My partner and I had never booked a vacation this early in the year, but the end of 2022 and the first few months of 2023 were so stressful that we noped off to Fuerteventura for a week. I finally tested negative on the morning before the flight, so that was a close call. Was still a little weak, but improving every day.

I had the Kolarichrome IR filter with me and took a lot of "what if plants were red" photos. I love this island and infrared photography, so to be finally able to shoot this type of image with only one filter and next to no additional processing is a dream come true.

That week was maybe the most relaxing and visually imprinting vacation we've ever had. I always soak in every moment there, but this time, it was even more pronounced. At some point in 2024 or 2025, we'd like to stay on the island for four to six weeks, really getting to explore things on our own there. <3

Part two of Red Plant Fuerteventura! :)

It’s astounding how well natural colors are preserved, despite the red channel shenanigans of the filter. As far as the info online goes, the filter keeps red light from passing through and tricks the camera into substituting the missing reds with near-infrared radiation. This only works with modified cameras which allow infrared to reach the sensor, but man does it work well. A little bit of Lightroom color balance is enough to set the neutrals to near-natural, and tadaa, a visually pleasing approximation of how the world, or in this case, Fuerteventura, would look if plants were red <3

Week 3 C&PSD - Cinematography

The science of infrared - For this week's blog, I thought I would explain the science behind capturing infrared on a digital sensor. As you may well know, light is made up of multiple wavelengths, and that we can only see a tiny fraction of it in what we call "visible light" - this is the colours of the rainbow, ranging from violet at 400 nanometers (nm) to red at 750nm. On the shorter wavelength side, we have cosmic rays and x-rays, and on the longer side we have things like microwaves, radio, and what we're interested in - infrared. Infrared starts at the top of red and stops at around 1 micron (1,000nm)

In order to capture this not normally visible wavelength, we must remove what is called the IR blocking filter, sometimes called a hot mirror. This filter blocks out IR light normally as it is undesirable for essentially all photo/video applications - however, by removing this filter, we allow the camera to capture this light, as well as all of the visible light we could before - this is known as a "full spectrum conversion" and can be done to most cameras for a fee.

However, this full spectrum "look" is not wanted as it makes everything soft (not in a good way either) as the camera cannot focus effectively. To combat this, we can use IR filters, which block out all light bar a specific wavelength. You can get filters that still allow some visible light to come through (such as 590nm and 680nm) but if you want "true" infrared, anything above 750nm will do - 850nm is a very popular choice
