short, this is one of the most thorough, well-written and downright SHOCKING plot-twist-wise fics that you will ever read, and honestly, saying "I can't recommend it enough" is an understatement. This thing is thd BEST, plain and simple!
Black Roses aren't real (but you and I are) by @ohwriteiforgot - ahhhh, a fic that will always have an incredibly special place in my heart, because it introduced me to one of my best fandom friends. The main focus is on Clintasha, it's true, but it's also a crossover with AoS in the sense that Clint was adopted by Coulson and May. Also, Daisy is his little sister, and their bond is gold. Also - there's Staticquake!! And flower shops!! And rivals to friends to lovers!! All I'm going to say is, what more can you ask for?!
A book to shield my story by @maybebrilliant - Staticquake High School AU, ahhhhhhhh!! There are only two chapters out so far, but the way this is shaping up is making my DAY - with Daisy as the new girl who meets Lincoln and his group of friends, and, though her foster parents are absolutely shit, starts to find actual happiness in a school for the first time in her life. Also - THE REFERENCES. Guys. I'm crazy for those, and in this book, so are my favourite dorks, Daisy and Lincoln - and let me tell you, it's nothing short of the best thing ever.
This AoS Finale Gif Edit by @heysteverogers - AoS really has been the most INCREDIBLE journey through the years, but what's really made it special is the company - and that's summed up perfectly in this gorgeous gifset. Also, the graphics on this are just, ahhhh, stunning - I'm in awe, and I've spent very long periods of time just looking at this thing in a state of heart-eyes.
This AoS Finale Gif Edit by @jemannesimms - combining Auld Lang Syne and the final scenes of my favourite show was a raw emotional - but utterly brilliant experience - for me. It's just so absolutely beautiful, and perfectly suited to the team, and their goodbyes!! Breathtaking editing work here, too.
This Daisy as Peter Parker and May as Tony Stark moodboard by @agentsofcomedyandchaos - ahhhh, a crossover of two of my favourite fandoms!! And what a lovely one, too - the colour scheme, quotes, and just the whole FEEL of this is absolutely genius, and I am guilty of being inspired by way too many fic ideas by it. Stunning stuff!!
And... whoa, that was long, but I really do feel that we deserve a bit of a proper pat on the back after creating such magical content in such a messed up year. So that's the note I'm going to leave you with for 2020, my friends: hell-year or no, look at the absolute beauty we were still able to create!! We really are freaking amazing, guys.

Sibling Council
Tumblr media
A/N: We got to see so much of the intimate council between Jane and Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice, but what do you think Georgiana and Darcy were talking about?
She had been looking at his brooding facial expression for quite a while now and still Georgiana Darcy’s brother had not taken notice of her quizzical look. Not even the stopping of her playing on the piano had arisen his attention. So in her cluelessness Georgiana figured the best way to alert him was to produce an especially unpleasant sound on her instrument.
Indeed, it did work to wake him from his busy thinking. Blinking confused, Fitz focused his gaze upon his younger sister. “Are you quite alright?”
Georgiana chuckled and closed the lid over the keyboard. “I wonder that you would be asking me that question, since you have been the one staring at the floor. Did you discover anything of interest?”
A slight blush colored Fitz’ cheeks in a subtle rose colour. He sighed and walked around the piano to sit down next to his sister on the small stool. There was barely enough space for both of them. But Georgiana managed to scoot over enough to allow Fitz a seat by her side.
The innocent expression of worry on her face made her brother chuckle softly. But the immense sigh that had been trying to find a way out of his chest for hours finally demanded its dramatic entrance. And it didn’t much help to distract Georgiana from her worry. “What is it, Fitz? Tell me. You know, I can handle it. Whatever it is. I am quite old enough for bad news.”
Her big blue eyes were staring at him imploringly and Fitzwilliam Darcy saw it much as his duty not to hesitate much longer with telling her about his heart’s budens. Gently he nudged her with his shoulder. “Now don’t you worry yourself too much. It is not really ... bad news. Though one could argue about that. I haven’t really come to a conclusion myself. All I know is that this state of being is cause for quite a large amount of distress, so I am much willing to tell you all about it in hope for soft-sided council.”
Georgiana was biting her lip to keep from interrupting him with very impolite demands to finally get to the point, but her brother saw the wish to shake the information out of him in her eyes and couldn’t help another quiet laugh. “Georgiana, are you that impatient to get to know about my distractions?”
She threatened to get up from the stool they were currently sharing, making the balance shift much in her brother’s misfortune. He laughed and quickly held on the piano before he could fall off of his seat. The light-hearted expression on his face managed to make Georgiana feel much more in his favor again. She settled back down again and wrapped her arms around the one of his that was closest to her. “Tell me about your thoughts.”
Fitz sighed again and leaned more against his sister, tilting his head in her direction. His report wasn’t uttered easily. “When I was in Netherfield with Charles... I- I might have- it is so that- I met someone.”
Georgiana pulled at his arm, forcing him to look at her astonished expression. “Fitz! Are you telling me, you met someone... special?”
Another shade of red travelled over her brother’s freckled nose at her question and he shifted on the stool uncomfortably. “Someone special. Someone extraordinary. A woman of incredible esprit. I- I can’t stop... she is... I can’t stop thinking about her.”
He ducked his head a little and shook it at himself, a more pained expression now hovering over his features. Georgiana needed a few seconds to process the information given to her. She’d never seen her brother act this shy before. She leaned in closer to him, catching his insecure look. “You are in love?”
He blinked rapidly at that question and gulped, his mouth going pretty dry. But a warmth flooded his chest and stomach and a rare smile suddenly danced over his face. “I- I think I am, yes.”
Georgiana rejoyced gladly at that sentence and almost pushed her brother off the stool yet again as she cheerfully cuddled up against at his side. They were breathing out disbelieving gasps of laughter together, until Georgiana threw her arms around his neck and shouted happily into his ear. “I cannot believe it. In love! You! And I have never seen that woman. I could go mad at that thought. I must get to know her. If she is worthy of your affection, she must be impossibly virtuous. Fitz, Fitz, I must meet her, I must! Oh, tell me everything about her!”
“Only if you stop strangling me!”
Georgiana quickly let go off his neck and took him by the arm as she stood up to get a more comfortable seat on the sofa. She settled down and patted the spot in front of her with red cheeks. Fitz had to smile at her enthusiasm, but couldn’t share it quite so eagerly. He knew there were many obstacles to his love. One of them being that Elizabeth Bennet might well think him to be insufferable.
Still, he was glad to settle down next to his sister and tell her quietly about the brown of Elizabeth’s hair, the colour of her dresses, the ironic glint in her eyes, the intelligent insights and witty jokes she’d made. Georgiana was convinced of her character immediateley and seemed to burst with the wish to meet her.
“Oh, brother, you, in love! I have awaited this day eagerly. Elizabeth. A wonderful name. Have you danced with her? Surely you have, haven’t you?”
Fitz moved his head around uncomfortably. “I have... yes. Once.”
Georgiana looked at him from narrow eyes. “Once? Once?! That is just as good as never. Why didn’t you dance with her more often? You are a wonderful dancer.”
“I am a wonderful dancer with you. Because I trust you.” He looked at his hands as if they were just as interesting as the floor was before.
“And you don’t trust Elizabeth Bennet?”
“I-” Her brother made a vague gesture with his hand. “I just don’t like to be-”
“-happy?” Georgiana raised a brow. Her brother looked at her with discontent and instead suggested the word: “-outgoing!”
“No, you don’t tend to be very outgoing, that is true.” She tapped her chin thoughtfully, as she realized that there were a lot of difficulties in her brother’s behaviour towards others. But a bright smile was back on her features quickly. “But you can be so much fun. There are days where I can barely catch a breath, because you are so funny. Can you not be like that with her?”
Fitz smiled mildly at her and tried to silence the hopefully beating heart inside his chest. “Maybe someday.”
Georgiana nodded thoughtfully and then couldn’t hold back a yawn. Her brother clapped in his hands and stood up from the sofa, holding his hands out towards her. “I think that is the perfect moment to send you to bed, don’t you agree?”
“Absolutely not. I want to talk more about Elizabeth Bennet. I want to talk about her all night.” Georgiana crossed her arms in front of her chest in defense and put her best pout on her face.
Fitz smirked at that and shook his head. “I will definitely not consent to that. Don’t you have riding lessons tomorrow morning?”
“Riding is not nearly as hard as being good at love. Can’t you tell me more about what you’re feeling?”
“I’d rather not.”
“Why not?” Georgiana looked at him sadly.
Fitz tilted his head and grabbed one of her hands in his own, holding it for comfort. “It is painful.”
Georgiana wanted to ask him all about that pain. She wanted to know why love had to be bitter-sweet, but she knew there was no arguing with her brother here. With a dramatic sigh she got off of the sofa and brushed the wrinkles out of her dress. It was an unpleasant feeling for her to leave him in the parlor with a heavy heart. Therefore she tried her best to cheer him up.
“Maybe,” she said with a glint in her eyes, “it is best anyway if you let her see the inner turmoils of your painful emotions. Isn’t a distraught man what most women seek in marriage?”
Fitz raised his eyebrows and looked at her with a warning smile. “Georgiana.”
“I can imagine if she sees how incredibly miserable you are, she will toss all good manners aside, fall to your feet and beg you to marry her so she can see that grimace every day of her life-”
“You are either going to bed now, or I will make you!” With a smile on his face, her brother turned around to pick a read from the shelf behind the pianoforte, acting indifferent.
Georgiana couldn’t hold back a giggle, knowing all too well, he wouldn’t hesitate to chase her throughout every room at Pemberly if she went overboard. Therefore that was exactly what she did. “Oh Mr Darcy, give me another one of your depressed gloomy looks!”
“Alright. Bed time!” He drummed his hands against the shelf to alarm his sister before he turned around and started chasing her. She was off the sofa in no time, squealing and laughing heartily as she tried to reach the stairs before him. He was laughing way more than he usually did and it was a nice change for once as he made especially much noise running after his sister to make her shrieks of joy even louder. He could have easily caught her sooner, but waited until she’d almost reached her room, almost feeling the sweetness of victory until he wrapped his arms around her waist and whirled her around in his embrace.
She gasped for air in between her fits of laughter, making it hard for him to stop at all. But eventually he set her on her feet again and smiled as she quickly took off to reach her bedroom door. She turned around in front of it and gave him her most sincere smile. “See how funny you can be. If she weren’t to fall in love with your foolishness, she would be a fool.”
He shook his head at his sister and waited until she’d disappeared behind her door, before he considered her words. Elizabeth Bennet, liking his foolishness? A thought that would definitely keep him up with a hopeful heart all night long.

Posting late because this one is a bit longer than the others, but here it is, the fifteenth and final part of the 1 Night (+9 Months) series! I’m really sad to see this wrap up, even though it was time, and I’m still astounded that the little one shot I wrote thinking no one would be interested in became so popular and loved by so many people! Thank you so much to everyone who has liked, reblogged, commented, given kudos, subscribed, everything, you all are so fantastic and I love you all!
Now, one last thing - THIS IS NOT THE END, though the main series is coming to an end, I am not done with this universe! I love it far too much for this to be the last time I write about it! That’s all I’m saying for now, but keep an eye out for further information soon!

Nearly finished with the process of preparing for her second attempt at a first date with Fitz, all of Jemma’s focus was now on hoping fiercely that everything would go to plan this time. After everything that they’d been through, didn’t she and Fitz deserve a break, to have one thing go right?
She really, truly hoped so.
Just as she was smoothing the skirt of her dress and double-checking her lipstick in the mirror above the vanity in her childhood bedroom, there was a sharp rap against the door. Excitement zipping through her, she took one last look in the mirror, nodded decisively, then went to open the door and let in…
Charlotte, toting Evelyn on her hip, entered the room as Jemma absently stepped back to allow her inside. She paused just barely inside the room, though, arching an eyebrow at her sister and whistling teasingly. “It’s a good thing Dad’s stuck on bed rest just now, because he’d probably lock you in your room if he saw you wearing that dress.”
Even as she rolled her eyes, Jemma couldn’t help but shoot a worried look in the direction of her mirror. “Is it too much for a first date?” she asked Charlotte anxiously. “Am I giving the wrong impression? Because I’d had a different dress on last time, but Fitz already saw it and –”
Cutting her off there, Charlotte asked disbelievingly, “What do you possibly have to worry about, Jem?” She gave Evelyn a little bounce in her arms, causing her to let out a happy little squeal. “Fitz already knows what you look like naked, in case you’ve forgotten; a little extra cleavage won’t make a difference.”
Jemma threw a little look in her direction, and was about to say something along the lines of not wanting to have this conversation with her baby sister, but was interrupted by another knock before she could. This one was soft and hesitant, and was followed shortly by the muffled sound of a throat clearing before Fitz called, “Jemma?”
Biting her lip to hold back her eager smile, she gave her sister a pointed look of warning. Once Charlotte had held up her free hand to indicate that she was going to be good, Jemma hurried across the room to open the door for Fitz.
He was dressed in much the same way that he had been the last time, slacks and a button-up shirt complete with a tie – but Jemma’s favorite part of Fitz’s appearance had to be way the way his eyes had almost immediately gone wide and his lips had parted to let out an audible breath. Slowly, his gaze scanned the length of her body (and she pretended not to notice the way they lingered a little too long on her chest), before he met her eyes and she saw him swallowing with a bit of difficulty. “Uh…wow, you look…um…” His mumble trailed off there as he blinked a couple of times, then managed to simply blurt out, “wow”, once more.
For a moment, they gazed at each other, sharing shy smiles, but they both jumped slightly at the sound of a snort of laughter from somewhere behind her. Turning in surprise, Jemma found Charlotte now sitting on the edge of her bed, but her sister hastily dropped her gaze to a curious Evelyn now perched on her lap to hide her guilt.
Obviously pretending to have just noticed their gazes on her, Charlotte waved at Fitz then, and promised them both, “I’ve got Evie for as long as you need me to.” Then, much to Jemma’s embarrassment, she winked and added, “Even all night, if I have to.”
Narrowing her eyes, Jemma replied pointedly, “Thank you, Charlotte, I’ll make sure to relieve you of your babysitting duties when we return home.” Once she was facing Fitz once more, her smile was firmly back in place as she asked, “Shall we?”
Fitz was quick to nod in agreement and, fortunately, they didn’t run into anymore of her family on their way out of the house (even more fortunately, Luke had taken Oliver and Grace home to their flat earlier that day, because she could only imagine what her nosy older brother would have to say). When they’d left the house, Jemma led the way to Charlotte’s car, which her sister had so graciously offered to them for the night – along with watching Evelyn for them, it was the reason that Jemma wasn’t more upset about Charlotte’s little comments and teases.
Truly, Jemma knew that her sister just wanted to see her happy. If anything, how she’d been acting as of late was simply Charlotte getting her fill of embarrassing Jemma now, after all the years that Jemma had spent lovingly embarrassing her in front of potential boyfriends.
Once they’d gotten in the car and were headed on their way, Fitz asked curiously, “So, what’s on the agenda for tonight, then?”
Chuckling lightly, Jemma replied playfully, “If you can keep your plans a secret, then so can I.”
His overly dramatic sigh in response had her fighting a smile. “Well now, that’s just not the same thing; I’ve been planning the perfect date for us for years, after all.”
“What?” Chancing a glance away from the road, she gaped briefly at him, wondering wildly what he was talking about. Years? How could that even be possible? He’d just asked her out not a week ago!
She caught sight of him shifting uncomfortably in her peripheral vision, and he cleared his throat before explaining with an awkward laugh, “Ah well, I meant for that to be funny, but…” Releasing a heavy sigh, he explained, “I was…I’d planned on asking you out, y’know, after…the wedding. But, when you didn’t show up at Bobbi and Hunter’s…”
Even though she saw him shrugging it off as nothing, Jemma couldn’t even begin to form a response to his admission. Fitz had wanted to ask her out for almost two years? Fitz had been romantically interested in her for that long? But, because of her and her ridiculous need to avoid situations that pushed her too far out of her comfort zone or embarrassed her, situations that she couldn’t control, he never even had the chance.
Just then, her mind began to race as she imagined what it would’ve been like if they’d been together this whole time. Things could’ve been so different…
“Jemma?” Fitz called her name gently, dragging her out of her self-deprecating, downwardly-spiraling thoughts then. “It doesn’t matter, alright? We just…took the scenic route here, that’s all. I mean, maybe it was for the best that it happened this way. I’ve rather enjoyed getting to know you as a friend over the past year and a half.” He reached out to place a hand lightly on her arm, his skin instantly heating hers, and he went on, “The important thing is that we got here eventually.”
Forcing back all of the ‘what if’s and ‘might’ve been’s, Jemma eventually managed to nod in agreement. “That is what’s important, you’re right.” Despite her words, though, she couldn’t help the sharp feeling of loss deep in her gut. But, she pointedly ignored it, and focused instead on the happy feelings of earlier, of being on a date with Fitz, finally.
It wasn’t too much longer before they arrived at the restaurant she’d chosen previously, and when they’d been seated and had ordered, a silence began to descend upon them. Every once and a while, they’d catch each other’s gaze and share shy, giddy smiles, and much to her disbelief, Jemma found that she almost felt nervous.
At that moment, they locked eyes accidentally, both their faces flaring bright red, then simultaneous laughter burst from them. “This is ridiculous, isn’t it?” Jemma asked, shaking her head. “We have a child together, after all, it’s not like we’re strangers just meeting for the first time.” Gesturing across the small table toward him, she added incredulously, “I’ve seen you throw up; there’s not much else left, is there?”
Fitz gave her a mock-indignant glare, reminding her pointedly, “Evie threw up first, and it wasn’t my fault.” Arching an eyebrow and chuckling he shot back, “And I’ve seen you give birth, so.”
Laughter erupted from them once more, and when the mirth had faded a bit, Jemma questioned contemplatively, “What are you supposed to talk about on a first date when you already know each other completely?”
In response, he gave a clueless little shrug, then asked curiously, “Did you see the pictures Evie made with Gracie the other day?”
Jemma’s eyes widened and she nodded excitedly, leaning closer as she admitted, “I’d never realized that colorful scribbles could make me so proud!”
Chuckling and nodding in understanding, Fitz arched his eyebrows and confessed, “I’ve already got a folder full of ‘em.”
“Perhaps we should start some kind of scrapbook,” she offered thoughtfully, “for the ones that we don’t hang up on the refrigerator or frame for our desks, of course.”
“Yeah, and maybe I should send some to my mum. Seems like something she’d want to have.”
“Oh, you should, she’d love that,” Jemma encouraged, before she added, “You know, I was actually talking to your mum the other day.” When Fitz raised a surprised, curious brow, she explained, “She was checking in on how my dad was doing, and then we ended up talking a bit about the holidays, since they’re coming up in a few months. What do you think of spending Christmas in Glasgow this year, then New Year’s in Sheffield?”
“But Oliver and Gracie would miss us terribly,” Fitz pointed out, his brow furrowing in concern.
Jemma frowned in thought, but it wasn’t long before the perfect solution occurred to her and she beamed excitedly at him. “Why don’t we have your mum come to Sheffield to join us, then? My parents have been dying to meet her, after all.”
“Well, that’s a wonderful idea,” he replied, though he still looked a bit unsure, “as long as your family doesn’t mind, that is.”
She was quick to wave away his concerns. “It’ll be fine; my family welcomes in just about everyone. Besides, it’ll be good for Evelyn to have all of her grandparents together – since she’s getting older, she’ll be starting to retain memories, and I want them to be of her family all together.”
Jemma had barely finished speaking when their waitress returned to their table, dropping their meals off. They both thanked her, but the young girl hesitated, then smiled and asked, “How long have you two been married?” Before either of them could manage a response, she went on, “It’s just always so nice to see couples still going out on date nights, even after being together for so long.”
As Jemma shared a surprised look with Fitz, all she could seem to think of was the woman in the grocery store all those months ago, the one that had also automatically assumed that she and Fitz had been a couple for some time. However, this time, she wasn’t being blindsided by feelings that she didn’t recognize for what they were, and instead she felt a slightly embarrassed but ultimately pleased blush heating her cheeks.
“We’re actually on our first date,” Fitz finally told the girl, giving her a small smile.
She flushed visibly, hastily apologizing, “Oh, I’m so sorry, I just thought…”
“It’s alright,” Jemma assured her gently, “it’s a completely understandable mistake to make. Truly, you have nothing to be sorry for.” As the girl apologized once more, then hurried back to the kitchen, Jemma turned back to Fitz, and they both dissolved into laughter yet again. Shaking her head in disbelief, she asked wryly, “We’ve skipped right over new couple to old married couple, haven’t we?”
Still chuckling, Fitz replied, “I’m sorry to say that it appears we have, yes.”
Offering him a little smile, she shrugged one shoulder as she murmured, “That’s not the worst thing in the world, is it?”
His cheeks turned an adorable shade of pink as he shot her a tiny smile of his own across the table. “No, I suppose that it isn’t.”
-
After they’d finished their dinner, Jemma had suggested they take a walk through a nearby park to digest their meals. Though, she thought a bit absently to herself, her stomach seemed to be doing more than digesting just then, given the pleasantly squirmy feeling that had resided there ever since Fitz had taken her hand in his and laced their fingers together.
Out of the blue, Fitz broke the easy silence between them to say, “I can’t ever regret what happened between us at Bobbi and Hunter’s wedding, even though I know you’re supposed to regret the dumb decisions you make while you’re drunk, but…I dunno, I wish sometimes that we’d…done this all right.”
He sounded utterly guilty and defeated, and Jemma understood at once what he wasn’t saying – not that he could ever regret having Evelyn, but that he’d wished they’d gone about the situation in a different way, what was considered to be the “right” way. “I know,” she murmured, giving his hand a supportive little squeeze, letting him know that he wasn’t the only one who occasionally had those thoughts.
Sighing softly, he clarified, “I know what I said earlier, and I still stand by it, but…but I imagine sometimes what it would’ve been like, y’know? I mean, I would’ve gotten your number from Hunter, if he didn’t give me too hard a time about, that is. I’d have called you a few days after the wedding, so that you’d hopefully still remember me, and I’d have asked to see you again. If you’d said yes, I would’ve taken you on that date. And, if you’d still be interested after, then I would’ve taken you another and another and another until…perhaps, maybe, someday far in the future, Evelyn could’ve come along into a family that was ready for her, to parents that didn’t have to hide how they felt for the other or constantly worry about putting her at risk if they pursued said feelings.”
Her heart aching slightly in her chest at the wonderful idea of what could’ve been, Jemma admitted lowly, “I’ve thought about it too, Fitz. Sometimes, I feel truly awful for the situation we unknowingly brought Evelyn into, even though we made the most of it. But, most of the time, I just feel foolish for ever thinking that we could raise her as friends and have everything work out perfectly, that things wouldn’t get messy and…” She let her sentence trail off there with a quiet sigh, resting her cheek against his shoulder. “Despite all of that,” she finished in a murmur, “I’m still quite happy with where we ended up.”
“Me too,” he agreed, matching her tone, though he lowered his voice further to say, “I think, maybe…this was always where we were supposed to end up, that we really were fooling ourselves thinking that we could stay just friends.” Giving a little laugh, he gestured to her with their joined hands and added, “I mean, just look at you.” Jemma laughed outright at that, burying her face in his shoulder. Once they’d quieted back down, though, he said seriously, “I don’t want to wonder about what could’ve been anymore, though. From this moment on, we should focus only on the here and the now, on the future that we do have ahead of us. We should be happy with the fact that, despite the bumps in the road and all the hiccups, we’ve ended up here.”
Lips curving into a warm smile, Jemma nodded slightly against his shoulder. “I agree – no more thinking about the past and all the different decisions that we could’ve made. Evelyn’s a year old now, she’s growing and getting smarter with every passing day, and we’re together now, however that’s going to look in the future. We’re all together, and we’re a family, and that’s all that I need.”
With a gentle squeeze of her hand within his, Fitz whispered, “Me too.”
-
When they arrived back at her parents’ house sometime later, it was mostly dark inside as they stepped through the front door, no one else left awake at the late hour. After Jemma had made sure to shut and lock the door behind them, she turned back around to face Fitz, only to find him right there, and her breath caught in her throat.
Her back lightly hit the door, and she felt Fitz’s calloused palm cupping her cheek as her knees grew weak, making her glad that she had the solid door to support her weight. She’d been waiting to kiss him again for months now, and she could almost swear that her lips were aching to be pressed against his just then.
Bless him, he seemed to be waiting for her permission to make that final leap across the distance between them, even though they were raising their child together, even though they’d all-but agreed to spend the rest of their lives together, even though they’d spent the night talking about how much they’d wished to have been together sooner, and Jemma breathed, “Kiss me, Fitz.”
As her eyes were fluttering shut, she heard his breath hitch. Another moment passed, the space of a heartbeat, then she felt his lips brushing against hers in an achingly sweet, soft kiss. Her hands came up to clutch at the material of his shirt over his ribs, and she gave him a little tug, trying to pull him closer, asking for more – she wanted all of him, because he was hers and she was his and she was tired of being apart from him.
Fitz broke away just a bit, just enough for her to feel his breath feathering against her lips, then he moved back in, tilting his head to catch her lips with a bit more force. Jemma made a pleased sound against his mouth as his lips parted over hers, the tip of his tongue tracing along her bottom lip. They hadn’t kiss like this since the night of the wedding, and she’d almost begun to think that she’d built up his kissing skills in her memory. But this was everything that she’d remembered and more, and it was perfect.
She leant into him, sliding one hand up his chest and along the curve of his shoulder, cupping the back of his head and tangling her fingers in his short curls, keeping him close (as though he had any intention of leaving, something she seriously doubted). As she tugged his bottom lip between both of hers, dragging her teeth along the sensitive skin, his free hand flew up to grip at her hip, then trail over it to clutch at the small of her back.
Just as Jemma was beginning to sneak her tongue past his lips to seek out his, to seek out his taste and his heat, a sharp but familiar cry broke through the pleasant fog currently filling her head.
She pulled back from him so quickly, her skull cracked against the door behind her, and she hissed in pain even as the cry sounded again. As a heavily-breathing Fitz reached up to gently caress the back of her head, he pointed out unnecessarily, “That’s Evie,” and he took a moment to try and catch his breath before he added, “She must’ve heard us coming through the door a few minutes ago.”
Nodding in wordless agreement, Jemma tried to slow her own breathing, fixing her dress where it had ridden up slightly. Reluctantly, she separated from him, then moved to climb the stairs to the second floor, going down the hall to Charlotte’s old bedroom. Through the half-open door, she could see her sister sitting on her bed, quietly trying to shush Evelyn back to sleep.
Knocking gently on the doorframe and stepping inside, Jemma informed her lowly, “We can take over from here. Thank you, Charlotte.”
Charlotte glanced up in surprise, then winced apologetically as she explained, “She woke up and I wasn’t either of you, so…” As Jemma shook her head to indicate wordlessly that it was alright, she handed Evelyn off to her. As Evelyn’s cries almost immediately began to peter out, she asked, “How did it go tonight?” However, then her gaze strayed over Jemma’s shoulder and a smirk began to play on her lips. “Never mind, I can already see that it went pretty well.”
Confused, Jemma glanced over her shoulder, only to find that in the dim light of Charlotte’s room, it was easy to see the smudges of her lipstick around Fitz’s mouth. Heat surged through her cheeks, but despite the embarrassment, there was a smile tugging at her lips as she assured her sister, “It went very well, actually.”
-
When Jemma’s eyes opened the next morning, it was to the sight of early morning sunlight slanting through the blinds of her old bedroom. The space of the next few moments was more than enough for the events of the previous night to return to her, and she had to bite her lip against the grin that threatened to break through.
Rolling carefully onto her side, she caught sight of Fitz lying there beside her, still fast asleep with his head on his pillow, blankets tangled around his waist, and one arm flung protectively over where Evelyn had fallen asleep between them. For an indefinite amount of time, she simply gazed at the two people that she loved more than anything, and couldn’t feel anything but so, so lucky to have them in her life.
After some time, however, she heard Fitz’s breathing change, and he shifted a bit on the mattress, then his eyes cracked open. His gaze flicked about the room sleepily, and when it finally met hers, she murmured, “Good morning.”
“’Morning,” he replied in the sleep-roughened voice that she was quite used to by now, but that hadn’t lost any of its affect on her despite that.
“I’m sorry for how we were interrupted last night,” she said suddenly, having spent quite a bit of time the previous night and just that morning wondering what would’ve happened if Evelyn hadn’t woken up wanting them, if their kiss had been allowed to go on even just a bit longer.
Carefully, Fitz lifted his hand away from Evelyn to wave away the apology, assuring her with a low chuckle, “Doesn’t matter, it was still perfect. And besides, how many people can wake up after a first date with said date and their gorgeous daughter?”
Smiling playfully, Jemma admitted, “Not many.”
Finding her hand over Evelyn’s back, he told her warmly, “Really Jemma, I had a great time last night.”
“Me too,” she replied, lowering her voice to a whisper as she went on, “Being with you…it’s made everything so much better over the past year.”
“No,” Fitz disagreed, giving a little shake of his head, “that’s all you, Jemma. I didn’t have a life before I met you; it was all work and spending nights alone in my flat or maybe sometimes going out with Hunter when he wouldn’t take no for an answer, but…but that wasn’t much of a life, was it? You…you just make everything better, brighter, more…brilliant, just by being with you.” His eyes grew soft then, but also…heated in a way that had Jemma’s insides knotting up in a strange and wonderful way, had her breath coming with a bit more difficulty. “I love you, Jemma.”
Sucking in a sharp breath, Jemma could feel tears building in her eyes almost instantaneously at the words she’d been wanting to hear for so long now, the words that she was desperate to let out of her own heart. She squeezed his hand perhaps a tad more tightly than she would have normally and laughed tearfully. “I love you too, oh, I love you, Fitz.” She really, truly, never wanted to be apart from this man again, the feeling stronger than it had ever been, and…and then she added in a rush, “Move in with me.”
Fitz was clearly startled by the abrupt proposal, and asked bewilderedly, “What?”
Letting out another watery laugh at herself, at the mingled joy and nerves inside of her, she explained hurriedly, “Your lease is ending soon, isn’t it? Give your notice to your landlord, move your things to mine, just…move in with me. You practically live there already, and it just makes more sense and…and I love you, I want you to be there, always. I want you with me and with Evelyn, I want us to be a family, finally, completely.”
A shaky breath left his lips, then his whole face seemed to light up as he carefully leaned across Evelyn to kiss Jemma, lifting their joined hands to rest against her cheek. Lips still pressed to hers, he whispered, “Of course, of course yes, I love you.”
The disbelieving laughter that spilled from them then seemed to be enough to wake Evelyn, who was tired and grumpy as she usually was in the mornings, cuddling up against her mother’s side to try and prolong her sleep. But, Fitz just scooted closer across the mattress, wrapping his arms around them both, and Jemma had never in her life felt happier, had never felt more like she was where she belonged than she did in that moment.
What she could no longer believe was once the worst mistake of her life she could now see had actually been the first step to finding true happiness, and as Jemma pressed her cheek to Fitz’s chest to hear his heart beating and stroked Evelyn’s soft cheek with her fingertips, she knew that after spending so long hiding and struggling and hurting, she was finally home.
