31, 41 and 42 for the book asks!
31 - Do you mostly read through e-reader; reading app on phone; on your laptop; a physical copy; or by audiobook?
I feel like this is (somehow?) disappointing but the vast majority of the time I read physical copies. Occasionally I'll read one on my laptop but that's not the norm for me. Audiobooks are even rarer. I wouldn't read a whole book on my phone unless I had absolutely no alternative, because I don't think it would be a good experience.
41 - When you get ready for a week long trip to somewhere how many books do you download/pack inside the suitcase?
It honestly depends on the size of the books. I definitely get through books faster on holidays so usually at least 2-3 but maybe more if the books are short. I'd rather be overambitious than to find myself short on reading with a couple of days to go.
42 - Do you buy hardcover book copies for previously purchased paperbacks and library books you enjoyed reading?
The times when I'll buy hardbacks are usually 1) if it's a new book that I really want to read now and I don't want to wait until the paperback comes out or 2) it was in a charity shop and hardback was just the edition they happened to have. (or 3) if it's the only edition, like some art books and so on.) I wouldn't normally buy a hardback copy of a paperback I already have, unless it has extra content I want to read, sometimes if it's illustrated if I feel like that would be a significant addition.
Library books yes if I enjoyed it and wanted my own copy, but I wouldn't buy a hardback specifically unless it was for the above reasons. They aren't hard and fast rules but I generally prefer paperbacks as they're less cumbersome, so I'd probably get a paperback unless there's a compelling reason to do otherwise.

9 and 20 for the book asks!
9. Favorite detective novel(s).
I wracked my brain but I just don't have a favourite detective novel. I'm not much of a detective reader, anyway.
20. Where and how do you find new books to read?
Where don't I find new books to read! Right now the main source is school - in addition to the books I read for class the profs keep mentioning even more interesting books I'll never have time to read ;w; I also try to go with my eyes closed when I pick up holds from the library to not get tempted by more books. I don't think I haven't actively looked for something to read in years, there's always something interesting lined up for me.

eight shows to get to know me, tagged by @malcolm-f-tucker <3 tried to pick things that aren't just stuff i've watched recently but also i can't remember anything so. this is a p random list
doctor who (as anyone who has ever met me could tell you)
buffy the vampire slayer (tbh i only watched it for tony head to begin with instead of studying for exams)
agents of shield (it's just fun. it's not deep but it's fun)
sarah jane adventures (she means everything to me literally. also the greatest offshoot of the dr who universe ever ever and i mean that so seriously)
the thick of it (my a level comfort show. for some reason. which i watched for roger allam. every year it gets more relevant)
wallander (secretly i really like crime drama actually but i picked this one because it keeps being relevant in such circular ways to me. originally watched it for tom hiddleston and then got weirdly obsessed with it and then forgot all about it until i rewatched a few episodes for karen gledhill the other day. circles)
the omega factor (this show is not good but louise jameson is a physicist so you can understand why i enjoyed it. also the big finish audios are actually so superb)
the x files (it's bad. it's good. it's iconic. they're insane. what's not to love)

m8 this opera history book im reading makes gluck sound like the best thing since sliced bread and so now I want to get into gluck. where should I start in terms of his operas/productions?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
ok. so out of all Gluck's work, i think the very best start is Orfeo ed Euridice, which was his first reform opera. The thing with Gluck is he was trying to reform from the Baroque era to the Classical era, so you can really see how the opera struggles to emerge from itself, i guess? As a result the music is Clsssical but serves Baroque sensibilities, and the characters are halfway between real people and representative of humanity or ideals as a whole.
Anyway, I always point to the Irish National Opera's production as THE BEST Orfeo ed Euridice I've seen so far (see the video below, lmk if you want a copy)
youtube
Almost all productions today are a mix of the Paris (french, Orfeo as a tenor) and Vienna (italian, Orfeo as contralto/countertenor) versions. Orfeo ed Euridice's story is at its core this overarching theme of love and it's able to bypass a lot of conventional gender roles because of how it's been changed and adapted throughout the opera's creation.
Other good productions (not necessarily fave takes) include the ROH/La Scala production with Florez, the Theatre des Champs Elysees with John Eliot Gardiner (both Paris versions), and the one with Jaroussky and Diego Fasolis (Vienna). I have a more extensive list here.
Once you're done with Orfeo ed Euridice, I'd recommend Alceste (Vienna version ONLY). It's also a reform opera and you start seeing how Gluck's getting the hang of the Classical era style of opera with focus on the story and characters over embellishments. It's dreary and dragging but it's worth it. Also you can hear how some orchestration influences Mozart later on. The only production with the Vienna version is the one by Teatro La Fenice.
Another great one is Iphigénie en Tauride/Iphigenie auf Tauris (though i'm not sure if it was still considered reform) and Echo et Narcisse.
Ultimately, I love Gluck's reform opera because of how much love is in them (i mean. Orfeo ed Euridice has this chorus called trionfi amore. literally love wins.). His music has its cracks and I've heard the criticism that he gives lazy happy endings but I think its very human and really shows how we got to Mozart from Gluck's reforms.

1, 18, 25!
1. sleeping in or getting an early start A bit of both? I usually try to get an early start on workdays, because then I have a bit of peace and quiet for a little while at work before others start showing up, and I have a bit more of my afternoon/evening left. On weekends I tend to sleep in until 9, sometimes 10 at the latest
18. what video games do you play At the moment really not that many. Occasionally I play The Sims 4 (and if you count minesweeper as a video game... that one as well ;) ), but I've been thinking about getting Horizon Zero Dawn, and maybe get into some Star Wars games again.
25. are there any big or small decisions you have to make? It's big decision year apparently. I was already contemplating slowly leaving my current field of work, but then I got fired a few weeks ago (and quickly after that sort of, unofficially, un-fired? Either way, long story, and lots of uncertainty at the moment). So, I have to decide what I actually want to do, and since I also want to go on a longer holiday for a few months, I have to see how I can work around the work/study/travel puzzle.
