The White Label Auction in Aid of The BRIT Trust – the world’s only known auction of “white label” test pressings – takes place next week on Tuesday, 6th June 2023. This year it will have more than 200 lots of highly collectible ‘white-label’ test pressings – the most offered in the four editions of the auction to date since it began in 2019.

The online/on-site auction is once again being hosted by music memorabilia and vinyl records specialists Omega Auctions from their Newton-Le-Willows (Greater Manchester) base. The full catalogue can be accessed here.

Fans and collectors can bid from a huge selection of white label test pressings that rarely come to market, with some even signed by the artists such as The Cure, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, New Order, and Wilko Johnson.

The UK’s record labels led by Universal Music UK, who founded the event with the BPI, along with BMG, Domino Recordings, Cherry Red, Sony Music Entertainment UK, Warner Records and others, each year join forces to curate a broad selection of white label auction lots to raise funds for the vital work of music industry charity The BRIT Trust – which promotes education and wellbeing through music and the creative arts to support causes that include the BRIT School and Nordoff and Robbins.

In January the BPI reported that vinyl albums had recorded a 15th year of consecutive growth in the UK, with over 5.5m LPs purchased in 2022. This rising demand for vinyl has in turn resulted in a growing archive of white label test pressings – so called because there is no sleeve artwork at this early stage – which record labels produce ahead of the full release of an album to ensure its audio quality. With only a handful produced, these first-off-the-press copies are snapped up by collectors on the rare occasions they become available, as evidenced by the huge interest in the three White Labels Auctions to date, which between them have raised around £100,000.

Field Trip to the Zoo!

I swore we wouldn’t go again. But after studying zoo animals, and watching that Disney show about the behind the scenes, Kira really wanted to visit again. When I saw that the Denver Zoo had a free day on Tuesday and the weather forecast called for 76 degrees, I floated the idea to Jamie. He quickly got on board, so we made an afternoon trip.

They loved it! Jamie must have said “This is so cool!” 5 times while visiting the Tropical Discovery exhibit, and Kira expressed a similar comment easily 3 times. Turtles, snakes, fish and amphibians were big hits. They also loved the lions, gibbons, and elephants, and Kira enjoyed seeing a Komodo dragon after writing a report about them last month. Whew - it turns out we can enjoy field trips when we do them correctly!

Comic Con 2022 Trailer Overview

Lots of highly anticipated horror and superhero trailers have been unleashed upon us:

Day Shift: Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco fight vampires. No, really. It does look funny.

Me Time: Stay-at-home dad (Kevin Hart) hooks up with a wild and crazy buddy (Mark Wahlberg) on his one weekend to himself. Again, looks funny, and it’s Netflix, so I’ll watch.

Breaking: Desperate war vet (John Boyega) tries to rob and bomb a bank. Based on a true story, and somebody BETTER nominate John Boyega for some awards...

The Silent Twins: The story of June and Jennifer Gibbons (Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance), who spent years being institutionalized because they refused to communicate with anyone except each other, and wound up writing stories. It may seem like an inspirational story, but from what I’ve read about them, it’s actually another heartrending example of how society fails children, especially Black children.

Prey for the Devil: An exorcism school run by nuns. Self-explanatory.

Halloween Ends: Will it REALLY be the last one? Somehow, I doubt it.

Jeepers Creepers Reborn: How many of these movies are they going to make?

Orphan: First Kill: Yes, the long-awaited prequel, and that’s amazing considering how Isabelle Fuhrman is still supposed to be playing a little girl (or passing for one) when she’s 25. Then again, this is Hollywood, they can de-age people with CGI now.

Till: The murder of Emmett Till, a reminder that sometimes history is more horrible than any horror movie.

She Said: Yes, I recognize the hypocrisy of Hollywood making a biopic about how Harvey Weinstein was brought down. It still looks like a movie worth watching.

Shazam: Fury of the Gods: MUST SEE!

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: Screw the stupid Avatar 2 trailer, this is a true masterpiece! The editors and cinematographers deserve the mother of all raises.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: While the first attempt at a movie sucked, this one looks like it’ll be entertaining. 

John Wick 4: As long as no dogs die, I will be eager to see this.
