Queen Aoife was dying. For a hundred years and near half that again longer than any other had before, or ever would after — she had ruled Keltia, with an iron hand and a stiff back and a mind that could work at computer speed; had given the realm four sons, four princes to follow her; had seen the father of those sons dead long since, in a battle far from his home; had gone on alone, to make Keltia stronger than the kingdom had ever been in all the centuries of its existence; had lived to see the name of Keltia respected and feared and honored far beyond the Pale of its protection, a power among the stars. Now she was dying at last, and knew that she was dying, and was more than content that it should be so.

FINISHED THE COPPER CROWN!
Overall, I liked it! I love Celtic myths and history, and this book certainly delivers on its promise of "celts in space." I'm not well versed enough to say whether the author did very good research, or if she's parroting a lot of hippie nonsense, or if she just made a bunch of stuff up wholecloth (I imagine it's a mix), but the worldbuilding for Keltia at least is solid and very detailed.
That said, I do wish there was a little more worldbuilding for the rest of the universe. We know very little about the Imperium, Fomori, or even Earth, except that the first two of those have had major beef with Keltia for thousands of years, which was exacerbated by the Fomori orphaning and widowing Aeron, and then Aeron...blowing up a whole random planet (also, it's wild to me how casual people are about her blowing up the planet lmao).
It very much feels like the author worldbuilt Kelita intensely, then created the Keltic characters, and finally added the rest of the universe so she could have a sci-fi plot, with the Earth ambassadors acting as audience surrogates. It's not terrible, but things are a little uneven.
My last gripe is that Haruko should not have died. There was no reason for it! Aeron was going to fight Bres to the death anyway, she didn't need Haruko's death as extra motivation, so it just seems kinda....wasted. And also ruins the pacing of the scene a bit. He didn't even really get a full character arc.
Anyway, I did enjoy this book, it's an extremely fun blend of a Celtic fantasy world mixed with sci-fi. Will definitely pick up the sequel!

Look me in the eye and tell me we couldn't all use a good space opera book series with all its cheesiness and lines like "what is the greatest wisdom of man?" "To be able to do evil, and not to do it"
Look me the goddamn eye

A rather gnarly haired woman huffs, tail limp in exhaustion and anger as she dumps the body over the cliff's edge. She sighs, pulling out a yellowed piece of paper and a quill, ears twitching gently as she checks for danger as she crosses off the name.
"One Sir Bauman down, I can get that bounty back down the mountain... Now, let's see if I can't find this Mistress someone paid me in advance for. You got this Keltia... Just, don't look down."
Keltia starts to shuffle across the rocks slowly to start making her way down to the mainlands once more.

Gwydion flinched as if she had slapped his face; then his color flooded back, and warmth, and with both came a look of unutterable joy. "Aeronwy -- Aeron is back in Keltia. Just now I heard her call." "Aeron! But-" "She is home. She is home, and not far away, and I know where we must go to find her." "Oh, Gwydion, I want to see her almost as much as you do, but are you sure?" He laughed, a joyous, exultant sound she had never heard from him before. "Never was I surer of anything in all my lives -- could she call, and I not hear her? Sooner would the sun be black, or water dry. She is waiting for us, Sorcha; let us go and find her."

Concept piece-crossover of...
Tumblr media
...StarWars (original Trilogy-the ONLY trilogy-with 1st 3 Zahn/Hand of T’rawn books), the Keltiad/Celtica, and Serenity/Firefly...
- based off the Welsh tale of Creiddylad, Gwythur ap Greidiol, and Gwyn ap Nudd in symbolism...in part...
-Something of a filk/ spoof Space RockOpera with 70s/80s/90/and cheesy 2000s music setting the theme...my ambition is to draft a scene where the Tantooine Cantina crew basically plays out the lyrics to ‘Piano Man’, and ends up after a night of poetry slams and politics, closing it down to a Cantina patron full on Alien Menagerie rockin’ it out to ‘I LOVE ROCKIN’ ROLL (put another dime in the JuteBox, baby...)’, as OFC (combo of Daenerys and Marvel’s Valkyrie/Scarlet Witch...w/psionic healing powers) is trying to escape from Luke, and Luke is trying to evade a gang of bounty-hunters. TimeLine roughly set about 4 years after RotJ, with the discovery of a Wormhole by Dathomir, which brings the quadrants of Keltia (after the ValeWall is destroyed and the Fomori-Coroniad War) and the Terran Federacy/Firefly-Serenity (just afternoon the events of Miranda) into contact with that of the Empire and Republic Alliance...
