Matthew Sweet Live Preview: 4/5, Metro, Chicago

Tonight, at Metro, power pop aficionado Matthew Sweet returns to Chicago after over 5 years away. Though his most recent album was 2021's underrated Catspaw, and he is purportedly at work on a new studio record, it's actually a different recent item he shared that has me excited. Earlier this year, Sweet released his July 4, 1993 show from Grant Park, recorded by Metro Mobile Recording for WXRT. The show consisted of songs from his 1991 breakout Girlfriend, yes, but also much of Altered Beast, which would come out weeks later.

You can tell from the recording why it's considered one of Sweet's best-ever shows. Though you can imagine the crowd melting on a hot day as two of the first four songs played were slower in tempo and likely unfamiliar, yet to have their studio versions drop, it's clear concertgoers ate up the band. Television's Richard Lloyd, who lent his axe to Girlfriend, plays lead guitar, while Tony Marsico's (Cruzados, Bob Dylan) on bass and Will Rigby's (the dB's) on drums. They add dynamic riffs and meaty fills on "The Ugly Truth", and their mammoth breakdown on "Evangeline" generates applause from an audience charmed by the song's otherwise bright, buoyant melodies. And even the slinkier, more psychedelic tunes like "Do It Again" and "Reaching Out" are crystal clear. The whole collection was remixed and remastered from the original DAT source by engineer Brian Kehew, and you can hear not just Sweet's banter but even moments of crowd chatter. At one point, someone says, "Nice to see you, bro, let's get lunch," like it's an outtake from "Undone (The Sweater Song)".

Of course, though devoted fans were probably foaming at the mouth hearing so much new material, the Girlfriend songs were the unabashed highlights of the set, from the Rolling Stones strut of "Does She Talk?" to the epic, cascading "Divine Intervention". When Sweet introduces the title track, he says, "If there's any song of mine you know, this might be the one," and for good reason: He never wrote another earworm quite like it. Funny enough, Lloyd did not play lead guitar on the album version (it was Robert Quine), but his distorted solo here absolutely rips. By the time Sweet plays the final two songs of the afternoon, covers of John Lennon's "Crippled Inside" and The Troggs' "I Want You", you get a true sense of his appreciation for pop music and songwriting, and at the moment he was on stage, he was the one on top.

Not to say he won't be great tonight! Sweet should deliver an excellent set. Singer-songwriter Abe Partridge opens. Doors at 7:00 PM, show at 8.

SpaceTime -- A brief history

SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. Later, Gary became part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and was one of its first presenters. Audrey Elizabeth Hale, the 28-year-old trans artist killed by police after opening fire on a private Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, covered her clothes in handwritten messages before her deadly assault in late March, according to an autopsy report.

The report acknowledges that Hale identified as a trans male but officially lists her as female. She was carrying a knife inscribed with her chosen name, Aiden, according to the autopsy.

Months after police released bodycam video that showed responding officers take down the shooter in the middle of the assault at the Covenant School, Hale's cause and manner of death were unsurprisingly determined to be homicide by gunshot wounds. She also had bruises and abrasions and "minor" blunt force trauma.

However, the report included new details about the attack — including the revelation that Hale's clothes were covered in handwritten notes, drawings and numbers. The report also noted that Hale wore a plastic anklet inscribed with "508407."

It's unclear what was written on her clothes, and the revelation comes as the city faces public records lawsuits to demand the release of Hale's manifesto and other writings, which were recovered at the crime scene and at her parents' home.

The killer slept with journals on other school shootings under her bed, Fox News Digital has previously reported, and police recovered dozens of notebooks and drawings, including two "memoirs" and a hand-drawn map of the Covenant School.

That's where Hale barged in on March 27 and opened fire on helpless students and staff members, killing three adults and three children.

Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake has said that Hale suffered from an unspecified emotional disorder and that the controversial manifesto had been shared with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit in Quantico, Virginia.

The child victims were all 9 years old: Hallie Scruggs, the daughter of the school church's pastor; Evelyn Dieckhaus; and William Kinney. The adults included 60-year-old Head of School Katherine Koonce, and custodian Michael Hill and substitute teacher Cynthia Peak, both 61.

The forensic pathologist also found a scar across Hale's forehead but none on her wrists. The toxicology report came back negative for the presence of drugs and alcohol.

The autopsy was conducted by Dr. Emily Dennison on March 28.

Hale was 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighed around 120 pounds.

One bullet passed through both lungs and Hale's spine, right to left, back to front and slightly downward, passing through an arm on its way out, according to the report. A second bullet went through the shooter's head, back to front, right to left and upward. A third struck Hale in the femur, fragmented and came out in two places, also traveling right to left.

It’s well known by now that Russia’s “partial” (in fact total) mobilization affected many beyond the reserves and people with prior combat experience, the groups Vladimir Putin said would be called up in his September 21 announcement. There are many instances of summonses arriving for people who are entitled to an exemption, like fathers of multiple children and people with serious health conditions. It happened to 28-year-old Egor (his name has been changed) who was drafted in Petersburg though he has kidney disease. He was sent to a military training camp where, he says, one conscript committed suicide and two others died of heart attacks. The publication Bumaga spoke to Egor and found out how he was called up and how he avoided being sent to the front. Here, with Bumaga’s permission, is Egor’s account.

Egor’s health problems started during his mandatory military service, though he should have been exempt

In the middle of the 2010s I did my mandatory service, even though I shouldn’t have been called up. Even during the initial medical exam (which all men undergo in order to get a registration certificate), I had headaches and a number of issues related to the arteries that supply blood to the brain, the consequences of a brain hemorrhage. Earlier, in the 2000s, I received disability status for about two years following a traumatic head and spinal injury.

When I was called up at that point, the medical commission was really hesitant. But in the end, based on the fact that one of my conditions had mysteriously disappeared (though I still had it the year before), they decided I should serve.

As I explained later, the medics didn’t note anywhere that I had a history of cerebral hemorrhage or issues with blood supply to the brain. I was assigned to a fitness group for conscripts with diseases that do not prevent military service. That, of course, was itself a violation. During my mandatory service, because of bad drinking water and cold, I developed kidney problems. At the time they seemed insignificant.

Before conscription, my kidneys were totally normal. About a year after my mandatory service, I was looking for work and discovered health problems during a physical exam for Russian Railways. They suspected kidney stones. At the end of the 2010s I was hospitalized for the first time with acute pain and obstruction of the urinary tract.

Now whoever is to blame can’t be found. But I personally think the root of the evil lies primarily with the draft commission, which sent me to mandatory service.

I still have problems with my head – I have frequent, severe headaches. I’ve fainted on the metro. In 12 years it’s happened seven or eight times.

Egor was drafted with a summons signed by another person, and sent to a unit without another exam

In my civilian life I sell children’s wheelchairs, and also as a hobby, mostly for free, I give psychological consultations.

[In September 2022] I got a summons that another person had already signed (he rents an apartment that’s registered to me). 

I was not pleased. But I didn’t hide from anyone, I appeared as the summons said with a packet of documents. I wanted to explain the mistake at the enlistment office: I can’t be drafted because of a large number of health issues. [Bumaga’s editors have seen copies of Egor’s medical records and they support his claim that he is unfit for mobilization.] The military commissar refused to listen to me and announced that they’d do another exam on the unit in Kamenka. [The medical examination should have been carried out in the enlistment office.]

I wound up in Kamenka, where the unit was stationed, at the end of September. Town representatives told me that I would be serving in the infantry, even though it was incompatible with my diagnoses. I’ll be in constant pain if I serve in open areas in fall or winter. But they assured me that the medical commission would start working only on October 3.

The atmosphere on the unit where at least three conscripts died

In Kamenka, it was not clear what was going on in the military unit itself. There was no leadership, three or four officers were trying to run everything. They themselves, those poor guys, slept three to five hours a night because, in addition to dealing with personnel, they had mountains of paperwork. That’s another question, not about my problems but about the state’s. As it turned out, the state was just not ready for mobilization on any level.

There were several emergency incidents in Kamenka with fatal outcomes. Two conscripts had heart failure, one of them was named Aleksey. If he hadn’t died, he would have gone the following day for an exam at the Military Medical Academy.

Another one shot himself during target practice. It’s lucky he didn’t decide to shoot others. His finger didn’t remain on the trigger when the gun fell, so no one was hurt. I heard about other deaths, but they’re not verified.

The mental state of conscripts and contract soldiers

After that conscript shot himself, a psychological service started working in the unit. It began referring people with panic attacks, depression, and anxiety disorders to the Military Medical Hospital. This didn’t happen before the suicide.

I’m a psychologist myself by training. I experienced all this particularly acutely. On smoke breaks, more than one person said he’d come talk to me. And guys came, surprisingly.

The contract soldiers have already been under fire, they go [to the front] like it’s just a day at work. They came to me with everyday problems, like family relationships. As a rule, many who complain of psychological problems experience cognitive dissonance. Like, they were against the war, but now they’re for it [because they’re being sent to fight]. Most of all they come because they fear death, of course. Many are horrified. They’ve held a gun only because they took an oath to do it. People don’t want to kill. Or die.

In terms of negative trends, I noticed that after the target practice incident, many began to avoid more guarded people. It’s alarming, because those guys need the opposite – special attention, support, possibly medical help. But a lot of them won’t ask for it themselves. And that can have tragic results.

Egor was almost sent to the front without any training, but instead he wound up in the hospital

The day after I got to the unit, I made my medical documents public. They were received without enthusiasm. But on Monday, October 3, the first day the medical commission was working, I was given a referral to a neurosurgeon and a urologist at the Military Medical Academy – in ten days. In addition [to chronic health issues,] I got an infection which made my feet swell up, and I couldn’t stand or put on shoes. Thanks to that, I was exempted from firearms and tactical training.

The problem was that in all that time only two cars left for the Military Medical Academy. They had eight seats each, none of which I got. And then, within a few days I was on the list of people leaving for Belgorod. At the very least it smacks of idiocy and wasted money. I repeat, I did not go through even the most minimal training because of my injured legs.

The day before the departure, I was supposed to be taken to the Academy, but at the last minute my name was replaced by another – the heart failure case. From stress and, I confess, from fear that I’d be sent [to war] the next day, I got a [kidney] stone. The doctor on duty, a surgeon, made a very quick and accurate diagnosis, performed aesthesia, and called an ambulance. I thought the spasm was psychosomatic, but a work-up showed that it wasn’t.  

I’m now in the hospital in Vyborg. It’s very unclear what I should do when I’m discharged, how to get to either the unit or the Military Medical Academy. But it will become clear in time. My case, obviously, is not as outrageous as, for example, the mobilization of the father of four young children. But I’m still convinced that there’s nothing legal about any of this.

Life Update: December 2023

It has been a while since I last posted an entry in this blog. It is almost the end of the year 2023, and since my last posting a lot of things have already occured, and at the same time despite the fact that I do not currently have a job since February 2023, I still continue to busy myself with several things such as writing a journal, learning Japanese language on 2 mobile applications, reading a bible plan, and watching videos on Youtube to keep me occupied on a daily basis. On weekends, I have the opportunity to spend quality time with my family and we go to familiar places around Metro Manila to relax, unwind, and gain new and meaningful experiences.

My daily journal is rather helpful in detailing the things and experiences that I do daily, even if it is only short. Unlike last May 2023, I no longer watch NBA videos on Youtube and I even unsubscribed in their channel. On the other hand, I re-ignited my passion for foreign travel particularly Japan travel and I have subscribed in a Japan travel channel and surprisingly I was able to watch all of the channel's uploaded videos. There is also an increase in the amount of our family city and provincial travel for the 2nd half of the year, as we have went to several places to visit relatives and attend important occasions.

This year has also seen my application as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) initiated yearly by the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines. I was able to see the Embassy once again upon submission of documents and I do hope that I might get shortlisted in the process. If ever that will happen I need to prepare for an interview and teaching demonstration. Best of luck on my end.

For the first time in my life, I was able to attend multiple sessions of the Oshaberi Salon, an almost monthly event held by The Japan Foundation, Manila last October to December 2023 that aims to train the Nihongo (Japanese) speaking skills of all the attendees and form connections with each other by means of communication and activities. I enjoyed all of the meetings that I have attended so far, and I also learn how to socialize and mingle with other like-minded individuals who share the same interest. It was truly amazing events and we even received freebies at the end of every event. I plan to attend all sessions next year as well.

In conclusion, there are a lot of experiences this year that I could no longer mention in this entry, but as I have said before, I maintain a daily journal which summarizes the things that happened in my life for a day, so at least there is a record. Hopefully, we could all close this year with a happy and contented heart despite the challenges and hardships that we face daily. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2024 to all!
