Seven-Spotted Ladybug - Coccinella septempunctata

Let’s give these little spotted gems some love and appreciation. I’ve been a little busy with their smaller and more unknown relatives, but now it’s their turn for the spotlight. There’s been quite a few Seven-Spotted Ladybugs throughout the years, so I’ve found them on many a plant. Large-sized as far as Ladybugs go, they’re easy to spot walking on plants or flying through the air. Don’t swoop down on them if you plan to pick them up; you can coax them onto your hand if you place your fingers nearby or if they land on your clothing. Similar to the Asian Ladybug (or Ladybugs in general for the matter), if frightened or agitated they will emit their smelly and noxious-tasting hemolymph defense to try and escape. Also like Asian Ladybugs, looks like that Seven-Spotted Ladybugs appear red or orange! Keep your palm open and don’t let them feel trapped and the worst they’ll do is draw their legs under their shell to protect them. In my experience they’ll roam on your hand for sometime before eventually flying away or suddenly dropping into the grass below. It’s just what they do to escape the occasional spell of danger since they’re used to feasting on soft-bodied insects with little difficulty...unless Ants are on patrol of course.

I’ve mentioned in posts with other insects that Ants like to tend to honeydew producing insects, offering protection in exchange for that delicious liquid. Now, if honeydew is so tantalizing, couldn’t Ladybug larvae or adults just eat the honeydew? To answer, kind of. The larvae need protein and carbohydrates to grow and molt to their adult forms. so soft-bodied insects are the priority (unless it’s Ladybug that only eats plants such as those of the Epilachna genus). Plus, they get honeydew when they eat the insects anyway. It’s a win-win! Since the adult Beetles can unfold their wings and fly around, they can be more open to other food sources such as honeydew, fruits, pollen and even fungi, depending on the specie. Soft-bodied insects are still best, but there are nutrients from the aforementioned sources that are also beneficial to a Ladybug’s overall health. Looking into it further, nutritional content of soft-bodied insects may vary due to which plant(s) they feed on. These extra food sources have also shown to be especially valued when prey items become more scarce. If only I’d thought to pay closer attention to the individual photographed in September. These diligent creatures need to do everything they can to stay healthy if it means surviving an overwinter or migrating.

DigitalAngel's July2020 Eyes 3 as “contact lenses” and eyes default replacements

I was asked to share it so here you go. These are all Digi's beautiful hand drawn eyes edited on DreadPirate's sclera and made into eyemasks - blush category (it's the same thing I did here: link). 5 eyes seen on the preview are also made into eyes default replacements. All needed info and swatch is in the download, let me know if you have any more questions. Should be compatibile with most avialable sclera masks (e.g. these ones).

Red-Belted Bumblebee - Bombus rufocinctus

It was somewhat difficult to choose a “red-colored” insect for showcase given that many of the more prominent insects featuring red bodies have already had a turn in the Valentine’s Day spotlight. As well, there are some insects that would be perfect fit for Valentine’s Day, but I would be repeating pictures that have already been uploaded or have no pictures of my own for said specimen (I can only hope to see the Lovebug (Plecia nearctica - a March Fly) swarms for myself one day). For today, let’s revisit a familiar fuzzy face with an eye-catching sash of red-striping around the abdomen. Like many of our Bumblebee friends, they are a welcome sight during the summer and these pollinating insects (the workers) go from flower to flower daily to gather food for the colony and the queen. Keep an eye out for the red bands, but also keep in mind that there is tremendous variability with the pattern on the abdominal segments between individuals.

Getting back to feeding, since their tongues are short, they’ll need to choose flowers that are shallow and easily accessible. Wide flowers would likely be fine as well, but there’s just so much to choose with smaller flowers such as those from oregano here or another small flower clusters (goldenrod comes to mind). On the other hand, compared to other Bumblebees, the Red-Belted Bumblebees are small so perhaps they could simply crawl into deep flowers to reach the prize inside. Such a strategy may be viable if the flower has enough wiggle room to allow the Bee to leave by walking backwards. There are flowers that employ such a strategy to ensure successful pollination, but I can’t speak on whether or not the Red-Belted Bumblebee participates with those flowers. Since a worker Bee only has a limited carrying capacity within its innards and crop, she has to be very selective with which flowers and how many she visits for maximum yield given her effort. Though tiring, a worker Bee’s job is most important and she (alongside her sisters) ensure a healthy colony when pollen and sweet nectar are brought home.

Plasma Bank In India

INDIA’S FIRST PLASMA BANK: IN SCOPE FOR A TREATMENT AGAINST COVID-19

Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated India’s first plasma bank on 2nd July2020. This plasma bank is at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS). The Plasma will be extracted considering its scope in treating COVID-19 after specific trials. The bank will coordinate with patients who have recovered from COVID-19, and are eligible to donate plasma.

PLASMA BANK AND ITS NECESSITY:

Just like a blood bank, plasma bank has been developed specifically for those who are suffering from Covid-19 and have been advised the therapy by doctors. Plasma was not easily available also people were scared of stepping into a COVID hospital in search of Plasma and hence considering the rising demand among the patients, government has set up a Centre for the donors.

Any patient suffering from COVID generates antibodies in their blood to fight against the virus. These Antibodies are available easily in COVID patient’s plasma component of the blood. In plasma therapy, the antibody rich plasma from a recovered patient’s blood is extracted and administered to a patient.

With the ready antibodies after isolation, the trials will be conducted to find out if the antibodies can help patients recover.

KNOW HOW PLASMA DONATION IS DIFFERENT FROM BLOOD DONATION:

In plasma donation, only plasma is extracted and the other components of blood are returned to the body.

Blood contains several components, including red blood cells, platelets, white blood cells, and plasma. During a whole blood donation, donors typically donate almost half a liter of blood. A specific automated machine-Apheresis, is connected using a disposable one time use kit. The machine will selectively retain the plasma and return all red blood cells and other components of blood back to the donor’s body.

Important thing to note is, scientifically the plasma proteins lost during donation is recovered again in 24- 72 hours.

CRITERIA FOR DONATING PLASMA :

As suggested and recommended by doctors, a time of three weeks between recovery and donation of blood is preferable for getting a good and viable count of antibodies.

People between the ages of 18 and 60, and weighing not less than 50 kg are eligible. Women who have recently delivered baby are not eligible.

People with having medical conditions with diabetes, hypertension, and cancer are also not qualified. The doctors are mandated to take a detailed medical history and conduct a physical examination before considering the person a suitable for blood plasma donation.

TEST THAT ARE CARRIED OUT BEFORE DONATING PLASMA:

Laboratory tests are carried out to assess various conditions – serum protein and CBC, TTI testing for hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus, HIV, Malaria, and Syphilis. Also tested for blood grouping and antibody screening. Serum COVID-19 specific IgG antibody concentration which is higher than 80 is preferred.

HOW CAN A DONOR CONTACT THE BANK?

As per the guidelines shared by Government, a patient who is eligible and willing to donate plasma may call 1031 or WhatsApp details at 8800007722.

Team of doctors will contact the patient to confirm eligibility. A travel reimbursement is suggestive to the donor.
