John Berger: The Art of Looking:

Art, politics and motorcycles - on the occasion of his 90th birthday John Berger or the Art of Looking is an intimate portrait of the writer and art critic whose ground-breaking work on seeing has shaped our understanding of the concept for over five decades. The film explores how paintings become narratives and stories turn into images, and rarely does anybody demonstrate this as poignantly as Berger.

Berger lived and worked for decades in a small mountain village in the French Alps, where the nearness to nature, the world of the peasants and his motorcycle, which for him deals so much with presence, inspired his drawing and writing.

The film introduces Berger's art of looking with theatre wizard Simon McBurney, film-director Michael Dibb, visual artist John Christie, cartoonist Selçuk Demiral, photographer Jean Mohr as well as two of his children, film-critic Katya Berger and the painter Yves Berger.

The prelude and starting point is Berger's mind-boggling experience of restored vision following a successful cataract removal surgery. There, in the cusp of his clouding eyesight, Berger re-discovers the irredeemable wonder of seeing.

Realised as a portrait in works and collaborations, this creative documentary takes a different approach to biography, with John Berger leading in his favourite role of the storyteller.

While not available on BBC (at least in the US), it is posted here on YouTube, for now.

El cementerio tenía amplios parterres de hierba y unos árboles muy altos. Un tordo brincaba meticuloso sobre la hierba recién segada. Preguntamos al jardinero, que era bosnio, dónde estaba la tumba.

Por fin la encontramos en una esquina alejada. Una sencilla lápida y un rectángulo de gravilla sobre el que había un arbusto plantado en un cesto; era un arbusto frondoso, de hoja pequeña de un verde muy oscuro y con bayas. Debería haber sabido el nombre de la planta, pues Borges amaba la exactitud; cuando escribía quería llegar hasta donde había elegido llegar. Se pasó toda la vida enzarzado en políticas escandalosas o equivocadas, pero nunca se dejó enzarzar en la página.

Debo justificar lo que me hiere.

No importa mi ventura o mi desventura.

Soy el poeta.

La planta, según nos dijo el jardinero bosnio, era un tipo de boj, el Buxus sempervivens. Tendría que haberlo reconocido. En los pueblos de la Alta Saboya se humedece en agua bendita una ramita de esta planta para salpicar con ella por última vez el cadáver del ser querido amortajado en la cama. Se convirtió en una planta sagrada debido a la escasez de otra. El Domingo de Ramos nunca había suficientes hojas de sauce en la región, y los saboyanos empezaron a sustituirlas por ramas de este tipo de boj.

Había muerto, decía la lápida, el 14 de junio de 1986.

Nos quedamos los dos en silencio. Katya llevaba una mochila colgada al hombro y yo tenía el casco con los guantes dentro entre las manos. Nos agachamos delante de la lápida.

Tenía tallado un bajorrelieve que representaba a unos hombres en lo que parecía una especie de embarcación medieval. ¿O estaban en tierra y era su disciplina militar lo que los hacía estar tan pegados, tan incondicionalmente juntos? Parecían figuras antiguas. Al otro lado de la lápida había más guerreros, éstos con unos remos o unas lanzas en la mano, confiados, preparados para cruzar el terreno o el agua que hubiera que cruzar.

Cuando Borges vino a morir a Ginebra, le acompañaba María Kodama. Había sido alumna suya en los años sesenta en sus cursos de anglosajón y literatura escandinava. Borges la doblaba en edad. Cuando se casaron, ocho semanas antes de que él falleciera, se mudaron del hotel en el que estaban, en una de las calles-archivo llamada Rue de la Tour-Maîtresse, a un piso que ella había buscado.

De usted, escribió él en una dedicatoria, es este libro, María Kodama. ¿Será preciso que le diga que esta inscripción comprende los crepúsculos, los ciervos de Nara, la noche que está sola y las populosas mañanas, las islas compartidas, los mares, los desiertos y los jardines, lo que pierde el olvido y lo que la memoria transforma, la alta voz del muecín, la muerte de Hawkwood, los libros y las láminas?

Sólo podemos dar lo que ya hemos dado. Sólo podemos dar lo que ya es del otro.
