Ludvika municipality is a municipality in Dalarna County, Sweden.

The municipality is mostly located in the southern parts of the province of Dalarna. At the border with Ljusnarsberg municipality, however, there is a smaller area belonging to the province of Västmanland. The municipality is bordered in the south by Ljusnarsberg municipality and Hällefors municipality in Örebro County,to the west by Filipstad municipality in Värmland County,to the north to Vansbro municipality and Gagnef municipality, and to the east to Borlänge municipality, Säter municipality and Smedjebacken municipality,all in Dalarna County.

Dalarna is a landskap (historical province) in central Sweden. English exonyms for it are Dalecarlia and the Dales.

Dalarna adjoins Härjedalen, Hälsingland, Gästrikland, Västmanland and Värmland. It is also bounded by Norway in the west. Borders of the province mostly coincide with the modern administrative Dalarna County (län).

The word "Dalarna" means "the dales" (valleys). The area is a vacation destination for Swedes from the south, who often travel there for summer vacations, drawn by its fishing lakes, campgrounds, and forests. Some such Swedes own or rent a second residence in Dalarna, where they are likely to have a vegetable garden and apple trees. In mid-June, summerfest celebrations and dances are held in many of the small villages and in the larger cities. Dalarna is a region full of historical associations, possessing strong local characteristics in respect of its products, and especially of its people. In the western district Lima, some people in villages speak a traditional dialect, Dalecarlian, while in Älvdalen, they speak a dialect as foreign as Norwegian and Danish, Elfdalian. Historically, the people of Dalecarlia – called Dalecarlians, or Dalesmen (dalkarlar, masar) and Daleswomen (kullor) – have been famous for their independent nature toward authority.

The Old Norse form of the province name is Járnberaland, which means "the land of the iron carriers".

Dalarna is roughly the size of the whole of Jutland (Denmark).

Stora Malingen is a lake in Ludvika municipality in Dalarna, Sweden. The lake has an area of 0.799 square kilometers and is located 190.6 meters above sea level. The lake is drained by the watercourse Norrboån (Tyrsån). In exploratory fishing, perch, gers, pike and lake have been caught in the lake.

Stora Malingen is part of the sub-catchment area (669516-144607) that SMHI calls the Outlet of Lilla Malingen. The average height is 281 meters above sea level and the surface area is 94.91 square kilometers. If the 3 river basins are included upstream, the accumulated area will be 171.65 square kilometres. Norrboån (Tyrsån)which drains the catchment area has a tributary order 4, which means that the water flows through a total of 4 streams before reaching the sea after 292 kilometers. The catchment area consists mostly of forest (81 %). The catchment area has 1.61 square kilometres of water surface area, giving it a lake percentage of 2.3%.
