It's, once again, been a while since I've cartoon posted... I've been binge watching some shows, catching up for their new episodes... honestly Amphibia has been stable before the, well, big finale, and I enjoyed what TGAMM has offered so far! although for the two I haven't watched their christmas specials yet, and I have completely binge watched CentaurWorld's season 2 during class (dw we weren't doing anything important, it's literally the last week of school) yesterday... it was really something.
But in today's cartoon posting I'm not going to be talking about those shows BUT I am going to talk about an animated movie saga I've watched in the span of a few days, a mexican classic! it's not really known outside of here, and it's generally called: "Las peliculas de Las Leyendas" (The movies of Las Leyendas (the legends)), you probably heard of it as Legend Quest:
For what you can guess, it's a bunch of movies each talking about a different popular mexican legend and/or myth, in chronological order we have, La Nahuala, La Llorona, Las Momias de Guanajuato, El Chupacabras and at the end of the saga, El Charro Negro, it's not the last one though, there's another movie coming which is a prequel called Los Origenes (the origins) and even though it says it's coming this year, it's still not available yet as of December.
All of the movies except the most recent one are free to watch on YouTube (and also on a few streaming platforms, but it may be exclusive to just Latin America) if you want to watch all of the saga entirely blind and read my review later, keep in mind though, there is no english dub and/or subtitles so you will have to guess the plot, apologies!
Anyway, you know the deal, yadayada after the cut there's spoilers and stuff. My general consensus? It started small, maybe not that good due to very little funding, but from La Llorona onward it just. gets. better.
So, let's start humble. Movie numero 1, La Leyenda de La Nahuala:
The story sets in New Spain in the early 1800's, it gets pretty long to just write it down here, but in short, The leyend is about a demonic spirit who took the body of a woman, killed an entire high class family, controls the spirit of two girls and now, haunting an abandoned house in Puebla, is lookin for the final soul of it's ritual. Leo, our valiant protagonist, pisses himself 3 times to it's story but goes inside the house since his brother Nando got sucked in by the spirit, and defeats it at the end nonetheless. His brother gets the karma for being an asshole. During the movie we get introduced to a handful of characters that would appear as part of the main cast or important characters in later movies, such as Friar Godofredo, Teodora, Xochitl, Las Calaveritas (the two sugar skulls), Don Andres, Alebrije, Nando and of couse, Leo himself.
Being the first movie it's of couse going to be a starting point for Animex (today Anima Studios), which well... it's a start. The animation (and in some cases phasing of the story) was not good unfortunately, but keep in mind, it was one of their very first movies + apparently they had very little fund at the time for what they wanted to make, the story is interesting but those issues take a lot of points for the movie. Despite that, it was a sucess! So succesful they decided to make a Sequel 4 years later!
Movie numero 2: La Leyenda de la Llorona:
around the same time of the last movie story wise, two siblings in Xochimilco go to do a trick-or-treat-y thing around some houses when one of them gets taken by La Llorona, the spirit of a weeping woman who weeps for her lost children, who died a long time ago. Fortunately! Leo and his new friends come to the rescue! And despite adversities, like Alebrije and Don Andres getting lost in La Isla de las Muñecas (Doll Island, which is a real place btw, look it up), the hot air balloon crashing and more, Leo achieves La Llorona's destiny, reuniting her with her children and leaving the town in peace and having the sibling. Unfortunately for the team, their friend Xochitl has been taken captive in Guanajuato, and now they have to save her.
Compared to the last movie, the animation and phasing improved A LOT and the character designs evolved a little as well, settling them in for the later movies. It wasn't as succesful as the first movie, but it was good nonetheless, I liked the version of La Llorona they choose, which is not as gruesome as some I've heard of where the mother literally kills her own children lol, and we also get introduced to some demon guys from La Isla de las Muñecas who would appear on the next movie!
Movie numero 3, La Leyenda de Las Momias de Guanajuato:
Leaving off from our last movie, Leo and company now has to save Xochitl from whoever is holding her captive in Guanajuato, a town filled with Zombie mumies. This was started in some mine excavation by some French guy who decided to bring his lover back to life with some ancient mesoamerican spirit found in the mine, the thing goes wrong when finding out two guys who worked there were spying on him, the mine gets destroyed, killing everyone inside (and the French guy apparently but he survives). One of the two guys was the father of Valentina, a girl who desperately wants to clear her fathers name since he has been acussed falsely, so she disguises as a boy named Luis to be heard. Also in this movie we get introduced to a high af Alebrije called Evaristo, who will appear in the next movies... another funny af character, awesome. At the end they stop the ritual from happening, they save Xochitl and the mummies stop being mummies, turn into ghosts and leave in peace. It seems to be the end of the quest for Leo and his friends so Leo decides to go back to Puebla, unfortunately he was stopped by... someone.
The movie succeded on maintaining and even making better it's animation quality, and it was just very enjoyable, though, it's not my favorite, that title goes to the next movie:
Leo wakes up from a nightmare with El Charro Negro in his way to Puebla, but the ride he's going in is stopped by some Realist soldiers, the ride being full of rebels, tried to get by, but they were all arrested and set for execusion. On prison, Leo finds his brother Nando who is serving for the soldiers... what a way to go for the asshole, but before the execusion could happen a demonic looking creature who sucks the blood and soul of people, called El Chupacabras, scares them and kills a bunch of soldiers, the crew tries to escape from it, many fail and only a few of them return alive with Leo and Nando surviving as well, later on, with the help of Teodora and the Alebrijes, who just realized the true story of the Chupacabras, tell Leo and he manages to save the species of El Chupacabras, who were actually mythical creatures called Nakitary abused by a Circus guy, and was the reason why El Chupacabras, or the Nakitary creature, was so mad. Leo and his friends are having fun at the end, but they don't know, their final enemy, El Charro Negro, is going after them, especially, after Leo.
This one, compared to the other movies, it's the SPOOKIEST! Really caught me offguard settling in as a children's movie, and the mini scene of the rebels revealing against realist soldiers and the message of independence really got me. The animation maintained as well, and for all of those reasons is what it makes it my favorite, now...
Movie numero 5: La Leyenda del Charro Negro:
The last movie, while Leo tries to go back to puebla with his brother, El Charro Negro goes after him and lures him to his house thanks to his disguise as an old man, by making him stealing a precious item from a guy who sold his soul to El Charro Negro, El Charro takes the guy's daughter's soul since he never completed his deal and he opens a portal with the purpose of still luring Leo in, after he is lured in, and the guy's daughter's soul in danger, now him (and his friends who got involved) have to battle against all of the other villains of the leyends before, unfortunately he doesn't do it on time as El Charro asked and he takes Leo's body for him to be the next Charro Negro, his friends try to stop him but that makes his evil spirit free, that breaks his conection to the spirit world and Leo had to leave Charro Negro's house/realm, he and Nando leave while his friends are fighting the evil spirit of El Charro Negro, and it ends. The evil is defeated, Leo goes back to Puebla with his brother, a bit sad that he doesn't get to see his friends again but knowing full well they defeated evil, and now he gets to live in peace.
The movie to me makes a perfect ending for the saga, and it does it pretty well, it's quite emotive and well, it's just good, and the animation maintained it's quality and phasing as well. Just good!
Now, the only movie left to watch is the Origins one, which is not out yet, it's a prequel and I'm not quite sure how to feel about it having seen the trailer... but oh well.
