Chay, Hope, and “The New Hunger”
An unnecessary metatextual analysis by an excited English MA queer.
So it all started with this shot from Episode 7 of KinnPorsche:
Tumblr media
I zoomed in on the novel next to Chay’s desk out of curiosity and discovered that it was The New Hunger by Isaac Marion. Not a super old book by any means, and definitely one that Chay would realistically be reading.
Also a brief cameo that lets this single comedic shot FORESHADOW SO MUCH OF CHAY’S TRAGIC PLOTLINE without likely intending to do that at all.
Tumblr media
Because The New Hunger, published in 2013, is a functional prequel to Marion’s 2010 novel Warm Bodies.
Warm Bodies is by far one of the most beautifully written and engaging re-interpretations of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” probably ever written (and I spent 3 summers at Shakespeare camp, so this approval is not coming from a casual fan perspective). There are zombies, apocalyptic drama, Daddy issues, and a LOT of stuff about not losing hope in the face of annihilation, loss, and loneliness.
R spends most of the novel talking TO HIMSELF and coping with HOW TO BE ALONE. He is doing exactly what Chay is forced to do for survival: Create his own joy and entertainment. He’s abandoned by the world around him and must fight at every turn to maintain a sense of agency, all while desperately clinging to the idea that hope is everywhere. Here are some of my favorite Warm Bodies quotes for perspective:
“It frustrates and fascinates me that we'll never know for sure, that despite the best efforts of historians and scientists and poets, there are some things we'll just never know. What the first song sounded like. How it felt to see the first photograph. Who kissed the first kiss, and if it was any good.”
“What wonderful thing didn’t start out scary?”
“You should always be taking pictures, if not with a camera then with your mind. Memories you capture on purpose are always more vivid than the ones you pick up by accident.”
“’What's wrong with people?’ she says, almost too quiet for me to hear. ‘Were they born with parts missing or did it [love] fall out somewhere along the way?’“
“The sky is blue. The grass is green. The sun is warm on our skin. We smile, because this is how we save the world. We will not let Earth become a tomb, a mass grave spinning through space. We will exhume ourselves. We will fight the curse and break it.”
“Deep under our feet the Earth holds its molten breath, while the bones of countless generations watch us and wait.”
BUT THEN YOU HAVE THE NEW HUNGER.
“Nothing is permanent. Not even the end of the world.”
“Enough white lies can scorch the earth black.”
“What happened? How did I get here? How could I have known that my choices mattered?”
“Crying. Expelling grief from the body in the form of salt water. What's its purpose? How did it evolve, and why are humans the only creatures on Earth that do it?”
He has not reached the point of exhumation yet.
Porchay must first be burned down. He must experience the hopelessness, loss, and devastation of betrayal first.
Like yeah, sure, this is a throwaway shot and someone on the set probably grabbed a handful of random books to use but HOLY FUCK they really could not have made a better (potentially) accidental choice!
Like... Jesus Christ in Heat do I love these books more than life itself. Warm Bodies is my second favorite book of all time and again, I read books for a living. You should go check them out if you like romance, comedy, zombies, or really just feeling good about the end of a novel. Isaac Marion will fundamentally change your life and the way you look at the world and it’s a wonderful experience.
But also the accidental foreshadowing of Porchay’s world being burnt up... of his memories being tainted and blackened by Kim’s lying and Porsche’s secrecy... Ugh it hurts. I am having some feelings in this Chili’s tonight.

Kim's Place in the Mafia: Novel vs Show
The one thing I can say without a doubt in my mind is that from the crumbs we get of Kim and Chay from the book and show, these two are obsessively in love with each other. So I'll say that now and get that squared away.
And I know, most of the fandom detest the book due to its problematic authors and will never read it, and that's completely valid. Furthermore, I will say now that the book is trash and hardly coherent at times. But as my favorite English scholar for Ancient Rome, Mary Beard, once said: "It's trash...but it's very valuable trash."
For what it's worth, reading the book at least once can provide a more nuanced understanding of why the showrunners made the changes they did in the show. The changes in and of themselves makes for a more cohesive story (SOO MUCH MORE COHESIVE), but it also goes without saying that a lot of the events in the show remain faithful to the novel, so in that regard, there is some merit to be had.
Finally, when I say the novel is "trash", I mean the narrative itself, not necessarily the translation (although it's not perfect by any means). If anything, I'm grateful for the translators who took the time to translate this novel into English, since translation is a thankless job most times in fandom (lookin' at you, MDZS). As I speak no Thai whatsoever, I can’t give an informed opinion on DAEMI's technical writing abilities, since I'm not a native speaker, nor am I the book's target audience.
But, I digress.
The more I reread the book (in all its trash glory), the more I find myself questioning Kim's views in regards to how he sees himself as part of a mafia family. 🤔
In the book, Kim is a lot more accepting of his place within the mafia, despite his initial tendencies of disappearing on his guards and staying away from the main house. In fact, that pretty much changes once Chay enters the picture.
Tumblr media
Gotta love a Kinn who's curious about his little bro's love life. XD
Kim is firmly settled into the fold of the family business (if that scene in the secret warehouse is anything to go by) and there’s a scene in the beginning of the book where Korn obligates all 3 sons to dress up in some fancy suits and visit their chocolate factory, since he’s particularly keen on getting it off the ground. This shows that although Kinn is set to inherit (in public, at least) the other two sons still have their duties to the family.
In fact, I will say that one of the most interesting things about reading the book is finding out that Kim's sleuthing is actually canon. Lol Granted, it's sleuthing more in regards to finding the mole and not really about Korn's game plan, but sleuthing nonetheless.
But in the show, his role within the family business and how he views it are a little bit more foggy because he has his musical career to keep him occupied, besides his sleuthing into Korn’s affairs. He’s not active in the way one would typically expect a member of the mafia to be (and who knows, this may be due to limited time constraints on the part of the showrunners), but he’s active within that sphere nonetheless.
And because of this, contrary to the general fandom consensus, I never really got the impression that Kim wanted to be out of the mafia, yknow? Personally, I think it’s too big of a leap to say him moving out = him not wanting to be in the mafia. Having that sort of character motivation wouldn't really make sense either, because then we would have had stronger hints of it, I think?
At the very least, by the end of the show, Kim--just like Chay--has more reasons to stay than not. The way I see it, Kim wanting to be out of the mafia would actually somewhat contradict his actions in the show.
Despite his effort in staying away from the mansion his father and brothers live in (and later on, Chay), Kim benefits from being a Theerapanyakul. We see this in a lot of different ways: the penthouse he lives in, the cars he drives (he gets his own set of the Maserati fleet, yo), his private studio, the freedom of movement he has in being able to easily get information (although this may be debatable), using Big as a gopher.
I highly doubt his career as a young musician is maintaining his luxurious lifestyle (perhaps only a part of it, like the fame); imo, there’s a calculated reason why BOC chose to keep the level of his fame as vague as possible. The way I see it, Kim moved out and pursued music simply because, due to his unique position of being the youngest son (aka the spare), he just had the luxury to do so.
If he truly wanted out of the mafia, I'm firmly on the camp that he could have done so already. We've seen in both the show and the book that unlike Kinn who's constrained by his duties, Kim does have the freedom to disappear, even to the point that it's to his detriment at times. Lol
Maybe I can go even further, and suggest that perhaps the reason he chose to move out is to get a better vantage point of the circumstances surrounding his father's schemes and the ongoing tides of power. Kinda like, he has to move away from the trees, in order to see the entire forest.
I wouldn't go so far as to say he wants power for himself (although this idea would be fun to entertain, especially within the context that he now has Chay in his life to protect), but again, being a member (a high-ranking one, at that) of the Theerapanyakul family benefits him in a lot of different ways.
In one of BOC's interviews and then in Jeff's goodbye message during the last KPWT, he mentioned something about Pond changing up Kim's character in order to make Jeff Satur shine. Idk about y'all, but that's quite a touching gesture, and one I definitely approve of, whilst I get a better understanding of the similarities and differences between novel!Kim and show!Kim. It's obvious from the show that besides changing Kim's maturity level and changing his image from a fuck boi to a cool prince, giving him a passion for music definitely humanized him and served as a way to balance out the other two love stories.
But be that as it may, although we the audience don't know as to what extent Pond changed Kim's character to better fit the story, at the very least maintaining Kim's position as a legitimate contender in the politics of the mafia world remains consistent in both the book and show.
Whether that observation lines up with the idea that he wants out of the mafia though, is entirely up to you. XD

To this day nothing can ever come close to Pete jumping when Vegas touches his shoulder. Within just a few seconds it foreshadows their relationship and manages to show us their true personalities. Vegas is cunning and will appear friendly but he always demonstrates his power and dominance indicating his inferiority complex - in this scene, he touches Pete not as a friendly gesture but to assert his dominance and "push" Pete out of the way. Pete looks submissive and polite and seems to fear Vegas but he is courageous and doesn't back down as he is the only one to address Vegas directly and remind him that this place is for bodyguards not the bosses. It indicates his unbreakable will and inner strength which makes him face Vegas in the torture scene without fear.

I keep coming back to this note that Porsche left.
Note: "I need to find an answer." (Episode 13)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kinn: "I'll find every answer for you." (Episode 12)
Did Porsche pull words from Kinn as a reassurance that he does love and trust him, even though he's keeping a secret? Even though he left?
Like saying "you promised me answers, but I need you to let me find them myself."
Note: "I'll come back soon." (Episode 13)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kinn: "No matter what happens, you must return to me." // "When you're done, return it to me. The gun, and yourself." (Episode 7)
It feels too similar to be a coincidence, doesn't it? Am I reading into translated dialogue way too much?
Is Porsche finally learning the art of subtlety, after living in Kinn's world all this time? Is it finally clicking? I love the idea that he's been picking up on Kinn's messages this whole episode and now he's sending one back.
Note: "Love you." (Episode 13)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Porsche + Kinn: "I love you." // "I love you, too." (Episode 13)
To me it feels like Porsche has been deliberately building this consistency, this reassurance for Kinn. It feels very intentional that in a three sentence note, I can find three potential callbacks to previous dialogue. Rule of three, anyone?
Telling Kinn that even though he's keeping secrets, he's not like Tawan. When Porsche said "I love you," he meant it.

Kinnporsche Cast + Astrology
AKA: Holy Water Signs, Batman AKA: a collection of semi-coherent ramblings abt the KPTS cast and their astrological charts
Putting aside the fact that I don’t know anyone’s rising signs (which is extremely annoying for me, personally), as a triple water, I’m obsessed with the amount of water in this cast's charts.
By age we have:
Mile - January 5, 1992 (30) - Capricorn (all earth/fire like wow love that moon/sun in Cap & Mars in Sag (Pluto in Scorpio))
Tong - January 26, 1992 (30) - Aquarius  (moon in Scorpiooooo)
Ping - November 28, 1992 (29) - Sagittarius (mercury scorpio, mars cancer)
Nodt - August 7, 1993 (28) - Leo (mercury & venus in Cancer)
Apo - February 24, 1994 (28) - Pisces  (moon, Leo; venus, Pisces, mostly water/air this bb)
Build - June 4, 1994 (28) - Gemini  (mercury & venus in Cancer, mostly water)
JJ - June 28, 1994 (28) - Cancer (holy shit waterboy moon in Pisces, mercury in Cancer)
Perth - July 6, 1994 (28) - Cancer (ooh moon in Gemini)
Jeff Satur - March 6, 1995 (27) - Pisces (moon in taurus, adorable)
Us - September 10, 1996 (25) - Virgo (no water signs incredible)
Job - September 22, 1996 (25) - Virgo (no water signs 2.0)
Bas - April 9, 1997 (25) - Aries (no water signs 3.0)
Pong - June 23, 1997 (25) - Cancer (mostly air wow, but venus in Cancer too)
Bible - December 25, 1997 (24) - Capricorn (omfg moon in scorpio)
Ta - February 23, 2000 (22) - Pisces (moon in Libra oh this makes so much sense)
Barcode - August 4, 2004 (17) - Leo (moon in pisces of fucking course)
For their sun signs that breaks down to:
6 Water (no Scorpio)
4 Earth (no Taurus)
4 Fire
2 Air
Straight up over half of them have a Sun/Moon in water (9 in total -- 3 Sun in Pisces, 3 Sun in Cancer; 2 Moon in Pisces, and 2 Moon in Scorpio (JJ overlaps sun-Cancer, Moon-Pisces))
But when you look at their prominent placements -- here, in lieu of their rising sign, I’m using a top 3 of Sun/Moon/Venus -- there are only FIVE (5) without a water sign in there.  Those 5 are: Mile, Ping, Us, Job, and Bas.  (love that Us/Job/Bas are also in a little grouping of their own in birth order too, not related, but cute).
Aside from the overwhelming amount of water in their collective charts, individual observations include:
Apo & Mile being perfectly contrasting-- Apo predominantly Water/Air, Mile predominantly Earth/Fire.
Mile's top 5 being 2 Capricorn+3 Sagittarius I love that for him.
Barcode & Jeff have shockingly balanced charts element wise -- both have 2-3 of each sign, I’m fascinated by this. What is that balance like, boys?
Not me still trying to pull together a complete collection of Jeff crying gifs/pics bc that boy is a ~Pisces~
Bible is basically ALL AIR (Aquarius, specifically) aside from his Sun/Moon, his Mars in Aquarius seems especially obvious now that I know, and that + his Sun in Capricorn really pulls his entire ~aura~ together.  Many interests & the will to actually do them.
Build’s chart is SO WATERY and Tong is SO EARTHY, their entire dynamic makes so much sense very balanced/complimentary, + them being the only 2 air signs
Did any of this have a point?  Absolutely not.  Except fascination.

1. 3. And 6 for choose violence ask game <3
Character that everyone gets wrong
dear beloveds please don't murder me for this but... kim. obviously this is an exaggeration, there are a lot of people who get him right lol. but maybe it's partly the polarization of the fandom that contributes to this? he's often reduced to either extremely dominant & aggressive, or infantilized to the point he's unrecognizably weak and stupid lol. i'm super picky with kim characterization, so i'm not saying these portrayals are wrong wrong, just that they don't fit my understanding of his character
3. screenshot or description of worst take you've seen
im uhhh hesitant to answer this one honestly after everything. there have been a lot of bad takes, but in general i think...like.. the problem is less with the character analysis and more with the, inflexibility? i guess? people can interpret characters in wildly different ways, but it becomes a problem when they present those interpretations in a way that doesn't leave room for disagreement or other ideas? like it's not the end of the world for someone to say that they don't think kim loved chay, and that his behavior with chay was all manipulation, but when they act like kim is incapable of love that isn't an act of control, and that everyone who disagrees with them is stupid or incapable of media literacy? yeah. awful take. objectively incorrect
6. which ship fans are the most annoying?
so like. maybe this doesn't count as kpts, but the cast rpf shippers. specifically bbb and jbc. like. jfc my dudes. i can't even articulate my irritation and exhaustion lmao
thank you so much for the ask! hopefully my responses weren't too vague lol

Why do you think Mike didn’t go to Taipei? Also I’m overthinking that dinner post right before but Apo wasn’t with him but what if he was? 👀
who's Mike ? 🤣 jk... the curse of Mild's name... I mean Mile 😛
a few reasons, all of which are business driven and not emotionally driven:
1) the number one being that Mile is CEO of another company 🤷🏻‍♀️ they left on a Thursday morning and were there all day Friday, two business days. he probably did the cost-benefit analysis of opportunity and going did not come out on top. KPWT was planned far in advance and there's actually multiple fan photos of Mile taking calls even at the airport
2) obviously Dior had him at the pop up so it's not like Dior didn't want him. NextGen Fashion Awards (Harper's Bazaar SG) is a fan theory but Mile had GNR tickets. He and Apo also had a run of like 4 events in that week and I think he popped up at the Tattoo Colour concert during that time period with a backstage pass so probably there was work that was BOC new year event related. Finally it was off handedly revealed to fans that Bvlgari invited Mile first but BOC claimed he was busy and Build went. a lot of reporters thought Mile was there 😅
three data points is a pattern... I'd say he's fine doing fashion things like the Dior event with Apo but sitting for a fashion show or standing in front of a storefront and having his photos taken might not be what he values for his entertainment career, especially if it takes a lot of time (involving travel)
it's not that Mile doesn't value fashion or his modelling career, but remember he booked the Maserati sponsorship for KPTS on his own before KPTS was even off the ground. He knows what his modelling contract is worth but it just might not be his main focus
3) in terms of making contacts and networking, he probably considered the cost/benefit trade off, but also if the goal is to have a contact with Dior/the Taiwan magazines, then Apo (or Pond because Pond went too) can do that kind of introduction.
tbh I'm not sure if Pond went for a specific reason but his presence felt a lot like event manager behavior where you're on the ground for the event. Mile delegating and prioritizing how to use his (and Apo's) time most efficiently seems like executive-level behavior. (which is ironic because Pond is supposed to be BOC's CEO so... 🤷🏻‍♀️)
4) now that I take a step back and think about it, I'm wondering if it's more lucrative (aka makes more financial sense) for Mile and Apo to have different sponsorship. there's a pretty large overlap of the fan base which these brands with more sophisticated marketing teams may have noticed too. so a thought exercise this way: LVMH (owns Dior and also owns Marc Jacobs, which Jeff was at in Thailand) owns a number of brands. if Mile and Apo have a 50% fan base share and 25% individually, bringing them on for one brand might mean 100% efficiency.. but bringing Apo on one brand with 75% efficiency and Mile on a different LVMH brand (which includes Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Céline, Kenzo, and Loewe... and Bvlgari ) with 75% efficiency is then 150% market efficiency... you know? Dior took until 2023 to materialize but was likely in the works for a while. Just because we don't see anything doesn't mean work isn't happening.
5) finally yes it does allow Apo the opportunity to shine and get more entrenched in the fashion world which is also his passion. And Apo would have more time to network and chat without Mile being there. Mile and Apo having access to the exact same contacts believe it or not is actually less efficient from a business perspective 💁🏻‍♀️ and they both know that too. the reason KPTS got funded was because of both of their connections with different people/companies
all of which makes Mile's cringe social media sobfest even funnier. the heart wants what it wants (to see Apo)

hold me (like a knife) sounds fascinating, what is it about? 👀
WIP SNIPPETS GAME🌸
god okay so, buckle up because this is so dumb and convoluted.
basically during the kpts rewatch event @porschesbabydaddy made this shitpost and i said in the comments oh dont make me write it, to which dizzee of course encouraged me
so then i started writing it and @haahka made this meme about it before i'd even really gotten that far in the plot.
and what tumblr doesn't know about me is that i need VERY LITTLE encouragement to write the most batshit, in depth character analysis pieces ever.
so here i am, a few months later, writing an early 20s chan and gun are in love but can't be in love longfic, where gun destroys their relationship in an effort to keep up with his older brother and create a legacy; all leading to the inevitable end of him putting 4? 5? bullets into his ex lover and leaving him for dead on the steps of the theerapanyakul main compound. (:
if you wanted another little taste of it--
“Come here.” He stops when Gun gently tugs at his wrist and guides him to sit beside him on the sofa. Little moments like this have a way of bringing a flutter to his chest and relaxing all his bones. He misses his best friend in the tower, misses these scarce days when they can shed their roles and settle back into what they were before they became entangled in the dichotomy of the major and minor families.  They clink their glasses and each takes a sip before settling against the cushions at the back of the couch. Gun’s hand falls to rest on his thigh and Chan hides a smile behind the rim of his glass at the sensation. It’s grounding; draws him back to the now, and pushes away his guilt and his worries.  He turns his head just in time to feel Gun’s lips press against his, his stubble scraping against the corners and the hand on his thigh tightening its grip until it almost feels like he’s extracting the tendon from his flesh. Kissing Gun is something like pouring gasoline on a house fire; explosive, volatile, untamed. He wishes he wouldn’t get swept away in it each time he feels the flames lick up the walls of his ribcage. He doesn’t think a tidal wave could cool the burning longing in his chest.

Dialogue callbacks as audience insight
There were multiple callbacks to previous episodes in episode 13. I may say more on it if people are interested, but this particular piece is so interesting to me. I find Pete to be the most challenging character to read, and this helped guide me a bit.
Tumblr media
(Well,) I don't like it. - Pete Ep 11, 13
I wrote a whole thing about this and double meanings for episode 11 - how this line can be read as Pete telling Vegas that he's not choosing to be treated badly, that he (and Vegas) haven't chosen the abuse they've endured. They didn't choose to be treated as less than human. I think "I don't like it" has a similarly profound meaning in episode 13 - except now we're on the other side of it. Pete chose to stay. But... did he choose abuse? (The answer is no. Of course not. If anyone's asking or unsure. The answer is always no.)
Tumblr media
Then why didn't I say no? - Pete, Ep 13
This line. This line I find particularly devastating because we see Pete chained up and alone again. Preceding it we get flashes of Vegas's anger at his father and he's being loud about it. It makes me wonder if Pete knew what was coming, he knew that anger was about to be directed at him. If his father was at all like Vegas, Pete has seen the way these things cycle firsthand. To me this line feels like an "I should've known better."
Let's look at episode 12:
Tumblr media
But you like it, don't you? When I am like this. How do you like it? - Vegas, Ep 12
I wonder if these are the questions Pete's answering when he says "I don't like it" in episode 13. Because when Vegas asked this, it was in the context of him acting very, very human. It was in the context of Vegas treating Pete as a human. And even then, Pete didn't respond until Vegas gave him explicit permission to choose. But in hindsight - it's possible that Pete looks back on these questions and thinks Vegas was asking him whether he liked the abuse.
Vegas is both an abuser and a victim of abuse. The question is, can he and will he change like Pete did, or will he keep letting anger control him like both of their fathers?
Tumblr media
What are you looking at? Eat! - Vegas, Ep 13 What the heck are you looking at? Why didn't you eat? - Vegas, Ep 11
Humans don't grow without setbacks, and the process of change often looks a lot like falling back into old habits. If not for outside forces of the plot convincing me that Vegas will change, I would have very little hope in him. Especially with his track record of deception, which Pete is also aware of. Even if I trust that Vegas is on a path towards growth, I also trust that, unless Vegas can make this change immediately, it would be largely at the expense of Pete's wellbeing.
Tumblr media
Anyhow, you're just my pet. - Vegas, Ep 13 A good pet listens to his owner. - Vegas, Ep 11
We have Pete who has survived and escaped an abuse cycle (this show has deliberately framed abuse as a cycle in a way that I think is quite clever), now scared as hell that he's going to choose that for himself in the future. He's caught between the care he has for Vegas and his own self-respect, and he knows he can't really be okay without either of them.
Tumblr media
I got nothing left. Not even my humanity. Need me? For emotional projection, like a pet with no feelings? - Pete, Ep 13
It all comes together nicely for me in this episode. I love the way Vegas's demeanor shifts when Pete says even his humanity is gone, when it finally clicks. I love Pete holding Vegas accountable, I love him saying, essentially, that he's not pretending to be weak, it's not about weak or strong - he's getting worn down because he's human.
Tumblr media
I'm a human, Vegas. - Pete, Ep 13
People are affected by the way they're treated. Vegas became a monster in response to his dad treating him like one. Pete refuses that for himself when he leaves - even if it's arguably the most difficult thing he's ever done. I'll wrap this up with one final thought.
Tumblr media
Give yourself up to the main family. Mr. Korn is not cruel. It's up to you, Vegas. It's your choice. - Pete, Ep 13
Pete has been offering Vegas a third option since episode 11 (more on this in my VP Communication Follow-up post). In fighting, there's winning and there's losing, success and failure. Two options only. The framework both of their fathers laid out for them.
This is it, this is the third option that Pete offers and has been pushing for multiple episodes: not fighting at all. Giving up.
