This morning as I stood in my kitchen, I looked at the time and wondered whether my son was up yet. Just then I heard the floor above me creak (his bedroom is directly above the kitchen), and I thought to myself, "Ah, yes, I hear him mocorog".

Why did the word mocorog pop into my head and what English word could I have used instead? I realized that I'm not entirely sure what the word mocorog means, but as far as I know, it has the idea of sort of making small movements and shuffling around. To me it's sort of onomatopoeic, the word itself sounds like the little movements it describes.

This online dictionary translates it as move, stir. Yes, ok, that works. But mocorog just sounds more like what it means, lol. Move is far too broad of a term, and does anyone besides the Queen really use the word stir to mean move in every day life? (I mean, even the Queen doesn't use it anymore but you know what I mean.)

This link shows snippets of the word mocorog in action. As you can see, how you translate it into English depends on context (I didn't know it could describe jittery, excited movements).

Stir is really the best translation. We need to bring stir back into usage. I'll start the petition.

For those that like to thoroughly study new vocabulary, the infinitive of mocorog is mocorogni (to move/to stir).

Here's how to conjugate it for the present tense:

Én mocorgok

Te mocorogsz

Ő/Ez/Az mocorog

Mi mocorgunk

Ti mocorogtok

Ők/Ezek/Azok mocorognak

I don't have time at the moment to research this, but I suspect mocorog is derived from the word mozog (move). Hungarian likes to make diminutive words from existing words. Mozogni means to move, and mocorogni means to move but in a smaller way. See how that works? Perhaps I'll come up with other examples of this phenomenon in a future post.

Right now I need to get mocorogni!

Steffennek hívnak. Húszonhét éves vagyok és Hamburgban lakom. Az előző éven kezdtem el magyarul tanulni. Azért hogy jobb legyek, rendszeresen akarok írni. Ezért gondoltam hogy írok egy kicsi naplót. Talán néhány más szövegeket is. Remélhetőleg a szövegeim jobbak lesznek idővel :)

Gordon Michaels was born in Detroit, Michigan. His father is of Italian, Irish, and Jewish decent and his Mother is of Cuban ancestry. Michaels spent most of his youth in Michigan and graduated from John Glenn High School where he played basketball for the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams and still holds the school record for most rebounds in a game (27). As a teenager, Michaels spent a lot of after school time practicing and performing as lead singer for his Detroit garage band Flash Experience. The group performed at some high school events as well as various venues around metro Detroit. Michaels love for both writing and performing music is something very close to his heart. In fact, he's written a number of songs over the years and looks forward to taking them into the studio to record.

After attending a performance of a community theater production of Man of La Mancha, Michael's was stung by the acting bug. In 1986 Michaels became a graduate of the prestigious Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater in New York City where he studied under world renowned acting teacher Sanford Meisner. Michaels spent a number of years under the tutelage of Uta Hagen and Herbert Bergoff at the renowned HB Studio in New York City.

In addition to writing, producing, and staring in the film Unbeatable Harold, which featured Henry Winkler, Phyllis Diller, Charles Durning and Dylan McDermott, Michaels can also be seen in the Miramax released, This Must Be The Place with Sean Penn, Fox Searchlight's Conviction with Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell, Love and Honor with Liam Hemsworth, Warner Bros Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Another thing I'm curious about. How many words do we have per county, that other regions don't know or do know?

For example, in Hajdú megye we use

kojt/kojtol - amikor elfojtva ég a tűz és füstől (so when the fire is weak and it mostly creates smoke)

kótog - ütöget, kalapácsol (the sound when someone is using a hammer or banging on something)

pacuha - rendetlenül van felöltözve (someone's clothes aren't worn properly)

susnyás/dzsindzsás - gazos, bokros (a place covered with bushes)

hokedli - a kisszék aminek nincs támlája (little chair without it's back)

sikárkózik - korcsolyázik (ice skating)

szomorodjon meg/redva egye meg - érje balszerencse (wish someone bad luck)

tiknyom - tojás (chichken egg)

pulya - gyerek (child)

torka - kemence (pise furnace or oven)

tegnap utcázás (utcai gondozó szolgálat) közben érkezett a bejelentés, hogy a területünk szélén mentő érkezett egy hajléktalan emberhez. a bejelentés szerint a mentő megvár minket

kiérkeztünk a megjelölt címra, sehol senki, nemhogy ment

utcásként ilyenkor sétálunk egy karikát. így találtunk rá Z-ra, aki már-már Munkácsyt idéző kompozícióban feküdt egy erdő szélén, a lekaszált dzsindzsában

mint kiderült, Z ukrán állampolgár, magyarul valamennyit tud. békésen feküdt a bal oldalán, éretlen szilvát majszolva

záporoztak felé a kérdéseink, miszerint "mikor jött Magyarországra", "egyáltalán bekerült-e a mentőautóba vizsgálatra", "fáj-e valami", "vannak-e iratai", "hol aludt előző nap", "hol aludt télen". Z nagyon együttműködő volt. volt, amire válaszolt, volt, amire azt mondta "nem értem"

kifejezte azon szándékát, hogy szívesen aludna fedett helyen, így megindult a matek, hogy hol fogadják iratok nélkül, nem magyar állampolgárként. míg a kolléga a diszpécserrel egyeztett és előkészítette a kocsit szállításra, egyedül maradtam Z-vel. megtudtam, hogy Ukrajnában zenész volt, két háza van otthon, egy szerelem miatt került Magyarországra, ami házasság után hamar válással végződött. Z húsz vagy negyven éve él nálunk, az idősíkok összecsúsztak. a beszélgetésünk a taglaltan szavalt magyar nyelv mellett nonverbális jelekre támaszkodott. Z mindvégig udvarias és türelmes volt. miután a szállítás reményében felállt, összeszedte maréknyi szemetét és sokat remélve rágyújtott pár e-cigi maradványra. pöfékelés közben előadta, hogy kell játszani a legkedvesebb hangszerén

találtunk helyet, ahol fogadták, így el is indultunk. a helyen meglepetésemre egy volt hallgatóm fogadott lelkesen

Z csak állt. bediktáltam a nevét, a helyet, ahol rátaláltunk, s egyéb alapvető információkat

tiszta ruhákat adtunk neki, s a hely lelkére kötöttem, hogy biztosítsanak neki tisztálkodási lehetőséget

két dologban nem vagyok biztos. az egyik az, hogy hova ment ma Z, megmarad-e a helyen vagy visszatalál-e a látszólag szeretett erdejéhez. a másik pedig, hogy tudja-e, hogy a házai valószínűleg nem állnak, s hazája háborúban áll. míg ketten voltunk, gondoltam rá, hogy megkérdem, tudja-e, hogy a hazája már nem olyan, mint ahogy emlékszik rá. de Z annyira a saját világában élt, hogy nem tartottam korrektnek a kérdést

tegnap megismertem Z-t, annyira, amennyire a helyzet engedte. van benne valamilyen báj. van nagyadag ráhagyatkozás és bizalom, hiszen minket alig értve mesélt és szállt be egy ismeretlen autóba. van némi gyermeki lélek abban, ahogy ismételgette "nem értem". s van abban némi világtól való távolság, ahogy az e-cigik csonkjától remélt nikotinélményt
