Thursday, May 14: D.B.C., “The Genesis Explosion”

“The Genesis Explosion” was a clear improvement over D.B.C.’s earlier material, opening Universe with a touch more Voivod-y flair.  The Canadian thrash act didn’t overtly ape their fellow countrymen, and the track owed just as much to the Bay Area scene as Montreal.  But there was a touch of prog and a little less panic, especially in the lyrics.  This was one of the cooler records to come out of the Combat roster in the late ‘80s, though apparently the label didn’t feel the same way and dropped D.B.C. a couple years later once the thrash bubble burst.  It was too bad, because “The Genesis Explosion” had more personality and didn’t deserve to be written off so quickly.

Friday, October 9: Soilwork, “Killed by Ignition”

“Killed by Ignition” first surfaced on the Japanese and Korean editions of Stabbing the Drama, and eventually made its way to worldwide release on the B-sides and rarities compilation Death Resonance.  In the latter setting, the track made sense among the other outlier tracks Soilwork recorded over the years, as it was less refined in its construction and did not fit within the fabric of the more focused Stabbing the Drama.  In a way, the song was a bridge between that record and the preceding Figure Number Five: Björn "Speed" Strid, Peter Wichers and Ola Frenning were clearly looking to build on their existing sound, but hadn’t fully shaken off some of the aimlessness and amateurishness that defined their earlier albums (to be fair, it was those very same qualities that helped endear them to international audiences).  As a result, “Killed by Ignition” had smoother playing and more controlled vocals, but not a fully defined sense of purpose.  It was simultaneously one last woolly blast and also a dress rehearsal for where Soilwork would soon go.
