so i’m rewatching to prep for s2 and i just noticed that in ep4 Stede’s tirade to Mary about the “monotony” is directly followed by Ed’s rant to Izzy about how “it’s all so fucking boring” (with the model ship serving as a point of contention in both scenes, more symbolically with Ed and Izzy but Izzy is literally holding it for the whole conversation and he and Mary are both rejecting the idea it represents) and i’m just going insane over the show literally saying “Izzy is Ed’s WIFE and he has been SCORNED for accepting the LIFE THEY SHARE” and it’s actually kinda more tragic because Izzy actually likes the life they have whereas Mary was just resigned to it and i can’t do it y’all-

also Ed saying “I haven’t died yet, have I? We should try that.” like it’s just assumed that Izzy would be dying with him (and he’s not wrong) i’m frothing at the mouth

Izzy has been at Ed’s heels catching scraps for YEARS. He loves Ed and it’s already been established in the first three episodes this season that he has come to Jesus on a few things regarding Ed and Stede. That Stede bringing the softer side out of Edward CLEARLY was not the worst possible thing (sure, it took Ed going full Kraken and making life hell for everyone on The Revenge for that to sink in, but he got there) and that his love of Edward, perhaps, DOES extend beyond the Blackbeard persona. He might not have even understood the KIND of love he had for Edward until seeing the mirror that is Stede held up to it.

And so, now it looks like we’re going to get a blossoming NEW dynamic between him and Stede, the OTHER man in love with Edward. His former competition. I say former, because I feel like Izzy might in fact have given up on Ed being his. He still loves him, but he loves him enough to accept that Stede is the one who will make him happy and he WANTS to see him happy. And it’s looking like there’s a possibility that viewing Stede through that lens might result in Izzy developing deeper feelings regarding him. Maybe he will find himself loving the one who makes the other one he loves happy. Maybe he’ll find himself caught in the middle of that while Ed struggles with how he mistreated his first mate and repairing things with Stede. Maybe Ed will see Izzy and Stede’s relationship growing and discover that a way to heal and make things right is to allow room for that. Maybe he’ll see that Izzy is learning to love in a way that is less possessive, controlling, repressed, and compartmentalized. That he’s growing to love Stede, even, and Ed has a deep understanding of what it means to love Stede, so it becomes something for them to bond through and heal through. Maybe the three of them come to some kind of understanding and it /isn’t/ totally incomprehensible that the three of them can move forward together somehow in a way that isn’t toxic. I’m not saying Steddyhands, necessarily, but a strong friendship built on love and good will.

Although, if banging out some of the sexual tension at first is necessary to move past it, be it the three of them or just Stizzy, I would be able to die happy. 😌

i could spit out some rant about this fandom having the media literacy of a single-celled organism.

however, i think that we have enough negativity in this community regarding this season as it is. so instead, i’d like to say a few words regarding why this season was perfect to me.

queer people are told they’re nothing their entire lives. we are killed, harassed, and treated like pests. ofmd tells us that even if you’ve fucked up. even if you’ve been a bad person. even if you’re “broken”. you still deserve to be loved. ofmd fucking proves them wrong.

maybe everyone didn’t get the happy little ending y’all hoped for. maybe there was heartbreak. but goddamn you if everyone in this show wasn’t loved.

Parenthood

At first neither of you caught on. It wasn't very direct and no suspicion rose from anything they said. It just went over your heads. You assumed it was the crew just being the crew.

Then you caught on. The family dynamic, or as much as you can have one on a ship, really started to show. The crew were coming to you for advice. They were bringing questions your way. At first you thought it was because you were the first mate. Then the "thank you ma/da" started and that's when you knew.

You accepted it.

You allowed it.

It made you feel warm in your heart. They saw you as family, and you saw them the same. Before it was an unspoken dynamic. Now it was really happening out in the open.

You liked it.

Izzy was so fucking confused. You had caught on before he did, but when he realised what they were saying and doing, he was so fucking lost.

The crew would send you to him to ask for things because they didn't want to get yelled at. They knew he wouldn't yell at you. Dad loved his partner too much to ever get mad them for anything.

Then it really became obvious.

"Ma/Da said it was okay for us to have a lunch break."

"Ma/Da said we could have shore leave soon."

"Ma/Da brought us some treats for the night watch."

Izzy eventually cornered you in your shared quarters. You were sorting some maps when he entered. His eyes never left your form as he closed the door behind him and walked over to you. You were so focused on the maps that you didn't even realise he was there until his hands settled on your hips.

He chuckled at the way you jumped. You turn around in his arms and smile.

"Hey Izzy!"

He sighs softly as he looks at you. "What is happening to our crew?" He asks softly.

"What do you mean?"

He looks you in the eye. "I mean, why are suddenly parents?"

You chuckle when you realise what he is asking. "Oh. Yeah, I don't know, but I like it. It's cute."

"Cute?"

You nod. "You don't like being a dad?"

Izzy looks absolutely bewildered. "I didn't sign to be their dad. I'm their captain!"

You chuckle again. "They see you as a father figure. Is that really so bad?"

He sighs again.

"Izzy, it's sweet. They trust us. They love us."

"I love you."

You grin. "Love ya too, you silly fool."

"Never thought I'd ever be a dad," he says softly.

"No? Never saw yourself having a family one day?" You ask, caressing his cheek gently.

"Didn't think I'd live this long."

You frown. "Don't say that."

Izzy's expression softens and he leans into your touch. He felt bad for even saying that out loud, but it was true. That's how he felt.

"This is our family. Own it." You give him such a gentle smile. His heart feels like it could beat right out of his chest.

"You're my family." He says that in the most broken little voice you had ever heard from him.

"Oh Izzy..."

You wrap your arms around him and hold him close. He returns the gesture, desperately needing this hug. He clings to you like a lifeline. You press a gentle kiss to his head.

You both stay like that for a little while. Izzy finds comfort in your arms. You're his safe space. His safe person.

It will take him a bit of time, but he will grow to love the family dynamic. He will own the father title. One day he will hear them call him 'Dad' and he will smile.

For now, he needs your help to get him there.

Literally, imagine the outrage in the fandom if Izzy fans started shittalking Stede or Ed or Lucius (or or or) in their character tags the way yall do ours. And we’re just expected to sit quietly with that? We’re not allowed to be upset or annoyed by that? Suddenly we’re cunts if we tell yall something for coming into our house and shitting on our floors? Make it make sense.

There’s so much I could say (And have said! In private! Where people who would be hurt/take offense can’t see it! Like a decent person!!!) about all yall’s faves and yet!

I know yall don’t have to block new people with the same fucking recycled takes every day like we do. I know yall don’t have to worry about someone you liked who was neutral on the character previously deciding they wanna side with the assholes who’ve been harassing you and yours for a whole year now (Oh, wait, yall don’t get that harassment do yall?
