Disclaimer: This is my very first time writing anything Kirby-related, so there's no sort of lore tied to this story whatsoever. Also, I may or may not have written these characters accurately (the Kirby anime is literally the only kind of portrayal I know of). This is all just for funsies, especially since spooky season is already here on Tumblr! This idea all came from a random shitpost I made a few months ago, and after seeing how much traction it got, I decided to finally write a short story about it. I am also planning to draw this AU, too, so stay tuned for that!

“Mi rey...” spoke the mysterious voice, “Mi vida... Come to me...”

King Dedede, draped in his white laced night garb, snapped out of his concentration. Glancing over his shoulder, he rose from his desk with expectancy. He searched around his royal chamber. A week ago, the voice had promised him that they will finally meet when the time comes. Tonight was that very moment. “Stranger! I can hear you, but I don't know where you are! Where are you?” Dedede responded aloud.

“Tonight, I shall no longer be a stranger. As I have promised, I will present myself to you.” the voice echoed, “Look into the mirror... Your Dark Angel awaits inside.”

Dedede glanced at the mirror. Look into the mirror? But there's nothing behind the mirror – he was sure of it! Out of all the secret entryways, emergency escape routes, and hidden corridors, a mirror was the last thing Dedede was concerned about. What could a mirror possibly hide, he thought to himself. But as the mirror across the chamber began to creak open and the gaping crack oozed with billowing fog, he got his answer.

Behind it was darkness, and in the darkness was a mask.

The mask was silver and ornate with black jewels. It faced Dedede, and as Dedede looked closer, he could make out a long black cape below it, wrapped and almost camouflaged. He stepped closer. But he could not make another inch – hesitation took over his instincts. He swallowed, pushing himself to walk towards his Dark Angel. His struggle melted when a hand appeared and lifted itself from underneath the cape, reaching for Dedede's hand. Mesmerized, Dedede inched even further towards the mirror. His curiosity and fascination overpowered his second-guessing. The Dark Angel was here and it was far too late to turn back now. The king placed his hand over the Angel's, and gently did he hold on. Before he knew it, Dedede was being whisked away into the darkness, leaving behind the comforts of his chamber.

Dedede did not know where they were going. He could not see anything at first. But then lights – gold candelabras hanging on stone walls – illuminated their path. With his sight finally clearer, Dedede could now make out who this mysterious stranger was. And what a mysterious character this Dark Angel was! In fact, nothing about his appearance was angelic. Dedede turned to glance behind. “Ah, mi amor, por favor...” the masked Angel pleaded, “Do not look away. I promise that no harm will come to you. I have waited so long for this moment, and at long last, here we are. Together, as destiny foretold.” Further down the candlelit stone hallway they went, stretching deeper into wherever it lead. Soon, the Dark Angel, his hand still holding on to Dedede's, pressed a hidden button among the stone bricks. As the button activated, a secret door opened right in front of them. There behind that concealed entrance was an astonishing sight.

The large chamber was completely adorned with candles in almost altar-like fashion, shedding light on the various carvings of melodramatic scenes. The figures, some semi-nude, eternally displayed in almost every corner, posed with such a passion Dedede only found in film and novels. He blushed at the very sight; his eyes continued to wander. There before them was a massive organ, masterfully crafted in gold and polished wood, placed in the middle of a mural. Where did all of this come from? How did this Dark Angel manage to get this setup within the castle?

Or rather...Underneath the castle?

With a dramatic flip of the cape, the Dark Angel welcomed the confused yet enchanted king. “Here is where light ends and darkness reigns. This is where music is born – worshiped! Here, music is the breath of life! Here is where I reside.” he spoke to Dedede, “And here... is where you will know the truth.” Dedede watched as his masked host approached him. His eyes – eyes that glowed beneath the mask – softened as they met Dedede's with an overwhelming adoration. “Mi rey...” the Dark Angel cooed, pulling a bright red rose from behind, “The love that I have for you is beyond mere words. I have seen you from afar – from within the shadows – and I have longed for our romance to bloom. Ah, but I must confess; a thousand apologies for not introducing myself properly. I... am the Phantom Knight... Your Phantom Knight.” Dedede could feel his feathers poof from his chest, the warmth burning bright all over his face. His heart raced with such vigor that he could almost faint from surprise. Delicately, Dedede accepted the rose.

“I... T-thank you...” Dedede politely said, trying his best not to be afraid. Although he was familiar with the Phantom Knight – his voice for the most part – everything was becoming a blur of emotions. Flustered... Scared... Bashful... Concerned... The Phantom Knight, gently, as if he could shatter his royal object of affection into pieces, caressed Dedede on the cheek. “It pleases me to know that you are not afraid of me. Many in this world fear me, so much so that I have to hide away in these walls.” The Phantom Knight continued, “Ah, your majesty... Magnifico....Your handsomeness has bewitched me. It blinds me. Si, it does! And I speak with greatest sincerity.”

Dedede began to lean against his hand, just ever so slightly. A newfound amorous sensation blossomed within him as a soft smile began to crack. He could not help it. A sigh escaped his lungs as he begins to swoon. Pulling Dedede close to him, the Phantom Knight whispered so sweetly, “Eres mi hermoso angel... You belong to me, and to me alone...”

Yeah, I think a month's long hiatus is enough time. Kirbytober wore me out man, but hopefully I can post here and there still.

I've actually had this on my mind for a while now, but I thought I'd list out my ships, from most to least popular. My blog won't be too shippy, but I wanted to give you guys a heads up in case you either really love or hate any of these pairings.

#1: Metadede

At this point, Metadede is probably the #1 ship in the fandom, so it's no surprise I'm on this extremely full bandwagon. Could you consider it a bandtrain? Anyway, they're great together imo. Honestly, I don't have to explain this one because the ship is everywhere. You get the idea.

#2: Kirribbonfluff (Kirribbon and Kirfluff)

Technically speaking, Kirfluff is significantly more popular than Kirribbon, but I love both, and who says you have to choose? They're just so wholesome together. Like, the fact that Kirby cherishes their mementos of their journeys with them (the medal and the sock) is so cute! Plus, this ship is 3 relationships for the price of one, and Prince Fluff and Ribbon I can easily imagine having an interesting dynamic.

#3: Darkroach

You've heard of the "sworn partners", now get ready for the "shadowy partners"! (Yes, that's the actual name of their celebration picture together. Nearly lost my mind when I found that out). People already ship Daroach and Meta Knight together, but I think Meta Knight's rigid (if somewhat confusing) moral code would keep him from fully accepting Daroach's... career, but that's not a problem with Dark Meta Knight. And they're both massive drama kings so that's fun too.

(The trajectory of their relationship in my head is entirely made up on headcanons, so it'd take an entire novel to fully capture the dynamic I'm envisioning, but we'll get there later lol)

#4: Taranzolor (Or Magoranza, I've seen both)

This one's not that big, and that's because it's absolutely dwarfed by Marxolor (Marx/Magolor). I have nothing against that ship at all; it's just that when I look at Marx and Magolor I physically can't imagine them as anything other than platonic. With Taranza and Magolor though, I feel they're both characters who have a lot more in common than either of them would like to admit, which makes for a really interesting dynamic. Powerful magic users who think they're very smart(tm) who hold a lot of guilt/regret over their respective mistakes. Honestly in my head this relationship is a rivals to friends to lovers kind of deal. Of course, their relationship wouldn't start until a while later in the timeline, whenever that might be, because Taranza needs to get used to not being in a toxic relationship, and Magolor needs to learn to stop making toxic relationships.

#5: Chupun

I'd hazard to call this a ship when it's pretty much canon ChuChu and Nyupun are together. Still, I love them both a lot despite their minimal screentime, and I really want the fandom to put more thought into the animal friends. They're only as boring as we let them be, and I adore ChuChu. To me, these two are childhood best friends, with ChuChu being super outgoing and Nyupun being really shy. ChuChu takes her under her wing (tentacle?) and the rest is history! But seriously, I'll lead a one-woman army on making cute Chupun content. (Is there a ship name already, because otherwise I'm using this)

#6: Flamcisca

I think this is the only controversial one on the list. TO BE CLEAR: When I hear the "Mage Sisters" I think nuns. If you believe they are related, by blood or otherwise, I entirely understand why you don't ship this one, and I also understand why this ship isn't popular because of how easy it is for interpretations to lead one way or another. With that out of the way: I think these two are great. Fire and ice lesbians? Hell yeah! Flamberge seems to adore Francisca and Francisca misses spending time with Flamberge during missions. So much of their dialogue and pause descriptions are related to each other that Star Allies kind of does the work for me on showing why they're a great couple. I'm surprised more people haven't made stuff for them, but like the disclaimer at the beginning indicates, I'm not that surprised.

#7: Sailor Goo

Well folks, we have reached it. The true rarepair of the list. I've seen all the ones listed before at least once, but Sailor Dee and Gooey is, as far as I can tell, a Stupidgalaxybrain exclusive. I blame my Tomodachi Life island for starting this... but then it also worked with my headcanons for Kirby Fighters 2... and Gooey visiting the Halberd fairly often with Dark Matter Blade... so yeah. I imagine Sailor Dee is very disciplined and hard-working as part of Meta Knight's crew, and Gooey is the exact opposite of that, which would really allow her to take a break once in awhile. (I hc Sailor Dee as a girl because why not)

I don't know.... I'm feeling a lot better now, but I definitely made up this insecurity about drawing certain things like metadede in my head. There were posts circulating a while back (and I don't remember the exact ones so this isn't directed at anyone) about how tiring it is to see mischaracterized characters or too much art of popular ships with metadede as one of the examples.

A valid opinion! It can be frustrating to curate one's own feed to a particular interest/opinion/headcanon and not see anything new for a long time. Or hold an opinion that's different than what appears to be the majority of the fanbase, and not get any interaction with it- or worse, have people telling them that their opinion is just straight up wrong (which isn't true! Kirby is special because it's so up to interpretation that I think it's really wonderful to see everyone's different worlds filled with different character stories and creative ideas!!)

So reading some of those discussions on different social media, I made myself self-conscious by thinking I was contributing to some kind of problem by sharing my art. For the first time in years, I thought I was creating and sharing "cringe" content and I should be ashamed for some reason.

After some time to process it, I realized that as long as I tag my work and don't try to shove it into circles that don't want to see it, it's not hurting anyone!

All I'm trying to do on here is the best I can. I want to come home from my 8-5 office job and spend the little free time I have making something that brings me joy and fulfillment to make. I love exploring character interactions and "what if" scenarios and sometimes just plain old sugary sweet fluff. And it won't be everyone's cup of tea so I'll keep doing my best to tag accordingly and if I ever miss a tag, lemme know so I can fix it. :)

So yes. I'm feeling much better and will continue to gently offer my work in my little corner of the internet here- and whoever wants to see can come and go as they please. I'm just glad to keep the lovely company I have now. <3

Hey, can I see what your other Kirby ships look like?

Hahaha I'm going to be totally real, there really aren't a lot of other Kirby ships I actively think about other than metadede-!! -u-'

I don't know what it is, but that particular ship just happened to scratch an itch in my brain I didn't know I had lol. And I only really started shipping it around a year and a half ago! A King and a knight who have worked together through the ages and both have really interesting and different personalities and likes and dislikes... I have a lot of fun with them! I never thought I'd ever gain the confidence to regularly produce and share ship content on any platform. So I was happily surprised and grateful to find a little corner on the internet here to share my thoughts on them with willing readers haha.

Other than that.... I don't have a strict list of ships I stick to! I feel like I keep saying this kind of thing, but in most cases I get more enjoyment seeing other people's interpretations of ships more than producing them myself! The Kirby universe is rich with characters and a wonderful space to explore character interactions and relationships with each other (platonic or romantic or otherwise!)

I mean, I know everyone interprets Kirby character ages differently which is also cool and all! I just have my own set of established headcanons that I've been slowly cultivating since I got introduced to the series 15 or so years ago.

I personally see characters like Kirby, Bandee, the other Waddle Dees, Ribbon, Adeleine, Gooey, Prince Fluff, Elfilin, etc. as children. They're powerful and brave and very unique from each other, but still kids in my eyes.

And then there's the characters like Dedede, Meta Knight, Queen Ripple, Daroach, Hyness, etc. that are characterized definitively as adults. And other characters like Magolor, Taranza, Susie, the Mage Sisters, etc. that might be interpreted differently by different people, at least from what I have personally seen! (But I see them as adults, personally)

Again this is all my personal opinion haha. I quietly stay away from ships that mix characters from my personal child and adult categories above- (which are not exhaustive lists because this post would be ten million words if I tried to list every single Kirby character, and are my personal characterizations and not me trying to impose my views as the one, canon interpretation!).

OC x Canon is also enjoyable in my book as long as the ages and dynamics are appropriate and consensual for both parties :)

And I don't need or want to make a list of everything I stay away from or anything. I don't feel that strongly about it. I guess my biggest personal example is that if someone ships Metakirby or Dedekirby (or their respective mirror versions), I'm not going to enjoy or support that no matter what their creator's justifications/reasonings for shipping those are. I'm just going to stay away from that ardently.

Anyway, I'm not trying to be controversial or say my opinion is fact either! These are just my personal thoughts and feelings and I curate my internet experience accordingly. My interests change all the time, I just enjoy seeing character interactions and stories written with love and passion!

....If I had to pick another ship that I like thinking about, I guess I'd pick Magoranza. It's fun to think about how they'd interact with each other, and sometimes I like to think of Magolor and Taranza as Garak and Bashir from Star Trek hehehe.

TL;DR: At the time of writing this post I only like creating metadede content for Kirby ships but I quietly enjoy a variety of other people's ships.

I have been in the silliest, goofiest, fluffiest mood lately!! Metadede thoughts are shooting out of my eyeballs like laser beams HAHAHA

I tend to turn to Pinterest reposts of 2013-Tumblr era writing tips for fluffy drawing prompts, but they aren't cutting it for me these days lol. So my backlog of sugary sweet scenarios is running a little thin!

I am asking the audience kindly: if you have any metadede fluff scenarios please drop them here and I might draw them!! I could use a good sounding board! :P

Doesn't even have to be specifically romantic. I simply wish to draw the King and his Knight finding comfort and solace in each other's company. Or perhaps even some lighthearted shenanigans hehehe :3

Ohohoho like a Metadede ask blog? Unfortunately if I take any other projects on, the Roleswap comic would take me decades to finish and I need to prioritize commissions as well! :O

And to be honest my best ideas (shipping or otherwise) tend to come to me randomly haha. Like when I’m driving or looking at spreadsheets or cleaning my bathroom :P I don’t know if I’d have enough organic genuine ideas to sustain an entire blog just about it! I do love receiving asks about fun drawing ideas, sometimes they inspire me to pursue an scenario further even if I can’t guarantee getting to every single one! I appreciate every last message just the same 🥰

And thank you so much omg?! How kind!! I can’t claim to be a true master of writing relationships hahaha I don’t even have much irl experience in them! (Which is totally fine because I am really enjoying being single lol. I get to do whatever I want with my time which has been great for me) But I am a sucker for a good cheesy, fluffy romance and all related tropes so I guess that tends to come through in my ideas hahaha. Hello! I just discovered your roleswap comic and I'm eating it up, it's so gooooooood. I don't really ship MetaDede personally, but good gods the way you write them bickering and bantering and the near sync when shit gets serious makes me wanna scream in excitement ekdvsiehrhr

AND PRIMAL BANDANA DEE THO

Absolutely my favorite part of the swap. It just makes me crave for an actual Bandana Dee boss fight that actually does him justice. (also the Prince of Dreams/Beasts title itches something in my heart really well)

I'm not sure if it was intentional or if you even know who I'm talking about, but giving Bandana Dee a Scythe at some point (plus some wind abilities) really reminds me of General Gong the Hawkeye from Patapon, what with the whole high-ranking, scythe wielding, wind-adjacent thing. Probably just a coincidence tho, but I personally love it!

Hello there!! Oh my goodness, what a wonderful ask, thank you so much for telling me all of this! As a person who thrives on Words of Affirmation, these types of comments mean absolutely everything to me. <3

If I may go on a tangent about the shipping thing because I'm glad you brought that up. It's a huge complement to hear you say that because-

The Roleswap comic is not a story about romance. But it is about love.

While I am a personal lover of metadede and it fueled my initial creation of this story, I want to take the Roleswap AU in a different direction from a story that's focuses on a ship where "the main characters act the way they do because they are in love or a couple." A "partnership" like theirs can possibly be interpreted as a build up to a romance. But it doesn't have to be! So there's no blatantly romantic interactions anywhere in this story like what may be found in my non-Roleswap, specifically metadede labeled content (Like kisses, confessions of love, etc.).

Dedede and Meta do love each other, like the other protagonists of Kirby love each other. Kirby, Bandana Dee, all the other Waddle Dees, the Meta-Knights, and the friends they've made over the years. The love between many of them has developed over the entire series! They've all come a long way from fighting each other to trusting one another and even having fun together!

I see the love between the Kirby protagonists as one where they care about and want the best for each other. They may not always understand the other's thoughts and motivations. But they respect them and learn to complement each other's differences. They protect each other in battle. They grow together and learn to bring out the best in each other.

So how could two very different and powerful authority figures like Dedede and Meta come together to save their friends and family, and navigate a huge world and an unknown conflict together? That's the main question I want to present in this story.

Whatever the interpretation of the King and Knight's relationship a reader may have, I'm most happy about the fact that this comic has readers!!!

Anyway!! Back to your ask! :D

Primal Bandana Dee means a lot to me too! The only reason this comic exists is because I also wanted a cool boss fight for him, and I had just finished playing Forgotten Land for the first time. It all just branched out from there. I wish I could just spill everything I have planned for him, but alas! I have a story with a set order to tell! I will say that if anyone is worried about not seeing him until the Winter Horns area, that he will make appearances before that. Just stay tuned!

And hey. This is an AU of an existing story. We know how the canon ending went already. To keep things interesting I have to include some surprises in my version down the line somewhere, right? ;)

I also haven't heard of Patapon so the resemblance between General Gong and Bandee is a coincidence! I did look it up and General Gong looks cool!! I respect scythe wielders, haha. Thanks for telling me! If this is a game I have the ability to play it could be fun to check it out!

New Roleswap update is coming soon! I feel bad that it's been about a month and I left it on a bit of a cliffhanger. But my personal and work life is slowing down enough for me to make more progress on the next pages! Our heroes will get out of the underground tunnel soon! :O

Maybe I can offer this behind-the-scenes peek of Dedede's internal monologue in the dark tunnel as a thank you for the patience?

I actually do not! As of writing this I don't see myself designing one. When writing my own stories, I personally see Kirby and Bandee as their kids :P

It's kinda like my thing with Kirby gijinkas where I'm not designing my own versions but I love seeing other people's takes on it! There are some very lovable fankids out there and I'm so happy to see other people make their own little families heehee

I guess if I really wanted to count roleswap Elfilis as a sort of adopted fankid... I could stretch that enough haha :3

Thanks for the input!

I don’t believe that age should be a deciding factor on whether someone enjoys making or consuming content- as long as the content is not harmful to themselves or harming others. In my experience it’s not fun or productive to put those limits on oneself.

Also, the Kirby series is 30 years old and there are fans of all ages. Kirby is for anyone.

I think part of the fun of Kirby is that there’s lots of room for people to explore and interpret the characters, personalities, lore, world-building, etc. There’s as many interpretations of the Kirby world as there are stars in the sky! Some people have even made entire worlds of their own based on the series and I think that’s beautiful and lovely!

I will never ever force anyone to agree with all of my interpretations, headcanons, or shipping opinions. I don’t think anyone should.
