Escenas de The Public Enemy (Wellman, 1931)

Compendio de imágenes en las que James Cagney nos retiene su llanto, pasando por un amplio abanico de sentimientos.

En las dos primeras imágenes, vemos la reacción del actor ante la noticia de una muerte de un amigo. El plano medio de su reacción pasa instantáneamente a un plano general en el que nos dificulta ver su rostro. Nos encontramos aquí de nuevo ante la constante del problema en estos años y para toda esta generación de stars masculinas de mostrar sus emociones más vulnerables.

En la tercera imagen, tenemos otro ejemplo de cómo se enmascara ese proceso lacrimógeno que apenas nos permite ver la lágrima en el rostro tapado de James Cagney. Esta vez la emoción llega por la reconciliación fraternal ante su hermano (en el final de la película).

Y las dos últimas imágenes, nos sitúan a un Jaes Cagney bajo la lluvia (nos remite como símbolo nocturno y revelador a la escena de Gary Cooper en Sergeant York), y cómo la rabia contenida por la muerte de su amigo se apodera de su rostro. No le cae la lágrima pero sí vemos su insoportable tormento del que necesita una vía de escape en forma de venganza.
