Doyoung shot up in bed when his phone began ringing. It wasn’t terribly late, only around 10 PM, but he didn’t usually receive late phone calls. “Hello?” he questioned. He hadn’t been asleep, yet, but merely staring up at the ceiling as the night sky taunted him.
“Doyoung! Good, you answered,” his friend, Byounggon, exclaimed. “So, Y/N’s here right now and I’m not sure what’s wrong, but she’s really drunk and I didn’t know who else to call.”
Byounggon worked at the karaoke place you and Doyoung went to together often, so that was how the three of you became friends. “Really? Shoot, okay. I’ll try to get there soon, Hyung.”
He ended the call and received another immediately after. “Who were you talking to?” his mother asked immediately. She and his father were celebrating their anniversary in Jeju, so he was home alone for the next three days. “I’ve been trying to call, but the line was busy.”
“Sorry, Mom, I was on the phone with Byounggon-hyung,” he confessed. “I guess something’s wrong with Y/N-noona, so he asked me for help.”
His mother was concerned. “Really? Is she okay?”
Shaking his head, he got out of bed. “I don’t think so. I guess she’s really upset about something.” You only ever got drunk when you were upset, so it wasn’t a lie. “I think I have to go out and make sure she’s okay.”
The idea of him going out late at night when he was alone wasn’t a very pleasing one to his mother, but she knew how important you were to Doyoung. Besides, she was also quite fond of you after knowing you for many years, so she also wanted to make sure you were okay. “That’s fine, but text me once you get home, okay?” she asked.
“Of course, Mom. I gotta go,” he said, pulling a random pair of black pants on. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
The call was ended and Doyoung put a jacket on over the shirt he was wearing, quickly shoving his feet into his black Converse. He grabbed his wallet, house key, and shoved them into his jacket pockets along with his phone before leaving.
He was glad it wasn't late because it meant the buses were still running. As the bus drove, he nervously tapped his foot. He hated the idea of you drunk and alone in one of the karaoke rooms. Why were you upset? You were meeting your boyfriend for dinner, so had that gone wrong? All these thoughts only made him more anxious and he just wanted to get to the karaoke place quickly.
“Good, you're here,” Byounggon said, looking relieved. “She's in room five. She's been here for a few hours and I didn't know what to do. I've just been adding time because she starts crying if she's not singing.”
Doyoung nodded. “Okay, thanks for keeping an eye on her, Hyung,” he said before going to your room. Opening the door, he found you on your feet hopping around as you sang along to “Cheer Up” by Twice. “Noona…”
At the sound of Doyoung's voice, you stopped singing and smiled. “My Doyounggie is here!” you cheered. He looked around and saw all the empty beer and soju bottles. “Now it's a real party!”
You only had enough time for one more song. “Sing me a song, Noona.”
Nodding, you picked a song. “Because I’m Stupid” by SS501 started playing and Doyoung frowned. It seemed something bad did happen between you and your boyfriend. As you sang the song, you began crying. When your soft crying turned to sobbing, Doyoung was quick to hug you and you immediately collapsed into his arms, crying into his chest.
“He dumped me,” you managed out.
Doyoung’s heart dropped. Your boyfriend dumped you? How? Why? You guys were supposed to be going on a date, but your boyfriend decided to dump you during it? He thought you guys were both really happy together and, although he always hated the thought, he did believe you might get married. So, to say he was surprised would be an understatement.
After that, you quickly fell asleep. “My shift just ended, I’ll give you guys a ride,” Byounggon said, helping Doyoung get you into the car. “So, what happened?”
“I guess her boyfriend dumped her,” Doyoung told him. “If I’m shocked, I bet it was even worse for her.”
Byounggon nodded. He rarely saw you with your boyfriend, but he had a couple of times and always thought the two of you looked so in love. “Still, maybe it’s for the best.”
Doyoung cocked an eyebrow, “Huh?”
“Well, if he dumped her out of the blue, he’s gotta be a jerk deep down. No guy with a good heart would be able to do that without having a good reason, but I’m guessing he doesn’t,” he explained. “And, on top of that, now you have a chance.”
“W-what? Me?” Doyoung asked, letting out a nervous chuckle. “What are you talking about?”
Byounggon snickered. “Come on, Doyoung, I know you like Y/N. You look at her like she’s your whole world.”
That made Doyoung sigh. “Am I that transparent?”
“Maybe I just notice, but Y/N certainly doesn’t see it,” Byounggon told him. “But, I think you guys would be cute together.”
“Yeah, well Noona just thinks I’m a kid,” Doyoung groaned. “She looks at me like a kid and treats me like a kid.”
Byounggon shrugged, “You’re just a year younger, so it’s not that big of a deal. You’ll be graduating in just a few weeks, so I’m sure that might change. If not, maybe you can change it for her.”
That grabbed his attention. “Show her I’m not a kid? How?”
“Well, I think this is a good start. I think if you just show her how mature you really are, she’ll finally realize you’re not a kid anymore.”
Doyoung nodded, “Yeah, that could work. Thanks, Hyung.”
After getting you into Doyoung’s house, the two got you into Doyoung’s bed. “Usually, you’d want to help her hydrate and eat something, but she’s so knocked out,” Byounggon commented as Doyoung removed your shoes for you. “Just make sure she eats when she wakes up, drinks a lot of water, and takes something if she has a headache.”
“Got it. Thanks again for everything, Hyung.”
Byounggon left after that and Doyoung quickly fell asleep on the couch after texting his mom.
****
You woke up feeling totally hungover. At first, you had no idea where you were. When you saw the framed photo of you and Doyoung at your graduation, you knew you were in his room. Shuffling out slowly, you found him in the kitchen. “Good, you’re up,” Doyoung said, stirring the pot of soup. “I was kind of getting worried.”
“What … what happened?” you asked him, sitting down in one of the chairs at the table.
He smiled slightly. “You got drunk at the karaoke place. Byounggon-hyung called me, so I brought you back here.”
You sighed. “I’m guessing I also told you why I was upset.”
Setting down a bowl of soup in front of you, he responded, “Kind of. You didn’t really tell me any details, though.”
“Is this hangover soup?” you asked. He nodded. When you tried it, you were surprised that it was good. “Wow, Doyoung, this is really good. Is it really your first time making it?”
He nodded. “Yeah. I searched a little bit for a good recipe and a lot of people gave it a good rating.”
You smiled. “Well, thank you, Doyoung. That was really sweet of you.”
“So,” he said, sitting down across from you, “want to tell me what happened?”
“I was dating a jerk in disguise, that’s what happened,” you huffed. So, Byounggon had been right. “He dumped me for an older girl. Do you know how shitty that is? We were just sitting there eating dinner and he suddenly confessed he liked her and was dumping me. God, I thought we were both so happy, but I turned out to just be a huge idiot.”
That made Doyoung’s frown deepen. “You’re not an idiot, Noona. He’s the idiot for not realizing he had the best girlfriend ever. Just wait, when things fail with this girl, he’ll come running back to you.”
“Thanks, Doyoung. You really are the best.”
His heart was pounding with anticipation. For what exactly? He wasn’t sure, but it was. After you finished eating, you went to shower and he started cleaning up. “So,” you said, coming out of his room in a pair of his sweatpants and one of his shirts, “how bad was I?”
Looking at you, he smiled. “Honestly? Not that bad,” he confessed. “You were crying when you were singing and then passed out not long after. You didn’t wake up at all when we were taking you home.”
You nodded, glad you weren’t too difficult. “Wait, isn’t it Friday? Why aren’t you in school?”
“Well, because you’re more important. I wanted to be here when you woke up and make you this soup.” He put a lid on the container with the leftover soup.
“And, your mom knows?” you asked.
He shook his head. “No, and I don’t plan on telling her. I mean, every student skips school once, right?”
Nodding, you responded, “Well, yeah, but a high school senior shouldn’t. Plus, they usually go to like an arcade or amusement park and do something fun, not take care of their friend’s hangover.”
“I mean, this isn’t awful for me. I like hanging out with you, Noona,” he said, turning to look at you. “If I were to skip school again, I’d visit you. You’re my best friend, Noona.”
Then, you kissed him. It was dumb and you weren’t in your right mind, but you did it because everything was confusing but he was being so sweet. Doyoung was always sweet. Sure, sometimes he was annoying or infuriating, but he was always sweet when he apologized. When you pulled away, he looked surprised.
“I-I should go,” you said, rushing to his room to put your shoes on and to grab your things.
He followed you, “Noona, wait.”
“No, I really should go. Sorry, Doyoung. Bye.”
Doyoung stared as you shut the front door behind you, feeling very confused himself. Grabbing his phone, he scrolled through his contacts. “Yedam-hyung? Are you free right now?”
♡♡♡♡
You had successfully avoided Doyoung for a couple of weeks. Ever since you kissed him, things had been so weird and confusing. You felt bad for kissing him since you were just heartbroken and vulnerable, but that wasn't his fault. So, why were you avoiding him? Easy, you were afraid you'd develop feelings for him.
Before, you hadn't looked at any other guy because you had a boyfriend. You didn't have a boyfriend anymore, however, so that meant you were free to find another guy. Your heart seemed to want Doyoung, but that felt wrong. He was younger and still in high school.
With all these conflicting thoughts, you ended up avoiding him. Childish? Yes. Worth it? Definitely. It was giving you time to sort your thoughts and get over your ex, which was much easier with how preoccupied your mind was. It wasn't hard avoiding Doyoung, either, except for the days when he'd show up to your apartment.
“Y/N, there you are!” Yedam exclaimed, appearing with Byounggon. “We need your help with a project.”
Your eyebrows furrowed. “I didn't know you guys knew each other,” you confessed. “Since when were you friends?”
“Not that long,” Byounggon told you. “Doyoung introduced us.”
That made sense. “What's the project?”
Yedam said, “Follow us.”
You followed them into the liberal arts building, making small talk with ease. They opened one of the doors and, before you knew it, you were being shoved inside. “What the hell?!” you exclaimed, hearing the lock click behind you. “Yedam! Byounggon-oppa! Let me out!”
“Not until you two talk!” Byounggon exclaimed.
That caught your attention and made your eyebrows. “Huh?”
Looking around, you spotted Doyoung in the room. You hadn't noticed him at first. “Hi, Noona,” Doyoung greeted softly.
You felt your bottom lip quiver slightly, feeling guilty. “What are you doing here, Doyoung?” you asked. He was wearing his uniform still. “Shouldn't you be in school?”
“We weren't doing anything important, so I ditched to come here. You've been avoiding me and I don't like that, Noona.”
All you wanted to do was leave, but Byounggon and Yedam had you locked inside the old classroom. “I'm sorry, Doyoung, but I've just been going through a lot right now. Everything's just so confusing and I need some time.”
“You've had two weeks, Noona! And how do you think I feel?” he asked, looking frustrated. “You kissed me and then ran off without saying anything. I've been trying to talk to you, but you act like you don't see me or wait for me to leave.”
Okay, so he definitely made a good point. He continued, “You always make me feel like a little kid, but you act like this. How is this fair? If you needed time, then you should have said something. Just don't leave me in the dark about these things.”
“I need to leave,” you said, going to the window. You were on the second floor, which wasn't that high up, so the drop wouldn't be too bad. “You're right, Doyoung, about everything, but I still just need some more time.”
Standing up, Doyoung went to the door. “Let her out, guys. She'll hurt herself trying to leave through the window if you don't.”
Byounggon and Yedam unlocked and opened the door. You went over, stopping in front of Doyoung and saying “I'm sorry” before leaving.
“Did it work at all? I thought we weren't letting you guys out until you talked about the kiss,” Yedam said.
Shoving his hands in his pockets, Doyoung responded, “I know, but I didn't want to see her get hurt.”
You heard that. Pushing off the wall you had been hiding behind, you left for real. Why were you so afraid? Sure, your ex was a huge jerk and dumped you for another girl, but Doyoung would never hurt you like that. You knew Doyoung. He was a sweet, funny, and just all around awesome guy. Why couldn't you just admit to yourself that you liked him?
He might not like you, though. He's never said he does, so accepting your feelings and finding out he didn't like you back would be a total blow to your heart. After getting your heart stomped on already, you didn't think you could handle that.
“Y/N!” a voice called out. You whipped your head around, paranoid it was Yedam or Byounggon. Instead, it was your ex, Hojoon. You couldn't tell if you were lucky or unfortunate. “Do you have time to talk?”
You didn't want to. The last thing you wanted to do was talk. All you wanted to do was go home, eat a ton of food while watching TV, and then cry to your mom about everything. But, maybe talking to Hojoon would help clear things up for you and be the step in the right direction to talk to Doyoung.
“Fine,” you finally said. “I'm not giving you that much time.”
The two of you ended up at a small cafe near campus. He ordered your usual for you, a caramel macchiato. He was being nice and it was making you feel weary.
“How have you been?”
You looked up at him from your drink. “I could tell you that I've been just super, but that would be a lie. I've been awful and confused.”
That made him perk up for some reason. “Really?” he asked. Why did he sound so happy? “I'm kind of glad. Breaking up with you was a huge mistake. I was so lost when I dumped you, Y/N.”
Wait, what? “I think you're confused, Hojoon. I'm upset about our breakup, but that's just because you dumped me in a douchey manner,” you explained, watching his smile fall. “I'm confused about something else, not you. Besides, what happened with the girl you left me for?”
“Nothing. She just wasn't looking for something long term.”
Just then, Doyoung entered with his friend, Dohwan. “Hey, isn't that Y/N-noona?” Dohwan questioned. “I thought you said that guy dumped her.”
“He did,” Doyoung told him. “I don't know what the hell they're doing together. I mean, she can talk to the guy who broke her heart but not me?”
Dohwan shrugged, “Maybe it's not like that. Come on, let's sit by them so we can listen in.”
Doyoung really didn't want to, but Dohwan was already going to sit down. Doyoung somehow ended up sitting with his back to your own. “I don't want to get back together, Hojoon,” you said sternly. “You … you broke my heart and …”
“There's another guy?” he questioned, able to fill in the blanks just fine on his own. “Who?”
You began fiddling with your thumbs. “Doyoung.”
Doyoung felt like he stopped breathing and his heart started pounding. “That kid you're friends with? You always told me he was just a friend.”
“He was, but I'm not sure anymore,” you confessed. “Don't call him a kid, either. He may be a year younger than us, but he's still more mature than you. He wouldn't dump his girlfriend just to be with a girl who doesn't even want him.”
That was kind of mean, but he deserved it. “So, he likes you back? You guys are dating or something?” he asked you.
“Well, not exactly. I don't know how he feels about me.”
Hojoon snorted. “So, you won't get back together with me because of some kid who might not even like you?” You stayed quiet. “You think he'll be loyal? Guys his age are like a kid in a candy store; they move on when they see something better.”
Who was he to talk? He did the same exact thing. You opened your mouth to say that but were cut off. “Is anyone really buying this crap?” Dohwan asked, standing up. “Listen, guy, you don't know shit about Doyoung, so keep his name out of your dirty mouth.”
“Dohwan?” you questioned, blinking. “What are you doing here?”
“I'm defending my friend. Did you really date this jerk, Noona?”
Hojoon sighed. “Great, another kid,” he said.
Dohwan looked at him. “Stop acting like you're so high and mighty. You left Noona for some girl who you had sex with and then left you. You're an idiot, dude. You have no girl and are trying to trash talk a guy younger than you. You're such a loser,” he said. “As for Doyoung, he loves Noona. He loves her more than I've ever seen a guy love a girl. If he had her, he wouldn't be an idiot like you and let her go.”
“Okay, you can shut up now,” Doyoung said. You hadn't even noticed him. He was clearly blushing. “At the end of the day, you were a jerk for dumping Noona and now you look like an idiot. Just leave her alone and reevaluate yourself.”
You blinked. “Doyoung…”
He turned to Dohwan, “Come on, let's go.”
♡♡♡♡
Doyoung avoided you the next couple of weeks. You didn't really try to contact him, either, so you weren't upset. After you did the same to him, you felt he had every right to do so. The whole cafe day was so crazy that your head was spinning for three days.
You finally decided to stop avoiding him on his graduation day. He hadn't mentioned anything about it, but you knew he'd be upset if you didn't show up. You thought it would be a nice surprise.
After the ceremony, you waited outside for him. “Doyoung, pose with Dohwan!” his mother exclaimed, making Doyoung chuckle.
The two posed for a photo together. Yedam and Byounggon were there, too. Byounggon noticed you first and gently nudged Doyoung before nodding in your direction. You smiled at Doyoung, waving slightly. “I'll be right back,” he said, passing his things to Byounggon.
“Hi,” you greeted him softly. “Congratulations, Doyounggie.”
You passed him the candy bouquet you made for him. After seeing photos on the internet last year, he said he wanted one and you promised you'd make one for him. “Thanks, Noona. I love it.”
“I hate this, Doyoung. I hate us not talking.”
“Do you think I love it? I've been losing my mind, Noona,” he said. “I've wanted to call you every day.”
Your eyebrows furrowed, “Then why didn't you?”
“Because I wanted you to call me, Noona! Gosh, I was trying to play hard to get, but you clearly didn't understand.”
That made you blush. “Oh, I didn't know that's why you weren't talking to me.”
He laughed, “I'm not surprised, honestly. Still, I'm really glad you came today.”
“Are you kidding me? I wouldn't have missed it for the world!” you exclaimed. Then, you smiled a somber smile. “I'm really sorry about everything, Doyoung.”
Shaking his head, he said, “Let's talk about it later, Noona.”
“Are you guys friends again?” his mom asked, making you both blush. “Come celebrate with us, Y/N. You need some meat on those bones if you're marrying my son.”
You knew it was a joke but didn't know how much of it was. She grabbed your hand and led the way.
At the barbecue place, you were all laughing and talking when Doyoung's mom’s phone started ringing. She let out a sigh and rolled her eyes when she read the contact. “It's your aunt. I'm sure she'll want to talk my ear off, so I'll be an hour or so. Tell your father if he gets here before I'm done,” she said, walking out of the restaurant.
“Wow, what a mood,” Yedam said, making you guys laugh. “But, let's get down to business. Are you guys dating?”
You choked on your water. “Geez, Hyung, you're gonna kill her,” Dohwan said, gently rubbing your back as you coughed.
“We haven't talked about us yet,” Doyoung confessed.
Byounggon chortled, “What's there to talk about? Y/N likes Doyoung and Doyoung likes Y/N.”
“Yeah, I think plenty of people know after Dohwan announced it in that cafe,” Yedam laughed.
“It's not like we can just start dating,” Doyoung told them. “Noona was upset over her breakup, so her feelings might have just gotten all messed up.”
You shook your head. “No, I like you, Doyoung,” you said bluntly, making him blush and his heart skip a beat. “I was confused and I avoided you because I didn't want you to just be a rebound. That wouldn't have been fair to you. But, I do like you and it's not just because Hojoon dumped me.”
That made Doyoung smile and the other boys tease him. “I like you too, Noona. Everything Dohwan said in the cafe was true. You're so important to me and I would never hurt you. You're my best friend.”
“I'm gonna cry,” Byounggon joked, wiping away fake tears.
“So, this means you guys are dating?” Dohwan asked.
Doyoung looked at you and you nodded, making him smile again. You always made him smile. “Okay, I'm back!” his mother exclaimed. “She had to leave for a game of Go-Stop, luckily for me. What did I miss?”
“Y/N and Doyoung are dating!” Yedam exclaimed.
“Hyung!” Doyoung whined.
His mother smiled. “Well, it's about time! I was wondering when it would happen,” she said. “Doyoung's bottled up his feelings for far too long.”
Doyoung blinked, “Wait, you knew?”
“Of course! I read those diary entries about her!”
His face went red. “Mom! It wasn't a diary!”
“How cute! Doyoung wrote about Y/N in his diary!” Byounggon teased.
You giggled, grabbing Doyoung's hand as everyone loudly teased him. “It's okay, I think it's cute,” you whispered in his ear, making him feel better. If you thought it was cute, he'd write a million more entries.
“I almost forgot!” his mother exclaimed, pulling out her camera. “I need to take a photo of you two!”
Scooting closer to Doyoung, you posed for the photo. “Noona,” he said.
You turned to look at him and then he placed his lips on yours for a quick kiss. His mother snapped the photo. Doyoung pulled away, smiling at your flustered face. The other boys smiled as did his mother. “Oh, this is definitely going on the Christmas cards.”
