𝚃𝚆: 𝚃𝙾𝚁𝚃𝚄𝚁𝙴 , 𝙱𝙻𝙾𝙾𝙳 , 𝙺𝙸𝙳𝙽𝙰𝙿𝙿𝙸𝙽𝙶
He came to wonder how this all started.
His father. His father was a Hydra scientist. He soon realized how awful Hydra truly was and left. They chased his family. They moved all around the small country of Georgia.
That being said, he could never hate his father, no. His father gave him the greatest gift he could’ve wanted. A gift of identity. While on the run, his father decided to start hormone therapy and some new form of stable genetic testing, to turn him from a daughter to a son. One more piece to keep the family hidden. It’s probably why they were able to hide for so long.
He had picked up dance, becoming proficient in it. He was also an avid reader. He did well in school as he grew up. Everything was stable, it was almost as if he had gotten away from his life of running, until he didn’t.
It was 1948. Andrei still lived with his parents. He was at the doctor, getting some blood work done. It was true he passed as a man, it was true he spoke like one, looked like one, fit in as one, but blood was telling. No one could’ve known that doctor was a Hydra spy. No one could’ve anticipated him finding out.
Andrei was home now. He was eating dinner when this all ensued. His mother had cooked khinkali and kharcho for the family. The lights were dim, yet comforting in the house. The radio played piano music in the background. The aroma was a homely one.
Much words weren’t shared, but it wasn’t in a hostile, distasteful way.
About halfway through the meal, a knock came at the door. Andrei decided he should be the one to check through the peephole. When he did, a group of familiar men were on the doorstep. Only then was the aura no longer comforting, but chilling.
He ran back to the dining room looking anxious. There was a knock again, fiercer.
“You need to hide.” Andrei said, ushering his mother and father out of the dining room. He walked to the hatch to the attic and opened it for them, hastily helping them up. “Don’t come out, not until I say so.” He whispered, closing the hatch. His mother protested, screaming for her beloved son, but her husband covered her mouth. Surely Andrei had some reason to be doing this. A plan, maybe? Possibly he was making this up on the fly.
A harsher knock at the door. Andrei finally opened it, standing in the doorway. His body blocked the opening into the house.
“Can I help you?” He asked, his head tilting to the side slightly.
“Yes, actually, do a Giorgi Ciobanu, a Kristin Ciobanu, and an Elene Ciobanu live here?” The man on the doorstep asked.
“I’m afraid you have the wrong house.” Andrei responded, eyes narrowing slightly. The man kept a calm demeanor.
“That is unfortunate.” He said, an unnerving tone to his voice. He turned to leave, but suddenly swung back around, administering a shock right to Andrei’s temple, causing him to fall to the ground, stunned. Stunned to the point he couldn’t move.
His heart beat in his chest. It was panicked, racing faster as the man drew near.
“Where are your parents, Elene?” The man asked, his question sounding more like a statement. Andrei refused to respond. Even if he was taken, his hard working father would be spared. Even if he was killed, his loving mother would be saved.
The man seemed to take his silence as a condemnation.
“Your silence won’t save them.” He said. Before Andrei could even think of a response, a rag was over his mouth and he was knocked out cold.
When he woke up, he was in a hospital of some kind. A monitor was attached to him, watching his heart rate intently. The room he was in was long, with a row of medical beds aligning either wall. The lights were bright in this room, and it smelt of sterilization agents. There were underlying scents of metal and blood.
Andrei was back in a panic. Where was he? How long was he out?
He sat up, ripping the cords from the monitor off his chest. The room looked empty, no doctors to speak of. No one guarding the doors.
Andrei ran, bare feet touching the cold cement that made the floor. He ran out the medical room and out into the hallway, where guards immediately caught sight of him.
“02!” They shouted. Had his whole life been reduced to a number now? There wasn’t much time to think. Fight or flight. He couldn’t fight these men. He was strong, but not trained. So he ran as fast as he could. He turned corridors, evaded and squeezed through people, who then joined the chase.
The concrete began to cut his feet after a while, causing him to slow down. He couldn’t hide now, not when his own blood gave him away. What a form of self sabotage.
He continued to run, until he was grabbed and pulled harshly to the ground. His head slammed against the concrete, chin slamming down first. There was a sick crack heard. His mouth filled with blood. His teeth had chipped. His bottom jaw felt like it had been crushed under a press. He let out a cry, warped and garbled by his own blood.
Small shards of bone poked at his skin from the inside. Some even pierced it. Broken off pieces of tooth sliced The inside of his mouth as he was held down. He writhed under the guards, screaming hoarsely, as if anyone could one to his rescue. He was helpless. He started to cry. He wept and screamed like a child, only garbled by the blood spilling out his mouth. This only served to pain him more; as his jaw could barely move. The last thing added to this pain was a sharp jab to the arm. A shot stuck out of his shoulder. Tranquilizer. A strong one. It started to work immediately. Pain mixed with exhaustion. He went down quick.
He woke up again in the medical room. His jaw still still ached, but the piercing pain was gone. His body was sore and fatigued. He reached up to feel his jaw, previously shattered. His fingers touched cold metal. He ran his fingers along metal, tracing the prosthetic. Feeling the fake gums and teeth. He was panicked once more, but too sore and pained to do anything. His fingers reached the intersection of metal and skin on his face. He dug his nails into the sutures, pulling at it.
A doctor ran over and stopped him, grabbing his wrist.
“You’ve injured your body enough.” The doctor reprimanded him, harshly. “We need you in good health.” He tsked. Andrei looked at him with teary eyes.
“Why?” He managed to say, his jaw barely working, and aching as he spoke.
“Testing.” The doctor responded. Andrei couldn’t be bothered to press further.
One thing he noticed in his mouth, were that his teeth were all fixed. No chips or cracks.
He propped himself up and got out the medical bed, taking notice of the doctor eyeing him like a hawk. He headed towards the door, stumbling with every step.
“Let me show you to your room.” The doctor said, taking Andrei’s arm and guiding him out the medical station.
He led him to a hallway with rows of cells, similar to a prison, but the doors were steel with one window. The doctor scanned his badge and keyed in a code to one of the doors and it unlocked with multiple clicks. He pulled the door open to reveal the room.
It was just like a prison room, with the exception of a bathroom and a shower. There was a desk in the room, a bed attached to the wall, no windows.
“Here is your room, 02.” The doctor spoke and pushed him inside. Andrei stood in the room. He turned around to ask a question, but the door had already closed and locked. He noticed a small hatch in the door, probably for food.
He didn’t know what time it was, what day it was, or even where he was. His mind drifted to thoughts of his parents. Where were they? Were they safe? Are they looking for him? He hoped not. They would be safer if they didn’t.
He sat on the mattress. It was cold. Stiff. Uncomfortable. He pulled the sheets back and laid there. He let his mind drift off, trying to find some comfort in his situation.
The next day, he woke up to a loud banging on the metal door. He jolted up, body still aching. The door unlocked. Two guards grabbed him, leading him to a large room. There was a chair, similar to the one you’d see at the dentist, in the middle of the room. A man was stood there, watching as Andrei was placed into the chair and strapped down tightly. One around his chest, his abdomen, his waist, about two straps on his arms and legs. He struggled against these restraints when a large piece of machinery came down on his head. A piece of rubber was inserted in his mouth. He couldn’t ask what was going on, he didn’t get the chance to.
A large light beamed down on him, the light warming him but also serving to make it almost impossible to see anything.
Another sharp jab to the shoulder. He couldn’t see what drug they just administered, but whatever it was made him feel a surge of energy. He felt stronger, more alert, almost euphoric.
That was replaced when a surge of heat rushed through his body. It spread all throughout. An electric shock to the brain.
It happened methodically, sharp searing pains went through his body with every shock to the brain. He could only wail and cry. It felt like his innards were on fire. It felt like his head was going to crack open and explode, but it didn’t.
They talked to him while surging electricity through his body. Conditioning him. One thing that stuck was a set of words. Family, cannon, snow, sunset, one, house, nine, vain, twenty two, ash. They ingrained themselves in his brain. When the shocks stopped, Andrei was given time to cool off. His eyes were shut tight, his breath was ragged.
Once he managed to calm down, he opened his eyes. Everything was blurred to obscurity. He could barely make out what anything was. Every object blended into another. He blinked a few more times, thinking it was a buildup of tears, but the blurriness stayed. He could see the shape of a person leaning over him. They waved their hand across his face. Andrei narrowed his eyes, trying to see.
The person tsked.
“He’s blind.” They said. “His eyes are clouded over.”
Andrei was stunned. Blind. He was blind. He started to cry again. First they take his life, now his eyes.
“What do we do with him?” Another voice spoke up, a masculine one. The first person responded.
“Keep him. He could be useful for other things.”
Andrei was taken out of his restraints. He stumbled around in the room, trying to find his way. Doctors watched as he bumped into walls and stopped in awkward places. He soon learned to keep his hands out when he walked.
Now it had been days. The only time he got a break was to eat and sleep. He had lost any hope of getting out, any will to try and escape. Needles and electricity is what powered him now. Due to his blindness he had become Hydra’s new favorite genetic testing subject, because they lost faith in any hope that he could function as a super soldier.
It was genetic testing hour. Andrei was sat in a chair with no restraints. They didn’t feel the need as Andrei had still seemed helpless to his condition.
The doctor was preparing his tools, humming an old tune. Andrei stared ahead, but he swore he could’ve almost pinpointed the doctor’s exact location in the room. In fact, he could’ve pinpointed everything in that room. It was almost as if he could see again.
The doctor got ready to give Andrei the injection, when Andrei gripped his wrist with force. The doctor smiled.
“Pale blue eyes.” The doctor said.
“What?” Andrei responded, confused.
“You’re like the man in the book, what was it, “Tell Tale heart”? The man with the vulture eyes. Evil eyes.” The doctor started to explain. Andrei frowned and got up. He heard when the doctor called in the guards.
They dragged him back to that familiar chair. He prepared himself to have electricity surged through his body again. To have those words repeated to him again.
And so they were, but this time it was different. It was like he was losing himself. He was compelled to listen to whoever was speaking these words to him. He felt like a puppet.
“Pale blue eyes, ready to comply.” He spoke when the electricity stopped. The scientists smiled, their experiment was a success.

In 2016, there were hardly any good-looking restaurants in Tbilisi to eat or enjoy your time out as far as I remember. We walked around a lot until we found a burger place and the guys were so proud of themselves for being able to open such a place. Weird huh. This time I was so impressed with the variety and quantity of Tbilisi restaurants, cafes, and bars. Tbilisi was like heaven. We couldn’t decide which restaurants to try, which bars to crawl to, and which cafes to relax in. So we tried to at least have some snacks and drinks in most of them.

Georgian cuisine is something I am familiar with. Also, I tried some restaurants in Tbilisi for Georgian cuisine in 2016. What I learned is you need to choose little places over known restaurants. Well, Mapshalia is also well known even though it is a small restaurant owned by a family due to their cheap, large portioned, delicious dishes. We waited for almost an hour before getting a table during dinner time. After finally sitting down, we ordered Megruli style khachapuri, chicken kharcho with nuts, cheese dumplings, and mchadi. We were going to order ghomi with cheese but the lady stopped us and told us it was enough for 2 people. 
The owners and servers only spoke a few words of English but they were kind enough to try and understand my broken Russian. If you decide to go there bring cash. Credit cards are not accepted, only cash.

I love all kinds of dumplings and try them whenever possible. The first time we came there we went into a tourist restaurant near Meidani. We ordered each type of hinkals and none of them were good. They had thick uncooked skin, the insides were bad, were somehow oily. We became sick afterward and couldn’t really eat anything else for the next few days. So I was hesitant this time. My friends at the hostel told me the place I went to was the worst possible place you could try Georgian food and suggested I visit Hinkali Factory.

We went to the Hinkali Factory on Pkhovi Street and ordered regular beef hinkal and pan-fried Asian filling hinkals. Also, mushroom chebureki cause I like chebureki a lot. The hinkals were amazing. They were thin, well-cooked, and juicy. The food went well with kompot which is a fruit-based drink. Not exactly juice because you boil and strain the fruits but it is light and fresh in the end. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the mushroom chebureki. The filling was too wet so the fried dough became soggy. Also, you could only taste coriander and no mushroom at all. The prices were fair and they take credit cards.

Kazbegi Beer

Kazbegi is a local beer brand and this location is in between a store and serving hall. I took my friends there and they were shocked. The place looked like a canteen and there were only Georgian men at the tables. A total local place. No tourists at all. I enjoyed it much but I can agree the place is not for everybody. They serve snacks and fish plates as I have seen but we only ordered beer. The beer was good and cheap.

8000 Vintages is a must visit place if you are into wine. Well, I am allergic to wine but I still wanted to enjoy a good cheese plate while my friends are sipping their selection of wines. The inside was like a museum and I liked that a lot. Prices vary depending on your tasting wine but I can say they offer wines for every price range. 
Prinz Bar
Location: 37 Shota Rustaveli Ave, Tbilisi, Georgia 
If you have read my blog post on Tbilisi techno clubs and bars you may be familiar with the name Prinz Bar. The place is a vegan bar/kitchen by day and becomes a dance floor by night. The place is located on the first floor of an apartment. The entrance feels like you are entering someone’s home but the inside is really cool. I am amazed by their bbq burger made from fried oyster mushrooms. Definitely recommended. 
The only tip I can give is, that Google reviews say the Prinz Bar opens at 2 P.M. but doesn’t. So go there later. 
WU Shi 
Well, I need to tell you, Instagram made me visit this place. Their page came up as an ad in between stories. They had arcade games, playing hip-hop, and a selection of Japanese beer. So we went in, the games were there, we had fun. On the other hand, the sushi selection was really little and only basic ones had. I found the price to be expensive for the basics BUT the fish was really fresh and tasty. So I don’t regret it. For the Japanese beer, I couldn’t try any of them because they ran out of them when I visited. So if you are looking to enjoy sushi you can pay a visit.

Art-Cafe Home

I also talked about Art-Cafe home in this post. I came there first in 2016 and it was summer. The weather was nice and sunny and we watched the sunset from their terrace. This time weather was cloudy and rainy from time to time and we went in before opening time (they were kind enough to take us in). Still, I enjoyed the terrace. We got some local dark beer and sat before moving on to visit another museum. They also have an art gallery and a dancefloor for parties. 
Canudos Ethnic Bar კანუდოს ეთნიკ ბარი

I like ethnic themed places so Canudos was a must visit for me. We went there after having a late lunch in Prinz so I haven’t tried anything except their fries. The garden is nice, interior is cool, price–performance ratio is normal. Regular beer costed more than most of the places I went but it wasn’t an expensive place at all. 
Warszawa ვარშავა 
Location: 19 Aleksandr Pushkin St, Tbilisi, Georgia

Warszawa caught our eye while we were walking from Old Town Wall Ruins to Freedom Square. We decided to get a beer. People were standing outside, chatting. I realized it is a good place to make friends as everybody was talking in English at the time. Beer was regularly priced. 
Other Places 
I have went to a few other places other than the mentioned ones above. These two below are in a really far from the Tbilisi center. You need to pay a special effort to end up in this part of Tbilisi. Our main effort was to visit the Nutsubidze Skybridge. So I didn’t want to recommend them as usual places. If I weren’t to visit the bridge I would definitely pass them. 
Amra ამრა (7 Sandro Euli Street, Tbilisi 0179, Georgia) : A great place to try Abkhazian – West Georgian food. Not budget friendly at all, also I found portions small but they offer a unique cuisine. I liked their adjika chicken (don’t remember the full name) 
Strada Sandro Euli სტრადა სანდრო ეული (7 Sandro Euli Street, Tbilisi 0186, Georgia) This restaurant is right near the Amra and we accidentally
walked in while looking for Ambra and I liked the interior inside. If I had time I would try that place too

I don’t have enough experience to talk about any of them except Ambavi as we had only one drink in each and then went into another place. Typical pub crawling. I talked about Ambavi here as the place had a dj when we went and I found it suitable to enjoy a night out.

These places offer a full experience of food, specialty drinks, and interiors altogether. Read the reviews on Google if you are interested in visiting any of them and check prices beforehand. Also, don’t get surprised as the Cafe Stamba and The Kitchen has the same address. As I mentioned above they are within two hotels located near each other. 
Places I Couldn't Try But I Wanted To

A Guide for Tbilisi Restaurants and Bars

In 2016, there were hardly any good-looking restaurants in Tbilisi to eat or enjoy your time out as far as I remember. We walked around a lot until we found a burger place and the guys were so proud of themselves for being able to open such a place. Weird huh. This time I was so impressed with the variety and quantity of Tbilisi restaurants, cafes, and bars. Tbilisi was like heaven. We couldn’t decide which restaurants to try, which bars to crawl to, and which cafes to relax in. So we tried to at least have some snacks and drinks in most of them.

Georgian cuisine is something I am familiar with. Also, I tried some restaurants in Tbilisi for Georgian cuisine in 2016. What I learned is you need to choose little places over known restaurants. Well, Mapshalia is also well known even though it is a small restaurant owned by a family due to their cheap, large portioned, delicious dishes. We waited for almost an hour before getting a table during dinner time. After finally sitting down, we ordered Megruli style khachapuri, chicken kharcho with nuts, cheese dumplings, and mchadi. We were going to order ghomi with cheese but the lady stopped us and told us it was enough for 2 people. 
The owners and servers only spoke a few words of English but they were kind enough to try and understand my broken Russian. If you decide to go there bring cash. Credit cards are not accepted, only cash.

I love all kinds of dumplings and try them whenever possible. The first time we came there we went into a tourist restaurant near Meidani. We ordered each type of hinkals and none of them were good. They had thick uncooked skin, the insides were bad, were somehow oily. We became sick afterward and couldn’t really eat anything else for the next few days. So I was hesitant this time. My friends at the hostel told me the place I went to was the worst possible place you could try Georgian food and suggested I visit Hinkali Factory.

We went to the Hinkali Factory on Pkhovi Street and ordered regular beef hinkal and pan-fried Asian filling hinkals. Also, mushroom chebureki cause I like chebureki a lot. The hinkals were amazing. They were thin, well-cooked, and juicy. The food went well with kompot which is a fruit-based drink. Not exactly juice because you boil and strain the fruits but it is light and fresh in the end. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the mushroom chebureki. The filling was too wet so the fried dough became soggy. Also, you could only taste coriander and no mushroom at all. The prices were fair and they take credit cards.

Kazbegi Beer

Kazbegi is a local beer brand and this location is in between a store and serving hall. I took my friends there and they were shocked. The place looked like a canteen and there were only Georgian men at the tables. A total local place. No tourists at all. I enjoyed it much but I can agree the place is not for everybody. They serve snacks and fish plates as I have seen but we only ordered beer. The beer was good and cheap. 
8000 Vintages

8000 Vintages is a must-visit place if you are into wine. Well, I am allergic to wine but I still wanted to enjoy a good cheese plate while my friends are sipping their selection of wines. The inside was like a museum and I liked that a lot. Prices vary depending on your tasting wine but I can say they offer wines for every price range. 
Prinz Bar
Location: 37 Shota Rustaveli Ave, Tbilisi, Georgia 
If you have read my blog post on Tbilisi techno clubs and bars you may be familiar with the name Prinz Bar. The place is a vegan bar/kitchen by day and becomes a dance floor by night. The place is located on the first floor of an apartment. The entrance feels like you are entering someone’s home but the inside is really chill. I am amazed by their bbq burger made from fried oyster mushrooms. Definitely recommended. 
The only tip I can give is, that Google reviews say the Prinz Bar opens at 2 P.M. but doesn’t. So go there later. 
WU Shi 
Well, I need to tell you, Instagram made me visit this place. Their page came up as an ad in between stories. They had arcade games, playing hip-hop, and a selection of Japanese beer. So we went in, the games were there, we had fun. On the other hand, the sushi selection was really little and only basic ones had. I found the price to be expensive for the basics BUT the fish was really fresh and tasty. So I don’t regret it. For the Japanese beer, I couldn’t try any of them because they ran out of them when I visited. So if you are looking to enjoy sushi you can pay a visit.

Art-Cafe Home

I also talked about Art-Cafe home in this post. I came there first in 2016 and it was summer. The weather was nice and sunny and we watched the sunset from their terrace. This time weather was cloudy and rainy from time to time and we went in before opening time (they were kind enough to take us in). Still, I enjoyed the terrace. We got some local dark beer and sat before moving on to visit another museum. They also have an art gallery and a dancefloor for parties. 
Canudos Ethnic Bar კანუდოს ეთნიკ ბარი

I like ethnic themed places so Canudos was a must visit for me. We went there after having a late lunch in Prinz so I haven’t tried anything except their fries. The garden is nice, interior is cool, price–performance ratio is a bit above other places but ok. Regular beer cost more than most of the places I went but it wasn’t an expensive place at all. 
Warszawa ვარშავა 
Location: 19 Aleksandr Pushkin St, Tbilisi, Georgia

Warszawa caught our eye while we were walking from Old Town Wall Ruins to Freedom Square. We decided to get a beer. People were standing outside, chatting. I realized it is a good place to make friends as everybody was talking in English at the time. Beer was regularly priced. 
Other Places 
I have went to a few other places other than the mentioned ones above. 
A bit outside the center
These two below are in a really far from the Tbilisi center. You need to pay a special effort to end up in this part of Tbilisi. Our main effort was to visit the Nutsubidze Skybridge. So I didn’t want to recommend them as usual places. If I weren’t to visit the bridge I would definitely pass them. 
Amra ამრა (7 Sandro Euli Street, Tbilisi 0179, Georgia): A great place to try Abkhazian – West Georgian food. We went there as one of my friend's family was from the region but he hadn't had the chance to try local food yet. Not budget friendly at all, also I found portions small but they offer a unique cuisine. I liked their adjika chicken (don’t remember the full name) 
Strada Sandro Euli სტრადა სანდრო ეული (7 Sandro Euli Street, Tbilisi 0186, Georgia) This restaurant is right near the Amra and we accidentally walked in while looking for Ambra and I liked the interior inside. If I had time I would try that place too
