Hear me out, okay: Pete’s breakdown in episode 13 has a lot to do with Tankhun. 

I know!!! I don’t want to think bad of Tankhun either! Tankhun is so earnest about Pete being missing - and even perhaps reveals too much of his own sharp intuition to Porsche, because as far as Porsche knew to this point, Tankhun doesn’t keep track of anything but his dramas. Which is how it’s supposed to seem. Which brings me to the next scene with Pete: 

Allow me a little play-by-play commentary, because damnit, I can’t take Vegas’s face in episode 13. The way horror dawns across his face as Pete says, “I’ve lost my humanity. No - I never had it. I don’t exist. I have no feelings. I’m useless.” All the while forcing Vegas to hold a knife to his throat. 

It’s the way Vegas utters, “Pete.” Helplessly, like it slipped out before he even knew what he was saying. Sexy, Vegas called him. Strong. “It’s no fun if you don’t choose.” He wants to know someone chooses him. 

But Pete - “I don’t exist”, he’s not allowed to have feelings, or a choice. “I didn’t like it,” Pete whispers to himself - a confession. Private, secret. Pete asked himse, “Why didn’t I say no?” Because in his job, in his life, he’s not allowed to say no - not allowed to have a voice. And for all that Pete may have wanted Vegas, he didn’t want him - like this. No choice. No humanity.

This is Pete, unfettered. Raw. Unmasked. And Vegas can’t believe how blind he’s been. His mouth falters around silent vowels as his throat works to gasp in air. 

It’s the way they wrestle for grasp of the knife, the way Pete screams “Let go!” and Vegas backs away instantly, hands raised and voice cracking - “Pete. Pete.”

“We can start over,” he says, “Just you and me.”

But here it is, the line that wrecked me:

“Need me? For emotional projection, like a pet with no feelings?” I initially read it as protection, but the implication is the same.

There is a parallel here between Vegas and Tankhun. I can’t help but think about Pete, and Arm and Pol, and how their job is laughed off as “babysitting”. Keeping the mad former heir happy and safe, emotionally stable in a realm of escapism. Just see how distressed Tankhun is without Pete (but, my love for Tankhun angrily whispers, he is distressed for Pete - although Pete doesn’t know this).

And isn’t that what the safehouse has been for Vegas? An escape? Where he has kept Pete like a pet. And isn’t that similar to how Tankhun keeps his bodyguards? Leashed to the newest kdrama. Think forward to how Tankhun makes literal dolls of Arm and Pol, to offer at Pete’s “funeral.” 

With all that context, I keep thinking about Pete walking in, drunk, on Kinn and Porsche. He latched onto the easiest source of distraction, of emotional sedation, of relaxation for himself and Tankhun: alcohol. If he had truly had fun, he could’ve just gone to bed (and unknowingly left KinnPorsche to their semi-public sex kink). But he came back out, to talk to Porsche. To tell him of his evening. It sounds more and more desperate and lonely, the more I think about it.

So Pete feels like a glorified pet, and Pete has seen exactly how the lifespan of Vegas’s pets expire: in a cage. They are loved, but it is a desperate kind, born of anxiety. (My father had me care for them, Vegas said. All of them died, one by one.) And he just - can’t do it anymore. It was one thing, to endure emotionally. But physically? Giving himself up bodily to Vegas? It finally broke him.

[”What the heck is this?!”]

Vegas’s flinch though as Pete lashes out. God, it’s a traumafest up in here.

And then - god, Build does such a good job at displaying the pure anguish Pete feels at attacking Vegas, touch flittering over him in apology while at the same time patting him down for the handcuff key.

Because at his core, Pete cares. And Pete - Pete knows Vegas knew that. That’s why he couldn’t accept Vegas’s plea - “Okay, Pete, just - promise me you won’t leave me.” It felt like a manipulation.

But Pete finally makes a choice. He chooses himself. He chooses self-preservation. 

And he could just run, let’s not forget that. He could run. But he doesn’t. He goes back to the main family, because it’s what he knows. It’s safe. I suddenly realise how little Pete has. Bodyguard to the main family - that’s the only identity we really know. The only identity he knows.

He chooses to go back. That is the first choice Pete will make for himself. 

The second will come much later - when he chooses his heart over his duty. Vegas was right, when he said his tattoo was a joke. It was just another shackle. Maybe he could get it replaced. I’m sure Vegas or Porsche know a guy.

The important point is: Pete chooses what his heart wants. And despite knowing all his flaws, he chooses Vegas anyway. Because he’s seen the good in him. 

“It’s no fun if you don’t choose.” You’re right, Pete thinks. And I choose you. 

...

But I can’t just leave it there. I have to circle back to Tankhun, because I can’t smear him like that. Honestly, I think Tankhun hides a lot from his bodyguards. Pete, unable to see the depths of him, feels toyed with. But Arm - I think Arm gets it. We see in the final episode, Arm and Tankhun have developed a toy together. It’s fun, it’s explosive, it’s unhinged yet makes an impact. Arm can see Tankhun for who he really is: the former heir, with all his faculties and training, burdened by trauma but not shackled by it. Not since Porsche came along. But ultimately, I think it’s a side of himself Tankhun only feels safe allowing his family to see, lest the minor family come for him again. 

“He’s nosy,” Tankhun tells Porchay about Kim. “He gets that from me.”

Kim certainly is nosy. Conspiracy-theorist pinboard nosy. Tracking a dozen leads at a time nosy. He got that from Tankhun. 

Let that sink in. 

Then remember again, how Tankhun worried for Pete, and went to Kinn and Porsche - and Porsche - to air his worries. He only lets family see beyond his mask.

Again and again, I keep seeing these small signs: Porsche is family now.

Rewrite: Starting over

Why?

Don't think about the parallels, don't think about Pete having an actual answer this time around, don't think about how "I can't run off to anywhere" isn't just Pete choosing Vegas, it's Pete deciding to give himself no other choice. He's not just refusing to run off, he's not allowing it to be an option. Handing the rope to Vegas, all over again.

If you run now, I'm alright with that.

Don't think about Vegas being unconditionally selfless for the first time and giving Pete a way out anyway. Don't think about how this is better than all of the apologies because they're literally rewriting their lowest moment, going back and correcting all the wrongs of the past in order to move foward.

I got nothing left.

For sure don't think about this fucking line getting reused. Reframed. Don't think about the way it was originally Pete who was split open, hurt and empty, the fight drained out of him. How this was Pete with nothing left to give. Don't think about how now the fight is out of Vegas. How his will to keep taking is gone.

I don't want to be your burden. I just want to follow my heart.

Don't think about this confirmation that staying isn't just what Pete needs, what Vegas needs, it's what they both want.

From now on, you're no longer my pet. You're the most important person in my life.

Don't think about how it's so important for to them that they have this conversation in full before they even consider touching each other. Don't think about the way healing is important to them. Don't think about how KP said "Can we start all over?" and VP went ahead and did this.

i don't understand most of your analysis about the dynamic between Vegas and Pete anymore at this point. you act as if episode 13 was a twist compared to the previous and confirms that there is no love between them and such, but that's not what i've seen?

also, to address all of your long-ass analysis about why Pete is NOT a masochist : yes guys, the show never implied that, no need to overanalyse it. we took that info from the novel, were it is explicitly stated by Pete himself.

having read the novel, while watching the show i personally have felt like certain things they said were hints to it, but sure, it's not actually implied and I would have never thought of that from the series alone.

however, to get to the point, i stand firm on this: they love each other. not in your ideal romantic way, that's for sure. but they need each other, they can only be their true self with each other (as soon as Pete got back we saw a side of him that we hadn't for the past three episodes. he put the mask back on), they understand each other, they desire each other.

it's not romantic, it's not healthy, it's not easy, it's not right. they both are criminals, murderers, they are able to beat someone to death and cold-heartedly shoot people. what the fuck did you expect? smh

also, don't compare their dynamic to Porsche and Kinn's. Vegas and Pete have no "major family member privilege". they aren't even on the same side, they are almost enemies.

There is one thing (good two in all, but they come together) that I didn't mention yesterday. Well, I'm very curious about the role Kim has to play in the last episode (we know he has to beat someone up; but will he be in a big fight?), Because it looks like all his Sherlocking was such a curiosity and nothing it does not follow. NOTHING. I wish something came out, but I don't see what considering how the last episode ended. And the second thing. For some reason, the fact that Porsche hasn't reacted at all to Chay's blue hair has spilled my cup of bitterness, and I'm even more upset that the show is treating him (Chay) like a pushover. Ah, and was I disappointed that the studio scene was a retrosception - very much. I like these characters and that's probably why it hurts me so much that what they do and what they go through doesn't make sense and is so, so, so, so, so unnecessary. And in them all problems related to changing the plot accumulate.

well that was horrible i hated like 80% of the episode in terms of overarching plot/solving the mistery unresolved kimchay? i like it vegaspete? well they are unhinged and fucked up either way let them be unhinged and fuckewd up together kinnporsche? the boat scene had me dreading a proposal, i really thought kinn had slipped a ring into that drink but thankfully not they are still horny and in love i'm okay with that arm and pol are still alive that's good gun dead is lovely korn still alive is the worst tankhun is being the best at everything as usual i love him but otherwise? what the fuck?!?!? i hate it i really do this was horrible nonsense i have yet to read other people's opinions so maybe there are some things i'll change my mind on but the nampheung thing is and will remain the worst plot twist holy shit i hate that so fucking much for so many reasons i can't put into words it just feels wrong and arhghdskjdskdw i hated it! sigh... did not expect to dislike the finale episode so much, it was entertaining i liked some bits but what it means in terms of plot... no thanks you can take it back i don't want any of it

Aurora update, May 13, 2024: 80% less shenanigans

This will be only a brief update, as I'm dealing with a local deadline issue at the moment. But for those who're interested: the current spate of auroral episodes seems to be over.

The auroral oval of "likely seeing" has pretty much vanished at the moment, except for that little smear of "quiet aurora" over Alaska and the Yukon.

The Kp index is at sorta-3-to-4 at the moment, which generally indicates a "quiet aurora" time.

Our favorite troublemaker, active sunspot region AR3664, continues to make trouble even as it exits stage left. Over yesterday evening and the early morning hours it coughed up a few more cosmic hairballs—a mixed bag of M- and X-class flares. (In fact, as I write this I see that it's just popped off another one, a "strong" M6.66 [...seriously? Hi there @neil-gaiman!], about half an hour ago. Truly this is a diva among sunspot regions.)

It's apparently shrinking, and has lost some spots, but I remain really interested to see what things are going to look like when this region comes around again from the Sun's other side in two weeks or so.

...So for the time being, it looks like those of us who've been watching this drama unfold can sit back and relax a bit, and wait to see what happens next.

Alright guys, temporarily bursting out of hiatus to talk about this show because DAMN if there's anything we know works in BL-land, it's like underworld AU (hello History3: Trapped and KP lmao), and even better if this underworld AU has like DILFs and two familiar actors who WERE FORCED APART in their previous roles and who knows if that'll happen again BUT!

Without further ado...

CP 1: BAD BOY + GOOD STUDENT

Fan Zherui x Bai Zongyi: Fan Zherui, 25 years old, is a gang member who turned to the gangs due to family problems, and one day when he's injured, Bai Zongyi saves him, he falls in love with him and decides to leave the gang, but things go awry when his enemy Zhang Teng (played by Wayne, see CP 3) comes after for revenge. Bai Zongyi is a good student, your cutest boy next door, who is independent and has some PTSD from when he was beaten up in the rain - meets Fan Zherui and for once realises what it means to be loved, to have someone to care for him and more. TWO MEOW MEOWS?! Anyway, Bai Zongyi, according to MDL, will take the rap for some fight for Zherui, and then end up in jail, but then very weirdly the official description says that CP 2's Eddie ends up in jail for Bai Zongyi, I'm a tad confused but WHATEVER we will find out when we watch the damn show.

CP 2: ADOPTED SON OF GANG BOSS + CHILDHOOD "YOUNGER BROTHER" PUPPY

Chen Yi x Eddie (Ai Di): They both grew up together with Eddie as the younger 'brother', with Chen Yi being 'adopted' by gang boss Chen Dongyang after his parents, also gang members die to protect the boss. Eddie has been chasing after him for the longest time, and has a sad family background as his parents are druggies and he was only able to grow up well under the protection of Chen Dongyang, and he only listens to Chen Yi. UNREQUITED-REQUITED love, but Eddie sees how Chen Yi feels deeply about Chen Dongyang (I don't know what that means from the description LMAO like??) and decides to leave Chen Yi, and somehow get embroiled in something and ends up in jail for Bai Zongyi. Chen Yi is only just understanding his own feelings for Eddie when Eddie literally goes to jail DOGBLOOD MUCH?! Anyway they will reunite 4 years later.

A-Jun is Zhang Teng's like follower??? Has been following him since he joined the gang and both fears and reveres him, and Zhang Teng is just angry ball of angst and revenge and vengeance, if you couldn't tell from Wayne's face. I cannot believe they're in a setting! WHERE THEY MIGHT NOT GET GOOD ENDINGS WAS SALT SEPARATION NOT ENOUGH TELL ME YALL

CP 3.5: DILFS? "CHILDHOOD FRIENDS" DADS???

Friends yall do not understand how I feel about these two uncles. IF you've ever watched Taiwan family dramas, these two, especially the one on the left Xie Chengjun, is a fucking LEGEND, he's in EVERY SINGLE FAMILY DRAMA all hundreds of episodes of them, he's literally like THE dude to idolise he's been paired up with EVERY SINGLE POPULAR GODDESS ACTRESS in Taiwan - I KID YOU NOT I GREW UP WATCHING HIM on OUR CHANNELS EVERY SINGLE DAY ACROSS 5-7 POPULAR FAM DRAMAS it's been like 20 years ISTG.

Anyway I'm NOT SURE if they are actually going to be a CP at all BUT (1) at press conference this week, these two made kissy faces at each other sooooo...?

Zhou Minglei grew up with Chen Dongyang protecting him as he was a weak and sickly child, so they're childhood friends, and he becomes super unhappy and upset that Chen Dongyang begins to protect and pays attention to Chen Yi ;-; LIKE WHAT IS THIS DESCRIPTION? Okay we could think of this professionally as like two bosses of a gang with their interests at stake BUT THE DESCRIPTION?! And ok Chen Dongyang on the right, he's obviously gang boss, and he relies on Zhou Minglei a lot to fix his problems for him. EXCUSE ME?!

The main CPs (1 & 2) are torn apart in a particular fight, and they will reunite 4 years later LET'S SEE HOW THAT GOES THANK YOU.

The last few minutes of episode 13 really could've been so much more: Some evidence of Arthee being an agent of Korn's, rather than just a posthumous revelation. Maybe Chan knowing it all along. Porsche worrying about being in the lion's den even as Kinn opens up to him, and being torn. Maybe asking Kinn, or even Tankhun, or Kim, if they trust their father. Porchay questioning Porsche's decision to up and run in the early morning. Seeing Porsche lie awake and wait hours for those first rays of light, before detangling himself from Kinn - so deeply asleep that he's easy to move, no longer dozing on hairtrigger, ready to reach for a gun at the slightest twitch. Vegas worrying for Pete, also still in the "clutches" of the main family. Kim and Tankhun being visibly worried, but Kinn (and Pete) oddly calm. Trusting. Kinn and Pete sharing a knowing look. Porsche's headaches and flashbacks - there could've been so much more to this, spread out over multiple episodes. The way Porsche's reality starts to crumble as Arthee refutes one of his defining pillars of reality - "Your mum and dad weren't killed in a car accident." All the clues that must've led Kinn and Pete to Porsche and Vegas. The trust Kinn must somewhat have to let Porsche ride off again with Vegas. The way that, despite everything, Arthee, dying, reaches for Porsche's face.

I keep coming back to this note that Porsche left.

Kinn: "I'll find every answer for you." (Episode 12)

Did Porsche pull words from Kinn as a reassurance that he does love and trust him, even though he's keeping a secret? Even though he left?

Like saying "you promised me answers, but I need you to let me find them myself."

Note: "I'll come back soon." (Episode 13)

Kinn: "No matter what happens, you must return to me." // "When you're done, return it to me. The gun, and yourself." (Episode 7)

It feels too similar to be a coincidence, doesn't it? Am I reading into translated dialogue way too much?

Is Porsche finally learning the art of subtlety, after living in Kinn's world all this time? Is it finally clicking? I love the idea that he's been picking up on Kinn's messages this whole episode and now he's sending one back.

Porsche + Kinn: "I love you." // "I love you, too." (Episode 13)

To me it feels like Porsche has been deliberately building this consistency, this reassurance for Kinn. It feels very intentional that in a three sentence note, I can find three potential callbacks to previous dialogue. Rule of three, anyone?

Telling Kinn that even though he's keeping secrets, he's not like Tawan. When Porsche said "I love you," he meant it.

Hey everyone, I think I’m out of tumblr jail. Can someone tell me if this is showing up in the tags? Also, I have A THING to say.

Y’all remember this show?

Wanna know something interesting? Disney had a rule called “65 and DONE.” This meant that, no matter HOW popular, a show was only allowed 65 episodes before it it was finished and the studio moved on to another project.

Well, Kim Possible reached that 65 number, AND had a movie finale to finish it off. It was over. DONE. It had it’s popular run, at good amount of episodes, AND a large scale finale to end all things.

BUT!

Fans were NOT done.

Before facebook, before instagram, before twitter and TikTok. Fans all over the world, sent THOUSANDS OF LETTERS to Disney. So many, that DISNEY BROKE IT’S OWN RULE, to bring it back for a full FOURTH SEASON! I’m not talking 13 episodes to placate the fans. KP had a full 22 episodes.

So if this show can be OVER but still RISE From the ashes, I don’t see why ROTTMNT can’t! I know everyday the fandom feels like it’s shrinking, like more people are moving on, but impossible things have happened before.
