Song Review: Grateful Dead - “Broken Arrow” (Live, June 13, 1993)
Fair warning for non-Dead Heads: listen to the Gratefuls’ version of “Broken Arrow” for the feeling of the vocals, not the tonal quality.
In doing so, you can hear the passion lead singer, bassist Phil Lesh, and background dude, Jerry Garcia, put in to this Robbie Robertson solo track as performed June 13, 1993, in New York and released as the latest addition to the band’s “All the Years Live” video series.
Lesh can’t - never could - sing, yet we loved him for doing so. And the post-Brent Mydland Grateful Dead lost a lot in the harmony department when they lost Mydland. But the balladic and graceful “Broken Arrow” was always a welcome comer when Lesh would call the tune toward the end of the long, strange trip.
It was about the feeling.
Speaking of which, and though they didn’t say so, this video was clearly unearthed as a tribute to Robertson, who died Aug. 9 - 28 years to the day after Garcia’s death - at 80.
Grade card: Grateful Dead - “Broken Arrow” (Live - 6/13/93) - B+

This version of the song, featuring children from the village singing the chorus with the guitarist and producer of Dylan's album Infidels (1983), Mark Knopfler, was released on December 9, 1996, in the United Kingdom and reached No. This has been, according to some sources, one of the few times Dylan has officially authorized anybody to add or change the lyrics to one of his songs. In 1996 and with the consent of Dylan, Scottish musician Ted Christopher wrote a new verse for "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" in memory of the schoolchildren and teacher killed in the Dunblane school massacre. ^ Shipments figures based on certification alone.ĭunblane tribute "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" Axl Rose – lead vocals, backing vocals, pianoĭecade-end charts Chart (1990–1999) The music video for this version of the song was directed by Andy Morahan. Reposted @steelyworks Jerry! Big time excited about this one. I have loved Garcia since I was a kid and put a ton of love back into this piece over the past couple months, trying to pay a nice tribute to this mighty spirit. I’ve always wanted to do a split fountain and this felt like the right time, so we have this version (275) and two variants will be available. Variant 1 is a one color on French’s beautiful Pop-Tone Orange Fizz (175) – Variant 2 (150) is a one color over rainbow foil. All three 18x24” and printed by the wizards at Monolith Press. It was a pleasure to get to work with @bottleneckgallery again and the Garcia Estate. Head to Bottleneck Gallery website tomorrow @ 12pm EST to pick your print up. Each print will look much better than the images you’re seeing above! #jerrygarcia #gratefuldead #steelyworks (at Bottleneck Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp0ZNFWJkGz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Song Review(s): Dead & Company - “Playing in the Band” -> “Deal” & “Sugaree” (Live, June 9, 2023)
After the vocals had concluded & Dead & Company began “Playing in the Band” for real, the sextet locked into a sinewy jam that - while not the most mind-blowing thing in the world - obviously happened organically. It was the kind of musical hijinks that’s possible only after lots of time spent onstage & made the fact the group is in the midst of its Final Tour seem quite sad indeed.
But then, Bob Weir’s famous number segued into John Mayer leading the charge through “Deal” & the Grateful Dead spinoff morphed into a Grateful Dead tribute band - the same thing was true of the second-set-opening “Sugaree,” which together made up the livestream giveaway from the band’s June 9 performance at Chicago’s Wrigley Field.
youtube
With Mayer inhabiting the songs so associated with Jerry Garcia, the idea of the Final Tour seemed less depressing. They were well-played, poorly sung & proved this group has nothing left to add to these numbers.
Pliable in the extreme, the Grateful Dead songbook is uniquely suited to new configurations & the likelihood that Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann - who bolted Dead & Company right before the tour - & Phil Lesh and his Friends will continue searching for the sound, leaves hope the long, strange trip will find a new path with new players.
& in any event, Dead Heads are lucky these guys are still playing this music, even when it simply reminds them of what cannot be recreated.
