Trouble with sleep
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 402 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: Smile
James wakes up alone in the bed. It’s not unusual these days. Harry’s teeth just started to grow, and the little one has trouble sleeping, keeping them awake most of the night. He is indeed surprised by the silence in the house. He decides to wait for Regulus to come back but the minutes stretch out.
His curiosity makes better of him as he kicks off the blanket and sets his bare feet on the ground. He tiptoes to the child's bedroom careful not to make any noise. If he accidentally wakes Harry up Regulus will kill him just by a look.
He enters the room that's all dark and quiet. The only light is the shining fake stars on the ceiling. James looks around, but no trace of his husband. He is about to leave when he hears a very soft “James.”
He looks in the direction the voice came from. He has to focus to spot a hand waving from Harry’s crib. Regulus is lying in the crib on his side, legs curled up underneath him in a way that can’t be comfortable, sleeping Harry pressed against his chest. Thank god they bought the bigger crib.
James crouches down as he whispers. “Reggie? What are you doing?” He would have laughed at the situation, but to be honest both of them are too tired.
“He just kept crying… and I don’t know. It was the only thing I could think of.”
“Do you need help getting out?”
Regulus shakes his head. “I’m gonna stay here. It looks like he is sleeping better this way so... I just want to be near him.”
James nods and makes a quick decision. He goes back to the main bedroom to take a soft blanket for Regulus and his blanket and pillow. He hands the blanket to Regulus and sets his own on the ground right next to the crib.
“James?”
“If you are sleeping here, I’m sleeping here. We are in this together.” James says and he can see the soft tired smile that spreads across Regulus’ face full of gratitude and love. He reaches out so they can hold hands through the bars of the crib.
“Marry me,” Regulus whispers holding onto James’ hand tight.
“We are already married.” James chuckles.
“Marry me again. It’s not enough. I just…”
James sits up to kiss their intertwined fingers. “I love you too.”

Lunch notes
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 452 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: Note
James is sitting on the sofa enjoying a cup of tea since Harry was finally asleep for more than 30 minutes when Regulus came home from work. Usually, his husband would smile and kiss him if it was a good workday or flung himself on the sofa in his true Black dramatic nature if it was a bad day. But today Regulus just glared at him.
“Hello, love?” James asks testing the waters.
“Oh, am I love now?” Regulus narrows his eyes. At the beginning of their relationship, James would be worried he did something wrong immediately going into a panic spiral. After all these years he learned to wait and see if the situation is truly worth panicking about.
“Reggie, you are always my love, the only one. My heart and soul…” James is watching Regulus carefully if the flattery is helping. “… the meaning of my life. How could you ever think you were anything less than my happiness?”
Regulus scoffs and says hurriedly. “So, where the fuck is my note?”
James has to bite his lower lip and hit behind the mug not to grin widely. “You mean the love notes I put into your lunch boxes you insist you don’t need and are unnecessary and too mushy?”
“Yes.” Regulus glares at him his hands crossed over his chest. Somehow James forgot. It was a crazy morning with Harry running around. He looks up at his husband with an apologetic smile, but he knows the corners of his mouth are twitching.
“I’m sorry.”
Regulus waves his hand gesturing to James. “Write me one now, Potter.”
“Isn’t it a little late now? I will write one tomorrow.” James says reaching for him. Regulus doesn’t put much or more precisely any fight as James tugs to his lap. Regulus settles but is still pouting. James laughs and kisses the wrinkles between his eyebrows. He reaches behind him to pull out a small notebook and pen.
He rests the paper against Regulus’ bent knee so the boy can see as he writes.
For my lovely Reggie, who refuses to admit how much he adores me even tho we are married and have a kid. But he is a terrible liar, so I know anyway. Love you, Jamie
He draws a little heart at the end of the note. “Better, love?” He asks as he folds the paper and gives it to his husband. Regulus buries his face into James’ neck, the note holding close to his chest.
“Thank you.” He wispers. James grins and kisses the top of his head.
Little James knows that in the very back of their closet there is a hidden paper box filled with folded lunch notes.

Tiny steps
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 806 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: Table
“Please.” James is looking at him with those puppy eyes that are really hard to resist. Not that Regulus is not trying. “I wanna see.”
“Stop whining, this blackmail is not gonna work.”
“But you saw Prongs,” James whines again. Ever since James found out Regulus is an animagus he hasn’t shut up about it.
“It’s not a big deal, James.”
James hesitates for a moment and then something victorious sparkles in his eyes. “You know, Reggie, I’m surprised. This is not very Slytherin of you. I thought you would be proud of what you achieved but maybe it’s that easy that everyone can do it. I mean I did.”
“It is not easy!” Regulus hisses and he knows he walked himself into that trap the second the words leave his mouth.
“So why don’t you show me?”
Regulus breathes out. Why can’t James just let things go. “He doesn’t like being around people,” Regulus admits truthfully.
This makes James to pause. “Oh, but… he would like me, wouldn’t he?”
“I’m not sure.”
“Why?” James asks sadly. Regulus walks towards James’ bed to stand between his legs. He softly cradles through the boy’s black curls and smiles at the feeling of James leaning to the touch.
“There are instincts in you, that you can control when you are human. But when you are an animal, your thoughts are not that clear.”
James rests his chin on Regulus' chest looking up at him. “Let me try, please.”
Regulus sights. It’s a lost battle he knows it. He kisses the top of James' head and takes a few steps back. “Don’t be disappointed if this won’t work out.”
Regulus takes a deep breath. Usually, he goes in his animagus form to the forest with no one around. He climbs the trees and digs in the ground. He has his favourite spot on the roof of one of the towers where he just lies in the sun for hours.
He feels the magic in him, the second heartbeat and shifts.
As always, the world seems a lot bigger from the perspective of a small kitten. He shakes his head to clear some fog of his brain. His head snaps to look at the source of the voice. “Reggie, you are so cute!” Before he can react, James is on his feet, taking long steps and reaching towards him.
The kitten squeaks and in a second it’s hiding behind the leg of the table. “Oh, Reg I’m sorry,” James says as he sits on the ground in front of the table. Regulus pushes through the kitten's instincts. He doesn’t want James to think he doesn’t like him. It feels better when the boy is sitting down. “I won’t be loud again, I promise.”
Regulus meows softly. He can see James biting his lip to stay quiet. He slowly walks around the table, his paws silent against the rug. He stops a few feet from the boy holding very still. James smiles at him as he whispers “Hello.”
He lifts his hand to touch him. Regulus fights the kitten again keeping it stay at the same spot. He digs his claws into the rug. He won’t run. He can’t, but hell he wants to. He can hear the fearful whine grumble in the kitten’s chest, his paws trembling. James snatches his hand away and the kitten flinches at the sudden movements.
They both hold very still as James clearly works something out in his mind. The kitten relaxes a little bit. “Oh, you are afraid of hands,” James says softly as he stares at his hands like they personally offended him. “I’m sorry, love. But you know I wouldn’t hurt you, right?” Regulus nods because he knows that. It’s James. “But instincts…” James whispers more to himself in understanding.
Before Regulus can do anything else James is moving again. He lies on the floor on his stomach, his arms folded underneath his chest. “How about this? See? I won’t touch you.”
The kitten eyes him suspiciously, but without the big grabby hands, it is easier for the kitten to move. Regulus hasn’t realised that this could be the solution. He slowly approaches the boy, who patiently holds very still. He stops in front of him looking deep into those brown eyes.
“You are very beautiful,” James whispers and when the kitten just blinks in interest he continues. “I love the grey colour. Also, don’t bite me, but I can’t get over how fluffy and cute you are.”
Regulus wrinkles his nose the long whiskers flying around as James laughs. With his heightened hearing the sound completely surrounds him. It’s not deafening or threatening. No. James' laughter was always calming for Regulus. He meows happily and bumps his nose against James' glasses leaving a smudged spot.
“We got this, little one,” James promises and the kitten purrs.

Pair of gloves
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 683 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: Snow
Regulus closes the book and sights at the sound of his phone ringing. He picks up the phone and hesitates at the name James Potter on the display. James for some reason Regulus was still suspicious about started to spend time with him. He calls him just to talk or texts him random thoughts over the day. Regulus is not sure why. Don’t get him wrong, he likes the boy and the attention he is receiving. He just doesn’t understand why James even bothers with him.
“Yes?” Regulus says as he picks up the call.
“Well hello to you too, Reg,” James answers and Regulus can hear the amusement in his voice. “Are you home?”
Regulus narrows his eyes before answering. “Why?”
James laughs. “That means yes, great! I will pick you up in 10 minutes meet me downstairs.”
Regulus throws up his free hand in the air. Where the good manners of announcing your visit a few days beforehand went. He looks outside and yes, it’s still snowing. The white blanket lies heavily on the ground. “No. It’s cold.”
“So dressed up. Don’t forget your scarf, I know you have one. And gloves, Reg.”
“I’m not going outside, James.”
“You have 8 minutes.” James singsongs and Regulus can hear how the snow crunches under his shoes.
“I’m gonna leave you there standing.” Regulus resorts knowing already that it’s an empty threat. James apparently knows it too.
“Don’t forget the gloves. See ya.” And hangs the phone. Regulus stares at the phone and then looks outside and back at the phone. Unbelievable. He thinks and gets up intentionally omitting the gloves just out of pure spite.
Fifteen minutes later Regulus opens the door to see James waiting for him. He is dressed in a warm jacket and a red scarf around his neck. He is not wearing a hat, so the white snowflakes catch in his dark curls decorating it. Regulus refuses to acknowledge how cute it is. “James.” He greats.
“Reggie, how are you today?” Regulus can see the excitement shining from the boy.
“Cold. Why are we outside, when it’s snowing?” Regulus asks still hidden under the tiny roof over the door. James looks at him as if Regulus have just asked the most stupid question.
“Because it’s snowing? It’s beautiful, isn’t it? Come one, let’s go.” James says and takes a few steps back carefully watching if Regulus follows. When he isn’t he stops again smiling widely like he is enjoying this game too much for Regulus’ liking.
“Where are we going?” Regulus asks. He already made his way downstairs so he will be going, but he would appreciate knowing the plan, thank you very much.
“We are building a snowman!”
“We are not children anymore.” James takes a few steps back standing right in front of him.
“Oh, Reggie. And who said you have to be a child for us to build a snowman? I love it. And Sirius told me you never did it much as children because of your parents, so we are making up for it! Will you please do me the greatest honour and stop stalling?”
Regulus tries very much not to blush at the intensity James is giving him puppy eyes. He is a weak man and scoffs at the fact his legs move against his wishes. He briefly wonders what James would have to ask for Regulus to truly say no. He looks down at his bare hands and regrets not bringing the gloves. He starts to open his mouth to suggest he will just stand there and watch while James builds his desired snowman when James laughs.
“Oh, don’t even try that. I’m having no excuses today.” He buries his arm into his bag and hands Regulus another pair of gloves. “I brought spare ones because I know you are stubborn.” James leans closer, his shoulders bumping against each other and mock whispers. “I have you figured out, Reggie. There is no escaping now, you’re mine.” Regulus fastens his steps in an effort to hide how his breath hitch up at that.

Worth it
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 1 160 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: Eyes closed
CW: Torture (Crucio), Injury
James is lying on the floor of the hall of Grimmauld Place. He can see the front door. They were so close. He hears Regulus shouting at his mother to let him go, the muffled noise of Regulus banging on the invisible wall that keeps him separate. The desperation in the voice of the boy he loves breaks his heart. He failed him, and now he will pay the price.
Walburga raises her wand at him. Before the pain hits him he thought he knew what to expect. He couldn’t be more wrong. Nothing makes you prepared for this. The pain is blinding. It consumes him. James screams as he feels every nerve in his body lit up in fire. Time stops making sense after a while. He tries to keep his eyes closed because the light is blinding. The last thing he hears before he blacks out is Regulus’ pleades.
James wakes up in his bed. The first thing he sees is the worried faces of his parents. He tries to move, but his body is aching. “James?” His mum whispers.
“What happened?” James is surprised at how raspy his voice is, and then suddenly everything rushes back. “Regulus! We have to go back for him!”
Effie holds him by his shoulder so he doesn’t try to get up. “You are safe, honey. Both of you…”
“James!” the dark-haired boy rushes into view. He has his hand on James immediately. He pats over his body to make sure James is really here. “I’m so sorry. James. I’m sorry.” His cheeks are strained river of tears. James wants to tell him it’s okay, just to make the devastated look of his go away.
“What happened?” James asks.
His father is the one to answer his voice carefully controlled. “You were under cruciatus for some time.” James waves his hand to let them know he is aware of this part. He notices his hands are still shaking. “According to Regulus, after you passed out he succeded in overcoming the magic barrier, and he apparated both of you out. Walburga is in Saint Mungos.”
“How?” James asks because Regulus didn’t have his wand if he recalls it right.
“Accidental magic,” Effie says softly.
James wants to reach out to Regulus. To thank him. Or just to touch him but when he reaches out his hand violently twitches.
Regulus lets out a loud sob. “No! No no no. I’m sorry. It was too long. I was slow. James!” He captures James’ twitching hand. He climbs onto to bed, pressing the hand against his chest until it stops twitching.
“It can be a side-effect of strong crucio. It should go away.” Effie comments, but James can see the worry on her face.
“He is hurting!” Regulus shouts as he starts patting around the bed looking for his wand.
“Darling, he is safe. No one is hurting him anymore.” Effie tries to calm him down, but Regulus snaps at her.
“You don’t understand. The body remembers.” He doesn’t explain further. James’ heart breaks for the fact that Regulus is right. He hates the idea that Regulus clearly knows the feeling first-hand. Every time his hands twitch for a split second the pain is back. “I’m gonna fix it! I’m sorry, I’m gonna fix it.”
Regulus is frantic, mumbling to himself as he takes James' left hand. He points his wand at the veins there and casts a spell James doesn’t recognize. He drops the wand and starts swiping his fingers across James’ forearm all the way to his fingers. The movements are too shaky to be consistent. He repeats the process over and over. Spell. Massaging the hand. Pleads for it to work. Apologies. And repeat.
James really tries not to let his hand twitch just for Regulus' sake, but there is no use. “NO! Please work. I… it has to work. I will fix it. James… Jamie… I’m sorry. So sorry.”
James watches Regulus' fingers. There are several cuts on them. He looks up, and he notices the cut on Regulus' forehead. Why wasn’t he healed?
“Reggie.” James tries to stop him. Regulus doesn’t look at him. James thinks he can’t without breaking. He is focused on his fingers desperately trying to help him. “You are injured. I’m gonna be fine. It's better already.”
Regulus’ breathing is getting more panicked by the minute. James' hand twitches again, and Regulus just folds. He collapses on the bed clinging to James’ hand. He kisses the hurting mussels. “Please work. Why is it not working? I… I have to… James, I’m sorry. Fuck. Why is it not working?! Sorry. I’m so sorry.”
James grits his teeth as he lifts his hand urging Regulus to look at him. He is a mess. This is what a broken person looks like. “Regulus. Listen to me. We are okay. You don’t have to be sorry.”
“I do! It’s my… fuck, it’s my fault. You were there for me. And she… she hurt you. You. My Jamie. She… and you… I’m sorry.”
“Love. I need you to listen to me.” James urges softly pushing past the pain to swipe his thumb across Regulus’ cheek. “You are hurt…” Regulus opens his mouth to object. “Listen. You are hurt, and I want you to sit there and let my mum heal you. Will you do that for me, please, love?”
“But you…”
“For me. Please?”
Regulus looks like all the fight in him left his body. He walks across the room without another word. “Thank you.” James whispers to his mum.
“Son, we did everything we could. I’m not sure what Regulus was doing. Did it help?”
James shakes his head. “It would have, but he is in too much of a shock to be in control of his magic. I could feel what he was attempting to do, but… Don’t tell him, tho.”
Monty looks at James with a solemn expression. They both are thinking about the reason why Regulus knows the spell. James can’t handle it. It’s too much. Instead, he looks at the boy again. He is sitting in the chair Effie waves her wand around him. James can see him clenching his fists to keep himself in place.
Effie is talking to him in her special soothing voice. Regulus doesn’t respond, but he looks up at Effier after a while. And James can see it. The surprise someone is caring for him. That someone is treating him kindly. He looks like he never experienced adults treating him well.
“Dad, look,” James breathes out not looking away from Regulus who whispers something back to his mum. “Look at him. I mean. He is here. We made it. And he is gonna stay with me. I’m gonna make sure he will finally have a safe loving home.”
Monty puts a hand on James’ shoulder. James looks up at his dad and says proudly. “It was worth it. For him, it was worth it.”

Happy birthday
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 599 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: snitch
“Regulus!” James’ voice echoes through the corridor. It was late afternoon, and classes were already over so he was planning to spend the rest of the day in the library.
“Potter.” Regulus turns around sighting. James stops in front of him, his hand behind his back, smiling. It takes willpower for Regulus not to stare at his lips. “Do you need something?”
“Happy birthday,” James says softly. Well, Regulus certainly wasn’t expecting this.
“How-“ Regulus is about to ask. He never told anyone at Hogwarts. So, the only way James knows is… He narrows his eyes “That little snitch. Sirius told you.”
James nods sheepishly. “You don’t celebrate your birthday?”
“No,” Regulus answers shortly.
“Why?” James looks truly sad. Like it was the biggest tragedy.
Because at least this way I don't have to watch them forget about it. He thinks but instead says “It’s not a big deal. Just a regular day as any other.” He shrugs.
“Oh, if you prefer it this way,” James says, and no Regulus does not prefer it this way. He would love to celebrate his birthday, with his friends and his brother. But it was never an option. His parents used his birthday to have dinner with important people focusing on politics instead of their son. And in Hogwarts Regulus just resignated. Even though he watched others have a nice lunch or small party with a longing look in his eyes, he never asked for his own celebration.
“Anyway, I got you something.” James smiles again and hands Regulus a package wrapped in green wrapping paper with a silver ribbon.
“You got me a present?” Regulus breathes out in awe. He certainly did not expect this. Regulus talks to Sirius’ friends from time to time. But he didn’t think they cared about him. He was just the little brother of their best friend, nothing more.
“Of course, I did!” James grins but then his smile falls slightly. Regulus immediately wants to destroy anything that makes James’ smile waver. “I… Sirius told me just two days ago, so I didn’t have much time. It’s not anything special, but…” He gestures to the package.
Oh, if this boy only knew how much it means to Regulus that he got a present. And specially from James, the boy who he is pining about for ages. Regulus carefully unties the ribbon and unwraps the paper. Inside is a black notebook with gold ornaments drawn on it. Next to it is a matching calligraphy set. It’s beautiful.
He looks up to see James nervously watching his reaction. And for once Regulus lets himself to be happy. He smiles at James. “Thank you, it’s great. I really like it.” He shifts his gaze back to the gift nervously, because James is watching him earnestly, and he is too close, and Regulus wants him. He always wants him.
“I’m glad you like it. So, happy birthday Reg. You were walking somewhere, so I don't want to keep you. See you around, yeah?” James says.
Regulus nods. “Yeah, see you around.” James lingers at the same spot for a moment longer, but when none of them say anything more he turns around and starts walking away.
“James?” Regulus calls for him before he can stop himself. The boy in question turns around with a bright smile. “Thank you.”
Regulus was never into birthday wishes. It was silly in his eyes and never came true. But maybe this year he can allow himself to wish for one thing or more precisely one person. He closes his eyes and makes his wish.

Soft touch
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 487 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: forest
“Show me,” Regulus demanded when James told him about being an animagi. From the boy’s expression, James couldn't make out what he was thinking. They walked slowly towards the forbidden forest and James was more nervous with each step they took. No one ever saw him in his stag form except the Marauders. He told himself it didn't matter if Regulus won't like Prongs. This can be the only time he sees him. It's not like James is lying in the dorms as a stag. He is not small and cuddly like Padfoot or Wormtail.
When they stopped at the clearing close to the edge of the forest James turns around. Regulus is watching him expectantly and James feels the knot tighten in his chest. Okay, well, so he does care he realised. He cares a lot. Because Prongs is part of James and if Regulus…
"Okay. Let's do this." James says because he wants to get it over as soon as possible.
The second he transforms the other boy takes a quick step back. Prongs lowers his head in disappointment. He should have expected this. He sits down folding his long legs below him. Sometimes James wishes his animagus was also something soft as a dog, so he could snuggle with his friends and play in the dorm. But it always was the case with him. Too much as an animagus, too much as human.
He doesn’t mind taking care of the others during full moons, it’s his role in their little pack. And he took the role gladly. He just wished that once he was the one someone would be soft with.
Prongs lifts his head at the sound of steps. Regulus is slowly approaching him with wide eyes. He crouches in front of him, and his expression softens. “You are beautiful.” he breathes out. And James wants to run around with happiness.
Regulus reaches for him, but he stops a few inches from Prongs’ face. “Can I?” he asks, and James presses his face to the palm of Regulus’ hand.
Regulus chuckles and keeps swiping his hand over his head, scratching behind his ears and antlers. It feels good, so good. James forgets that he should stay still and flops himself on a side so Regulus can also pet his neck, back or belly.
“Okay, careful.” Regulus says because Prongs’ antlers missed him only by a few inches. “Hold on.” Regulus sits beside him and keeps petting him. Prongs is making happy noises.
Regulus frowns for a moment watching the stag in front of him. “You don't get a lot of pets, do you?”
Prongs rests his head on Regulus’ legs sadly nudging him with his snout so the boy would resume petting. He wants to get as much as possible of these soft touches.
“Okay, okay.” Regulus laughs. “It's their loss, you know? You have really soft fur and frankly, you are absolutely cute.”

Sugar in a coffee
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 317 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: coffee
“Reg! Reggie!” James bursts into the room wide grin on his face. As soon as he spots Regulus, he basically runs to him. He jumps over the back of the sofa landing at Regulus’ legs. “Here is the love of my life. How are you? How was your day?” James asks before Regulus can fully comprehend his arrival the boy presses a kiss to his lips. His lips taste unusually sweet.
“I'm good. How are you?” Regulus asks. James moves to sit up gesturing with his hands widely as he describes his day to perfect detail changing topics that it takes Regulus strong concentration to keep up. Not even to mention that he is talking twice faster than normal.
"You are awfully cheerful that you were supposed to study the whole day.” Regulus squirms his eyes at him.
James grins at him. “Oh, I was getting tired, so Sirius gave me a coffee. And it didn't work so he gave me another one! But Reg...” James makes a face. “It tasted horrible. How can you drink it regularly?! You drink a lot of coffee. But I like the smell in our kitchen. And watching you there. Anyway, it was horrible, but I put a lot of sugar there and it was fine. Do you also drink coffee with sugar? I just realized I don't know. How come I don't know? Does it make me a bad boyfriend? I don't want you to think I'm a bad boyfriend. But I think you don't drink it with sugar...” James keeps talking and Regulus wonders if he is even breathing. He reaches for his phone nodding towards James as a sign he is still listening. He dials his brother's number.
“Sirius Orion Black, I'm gonna kill you.” he hisses as soon as Sirius picks up the phone.
Sirius laughs. “Looks like James got home.”
“Dead,” Regulus says and hangs up.

Zoo
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 368 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: cat
“Look Harry over there.” Regulus points toward a large enclosure with giraffes. He is holding his son in his arms. The boy is constantly wiggling making Regulus worried he will drop him. But Harry refuses to sit stroller and they are outside for too long for them to expect him to walk anymore. James is leaning against the handles of the stroller sipping his slushie.
“Do you see them? These are giraffes. They are the tallest on earth.” Regulus is explaining to his son without noticing that Harry is not paying attention at all.
“Papa, papa! Kitty!” Harry shrieks.
“No, it’s a giraffe.” Regulus corrects.
“Down, down.” Harry insists trying to wiggle from Regulus’ embrace. As soon as he puts him on the ground Harry starts to toddle towards the bench not even glancing back at the giraffes nor his father. The thing that caught his attention is indeed a black cat.
James laughs at Regulus’ pure disbelief. “Gently, Harry,” James calls after Harry who is now trying to pet the cat.
“But…” Regulus opens his mouth. “…there are giraffes over there…” Regulus gestures helplessly.
“He found a cat.” James holds the laughter.
“But we are at a Zoo...”
“The cat is pretty cute though.”
“The tallest animal on earth…”
“Look how happy it makes him.”
“He never saw giraffes before…”
“But he found a cat.”
Regulus turns to his husband. James is biting his lower lip in an attempt not to laugh at him. Which is truly hard since Regulus looks completely lost. In the end, they spend over an hour at the same spot with Harry petting the cat grinning widely.
“It made him happy, Reg. It doesn’t matter.” James holds him around his waist as Regulus pushes the stroller with sleeping Harry in it.
“I know. But I wanted him to learn about new animals.”
“We can watch Madagascar tomorrow,” James suggests. Regulus rolls his eyes because no it’s not the same and also, he suggested it only because it’s James’, not Harry’, but James’ favourite cartoon that he saw thousand times before. But well, his son did have a good day and Regulus is already planning another trip to Zoo to have another try.

Taking care
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 390 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: Plant
James is sitting in the living room. On the table in front of him is a plant that used to be green and had beautiful flowers. Now it’s brown, bearly holding up with no trace of those purple petals. He can’t even look at it anymore. He really tried to keep it alive this time. But sometimes he forgets to water it because he gets too busy and then he couldn’t remember when he watered it the last time. He tried to correct it and probably overdid it. So maybe the sun would help, or was it too much sun? It didn’t matter in the end. Because going by the colour of the plant it was way past saving now.
The thing is, he always loved flowers so much. He wanted to have the whole flat full of them, green everywhere. But he couldn’t keep alive not even a single one.
He can hear the door open, and he doesn’t need to look up to know it’s Regulus coming to pick up Sirius to go for a coffee as they always do on Wednesdays. He just continues to sit there trying desperately to find any sign of life in the plant, still hoping that maybe he can somehow save it.
“Killing plants, Potter?” Regulus snorts. “What did you do to the poor one? Tortured it?” Regulus expects James to look up with a grin on his face and a sarcastic answer on his lips. Instead, James abruptly stands up and picks up the flowerpot with his head down.
“Obviously.” He mutters and disappears to his room without another word. He puts the plant in the corner of the room, so he doesn’t have to look at it.
~.~.~.~.~
It’s the next day after James comes back from school lectures when he finds three new plants on the table in his room. Next to them is a simple note:
I’m sorry. - R.A.B. Ps.: I can come over from time to time to check on them if you want to.
James picks up the plants and puts them in different parts of the room so he can always see at least one no matter what he’s doing. He takes his phone out and searches for Regulus’ name. He types a short message with a smile on his lips: Thank you. I would like that. Maybe this time, it will be different.

Away from others
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 600 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: Cruel
Regulus was never much bothered by what other people were saying about him. He usually didn’t even listen to them. Most of it wasn’t even true. But lately, he started to listen, when his name was spoken in the same sentence as James’. Firstly it was their surprise at the news of the two of them dating. Rumours always travelled in Hogwarts fast- usually thanks to the Ravenclaws. But the surprise shifted into a discussion of why James bothered dating him of all people. He tried to ignore them, he knew James loved him, and that was enough. It was several cruel remarks about Regulus being only rebound after Lily turned James down that made him hesitate. How James was only passing time until someone better came up.
“I don’t know, maybe they can make it work.” Said some Ravenclaw girl which Regulus didn’t bother learning her name.
“True…” Hufflepuff boy continued in a hushed voice. “But you saw all the grand gestures and proposals he always did for Lily, have you seen him doing something like this for Black?”
Regulus tried to ignore them, but this… this sentence was stuck in his mind. Because they were right, weren’t they?
They were in the astronomy tower sitting beside each other looking at the start as they always did. Just the two of them, out of the site of others. And Regulus’ mind was running miles per hour Rebound, Lily, Passing time, James used to look at Lily so in love.
“James?” Regulus said before he could stop himself. James hummed turning towards him. Regulus tried to think what to say, anything other than exposing his insecurities.
“What is it?” James asked catching on the hesitation.
“I was just thinking, I remember you were always so loud about wanting Lily,” Regulus said quietly.
“Lily? Why are we talking about Lily?” James asked confused turning his whole body towards the boy next to him.
“I just… you always did these grand loud gestures for her.” Regulus chewed on his lower lip anxiously. “But you never did something like this for me.”
James' eyebrows shot up in surprise. “You want me to do something like that for you? Sing you in the great hall in front of everyone for example.”
“No,” Regulus answered instantly, because no, in no world he would like that.
James smiled at him as he reached out pushing a fallen curl behind Regulus’ ear. “That’s why I don’t do that.”
Regulus nodded because, yes, that made sense. But if James really loved him, wouldn’t he want to anyway?
“Reg…” James said. “I like that I can be here with you like this. That our relationship is just… ours. I like loving you in quiet. It’s peaceful and calm. Something I never knew I needed until you.”
And oh, suddenly Regulus understood. It was a good thing James didn’t do that because that way he could just be with Regulus the way he wanted. Steady and sure.
It was a week after their conversation. Regulus still heard the whispers in the hall about them, but now he knew better than to doubt himself and James. And the rest of his fears disappeared when James took him to a forbidden forest one night. Regulus complained of course, because “It’s called forbidden for a reason, Potter.”
Then they arrived in a hidden meadow, lightened up by dozens of small lanterns and a blanket with a basket in the middle. It took his breath away. “For you so you don’t feel left out on some of my romantic skills, but here away from others. Just for us.”

Choosing sides
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 913 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: Choose
Regulus wakes up in the come-and-go room alone. At first, he is confused, because James never leaves him without saying goodbye. And today is a really bad day to start with it. Then the memories from yesterday rush back. The argument, the betrayal in his brother’s eyes, the panic in James’. Regulus didn’t expect Sirius to take the news about his and James’ relationship easily. He knew he would be angry at Regulus for… Sirius is always angry at Regulus for something. He just hoped this time it would be different. It wasn’t. What he wasn’t prepared for was James’ reaction. His boyfriend looked heartbroken. You really chose him over me?! Sirius snapped. I thought better of you than to lie to me about something like this. Sneaking with my brother behind my back?!
Still, James stayed the night with Regulus in their room, holding him close. Regulus tried to reassure him, but he was always useless when it came to being emotional support. But he didn’t expect to wake up alone.
He rushes out of the door not being able to stay there any longer. He won’t cry. James left and Regulus felt like the world ended. He can feel the panic rising in him, but he pushes it down. He is angry and scared.
It’s still early when he runs across the castle straight to Gryffindor Tower. He doesn’t even care if anyone sees him. How reckless he became.
He bursts into James’ dorm room only to find his brother alone standing in the middle of the room. All the fear turns into anger as he looks at the source of his problems. “Are you happy, brother?” Regulus snaps and spreads his arms leaving his body bare. It doesn’t matter, he can’t hurt more anyway.
Sirius frowns. “What the fuck are you talking about?”
“He left me. I woke up and he was gone.” His voice breaks a little at the last word. “I hope you are happy.” Regulus won’t cry. He refuses. He clenches his fists digging nails into the palm of his hand.
“I didn’t do anything.” Sirius snaps offended.
“Of course, you did. You made him choose. Me or you.” Regulus says bitterly.
“Reg…” Sirius interrupts him, his eyes flicker towards the door.
“Don’t call me that!” Regulus spits. “You took him away from me. He is the only good thing I have left! You got mad at him for being with me and of course James will choose you. I know that. I’m not stupid enough to think he would choose me.” Regulus laughs but it’s empty.
“Regulus.” Sirius tries again but he ignores him.
He wanted to be angry at his brother, but the determination left him. There is no reason to fight, he already lost. “I knew he would leave me at some point. I just…” His voice breaks again. “I wanted to be happy a little longer. I never got to have something good. I just hoped you would actually want me to be happy. You won, Sirius. You will get everything I ever wanted I will be alone… again.”
“Reggie?” A voice says from behind him. A cold shiver runs down his spine as he recognizes the voice. He turns around to see James standing at the door with wide eyes. There is no doubt he heard most of it.
Oh, Regulus made an even bigger fool out of himself. He would never let anyone see him like this, but then he looks at James, this beautiful kind good person and he would have begged to have him back. If it could save him, he would get on his knees and beg anyone to let him keep the boy for a little longer.
James takes a few quick steps and stands in front of him his hands cuping Regulus cheeks. That’s not fair he thinks as a tear rolls down. He can’t be strong with the reminder of what he’s lost. Maybe James can pretend for a little longer he wants to stay with Regulus. He will take it. And maybe it makes him pathetic, he doesn’t care.
“Love, what is happening? Why are you here?” James says softly, always so soft with him.
“I woke up and you weren’t there. You never leave me. And I just…” Regulus whispers. James' eyes widen.
“I went for breakfast. Reggie, I did not leave you. And when I came back you were gone.” James explains and Regulus doesn’t fight the tears.
“You would come back for me?”
“I never left,” James assures him pressing a kiss to his forehead.
Regulus wants to run and hide from the humiliation of the whole situation. Regulus wants to never leave the touch of James Potter.
“Did you mean that? All you said?” James asks swiping a thumb over his cheek. Regulus closes his eyes. The need to run wins, but before he can make an escape James brings him into a hug.
“No running away, love.” He whispers to Regulus before he straightens his body and says out loud even for his brother to hear. “We are talking about this, all three of us. I’m not choosing sides…” He holds Regulus closer. “…Because there are no sides to choose from. We are gonna sit down and solve this. No one is leaving anyone. And maybe if we are lucky, you will realise that even tho you both are amazing strong people, as a team you would be invincible.”

Always on me
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 380 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: ring
Regulus was sitting at the diner table with plates and glasses prepared for more than an hour. James’ shift was supposed to end at eight. It is almost ten now. The dinner Regulus cooked is cold by now.
He is not angry at James. He knew what he was getting himself into by dating a medical student. He was just excited to have dinner together.
He is reading a book to pass the time when the front door swings open and James stumbles in. His face twists with the guild when he spots Regulus waiting at the table.
“I'm so sorry, Reggie.” he rushes to him. “The shift went late and my phone died...”
But Regulus stops him. “That is fine, don't worry.” he smiles at him just happy that he is finally here. James brings him in a tight hug, kissing him apologetically.
When he pulls away Regulus is about to say something but his eyes lie on James’ hand. Specifically on his ring finger. The spot, where supposed to be an engagement ring, is empty.
He freezes because James promised him he will always have it on him. James seems to sense that something else is wrong, worry written in his eyes.
“What is it?”
“You don't have your ring” Regulus breathes out.
“What-” James starts to say as he looks at his hand. He smiles at him. “Oh, forgot to put it on in the hurry.”
Regulus is still staring at the hand. It shouldn't be a big deal. It's just a ring, nothing more. But apparently, it is going by the disappointment settling in him.
“I can't have it on at work,” James explains and well it makes sense. James nudges him slightly to speak up.
“I just... Well, you said you will always have it on you... Sorry, it's silly. I was just surprised.” Regulus shrugs.
“I do,” James says and pulls out his golden neckless from under his shirt. On the the end is swinging the ring. “I always have it close.”
“Oh.” it's all Regulus manages to say in relief. James places a kiss on his forehead.
“Let's have dinner. You must be starving and it smells amazing.” James leads him to the kitchen as he slips the ring back on his finger.

That’s everything.
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 694 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: taking chances
It was the sound of drawers being opened and closed and loud shuffling that have woken up James. He quickly scanned the empty room. According to the alarm clock on his nightstand, it was half past two in the morning so none of them had any reason to be up yet. James was having a mental debate if he should get up and check what was happening when a loud sound of something dropping echoed from the other room followed by exhausted sigh. Right, that’s his cue.
When James enters what will in a few weeks be a child's bedroom, he sees Regulus sitting on the ground with a box full of children's safety cupboard locks. He has his face hidden in the palms of his hands. There is a manual laying a few feets away from him. James guesses that it wasn’t helpful, so Regulus probably tossed it across the room.
“Sweetheart?” James asks quietly and Regulus’ whole body jerkes in in alarm since he apparently didn’t hear James come in. Sorry James mutters as he sits down in front of the other boy.
“What are you doing?” He asks with concern. James would laugh at the clearly despaired expression on Regulus' face his dishevelled curls that he gets when things don't go his way if it wasn’t for the hint of tears in the corners of Regulus’ eyes.
“Did I wake you? Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.” Regulus says completely ignoring the question.
“That’s fine. So, why are we mad at the cupboard locks?” James reaches for the manual to read it. Regulus apparently decided to do this right now in the middle of the night and from experience, there is no changing his mind.
“They are stupid.” Regulus resorts and when James arches an eyebrow at him he adds. “And the manual it’s even more stupid.”
“Okay.” James puts down the manual because even its presence seems to be offending Regulus. “Reg, you know we have plenty of time since we will need these, right?”
“Harry will be here in three weeks,” Regulus says, and James can hear the slight panic in his voice.
“Right…” He takes one of the cupboard locks from Regulus’ hand and interlinks their fingers instead. “But he won’t be able to reach the cupboards for a long time.”
“I’m not taking any chances,” Regulus says immediately.
James chuckles a little. “Reg, he won’t be able to walk or even crawl for months.”
Regulus gives him an unimpressed look. He knows this. They both do with the ridiculous amount of parenting books they have read. But if Regulus will feel better with the locks on, they will have the locks on.
“Okay, let’s look at the manual again,” James says as he squishes closer to Regulus so they can reread it together.
It’s almost four in the morning when they finally finished the whole room and Regulus checks every cupboard twice and then one more time to be sure. They are lying in the bed, Regulus resting his head on James’ chest as James slowly traces his fingers across his back.
“I’m scared, James,” Regulus confess guiltily as it was the greatest sin he ever did. James squeezes his arm to let him know he is listening but doesn’t interrupt. “I’m scared that he will get hurt and it’s gonna be my fault.”
James can feel the hot tears on his chest, and it breaks his heart as always when Regulus is crying. “I don’t want to let him and you down. What… What if I will be a bad parent?”
James moves so he lies on his side next to Regulus. He tugs the few curls behind Regulus’ ear so he can fully see his face. “You will be a great parent, Reg.”
“How do you know that?”
“Because, my love, you want to be good.” He says and places a tender kiss on his cheek kissing away the tears.
“It’s not enough.”
“Oh, that’s everything. You will make mistakes, same as me. But the important part is that we will do the best we can. And that’s…” He kisses him again. “That’s enough.”

Books and stories
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 553 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: Hero
James is lying on the soft covers of the bed making complicated movements with his wand. He learned a spell where you can basically paint into the air, making the colourful dots swirl around, mix them together and separate again. It’s not useful other than it calms his mind. It captures all his attention for hours absolutely fascinated by the colours.
The only sound in the come-and-go room is the soft crackling of the fire in the fireplace at the back of the room and Regulus occasionally turning over a page in his book. James doesn't notice the sounds until one of them stops. That’s why he looks at Regulus. It was too long since the boy moved.
Regulus is sitting on the bed his back resting against the headboard. He is watching James, the book lying in his lap. Something is different. Regulus sometimes watches him with tenderness in his eyes. The tenderness James absolutely adores is not there now. No. James can see something else. Sadness, worry.
“What’s wrong, love?” He asks snapping Regulus out of his head.
“Nothing,” Regulus answers immediately. “Just thinking.”
“Yeah, don’t do that. It makes you sad, I can see it.” James flops himself on his stomach resting his head on his folded arms. “You don’t like the book?”
Regulus looks down to his lap. “No, it’s nice. It’s just… the main character reminds me of you.”
James raises an eyebrow with interest. “Is he hot?”
Regulus barks out a startled laugh. “It’s a book, James.” The other boy rolls his eyes. “Oh, come on. Don’t tell me your wild imagination is not providing any images. Okay, at least tell me what he is like.”
“Lots of courage, high moral principles, show-off, but not a single self-preservation brain cell in his head.” Regulus deadpans.
“He sounds like a good fella,” James smirks. “So is the hero of the story?”
“Yes,” Regulus answers and James can see it again. The sadness in Regulus’ eyes as he watches him. James doesn’t understand. Isn’t that the point? The higher achievement to be the hero?
“He will never be happy, James,” Regulus explains. “He will sacrifice everything to save the world. He will tear himself apart just to do the right thing. He will probably end up completely alone in the world he doesn’t know anymore, or he will die saving it. It’s tragic really.”
James frowns. “But he will save them. Why wouldn’t he be happy? Maybe you read just sad books, Reggie, the books I’ve read have happy endings.” He tries to lighten the mood, but Regulus just gives him a pity look.
“Do they have a happy ending or does the story stop at the right point not showing what comes next? When you give everything up, what is there left?” James doesn’t like this conversation. He can see Regulus having a point, heros always get hurt. But that’s their destiny, isn’t it? They serve the greater good so no one else gets hurt. They bare it so others don’t have to. James would, he knows it in his soul.
“It’s just a story, Reg.”
“Aren’t we all stories in the end?” Regulus ask and James knows this conversation is something he will remember forever for some reason.
“Yeah.” He breaks out. “So, let’s make it a good one, hm?”

Trouble
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 412 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: Makeup
CW: Implied NSFW
James is in trouble. In a big trouble. And it's entirely Regulus’ fault because this boy just marched into the Gryffindor common room wearing tight black jeans, a crop top and make-up. He has a long black eyeliner and smoky black eyeshadows. And if it's not driving James absolutely insane.
He is positive that he's dying. Regulus looks so hot. When he finally snaps from his shock he manages to say “You look amazing, Reg.”
“I know. And you will too.” Regulus answers and lifts up his bag full of makeup. This is the moment James’ brain stopped functioning because Regulus proceeded to climb onto his lap and now he is applying the same eyeliner on him.
James wants to touch him, squeeze his hips in his hands, and kiss every inch of his body. But they are in a full common room. All of them preparing for a party in the forbidden forest. They are out as a couple only shortly so they decided to give everyone (Sirius) time to get used to it without being overly affectionate.
He is really trying to think about anything else but the weight of Regulus’ body on him. James takes a sharp inhale when Regulus tightly grabs his chin tilting his head to the side so he can now apply a red line next to the black eyeliner.
“James!” Sirius hisses at him across the room in warning.
He groans in despair. “I'm not doing anything.”
“You are! I can see it in your eyes.”
Regulus the menace who is well aware of what he is doing to James chuckles. “I'm trying!” James responses.
“Try harder.”
James looks up at Regulus who is smirking. He leans a little bit closer wiggling on James’ lap and whispers to him in a low voice. “Yeah James, try harder.”
James briefly considers if being murdered by his best friend is worth snogging Regulus on the spot. The moment he decides this would be a great way to go Regulus gives him a quick kiss and climbs off his lap. “Done.”
James catches his wrist and spins him around when all of them are walking out of the room. He presses him against the wall trapping him there hidden from the eyes of others. He captures the boy’s lips in a bruising kiss that leaves them both panting. “Just wait until we are alone and I will show you how hard I can try,” he says and walks out of the room with absolutely smug-looking Regulus right behind him.
