"So, why are you sitting over here by your lonesome?" Klavier asked, putting his elbow up on the table and his chin in his palm. His blue eyes were fixed on Apollo’s face, alight with something that Apollo couldn't decipher. His pupils were also a little larger than normal, a sign that Klavier had also been partaking in the free alcohol. 

"Because I'm a boring grump who doesn't like to dance," Apollo said, setting his empty glass on the table next to him.

"That's a shame," Klavier said, his lips tugging at the corners into an almost mischievous smile. 

Apollo raised a suspicious brow. "What are you plotting, Gavin?"

"Nichts, nichts," Klavier answered, waving his hand. But Apollo didn't believe him for a second. "Though, you might want another glass of champagne."

"Why?"

Klavier grinned, the apples of his cheeks flushed a dazzling pink. "Because I am dragging you to the dance floor with me whether you like it or not."

Excerpt: “Is he hitting on you?”

Apollo nearly spits out his food. “What? No!” The implication that this meeting could be anything less than innocent makes Apollo’s face flame. Anything less than innocent with Klavier Gavin… Apollo’s brain unhelpfully conjures the exposed expanse of taut, tanned chest that Klavier shows off in the courtroom, then it stupidly reaches even farther back for a memory of Klavier’s toned arms, sweat glistening off of the roiling muscle as he plays his guitar on stage, that very first night that Apollo had seen The Gavinners perform.

“Oh my god,” Clay breaks his reverie. “It makes sense. You, trying to hide it and everything— you’re hitting on him!”

“What?” Apollo gapes. Like a moron, a bit of spinach falls out of his mouth, and he plucks it off of his lap. “I am not!”

“Don’t try to hide it! I saw the way your eyes went all glassy there for a second,” Clay points out, and Apollo wants to die.

Preview: There’s a knowing look in Klavier’s eyes, like he understands Apollo a little better than either of them expects. “You’re not really the poetic type, Herr Forehead. I can easily imagine you worrying over your soulmate being a romantic.”

And well, Apollo did worry over the type of person his soulmate would be, but he’s too disoriented with the evening to think much about his answer. “I did worry. Actually, I wished that my soulmate could just be my cat.”

Klavier laughs, a throaty sound that catches Apollo completely off-guard. “Your soulmate is one lucky person,” he teases.

Apollo flushes again. “That doesn’t really matter in a relationship, does it? Love has nothing to do with romance.”

Klavier puts his chin in his palm again and leans forward, looking up at Apollo through his eyelashes. It’s perhaps the most calculated look Apollo has ever received— he can feel the way it’s meant to absolutely pierce him through. “Now there’s a sentence made to break a romantic’s heart.”
