Andir ep 5 - Team building and fleshing out the characters
I enjoyed the ep, even though barely anything happens in it. Instead Cassian gets to know the team better as they prepare for their heist. He barely reveals anything about himself, but he gives them some practical, useful advice too.
Skeen has prison tattoos and Cassian recognizes them. Nemik is a true believer in the cause and is writing a manifesto. Citra is tough and taken. Vel is Vel. Tamaryn is training them. Lt. Gorn is very good at yelling at his subordinates and telling them to clean up around the base as he hides his true intentions.
I liked the constant feeling of the Empire’s looming presence over the team. The low flying TIE reminds of it effectively. Seeing it speed by from the ground makes it feel a lot more dangerous.
Skeen finds Cassians kyber and they all have a confrontation in which Cassian reveals that he’s getting paid. He makes a good point about them making sure they want to do the heist so they don’t blame their doubts about it on him. The issue is clearly trust and everyone has some reason for participating, so it’s better if they all know where they stand.
Meanwhile on Coruscant we learn about Mon Mothma’s family problems - basically her daughter is upset with her for not spending much time with the family and refuses to go somewhere together because she thinks Mon doesn’t really care. The husband is also cross about Mon Mothma about her not telling him about her new foundation. In turn, she says it wouldn’t interest him because it’s charity - meaning he’s greedy. Anyway, politicking and trying to organize rebellion is taking its toll on Mon Mothma’s family life which makes sense.
Karn is getting nagged by his overbearing mother about getting a job and she wants his uncle to find something for him. I can only assume either he will get involved with Empire again or the Rebels. In any case, in his room he’s watching a holo of Cassian, which shows his obsession. He probably wants revenge on Cassian for what happened on Ferrix (I knew he was another Kirtan Loor!)
I liked Dedra’s moment with her assistant in the office as they talk about the cases of stolen Imperial equipment and how it’s convienently random. She also admits her doubts about what she’s even doing there but the assistant encourages her. They’re staying overtime trying to connect the dots. Nice detail with her taking some pills to keep working.
And Luthen is worrying about the mission on Aldhani and his assistant tells him to stop waiting up for the message and get some rest. He has this secret radio station in his shop and it looks similar to something like in WW2 movies. Luthen worries because Cassian is a potential lead back to him if the Imperials catch him.

The story of Hanuman is the story of ourselves
The word Bhakti means devotion. It is the path of the heart. Svaha Yoga is actually a really ‘Bhaktified’ yoga community I would say. Practises that are part of the Bhakti path are; chanting kirtan and puja (offering) but we can also express Bhakti in dynamic practical ways such as showing kindness to others, caring for the environment and its inhabitants. By caring and trying to see all as sacred we empty ourselves of judgement and meet all as no different, no less, no more than ourselves.
Tumblr media
The monkey-god Hanuman is known as “the Greatest Bhakta’’.  Hanuman teaches us about the transformative power of love. When we love others, we step outside of our isolated selves and into a deeper relationship with those around us. As we love – we discover a part in ourselves that is connected, courageous, and capable of far more than we ever thought possible. So therefore Hanuman is also associated of power and courage.
Hanuman is not a monkey for nothing. The monkey is a symbol for the ‘monkey mind’: The mind that is restless and uncontrollable. But through training, the mind can be tamed. Through spiritual practise and effort - We align thoughts, words and actions with a higher purpose. We become more attracted to the idea of contributing to the welfare of others and living a life of  kindness and service on our own path to freedom.
Tumblr media
The mind that worries, stresses and thinks in loops takes up a lot of our energy. It’s just constantly distracted, going here and there. Our collective addiction to our mobile phones can be seen as an extension of that distracted mind. Have you ever felt depleted after a day off physically not doing anything? It’s that mental depletion lots of us are familiar with. There is a saying: ‘’Where  attention goes energy flows’’. So when all attention goes to those worries and thoughts, it takes up so much energy. By quieting and steadying the mind through the practise of Yoga, we can start to actually feel and sense the body. Energy can start to move through the whole system, to nourish and heal the body. That is the first shift that can be felt through the practise of Yoga: a sense of quietness in the mind and health in the body. When this energy is freed up and the body returns back to its natural state of health and balance, this movement of energy can even take us back to its’ original source and we can rest in deeper states of stillness.
Tumblr media
Hanuman is one of the greatest heroes in yogic mythology and you can read about him in the Ramayana. The Ramayana can be red through many lenses. You might read it as a beautiful story or as an inspiration in terms of virtue and good conduct. But, same with the Bible or the Koran or other holy scriptures, we can also read it through a different lens. We can read it as a mirror of our psychological and spiritual development. For me, then all a sudden it becomes a living truth that I can sense in my own system, my own body, happening right now at this very moment. So here it comes:
Tumblr media
‘Ra’ means light, ‘Ma’ means within me, in my heart. So, Rama means the light within me. Rama was born to Dasharath & Kousalya. Dasharath means the ‘Ten Chariots’. The ‘Ten Chariots’ symbolize the five senses (seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, smelling) & five organs of action (hands, feet, speech, excretory and reproductive organs). Kousalya means ‘Skill’. So, the skillfull rider of the ten chariots can give birth to Ram. Or, when my senses are controlled and my actions purified, radiance is born within me. Rama was born in Ayodhya. Ayodhya means ‘a place where no war can happen’. When there is no conflict in my mind, then radiance can down.
And let’s go on a little bit more: The soul is Rama, The mind is Sita, The breath or life-force (Prana) is Hanuman, the awareness is Laxman (the brother of Ram) and the ego is Ravana (the demon king that abducts Sita). Now here it comes: When my mind (Sita),is stolen by my ego (Ravana), then the soul (Rama) gets restless and longs for union with my mind and my mind longs for union with the soul. Now the soul (Rama) cannot reach my mind (Sita) on its own. It has to take the help of the breath — Prana (Hanuman). With the help of the breath (Hanuman) & awareness (Laxman), my mind (Sita) gets reunited with the soul (Rama) and my ego (Ravana) surrenders.
Tumblr media
Still following? We can view the Ramayana as an eternal phenomenon happening all the time, in our own system! Now if we do so, how can we practically apply that in our day to day life?
I was watching a very intimate talk on the meaning of hanuman to our western society by Ram Dass. When he was already very ill, not long before he died. And he mentioned something so beautiful:
‘’If the world is full of blackness and you feel the strong urge to do something about it. ‘Stop there for a moment’. Delve into your being, make contact with the breath and with your heart. First be and then do. Being is ‘Ram’ inside of us. When we connect with being we can radiate love, compassion, peace and joy. Just radiate. Rub off your connection with that inner being. That ís helping society. Lighten up the space around you. That light is spiritual light. Become a mirror to others to let them recognise being within them. First be, then do.’’
We encounter so many people and situations every day. And every time life asks of us that shift of perception that Ram Dass describes. That slowing down, that meeting situations in our life with openness, instead of through the lens of our own narrowed view. It’s seems to me that life is not so much about what comes to us, but about how we are with what comes to us. So next time you are in an argument with your lover or your boss or your child or whomever. Are you able to widen your perspective? Can you step into the others shoes and shift back to your own, even be in all the shoes at the same time? Can you take a breath, quiet the mind, open the heart and let action happen from that place of openness.
When Rama asks Hanuman, “How do you look upon me?” hanuman replies: “When I believe I am the body, then I am your faithful servant. When I know I am the soul, I know myself to be a spark of your eternal Light. And when I have the vision of truth, you and I, my Lord, are one and the same.”
So much is said in this one sentence. This one sentence, I would argue, describes our whole development through the practise of yoga. It reminds me of the eightfold path of Patanjali. First there is the effort towards good conduct. It’s an effort, an active practise to prepare the system (Yama, Niyama; Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana). Then there is the getting familiar with the tasting of stillness, absorption states, tastings of the divine within ourselves (Dyana) and lastly there is the full merging, the resting in the ocean of divinity, there is no more separation (Samadhi).
Hanuman, the great monkey God of the Ramayana is a symbol of the mind that has become disciplined and filled with devotion. Hanuman is the evolved state of our unruly mind that constantly jumps from thought to thought. This mind is fully focused on the presence of the divine within all and acts from that knowing. Hanuman ís the embodiment of the expression ‘Love all, serve all’’.
And the story of Hanuman is the story of ourselves.

Most of you, may have never associated dance and music with yoga. However, the relationship between these are quite strong. All of these have the power to transport you into the state of ‘Ananda’. Many cultures have ritualistic dance and musical sessions, as a part of important occasions and ceremonies. Moreover, these have the power to open your consciousness. For the unversed, if you head to Buddha yogpeeth, you will find that 300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh incorporates music and dance, as a part of the course.

Swami Vishwananda's Bhakti Marga and Parampara
It has been a little strange here at Jiva these past few days. Swami Vishwananda is here with his troupe of disciples, of whom there are a goodly number, perhaps 80 or so.
When I arrived in Vrindavan already a couple of weeks back, almost the first thing I noticed at the corner of Mathura Road and the Parikrama Marg was a big billboard with Swami Vishwananda’s charming smile and glowing tilak staring charismatically out at the world and announcing that he would be giving darshan on March 8 at the Jiva Institute. Below him, in a smaller frame was Satyanarayana Dasa Babaji, who besides being his host will be speaking on the Bhāgavatam at the darshan event.
This is not the first time that Vishwananda and his group have been at Jiva. Satyanarayana Dasaji calls Vishwananda a friend, and indeed the relations between the two are very cordial. Vishwananda's group is mostly young and enthusiastic, predominantly European (German and points east), who are very enthusiastic about kirtan and generally float around in a bubble of love for their guru.
I took it that I was watching a fledgling religious movement – hopefully benign – in its early stages, centered around this Mauritian Indian’s personality as the “embodiment of pure love.” Being such, he has devised his own bhakti-mārga, claiming adherence to the Sri Sampradaya as well as the receipt of grace from the legendary Himalayan kriyā-yoga master, “Mahavatar Babaji” with whom he is in mystical communion. Indeed, he has written two books in which he "channels" Babaji and brings his message down from the Himalayas to today's world.
Tumblr media
Bhakti Marg devotees whooping it up on Holi at Jiva.
Being brought up in Gaudiya Vaishnavism, like many others I naturally had a bit of discomfort with Swami Vishwananda's group from the onset. It comes down to legitimacy. We were trained by Srila Prabhupada to give importance to paramparā, the disciplic succession, despite the technical dubiousness of the Gaudiya Math's own antecedents and Saraswati Thakur's revisioning of the concept. Charismatic leaders like Vishwananda are endowed with great amounts of personal charm and natural leadership abilities can make others trust them with their spiritual lives, In our tradition we have always been quite openly sectarian, and that samskara is still with me.
When I asked about his disciplic succession, Vishwananda wrote to me the following:
I understand the nature of your doubt. I am unconventional. We are from the Sri Sampradaya and yet we worship Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and adopt many customs of other traditions. I count many Gaudiya Vaishnavas as my friends, including of course Mahant Sri Satya Narayan Dasji.
From my point of view I am acting in accordance with what it means to be a real Vaishnava. What is the purpose of being a Vaishnava if we cannot embrace the love and bhakti of our brothers simply because they belong to a different Sampradaya? I recognise those who love God as my friends and family, irrespective of their tradition.
Yet it is as you said, tradition is still important for guidance and focus, and with the information attached I hope your doubts are laid to rest regarding my own legitimacy and that of Bhakti Marga. ______________________________ Guru Parampara
Peria Perumal Thiruvadikalay Peria Pirattiyar Thiruvadikalay Alhwar Emperumanar Thiruvadikalay Koorathalwar Thiruvadikalay Sri Ramanuja Acharya Sri Parangusa Das Srimath Yamuna Muni Srimath Rama Misra Srimath Pundarikaksha Srimath Natha Muni Srimath Satagopa Sri Venkatarya Patha Saktham Sri Ramakya Bhattar Swami Sri Raghunatha Harithakula Bhushanam Sri Veddhavyasotharam Srimath Rangaraja Sri Vedhavyasa Raghunatha Bhattar Swami Kumarar Sri Vedhavyasa Rangaraja Bhattar Thiruvadikalay Sri Vedhavyasa Rangaraja Bhattar Swami Vishwananda
According to Babaji, who spoke to me personally about their relation and also in his introduction at the "darshan" event, they met by accident when SND was taken to Vishwananda's German center, the two became friends and the younger Swami showed respect for SN's learning and spiritual acumen, etc.
I certainly do not know Babaji as someone who would compromise his own integrity or Jiva Goswami's teachings for the sake of any personal benefit. Babaji recognizes Vishwananda has some charismatic power, since he can attract hundreds of people to these darshan events, even in secular Germany where he himself is lucky to attract a dozen or two. But more than that, Babaji appears to have great confidence in the sincerity Vishwananda's desire for bhakti.
It seems to me that Vishwananda has "outsourced" philosophy to Babaji, and he himself along with his disciples all regularly attend Babaji's classes when they are in Vrindavan. Certainly, he is evolving in his practice and teachings, in part due to Babaji's association.
In the beginning I expressed a bit of frustration that a Swami who seems to be in a constant state of philosophical flux should be able to stir up so much interest. "It is all just made up," I said, Then, half seriously, "I think I should also start my own sampradāya," Implying that if he can do it, why can't someone with a little more depth innovate and create appeal?
"What will you call it?" Babaji asked.
I had no quick answer because I could not think of ever being anything other than a Rupanuga. Nevertheless, I know that in terms of strict adherence, it is almost impossible to be a true follower. I said to Babaji, "How can one claim to even understand the words or mood of people who lived 500 years ago when the world has so changed? No matter how faithful we are to a teaching, the times challenge us to adapt to them."
It does indeed seem necessary to adapt or innovate if we want to avoid irrelevance. We came to do good. We wanted to find the highest good so that we could do the greatest good. It is the art of the sāra-grāhī to communicate the essence. But the trouble with scholarship is that we tend to get caught up in intricate details and lose the fundamental simple message that can have an immediate impact on a seeker. Oversimplification, of course, is probably worse, since it leads to facile sentimentalism. Vishwananda talks of "Just Love" and Babaji talks about purifying the concept of love in accordance with Jiva Goswami's philosophy.
Naturally, a person of great charisma attracts various kinds of rumors, usually prurient. For the moment I prefer to see the positive side of individuals like Vishwananda because I believe in the positive side of his teaching. His disciples are keen for the practices of bhakti, which their guru has given them, so what can be the harm? If you believe in the positive values of Harinama and kirtan, then certainly he is leading them in the right direction.
Vishwananda Swami has bought a house just a few meters from the Jiva Insitute, which indicates that the relation between the two is set to continue into the future. Let us hope that Radharani's mercy and the grace of the Goswamis guide both of them.

personal post:
i am so excited to participate in kirtan training. i did a retreat with two of ram dass's students last summer and 80% of the retreat was kirtan. chanting changes my consciousness. it's like being on acid. the only thing that exists is love, connectedness, and the present.
i hope to do the retreat again this year, as well as a weeklong retreat by another of ram dass's students. the retreat is called "healing at edge: conscious living/dying." i have been undertaking death doula and grief work training. i am very happy being a librarian, but i have felt the call to explore death and grief work for a while now. the last several years have changed me, particularly undergoing the transformative journey of my own grief work.
i am not sure where this exploration will lead me. maybe it's just to experience things, feel emotions, and to meet new people. maybe it's to help someone. maybe it's to help myself. as i age, i am less convinced of the part of myself that needs answers. it is liberating and comforting to allow things to unfurl naturally and be pleased with where i'm at in the unfurling without trying to find a meaning or to find answers. sometimes, we are meant to simply experience, not worry about the point of it all.

Mvelo Mahlangu in NYC, Day 11
This morning I made my way over to Sara D. RooseveltPark in the lower east side for a Chinese new year cultural festival. It was my first time taking the F train. When I made it out the subway and got to the park, the feeling that overcame me was one of sensory overload. There were so many people packed around the whole park, firecrackers going off, bright pops of colours and visuals of dragons moving through the crowd. What amazed me was seeing so many people outside of the Chinese community coming together for the event. JP from the day before had also come with his friend and we all admired the festivities from afar. Because it was his first month in NYC, like myself, this was new to him. Sadly we were not able to see much because of how packed it was but also, the ceremony itself hadn’t actually started. Before I left for my next activity in the Bronx, I got a cup of coffee with JP. It was lovely being able to make a friend as fleeting as it was and share the notion of both being newcomers in such a new environment.
Once I got to the Bronx, I knew exactly where to go without the use of my map. Its definitely liberating, memorising a route and being able to walk without feeling lost, simultaneously its easier to take in the surrounding spaces a lot more. As I walked towards the library, on one corner I heard Spanish music playing and then on the next corner heard Congolese music playing.
I got to the library and saw that there were only 6 other people in the auditorium listening to Carlos Jimenez and his band play some latin jazz live for us. It was so lovely being able to immerse myself into a different sphere of music, but a thought popped into my head “Do people outside know that this free performance is happening right now in here?”. It definitely made me wonder about how many local and accessible activities happen back home, but I miss them.
My last activity for the day was going to a Bhakti centre and engaging in something called soul talks. This was definitely all new to me even though I’ve heard snippets in the past about the Bhagavad Gita and Krishna through some Hindu friends. I did not know what I was expecting. But WOW! I was blown away. We all were given a piece of paper with lyrics to sing along to something called a Kirtan. Essentially Kirtan is an active form of meditation through chanting with the purpose of awakening or nurturing ones devotion for the Devine. As we all sang together, there was this crazy feeling of connection, relaxation and “enchantment” that washed over me. And it took me by surprise because I was not at all expecting anything. Throughout the whole Kirtan, I made sure to capture some audio recordings to keep with me to play even after I’m gone. After the Kirtan session, we were provided some food by a local Indian restaurant. Being allergic to Peanuts, I had a scare as some of the food contained nuts. Luckily someone had Benadryl on them and everything was fine. If you have an allergy, I urge you to not forget your allergy medication unlike me, hahaha.
Another surprising experience from coming to the Bhakti centre was that there were a couple of South African people deeply involved in that specific community near the Lower East Side. What was even more shocking was that I actually know one of them from a photography job we did together back home a while ago. Oh what a small world we live in!
I definitely had a wonderful day today just being surrounded by so much music.
