As I just hate it to sit on my hands regardings this... I vented on twitter already but here are a few thoughts on the current chapter (251).

Spoilers ahead, I only use old panels if referencing to something. Also i can't read japanese I only got bits here and there and I'm waiting on my copy from animate to get crushed by the chapter irl.

First of all I just came back to this panel not even 2 weeks ago as I was redrawing panels and I only then noticed this is Bookman. I was certain it is our Bookman but right now I am not sure if its truly him or someone else (but I am sure it's someone from Zeugle/Zoogle however you spell it, I would favor "Zeugle" btw as "Zeuge" is "Witness" in german, that would kinda make sense with the role of the clan in the history).

As we learn past!Allen and Bookman Jr. aren't the same person, nope. And the coat here is super similar to the one Bookman Jr. wears it even could be him just with beard, though I doubt that somehow.

What I am sure about is that we all fell for the fact we all tought the person in the flashback panels is ... past!Allen and we all thought the guy with the glasses is him. But it was Bookman Jr. all along. All the HCs we (and I mean ME) had are null and void as surprise surpise our PastA boy is someone completely different. I don't think the person asking Nea to use him is Allen. It's Junior.

Why? Because there are two key scenes Allen can remember and it's these two (both Volume 27) :

Being hold by someone who clearly 'loved' or 'cared' for him. With the current knowledge this is Allen who is embraced by Junior.

Then the second memory he still has is this one:

Which is Nea asking him what's his name is.

These are the true key elements from Allen's past with Nea/Junior we got until now, if I didn't miss a moment; as the other are clearly Junior/Nea and not Past!Allen/Nea.

To be honest I think by now that Past!Allen was indeed a random street rat with no manners, no future and nobody whom cared for him, exactly the person Mother described as she asked Cross if he would have prefered someone like that over the child he had found as host. Nea most likely found him and kind of befriended him ..? Something between them happened that Allen decided "Yes I want to host your memories" and I stay with my HC that pastA shared the same mindset as Red: he's nothing worth and better off dead/aka if his life can be of use he would go for it and if that means offering himself to keep Nea alive somehow then it's that.

And the scene between Junior/Allen .. I think it's Junior trying to protect Allen from Aprocryphos. I suspect it was him who killed Junior ... at one point he got Allen and infused him with Innocence. I think with the emotions Red still felt back then/the fact Allen remembers this as one of his ealiest memories means that he had a bond with Junior, something quite deep. There still could be the possibility that Allen forgot everything by himself because he was in denial, Amnesia after traumatic events is a thing... though we know Apocryphos likes to mess with memories.

Another thing: I don't think Bookman Jr. is Cross. Yes, Cross' mask has the same marking as Junior's scar, but why should the Bookman say the body was never to be found because ... the current Bookman knows Cross and he would have recognized his old apprentice, why should the Noah reference that and why should Bookman react to that at all? Sweating like they got his weak point as they target Lavi? And Cross would have known Allen as they have traveled together, at least partially. Also the others from Zeugle clearly implied that they were rescued last minute by Lavi being born, Cross is pretty much alive (or is he...? ) and their blood bond would have told them.

A very wild theory that came to my mind is that past!Junior = Lavi. Apocryphos fucked up Allen, why not Junior as well? Could be that - whatever happened - BOTH were regressed. I mean we don't know what's under Lavi's eyepatch and we know Bookman have a thing going on with blood/being related to each other. (Heck Lucia looks like Junior with a Haircut but she also looks similar to Allen ???)

I could be wrong with everything and I usually don't share any theories but damn I have so much about this in my head and I have to digest the fact we didn't get a crumb right about pastA not even what he looked like and my whole ass epos fic and the character I built up is just 100% wrong and urgh. I had started on two more fics last year I will completely scrap. Not to mention the Cosplay and the Fandoll I made of him... sigh, I don't think I will continue doing the Fanon Variant as Cosplay, about the doll... he's still a Character in my AU and he is my absolute fav among the dolls, it hurts my soul. I feel like my non existent fave got killed off.

This is more vent than anything else, just ignore me.

D. Gray-man theory: The name Lavi and the core nature of the war (because i am a Lavi stan and thought about him 24/7, please come back to us)

First things first, what does the name Lavi have to do with the war?

It's revealed in Komui's Lounge in Volume 26 that the name Bookman Jr. uses while making a record of a war will become the name of the log, making it easier to search for.

From this information, one can guess that the name would be somewhat related to the war instead of being a random name.

Now, onto the first clue. In the title of Chapter 119, Volume 13, Lavi was written as La + Vi, so there is a possibility that the name was derived from two words.

There was a famous word combination that sounds remarkably similar to Lavi, which is "la vie." I bet most people would've heard the phrase "C'est la vie" once in their life. "La vie" is French for "the life," and that's what I think is the meaning behind the name Lavi.

As stated above, the name of the Junior would be the name of the record, and since this war between the Order and the Earl has lasted for hundreds of years, it's very likely that other Juniors had used the name before our Lavi.

One more clue from Komui's Lounge in Volume 26: Wisely, one of the members of the Noah family who still had memories from 35 years ago, seems to recognize the name Lavi. So, I am fairly certain that the previous Bookman Junior is also called "Lavi."

Thanks to Chapter 251, now we know the long-haired man with glasses in Nea's memory was the previous Bookman Junior. The memory also happens to be about the Bookman Junior explaining "the spiral of life" and "evolution."

Combining all the clues above with another theory of mine about innocence and akuma (which I will write about later), I strongly believe the core nature of this war was about the desire to control and create life - by someone who wants to replace God, to become a god himself.

This theory also ties closely to my thoughts about the Earl and the Heart, which I'll share on another day. And if you've read this far, thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Lavi’s sitting on the edge of the roof, legs dangling hazardously, swinging like he isn’t too many floors up and could possibly plummet to his death at any given moment if gravity and wind worked together to will his untimely end.

It doesn’t seem to matter much to him, as his mind is busy with other things, head rested in his palm, emerald eye searching the wide landscape in front of him for answers.

His question has all the answers he needs – he just doesn’t like those answers. Maybe Mother Nature will provide him some new ones if he stares at her fleeting canvas for long enough. At least, that’s what he’s banking on.

He’s in love with you.

He didn’t realize until he’d returned alive from Noah’s Ark and finally seen your face again after what had felt like the longest mission of his life. Your radiant smile welcoming him home, helping him to the cod where he was to rest after Miranda finally released her Innocence.

He’d dreamt about you in the Infirmary. So much so that he was afraid he might’ve said your name out loud and someone might’ve heard. What if they had? He’s Bookman Junior, he can’t have attachments. Emotions.

There’s no future for the two of you.

That’s what he’s been telling himself non-stop, willing his heart into forgetting the way your eyes closed slightly when you laughed or the way you fidgeted with your hands when ordering your food from Jeryy.

He hears footsteps approaching but pays them little mind, assuming it’s Bookman who’s coming to chastise him for spending his time idly. In the back of his mind he does wonder who’d come all the way out here, to the tower at the southeast corner where nothing or no one really lingers of the Order.

When you clear your throat, he registers the uniform out of the corner of his eye and recognize it immediately to be yours, losing balance from the panic of you being so close without warning. He falls forward and you catch his left arm, laughing airily at him, “be careful.” You tut, as you dust off your thighs and sit down next to him.

“What brings ya here?” he asks, trying to bring a smooth and confident smile to his face but he’s not sure how well he succeeds. You smile and tilt your head in confusion, “to be with you, of course.”

“You came all the way here for me?” he asks, a mix of disbelief and astonishment in his voice. You laugh again and gently take his hand into yours. If you notice the way he flinches at the contact, you don’t say anything as you squeeze it, “obviously, Lavi.”

Silence settles between you, but it’s not uncomfortable. Your hand is still wrapped around his and he tries to will his heart to calm down. He knows the answer deep in his heart, even if he was out here seeking others.

You inhale sharply before you open your mouth, “I know you’re a Bookman in training,” there’s a pause before you turn to face him, “but I’m in love with you. I just wanted you to know that. You can do what you will with that information.”

If Lavi didn’t know you any better, he’d say you were incredibly calm about professing your love to someone but as you reminded him, he’s a Bookman. He’s memorized every tidbit information you’ve ever shown the world and he can see how tense you really are. The sharp line to your mouth, the slightly-but-not-completely furrowed brows, and the determination in your eyes, preparing yourself for rejection.

You’re not as good as Lavi at memorizing details on people, especially the small ones they can barely control themselves but you know that Lavi’s reaction isn’t one of his more controlled, proper ones. His cheeks are dyed red, going all the way down his throat and all the way to the tip of his ears. His mouth is stuck in a tight, wobbly line and his eye is as wide as it can go. You try to hold back a giggle at the man in front of you. You’ve just never seen him so caught off-guard.

He opens and closes his mouth a few times, seemingly trying to taste his words before letting them out. A single swear word ends up leaving instead, making you unable to hold back your laughter, leaning forward as you laugh. You abruptly stop when you suddenly feel his hand by your chin, lifting up your head and catching your eyes with his. He’s beautiful like this, you absentmindedly think as you can’t help staring at him like he hung the stars just for you. with a shaky breath he leans forward and you slowly close your eyes as he comes closer.

Your lips collide and he lets out a deep sigh, one that indicates that he’s been thinking about this for just as long and deeply as you have. You press closer to him, and the grip he’s gotten on your uniform jacket tightens, pulling you impossibly closer.

He’ll figure it out. He’ll find his own answers because this, this is what heaven feels like, he decides.

🔨Lavi is a man with many charades, ranging from cheerful and laid-back to reserved. He is initially very distant from his darling as well, dreading the fact that he has actually gained an obsession. His normal fondness for women who meet his standards are thrown into the river as he becomes almost hyper-focused on you. He’s the successor of the next bookman and more insightful than he might sometimes let on, he’s all too aware of his feelings. Already in a bad position since he shouldn’t be too attached to anyone, his conflict worsens only more with his darling in the picture now. Keeping it a secret is the key, hiding it from Bookman and avoiding you as much as possible. That he stalks you occasionally stays a secret too.

🔨Manipulative. He’s had so many different identities already that Lavi is a skilled actor. It seems to happen subconsciously that he adapts his personality a bit more to what you like whenever you two do strike a conversation. Also the type to occasionally drop comments or remarks to lead you more onto the route he’d prefer you to take in life. The boy attempts to not be too selfish, his decisions are mostly fueled out of his strong sense to protect you. His heart is never fully opened though as he feels guilty for his obsession and is in a tricky situation since he is a Bookman. He tries to not let his suffering shine through but it becomes harder with time the more his love deepens.

🔨Jealousy has never been a big problem of his yet when he experiences it, it always leaves a bitter taste in his mouth. The problem is that Lavi doesn’t court you or shows that he’s taken a serious liking towards you, besides his playful flirting. That you’re free for competition is clear for him but he is a bit naive. How bad can jealousy be after all? He’s not the super jealous type but he does feel annoyed when someone starts flirting with you or you and the other person seem to have good chemistry. His relaxed facade cracks after a while and he often finds a way to interrupt any interaction or insert himself in it.

🔨His different facades include the angry ones as well. Now, Lavi finds himself being rarely angry. Only when a serious issue arises can he turn very irked and mad. His main goal is never killing though unless the person is an Akuma. First priority is always getting you out of danger so his attacks are never aimed to kill someone but to knock them out and immobilize them. He intimidates and frightens someone if they plan something with you, never seeks to murder though. It is a last resort, a desperate decision when nothing else works or when he’s been positively traumatized because you’ve been caused severe harm.

🔨Lavi won’t kidnap his s/o simply because it would be too complicated. He’s only a Bookman Junior so far, travels countries to record history and is as of now still with his old man. Where the heck is he supposed to fit you into all of this and keep a watchful eye on you all the time? Not only would Bookman beat the living crap out of him, it would be fairly dangerous for you too. He has some standards and can’t make the mere thought of abduction acceptable in his mind. It’s impossible for numerous reasons.

🔨He probably won’t be able to properly show his genuine feelings until Bookman has talked with him about it and given him permission. Honestly, even Lavi knows that it can only take that long for his old man to figure it out and he warns his successor about you and falling in love. The moment he knows that he seems to tolerate it though, Lavi turns more genuine with the guilt not holding him down anymore. Calls his darling romantic nicknames and starts to become more touchy with them, especially when he’s jealous. He doesn’t hold back the feelings in his heart anymore, expresses all the fondness and adoration he has. Lavi is maybe a bit lovesick.

Unprompted, Bookman began speaking again, though he kept his voice low. “I require your assistance with my apprentice.”

The comment only left Link more confused than when this midnight excursion began. “Bookman Junior?”

“Yes,” the old man replied, still walking in the darkened halls. “And as this is a sensitive matter, I ask for your discretion.”

Link pressed his lips together in a thin line, warning bells going off in his head at the phrasing. “With all due respect, my loyalty is to the Black Order and Director Lvellie. I am not in the habit of keeping secrets from him.”

Bookman didn’t bother to look back as they walked. “I think in this case, you might be inclined to side with my need for silence on the matter.”

“I sincerely doubt—” Link cut off his sentence, nearly falling backwards from the scent that suddenly accosted his lungs. The sweet, cloying aroma surrounded him, and he began to sweat. Hot under the collar, he pressed his hand to his nose and mouth in a feeble attempt to block the smell.
