neil: all of his clothes are different brands. he’ll walk out of the dorm with adidas socks, under armour shirt, nike shoes, and some pair of unidentifiable shorts. he def mainly wears nike.
Andrew: adidas and that’s the ONLY one. he’s got the whole collection in black
Kevin: dawg is SUCH a nerd when it comes to athletic clothing (and i appreciate that). despite his organized tendencies, he buys each individual item based on its performance instead of looks. he’ll get long distance running shoes from hoka, shirts from Nike, socks from under armour, etc because that’s what fits his performance needs. he definitely gets lululemon shorts when he goes pro
Matt: NEW BALANCE!!!! he gets the retro looking shorts and the dad shoes. (he’s training for the future by breaking those shoes in)
Nicky: he wear lululemon and i feel like i shouldn’t have to elaborate on that. it’s higher end and more “trendy” him and Allison go on hot girl walks with their lulu Fanny packs
Renee: asics for sure. i feel like she’s also a tennis girlie (she would just slay a tennis skirt/ dress okay) they have a good collection of those and other athletic stuff.
aaron: he doesn’t really care. he just wears what katelyn tells him he looks good in tbh. katelyn feels like one of those people that doesn’t typically stick with one brand, so aaron wears a variety of brands. this being said, he’s probably surprisingly trendy (he doesn’t notice this tho)
Dan: she’s a champion girlie. she rocks the sweatpants and top/biker short sets like NO OTHER!!! the sets are good for running, lifting, biking, and look good with pullovers/sweat pants. Dan also probably wears adidas, especially their shoes. outside of athletic brands, she definitely only wears short socks
Allison: she wears lululemon exclusively. she’s got the shorts, swiftly techs, and pullovers in every color. she wears the brightest colors the most. Allison pulls it off and looks VERY intimidating in the bright colors cause it makes her stand out EVEN MORE
Jean: dawg is an under armour guy PERIOD. NO ARGUMENTS. i can’t explain this one exactly but i feel it in my bones. he’s just an under armour guy, okay??? he loves their compression tights and sleeves.
Jeremy: dawgs closet is just a mess. he doesn’t know what he’s shopping for half the time and pulls the colors he likes off the rack. he definitely really likes gym shark clothes
Wymack: he wears whatever is sponsoring the teams jerseys and practice clothing. coach is just consistent like that

Day 38: Meadville to Bradford, PA
101 miles, 5,820ft ascent, 6:14
Fall announced itself with a chilly 39 degree start of our ride; fluffy clouds obscured the sun for most of the day and the average temp for my 6 hour ride was a brisk 50 degrees. As you can see in the picture my cold weather gear includes a long sleeve bike jersey, arm and leg warmers, headband and cleat covers in addition to my standard two bibs and short sleeve jersey. Normally I would shed some of these layers at the first refueling stop, but not today.
As noted in a comment by Lesley Conzelman yesterday, Pennsylvania is hilly! Today’s route required ascending like we haven’t seen since we were out west. We had a few big climbs, but most of the ascent came from the accumulation of rolling hills. Much of today’s route kept us near the Allegheny River and through the Allegheny National Forest. The scenery was pretty to be sure, but I couldn’t help imagining how much more beautiful it will be in a few weeks when the leaves start to change. We are seeing the first hints of color, but it hasn’t really started yet.
Although today was a few degrees colder than I’d prefer, I ride very strongly in the cool weather. I’m no longer battling just to stay hydrated and now only carry two bottles like everyone else. The two bottles can last 40-50 miles so I tend to skip the refueling stops and just eat a gel or two from my pocket. The other riders kid me about this, but I find it harder to get going after each stop and would rather sail through with as few stops as possible. Case in point, although we’ve been riding for 35 days, I think today was my best day in terms of normalized power (218 watts).
I haven’t talked much about our guides, but they are the key to the success of this trip and have been simply incredible. This is the first time all 5 guides on the trip are veterans of the cross country trip, having guided it at least once before. We have three vehicles in support and the guides rotate driving with riding with the group. Interestingly, there is no seniority among the guides in terms of decision making etc., they all have an equal vote. On the hand, the job is pretty straightforward and repetitive; load the luggage trailer in the morning, send the riders on their way, execute 4-6 refueling stops and a lunch stop, set up the arrival area at the hotel, join the group dinner and repeat for 47 days. Along the way they are sourcing food, snacks, drinks, preparing delicious lunches literally in the middle of nowhere, repairing and adjusting bikes and answering the rider question, “Where’s the next refueling stop?” several hundred times a day. They do all this tirelessly with a smile and are definitely getting a big tip from me and the rest of the riders.
Blake and Megan, the two guides on the left, are in their mid-30’s, have been with Trek for several years and were married a few weeks ago. Meghan is the guide who was hit yesterday. Brian, the guide in the middle was in the Air Force for >10 years before requesting a special
transfer to complete Army Ranger training. He is now in the North Carolina reserves as an Air Traffic Controller. Rae, the guide second from the right was a D1 soccer player with degrees in math and economics. She didn’t know anything about biking but interviewed for the job and is the youngest guide Trek has ever hired. Actually her age is a bit of a challenge because Trek guides need a Commercial Drivers License and the insurance is complicated if you’re under 26. I don’t know Brent as well, but he’s the guide who drove me to the hotel and checked me in when I was sick and I’ll always be grateful for his care and compassion. This trip literally couldn’t happen without outstanding guides and they’ve never let us down

Packing: Van-Supported + Hotel Tour
(part 3 of 5) I'm gradually going through past trip notebooks and jotting down all my packing lists down in one place. I'm writing out my packing list for an upcoming trip now so I figured I might as well copy and paste it onto the blog as well...
In 2022 I went on a multi-week vehicle-supported stay-in-hotels tour: a ~1200 mile ride through Vietnam and Cambodia with TdA Global Cycling. Typically for this type of trip there’s a support van that transports one large duffel bag to the next night’s hotel for you, freeing you to just carry daily essentials on the bike.

The extra capacity combined with our more remote travel including gravel/dirt roads led me to pack heavier. My packing list for this type, climate, and length of trip (retroactively revised based on what I wished I’d had, or brought but didn’t use):
Clothes:
In general, I packed enough clothes to do laundry every six days (this bike tour was organized so we’d ride at most five full days in a row between days off), plus overnight hotel-room-sink laundry for crucial fast-drying items, and wool Ts I can wear multiple days.
Bike clothes:
(3-4x) padded bike shorts [two pairs is enough if washing in the sink each night, but when it’s raining or there isn’t an easy place to hang it to dry it’s nice to be able to take a day off laundry]
(6x) socks
(2x) shorts with pockets (“mountain bike style”) to wear over padded shorts, also fine to walk around town in
(2x) light merino wool t-shirts to both bike and walk around in
(1x) synthetic souvenir jersey from some past trip (conversation starter!)
mesh t-shirt to bike in on the hottest days (there isn't much I find comfortable to bike in on 90-100F sunny + humid days, but the AeroTech Delta Cooling T-shirt was pretty good)
lightweight cycle cap
bandana (can soak in water to cool down on the hottest days)
sun sleeves
arm warmers, leg warmers, leg sun shields [never needed, omit in this climate]
fingerless gloves
[tbd future] full finger waterproof gloves– there was one cold and rainy day at elevation they would have been appreciated
general-purpose bike-and-walk shoes
backup pair of shoes (in case first get wet and don’t dry by the next day)-- this only came up twice after very rainy days, but I was glad to have them. I save an ancient worn-out pair of shoes just for this.
flip-flops / crocs
[tbd future] hiking shoes with better arch support, or insoles [would be bulky, but on one many-hour hike on a rest day I was wishing I had these]
[tbd future] bike helmet brim (e.g. Da Brim) [wished I had more of a helmet visor some days, and this was great on the past Utah MTB dirt tour – on the other hands, it also catches the wind if biking faster]

(5x) spare tubes (managed to use 3 plus some patches on a month-long tour with moderately rough roads)
bicycle lube (Boeshield T-9 or other), double-bagged in two ziplocs in case of leak (the bottle did leak once-- I'm glad I bagged it)

(2x pairs) brake pads
(1x) spare set of pedals (likely unnecessary, omit next time)
(4x) spare spokes (the right length for the front wheel and drive and non-drive sides of the rear wheel– I had to chat with the original bike manufacturer to double-check these)

This kind of supported tour generally offers a midday lunch / snack popup by the side of the road, and periodic towns where we could buy snacks, but I packed about one snack for every two days just to have some familiar options (peanut butter and dried pineapple) as well as some hydration salts.

Weight:
Not counting the bike and helmet or the clothes I wore onto the plane, the original version of this packlist came to about 48lbs (22 kg) in the duffel bag. Once I was riding with some of it on the bike (hip pack, bike bags, tools, snack bars, and so on), the duffel that was transferred between hotels weighed about 40lbs (18kg).
The revised version of this packlist for a future trip (removing the strikeout items and adding most of the "tbd future" items) also came to about 48 lbs as checked on the plane total including the bike bags, or about 43 lbs / 19.5 kg once some items were carried on the bike. Not quite at my goal of 18kg but close... I could pack lighter and with fewer separate sub-bags, but I like being organized and bringing a few new pieces of clothing/gear to try each trip.

Chilly, but since no one complained I didn't waste any propane. For the 1 PM class we enjoyed a misty rain that didn't show up on radar, but was enough to coat the workout mats.
Kayla set a new precedent today when she volunteered to lead the mobility/flexibility warmup. Now we can count on her, especially when Armando is absent.

A large percentage of athletes were impressed by the implied threat and did the Arboretum Loop plus Pushups. Bernie and Ed scaled it and did Bike ERG plus Pushups in the comfort of the Barn.
Elite athletes seldom do warmups or cool-downs.
Christina/Zac and Jake made an appearance. This is not meant to shame them, but they haven't been seen for a few months. I think they have missed 3 batch's of LHCF T-shirts. They all earned the latest long-sleeved jersey.
Kayla rang the bell today. Kayla refuses to allow me to coach her, preferring the coaching of Cheri. This has no reflection on my coaching abilities; Kayla just doesn't like me. Never-The-Less, Cheri coached Kayla into making an all time record Deadlift of 200 lbs. Kayla ripped it off the floor with a savagery that indicated she was good for at least 10 lbs more, but what do I know. Kayla rang the PR Bell and Alicia made a video. Perhaps they will let me share it on Facebook.
FYI, Cherrita Deadlifted 255 lbs in the early session.

First Day of Fall and a "winter ride".
I had to book some distance so I can close out September with some degree of accomplishment. Code for at least matching last year. I did 52ish km.
There was a light shower but it had cleared. Another set of clouds was on the way. I figure I could do a modest loop and get back before it hit. A genuine storm was forecast. And it was windy. Threats of rain and lots of wind. Just like our Winter.
I had three layers on for 14 degrees C. I wore a technical long sleeve hoody under my jersey and a light rain jacket. That was fine and I had no temperature issues. I debated putting on the fenders. I also thought I could switch out the aero wheels for the stock alloy ones. That is more than a bit of bother. So I dint.
I did a simple loop out to UBC. The wind was 25 kph from the southeast so yes lots of headwind outbound. Its always a headwind. The good thing about UBC is the long downhill on the return basically overcomes any headwind. The weather was cool but dry for almost the whole ride.
Then it wasn't. The rain started when I was 12 km from home. In one km I was wet. Hey it is part of the game. Wet is not bad if you are OK thermally which I was. I have hosed down the bike more than a few times so get the muck off was an added step once home. WD40 is great to protect the chain and shiny bits. Gotta get the water out of the mechanisms.
This is standard practice in the winter as that is when we earn our title as a rain forest. Snow stops riding, but rain is fine. This was just like a winter ride.
I strained my Achilles tendon again. One Ibuprofen fixed it. I gotta do more stretching. Its always the right one. When I felt the tweak I backed off so it was a relatively easy ride home in the rain.
I have not gone out with the club for a while. They had booked a really long ride for Saturday which was frustrating. First thing is that is exactly the kind of ride I needed in August when they were doing short boring rides. Second is the weather forecast was shit and unless you are rather hard core there would be tears. Third is they changed the route three times from a short stupid ride to a long one then back to a short ride late Friday (the night before) when they finally looked at the weather. Fourth that size of long ride needs support or several stops for water and fuel which was not evident. So no way I was going with them.
I guess I am done with the club. It is not serving my needs. So I guess we will see what happens.
