ive been rewatching columbo eps on prime video (idk where to get the other season after 7 :c) and i'm just done with A Case of Immunity, the one with the Suarian Kingdom and the whitest middle east guy i've ever seen ? And like. I'm not a fan of that episode, but. I feel like i'm missing a lot of political or historical context for that episode ? And I wanted to know if you knew more. Thank u, I'll get back to my little guy show now.

you're not missing much.

the latter portion of original columbo was marked by an increased desire to show him in radically different contexts--between a man on international waters, an arab diplomat, a IRA liason, a CIA agent, and a mexican matador, it suffices to say columbo got around a little more as time went on. and due to the growing US interest in the middle east throughout the 70s (most of europe's imperialist/colonialist tendrils had vacated, cold war alliances were being made, israel, oil, etc.) i suppose they thought people would want to see something topical. they also didn't want to piss anybody off, so the Very Real Country of Suari it was.

the role of hassan salah was originally intended for ben gazzara, but he was scrapped by the network for being too expensive (much to peter falk's consternation). mine too, really, because though hector elizondo did a fantastic job, i think gazzara would've played a better arab. he was sicillian, but i wouldn't be surprised if he had actual arab heritage, as sicilians very often do. his surname is arabic as hell--غزارة is arabic for "abundance", which ended up as a loanward in italian to mean "noisy".

ultimately though, the middle east is an ethnically and geographically diverse region containing a wide variety of looks and skin tones. for one, i and my entire family are lebanese. my skin is rather pale, my grandfather was tan but had pale blue eyes, my aunt is nearly blonde, etc. so elizondo's countenance may not scream "arab" nearly as much as gazzara's, but levant, maghreb, or gulf--he's not all that unbelievable either.

funnily enough, in middle ages arabia, those with blue eyes were associated with duplicitous and untrustworthy behavior....

i guess something that does kinda make me roll my eyes is the treatment of the language. to their credit, the characters do speak and write real arabic in the show, albeit...poorly. obviously it's a 70s tv movie, who cares about accurate glottal stops, but they spent like eight grand to rent a learjet for one of the scenes, and the arabic is real and (mostly) intelligible, so clearly somebody translated it. would it have killed them to hire a dialect coach?

we did get some extremely jewish-sounding arabic out of peter though. so. all is emphatically forgiven

the one thing that truly rubs me the wrong way about the episode is that it's noxiously sympathetic to the american political ethos of the time, which as we well know could do no wrong. watch columbo OWN this EVIL diplomat donned in traditional garb who wants to retain his country's DISGUSTING traditional ways while the new, hip young king who was probably forcefully instituted by american troops in a coup you'll never learn about is COOL and LOVES AMERICA and will lead his oil-filled country on camelback into a beautiful sunset of BEING COOL and LOVING AMERICA. there's NO WAY this could go south. STOP looking at iran NOW

(speaking of which, the state dept. rep who bursts columbo's bubble, kermit morgan, might or might not be a nod to kermit roosevelt jr. who played a central role in the CIA's ousting of iran's mosaddegh in 1953)

...least he's honest

anyway, in retrospect this episode isn't the series' finest moment, but it's a decent watch--and believe me, far and away not the worst treatment of arabs hollywood has thrown at us over the years. i know i'd certainly take a dozen of these over whatever the hell they were churning out post-9/11.

wallahi i could've forgiven the weird culturally inaccurate bowing if they just put columbo in a keffiyeh...

SK8 being Content Creators with videos/streaming 📱

I told @skate-loveagain about it, he liked idea and added some other ideas so the final result was even more fun. I hope you enjoy reading it! And if you wish feel free to add something or your own headcanon, I will try to be as faithful as possible to canon within the idea of all of them being content creators in some way and before/after the end of season 1. Let's start!

Reki: He makes videos/streaming of his skateboarding and often uploads short videos of his falls. Also, from time to time he shows live how makes the designs for his boards/his clothing where prints his designs or some of the boards people order at Dope Sketch, so customers and followers can see the process. He often records them together with Langa and people have a lot of fun seeing how passionate they are and the enthusiasm put into talking about what love, so they get more followers. When recording skateboarding with Langa, some of the falls are usually caused by a mysterious man named ADAM who comes down in a parachute, "nobody" in the networks knows who is but those falls have gone viral the times when that mysterious man appears, since Reki usually desists and as soon as he falls towards Langa with the words "Skate with me" Reki turns off the recording and everyone wonders what happens next. The mysterious man is shown in a suit that "looks" like a Matador, so people usually know him better by: Look, it's the Matador again. One of the times, he fell on top of Reki and people wondered what happened that day, no one knew if it was a miscalculation on the Matador's part or if it was because Langa moved away from the spot. ~What happened~ Reki: Langa, watch out!! Langa: It's ADAM again. *moves away doing skateboarding a little faster* ADAM: Langa-kun, skate with me… Reki: What?! *ADAM falls on top of Reki and the camera goes off*

Langa: He makes videos/streaming of him skateboarding usually with Reki, he recorded some of his progress with him when started learning to skateboard and their chemistry as master and apprentice captivated a lot of people. They also record their falls and publish them as short videos. As a few months go by, in several of those falls that he has recorded lately are because a guy known as ADAM appears falling on him while he kindly yells at him to "Langa-kun, skate with me", as I said on Reki, everyone on networks that don't go or have never gone to "S", call him the Matador. As for Langa, when ADAM shows up, he already acts "nonchalant" and takes it as a challenge not to fall off his board when ADAM hits the ground. while Reki keeps freaking out every time ADAM shows up. When ADAM "falls" on Langa the camera goes off so people don't know what's going on. Many have a theory that "the Matador" lands on his feet with the skateboard, others on the other hand say he can't be as cool as Langa, but no one knows the answer. Langa also makes videos trying different foods, especially hamburgers and obento (if it's homemade much better) although the latter he doesn't have so many opportunities much to his regret, and he shows live his reaction while eating. This started mainly by Reki, who in one of his videos kept recording while they were in a fast food restaurant, people were fascinated with Langa's genuine way of eating them. For the next video, Reki challenged people to say how many burgers they thought Langa could eat the next time they went, and that's how little by little companies started to invite Langa to try his food and promote their locations (those in the area) or their online stores and as Langa loves to eat, he didn't find any objection.

Miya: He makes videos/streaming of him doing tricks with his skateboard mostly when is at the sports hall. When he does them on the street often gawks at kittens or puppies nearby, so it ends up trending because more people come in to see how adorable he looks with them. Occasionally he also streams videogames he plays on his Switch, especially videogame he loves, always says that replaying videogames you are passionate about helps you find little new details you didn't see before. He often invites Reki and Langa to play the three of them together in those that can be played by more than one person, as well as sometimes adding Hiromi as well (though he always joins them as Shadow). When they record together after those live shows they usually publish the best videos that come out of it, respectively on their channels. His parents have made him aware of the importance of having so many followers on social networks so once or twice a month he takes advantage of the amount of followers he has to make them aware of the issues he cares about through his videos/streaming, mainly related to stray animals that don't have a home to live in.

Hiromi/Shadow: When is Hiromi he bases his videos/streaming on gardening tips specializing in flowers, how to take care of them, how to maintain them, etc… He also takes the opportunity to promote the store works at, the Churippu shop. His biggest fan base is made up of older people who use social networks and housewives who love to have flowers on their terraces. Many times he gets gifts from his followers, such as handmade sculptures, bracelets, even special aprons customized with adorable illustrations so he can change in each video. There are times when he forgets that is recording and starts talking about more personal topics (although fortunately he doesn't start talking like "Shadow"), thanks to this there are people who have identified with him and have asked him for advice in return. But he isn't very good at it, so sometimes has gotten into trouble unintentionally. When is Shadow he explains in videos/streaming how to win in any terrain with traps (although he uses other types of traps in skateboarding) against the heroes, being an anti-hero, either in the field of love, in the field of enmity or in whatever… although he never ends up making anything clear because doesn't want to reveal what his secrets are, so that no "hero" who is watching his videos can use it against him and win. Every time a follower replies to him, he returns it in a satirical or pedantic way, his followers already know him so every time they take it as a challenge to see who wins between them or Shadow.

Kojiro/Joe: As Kojiro has a channel where he shows how cooks live, especially when he tries new recipes (mainly Italian food) with his failures and successes, which makes a lot of people follow him, by not showing only his successes. Sometimes when it comes to short recipes, he also makes short videos, to make them more enjoyable, although most of his followers always tell him that they prefer to see him the most amount of time on screen, so if he makes more live than short videos they will "appreciate" the art of cooking much better. Most of his target are newly married women who are learning to cook to make delicious food for their husbands, although their husbands don't think that's the only reason. His fans shower him with gifts whenever they can and also go to visit him at Sia la Luce (where they know he works because one of his followers "found" the information by chance), there they ask him for autographs and the occasional photo. When his female followers are single college students who want to learn how to cook, Kojiro can't refuse to do two by two some very particular class… Although for the moment none of his female followers have revealed what the private cooking classes are like and if they're at the place where he records the videos or if it is at Sia la Luce. As Joe gives advice on how to get to have a good musculature and then how to maintain it, sometimes he's accompanied by two different ladies in each of the videos/streaming so he's the envy of many men who follow him and the desire of many women to become able to appear in them. Incredible as it may seem, although the content is aimed at a male audience (because of the subject of the amounts of food, muscle mass, weight, etc…), 90% of the target that he has in that channel is female. It's almost an open secret that Joe and Kojiro are the same person, but nobody says so.

Kaoru: He only does videos/streaming as Kaoru, as he feels that doing it as Cherry blossom would be too suspicious. In those videos/streaming he does live shodo but doesn't try to teach anything, just to show, since unless they're paid classes he only makes samples of what people can get to do if they sign up for his shodo classes, although in his channel explicitly writes that mainly he only accepts people over 18 years old. Questions or answers from followers who subscribe and/or pay are read by Carla, his own AI, at the end he always ends up simping too much for her and sometimes even lets her answer the questions, his followers already know him so they don't mind. Sometimes in the background of their videos/streaming it can hear the sound of someone cooking and talking, so in subfandoms of Kojiro's fans and Kaoru's fans they suspect they two live together. They make a lot of fanarts of them, some of which are sexual in nature, but Kaoru although it makes him a little uncomfortable doesn't mind, as he says that's the price of fame and earning more money. And besides, they may not be so wrong with the idea that they live together.

Ainosuke/ADAM: He makes videos/streaming mainly of politics and dance, specifically flamenco (mostly as taconeo) and pasodoble, since it's no mystery to his followers that he loves Spain. The political videos/streaming are mainly focused on promoting his campaign through the "channels" where young people are the most, always under the double supervision of him and his secretary, being videos quite prepared to not say or do anything that could compromise his work and that of his politics. His way of expressing himself and speaking makes the younger ones be captivated by his voice and his way of being and many have tried to give him presents that have never reached their hands. Although among all these young people there are many middle-aged women who have begun to use more social networks to see him live and fantasize about him. As for dancing he does it in videos and sometimes streaming. It started because in one of the videos he made to promote his campaign among younger people, his mobile vibrated, he saw the notification/message that came to him and he got so excited that he started heel dancing in front of the cameras saying: "This Saturday I have a date", more and more people entered the live to see what he was doing and more and more people began to follow and ask him if someday he could show more of his dancing skills, his aunts because of that event were very angry with him, because a situation like that would compromise his future as a politician and that of the whole family, but his colleagues saw how that streaming had a positive repercussion to the campaign and saw it as the perfect opportunity to show himself closer to the citizens. To this day people don't know what was the notification he received that day that made him so happy and playful, many are still trying to find out what that date was about, if it was about work or romantic, but no one has come to an accurate conclusion. When it comes to double dances he "forces" his secretary to dance with him, the skill of both of them is so extraordinary that they always end up trending, as it's the young politician Shindo and they're amazed by his dancing skill and synchrony he has with his secretary. As ADAM isn't a content creator, as Tadashi believes that doing so could at some point compromise his career if someone were to discover his true identity. For Ainosuke's part he says doesn't do it because otherwise ADAM would lose all charm he radiates when is in "S", with the mystery, terror and madness he shows in front of his audience and that eventually ADAM would cease to be interesting to everyone.

Tadashi: He makes gardening videos/streaming, especially in taking care of the Shindo family rose bushes, called by his followers as little Eden. Although he doesn't do many; may do one or two a month; he has gained a lot of followers thanks to Ainosuke's channel and being his secretary. Many of his followers have asked him to ever dance in that little Eden full of roses, as they have done in other places in Ainosuke's channel, but Tadashi ignores those answers and it's something they haven't done yet. When he's recording sometimes starts talking a lot about Ainosuke-sama (always with words that do not compromise their job), about his wonderful qualities, his perfect beauty and his relentless work as a politician, his followers already know him so they don't find it a bother to listen to him, they love to see him so happy. Tadashi sometimes makes videos together with Hiromi in private places where Hiromi records to boost the latter's followers; as Tadashi isn't interested in such things; but secretly he really likes the dedication Hiromi/Shadow puts into flowers he takes care of, so he believes Hiromi deserves to be known by more people who don't yet know about his channel, plus he does it as a thank you for the beautiful roses he always gives to his master. Tadashi only likes to focus on showing how he cares for the Shindo family rose bushes. The main reason why he doesn't post so many videos/streaming is because he doesn't like to be the center of attention as he always shows more of the rose bushes than himself, because a lot of his time is spent on his work as a secretary and as a servant of the Shindo family, on S as a capman, and on Ainosuke's channel.

Oka: He mainly makes videos/streaming for the sole purpose of promoting Dope Sketch. Since he has cute ladies coming to the store asking him for advice on how to get started in the skateboarding world, he sometimes goes on dates with them, but they never go further than that. When he does videos/streaming in the bedroom of his house, it can see several pots of flowers that appeared being cared for in Hiromi's videos/streaming. Some of ladies who have gone on dates with him speculate that this is why they never get a step further than a date, others say that he just really likes flowers and since the Churippu store is in the same area, Hiromi puts them up for sale and Oka buys them. Sometimes he makes videos/streaming with Reki and talks about how they work at Dope Sketch, as well as promoting that on Reki's channel people can see how special orders from the store's customers are made.

Kiriko: The videos she makes are about analysis. Although no one knows it, she started making them with the idea in mind of finding clues that would give away the misdeeds of the young Shindo politician. Her methods of finding information were so good for people who watched her videos that her channel ended up being quite successful and she gets so many followers. She can't post many, as has a full-time job as a police inspector, but in the moments she does those videos serve to clear her mind and get back to work. The way she talks in her videos is always without compromising her work and her discoveries when is in the line of duty, although that has made people think that the analysis she does is to analyze and discover infidelities or similar.

Sketchy: Sketchy obviously doesn't make videos, but Oka created an Instagram and TikTok account where he uploads photos and videos of Sketchy. He has gained a really high amount of followers, and they're very varied, from children to adults and seniors of all genders. Mostly successful are the videos where he bites Reki and/or Langa or almost anyone but Miya and Oka for whatever reason or no reason.

It's my first time doing something like this, so I probably left something out, but I had a lot of fun doing it. If I can think of any more characters or anything else about any of characters I¡ve already written about I'll add them in the future as UPDATE.

THE GAME: Every 24 hours, our hapless hero Mike Murdock will face off against a different Daredevil villain. If he wins, he lives to fight another day. If he loses, the game ends and his poor brother Matt will (probably?) cry about it. This will continue for as long as Mike lasts, until he beats all of the bad guys, or until I decide to pull the plug.

Listening to my anime playlist and thinking all over again: "Lithium Flower" is the only - they're not lovesongs, really, what do you call them? Infatuation songs? I-am-thirsty-for-this-awesome-babe songs? The only one of those that I can think of that has nothing to do with physical beauty. What do you sing about when you're pining for a woman with a full-body prosthetic, who could change it up as casually as we might change the kind of car we drive? Yoko Kanno rose to the challenge by getting metaphorical and yet keeping the thirst: So matador, so cold, so oil on fire She's so good, so good, so goddess lithium flower So sonic wave

And the lyrics keep coming back to surfing. Surfing the net, her ability to move through information networks being admired as something sensual and skillful and reminiscent of old Beach Boys songs. As torch songs go, it's very classy, neither creepy nor sad. (The only GitS I've seen is Stand Alone Complex some years ago, and I don't feel any particular need to see more, but I really liked Batou's affection towards the nonhuman robots and his patient devotion to Mokoto, who likes him as a colleague and friend and never in a million years. There's a bit I remember near the end where he risks his life to retrieve her cheap-looking watch, and when she asks why, he answers that he realized she doesn't wear that watch because it fits her wrist. She's always chosen to wear a female body with a small wrist that fits that particular watch. (It's implied, I think anyway, that he's thought about how if the watch wasn't so important to her she might well choose a male body for a while and how that wouldn't change his attraction to her.)

[AO3] Rating: E WC: 2477 Tags: charity auction, sofa sex, teasing, Fandom: Matador Ship: Andres Galan/Reader Disc: Volunteered by your boss for a buy a bachelor event, you hadn’t exactly wanted to attend and be auctioned, even if it was for a good event. But Andres? You didn’t find you minded when he won.

You hadn’t wanted to be a part of this event, but no one else at your company had been willing to volunteer. The rules had been explicit: Your boundaries would be respected no matter what, and it would only be for twenty four hours; seven PM to six thirty PM the next day.

And, your company would reimburse any expenses you may need to be reimbursed for.

Being auctioned off to rich bachelors did have its draws, though. The thought of men betting at least your annual salary just to spend a night with you? That was addictive.

“And I have thirty thousand dollars for this fine man on stage. Now don’t forget folks, he’s got a silver tongue to match his sterling personality. Going once, going twice…”

“Fifty thousand dollars.” The gently accented voice rang through everyone, and you saw the paddle of the man who’d just bid on you slowly lowering. He was handsome, that was for sure. pretty in a way that was rarely successful in this town.

Salt and pepper on his face, curls at the nape of his neck, you really hoped that he won the bidding match quite suddenly.

“I have fifty thousand dollars, do I hear fifty five?” A paddle was raised in response.

“Sixty, do I hear sixty thousand?” Another paddle. “Eighty thousand dollars!” His paddle was up again, and you glanced at the auctioneer, hoping he’d pick up on what you were trying to tell him; that you wanted the man to win.

“Eighty thousand going once! Twice! Our charming bachelor is sold to Andres Galan.” You let your smile ring through brightly to the other guests, before making your way to Andres, letting your hand trail over his shoulder as a way of greeting.

He was a handsome man, that was for sure. You’d only heard of him in any capacity as the owner of the LA Riots owner until now, but he was more attractive than you’d realized he was.

“Buenas noches,” Andres greeted you, allowing your hand to slide into his, only for his hand to lift to his lips, kissing your knuckles.

“Good evening, Mr Galan,” you replied, allowing the space to disappear between you.

Nerves rang through your stomach for the rest of the auction, watching a few others that you had met be auctioned for high prices. Good numbers for the children’s network you were supporting, at least.

You didn’t know where you’d been expecting to be taken to, but a lovely steakhouse, mostly silent for the night, hadn’t been one of them. The delicious food was incomparable, but it was dulled by the captivating topics that Andres offered your ears. He was fascinating in the most straightforward way; a man who had worked his way from the bottom up, who had supported the small family that he had, the man who had figured out what it was that was keeping his family safe.

“I had no idea what types of cell phones were popular, what cell phones were even common, when I showed up in LA. I had no idea other than my own illusions and desires to be truth. I didn’t allow that to stop me. It was hard when I first came here, just me and my daughter. But I made it work, I allowed Cinna a life she would not have gotten in Mexico.” Listening to him was heaven on earth, the accent fluttering over your skin.

“You made a choice no one should have to make. Betterment of their children, or their home. I think you make the right choice.” Your hand moved to his, resting on the top of the table.

“Thank you,” Andres said, a smile on his lips.

“Don’t thank me for the truth, Andres.”

Your food was served just then, interrupting any more votes of confidence. Your eyes rarely left him over the next few hours.

“And I believe this is you,” Andres said, the gears in the car shifting into park. The hour had barely hit eleven; not even four of the twenty four hours he’d won tonight. There was no obligation to complete the full twenty four hours, that had been made explicitly clear to you.

Andres’ knee was solid under your hand, thumb rubbing a soothing rhythm into the muscle. The darkness of the road made you more willing to run your hand up his thigh, feeling the flesh under the soft material of his pants. You could tell by the feel of the fabric he took pride in his appearance.

“It would be… If you didn’t have another eighteen hours of my company, Mr. Galan. Are you going to use them?” Your hand slid up the inside of his thigh, and his fingers moved to your jaw, tilting your face to his. The firmness softened after a few moments, his thumb brushing over your jaw.

“Do you want to spend more time with me?”

“More than you know.”

The ride to his house was long. It was filled with tension, with a desire to jump on the man the second you had the chance. Your hand never left his thigh the entire time, time that he happily took for his pleasure, the manual shifter engaging every so often as he navigated.

His house was almost exactly what you expected; sleek, fancy, every bit of the elegance you’d expected from Andres Galan. The large windows of his living room beckoned you closer, stopping with your hands on the back of his sofa. The leather pressed down under your weight, plush material giving under you.

You could still see the lights of LA under you, the large floor to ceiling windows offering you the valley below.

You felt removed from everything, in your own private world over the excitement of the city. Andres had a bird’s eye view, and you almost likened it to the view from the owner’s box of his stadium.

You turned around to face Andres, the sight a background to you now. He’d paid good money to have you for the night, and you had to believe that stood for something.

Breakfast was delicious, and more than filling for you both.

His office was styled similarly to his penthouse. Deep wood, beautiful leather seating, the windows placed just so to look out and enjoy any game that would be had on the field. Watching the players practice didn’t hold your attention for too long, choosing instead to perch against Andres’ desk, your head cocked to the side.

“So what do you do during games? Do you really watch every single one?” He shook his head, a soft laugh falling from his lips. It filled the room, connecting the space between you both.

“Depends on how badly we are losing.” Daring for just a moment, your foot moved up to the armrest on his chair, turning it just enough so Andres was once again facing you. A surge of cockiness was snaking through your body, looking at Andres as you leant back over his desk just slightly. Your eyes ran over him, relaxed as he was in his chair.
