The Devil's Plan, Review (Netflix, 2023)

I was curious of this show upon reading tweets about it. I'm only familiar with Ha Seok-jin as I've watched him in kdramas (and a few variety shows where he guested in).

I actually didn't expect that the games would be so well-crafted, and how it shows some of the human survival insticts in such shows. I do wish that some of the earlier main matches were individual games before it proceeds to somehow an alliance/team game by the end. I was kind of bummed that potential ace players were eliminated due to some bad lucks 🤧 and individual matches can really show each of the players possible strengths.

Overall, I enjoyed the shows as there are really mindblowing twists in it. It was kind of reminiscent of Liar Game (which I enjoyed before!!). Really looking forward if there would be news of a second season. Hoping for a much more intense strategies, alliances, and a lil bit of drama.

Congrats to Ha Seokjin!!! It was honestly well deserved after seeing how he played the game, fairly and logically. (And i dont know if it's because I was slightly bias for knowing him prior to the show, but I really did root for him hahaha)

Salute also to ORBIT, for also giving his best to all games, especially for stepping forward. His strategy may not have worked well but yea. His poker play was truly great!

To other casts also! I was on team Seokjin-Seewon-Dongjae-Guillaume who somehow ended up like an underdog team in the show.

Miles G (shaking his head and smiling): You and your crazy ideas...10 bucks says we get caught

Ganke M (smiling wider): 10 bucks says we make it up and back and no one notices

Teacher: Alright esteemed students, as you have already observed we are now halfway towards a total solar eclipse! Notice how the sky is now darkening and the glorious rays of the sun are being overlayed just like in chapter 2 of our textbook 'Wonders of the Galaxy Volume II'....

Ned (in front of Ganke and Miles, messing with another student): What a nerd, I bet you like this stuff and want to read the entire textbook again don't ya freak?

Peter (visibly annoyed through his glasses): Stop messing with me and bother someone else

Ned (raising his eyebrows then facing him and poking a finger onto his shirt): What are you going to do about it shortie?

Welp if this was how Peter was going to finally stand up to Ned, he can thank Ganke later

[Ganke shoves Peter into Ned and then grabs Miles G's hand as he slips into the back of the crowd as a commotion starts]

Miles G (shaking his head and laughing): Hahah you we're wrong for that

Miles G (opening his arms to him): I swear you're crazy sometimes- I dunno what to do with you

Ganke M (getting into his arms bridal style with a wide smile): Hold me and watch the eclipse with me?

Miles G (looking down at him and smirking): Yeah...okay mastermind

[Miles G crouches down before launching off the concrete and wall jumping expertly from platform to wall until he reaches the roof and sets Ganke down]

Miles G (putting on the eclipse glasses): Welp this is it

Ganke M (with the glasses on, putting an arm around Miles): Heck yeah now this is a view. Here it comes!

[Ganke M and Miles G both look up and watch as the moon covers the sun, and a new aura surrounds the dark moon]

Miles G (a smile showing his dimples): Heh...nice

Ganke M (smiling the same way): Now that's prime time

Miles G (snaking an arm around Ganke's side): Hah you nerd

Ganke M (looking down at him with a smile): If you think I'm nerdy now- wait till we see this together again in 2044

Miles G (looking up at him with a shy look and a smirk): Hah- I look forward to it...nerd

[They both laugh, then enjoy the rest of the eclipse together]

Alright, I finally got my hands on this full ... presscon? cast reaction? Whatever.

I already shared some screenshots from this before (by some people on Twitter) and after finally watching the full version, I fell like I need to share the rest of the season 2 world building and character lores mentioned and discussed to you guys in here (and also major spoilers for season 3)

P.S. I could be wrong on some of the points here (either misinterpreting or not paying enough attention), so please correct me if I do in the reply section

Season 2

I'm still confused af on this line : "he killed his original body as well as his personality, eventually turning into the twisted monster that he is now". Like so, does it refer to Sang-won killing his original body in season 2 or is it about monster Sang-won killing the real Sang-won?

I still don't get this line too, so interpret it however you want : "The child covered in black?" "This is where what's remaining of Sang-won disappears, uncovering the child."

Chan-young was a baseball player. Ye-seul was one of the cheerleaders

Oh, apparently monsterization does still happened inside the stadium. That's why there's a regular daily checking. Anyone showing symptoms will be out in the isolation place (yeah that place where they put the sick mom in). Some lived, some died inside the isolation => might be why Chief Ji keeping her monster son secluded somewhere deep inside the stadium

Hyun-su cut Yi-kyung's daughter hair the same style as him, hence how they're being similar appearance wise

The live action crew is adapting Shotgun Boy into Netflix Sweet Home

Yi-kyung blames herself for how her child turned out to be with her monster-turning power

Yi-kyung's inability to give affection or even touched her child stems from the fact that monsters are created from human desires, so she didn't want her child to have desire (awfully familiar with a particular old man *side glance*)

The "real Jung Wui-myeong" is one of the scientists. Sang-won (or monster Sang-won depending how you interpret the earlier points) took his identity and used it as his own, probably to separate himself from his old human self

Season 3 rough summary

Family drama : Nam Sang-won starts a bunch of trouble (this bitch) in order to create a world he dreams of. There are family reunions and conflicts between spouses. He also meets his child (uh oh). They fight for her custody. This custody case didn't need a court (fuck, oh come on 😂). Yi-kyung wouldn't just talk it out. She'd fight until one is dead

Sibling drama : Eun-yu will meet Eun-hyeok again, but I'm not sure it'll make her happy

Second male lead struggle : Chan-yeong faces even more hardships as the story progresses. But even then, he gives up a lot just to protect Eun-yu. He starts to understand the monsters more. There's a lot on his mind as the story goes on.

More monster Hyun-su : Hyun-su lets go of himself and lets out the monster. But the monster doesn't just do its thing. He reads Hyun-su's mind and acts as he wants.

Another Hyun-su and Yi-kyung interaction : And later on, he interacts with Yi-kyung as well. The emotion it brings also felt huge. In the narration, he tells Eun-yu how much pain Yi-kyung is in and that he has to stop it all himself. So I'm sure Hyun-su sparked a change in Yi-kyung's heart. That'll continue in Season 3.

Thinking for the rest of my life how S1 of TWDG begins with Lee in cuffs, life over, because of a man he just killed, who took a girl he loved, and ends with Lee in cuffs, life over, because of a man he just killed, who took a girl he loves, but literally everything about that string of statements has so utterly changed meaning, the end could not be farther from the start. The bookend of finishing right where you started, and nowhere near it.

Both the first and last line in the game are spoken to Lee, about Lee, and reflect regret towards the end of his life, but even the flavor of regret could not be more distant. “I reckon you didn’t do it,” and “(I’ll miss you) - Me too,” do not even share a sadness. The first legacy, remarked on throughout season 1, would have been ‘murderer.’ The real one is so far the opposite, his ghost carries every person who survives for the rest of the series. I hear it described as about redemption, but the focus is never once in the game about Lee making up for something. You never even really know what he did or if it was merited. The game is a second life, and culminates in a stranger accusing Lee of having no right to live or have someone who loves him for every single thing he’s done wrong since the game began, no matter how unfair the accusation, and about that being bullshit. About it being enough, what he did for Clementine, for everyone, for himself. It’s about salvation, maybe. Of the self, by the self, from ruin, through meaning in love and caring for other people, no matter their endings or yours. Ben always dies, but it mattered. Omid always dies, but it mattered. Duck, Carly, Katya, Mark, Doug, always die, but it mattered. And Clementine always lives, and that does too. Lee always dies. It just takes the course of a season. But he’s not lost anymore when he does.
