i've been holding this in for three years and i don't know how.

many of you know i'm very open about sharing the spring awakening bootlegs that i have. but there is one i have never shared or even made mention of - the proshot.

we all knew it existed and i'm sorry for keeping it from everyone for so long. it is the 17 year anniversary of this capture which surprisingly means that it is now under fair use so sharing it won't get me into legal trouble.

this is a capture from the very beginning of the show's off-broadway run, so there are some changes from the finished version of the show we saw on broadway. however, it still contains the full original off broadway cast in all their glory. i'm so happy i'm finally able to share this with everyone.

Just watched the spring awakening docu on hbo- I really never realised how much this musical comforted me during my adolescence. Hearing & seeing the original cast together was like receiving a big, snuggly hug that warms you up. The moment Lea started singing Mama who bore me, I was transported back to being 14. I was very lonely, I didn’t know many people in real life who had the same interests as me, so I found refuge here on Tumblr. Through my love of glee I discovered the world of spring awakening. I was totally bewildered by this musical…. No insanely large ensemble pieces, alternative rock instruments? Actors who were actually teens too? I had never felt more seen by of media ever.

I always found it insane how much this musical touched me (no pun intended) in a way that made me feel a lot more comfortable in my body. Having been exposed to nsfw content online from a young age, I constantly felt, and sometimes still feel, ashamed of my body and my sexuality.. The songs and the book and the play always remind me that there is nothing to be ashamed of.

I’m fortunate to of never been subjected to the physical trauma depicted in this show, however it was my first interaction with understanding mental health. I particularly took with the character of moritz. I was really bad at school from ages 14-16. My teachers really gave up on me, they didn’t really know how to help this kid who was riddled with learning disabilities/neuro divergence. Moritz was also extremely curious and embarrassed about sex, as was I, and as I still am now at almost 23. He bought to life everything I was too afraid to really talk about or complain about. I think it’s almost twisted that I find comfort in a character who is so intensely sad, but just like melchoir at the end, I want to live my life, to experience the moments with this character in my heart.

I could easily write a dissertation on how important spring awakening is, and how it’ll always remain relevant. I could easily go on to gush about my adoration for the deaf west production too. Spring Awakening is a timeless piece of theatre. I would not be the person I am now without the comforting lyrics and music created by Steven Sater and Duncan Shiek.
