Spring Tide
Camping adventures in the Algarve continue!
There’s an enormous cow skull attached to one of the trees. That’s the second thing I notice about my campsite for the night. The first is the remains of the sort of quasi-Bedouin hospitality that freewheeling Westerners like: water-damaged round cushions, a rolled-up rug, a rusted metal lantern with a star pattern. After staying in legit campsites, the kind with lanyards, this weekend I’ve…

On the way back to shore, I sit on the deck and let the low golden light slant onto my face. This is northern sunbathing—soaking the only part of your body you dare expose to the elements in the most diffuse warmth imaginable and feeling renewed #KatherineMay #alegra #tuxedocat #sunbathing #meow #light #sun #madrid #contrast #emergence https://www.instagram.com/p/CnktXQAsKNw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

TCL's #6Degrees of Separation for July 2, 2022.
TCL's #6Degrees of Separation for July 2, 2022. Find out how I went from #Wintering by #KatherineMay to #TheBookWomensDaughter by @kybookwoman on my #bookblog now! Thanks again to @kateinkew for this fun monthly meme and #linkparty!
From “Wintering” by Katherine May to “The Book Woman’s Daughter” by Kim Michele Richardson. This is a monthly link-up hosted by Kate at Books Are My Favourite and Best. Each month a book is chosen as a starting point and linked to six other books to form a chain. A book doesn’t need to be connected to all the other books on the list, only to the one next to it in the chain. The rules are: Link…

Quote
Life has been busy, and in the general rush of things, these vital fragments of my identity have been squeezed out. I have missed them, but in a shrugging kind of way. What can you do when you're already doing everything?  The problem with 'everything' is that it ends up looking an awful lot like nothing: just one long haze of frantic activity, with all the meaning sheared away. Time has passed so quickly while I have been raising a child and writing books, and working a full time job that often sprawls into my weekends that I can't quite account for it. The preceding years are not a blank exactly, but they're certainly a blur, and one that's strangely devoid of meaning, except for a clawing sense of survival.
“Wintering,” by Katherine May (pgs. 19-20)

If happiness is a skill, then sadness is , too.Perhaps through all those years at school, or perhaps through other terrors, we are taught to ignore sadness, to stuff it down into our satchels and pretend it isn’t there. As adults, we often have to learn to hear the clarity of its call. That is wintering. It is the active acceptance of sadness. It is the practice of allowing ourselves to feel it as a need. It is the courage to stare down the worst parts of our experience and to commit to healing them the best we can. Wintering is a moment of intuition, our true needs felt keenly as a knife. Wintering in the Sun
Next to me in the beach parking lot, a young couple lounge just inside the door of their off-white camper van consuming the fresh fruit that must be their breakfast from the vantage point of what must be their bed. She remains ensconced in her blanket despite the quickly dissipating February morning chill, while her partner, lean with emphatically shoe-free feet, hops up periodically to gently…
