okay okay okay top ten detective conan things? what do u like most, what do you like to write about/think about, who's your favourite character, that kind of thing
Tumblr media
I'm not sure it's actually gonna be in order but whatever
1) In case it wasn't obvious I love Kaitou KID. He's an absolute little shit and each time he smirks I'm like "oh no". I have a stupid crush on this idiot. He's so fucking dramatic. My rewatch of detective conan ended up in a "let's rewatch all the movies with KID and then we'll catch up with the rest".
This is his first appearance but he's still a dumb teenager
Tumblr media
2) I miss the style of early Conan it was so so good, around when the FBI arrived I think it's when it started to really change and I found it sad. Conan little round face. Full of unbridled rage. All his littles expressions.
3) Speaking of early Conan he had such a strong gremlim energy. Like sure Shinichi as well but Conan had no limits. He got turned into a kid and decided it was going to be everyone else problem.
4) The manga is getting way too long and while I understand it's probably partly due to editorial decisions and the fact it is somewhat due to the kind of manga it is, the fact it's both trying to have a plot and stay plotless is starting to get tiring, plus we are starting to have a bit too many characters to care about,,, gimme back the original crew, I feel like we haven't seen Sonoko or Kogoro in ages.
5) For some reasons I just don't like Eisuke. No particular reason I just don't like him djdjdjd. Also for the longest time I only knew of him from fics and was expecting him to look different and when he appeared in the manga I was like shockedpikachu.png.
6) Idk I'm just rambling at this point. When I got back into the fandom I started with reading fics for a while before reading the manga and I shipped KaiShin a lot then. But after reading the manga I was like, ShinRan is so perfect and beautiful together. I love them so much. And I guess in a way KaiShin has lost some of his luster to me now djdjdj even though I still love their relationship in a platonic kind of way.
7) The latest case with the kidnapped kid is so fucking dumb,,,,, I'm like, that's not even suspension of disbelief at this point,,,,,,, I understand they want to put forward Amuro/Rei and his police friend who all died because Rei is one of the fandom favourite but also, that's why flashback and spin-off exists.
8) I still have a very soft spot in my heart for the Detective Conan one-shot I wrote about Haibara being able to say goodbye to her sister. Related but I love how Akemi's death and the Moonlight Sonata case stuck with Conan. How they influenced his character, and they're some of my favourite cases overall because we get to see how he deal with "failure", how human he is.
9) Desperate revival arc my beloved. The scene in the cave where he got Shot and the detective boys are all trying to get him out and bring him to safety and Conan still trying to guide them but passing out and aaaaaaaahhhh I just loved this so much. Another passage I really like is the halloween party where there's like Heiji disguised as Shinichi disguised as a Mummy. As a rule I just love the use of disguises. The theatre where Haibara was disguised as Conan and Heiji as a poorly done Shinichi and Shinichi as the black knight 10/10
10) I also love the way Aoyama draw when Shinichi feels his heart going when he turns back into Conan. It's just. *chef kiss*.

A Detective’s new groove  (or Conan finally gets clothes for his ghost form)
Again I got a lot of ideas for future events and hey by doing this I have an easier time writing the ‘first night’ I’m almost at the kidnapping case in my writing so at worst its going to be released a week from now, baring life issues. This is about ~5ish months in not sure yet on the timeline all I know is that it’s before Team Detective(Shinichi/Conan, Ran, Agasa, and Ai as the core group with the detective boys, and Heiji on the peripheries) and meets Team Phantom (which is going to be planned for during ‘Realty Trip’ after all that concert was broadcast worldwide if I remember right and well that is the first proof Shinichi has that he isn’t alone... Plus Freakshow is right up Shinichi’s alley) but after they met Haibara Ai
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ran blinks as she recovers from the bright light blue flash that marks her Best Friend/boyfriend’s age shift... maybe she should have knocked first as she looks at a seven year old Shinichi/Conan who looks like he is recovering from a heart attack and trying to hurriedly put on his glasses.
“Ran please knock before you walk into the room!” Conan yells “You nearly gave me a heart attack, I thought Oji-san had come home early! Do you have any idea how bad it would be for him to find out I’m Shinichi!”
“I don’t think Otou-san knowing would be that bad... he honestly can’t be worse then Hattori-san. Seriously does he even realize how much in danger he's putting you both in. We made the alias of Edogawa Conan for a reason!” Ran rants her honest frustration coming out with every word, Ran pauses and looks at Conan, “Um, Why did you age-shift in the first place? Don’t you normally try to avoid doing so as much as possible?”
Conan blushes, “I wanted to reach Oji-san’s case files without flying. I may be used to my powers now, but sometimes I really don’t feel like using them much. Also if Oji-san find out I’m Shinichi he will likely kick me out! I don’t want to go back to my stupid Mansion!” Conan sticks out his tongue in pure disgust, and not for the first time Ran picks up Shinichi’s more child-like tendencies when he's age-shifted.
It’s really interesting that he never notices himself and to be honest its those same tendencies that helps her keep the names straight, so she isn’t going to argue with them.
Ran startles as she suddenly remembers why she came in to see him in the first place. “Right, Conan I came in to tell you that Sonoko is having a costume party this next weekend, and though you can’t go as Shinichi. I already asked Sonoko if I can bring you as Conan along and she agreed. I bought a few costumes you can choose from for it as well... I hope we don’t end with a murder again.”
Conan gives a slight glare and mumbles, “we don’t run into murders all the time.” As he walks toward the table in the next room over with the five bags of costumes on it.
The first bag Conan reaches into to take out the costume inside contains a cheap superman costume which gets a maybe if their is nothing else better. The second contains a crappy Vampire costume that gets rejected outright.
The third gets Ran a glare as Conan pulls out a mini Kaitou KID outfit. This costume doesn’t just get rejected, it gets kicked into the trash as Ran just about dies laughing at Conan’s face. The fourth is not much better as its a puppy costume so that gets trashed as well.
The last bag and the last costume choice was different from the others. Its grayscale with mostly lighter grays, the cloth its made of is stretchy, and the whole costume is very reminiscent of the classic outfit worn by Sherlock Holmes. Its extremely well made and Conan face literally lights up at the sight of it as his eyes start glowing brightly.
“Ran, Ran! It’s perfect I’m putting it on right now!” Conan excitedly says looking all the world like the seven year old he appears to be as he literally starts changing in the middle of the room. Ran was about to stop him but is frozen when arcs of white light crackle across his skin. Something ghostly is going on with her friend and by this time she’s learned its better to let nature run its course.
Conan quickly changes out of his casual clothes and into the Sherlock costume. Its one size to big but Conan doesn’t seem to care or notice, as he is grinning so wide that If Ran didn’t know he was only part human she would be afraid he would injure himself.
The arcing white light seems to touch every part of the costume changing it with every touch It inverts the colors and changes the fit so its perfect. When it touches his hair where it pokes out under the hat it turns the hair white. The white light builds and builds and before both of them know it Conan is forced completely into his ghost form in an involuntary transformation, but unlike the many times before Conan has clothes on. The costume Ran just bought has had the colors inverted and made to fit Conan perfectly.
“Ran? what just happened? why am I a ghost? I don’t remember changing.” Conan asks confused as he looks down on himself and his new outfit. He really does look like a mini-detective with that outfit on.
“I think we finally figured out how to put clothes on your ghost form. Other then that I’m not sure” Ran says as Conan tilts his head with curiosity, “What ever just happened is likely a ghost thing we can’t explain right now, though.”
“Wait, do you really think they will stick?” Conan asks as he summons the transformation ring to turn himself back into a human.
As the transformation rolls over Conan, Ran snorts. “I do believe so given that now it seems the naked one is your human form.” Ran states as the Rings leave Conan standing only in his underwear
“Eep,” Conan squeaks out before grabbing his clothes and rushing to put them on. Once he has clothes on again he asks, “Do you think you can get another one by the costume party, I really like that outfit.”
“Mabye, if you behave and get the two costume out of the trash so I can get a return on them.” Ran says and as Conan scrambles to recover the thrown away costume, Ran can’t help but sigh.
Just another day as the best friend of an age-changing, Yūrei Hanyou, detective, that moonlights as a seven year old after all
DISCLAIMER: HUGE, LONG RANT AHEAD!
ALSO SPOILERS IN CASE YOU'RE NOT UP TO DATE WITH THE MANGA OR WITH ZERO THE ENFORCER!
Soo in case you missed it, Gosho released the SDB Justice Plus some time last month:
Tumblr media
The biggest shocker was the answer to Question number 4, shown below:
Tumblr media
Basically this translates to:
Q4: On the Mystery Train, he (Amuro) said to Miyano Shiho that “My comrades who are tracking us have made arrangements in order to retrieve you”, but were those comrades from PSB? If that’s the case, I’m curious about how he planned to deceive Vermouth...!
A: Those were comrades from the Black Organization, so there was no need to deceive them.
Ummmm...what??
Tumblr media
Idk about y'all but when I read this, I was livid. It didn’t make any sense to me. And quite frankly, I didn't want it to. Maybe because I am one of those (very rare) people who thought Rei and Shiho could eventually end up together (Don't laugh, it would have made sense, and I'll write about that in a separate post).
Anywho, safe to say Gosho's latest confession left me in absolute confusion. Like why? Just why? Then I realised I'm more butt-hurt about this because I was fixated on a certain idea of Rei's character and chose to ignore his other sides, as if they didn't exist. It didn't help that his past is so freaking depressing which got me sympathizing with his character and led me to either ignore or make excuses for any red flags.
But now that I think about it, it sadly makes sense. It also explains why he didn't show any sadness or regret when he saw Shiho supposedly ‘die’ in the luggage cart in the Bell Tree Train Arc.
Now to let me wrap my head around this, I needed to breakdown his three "faces":
1. Amuro Tooru is a cheerful, friendly, generous, carefree, outgoing man.
2. Furuya Rei is a serious, law-abiding, calculating, patriotic police officer who is willing to die for Japan's security.
3. And Bourbon is a devious, manipulative, cunning, deadly agent.
Yet, ever since we found out he was in fact an NPA agent, we (or at least I), seem to have forgotten about those dark sides he possesses. Also with Zero's tea time showing us a softer side of his character it was easy to get caught up in "he's 100% one of the god guys" when in fact, he's a complex, grey character.
He has shown on multiple occasions, just how far he is willing to go, to achieve whatever goal he’s set his mind on. Let's not forget how in Zero the Enforcer, he completely flipped the switch. (I know this isn't Canon but...) The man went as far as to create a suspect and jail the innocent Mori Kogoro so he can legally investigate the case and emotionally manipulate Conan into unkowningly help with the investigation.
Tumblr media
Also, in the Detective Nocturne’s case he deliberately didn’t tell Ran as soon as he noticed Conan might have been kidnapped by the criminal because he hadn’t finished investigating the apartment.
Tumblr media
And in the Scarlet Arc, he was willing to harm Jodie's teacher friend, so he can lure out the FBI and advance his investigation on Akai’s death. Let’s not forget once he figured out the truth, he was willing to expose Akai’s fake death (which I get it he's out for revenge), but by doing so, he would have also gotten Kir killed (even though I'm pretty sure he knew at that point, she was in fact a NOC).
As we can see, be it Bourbon, Furuya Rei or  Amuro Toru, he will stop at nothing to reach his goals, even if it means throwing innocent people under the bus. So, now when Gosho says his "partners" were in fact BO members and not the PSB, I'm no longer surprised.
I mean, why wouldn’t he sell Shiho back to the organisation? Because he knew she was Sensei’s daughter, and that should have meant something to him? Alright, let’s talk about that.
Did he love Shiho’s mum? Yes, he did, there’s no doubt about that (one of the reasons he joined the joined the police in the first place was to find her, so you can't convince me otherwise).
Tumblr media
But what if he loved Japan even more? (It's not canon, but he did say in Zero the Enforcer that the safety of this country matters most to him, even if it means he’d end up paying with his own life).
Tumblr media
So, I'm going to take a wild guess as to how he could have felt when he found out the woman he loved as his own mother, willingly joined the deadly organisation that threatened the safety of his country. Based on his memories, he remembered her encouraging her husband to join the Carasuma group.
Tumblr media
So, if through his investigations, he was able to realise she is the same woman from his childhood, I’m pretty sure he would have been very disappointed.  I’m not sure the extent of his knowledge about the drug, but if he also found out their research created the poisonous APTX-4869, I reckon it would be more reason for him to be upset.
Now let's talk about Haibara/Shiho. To any outsider who's unaware of the truth of her past, she is a woman born into the organisation, then was groomed and taught from a young age by the syndicate and promoted to take on their research. A research that produced a poisonous drug, just like her parents did. Also, she only ran away after the organisation killed her sister. Before that, she was a high-ranking member. With all these facts, why would he think of her as anything but a criminal just like the rest of the BO members? It’d be rather foolish for him to not hand her back to the organisation just because she is the daughter of the woman he once thought so highly of. If anything, he’d be killing two birds with one stone, by executing a criminal, while also gaining higher standing in the organisation.
As fans of Haibara, we are rightfully upset by his intentions of returning her to the organisation because we know her truth. He doesn't. It wasn't until we learnt more about her painful past and kind and caring nature that we grew to love her. We know she never wanted to create a poisonous drug. That she already hated the organisation for using the drug as a poison. That she had to develop the drug to protect Akemi’s life.
Tumblr media
There is no way Rei would have known about any of the bullying she or her family faced from the BO. By nature, Shiho is very secretive and reserved and very little of her personality or history would have been known by any of the BO members (except maybe Gin). Therefore, apart from the files the BO would have kept on Shiho and her role in the organisation, that’s all Rei had to learn about her. So, I can’t really blame him for choosing to hand her back to the organisation.
Some people who are still in denial, argue that if he planned to kill Shiho, why was he willing to kill whom he thought was Vermouth instead of handing her over?
Tumblr media
Shouldn’t that prove he was going to take Shiho to safety to the PSB, not the BO? Before Gosho's statement, I would have agreed but now...sigh. Now, I get why he did that. If Shiho were to die BEFORE she was returned to the organisation, he wouldn’t have gained the trust he was seeking. If she were to die AFTER he delivered her, I highly doubt it would have mattered to him. Although I'm still hoping he maybe he had a plan of not leaving her in the organisation's clutches after "handing her back" and he never truly intended on getting her killed. But since Gosho also said there was no need to deceive Vermouth, I highly doubt it. (Heart breaking).
After such an explanation, does everything make more sense now? Maybe. Am I ok with it? Hell no! I’m quite angry and annoyed that this is how things turned out to be, but it is what it is. We have to accept that Rei is not a good character, and he's not a bad character. He's a grey character and when you think of it that way, it's easier to understand his behaviour. Not that I agree with it. After Gosho's statement, I think pretty sure Rei is in dire need of some character development. He could stand to learn a thing or two from Conan who manages to reach his goals while preserving as many lives as possible (Akai's fake death being the burst example while managing to drive Kir back to the BO).
For now, I’m looking forward to the developments that will entail. I’m curious to see how Rei and Haibara will react once they eventually meet each other. It'll be interesting to see what will go through his mind once he figures out her true identity. One thing I'm sure of is once they're introduced to each other, emotions will be running high and things will get intense. Which honestly, I can't wait for and I'm counting down the days till I get a proper Amuro/Haibara interaction.
Reasons why Detective Conan is ridiculous but I love it anyway
It occurs to me since it’s not as popular as other anime outside of Japan, that some people might not understand why DC is a lovable, infuriating story. It’s partially bc it is a really fun, well written mystery manga but also bc when you get down to it, the story makes -12 sense and you have to suspend so much disbelief to get through it. I’ve taken the liberty of listing some examples.
- the whole premise of the story centers around 17 year old high school detective (I’ll get back to that) Kudo Shinichi coming across a pair of villains at a theme park later called The Black Organization and is given a pill meant to kill him but instead it turns him into a 7 year old again. Yeah, that’s just the start of the bullshit.
- Like all teenagers magically turned into children, he runs home to his mad scientist next door neighbor to complain. His childhood best friend/not girlfriend/girlfriend fucking 1000 chapters later, Ran, shows up looking for Shinichi. This lil bitch puts on glasses and makes up a super fake name (Edogawa Conan after 2 mystery authors) and expects Ran, who has known him l i t e r a l l y forever to believe. She does, god knows why, and decides to take him back to live with her and her drunk father because? sure why not?
- I stress again, Ran has known Shinichi pretty much their entire life and this Cona kid looks just like him as a child, has the exact same niche interests, acts like someone who once saw a child on TV and thinks that’s how children act, knows a suspicious amount about her. There’s so many times where she suspects the truth and then later changes her mind because of some lameass excuse. Granted, it is a bit far fetched that your friend (now missing) would turn into a 7 year old but jESUS the evidence is so clear. Ran deserves better 2k18
- also she just took ‘Conan’ home with her and he’s lived there now for years a long time. Child kidnapping? Who cares! Occasionally some money comes from Conan’s ‘parents’ (actually Shinichi’s actual parents who are enabling this charade but that’s ANOTHER story) but he basically is adopted into this family and no one?? says anything??
- So back to the high school detectives, there’s a bunch. Basically they are insanely creepily smart high schoolers who help the police solving mysteries on their own time. There’s Heiji, Hakuba, Sera, plus all the people from the Detective Koushin thing. Like why? Are so many teens going out solving murders? Is that the new hip thing, talking a line from Scooby Doo where kids go solve mysteries instead of smoking weed?
- I should also add that even beyond the high school detective there are so many other insanely talented young geniuses, Kaito Kid, the world’s greatest magician thief is also 17. There’s also talented police, FBI agents, scientists, spies, ect who are under 25 like what why, I cry going to the grocery story and this 17 year old is solving international cases in-between school events.
- So these incredible young geniuses exist and the police just? lets them help? most of the force (except for the few notable ones) are incompetent and these teens detectives waltz in and solve cases their elders cannot.
-Worse yet, most of these murders occur while out and about. Teens are hanging out without concern and bam! someone is murdered, whelp so much for my day off, better solve the case (which conveniently has around three suspects). I worry for the population of Japan considering how many people are murdered/confess to murder each week.
- Conan is an actual God of Death so many people die around him wtf
- Did I mention there’s MORE adults who have been turned into children? There’s Conan, also Haibara a young teen genius scientist for the Black Org who tried to commit suicide but ended up shrunken. She’s even worse at playing a child than Shinichi. There’s another another lady who’s supposedly the mother of teen detective Sera and also Akai, an FBI agent working in Japan to fight the Black Org who had to fake his death to ensure the safety of a double agent in the BO and has been living under an assumed named in Shinichi’s old house.
Yeah, that’s just a TASTE of what some these storylines are like.
- So Conan, being 7, is forced to attend elementary school despite not really existing as a person with documentation? Anyway, he’s pretty depressed about it but luckily he forms a group with some other 7 year olds called the Detective Boys and they solve mysteries. Now normally when you say a group of 7 year olds are solving mysteries, you expect lost cats and such. No. Between Conan and Haibara they are front and center working along side the police and making headlines fighting real deadly criminals. If I was their parents I would pull my child out of school and away from Death Magnet Edogawa Conan
- I mentioned the police are willing to work with high school detectives? Same goes with the elementary school detectives. The Detective Boys are often found at crime scenes and you often see officers leaning down to honest to god listen to what the kids have to say about a murder. I’m near tears because I wish I was making this up but its right there in black and white.
- The romance is also bullshit. There’s so many fucking couples and about 90% of them are all childhood friends destined for each other. There’s Shinichi/Ran, Eri/Kogoro, Heiji/Kazuha, Aoko/Kaito, Miike/Chiba, Shiratori/Kobayashi, Agasa/Fusae and probably a fuck ton more but there’s. so. many omg.
- And, and, the biggest piece of the fucking pie. Detective Conan started in 1994 so it is now 24 years old. It has 1019 chapters currently and shows no signs of slowing down. It was revealed in a fairly recent chapter (to celebrate the 20th anniversary ironically enough) that the whole series from nut to butt takes place within a year. within a year. within a YEAR. Do you have anY idea how many murders occurred in a year?? the population of that area of Japan has decreased by like 65%, there shouldn’t be people ALIVE anymore. They’ve had like 8 White Day and Valentines day, how do you explain that bullshit??? You CanT, you just kind of got to smile, nod and keep reading and ignoring every single instance of bullshit I see in order to progress with the story.
Unless you are willing to believe the stupidest bullshit, DC is not for you.
Note
hakase just outright told Shinichi’s parents about the situation early in the show which led to their introduction when they “kidnapped” their son. but what if he didn’t? because Shinichi asked him not to? this might have postponed the introduction of Yukiko and Yusaku (and maybe wouldn’t have turned out to be this extra extra) fooling Ran may be doable (with very much effort) but do you think Shinichi would succeed in fooling his parents? especially Yusaku?
The thing is, from a writing viewpoint, the only reason why Yukiko and Yusaku were actually introduced was because they were going to be fundamental to the Organization-related plot. If you think back on the first episode, we don’t get much information about the Kudos other than the smallest mention of them living in America and Yusaku being a writer who is really smart. It takes Aoyama… what, like ten or so episodes (maybe more, I can’t recall the actual number of that case) to really introduce the Kudos, and when he does, we not only get a perfect picture of what they’re like (insane extra motherfuckers), but we’re also hinted as to their (or Yusaku’s, rather) possible key role in taking down the Organization.
In other words, if Agasa hadn’t told Shinichi’s parents about his situation, we would’ve probably never seen them, because they weren’t going to become relevant figures. From the get-go we know that the Kudos aren’t too involved in Shinichi’s life. They left him when he was like 13, and it doesn’t look like they keep tabs on Shinichi. Plus, Shinichi barely even thinks about them. The first person he thinks about when he shrinks is Ran, not his parents, which would kind of be the logical way to go. You know what I mean?
So I don’t think it’s a question of whether Shinichi would’ve been clever enough to keep his identity a secret from his parents, because, had they not appeared, they wouldn’t have been significant enough characters for us to worry about that. Also, from a logical standpoint, it would’ve been almost impossible for Shinichi to hide from his own parents that he was now Conan.
If you want the literal answer to your question, I guess it’s no. Because Yusaku and Yukiko would’ve seen right through him in a matter of seconds. But again, I don’t think, had they not shown up, we would’ve had to worry about them too much plot-wise.
Does this make sense? It’s hard to explain.
Allow me to take advantage of this ask to point out that I just realized Yusaku’s deduction about the Organization’s boss is directly linked to his first appearance. Let me explain: during the Conan Edogawa Kidnapping Case, Shinichi makes it especially clear that that’s, and I quote, “[his] case and [he] is going to solve it” despite the fact that we instantly know that Yusaku is Shinichi’s Mycroft, and that he quite frankly probably figured out who killed the Kennedys and is just sitting on the answer.
I was kind of disappointed that Aoyama didn’t give the Karasuma deduction to Shinichi, because, this is his case that he is going to solve, but when you think about it, it makes narrative sense. It’s dramatic irony at its finest, because Yusaku (and Akai) have to be the ones to clue Shinichi in as to who really is behind the Organization, because Shinichi needs to realize that he can’t fight this battle on his own. When he first stubbornly declares that he doesn’t need anyone’s help because it’s his case, we haven’t even begun to get to know Akai, or Amuro, or even Haibara. Shinichi really is alone in the fight. But slowly, we learn that he has allies he can count on. That it isn’t simply his battle. So Yusaku showing up and straight up proving to him that he wasn’t capable of deducing that Karasuma is behind the Organization isn’t a blow to Shinichi’s confidence or capacities, it is a reminder that he can’t fight this alone, and that, more importantly, he doesn’t have to. Because if he goes at it alone, he won’t win.
Shinichi, however, has understood that by that point, because when Yusaku tells him they’re staying in Japan, he says it’s exactly what he wanted. Because a large chunk of Shinichi’s character development has been trusting and learning to rely on other people. And by now, he’s okay with it. He knows he has to.
You know what that is?
Growth.
Grimoire of Zero 10 - 11 | Royal Tutor 11 - 12 (FINAL) | Kado 10 | Boku no Hero Academia 25 | Tsukigakirei 10 - 11...plus summer 2017 anticipated anime.
Just gonna put this here so it gets more attention while it’s open.-> http://www.strawpoll.me/13311671
Grimoire of Zero 10
Geez, the staff pulled a Kado 0 - 1 on us here…i.e. the ending of one ep is the same as the opening of the next ep. It’s just to a lesser extent than Kado did.
Seriously, who is Him??? They still haven’t told us!
Welp, there’s my answer. It was too obvious to centre a 12 episode series around, I would’ve given a plot point like that about…3 or 4 eps, tops.
Grimoire of Zero 11
The thing about this show is that you can just turn your brain off and watch along. It’s a tad slow, but enjoyable and that’s why I’ve stuck with it.
LOL, I understand what it’s like to have “messy, wormlike handwriting”…
I don’t believe a wisp of that karate chop, Holdem. The hand was at the wrong angle.
Finally, the show gets funny again. There’s the Zero we know.
I love the sense of scale the animators have demonstrated with the spells. Just saying that before I have no more chances to.
Ooh! Oh, that man. I actually side with Holdem on this one, he deserved that punch.
“I-“ – Ooh, at that moment I got completely engrossed in the cliffhanger. Normally shows don’t cut off in the middle of a sentence, do they?
Royal Tutor 11
I can’t believe they forcibly took Gregor. Isn’t there some kind of legal offence for-oh wait. That’s called kidnapping. (partially sarcastic)
I’ve always found it interesting that the princes have to refer to the king as such, rather than “dad”. That seems to be a problem in every single piece of media you get about royalty, although these guys have a conscious sort of “I am no longer the king, but your father” (and vice versa) switch which is controlled by Viktor.
Oh, so it’s basically all the Dickensian stuff you get in Oliver Twist…(I haven’t read it, but you know how it is with classics *rolls eyes*).
Heine’s movements are believable, but there’s some suspension of belief needed for Viktor’s (because he faints a little too fast, I think).
Welp, this ain’t quite crying material, but I can tell there was a “climax” where the audience was expected to cry. Knowing this is anime-only material keeps my eyes dry, I guess. However, knowing that Heine’s resigned as Royal Tutor really made my heart drop…after all, this is the second last episode, and I’ve really had fun watching these princes and their diminuitive tutor.
Royal Tutor 12
Bruno really likes Gendo poses, doesn’t he?
Heine’s voice is great for a noob VA. It really sells the character.
I always thought “hai-neh” was a weird pronunciation, but that’s what it says in the katakana.
Seeing Heine tell others their strengths really makes me feel like I’m missing them already, in a good way. I’m not tearing up yet, but it’s real heartwarming and I know if I were in the same situation, I’d cry too.
“Goodbye” isn’t quite “excuse me”, but I guess it works context-wise.
This is one of those shows where “show, don’t tell” works well and I think the show’s nailed it for the most part.
University degrees don’t necessrily make good tutors. Any student knows that, especially in uni.
I can see why even the author cried at this now, even though I’m still not crying.
W-Who’s that? With the dark hair? Eins???
Ah, there’s my answer. It was indeed Eins. Why does he have dark hair???
Welp, there’s one finale for the spring season over. The anime staff really couldn’t have done too much about Eins, though, which sucks. Come back another time for a different show, ‘kay?
Kado 10
I’m in that weird stage where I want to like Kado, but because everyone’s jumped ship, I won’t want to like it either…what a weird thing peer pressure is. *feels like crying*
I feel like I’m in Superhero Project (one of my stories) where protag Keisuke wakes up in a white expansive room to be trained in his powers. Only this time, they gave the room fractals.
Interesting. It’s like an alien LINE convo.
Sarasouju tree…apparently, it’s this thing. Commonly known as “sal”. I’ve never heard of it, though.
“Humans are ephermeal creatures.” – You remind me of Haibara (Detective Conan).
“There’re guns everywhere in America!” – LOL, that sure ain’t the truth, as much as America has gun problems.
Let’s play another common anime game. It’s called “Spot the Main Character from their Hair Colour”.
(SPOILERS for White Parasite from now on!) zaShunina’s still teetering on “cuckoo” from his facial expressions here. It’s sad, because I wanted him to be mysterious and beautiful like La Luna forever...that’s why I killed La Luna off!
*sigh* Okay, evil mastermind pretender, put your hands back on and please just negotiate like you wanted to in the beginning. (*on the brink of tears* Hey, I realised something. I keep making comparisons to White Parasite, but people find it confusing. By making those comparisons, I seem to have almost jinxed Kado to be this way.)
*crying because Shindo* La Luna’s force of living was the goodwill that it used to create its powers. Does that mean the anisotropic run off trust in the same way? (By the way, please don’t resurrect Shindo. That would break the laws of reality as we know it – even anisotropic laws.) (end spoilers)
Welp, I guess not. B-But, my dreams just got ruined by Saraka kissing Shindo (although the Kado tag spoilered it for me anyway)…
Pffffft. Okkkkkkay, Captain Shang, hold up!
Shindo’s angry face at Saraka wearing his shirt had me dying. He really is Captain Shang.
Kado. You were so beautiful at first. I placed my faith in you. B-But you changed, and now all I can do is see you through as you become a cliché fest I could have easily created with my own hands. In fact, I did create a Kado with my own hands - White Parasite. So I am the one to blame…I will have to see this through as I have seen through White Parasite.
Boku no Hero Academia 25
Well, that certainly threw me for a loop. Between two forces of roughly even power, it’s unpredictable who’ll win, but the ability to humanise a character comes with weaknesses. I know that already, as a writer and reader of hero stories.
All Might is such a fatherly type. I don’t think I could write a character like him – both OP yet grounded at the same time.
Plus Ultra!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wait, the woman with red streaks is his…aunty? Sister? I’m not sure at all.
Aw, this Shouto segment was just too good. I’m worried about Iida though, because from the Stain stuff I’ve seen floating around, he will not take the defeat of his bro lightly. Also, amazarashi is coming in the next part of BnHA! I loved Speed to Masatsu, so it’s good to meet him again here.
Tsukigakirei 10
“An Encouragement of Learning” is a Fukuzawa work.
From Kawagoe to Chiba it really is about 2 hrs. Look.
Oh great. Bad CGI people strike again…
Monzenyokocho.
Did Hira have kawaii eyes just as the other people thrust trash at him?
Imokoi is a Kawagoe specialty involving…wait for it…sweet potatoes. That’s why the sweet potato mascot makes sense.
My eyes!!!!!!!! Bad CGI people stand out more in night scenes (compared to day scenes, of course).
Toki no Kane, apparently also known as the Bell of Time.
The “game” in question, that rock paper scissors, was probably a batsu (penalty) game.
I guess I should’ve guessed Kotarou would’ve gotten angry at Hira eventually. I just didn’t think it would be now.
That shot of Kotarou walking down the street looked a little awkward because it looked like he was walking on a flat surface when it’s actually slanted.
It’s not just my video, is it? Akane’s crying got sped up and that pulled me out of what was meant to be an immersive scene.
Chotto matte means “wait a bit”, but I feel like “I’ll be right there” is warping the meaning a lil’ too much.
Well, I never expected this show to portray anger. It pulled Kotarou’s anger off really well.
I never thought I’d see the day where Kotarou would rely on the potato mascot, either. I like a show that goes out of its way to be unpredictable like this. Too bad it came a little too late in the game.
Tsukigakirei is all about following the heart and not necessarily the mind, so this is a pefect way to show it.
Oh! That was another good unexpected thing, but then they’ve been teasing that since the fireworks. Too bad they kept part of Kotarou’s face hidden right after it.
This end of ep LINE convo is about a couple that can’t sleep, so one of them starts talking about their part time job…then it gets cut off.
Oh, so that’s how Sakura is related to the main events…okay.
Tsukigakirei 11
“To decide that I’m hopeless before I even begin is nothing but laziness.” - Wise words, Dazai.
Were there always two potato mascots at the top of 13.70? I think one appeared there when Kotarou first received his, actually, although I’m not bothered to look…
The people aren’t CGI now…or I’ve somehow gotten used to them…? Either way, they’ve stepped up their animation game (in exchange for ep 12 being late, according to a note on the CR page).
That’s a cute jumper, Akane.
The fact Kotarou changes his message is something I can relate with. Even one forum post can take hours to type, even though time is always never on my side.
What’s that purple thing on the onigiri plate? A pickled plum? No, those are red…
A “root for the underdog” story is a classic, so I can see why Roman’s rooting for Kotarou.
Hahaha…yeah, let’s just sat I can’t understand the science for the life of me and leave it at that. That stuff’s chemistry, I haven’t touched it since I was 14 or 15.
The stuff about circles appears to be on segments, equal angles and so on (you know how you find the angle of a triangle based on where it is in a circle? Yeah, stuff like that).
Oh yeah, I never thought this but…Kawagoe Seminar. It’s named like Sailor Moon’s Crystal Seminar, and for good reason – both are cram schools.
There’s a grade score near Kotarou’s wrist, so understandably he got an A in Japanese.
Parents aren’t like that, Kotarou. They don’t always hope for your failure, they just hope you’ll do well in life…says someone whose parents have aways supported them.
Instead of having CGI people moving, they’ve finally done 2D people. However, the tradeoff is that now the people are not moving, which is just as weird if not even weirder.
“PoPo” is such a weird name for a shop, LOL.
No wait, I take part of my comment about 2D people back. There is still CGI, it’s just less prononced now they’ve bothered to put in 2D background people as well.
That scarf goes well with his outfit…says someone who sucks at coordinating outfits.
Why not just talk with her when you’re ready, Kotarou? If The Royal Tutor taught me anything, it’s that it’s always good to talk things over if you can’t understand each other.
Aitai can mean “want to meet”(like you’re meant to do to make the fish a heart), but the ai is in hiragana (so it doesn’t mean anything) and the kanji for tai used means “red snapper”. As in, the fish.
There’s a lot of ganbaru (try your hardest) used in this ep, and Kotarou says benkyouganbaresou in this “Sorry it didn’t turn out so great” convo. The nuance is therefore lost in the translated version, “I feel like I’m ready to study again starting tomorrow”, although I can’t suggest a better alternative.
Yeah, Kotarou’s mother is right. If you have a normal sleep schedule, you’re able to work better, despite how great it may be to sleep in.
I get easily lost on public transport, so I understand the vibe Kotarou’s parents are giving off.
This ep’s ED LINE convo is two people (one’s a guy, the other I don’t know the gender of) talking about studying and, at the start of the convo, the guy’s mother being angry. At the end of the convo it turns out the guy’s notebook was blank (and that’s the punchline to the convo).
Well, I’ll confirm my lineup for summer here and now. Licensing’s already being doled out as we speak so some of the lineup’s set in stone already. In order of hype:
Definite hype:
Boku no Hero Academia 2* (carryover)
Katsugeki Touken Ranbu*
Reflection*
Nana Maru San Batsu
Kaito x Ansa (already binged Nazotokine to prepare)
Nobunaga no Shinobi ~ Ise to Kanegasaki-hen ~* (see below, carryover)
Medium - low hype:
Vatican Kiseki Chousakan
Princess Principal
Jikan no Shihaisha (seen the first chapter or so of the manga)
Isekai Shokudou*
18if
Youkai Apato
Clione no Akari
Konbini Kareshi
Zannen Onna
Asterisks mean licensing’s been confirmed already for me as of this post - I’ve asterisked anything confirmed to be by CR this season, because that’s likely to be worldwide bar Asia. Katsugeki is the only known show out of the asterisks that isn’t a CR stream.
Funi’s opened up its services to my region (due to the CR x Funi merger), I could probably watch 18if there, but 1) I feel like Funi doesn’t have a good enough player, and 2) I feel like it’ll show up on a service that has a better player.
You’ll notice Nobunaga no Shinobi, a carryover from the last season I previously didn’t care for, is on the list. I was looking at YouTube videos of people’s favourite OPs and I fell in love with Shirayuki (by Renka, it’s the OP for the current season) recently, so I binged the existing content in one day. However, it being a short series means it’s not eligible for simulcast commentary and I’ll have to make a separate ranking for short series once I make my year-end rankings (to include ~ Ise to Kanegasaki-hen ~, and because watching Kenka Bancho Otome has screwed my rankings over enough as it is). After all, my 2016 ranking policy was “a show I saw at least once over in 2016 and had at least one seasonal entry in 2016″, which if applied to this year would make Nobunaga no Shinobi eligible, but it would be unfair to pit it against any shows with standard 24 min eps.
