I don't get why they made tacos. Like they just?? Don't do savoury foods on bake off?? And clearly none of them have had Mexican tacos, just the weird crunchy kind brits know with no actual flavors
i mean they make pizzas and savory breads and other items as long as it has some baking element to it! but tacos... really don't???? they should have made something else entirely LMAO, or like do some sort of savory pastry inspired by mexican flavors so they could have done like a chorizo or mole or birria filling or something else ya know? or like a pan de guayaba where they have to do multiple rolls with a specific design which they do for other technicals all the time... OR BOLLILOS OR PORQUITOS COME ON!!!!!!! or like they have to make a pastry that pairs with a hot chocolate and have that be a whole thing LIKE IDK MAN!!! there's so much else they could have done 😭

So on the topic of food and racism—
So like. I feel STRONGLY that food is a great definer of a lot of stuff about culture and social standards (as a history nerd and amateur baker). And that 9/10 times regional cuisine is ONLY good if you get it in that region or from someone who grew up there/whose close family are from there. like so many people treat British and American cuisine as both original and the best.
Like bud have you ever HAD fried rice from a restaurant where the same waitress has been serving tables since she was six and the entire place is one Spanish-speaking family? Or homemade pitzels and soft Italian sugar cookies and Italian wedding soup from my Italian great aunt (seriously shout out to Dolly she’s an amazing chef)? Or jerk chicken in Jamaica????? Scrapple and pickles picked up from Pennsylvania Dutch folks? Ice Cream freshly made by a dairy farmer (ik that’s not regional but damnnnn is it good)????????
Like people who do the “I only like NoRmAl FoOd” thing have had Taco Bell and Panda Express and called it their regional cuisine for the year.
No yeah, I live in texas so I can fully attest to this when it comes to mexican food. My friends and I joke that the closer you get to the border the better the mexican restaurants get, but really family owned and operated places are the fucking BEST. I feel bad for people living up north who think they're getting good hispanic food. you ain't. you just ain't. come to any of the 1000 places named Casa Garcia's/Mara's/Rio/Grande, WHATEVER we got a lot of casa's around here and they all fucking slap. You think that's salsa? You're eating tomato sauce. Places that people would usually describe as not ideal are always the best too (small, maybe a bit run down, been there for fucking decades) but people will always opt for the newer shinier chain restaurants instead. You ain't lived till you had real flautas or real tamales. My great aunt used to be the tamale dealer, she'd prepare them and my grandma would pick em up and cook them with chili and cheese for family events- FUCKING HEAVEN.
Even the fried rice i was talking about came from this family owned chinese place that's been around for fucking ever, i eat there way too much cuz the food is just ALWAYS top tier.
Good food is just. GOOD.
