Throwback Thursday #58!- Dressy Bessy- Pink Hearts Yellow Moons (1999- Kindercore)
Tumblr media
Though this long-running Denver indie rock outfit, led by longtime couple vocalist/guitarist Tammie Ealom and guitarist John Hill (who had been in the Apples in Stereo) are still at it releasing records, this debut long-player from 1999, is still my favorite by them. The band formed in 1996 and had a few singles before this debut LP appeared. So Ealom, Hill along with the rhythm section of Darren Albert and Rob Greene (who sadly passed away a few years back) crafted a terrific little debut record here!
With 11 songs clocking in at just under 30 minutes the songs are a sugar rush of fuzzed-out guitars, bouncy rhythms, and hooks a plenty. Cuts like the choppy, fun “Lookaround,”  the Briggs & Stratton guitar of the great “Little TV,” the psych bounce of “Jenny Come On,” and the Kinks-ish “Extra-Ordinary” are just a few of the corkers on here. You want more? Don’t miss other ones like “Big Vacation” or “I Found Out.”
The record is just simply a blast from start to finish and every self-respecting indie popster truly needs to have this one in their collection.

MELANIE MARTINEZ - "EVIL"
youtube
We just couldn't help ourselves: Amnesty 2k23 is continuing for a few extra days before wrapping up for good. First, Micha asks us to revisit an artist we last covered eight years ago...
[3.75]
Ian Mathers: Whenever we cover someone on the Jukebox I'm not already familiar with, I wind up looking up what I can about the artist/album/song, just for my own edification. In this case, between having a Wikipedia page with a "Sexual assault allegation" subheading, the language I saw her fans using to defend her/defuse said allegations on reddit, and reading the lyrics to "Evil" afterwards... well, I got the ick. (For the record: the genders and identities of the relevant people do not exacerbate or mitigate any of the accusations for me, and even if I grant for the sake of argument the most steel-manned version of Martinez's defenses, even if her accuser was every bad thing claimed here or else, that still does not eliminate the ick or make me like the song.) And seeing as how I am not a court of law and I can neither punish Martinez in any way nor do I have any desire to do so, having the ick does not need to meet any further burden of proof for me to say I don't particularly want to hear this one again. [4]
Nortey Dowuona: Maybe you shouldn't make a song about how someone is calling you evil when you abuse your friend's love and trust and can only say they didn't tell you that is what you did. That IS evil. [0]
Taylor Alatorre: Thank you, Melanie Martinez, for deciding to stop making kindercore concept albums with song titles like "Sippy Cup" and "Lunchbox Friends," so I can listen to your stuff without feeling like I'd be aiming a flamethrower at my eternal soul. "Evil" is still rooted in the rococo fantasy impulses that have animated Martinez's career -- there's a stock sound effect of an egg being cracked -- but it puts them to more workmanlike ends, crafting a realistically spiteful break-up narrative that's upsetting within the song's moral universe but not viscerally so in ours. That straight-outta-Guyville guitar chug, steady and reliable as ever, helps ground the spritely vocal theatrics in something tangible, and the decision to let the chorus marinate for a few extra bars was a bold yet correct one. I'm probably grading on a curve due to low expectations, and judging from the Alex Garland-meets-Tim Burton aesthetics, I assume the rest of the album is nothing like this. But still: "tears of oxalate"? That's one of the most genuinely grunge-sounding lyrics this side of No Code. [8]
Michael Hong: She snarls and fills the whole thing with cool details (the sound of an egg cracking when she sings, "wanna see the yolk"). Neat moves until the muffled framing lifts, the realization that she's not the victim of this story, but the girl who once wrote a diss track against someone who leveled accusations of sexual abuse against her. [0]
Frank Kogan: Interesting vocal, halfway between cute and smoky. [4]
Alfred Soto: The professionalism of its structure -- the hooks go boom-boom -- doesn't endear to me this honing of angst and decent rhymes. [4]
Tara Hillegeist: This wouldn't have been out of place on Everything Is Embarrassing, which does about track for where Martinez's general inspirations draw from, compared to her contemporaries; she's still about two decades out of date, only now she's grown out of her kinderwhore-but-make-it-more-coquette era and settling herself solidly in A&Rechtshai'd also-ran wonderland. To be clear -- there's nothing that is unappealing about that steady grunge-fuzzed bass lick keeping the song grinding along beneath its childish piano twinkling and vocals that sound like they were sung into enough sheets of gauze to cover Martinez' signature squeaky pitch, with more sheets layered on the squeakier her voice threatens to get. And the lyrics are some of the strongest I've seen from her yet; certainly, her target demo could do worse for a self-liberation anthem than a singalong that proves this catchy and caustic beneath the sandpaper faux-distress sonically draped over every word -- better this than, say, "Alice Practice", almost certainly, yes? But I still feel like something's missing, here, and I wonder what it says about myself and Martinez alike that the best way I can think to articulate that lack is, indeed, to ask all over again, if wincing for different reasons this time than the last: what if she just -- acted her age, for once? [5]
Will Adams: Because I refuse to stop melting my brain on Twitter, I log on daily and am continuously confronted with the fact that Melanie Martinez has many, many fans. Specifically, Stan Twitter, who regularly include her in prompt tweets like "WHICH POP GIRL IS TAKING IT IN 2023" or "YOU HAVE $15. WHAT ARE YOU BUYING" alongside everyone from Lana and Taylor to Charli and Carly. Having only ever heard approximately 1.5 songs of hers, my reaction is always, "is she really that special?" Listening to "Evil," I hear the appeal: "Kill Bill" cuteness over scuzzy indie pop. I still don't hear the special. [3]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: An innovative, path-breaking exercise at the intersection of Yeule and Disney Channel Original Movie Soundtracks. [5]
Katherine St Asaph: This is such a crowded genre, there's no reason to listen to songs this plodding by people this shitty. [1]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: The plinking piano doesn't set itself up against the rest of the instrumentation to provide the necessary contrast: her knowing devilishness just comes off poorly rehearsed. The schoolyard chant of a chorus doesn't help. [4]
Micha Cavaseno: Me, the late Prodigy, and Melanie Martinez all have at one point hailed from the greater Hempstead/Queens area and similarly have a miserable personality. Now, while I am not shooting up Demerol in order to function, nor have I had any issues with sexual assault allegations (P and M, respectively, for those who don't know), I too suffer from a sort of paranoia and gothic mistrust around the world around me; gothic in the general instability and unreliable nature... and y'know, overbearing maudlin evil spooky shit. Which is why I have always had time for how "cringe" Martinez's music has read for people with her kinderwhore one-trick pony provocations. I don't mind the Hot Topic narcissism and edgelord tendencies because at the end of the day, it's a reminder of how easy it is to believe in truth as victimhood. "See the horns on my head they're from goddesses; On God." is easily my favorite non-rap lyric this year to overanalyze because it's a perfect synthesis of New York ethnic AAVE blended in with faux-feminist self-appointed martyrdom in an alt-rock style. The witches you could not burn wearing fishnets and Timbs, but without any of the seams from such a wave of clichés showing. But whereas Prodigy's foes were the great peril of fake MCs and/or fake thugs, Martinez's foe are her own fans. She already demonstrated her obsession with this on the APPALLINGLY BAD K-12 record, one of the worst artistic expressions about "cancel culture" you could ever ask for and a distasteful response to accountability. "Evil" (and most of Portals) is better for avoiding jeering in favor of defiance, yet it still makes me incredibly sad that all Martinez wants to do (like so many people in the world) is see snakes and betrayal, and those who would tear her down and live life in hopeless nihilistic rebellion in any direction. I remember craving that sense of power to mask for my own senses of guilt and cowardice, and how worthless that feels after you've had to live on it for so long that it's all that defines you. Maybe there isn't a world without armor and thorns, but I wish to God I knew people dreamed about it anymore. It made being unable to believe feel less painful. [7]

Article about Marshmallow Coast in Flagpole, 8 December 2004
[source]
transcript:
Friday, December 10 Marshmallow Coast, Foxy Rock-It Nuçi’s Space
‘Andy Gonzales has been a steadily participating member of the Athens music community for at least the past five years; as a member of Music Tapes and Of Montreal he contributed strong melodic songcraft and instrumental versatility. It’s with Marshmallow Coast, however, that Gonzales has established himself as more than just a session player or backing band member. The Colorado native has captained this particular ship since the mid ‘90s, with local record company Kindercore releasing two Marshmallow Coast albums (the 1999 sophomore album Seniors & Juniors and 2000's Marshmallow Coasting). Gonzales’ earlier albums showed a lot of promise, with songs that flirted with psychedelic accoutrements but never lost sight of a to-the-point melody.
In November of 2003, Gonzales released Antistar, the fifth Marshmallow Coast album, on the Texas-based label Misra. His strongest work to date, Antistar is a solid yet airy collection of piano- and guitar-pop tunes that veer away from the rock trappings of earlier albums. There's a direct line connecting Marshmallow Coast and Burt Bacharach, and Gonzales is tapping it for all it’s worth.
Tonight’s show at Nuçi’s Space is part of the resource center's “Holiday Hooplah,” which is turning out to be a musical review of sorts; also performing tonight is Foxy Rock-It, a conglomerate band of local scene regulars. Mary Sigalas, Jenny Culler, Amy Bramblett, Brett Huckabee, Ballard Lesemann and Joel Byron will perform songs of their own, as well as providing accompaniment for local songwriters JoJo Glidewell, Jamie Cook, Neal Fountain and Wilma Pittard. “It’s sort of a winter stew,” says Sigalas. All proceeds from tonight’s 8 p.m. show go to the fund Nuçi’s Space uses to help promote mental health in the music community. [Chris Hassiotis]

Japancakes’ sixth full-length album is a cover tributary to Loveless, yes, but one recorded after two whole waves of post-rock had crested and fallen, as a third was well underway. absent the harsh distortion of shoegaze, we're left with the indie rock equivalent to easy listening: slow-to-midtempo instrumentals with shimmer-swirling dream pop guitars and keyboards, augmented by upswelling chamber pop instrumentation (cf. Sigur Rós). also present throughout is a distinctly Southern alt-country flair, owed in large part to the strong presence of pedal steel alongside the cello and electric guitar.
the melodic, sleepy sound of this rock-a-bye–ambient pop suite is a pleasant listen, not quite on par with the original but definitely close. I'm not too surprised, but m.b.v.'s colossal oceanic guitar-rock seems to be well-suited to this softer, more conventionally textured approach that emphasizes acoustic instrumentation and splashes of bright, clean, spaced-out electric guitar. consequently this cover provides a more Beautiful experience geared towards background listening, but with enough depth in its atmosphere, arrangements, and overall sonic palette to merit a closer listen.
I'm very glad both versions exist, and hearing this one allowed me to go back and hear the original anew, discovering and rediscovering elements in its more unconventional, harder-to-(parse? pierce?) textures. I haven't heard the rest of Japancakes's discography yet, but this album and the fact that they're both Kindercore kids and Darla darlings has definitely put them on my list of artists to look further into.

i propose that the e6 music genre be expanded to include bands that were not apart of the elephant 6 collective but either 1. WERE under labels associated with e6 acts and 2. sound like they would fit in with the e6 'sound' (3. not required but also if the band is from athens, ga thats bonus points). that way finding more e6-sounding music would be easier and would be more inclusive of obscurer and newer bands. i havent heard nearly as many bands as i'd like to fully fill out my "E6 Expanded Universe Catalogue" (as i've dubbed it) quite yet, but basically it would include some bands from the record labels Orange Twin, Bar/None, Kindercore, and Low Transit Industries, maybe more that i cant remember too. also look i made a chart of some of the few bands i HAVE heard, and where they would fall on the Elephant 6 pH scale :-]

Article about Marshmallow Coast and interview with Andy Gonzales in Flagpole, 14 April 2004
[source]
transcript:
The Reluctance of being earnest Marshmallow Coast's Andy Gonzales moves towards a sharper picture of himself Andy Gonzales is looking to define himself, and he's been doing it for a while. To be more specific, he's looking to have his Marshmallow Coast identity and music exist outside the realm of his more acclaimed association. In fact, when I call to ask him about the recording of his recent album Antistar, he brings up Of Montreal right off the bat and without any prompting.
"We recorded [Antistar] with Jason NeSmith at Bel Air Studios," says Gonzales, "and it basically... well. I felt like I needed to record an album completely disassociated from Of Montreal. All the [Of Montreal] reviews would mention Kevin [Barnes, Of Montreal's primary songwriter and frontman] and not mention me.
That was pretty much my only thing to consider in the recording of this album, so I didn't want to include any of those people. That just got under my skin after a while—not that it created hard feelings, of course, but it was time to really be on my own."
Don't let Gonzales come across as bitter— he's not. But he does carry the air of someone frustrated with being overshadowed. Antistar, however, should aid in further separating Marshmallow Coast from Of Montreal's quirky pop preciousness. The album is Gonzales' fourth as Marshmallow Coast, a name he's used since his early teenage years in Denver. It's also his most distinct album to date. Marshmallow Coast's 1999 debut album Seniors and Juniors came across like an off-key and lo- fi love letter to Music Tapes' Julian Koster (also of Neutral Milk Hotel), and 2000's Marshmailow Coasting carried a strong Of Montreal sound— not surprising, since the majority of that band showed up to back Gonzales.
But with 2002's Ride the Lightning, which marked the jump from Kindercore Records to Misra Records, Gonzales started to gain his own foothold. Of the label switch, Gonzales says: "Kindercore was totally changing, and I kinda had a weird inkling that I needed to leave, but it wasn't anything other than I needed to be on a different label than Of Montreal, because that was the height of the comparison."
Antistar finds Gonzales exploring his troubadour side, turning away the more psychedelic whimsy experiments of earlier albums, instead relying on tunes more in line with the steady output of standards coming from Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello, albeit with a Sean Lennon voice and a Jonathan Richman sense of humor. Love songs—romantic love songs populate Antistar. Says Gonzales: "Everybody feels love, and I just... more than being lovey-dovey, I try to make my songs about weirdoes who find love mysteriously. I think it's more classy to write about love, and I definitely don't have anything political to say." The album was recorded primarily in the solo setting, and Marshmallow Coast's live performance reflects that; it's Gonzales and wife Sara Kirkpatrick, who married recently in Dekalb County, accompanied by a CD for all the backing tracks and drums.
"My songwriting process has kind of evolved," says Gonzales. "It used to be that I'd just wait for inspiration, but eventually I'd just work on little bits and pieces and see how they fit together over time. Now I'm at the point where I can get my brain into writing mode when I'm in the studio recording—I might go in with just six songs, and that's not enough for a full album, so I'll write some out of sheer necessity. Some of those songs have become some of my favorites, because I'm not super-prolific like some other people are. If I tell myself I've got something to accomplish and I'm not wasting somebody's time, I can get things done. But it can be difficult."
Again, Gonzales slips comfortably into self-doubt an apologetic tone for even existing in the first place. He seems uncomfortable with his own place in the creation of music. To wit:
Andy Gonzales: By this point I just [write songs] and we don't really feel like we'll change the world or anything. Flagpole: No? AG: Not really. Sometimes I don't know why I do it. I think about all the other hundreds of bands who recorded their CDs and spent all that money in the studio and... I dunno. I guess there is a reason. FP: What is that reason? AG: Because I like doing music, and there are some people who seem to like it I mean, I totally love making music, but I've given up the romantic notion I held as a teenager that we're gonna be big or something. But there's somebody willing to put the record out, so I'll definitely have the songs ready, I guess... I mean, I would love for us to get recognition as a unique or different band, but I am happy with the recognition we've got so far.
But again, it seems to be the constant scrutiny and comparison to his musical elders that's led to Gonzales' reticence and his reluctance to take a strong stand on his own music. "The weird thing is," he says, "I've had the luxury to turn into something while people were able to watch and scrutinize. Most people might not put out their first album until they're my age now, until they've really developed as an artist and are ready to be out there. I've kind of been developing in the public eye."
Is that ever an uncomfortable situation? "I think it was in the beginning," says Gonzales, "because I'm not a very good singer, but now I think... I don't know how much consideration I give it anymore. I just want to make something really, um, pretty? Y'know, just music that's nice. I feel that if I evolve in any other way I'll try to get somebody else to sing because that's where I run into the most criticism."
But does Gonzales like his own voice? "Yeah. Sometimes? I don't know." It seems that Gonzales' strength, then, is to let the songs speak for themselves as well as for him. Despite his self-questioning, Antistar takes a strong stand towards romance and pushes Gonzales further towards definition.
