-Riley’s POV-

Home… I was finally home. Out of that stuffy hospital… Away from hordes of the press… And extra security.

Okay… that last one was a lie.

Being back at the palace was a dream come true… but the security had tightened insufferably.

I couldn’t move without someone trailing me. For your own protection. Liam continuously reminded me.

I felt trapped. Stuck. Unable to move around the place that would soon be my home permanently.

After tossing and turning in bed for the third night in a row, I’d had enough. I needed out.

Wrapping myself tightly in my robe, I glanced back at the man sleeping soundly, a leg flung over the covers and half twisted in what looked like an incredibly uncomfortable pose. I shook my head softly at him before placing a light kiss on his forehead, brushing a piece of his blond hair back into place. He stirred softly before settling back into a deep slumber.

I sighed as I saw Bastien’s imposing figure standing outside the door of our apartment.

“Don’t you ever sleep?” I snipped.

“It’s my week of nights, ma’am.” His soft voice echoed through the hall. “Shouldn’t you be asleep?”

“I’d love to be asleep, Bastien. But that seems not to be happening just now.” I sighed deeply as his face showed his concern. “It’s okay… I was just going to head to the library for a bit… See if I can find a book to put me to sleep.”

I smiled slightly, hoping he would allow me to continue on my way.

“Of course, ma’am,” he nodded before speaking into the radio at his hip. “Can I have someone to escort Duchess Riley to the library?”

I blew all the air out of my lungs in exasperation, before turning to start down the hall.

“Bastien, just have them meet me there.” I waved my hand back at him as I started down the hallway, towards my goal.

“Riley!” He called after me. “I’d much prefer that you wait for someone to accompany you.”

“I’m tired, Bastien. I need to walk. On. My. Own.” I huffed, turning to look at him. “It’s like… the palace walls are starting to cave in on me. I can’t keep feeling trapped here.”

I watched the indecision cross his features as he processed my words.

“Okay… but someone will be posted outside of the library. And they will walk you back when you’re ready.” He acquiesced. I wrapped the tall guard in a quick hug, his shocked look bringing a smile to my face.

“Thank you, Bastien,” I whispered, turning back down the hallway before he changed his mind.

The heavy door creaked softly as I pulled it open. I glanced around to make sure no one was around, besides the silent guard posted at the door.

Using my hand I closed the door softly behind me.

“Geez, MacEwan… Could you be any louder? This is a library you know…” The voice inside the large room called out through the darkness. My breath caught in my chest as my heart rate sped to an alarming rate. I pressed my hand flat on my chest, forcing myself to slow my breathing.

“You know scaring someone shortly after they’ve had open heart surgery usually isn’t recommended, Drake,” I whispered, still out of breath.

“And gunshot wound victims should be resting… What’s your point, MacEwan?” Ice cubes clinked in his glass as he moved in the darkness. I shrugged helplessly, knowing I wouldn’t be seen in the dim lighting. “If you don’t have a point, are you at least going to join me in a drink? I have whiskey… or whiskey.”

I laughed, the sound seemed harsh in my ears as I moved through the dimness towards the chair across from him.

“Whiskey, if you don’t mind.” I sunk into the plush leather seat as he added a couple of ice cubes to a tumbler and three fingers worth of an amber liquid. “Your stash or Liam’s?”

I took the offered glass and held it up in a toast to him.

“Liam’s…” He nodded back at me before finishing his glass and pouring another. “Now catch up… you’re at least 3… nope… 4 drinks behind me.”

“Yah… I don’t think that’s going to happen tonight, Walker.” I scoffed taking a gulp of the amber liquid, relishing the burn as it covered my throat. “So… why aren’t you resting?”

“Same reason as you, I bet.” Drake stared into the liquid in his glass as I watched him curiously. “My brain won’t turn off… I keep thinking… What if…? What if I was 10 seconds later…? Or earlier…? And what’s going to happen the next time there’s a ball?”

He paused, glancing up at me.

“What if I can’t protect you next time?” He voice was soft as his eye held mine in an intense gaze.

“Drake…” I whispered, pulling my eyes away from his and onto the glass nestled in my lap. “You can’t think that way… Protecting me… Well… That’s not your job. And you can’t think that it is…”

“But Liam—“

“But Liam, nothing.” I snapped, looking back up at him. “Liam can’t put you in that impossible situation. I won’t let him.”

I sighed deeply, putting my glass on the table in front of us before reaching for his hand. I squeezed his wrist gently as I looked up at him.

“Look, Drake, I know you think you feel something for me.” His eyes widened in shock at my words. Fruitlessly, he tried to pull away from my hold. “But you really don’t. You feel something for the person you think I am. And maybe I was her at one time… But I chose Liam… I will always choose Liam. As stifling as he can be at times.”

I let go of Drake’s forearm before sitting back in the chair and picking my glass back up.

“I can’t have you on my conscience, Drake Walker.” I sighed, staring up at the ceiling of the room. “You’re his best friend. And I know he’d do anything to protect me… But it can’t be at your sacrifice.”

“MacEwan…” He voice was soft and rough with emotion. “I know you chose him… But you’re wrong with the thought that you aren’t the woman I think you are. You’re kind… funny… compassionate… And you love Liam for the person… Not the King. And that’s all I can ask for him.”

I moved my gaze back to him as he placed his now empty glass on the table.

“Just… don’t shut him out…” He sighed as he rose to his feet stiffly. “I know he can be a stubborn ass, but usually he thinks he’s doing the right thing. If it’s suffocating you, you need to tell him.”

I nodded as he squeezed my shoulder on his way past me.

“Sweet dreams, MacEwan.” He smiled softly before leaving me alone in the vast room with nothing but my whiskey and my thoughts.

-Liam’s POV-

Light streamed through the small break in the curtains leading to the balcony and directly into my eyes. Groaning I threw my arm over my eyes to shield out the light crashing into my brain.

“Riley…” I groaned, reaching to the side of the bed that the love of my life should be occupying. My hand blindly searched the spot next to me on the bed. Finding nothing but unused covers my eyes snapped open in shock. “Riley?”

My voice echoed through the empty room and I leaped out of the bed and into the adjoining bathroom. Searching each of the rooms without any results, I finally paused long enough to pull a pair of sweatpants over my legs and yanked the door open.

Bastien’s comforting figure awaited me, stoic as always.

“Did you…? Did she…?” My panic quickly stole my ability to do much of anything as my gaze searched frantically down the hall. “Bastien, she’s gone!”

“She headed down to the library early this morning, your Majesty,” Bastien’s response gave me enough comfort to take my first true breath of the morning.

“Thank heavens…” I whispered. “I will check on her shortly.”

“Sir, Jonah is—“

“I will check on her shortly, Bastien. Thank you.” I snapped before heading back inside the apartment. I quickly threw on a pair of jeans, followed by a dress shirt, with my favourite jade cufflinks, and a blazer, before heading back into the hallway.

“Sir, if I may speak freely…?” The tone of Bastien’s voice caused me to pause before turning him.

“Of course… What is on your mind?” I nodded for him to follow me down the hall, towards the library.

“Sir, the duchess had mentioned something to me earlier this morning…” I made a non-committal sound, hoping he would take that as encouragement to continue. He cleared his throat softly before continuing. “She mentioned feeling trapped, sir.”

“Trapped?” I stopped suddenly, turning to look at the guard in the eyes. “She feels trapped? But, I am simply trying to keep her safe. Between my father… And the assassination… All that has ever happened to her here has been to do her harm. Even…”

I paused thinking about my own actions over the past few days. Her schedule had become busier as she began to take on the role of Duchess, as well as plan our wedding. What had I done to assuage her concerns?

My own schedule had been packed to the point I was falling into our bed well after I wanted to, Riley often curled onto the other side of the bed, sleeping.

Had she actually been sleeping? My mind spun trying to think back on the last few days. Her prone form curled onto her side of the bed… Her back towards me… Her body was usually still, her breathing steady. Almost like… She was hiding from me? In our bed?

I paused in front of the heavy library doors, Jonah positioned steadily next to the door. Slowly, I turned to the young man.

“Has she…?” I paused, glancing back at the door.

“No, your Majesty. She hasn’t left the library as of yet.” He nodded, taking his leave with a look from Bastien. I sighed deeply before carefully pulling the heavy door open, as quietly as I could.

There she was, curled on one of the overstuffed leather armchairs, an empty tumbler teetering in her loose grasp, sound asleep. Her face… finally, a picture of perfect peace as she dreamed without concern.

“Bastien…” My constant shadow acknowledged my call softly. “Have Aiden clear both of our schedules for the morning.”

“But, your Majesty… The ambassador…”

“Can wait, Bastien,” I ordered, stepping deeper into the room. “She’s more important.”

I crossed the room silently, crouching in front of her sleeping form. Gently, I removed the tumbler from her grasp, placing it on the table.

“Riley…” I whispered to her, “Come now, my love… It’s time to go…”

She stirred softly, her hand finding a soft place under her chin. I took a moment to study her face closely. Purple smudges sunk deeply under her eyes, while two deep lines of worry marred the spot where her perfect nose met her forehead. Unable to resist, I bent my head to place a chaste kiss on those lines.

“My love…” My voice edged just over a whisper as I looped an arm under her curled legs. “Come on…”

She shifted again. This time, into my embrace, allowing me to sweep her into my arms. I lifted her out of the chair with ease. Concern flooding my thoughts at how light she had become over the last few weeks.

“Liam…” She whimpered in my arms, clutching my blazer tightly with her hands. Her eyes tightened in her sleep. “Don’t go…”

“It’s ok, Riley,” I whispered, tightening my arms around her. “I’ve got you. I’m not going anywhere.”

She sighed deeply, her face relaxing. Her hands, however, refused to let go of my blazer. The guard posted for the day quickly opened the door to our apartment as we arrived outside of it. I nodded my thanks to him as I carried her into our room.

Gently placing her in the middle of the bed, I took my time to untangle her fingers from the jacket before tossing it to the side of the room. Quickly, I removed my cufflinks and lovingly placed them on my nightstand, followed by my shirt and jeans. Finally, I climbed into the bed occupying the love of my life and pulled the duvet up around both of us. She moved closer to me yet, whimpering lightly, as I wrapped my arms tightly around her and placing a gentle kiss on the top of her head.

“I just wish you would talk to me, Riley…” I whispered into her hair as I let her steady breathing lull me back to sleep.

If you liked Still Beating, please read this post

Hey everyone, first, I want to say that I am blown away by the support on Still Beating. It started out as a project over my summer break and took three months to write, all the while I had no intention of posting it; it was my little project. After an anxious month of do I post? do I post? I decided to go ahead and share it with you. I can now say it was a good choice to do so and I have you guys to thank for that.

Now, what I’m sure you all want to know...I’ve received quite a few messages along the lines of please continue and don't end on a cliff hanger. I’ve said bits and pieces of this through various responses, but here it is all in one place. “Still Beating” will only have 23 chapters i.e. the story as we know it is done. Any continuation will be a new story. In my head, there is definitely more to the story and I have a few ideas of what will go on (Hint: Harry and Sienna won’t be officially together for a while). BUT, and it’s a big but, I am a full time student in university who, at this point, doesn't have the time to write right now. So please, please be patient with me about the sequel. As for the cliff hanger, I liked that ending because the two major twists in the story (about Aiden and Jonah) were answered.

Lastly, I made a “promotion post” for Still Beating that includes a cover, description and all the chapter links. I would appreciate it very much if you could like it or reblog it to spread the word. Your responses have given me the confidence to do so!

cowboy otps need hat related questions.... so who wears the other's hat accidentally? (also ur entire blog is a blessing thank u sm)

i'd say they trade off. some days, jonah will accidentally grab aiden's hat and sometimes he does it because he wants to. aiden finds it funny when it doesn't even match jonah's outfit. jonah knows which hat not to touch: aiden's haraway hat (arthur's hat) because it's very important to him.

aiden will usually grab jonah's main hat. it's brown on top, and the flaps on the side have a cow pattern on them. aiden likes the texture of it. it doesn't really match anything he wears, either, but when jonah's away, he keeps it close. it serves as a reminder of his love <3

So uh... I don't know anything about your gay cowboys but I would never let anyone drown in writer's/art block. So, what are their names? How did they meet? And I would love to read/see a little synopsis of their cowboying adventures! (If you can't answer all that that's fine)

i answered a lot of that here! but i will never get tired of talking about these two :D

they LOVE bounty hunting together. aiden helps jonah keep his anger in check and treat the targets with some kind of respect. jonah isn't one to jump to anger, but if someone says a bad thing about aiden, he's fighting mad (and vice-versa). sometimes the bounty targets do anything to get under their skin in attempt to get away, so that sometimes includes calling them slurs 😔

some bounty targets notice that if they start degrading aiden, jonah gets pissed, like he could send them to hell with just a glare. aiden has a way of reassuring him it's okay. it's just a tactic they use to try to get away. this usually leads to aiden just. kissing jonah for several minutes and reassuring him he's okay, the words didn't hurt that much, and it's all just part of the job. if he didn't like it, he would stop.

aiden adopts pretty much every sickly horse he comes across. if its about to be tossed to the side/abandoned by a stable, he offers to take care of them and nurse them back to health for free. jonah was shocked to see him leading a sick flaxen roan tennessee walker back to camp one day, then an appaloosa the next day. why was aiden taking in these sickly horses when he had $1,000 turkomans and irish cobs?

after some explanation, he agreed to help heal them. he is also a big softy when it comes to animals, so he jumps at the chance to help the horse each time. he likes to sneak them peppermints and sugar cubes.

next, jonah is an absolute heater of a man, so aiden never worries about getting cold if they venture into ambarino or the cold nights in their (future) cabin in tall trees. also, if he asks nicely, he usually gets to ride on jonah's horse with him. sometimes he just does it so he has an excuse to hug his partner. jonah pretends he doesn't know this, but he can see right through aiden.

and finally, they both have a soft spot for kids. aiden tries to act like he doesn't like them, but a second he sees/hears a baby in distress, he's right there to comfort them. jonah finds this absolutely adorable and sometimes teases him about it.

aiden has a sister who has kids, so whenever he and jonah have to babysit, they make sure to be the best uncles ever. you want ice cream for dinner? guess what, you're having ice cream! you want to stay up all night? sure thing, but it may get boring when your uncle aiden falls asleep.

jonah is the one who really lacks a backbone when it comes to kids. those teenage boys you meet in saint denis in story mode of saint denis could get away with robbing him if they acted innocent enough.

there's still a lot i'm trying to decide on, but i hope this is enough for now! as i said, i will never get tired of talking about these two :3c

I have no idea who or what you're talking about but you said gay cowboy and I came running. Whomst are the children?

they're some ocs i made while playing red dead online obsessively! one is aiden, an irish trans+gay cowboy and his bf is jonah, a bi and biracial (black+white) cowboy (loosely inspired by multiple cowboys i've seen in-game). this turned out very long so the rest is under the cut 😌

going along with rdo's (loose) storyline, they were both framed for murder and sent to the sisika penitentiary. however, they chose very different lives when released/escaped. jonah chose to head farther south in the great plains to see what he could find. aiden went north and couldn't stay out of trouble.

they met in valentine, as another guy was bothering aiden in the saloon, and jonah decided he was sick of it. he knew aiden couldn't defend himself for the world. he was thankful he helped this man, too, because he was the prettiest boy he had ever seen. he couldn't even tell himself "you don't like the white boy that much" because he did.

the feeling was 100% mutual, because as soon as aiden got back to camp, he couldn't stop telling cripps about the "pretty and mysterious man he had met in valentine who lowkey saved his life because he was probably about to be sent through a window by a guy much bigger than him."

but they ran into each other again in blackwater and spent a lot of time together in the saloon. they would talk for hours, sometimes about nothing at all. one night, it was late, so jonah offered to let aiden stay at his camp for the night. aiden's poor gay brain short-circuited, and he said "yes" without second thought. of course this lead to mutual gay brain short-circuiting because jonah didn't think he would say yes.

things were awkward at camp, but they got through the night. they decided to form a posse after that called the dead eye double. it would get more member, of course, but it was a placeholder name for now. this meant they set up camp together in the great plains. their dogs and horses got along together very well, which was a huge relief! aiden's dog, jasper, had come to him as a scared stray, so he didn't know how he would react to other dogs.

the posse was going great. a few others joined (dawn, charlie, stevie, and amelia) and money was coming in steadily. however, rival posses still loved messing with the group.

an instance that really defined aiden and jonah's relationship was when aiden nearly died. stevie was hunting, and a lone outlaw attacked him. before he was executed, aiden shot at the outlaw without second thought. this was a mistake, though, as his aim was terrible, and he missed. the outlaw looked up at him with hate, giving stevie time to escape, so he ran to his horse (a silver turkoman named parabola) and kicked him into gallop.

although, it was too late. the outlaw was able to pick up their shotgun and shoot at aiden, it hit him: right in the gut. he fell off of his horse and to the ground, cradling the wound, trying very hard not to cry. it burned, like someone was sticking a branding iron to his skin. he thought he was done for.

that was, until stevie was able to get the outlaw hog-tied and placed on the back of aiden's horse. he went to aiden, cringing when he saw the wound. he was able to get him on his arabian, whistled for parabola to follow, and rushed back to camp.

long story short, jonah was pissed. he couldn't believe someone would just hurt aiden, who was the sweetest man alive, like that. he had the outlaw tied to a horse hitching post, and helped stevie carefully set aiden in his tent. it broke his heart to hear aiden's groans and cries of pain.

the gang managed to perform a hasty surgery, with aiden passing out in the middle of it. it hurt jonah even more to hear aiden's pain-filled cries, but it had to be done, especially when they found out it was buckshot that was planted in aiden's tender belly. they also found out cripps was an expert at using a needle and thread.

recovery was the worst for the camp. aiden stayed unconscious for a majority of it, which scared jonah the most. he just wanted to see his green eyes open again. he stayed at his tent, day and night, losing a lot of sleep. he wanted to make sure aiden was okay. it felt like his heart had been ripped out of his chest and stepped on. he really wanted to kill the outlaw who had injured aiden, to make them suffer like him, but he couldn't let his anger get the better of him. not now.

aiden finally woke up after about two weeks. he was groggy and sore but alive. jonah swore he was going to cry when he saw his eyes open for the first time and heard his voice again. he was so excited, he didn't know what to say. he lead parabola over to him, as the horse had been very worried. he helped him sit up so he could pet and talk to the equine.

this was when jonah realized he was actually in love with aiden. it was no longer just about looks, it was his personality, the way he treated others, how strong he was. as he supported his weight so he could assure parabola he was okay, he had a warm, fuzzy feeling in his chest. it only got harder to ignore when aiden said he didn't want anything bad to happen to the person who had hurt him. why was he so fucking nice it wasn't fair??

the very next week, aiden was up and walking again. every week, he allowed himself to perform more strenuous activity, until he was working with the posse full time again. they decided it was time to go after a huge bounty: the owl hoot family. they set out to rio bravo armed to the teeth.

they successfully brought in the bounty and decided it was time to celebrate. they set up camp just south of fort mercer and threw a small party. cripps had his harmonica out, amelia, charlie and dawn provided their musical talent, and they all had fun. jonah finally got the courage to ask aiden for a dance. aiden was flustered, but he accepted. it was then that they decided they were both very much in love. finally.

so the obvious courting began. jonah would leave bouquets of prairie poppies or texas bluebonnets at aiden's tent and went hunting for him sometimes, and aiden would write poems or draw stuff for jonah. jonah would pin this up in his tent, very proud of his new bf. after weeks of this, the camp was practically begging them to just start dating already. so they did! they were happy n very much in love :)

this is an excuse to talk about their horses. i will tell more headcanons later in a second post since this one got long!

jonah's horses are:

- black chestnut thoroughbred gelding named rocky

- spotted tricolor norfolk roadster gelding named bones

- gold turkoman mare named champagne

he bought his thoroughbred and turkoman in saint denis. they weren't cheap at all, but he didn't mind at the time (and he definitely doesn't mind now that he knows aiden loves his horses so much). they are both very good. rocky can run races if prompted to, and champagne is an excellent horse to take hunting (whether it be for animals or bounties).

now, he found bones at valentine stable at half-price. no one wanted to buy the angry stallion. bones started out angry at the world, letting out shrill cries whenever anyone - or anything - came close. he often kicked his stall door and injured other horses and people who tried to work with him. he was deemed a lost cause. they thought tying him to another, older horse would help, but it stressed him out even more. he was an anxious thing.

but jonah took a chance. he knew it was a risk, as bones was the first horse he bought, but something told him to do it. he gave up his trusty kentucky saddler for this unpredictable hell-horse. he couldn't quite lead him out of the stables, so he could only look at him for awhile.

bones had obviously been abused. no horse was this anxious and wary of people for nothing. jonah worked with him, day and night, trying to gain his trust. the first sign was allowing jonah to come up to his stall, then eating out of his hand, then letting him rub his neck. it took about a year and a half for bones to trust jonah enough to let him put his tack on.

when they had bonded enough for jonah to ride bones, jonah took it very slow. bones was living at his camp by now, but they usually did trail riding or short errands that didn't involve crowds, nothing extreme. jonah borrowed a friend's horse (mealy chestnut belgian draft) whenever he had work to do.

now aiden's horses... he has a lot. i have little self control when it comes to buying horses in rdo, so i give him every horse i like. they are:

- dark bay turkoman mare named honey

- silver turkoman stallion named parabola / "chibs"

- gold turkoman gelding named abel

- splashed piebald irish cob mare named ghost

- buckskin brindle missouri fox trotter stallion named jigsaw

- dapple grey missouri fox trotter mare names skyline pigeon / "pidge"

- buckskin mustang stallion named elton

- red dun overo mustang mare named tiny dancer

- spotted tricolor norfolk roadster stallion named s'mores

he bought a majority of them on sale. they were horses that the stable wanted gone, so they could get new ones in stock. abel was the only horse he paid full price for, and he's an incredible horse.

since aiden does a lot of bounty hunting with jonah, so he has specific horses he takes. he usually takes abel, chibs, ghost, or honey since they're strong, have lots of stamina, and very brave. ghost is the stockiest of them all, so she can pull a lot of weight. she's even stomped cougars.

honey is a mellow horse. she wouldn't hurt a fly. however, she's the best bounty hunting buddy aiden has ever had, next to jonah. she likes to follow and let jonah's horse lead the chase. but she will take charge the second she's told to.

onto s'mores, jigsaw, and pidge. they are the horses he uses for racing, leisure riding, etc. jigsaw can be an ass sometimes, so aiden sticks to leisure western riding with him. he hates small spaces and trolleys. he loves to act out, which includes acting skittish for no clear reason. he's a sucker for snoot pats, kisses, and treats, though.

most of that can be seen here, but i will explain more on their dreams, and how they changed!

we have jonah miller. a biracial (black+white) cowboy who started out on the great plains near blackwater, but he's moved around since then. when he got out of prison, all he wanted to do was avenge those who framed him for murder. he's usually a quiet guy, but he can get hell-bent on revenge, especially if someone touches his horse.

then we have aiden o'malley. he's the son of irish immigrants, and he loves horses. he's trans (ftm) and gay. (before anyone comes at my throat saying he can't be trans, refer to this article.) he's very shy and quiet and prefers the company of horses over people.

jonah's thoughts of revenge were out on hold when he met aiden. he thought he was absolutely adorable. jonah had had partners in the past, but none of them caught his eye the way aiden did. they started talking, went their separate ways, but met up once again. jonah said "fuck it" and began courting aiden not long before they formed their posse.

fast forward to when they started dating. they spent a lot of time together, because they never knew if today would be their last. however, their relationship moved slow. they didn't even have a first kiss until a few months after dating while the first "i love you" came within the first two weeks. i can't say much about their first time, since i'm a minor, but let's just say valentine hotel after a year and a half of dating. sex was never a huge part of their relationship, anyway.

they tried to hide their relationship at first, honestly, because they didn't know how their posse members would react. but it was easy to guess something was going on between the two when you saw the way they looked at each other.

at one point, their only hope was to get married and settle down. it seemed impossible. they were outlaws who were stealing and killing to keep their trader business going. they put a "no killing" rule in place at one point.

once this rule was in place, they started talking about where they would move/live, if they wanted kids after marriage, if they wanted cripps to move in with them, what they would do with their horses and posse members, what would happen if lawmen found them, etc.

it took a few years, but once they had the money, they moved to a cabin in tall trees. they got married not long after. jonah used bones to help propose to aiden, who said yes without hesitation. they couldn't get married legally, but they knew they were married. it was a small ceremony, attended only by close friends and family. jonah's family wasn't the most accepting, though, so he only had his close friends. it broke aiden's heart to see this, but jonah assured him it was fine. aiden knew it wasn't.

(tw mention of trans pregnancy) their next goal was to start a family. i will elaborate on that later, since someone asked, but they did want kids. they knew they already had their dogs and horses, but both of them loved kids. aiden just knew jonah would be an adorable dad and vice-versa. jonah never pressured aiden into having kids since he knew he would probably experience a lot of dysphoria if he ever got pregnant. aiden was fine with it, though. he really wanted kids, and he trusted jonah to not run away if things got too tough. they had promised to stay together forever, through sickness and health. so, after a few tries, they were expecting their first child. they could barely contain their excitement.

surprisingly, right before the baby was born, jonah's brother reached out to them. he and two of jonah's sisters wanted to reform their broken relationship. they thought if they could tell their parents about the life jonah had now, they would be able to be a close family again. jonah accepted his brother's request to visit without hesitation. his family didn't know he and aiden were expecting, but it would be a pleasant surprise for them. they thought he was just married and had a house/farm of his own.

i'll talk more on jonah's siblings in my next answer! but after their first child is born, jonah's only goal is to be a good husband and a good father. he already knew aiden was a good father, and he was the best husband he could have asked for.

their goals didn't change much throughout their lives. they had their family, a cabin, and so many great friends and family members. they just hoped the world would become more accepting of gay relationships. having to keep everything a secret sucked. they didn't go out in public together much in fear someone would just know. aiden didn't go out in public much before getting in a relationship, as he feared someone would find out he was trans and try to change him. jonah didn't know what it was like to be trans, but he always tried to help aiden in any way he could.

sperate random dreams i have for the both of them are:

- aiden wants to be a horse trainer. being able to train a prize racehorse would be so fun to him. it wouldn't seem like work at all.

- jonah would love to be a math teacher at a university somewhere. he was always good with math despite being homeschooled exclusively. he knows it's a foolish dream, though, since it's obvious he's black. black teachers weren't very common, and he had never heard of a successful one. it left him discouraged.

- but jonah did like the idea of becoming a musician, too. he was pretty good at singing and playing guitar. aiden would always beg him to sing, and whenever their baby was being restless, jonah's singing would calm them down. he was talented.

- jonah also hoped to find a way for aiden to get on testosterone one day. he knew it had to be a thing. if people were trans, shouldn't there be medical ways to ease their discomfort, if they want to seek it out? he hated seeing aiden on days when his dysphoria was really bad. aiden had injured himself while binding before, but he never told jonah about it. he didn't want him to worry.

- finally, aiden dreamed of traveling. he loved exploring the areas around the great plains and scarlett meadows, but what was it like outside of the country they were most familiar with? it seemed impossible to fulfill this dream once he settled down with his family, but it was on his mind often. he wanted to see what this mystical england was like.
