♡ ANGST OF THEIR FAVES - Mizuki Akiyama, Rui Kamishiro and Ena Shinonome x Reader

Mizuki:

Mizuki will probably be the most likely to start sobbing in response. Half of the time it's jokingly, but you have made them cry before

They definitely seem to be the type of person who cares WAY too much about their faves, so they are very affected by your angst

If you make them art, they definitely love to appreciate it, but they will also be too busy crying to fully do so

If you write them something, they'll also be crying over it, but they're very likely to save the quotes that ruin them

You send them your angst work, and they take about half an hour before responding with "WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO ME???"

Rui:

Rui will not know how to respond most of the time, so you'll get radio silence on his end as he tries to grapple with his emotions

He seems like someone who likes his faves because he relates to them, so your angst utterly destroys him in multiple ways

He'll be destroyed by normal angst art, but if your art includes symbolism on top of everything? He's losing it

It's mostly the same case with writing, although he will always stay awake late into the night to finish them even if it's crushing him

He's silent for an hour after you send your angst work before he sends you a single "I'm fine!" He is not. He was busy screaming.

Ena:

Ena will be upset (who wouldn't be), but she's the most likely to respond while being upset and vengeful

She feels a lot of emotions all of the time, and focuses those emotions on her faves, so you can imagine how she will feel

As a fellow artist, she will be appreciating everything you drew, but the more she appreciates, the more the art hurts

She doesn't write nearly as much, but your writing would also hurt her so much. She will throw pillows over it

You send her your angst work, and she'll call you on the spot, rambling and losing it before going, "I'll get you back, just wait."

Can I request headcanons for the lads and a mute s/o? Maybe their s/o uses a draw pad to communicate (Kinda like the little girl in Yakuza 3, though it doesn't have to be trauma related)

Oooh this is a super cool idea. This one might be rather brief since I don't think I've ever met a mute person and I wouldn't wanna get too lost in the fictional sauce if that makes sense (never wanna misconstrue the truth about anyone with any disability or say something blatantly incorrect or offensive and all that). Headcanons below da cut though, have a good one!

Kazuma Kiryu

Honestly unfazed. Willing to learn how to communicate in whatever ways their s/o prefers, whether it's by writing in a notepad or ASL. Does his best to be accommodating as much as possible. Kiryu's had to face a lot of traumatic things and has met people with a lot of trauma so he's got the patience of a saint.

Majima Goro

Might be oblivious to it at first but once he realizes that his s/o is mute, he'll feel so bad and apologize. The most gentle of all of the boys with anyone with a disability, especially after spending so much time with Makoto. Speaks up on your behalf and would punch the hell outta anyone who tried to even think about making fun of you.

Akiyama Shun

A little confused at first but settles into things pretty fast. Gets used to his s/o pulling out a notepad to write down things. Type of guy to just bring his own notepad with him everywhere just in case his s/o needs something to write on.

Saejima Taiga

The biggest sweetie about it. Takes his time and never rushes you. Actually kind of interested in learning sign language if you wouldn't mind teaching him. Whatever method of communication you prefer, he'll go to great lengths to meet you in the middle and learn to communicate with you properly. Absolutely not judgemental at all.

Ryuji Goda

It's such a contrast to his typically boistrous and loud personality that it honestly teaches him a lot. You'll notice Ryuji becoming more patient, less inflammatory, and listening more when people speak. Totally the type of guy to be like "They said NO PICKLES" like in those memes.

Nishikiyama Akira

It honestly doesn't change a thing for him. Does a lot of hand gestures though, like thumbs up or thumbs down when asking if you'd like something at a store. Still talks just as much as he normally does, just gets more animated. Scared of losing you in a crowd though because he knows he's prone to panicking pretty fast.

Daigo Dojima

Gentle sweetie man. Would honestly teach himself sign language late at night after a long day so he could surprise you with it. If a pen and paper is your preferred method of communication, he'll get you a nice notebook with good quality paper and a set of nice pens. He knows he doesn't really understand what you're dealing with but wants to at the very least have or provide the tools necessarily to make things smoother for you.

Mine Yoshitaka

Would have whole conversations with you in a notepad, just the two of you writing back and forth. It may seem silly, especially if you're not actually deaf, but Mine kind of likes that it's a way of talking that only the two of you can participate in without the prying ears of his coworkers or the nosiness of judgemental strangers. Type of man to leave little notes around the house saying encouraging things or telling you he loves you.

Tatsuo Shinada

Loud enough for the two of you. Very much the type of guy who, upon the two of you walking into a cafe, to proudly say "table for TWO, please!" while holding up two fingers. Totally fine with you being quiet, although at first he might confuse that with something being wrong until he understands that you're just completely mute. Points at stuff a lot for some reason, like for example if you're ordering food, he'll point at the spicy symbol as a way of asking if you want it spicy or not.

Migi & Dali Final Episode Reaction Pt. 1

Note: This post was written on Dec. 25, 2023 when the episode just came out.

Wow, I can't believe it's finally over. It only felt like yesterday when I watched the first episode back in October and then proceeded to binge the entire manga, and now the anime has concluded. I'm left wanting more, but ultimately grateful to Sano for creating such a wonderful work, and may her soul rest in peace.

Anyway, since it is the last episode, I wanted to give my reaction to some parts that I found notable. There won't really be any that much deep thought or analysis here, and it goes without saying that *spoilers* are covered.

Nice dog. When did Akiyama get a dog?

Poor Eiji, he really didn't deserve what happened to him (though to be fair, he did commit murder and arson). Akira, as dumb as he may be, really did try his best to be a good father. Wish we saw some closure with him and his other two sons.

More bird symbolism. It's one bird, showing that the twins are still acting as Hitori.

I like how Fidélité is a part of their family now. I feel like a bit of explanation is needed, but I get that the dog is needed to represent Dali.

Dali is clearly depressed, and IMO it's definitely related to Eiji's arrest.

This was quite heartbreaking to watch. "You understand, right?" definitely refers to the fact that they can't pretend to be one anymore because of the scar, but I feel like there's a hidden meaning, i.e. another reason why Dali can't come out, which I'll probably write about in detail at some point I've written in the discussion titled "Shadow".

I think that it's guilt over what happened to Eiji. Dali originally wanted revenge because his family was destroyed, but in the end, Eiji's family was destroyed and Eiji's life was ruined, and the scar was a constant reminder of this. He likely hated himself for what he started and saw himself as unworthy of love and happiness.

He then tells Migi that Migi's happiness is enough with a fake smile, hiding his feelings from his brother once again.

As he tells Migi that he'll live as his shadow (note the light and dark imagery here), the music from when he sacrificed himself in Episode 9 plays, showing that Dali chose to die in obscurity, to imprison himself just like Eiji did, and to never experience his own happiness.

happy new year and 2022′s follow forever!

I feel I say this every year - but 2022 was the most challenging year for me thus far. From living entirely by myself in a foreign country while studying my ass off to surviving the most critical election that my country has faced since our (very young) re-democratization - it has been a lot. It has been exhausting, daunting and frightening for a myriad of reasons and yet this place (and you guys) have helped me survive it all.

New fandoms, new muses, new connections - 2022 introduced me to some lovely mutuals who have been more than roleplay partners; it solidified older friendships, as well! I couldn’t possibly go on and head into the new year without acknowledging some very special souls who made all the difference during these last months and to whom I credit part of my success of writing this with a smile on my face. :)

@sixthxchairman: YOU. YOU AMAZING HUMAN. I have no words to explain how much I love you and the immensely positive impact you’ve had on my life, Dawn. This time, last year, I was already in awe at how much I had grown to love and care for Daigo and all our plotting; one year later and we have a MULTIVERSE. You are responsible for rekindling my passion for a franchise to the point of picking up Akiyama, you have been the one person I couldn’t go a day without dropping by to say hello, you’ve kept me company during bleak hours and complicated times of my life and all I can say is a huge ‘thank you’. Akira Nishikiyama (錦山彰, Nishikiyama Akira)

The beloved brother lost to despair.

錦 nishiki = brocade, fine dress, honors

山 yama = mountain

彰 akira = patent, clear

- About his family name: The first thing that comes to mind is his relationship with the koi/carp he has on his back. From the Yakuza Wiki: “The names Nishikiyama and Nishiki are most likely derived from the Nishiki carp (錦鯉, nishikigoi, lit. "brocaded carp"). Appropriately, the koi serves as Nishikiyama's animal motif and tattoo.“ We Yakuza fans are familiar with the koi as a symbol and how it relates to Nishiki, but what about the real animal? In the Edo period, farmers from the Niigata prefecture started breeding black carps (真鯉, ‘magoi’) as food source to survive harsh winters. Thanks to a natural mutation, the magoi started developing vibrant colors, markings and patterns in different varieties, eventually leading to the nishikigoi. It seems transformation is in the koi’s DNA. The kanji 錦 (nishiki) as ‘brocade/brocaded’ refers to the expensive, high quality woven silk, but it is also used to described beautiful and elegant things. This is why these colorful carps received such name: they are considered living jewels and owning them used to be a sign of wealth and success (Source: kodamakoifarm.com). Our Nishiki is indeed an elegant and stylish man that takes good care of his appearance. We see him mock Kiryu’s lack of fashion sense in Y0. He also seems to enjoy buying expensive, quality stuff.

What about the ‘honors‘ meaning? One of Ishin’s karaoke songs, the one performed by Nagakura/Saejima, is called 故郷に錦を飾るべし (Kokyō ni Nishiki wo Kazarubeshi, "Return Home in Glory" as translated in the Yakuza Wiki). The ‘nishiki’ part uses the same kanji as Nishiki’s family name, this time translated as ‘glory.’ Jisho.org also provides these varieties for the idiom: “to come home in triumph; to return home loaded with honors; to return as a hero; to put on fine clothes .” Y0 shows Nishiki joined the yakuza out of gratitude to Kazama for taking care of his sister Yuko and to follow a path in life of his own choosing. The new scenes in Kiwami show a very optimistic Nishiki vowing to work hard to make Kazama proud and to make the Nishikiyama Family a welcoming place for Kiryu to return to. Nishiki is more than capable of accomplishing feats on his own, but he is held back when he is reminded, by himself or by others, of the inferiority complex he feels when compared to Kiryu. Taking responsibility as the real murderer of Sohei Dojima could have given Nishiki the reputation he sought for so long, but it instead went to Kiryu and made Nishiki feel even worse. It is very unfortunate that the rest of his eventual feats are accomplished through bloody, merciless means that benefit only Nishiki himself while destroying others.

- About his given name: I interpret this as Nishiki’s straightforward declaration of intentions, both as an ally and as an enemy. He’s an intense and emotional man who will make it very clear that he’s either willing to follow you into hell no matter what or planning to kill you and anyone who dares stand in his way.

As Fragaria Memories is a music project, I thought of what I think that Felicity’s songs would be like based on the current information that I did tell you about it…

Let’s start with Felicity… As she is a jester & a knight at the same time, I feel like she would have her music having some callbacks / references to some circus themes despite jesters is usually hired for royalty entertainment AND special occasions…

(Here’s a screenshot below to show the proof of it)

This could be possible that not only she is a jester and a knight, she could have some other jobs that is related to making everyone laughing at this point — You can think of other jobs such as a clown and a mime for example!

Now, back to the song explanation! I feel like the titles for Felicity’s songs usually have some ACTUAL symbols on them such as ♡ (heart) and ✰ (star) since those (yet again) ACTUAL symbols pretty much fits the most for it…

As for the lyrics, I feel like the majority of the songs that is focused on characters is usually like something behind the doors happened to them (also known as their struggles and backstories, you know… The good stuff…)…

I feel like Felicity’s character is going to lean on “secrets” (think of Akiyama Mizuki’s character from Project SEKAI and imagine it on Felicity’s character) as she hides a major part of herself being non human in front of everyone, “trying to understand what is going on in the past by trying to find the footprints of the past” as her memories about her past have become erased after she become a non human (You can tell that she is used to be a human in the past), “being an oddball in a specific group” as she is literally the only one who acted in her definition of “a unique personality”, “The horror of being non human” and lastly… “Slowly losing the sight of who you are and why are you even alive in the first place to the point that it turns a non human being into madness”.

As what I have told you, you can see that Felicity’s character is pretty much a little bit complex at this point… I will tell you more about what I think Felicity’s music videos would look like and about Ayama’s songs and music videos later on…

Tattoo Analysis: Watase Masaru

The strong, capable captain who works with Dojima Daigo to make peace between the Omi and Tojo by ending both organizations.

(Tattoo Breakdown)

While the Ashura are known as a war-loving race, and Watase's tattoo is fearsome, it is specifically a depiction of the Ashura King Mahabali. King Mahabali is known for being wise and benevolent, and such a good leader that the gods became troubled by the possibility of the Ashura gaining too much power.

Watase is introduced as a member of the Omi who loves a good fight, regardless of the reasons, and who nearly dives headfirst into a war that could destroy Kamurocho. However, he does not hesitate to listen to reason when Kurosawa's plot is revealed, and shows humility to the protagonists of 5 for saving the day. Much like Mahabali bows his head to Vishnu, Watase has the entire Omi bow to Akiyama, and goes on to lead the Omi into a peace agreement with the Tojo in 7.

Watase also gets a lightning motif spread throughout the border of his tattoo— the only one we've seen in the series so far. The club-like vajra on his arm is also associated with lightning. Lightning is an unstoppable force, and represents action that cuts through ignorance in Buddhism. The wheel is also an important Buddhist symbol. Everything seems to point to Watase being a fearsome but wise ruler for the Omi.

Majima is settled on the middle seat of the overstuffed couch, arms stretched across the back. Kimi is flopped to his side, head resting on the arm, and legs across his lap.

He grins, about to answer, before sputtering indignantly as her bare toes press into his cheek, cutting off whatever he was going to say.

"Liar."

"Ya didn' let me say anything!"

She grins at his indignation, "Didn't have to, I know you. Whatever you were gonna say was gonna be complete bull so you could avoid anything resembling real vulnerability."

He glares flatly down at her, but her grin never wavers.

Her face softens as she begins to answer on his behalf, "we both share this sort of… We have what most people would consider odd feelings, about our respective appearances."

He winces, "Do ya have ta go there?"

"Shush. Anyway. Neither of us is exactly… happy. With our appearance. Or at least parts of it. We have things we do like, and are proud of, though that can fluctuate. But there is plenty we don't like as well. To put it gently. And yet, we're both very appearance driven people."

She shifts, turning to settle into his side, "Its kind of hard to explain? Or maybe that's just me? But we both like to put in a lot of effort, even knowing that because of how we feel, we'll probably end up let down. I don't think a lot of people quite get that... That we're not being vain, but trying to mask, to hide, the things we can't stand," she glances up at Majima, "Or put them out on display as a weird sort of act of rebellion."

She glances up at Majima, who is pointedly looking across the room.

Stifling a giggle, she shares in a conspiratorial whisper, “He doesn’t really do vulnerability.”

He gives an indignant “Oi!” and she cackles as he playfully shoves her into the floor.

Carnation– What’s something about s/i that fascinates you?

Akiyama gives a wry grin, "this girl's sleep patterns are absolutely insane. I'm not the best at keeping a regular schedule either, but she puts me to shame. I have no clue how she functions."

(A faint shout of "I don't" can be heard in the distance)

Aster– What would you consider a symbol of your relationship with s/i?

Kiryu blinks, his brow furrowing. His eyes quickly dart down to the simple band on his finger, then back up.

K snorts, leaning over the back of his chair, "Yeah the rings are a literal symbol. I think they want something more well… symbolic? Maybe." She shrugs.

He closes his eyes, that contemplative-concentration look he gets when he tries to remember something settling over his features.

K jolts slightly as Kiryu's eyes suddenly pop back open, and he gives a small self satisfied smile.

It takes him just a moment to dig into a pocket before presenting a battered old key chain, with a single key on it, "It's the key to the house we share," he clarifies, "but-"

"You still have that old thing!?" She cuts him off, then turns sheepish, "ah, sorry."

He snorts lightly, rolling his eyes, "Of course I still have it. You gave it to me. I still don't really get it."

"Oh," a soft flush on her face, "Well is a monkey, like you. Your Chinese zodiac I mean. Earth monkey specifically, so it was too perfect to pass up."

He eyes the dangling gift, a cutesy monkey face, with a little dark green stone dangling from its own loop of the same chain.

"Did you really never…" she trails off.

"No."

"You must have been so confused," the start of a giggle in her voice.

It was his turn to ignore an embarrassed blush, "You gave it to me," he repeated, "It didn't matter what it was supposed to mean."

Sage– If you and s/i could live together, forever as immortals, would you do it? Why or why not?

Daigo tilts his head, gaze distant and thoughtful, "I know this is something she thinks about. It's a nice thought, in theory. Spending eternity together. As a fantasy, But in reality? I'm not sure she likes the idea if it's grounded in reality. All of eternity, here? Even together, we," he sighs, his whole demeanor shifting to something melancholic, "We're both tired. But I look forward to the years we do have."

Lee's, Rikiya's and Minami's are all personal favourites. The symbolism and intricacy of Lee's tattoo is incredible. Minami's stands out amongst the crowd, and I love the blend of his regular tattoos with his irezumi. Rikiya especially stands out to me because it speaks to everything I want in my tattoo, a huge symbol of where I come from and what I represent.

C4. Which character would you like to see as a protagonist?

I would've loved to see Yasuko's life without Majima or Saejima. She would have learned to fend for herself. She could beat people up.

headcanon: phoenix associations and Akiyama’s gold pendant

The Yakuza games have always played with references to the mythical four gods or four beasts, originally with heat actions or abilities that could be unlocked and were named after a dragon, a phoenix, a tiger and a tortoise. These are the four sacred gods of several Asian cultures, and they have been given different names depending on the country (but the myth is largely similar).

In Japan, the four beasts are known as Seiryu (the Azure Dragon of the East), Suzaku (the Vermillion Bird of the South), Byakko (the White Tiger of the West) and Genbu (the Black Tortoise of the North). And in Y4, they are very clearly represented by Kiryu, Akiyama, Saejima and Tanimura, respectively - the connections to Kiryu and Saejima are obvious, given their names and even their irezumi; but even Akiyama and Tanimura have added similarities, with Akiyama exhibiting a fast/kick-based style (not unlike a bird) and Tanimura having a mostly defensive/evasive style (similar to a turtle).

(One could argue that the symbolism carries over to Y5 considering how little the main cast changes and how Shinada feels like a Tanimura replacement sometimes, but I digress.)

In addition to the above, I also headcanon that Akiyama has adopted the phoenix as some sort of symbol for himself - as far as my portrayal is concerned, the gold pendant that he has around his neck is a golden medal depicting a phoenix, similar to this one. It is a reminder that hitting rock bottom doesn’t necessarily mean the end to everything and that rebirths are fully possible.

For Akiyama, his life is very clearly divided by the embezzlement scandal that led him to the streets - while he doesn’t openly hide or renegade the person he used to be and may talk about these years from time to time (such as when he explained to Kido why he believed/support Arai so much in Y4), Akiyama is ashamed of the man he was brought up to be. He sees his past self as someone biased, arrogant, prejudiced, extremely ignorant of everything that truly mattered and blinded by greed and false notions of success.

In short - his fall from grace was the best thing that happened to him; it served only to make him open his eyes, understand himself at his core and emerge as someone much more comfortable in his skin, confident of his choices and with a selfless, protective nature. His willpower to live and the burning desire to make the difference were awakened, and he now knows that - should these flames be extinguished again - he will be able to make another comeback.

Akiyama (despite appearances) does not give up - he doesn’t know how.

Dali's Left-Handedness (Migi & Dali Thought)

If you pay close attention, you'll likely notice that Dali is left-handed.

In fact, he has been left-handed since the very beginning.

As the title suggests, this post will be about this fact and possible symbolism. Do note that spoilers throughout the story are mentioned.

Another important detail is that when Dali is front of people other than his brother, he'll pretend to be right-handed, which is best shown in the way he eats.

Yes, even when he panicked when Akiyama was about to check the closet, he still delivered a slap with his right hand to keep up the act.

It's also worth noting that Dali is the only left-handed character in the entire story, possibly emphasizing Dali's distinctiveness as a character. Personally, I'd go further and say that he's the real main character, though I am biased...

While I'm sure that Dali may have been acting right-handed (possibly out of discomfort) to be considerate to Migi, I think there's greater meaning to this.

For example, his left-handedness could symbolize:

Individuality and uniqueness as mentioned earlier.

Concealment and psychological depth, which makes sense since Dali often conceals his actions and feelings (even from Migi) and is (in my opinion) the hardest character to read.

Nonconformity, as he and Migi are both considered outsiders in Origon Village due to their (obvious) foreign features and being from an orphanage. However, Migi is more able to "go with the flow", and Dali is likely much more self-conscious about his differences compared to others.

A logical, strategic, calculating, scientific, and "left-brained" way of thinking.

A struggle for acceptance, as left-handedness was historically stigmatized or seen as a sign of inferiority, and in Western cultures was even associated with evil or with the devil. Perhaps this shows that deep down, Dali wanted to be accepted and yearned for belonging (though he might not have realized this himself), which makes sense considering that the twins created "Hitori" in order to fit in. Hiding his left-handedness could also show his insecurities and perhaps self-loathing, which could have been caused by his dark and tragic past, his heavy responsibility of looking after his brother and serving as a good example for him, persecution from other children, and later his own actions that hurt Migi.

It wasn't until Episode 10 when Dali stopped pretending to be right-handed, and once he finally decided to join the Sonoyamas in Episode 13, he began eating with his left hand.

Indeed, once Dali was confident that Akiyama and Maruta would accept him, he placed his trust in them, and the revealing of his true self is symbolized through the display of his real voice, his real personality, and of course his left-handedness.

Finally, his decision to switch to his dominant hand after pretending to be right-handed in front of the Sonoyamas for so long could show how he was finally able to not only find acceptance and belonging but was able to accept himself as well after overcoming his insecurities. He no longer felt that he needed to force himself to fit in, because regardless of his differences with other people, he knew that he would always be loved and accepted by his family, his friends, and most importantly his brother.
