“Look at me - just breathe, okay?” + Daiken, please!
yay!! suffering!!
“Look at me- just breathe, okay...? Breathe...”
This is an odd situation.
That’s the only coherent thought that Ken can come up with right now, everything else is a garbled mess and he’s crying, crying and he can’t stop and Motomiya is consoling him now and he doesn’t understand why, they were enemies barely a week ago, how can he-
He’s being hugged. Being swallowed up by Motomiya’s hoodie, arms wrap around him and his comforter’s words are drowning in cotton, and in spite of all logic and reason he’s hugging back.
“It’s ok, Ichijouji, everything is going to be ok, I promise! I bet those people in the car will be perfectly fine, just you wait.”
Despite this strange, strange boy’s best efforts, Ken’s breathing hitches and he starts hyperventilating. Sirens, sirens, sirens, Niisan, sirens, all his fault, all his fault, all his fault all his faultallhisfaultallhisfault-
No more sirens. His ears are warm. Hands are covering them up and he can’t hear a thing.
His mind is nowhere near a state to be questioning things anymore. And so he doesn’t, he just cries and cries for what feels like an eternity, letting the rest of the world be blocked out for him.
And after a length of time he couldn’t hope to guess, he’s hearing things again. And being hugged again.
“There, there...” Hands smooth down his hair, and it feels strange and alien. “It’s ok now...”
“Wh-why are you being so nice to me...?” He whispers.
“...ah, I just can’t stand seeing people cry.”
What a kind thing to hate.
His former opponent grins at him like nothing weird or unpleasant just happened, and maybe for him it didn’t. “You ok now?”
“...yes...th-thank you...” There’s a part of him that screams at having shown such weakness and vulnerability to another person, mostly because it’s trying to avoid thinking about the fact that someone was genuinely nice to him.
Motomiya offers him a hand, and hoists him to his feet. Ken stands awkward, silent, not knowing what to say.
“Well, have a nice day! See you around!” Motomiya gives an unaffected grin before turning to leave. Ken is so baffled he can’t bring himself to respond.
Strange, strange, Motomiya. He’d laugh if he wasn’t still teetering on the verge of despair.
He sighs instead and turns his back to walk home. He knows he needs to do a better job of saying thank you, but Motomiya doesn’t seem to care, so he’ll save it for when he’s...less emotional.
Until then, he’s going to bury himself in blankets and try to forget this day happened.
Or remember what that hug felt like.

6! :)
I really love writing about friendships. I love romance, but I think that I’ve written more friendship stories for my otps! Friendship is my favorite crest, after all.
My writing is most personal when I write about how difficult it is for shy people to express themselves, or about the difficulty of communicating feelings in general. A lot of my writing is therapeutic that way. What You Think of Me is probably my most personal story, even though I think that my writing has improved since then. The King and His Knight is a more recent example.
Angst and comedies both come with their own challenges but I love writing both! I try to mix them up to be balanced. I feel happy when I get reviews from people who like that about my writing.
Thanks for the question!

@kindnessemitsagoldenlight Yeah I thought of the 'oh this is probably just an add' thing after posting, although I doubt people would assume the same when the Digimon appeared on their pc screen while working x)
And even supposing people assume mass hallucination for the mountains in the sky, there has to be some people who are bound to want to know where that came from, right?
Although now that I think of it, the movie came out *before* it became common place is to mistrust your government (at least in the West, other countries are beyond my knowledge) so I suppose people would be more easily placated. Mmmh.

I just wanna give a thank-you shout out to @mosokisa, @kindnessemitsagoldenlight, and @secretproblemsihave for your nice, thoughtful comments on my emo writing-frustration post.  I wish Tumblr had a more direct way to reply to ‘replies’ on posts, but alas, this will have to do.

[No.13 - confusion]
Headcanon - there is a great deal of confusion among many of the chosen’s parents, over the fact that many of them refuse to explain where various, bizarre scars, injuries and the like all came from.
Taichi has countless shallow scars from when he held out against Piedmon, waiting for Yamato. As well as a million cuts a bruises that cropped up from classic Taichi-being-Taichi.
Yamato has a gash on his forehead. He doesn’t actually remember how it got there. Other than that, he’s fine. Takeru came home far more banged up than him. He tries not to make it obvious that it bothers him.
Mimi was always very easily hurt. By the end of their first adventure, she had so many bruises and scraps that she could barely touch anything without something or other hurting. Although they all eventually disappeared, she still only likes surface level physical contact.
Jou’s lungs were incredibly damaged by having almost drowned, and he ends up having tons of breathing problems because of it. With his newly fucked over immune system, Jou ends up getting pneumonia at one point. Taichi nearly has a heart attack when he finds out.
While his parents certainly do know where it’s from, one could also note that Daisuke has a deep burn in one particular spot on his back. He doesn’t really remember the incident himself, outside from a lot of pain and screaming. He just knows he can’t feel anything that touches the burned area.
Speaking of burns.
Although they most certainly aren’t as deep as the one on Daisuke’s back, every one of the 02 kids’ have small, light acid burns somewhere or other. Every one of their partner’s bubbles (and by extension, saliva) has some level of acidity, ranging from “tingles a little” to “oh god it burns”, with Poyomon being the worst of the lot.
Iori and Miyako have a few gashes, but nothing to really tell the grandkids about.
The whip mark stayed on Takeru for a week or two. He asked Hikari to let him borrow her makeup so that Yamato wouldn’t fuss over him.
Ken has some damn awful neck pain. He’d go to acupuncture or something, but he doesn’t want to worry his parents. He’ll deal with it when he moves out, if it’s still a problem by then.

14, digimon - I KNOW I'm going to like it :D
[Send me a number prompt and I’ll write a drabble]
#14 “We’re in love with the same person. Friendships have been built on less common ground.”
1,300 words, under the cut
Miyako’s plan had seemed perfect at the time. Make chocolates for Ken, go to Tamachi after school the day before Valentine’s, drop the chocolates off in his shoe locker. Ken would’ve already gone home. Anyone still in the school would be working or doing club activities. She could get in and out undetected.
But what she hadn’t expected was to turn into Ken’s row, and find Daisuke. Holding a red and pink box in his hands. Putting that box into Ken’s locker
.It was so entirely unexpected that she ended up dropping her own box. Which had the effect of causing Daisuke to notice her.
The second Daisuke made eye contact with her, she snapped out of her stupor and took off running. She didn’t stop until she was on the train back home. She also didn’t realize that she’d abandoned her homemade chocolates, either. It was disappointing to think that all her effort would go to waste, but there was no way in hell she was going back for them now.
She’s lying in bed about an hour later, contemplating what the hell she should do, when her sister yells that she has a guest. She hopes to god that it’s not Daisuke. A few seconds later, there’s a knock on her bedroom door.
“Miyako? Can I come in?” It’s Daisuke.
She doesn’t answer, hoping maybe by some miracle he’ll go away. She should’ve expected that he’d barge into her room without waiting for an answer anyways.
“What do you want.” She snaps, not bothering up to get up and actually look at her visitor.
“Well, I thought you’d be worried about your chocolates. I don’t know when you noticed that you dropped them, so I figured I’d just tell you that I put them in Ken’s locker for you.” He says nonchalantly.
That gets Miyako’s attention. She sits up and stares at him.
“You…put them in Ken’s locker?” She asks in disbelief.
“Yeah, they were for Ken, weren’t they? I mean, his name was on them.” Daisuke says almost nervously. What the heck?
“I mean yeah, but…weren’t those chocolates that you had for Ken too?” She asks dumbly.
“Yup!” Daisuke responds cheerfully.
“So you…have a crush on Ken?” Miyako continues.
“Yup!” Daisuke says again.
“…Do you not get that the reason I was giving him chocolates was because I like him too?” Miyako questions. She doubts that Daisuke could possibly be that dumb, but it’s the only thing she can think of to explain Daisuke’s behavior.
“What? Of course I understood that! How dumb do you think I am?” Daisuke cries indignantly.
“Trust me, Daisuke. You don’t want to know.” She replies. Daisuke moans and dejectedly flops face first onto her bed, whining into the sheets. Miyako rolls her eyes and laughs at him. But then she remembers how weird he’s being and stops.
“…So you…aren’t upset that I like Ken?” She asks, still dumbfounded. Daisuke looks up at her with pure confusion on his face.
“Why would I be upset? You’re weird, Miyako.” He says decidedly.
“Weird? You’re the one who’s being weird! You seriously don’t hate me now or anything!?” She shouts disbelievingly.
Daisuke looks even more confused.“Why would I hate you!?” He cries, sounding incredibly distressed.
“Because…because!” Miyako stumbles, trying to come up with what should’ve been an obvious answer. “This makes us like…love rivals now, or something.” Is what she eventually comes up with. Daisuke stares at her slack jawed for a few seconds before abruptly bursting into laughter.
“What!? W-what’s so funny!?” Miyako stutters in embarrassment.
“Oh my god that’s so stupid!” He chuckles.
“No it’s not!” Miyako retorts weakly. He bursts out laughing even harder.
“Yes it is! You think I’d hate you for being in love with Ken!? What kind of sense does that make!? I’m in love with him too, weirdo!” Daisuke mocks.
“And that makes us like, in competition or something, right!? Aren’t you upset about that at all!?” She yells.
“God no! You’re like, the one person I’d want to be competing with!” Daisuke says with a big dopey grin on his face. Miyako finds herself even more confused.
 “…What? Why?” She asks dumbly.
“Why wouldn’t I want you as my rival? Even if I lose, my best friend is going to have someone great as his girlfriend, so I’ll still be happy! That’s like, the best possible thing!”
“You…wouldn’t be mad at me for stealing him from you or something?” Miyako asks hesitantly.
“Pfffffttahahaha! No way, that’s dumb! If he likes you, then he likes you, that’s not stealing him from me. Sure, I’d be sad, but I’m not going to go around blaming you for making yourself happy! I’m not 11 anymore, jeez. I’m capable of growing up, y’know…” He says, jokingly pretending to be offended.
“So you’re not going to be mad if I end up with Ken?”
“Nope! The only way you’re going to make me mad is if you win and then you break his heart. And if that happens then I think that as his best friend, I’m legally allowed to murder you.”
“I’ll keep that in mind then.”
“So, you think I’m great?” She asks out of the blue one day. She doesn’t know why she hadn’t thought about it at the time, but now that she thinks about it that’s actually kind of weird.
“Yeah! I mean, you are kinda mean sometimes, but I probably deserve at least some of that…But you’re like, super smart and confident and cool and stuff! You’re totally great!” He declares.
“Gee, thanks!” She laughs.
“…And for what it’s worth, I think you’re pretty great too.”
“So Ken, are you into any girls?” Daisuke pries in the middles of a group picnic. Ken’s face goes red and he buries his head in his knees.
“Oh, there totally is, isn’t there? Do we know her? Is it one of us? Miyako?” Daisuke asks, jokingly poking at him. Miyako tries to wrap her head around what the heck Daisuke is trying to pull as Ken attempts to sink into the ground. But she’s not one to miss an opportunity.
“What’cha hiding your face for, Kenny? Is my beauty just to much for you to handle?” She asks, striking a pose and getting a glare.
“You wound me, Ken!” She laughs. “What, you don’t think I’m pretty?”
“I-It’s not like that! Don’t put words in my mouth, Miyako!” Ken says in distress.
“Then what’s up? Oh, oh, could it be that it’s a guuuuy?” She asks, getting a small, overjoyed thumbs up from Daisuke.
“W-what!?” Ken sputters as he turns into bright red tomato.
“Oh, I totally hit the jackpot, didn’t I?” She says as a gigantic grin grows on her face. For some reason the prospect doesn’t break her heart at all. Weird.
“Shut up Miyako! Don’t make fun of me!” Ken snaps suddenly. He’s clearly just embarrassed, but Miyako can’t help but notice that Daisuke looks kind of shaken.
“He didn’t mean it like that, Daisuke. He was just flustered.” She assures him later.
“You don’t know that…” He mutters.
“Nope! I don’t! But you don’t know that I’m not right, either! Stop sulking, it doesn’t suit you!” She says, grabbing him by the chin and forcing him to look up.
“And besides, you aren’t allowed to just give up! That would be the most disappointing way to win ever!”
“How did you learn how to paint nails so well?”
“Jun taught me.”
“That’s a miracle if I’ve ever heard of one.”
“Oh shush. Now hold still and tell me how that plan of yours went.”
“He didn’t notice even a little bit. God, we fell in love with an idiot.”
“We sure did.”
“It’s so weird that we’re friends because of this, y’know? This is like, the exact opposite of what tv always said would happen.”
“We’re in love with the same person. Friendships have been built on less common ground.”

34, Iori and Daisuke
[BrOTP ask meme]
34 -  “I think I’m dying.” “Tell me you’re being dramatic, please”
3,000 words
Iori really doesn’’t understand why Daisuke had all but demanded that they pair up, but he really wishes that he hadn’t.
Iori knows how to talk to Takeru. He knows how to talk to Miyako.
He doesn’t even have the first beginnings of an idea on how to talk to Daisuke.
He does know how to do maintenance on some broken buildings, and how to tell Digmon to aim a bit higher, so he tries his best to focus on those things instead of the awkwardness of not knowing how to make any kind of small talk.
Daisuke tries his best to do the opposite, and fails about as much as is humanly possible. Iori thinks that he might lose his mind if Daisuke asks him how he’s feeling one more time.
It’s painfully clear that Daisuke had a reason to pair up with him, and is struggling to articulate it. What that reason could be, he hasn’t the slightest clue. He instead tries his hardest to just focus on the task at hand.
The Flymon shows up from practically out of nowhere, and Iori is taken too off guard to move away from the oncoming attack.
So it’s incredibly strange when he finds himself flying backwards onto the ground. And even stranger when the crash reveals that something is behind his back, and wrapping around him. There’s a massive weight on his chest and he looks down, only to get a face full of white fluff. He hears a straggled gasp of pain right next to his ear, and with that it clicks that Daisuke is holding onto him.
The world is still spinning as Daisuke gives a pained yell for their digimon’s help, and Iori struggles to put his brain back into gear. He needs to focus, now. What’s happening, where’s the enemy? What’s-
What’s sticking out of Daisuke’s back?
The world crashes down and narrows to that. The sound of Digmon’s “Are you ok?” is fuzzy white noise as he stares at a bloody stinger sticking out of Daisuke’s back. The sound of Daisuke’s shallow breathing sounds like thunder over the sound of the fight starting above them.
“Daisuke…?” He squeaks, unable to manage anything other than that.
“Hey, hey…I’m ok, don’t freak out, I’m fine.” Daisuke says as he pushes himself up onto violently shaking arms. The position lasts for little over a second before he crashes on top of Iori again. His body goes into a spasm before stopping entirely. Iori almost screams before a gasp signals that Daisuke is not in fact dead.
“I…can’t move…my…body.” Daisuke rasps out through gritted teeth.
Paralysis. A Flymon’s stinger is coated in a poison that causes paralysis.
Iori’s mind goes into maximum panic mode, thinking of every most horrible outcome it possibly can as he slowly tries to get himself out from under Daisuke somehow without accidentally hurting him further. Every little what if. What if they can’t make it to anyone? Can the paralysis kill him? Could it put him into a coma? What can it do? What can Iori do?
He knows nothing about first aid, he’s useless, what if Daisuke needs immediate medical attention and he dies because Iori didn’t know what to do? What if he lives but the damage is permanent? What if-
“Hey…Get that…scary look off your face. It…doesn’t suit you.” Daisuke tells him quietly. A horribly shakey hand makes it about a millimeter in Iori’s direction before losing movement again.
With those flimsy words, Iori manages to calm himself. Ok. He can’t freak out right now. Daisuke needs him. He can’t mess up. Daisuke is counting on him. Everyone who needs Daisuke to come home safe is counting on him. He can’t mess this up.
Where does he…start? You…aren’t supposed to take the object out of the wound but…it’s poisonous, so that’s probably different, right? He should get it out so that there’s as little poison as possible. He needs a bandage…
“Daisuke! Iori!” calls Exveemon from above. Iori snap out of his train of thought and looks up to see…a lot more Flymon than before.
“It’s getting dangerous! You guys need to bolt!” Digmon yells, before disappearing from sight behind three Flymon. Iori doesn’t think about it. He hauls Daisuke up the best he can and starts moving. He makes it about five meters before Daisuke pukes.
It’s not without a little bit of guilt that Iori’s first thought is “Gross.” His friend and leader is in grave danger, this isn’t the time to be worrying about stupid crap like being grossed out.
Though part of him really, really wishes that Daisuke had picked someone a bit bigger to pair up with today.
A buzzing sound that should’ve been getting quieter is suddenly very close and very clear. Iori looks up to see that a Flymon is swooping down directly at them.
With no other option, he pulls Daisuke down onto the ground. They’re barely missed.
Cover, they need to get to cover. Now.
Iori’s eyes fall on the unstable, collapsing building they’ve been struggling with all day. It’s the only thing close enough. He doesn’t have a choice.
He gives Daisuke an apology as he starts dragging him across the ground towards the building. He doesn’t get an answer.
The Flymon comes down again, this time shaky and unstable from a newly melted wing. Thanks, Exveemon. With the added margin of error, Iori is able to get Daisuke onto the ground a bit less painfully. Though it might not even matter, as his leader isn’t responding anymore. The Flymon grazes past them by far too short a distance and falls onto the ground. It immediately starts trying to get up again and Iori does the same, scrambling to his feet and dragging Daisuke the rest of the way into the building.
The entire infrastructure shakes not two seconds after their entrance, just to make sure Iori knows that this isn’t a good idea and they’re not safe at all. He shoves his feeling of impending doom aside and turns his attention back to the injured party.
It’s inaudible, but holding a hand up to Daisuke’s mouth reveals that he is alive and breathing. Iori is immediately hit by a wave of relief.
Wait, no. No. Daisuke is still in danger. This isn’t the time to be feeling relieved. He has to get to work.
Iori moves over to Daisuke’s back, trying and mostly failing to fight back the nausea brought on by the blood staining into his jacket. Bandage…
In movies, Iori vaguely recalls seeing the heroes rip apart shirts or such to make bandages. A minute of desperate tugging at his shirt reveals that he’s not strong enough to pull that off, though. There’s…nothing he can use. What is he supposed to do now…?
Daisuke’s jacket…appears to be absorbing at least something. Would that…work? Maybe, just for a little bit. Right. A little bit. He just needs to make this work for a little bit, yeah.
With this in mind, Iori gets to work. It takes him a few seconds to gather enough courage to grab onto the stinger, but once it’s in his hand, he pulls it out easily. Followed by the jacket, then the shirt. This last movement ends up being far more horrifying than it has any right to be. Oh god, why is his skin so cold? Someone wearing a giant jacket shouldn’t be…this cold. Iori feels another wave of painful nausea wash over him.
He manages to hold his cold, ragdoll leader up long enough to get the jacket tightly around his waist, and immediately runs into another wall of what in the name of god am I supposed to do?
…The others. He should call the others.
He has the d-terminal in his hands within a second and is already typing up the message by the next. They’re in danger. There’s a swarm of Flymon. Daisuke is paralyzed. To Ken, Takeru, Miyako, Hikari.
The message doesn’t send. He retries. It fails again.
Again. And again. Iori feels like ripping his hair out with frustration as he continues trying and failing to send the distress call out.
“I…ori?” Daisuke whispers, so weak that the sound is practically drowned out by Iori’s typing. He makes an attempt to move, but barely manages any more than a twitch. Vomit rises up in his throat, but unable to cough it up, he starts choking on it. This finally gets Iori’s attention, and he gets down to Daisuke’s side again immediately. Daisuke is propped up, and finally manages to cough everything out with the minimal help of Iori hitting on his chest.
“Ah…haha. Sorry…” Daisuke mutters, giving Iori a painfully weak smile.
“I-it’s fine.” Iori says. His apprehension is more apparent than he’d like.
“Nah, not that…I mean. I dragged you out here…’cause I wanted to…be a good leader, and chat with you to be…better friends with you…or something.” Daisuke explains, before stopping to cough up more vomit. “And now I’ve got you…stuck taking care of me. Not exactly…the ‘good leader’ thing to do, huh?”
Iori isn’t quite sure how to answer that. Daisuke had wanted to…chat with him? He wanted to…hear more about Iori? That’s…actually kind of sweet, besides the fact that he’d been completely weird about it.
“Putting aside the fact that you’re a super awkward dork, I think sacrificing yourself to protect your teammate is a perfectly ‘good leader’ move on your part.” Iori eventually says.
“You…make it sound like I’m gonna kick the bucket or something…” Daisuke responds jokingly. Iori can’t really find the humor in any of this. Not knowing what else, he drops Daisuke onto his shoulder and goes back to trying to contact the others.
“Wait...heeeey, who’re you calling an awkward dork?” Daisuke whines softly, apparently only noticing the jab.
“The idiot leader who partnered up with me out of nowhere and tried to get closer to me by asking me about my day like, 13 times instead of just asking me to hang out with him like a normal human being.” Iori says.
“Nooo” Daisuke moans in despair. “My…*cough* reputation as a cool leader is ruined!”
“Nobody ever thought you were cool, dork.” Iori responds, trying to hold back his desire to giggle. Finally, the message sends. Thank god.
“You’re meeeeean.” Daisuke whines, and Iori can’t tell if he’s joking or if the poisoning is making him delirious.
“Alright, well, this meanie needs to go make sure our digimon aren’t dead, so I’m going to put you down, ok?” He says, not actually waiting for an answer and lying Daisuke on his side. Daisuke gives a weak protest to this, but Iori just ignores him and heads across the shaky floor to check outside.
Apparently, the injured Flymon had been waiting in anticipation for him, because it immediately tries to pounce on him the second he steps out the door. Iori lets out a scream as he jumps out of the way. The Flymon crashes into the doorway again, causing the whole frame of the house to shake in a way that makes Iori’s stomach churn. This was a horrible idea.
And now there’s a Flymon between him and Daisuke. God dammit.
Unable to come up with a better plan, he attempts to lure the giant thing after him away from the doorway. He accidentally ends up leading himself right into the heat of the fight. He can’t even see their partners anywhere, but he hears Exveemon’s voice cry out somewhere above him, and sees another Flymon crash into the ground before disintegrating into data.
He tries as hard as he can to not think about it as he darts into a narrow back alley, hoping to loop around back to Daisuke without any pursuers.
He almost gets away with it, and makes the mistake of thinking that he really has when he sees the house come into view. But apparently, the Flymon caught wind of his little strategy, and climbed up onto the roof with the plan of falling down on him. Iori spots it gearing up to jump down in front of the entrance. Nope, not happening.
Iori breaks into a sprint and flings himself into the house. The thing jumps down, and turns around to screech at him, before rearing up and bashing into the house. A chunk of roof hits Iori in the head.
The Flymon starts wailing on the side of the house, and it becomes horrifyingly clear that the ceiling is about to collapse. There’s nothing to hide under, and Iori’s mind starts spinning as he tries to figure out what he’s supposed to do in this situation. He stares up at the ceiling. It’s…caving in closer to where the Flymon. Banking on this, he grabs Daisuke and drags him over to the opposite corner. Daisuke gives a weak sound of suprise, having apparently been too out of it to notice the commotion around him.
“Iori? What’s-” The roof caves in.
Iori feels like he’s gone deaf as he tries to figure out where up and down are. The thunder is gone in a second, replaced by darkness and dust and the sound of Daisuke coughing something up again.
When the dust feels cleared enough for Iori to brave opening his eyes, he finds himself in a tiny, cramped little space with Daisuke drawn up in a ball next to him. The only bit of light comes from a tiny crack in the ceiling. He’s less worried about whether they’ll get out and more about how much Daisuke seems to be hyperventilating.
“Hey, hey calm down. We’re going to be fine. The others are coming right now. They’ll be here soon.” Iori assures him. Through the dust, something smells vaguely like metal.
“I…think…I’m dying.” Daisuke whispers shakily. Iori’s brain comes to a halt.
“…Tell me you’re being dramatic, please.” He says, as his stomach ties itself up into a knotted ball. He can’t breathe.
“That…wasn’t vomit I coughed up…just now.” Daisuke rasps. The metallic scent is suddenly a million times stronger and Iori thinks he might vomit himself.
Outside, he hears Miyako scream.
“They’re here. They’re here, you’re going to be ok. Y-you’ll be fine, ok? Relax, you’ll be fine.” Iori says, trying to comfort himself a bit more than Daisuke.
“Daisuke! Iori!” Ken screams. It’s screechy and frantic, but it’s the most soothing sound in the world at the moment.
“We’re over here!” Iori calls back. The protective bubble surrounding them shakes and caves in closer as Takeru and Ken can be heard above them, sounding breathless as they ask if the two of them are ok.
Iori says yes. Daisuke doesn’t answer.
They leave, and presumably Nefertimon and Pegasusmon start to pull away bits of rubble. Iori and Daisuke’s space gets increasingly smaller as everything loosens and starts sliding towards them. Daisuke’s breathing is nerve-wrackingly shallow, and Iori can’t get him to respond. In spite of himself, Iori starts crying.
Soon enough, the glowing holy binding drops down where Iori can see it and pulls a plank of wood away, illuminating the space significantly. Iori can finally see the sky again, but more importantly he can actually see Daisuke again. As well as the blood spit up over his shirt. He starts crying more.
After another piece is dragged away, Miyako’s face blocks out the sun to come check on them. She turns off to the side and pukes upon seeing Daisuke.
“…W-we’ll be in there soon! Don’t worry Iori, it’s going to be ok!” She assures afterwards. Iori’s not sure how he’s supposed to feel assured by someone who plainly doesn’t even believe herself.
It’s a long, painful wait as the rest of the hole is opened up.
Eventually, the others surround the hole, and Iori lifts Daisuke up to them. Ken and Hikari carry him away as Takeru helps Iori out. He doesn’t get a second to stand on solid ground before his partner pulls him into a suffocatingly tight hug, which then turns into a group hug as Miyako flops onto them, sobbing.
“Hey. You did really great and I’m proud of you, but can you maybe never scare me like that again?” Takeru asks quietly.
“Yeah, ok.” Iori mutters back.
“…Alright then, good! You’re getting a piggyback ride and unlimited access to my snacks stash for the next 24 hours as a reward for being a little hero!” Takeru declares, picking Iori up before he has a chance to protest. Despite everything, Iori bursts into laughter. He hears a click and turns to see Miyako, now smiling, holding up a camera. He doesn’t bother telling her to delete it.
The next day, Iori is at the hospital, with a tub full of Takeru’s favorite chocolate mint ice cream that he’s constantly buying. Daisuke is about as overjoyed about the ice cream as he is about seeing Iori. It’s terrifying to watch him devour it.
Abruptly though, the feast stops, and Daisuke slowly turns his attention back to Iori with a nervous smile on his face.
“Hey I’m…sorry if I scared you.” He mutters. Hit by the sudden whiplash in mood, Iori takes a long time thinking of what he should say. Eventually, he comes up with something good.
“Well I…think there’s a way you could make it up to me.” Iori says with a laugh.
“Oh yeah?” Daisuke says, raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah. Come hang out with me this weekend.” Iori tells him. Daisuke takes a second to process this before bursting into laughter.
“Oh my god that was so cheesy. I think you’re the dorky one, little dude.”
“Nope. Calling me ‘little dude’ just solidified your position.” Iori retorts.
“Oh come on! You let Takeru call you little man!” Daisuke whines indignantly.
“One, only sometimes, and two, Takeru is my best friend, you’re going to need to get some more friendship points for that, mega dork.” Iori claims jokingly.
“Well then I guess I’ll have to come to your house this weekend!” Daisuke says.
“Yup, you sure will.” Iori, trying and failing to hold back a smile.
They push fun at each other for a few more minutes before Iori has to leave, and he goes home thinking about just how much he’s looking forward to hanging out with Daisuke this weekend.

6, for Ken and Iori!
[BrOTP ask meme]
#6 - “I’m gonna hug you now”
The first time Iori saw Ken Ichijouji while unaccompanied, was over a year prior to his first entrance into the digital world, and not in person. It was the first time he ever saw the child celebrity at all, in fact, receiving a first place prize for some sort of judo tournament. The woman on the television announced him as “the renowned prodigy child”, though Iori couldn’t recall having ever seen or heard of him before.
He supposed that was just the result of both a family that pays for very few channels unrelated to sport, and being a generally unsociable and out-of-the-loop child himself. He thought nothing of it at the time, just another social phenomena that would never be connected to him. Though he noticed the name cropping up every now and again afterwards.
The second time he saw Ken Ichijouji on his lonesome was only hours after finding out he was responsible for the enslaving of hundreds. That reveal had been such a shock in and of itself that he’d gone to the graveyard to think.
He’d never questioned why Ichijouji was there, but he turned and ran immediately. Being stuck alone with the Kaiser couldn’t possibly end in anything other than an injury.
The third time was long after the idea of Ken being a threat had left. A group meet up had abruptly turned into Miyako chasing Daisuke off somewhere with a stick, and Hikari running after them in an attempt to derail the situation. Takeru’s lack of involvement was simply because he’d been unavailable to come hang out on that particular day. Ken and Iori held back solely due to a lack of desire to engage in conflict, and to potentially get hit with a stick.
With nothing else to be paying attention to, Iori quickly noticed that Ken appeared to be glancing at him out of the corner of his eye. He tried to ignore it, but quickly found this far too annoying to uphold, and then bluntly asked Ken what was wrong.
“A-ah, nothing! I was just...uh, thinking about things...” Ken explained.
“Could I ask what kind of things?” Iori prompted. In the distance, Daisuke screamed.
“...Just...everything that’s happened with...I don’t know.” Ken fumbled. Iori didn’t know how to answer that, as it wasn’t much of a real statement to begin with.
After a few moments of quiet between them, and more pained yelling somewhere else, Ken started talking again.
“This may be a rather...strange question to ask, after so long. But...how do you feel about me?”
Once again, Iori was at a loss for what to say. But Ken seemed to start twitching and fidgeting as more time passed, so he tried to figure it out as fast as he could.
“...I like you. I think you’re a very sweet person. I...may not really understand you all that well, but for what it’s worth I find you to be kind and trustworthy.” He eventually answered. He then thought about whether or not he could mention that Ken’s smile seemed very soft and pleasant at that moment.
“Thank you. That means a lot.” Ken told him. Then came the rest of the group’s return, with Daisuke bruised and disheveled, and Miyako looking no less irritated than before. In the moment of laughter this brought on, the conversation was forgotten.
The fourth secluded interaction Iori had with Ken happened once again in the cemetery. Iori no longer had to ponder why Ken was there. He asked Ken about it anyways.
“I...came to talk to my brother about everything that’s happened, I guess. I wanted to tell him that I’m finally my own person.” Ken told him.
“What...were you before?” Iori asked, though not entirely serious. Ken didn’t catch the humor.
“I...I don’t know. I’m not sure how to explain it.”
“Fair enough.” Iori conceded.
“I guess it feels like...I’m something now. Yeah, not a genius or anything special, but I guess maybe I wasn’t really those things to begin with.” Ken continued, staring hard at the stone plate in front of him. “I...like to think he would’ve been proud of me.”
“...I can get behind that.” Iori said quietly.
Neither of them were able to say anything for a long time after that. There was something kind of sad but kind of peaceful in the air. Ken just looked over at him, and Iori knew right then that Ken understood. So maybe he didn’t really need to say anything. But he wanted to anyways.
So what he ended up saying was “I’m gonna hug you now.”
And then that’s what he did.
He didn’t really understand everything about Ken, and right then he decided that he didn’t really need to. Ken was Ken, and he was nice, and he was Iori’s friend, and he needed a hug.
Iori could figure out everything else later.

💕 Ken and Meiko
-The first time they meet, Meiko is nothing but intimidated by Ken. It’s not anything he himself does, it’s merely the notion of a younger peer who’s far more intelligent and capable than her that makes her feel uneasy. She’s more than aware that it’s stupid. Ken is nothing but nice to her and by all measurements a kind person who she has no reason to be afraid of. That doesn’t stop her from trying to avoid him.
-Ken isn’t oblivious and he absolutely notices that Meiko seems uncomfortable around him. He isn’t sure what he did to cause the reaction, but if his upperclassman wants to be left alone then…he should respect that.
-Unfortunately for the upholding of this arrangement, the other chosen aren’t blind either. They can see how the two of them avoid each other like the plague. Daisuke and Hikari team up to rectify this by the only means that they know of: locking both parties in a room together and telling them that they can’t come out until they’re braiding each other’s hair and crying about their feelings together.
-Meiko can’t believe that they’re doing this and Ken is terrified because he can absolutely believe that they’re doing this and he knows that there’s absolutely no way that he’s getting out of this. It still takes about ten minutes for him to work up the courage to say something.
-Meiko soon finds something she didn’t know she needed. Awkward Nervous Wreck Solidarity. And it’s the second that she realizes that Ken Ichijouji is not in fact perfect that the rail line switches to send them speeding towards friendship.
-She really feels bad for being so cold to him, now. He was such a nice guy. And Meiko was at least partially responsible for almost getting him killed. Ugh, she’s the worst person.
-Ken insists that this isn’t true. He jokingly says that while he doesn’t know that much about her, he’s at least sure that she can’t possibly be the worst person because that was already him. Meiko takes this way too seriously and scolds him for saying such things about himself and it takes quite a while for him to convince her that he hadn’t really meant that and that she didn’t have to worry because he’d already moved past all that guilt crap, so calm down ok!?
-Meiko is so weirded out because what on earth would such a nice person ever have to feel guilty about? Ken is very, very confused. Gennai had shown up looking like the Kaiser, right? The others never…told her?
-Ken decides that he’s going to strangle Takeru and Hikari for never explaining any of this to her and leaving it up to him to retell the worst part of his life.
-Meiko is completely horrified. Not just by the almost unbelievable story, but by the obvious pain and regret in the younger boy’s eyes. It’s too familiar for her to ever mistake. So she knows that she’s being told the absolute truth. And she also knows that Ken is definitely as sorry as he says he is. And when he apologizes over how he’s probably just freaking her out and making her scared again, she decides to hug him.
-Daisuke unlocks the room after a half an hour and is very pleased at the sight of the two of them involved in a teary heart to heart. He knew these two nerds were going to get along just fine!
-And from that day forward Ken usually chooses to talk to Meiko at full group parties. The other younger chosen actually whine about it sometimes, but he shoves them off saying that he spends practically all of his free time with them anyways and it’s good to hang out with the older chosen for a change.
-Both of them are very good listeners, and horrible talkers. Between the two of them, they can sometimes manage to figure out how talking is supposed to work.
-Meiko honestly prefers telling Ken about her anxieties over anyone else. He never tells her that she’s wrong for thinking those things or dismisses them by saying that she’s amazing and that she’ll do fine and that everything will be ok and that she doesn’t have to worry about anything. She likes to think that she’s doing a good job repaying the favor.
-They jokingly say that ‘no positivity’ is their magic rule. No matter how ‘perfect’ and ‘wonderful’ people will say they are for the rest of time, hanging out together is a special time where they’re both allowed to be garbage.
-Wormmon hates this idea a great deal but Ken reassures him that he doesn’t really mean it and that it’s just a cathartic thing. Wormmon still doesn’t really get it and he still doesn’t like it but if it’s actually making Ken happy then he isn’t going to say anything about it.
-Time passes, and Hikari drags Meiko into more and more of the younger group’s meet ups. It turns out that Meiko is the best at video games. All the video games. Ken compliments her on this and Meiko almost forgets that they’re around other people and that she isn’t supposed to be garbage right now and she has to stop herself halfway through yelling “TAKE IT BACK!”
-Meiko doesn’t think anything of it when one day, in a crowded street, Ken grabs her hand and starts trailing behind her nervously as though trying to hide himself. She actually doesn’t register it happening until after they escape and Ken anxiously apologizes. She brushes it off saying it’s fine. She thinks she remembers Ken ranting at one point about how big crowds totally turn him into an anxious mess.
-Ken is actually the last chosen to switch over to saying Meimei. It just sounds weird to him. It’s not unreasonable, she’s way older than him! She’s practically like an older sister!
-Meiko never comments on this but she’s honestly overjoyed by the sentiment. She always wanted to have a younger sibling. Ken doesn’t even seem to notice that he said it, though. So she’s not going to say anything (He might take it back after all…). She’ll just be happy by herself.

1, digimon
[Send me a number prompt and a fandom and I’ll write a drabble]
1# - “It wasn’t your fault”
under the cut, 1,700 words.
Taichi is sitting in the waiting room again. Because his little sister is in the emergency room, again. Because he messed up.
Again.
Koushiro had said that it was a rather large energy signal. That it could be dangerous to send only the younger kids. And Taichi hadn’t listened to a single word that he had to say. Again.
And now Daisuke and Hikari were in the emergency room.
Koushiro has been saying that they’re lucky it was only them. Taichi sees Iori, tiny little Iori, who looks like he had a deathmatch with a lawnmower and lost. Ken, out for the count after screaming himself hoarse and falling into unconsciousness. Takeru being checked for a concussion. He wonders how the hell he’s supposed to think of this result as lucky.
At least nobody’s dead, they all say. At least nobody died. Because someone definitely could’ve. They all could’ve. They even came pretty close.
And all because Taichi messed up.
He tries to focus on the ones who he knows aren’t going to die, tries to soothe Miyako’s sobbing and stop her from picking at the bandages covering up her face.
Taichi tells Miyako not to cry, but it’s a bit meaningless since she can probably hear that he’s crying himself, even if she can’t see it. He says it’s going to be fine and Hikari is going to be fine and the two of them can go out and buy Miyako her new pair of glasses, it’s going to be ok, Taichi will even help pay for them, ok?
He doesn’t even manage to convince himself.
Iori is probably the most stable out of anyone, despite being the most banged up of the lot. He doesn’t shed a tear. But his eyes remain glued to the doors that Daisuke disappeared through.
Minutes seem to crawl by. Taichi sits for what seems like an eternity, in a room with only himself and the children he’s failed.
Hours pass, along with dinnertime, but Taichi doesn’t bother telling anyone to go eat. He doesn’t think he’d be able to avoid throwing up himself, anyways.
Ken finally wakes up and immediately starts asking for Daisuke. Taichi can’t get any words out of his throat, and Takeru ends up being the one who has to explain that Daisuke is still in the operating room. That they don’t know if he’s going to be ok. Ken goes hysterical again, and Taichi is by far the most useless in calming him down.
Eventually, Jou comes down with dinner from the cafeteria. Taichi feels bad accepting it. He should’ve done that. He offers to pay Jou back, but the older boy refuses outright. He reminds everyone to make sure they get plenty of rest.
Taichi doesn’t think he’ll ever be able to sleep again.
It’s another painstaking hour, before a doctor finally comes out and says that it’s ok for Taichi to see Hikari now. She’s stable. Miyako starts crying from joy.
He feels a bit bad about leaving the younger kids, but it’s not like he was helping anyways. So he just gives them a weak wave and follows the doctor down to the burn ward.
He makes it two steps through the door to her room before he has to start biting back the urge to cry. The bandages don’t make him feel any less like throwing up. He can’t see much of her under them, and so the doctor starts explaining and pointing out where the burn reaches. It goes from all the way down her right arm and up onto her face. Apparently, the greatest damage is around her shoulder and neck. The doctor says they’re still assessing the damage done to the breast tissue. Some part of Taichi’s overloaded brain decides to start worrying about potential bullying and the like. That’s somehow slightly less worrying than everything else, so Taichi comforts himself in imagining how he’ll beat up anyone who dares to call his sister ugly.
Somewhere in the back of his mind, he wonders if his parents are going to beat him up for letting this happen to his sister once they get home. He’d deserve it, at least.
Eventually, he manages to tear his eyes away from the broken little girl who deserves a better brother and a better leader, and he heads back to the waiting room. The second the younger children become aware of his return, the questions start flying. In spite of his earlier resilience, Iori is now sobbing just as much as anyone.
The removal of weight from everyone’s shoulders is more than visible as they hear that Hikari is going to be ok.
Apparently, at some point, it was announced that Daisuke would likely make it through the night, and the doctors told the kids to go home and get some rest. In an attempt to actually get some rest, they’d started arranging for everyone to spend the night at Takeru’s. He offers Taichi a spot on the floor, but Taichi doesn’t think an extra presence would do him any good anyways.
So Taichi goes home by himself and doesn’t sleep. Somehow, he manages to eat something before going down to the hospital once again.
The younger kids are already there. The doctors have already refused them from seeing Daisuke, since they need a family member’s explicit permission. But with Taichi’s arrival, they’re allowed to go see Hikari in pairs. Nobody objects to letting Miyako go first.
She doesn’t manage to keep herself from crying as she and Takeru are lead into Hikari’s room. Maybe that’s a good thing, because Hikari actually starts to stir. Everyone is directly at her bedside within an instant of her opening her eyes. Something in Taichi finally unclenches, then. She’s ok. She’s ok…He can barely hold himself back from hugging her.
“…huh?” Hikari mutters blearily. “What happened…hngh…Alphamon?”
“It’s fine. It’s fine now, Hikari. We’re safe.” Miyako sobs as she clenches onto her hand far tighter than she should.
“…Is Daisuke ok? Where’s Iori and Ken?” She asks, as she starts inspecting the bandages mummying her. Of course, she wouldn’t bother to think about herself for a second.
“We could only come in two at a time since we’re not family…” Takeru explains softly. Taichi eventually can’t take watching her anymore and grabs her hand.
“Don’t fiddle with your bandages.” He says.
“…Sorry. Do…mom and dad know I’m hurt, yet?” She asks.
“…Yeah, they’re on their way home right now.” He tells her. He can’t tell what she thinks of the answer. He doesn’t get the chance to ask, as they’re all whisked out of the room by doctors wanting to bombard her with questions and the like.
When they return to the waiting room, it’s only Iori there. He looks weirdly happy about something.
“Daisuke’s family showed up a few minutes ago. They only want one at a time, so Ken went in by himself, but apparently he’s awake and ok.” He explains with a smile. An almost unified sigh of relief comes out of everyone.
With a few less things to be miserable about, the waiting around feels less stretched out than before. That, and it doesn’t take hours. As a matter of fact, after just a few minutes, Jun and Ken come out into the room again. Ken’s eyes look puffy, but any past tears have been replaced by a small smile.
For some reason, everyone agrees that Taichi should be the next person to go talk to Daisuke. He’s not really sure how to object.
So within a matter of minutes he finds himself facing his little successor, goggles and spine both broken. He still manages to give Taichi a smile somehow.
“Hey Taichi! Oh my god, can you believe they’re putting me in a wheelchair!?” He groans. It’s weird, seeing him so…unanimated. Taichi never noticed until this very moment how much Daisuke used his body to speak.
“Of course I can! Daisuke, you jumped in front of a giant sword. It’s lucky you’re even alive right now!” He exclaims, unwilling and unable to reciprocate Daisuke’s floaty, unphased demeanor.
“…Yeah. I know.” Daisuke responds with a weak chuckle.
“Are you…doing ok?” Taichi asks hesitantly.
“As ok as a guy who took a sword to the chest could possibly be!” Daisuke laughs.
Taichi doesn’t know what to say to that, and there’s a few short seconds of silence before he decides to say something more important.
“I’m sorry I was a bad leader.” Both boys say at the exact same time. Taichi jerks back in shock and stares at the younger boy, seeing a mirrored reaction on Daisuke’s face.
“Daisuke…what are you talking about?” Taichi says in shock.
“…I-I’m sorry. This is all my fault. I’m a terrible leader. I don’t deserve your-” Daisuke starts.
“What on earth are you talking about!? It wasn’t your fault!” Taichi yells. Daisuke looks incredibly shocked as the older boy walks over and gives him the lightest hug he can. “None of this is your fault. Don’t be ridiculous.”
Daisuke opens his mouth to object, but Taichi just shushes him. “No, stop that. You’d wanted to listen to Koushiro, I’m the one who insisted it was fine. You thought the right thing. This isn’t your fault. Don’t think for a second that it is.”
Daisuke doesn’t look all that convinced, but nods anyways. That’s a good enough start, he supposes.
“…Is Hikari ok? I saw her get hit before I passed out.” Daisuke mutters after a few minutes.
“Yeah. She’s fine. She was worried about you when she woke up, y’know.” Taichi tells him, hoping to lighten the boy’s mood a bit. There’s no reason to tell him that he was the first person she asked about, though. He doesn’t need that kind of ego boost. Daisuke chuckles, but otherwise doesn’t say anything about it.
After a few minutes of chatter, he eventually asks to see Iori. Taichi is more than happy to oblige. Iori looks incredibly happy as he runs off to Daisuke’s room a few minutes later.
The rest of the day is spent hanging around Hikari’s room, as well as occasionally popping in on Daisuke. The younger kids do mostly the same, all looking significantly more calm and relaxed without the threat of death looming.
Nobody is dead. They’re all scarred and broken, but maybe that’s just the best thing he could hope for with how badly he fucked up. So he supposes he can think of this result as lucky.
Though he hopes to god it’ll never happen again.

Taichi Yagami
[put the name of a character in my ask and I’ll write ten headcanons about them!]
-The first report card he gets after his trip to the digital world makes his parents jaws drop. Even B’s are impressive when you’re Taichi. Though he thinks that might change now that he has Koushiro to help him out.
-He has nerdier hobbies than one would expect. Popular kids will be surprised to find that he spends most of his allowance money on manga and video games instead of getting a replacement for his old, incredibly bashed up soccer ball. Laugh all you want, nobody will ever outmatch him at Mega Man.
-Taichi loved his uncle’s goggles ages before he was told what they meant. He begged to have a pair constantly. He was so excited to find them in a christmas present one year that he didn’t listen to a word of his uncle’s explanation.
-A few days later after his hype finally settled down, his uncle sat him down again to explain what they represented. After that, his parents had to fight to get him to take them off at all. He tried to wear them to sleep, wear them in the bath. He threw a massive tantrum at school after a girl made the mistake of calling them “dumb looking.” Nobody’s ever questioned his fashion choices since.
-He was extremely pensive about Daisuke having his goggles for the first few weeks after he handed them over. Yamato eventually called him ‘whiny’ enough times for him to shut up about it.
-Hikari eventually sat him down and explained everything that happened regarding the dark ocean. He attempted to run off and go strangle that “waterlogged creepazoid” himself. The only way they managed to stop him was by explaining that Daemon probably already had.
-Frequents at Yamato’s concerts (read: Jun) have noted that for some reason, Taichi is there almost every time. Daisuke once got elbowed in the ribs for suggesting that it could possibly be about Sora. “I’m just supporting my friend, is that so weird?”
-A similar response is given whenever people question why he goes over to check on Jou’s place so often to make sure he’s ok. He has to make sure everyone on his team is taking care of themselves. Who knows how long Jou would spend studying if Taichi didn’t go and check on him?
-He’s also quite often seen in the Inoue family’s store buying large bags of Oolong tea. No, Miyako, no Koushiro is not a grown man, and he most certainly can’t take care of himself.
-Iori is surprised when the ex-gogglehead starts joining the younger chosen in watching his kendo tournaments. And Ken’s judo tournaments. He’d already been showing up to all of Daisuke’s soccer games and Takeru’s basketball games, but this was new. The only answer he gets is “team support.” The older leader is just a very strange person, Iori decides.
