i can ABSOLUTELY talk a little about that!!!

there's this podcast called. The Penumbra Podcast. i ate it up during some very formative years and it REALLY opened my eyes to how !!

personal and intricate gender can be! the main character is named Juno Steel (almost stole his entire ass name when i was picking a new one for myself but i REFRAINED.)

anyway he's got this!! really cool relationship w gender that's handled dextrously and without making it a big deal or !! god it's so cool.

anyway juno uses he/him pronouns BUT uses feminine language and identifiers so like. he calls himself a lady. he wears dresses. he has a fav lip stain. and he's nb and !! anyway that's how i see dean living his best gender life 💖💖 i think he would say he's a wonderful wife and cas you should be spoiling your WONDERFUL WIFE. and then cas helps him put on his new earrings and kisses his stupid cheek and they r in love.

i think ten years ago we were all very well acquainted w the concept of dean overcompensating his masculinity but that sort of ? materialized in the simplistic and fucked up take of 'deans a bottom and i'll only read bottom dean fic' like. hm. we were in highschool and there was not a HUGE understanding of how gay sex worked in the reality of things

but. yeah i think that's how i and the majority of fandom boiled it all down. and now there's SO much more exploration of those themes and character takes and !! i'm IN LOVE with it!!!!!

and yeah there's something inherent in the wifification of cas and him always being the one pregnancied that i. don't think i have enough brainpower for fully deconstructing. like the show did it first for SURE but. idk i always mourn his bitch traits when people soften him too much in fic and mpreg can be VERY guilty of that one. cas is very much the more. hmmmm. gender afflicted on a surface reading? and that makes it easier to play within fandom i think? because we see such a dramatic character arc for his personality and angels. are. like kind of nb as much as spn could handle saying that. so it's easier for fandom to look at cas and see a childbearing alien without gender ??? (but wild when you read him pretty exclusively as a trans man like. woof.)

BUT YEAH LIKE!!!! genders a societal construction. ascribing gender to traits can be so fucked up for trans people and. like cis people to.

there's so much. nuance and delicacy in all of this and !! it's SUCH an individual journey for every trans person and their relationship to their body and i love that we can ease it a little w spn as our little whiteboard to scrub and scrawl and scribble on 💕

i'm def pro nb dean!!!! i'm a BIG fan!!!! any fic i write is. nb dean in some capacity?

in postpartum specifically he hasn't really dug into his own sexuality or gender yet. he's still very uh... repressed. there IS some fun gender discussion (esp on cas' end-- whose written as a trans man. angel means assigned nb at birth) that gets dean thinking and self reflecting in. as much capacity as the man can manage before shutting down like a bear trap.

it may end up getting explored but all the plot isn't completely ironed out so i can't make promises! and i also have to talk with my co-author @nifedick about it!!

oh anon my best friend anon. perhaps in a couple of months. rn i'm trying to finish my degree and also my love potion sequel as well as postpartum. and too be honest ALL my fic is juno jender dean fic that's just. who he is to me. there's a little bit in love potion six that hints at him being HM. NOT EXACTLY STRICTLY MALE ALIGNED but only if he's able to present it as a joke. and deans about to go to a literal gender studies class in postpartum so that's gunna. bang a few gongs. and also cas has a. massive gender moment that i've been working on for a month trying to get just right and like!!!! tasty

but i WOULD really like to take the time to explore his gender identity in a fic in a very focused way!! i think it's FASCINATING what lines he will let himself cross and what he lets himself want and what he KNOWS he wants and what he's SUPPOSED to want. especially in reference to gender!!
