welcome back to watchmojo where we are counting down ren's top 5 mike murdock moments
5. Killing Bullseye that one time
Tumblr media
so, technically this didnt ACTUALLY happen (or itd be my number one lmfao), it was in a dream Matt was having while he was dying. but listen, okay, mike was still so real for this. bullseye was this close to killing Matt and Mike comes outta nowhere, declares his love for Karen Page, and boom shoots the guy right off a fuckin skyscraper how could i NOT talk about this, okay?
4. Being thrown to the ground
Tumblr media Tumblr media
listen, he looks good a little roughed up, alright? what are you, a fuckin cop or somethin? aint it my right as a living, breathing, human being to enjoy pretty boys being thrown around a lil sometimes? damn
for reference: the first photo was when he was pretending to be Matt, trying to deal with some mob bosses. one of them got angry and pushed him down. the second was when mike was first introduced in the soule/noto run. bad guys bust into the bar hes at and matt throws him behind cover lmfao
3. this EXCELLENT reintroduction in the 2020 annual
Tumblr media
the 2020 annual is when we get mike's whole backstory and THIS is the first panel we see him in. this is genuinely poetic. mike murdock wouldnt exist without first being made-up by matt (and matt pretending to be mike). we all know the story of matt losing his eye sight, he pushed a person out of the way of a van that was carrying toxic chemicals, blah blah
well. here we are yet again. except everythings flipped on its head. mike is pretending to be matt. he's jumping in front of this van to make the guys think theyve hit him so he can help rob them. he isnt saving anyone but he sure as hell is putting himself in danger. it sets the tone for his whole character. its just. yeah. this was fantastic, honestly.
2. his reaction to butch assualting hammerhead
Tumblr media Tumblr media
okay so this was the moment in vol 6 that genuinely caught my complete attention. this was the moment i realized just how different and special mike was.
murdocks are known for, well, violence. jack was a boxer, he wanted matt to grow up and be nothing like him. he didnt want matt to fight only for matt to become daredevil later in life. we are led to believe there's almost this inherent violent streak to being "a murdock"
this is after a mob boss meeting, mike is watching hammerhead (a boss) from the shadows, helping butch keep track of him. he lets butch know where hammerhead is. butch proceeds to threaten hammerhead, bash his head into a car, yell at him, then gouge one of his eyes out.
and, well. this was mike's reaction.
this is the first time we are given a glimpse of mike's morals, his values. besides how much he cares for the people close to him, we find out he has an aversion to violence. he's a career criminal, i'm not saying he doesnt know how to throw a punch, but he goes out of his way to avoid it.
he's repeatedly shown to be a voice of reason, a mediator, and every time a violent solution is brought up, he immediately protests and wants to figure out a different way. that's fascinating to me.
he's breaking the mold of being "a murdock" in the most unexpected way. we think he must be so much like jack to so easily get involved in crime (with even jack saying so himself), but here we are shown that's wrong.
i wish we could've gotten his and butch's convo directly after this. also, another thing, mike's reaction to people he cares about doing something he doesnt approve of isn't to get angry, it's to worry. which, again. fascinating. admirable, even.
when he finds out matt's "in rehab" he's worried, and yeah a little angry, but mostly concerned for his brother. even after this incident, we are seen mike being very worried later. he's concerned for butch's mental state and wants to stop him from making any rash decisions (ie killing someone)
but, yeah. sorry for the damn essay (and heres another) anyways
trying to save wilson fisk from being assassinated
Tumblr media
christs sake hes so fucking gorgeous. also ignore matt being an asshole here because that's all he ever did when mike was around.
this was another very interesting moment in which we see mike's strong morals on full display. we are repeatedly told mike isn't the kind of person to be trusted, he doesnt take things seriously, he's morally ambiguous yada yada. and yet.
as soon as he finds out butch is planning to maybe (which he later find out he's correct about) put a hit on wilson fisk, wilson fuckin fisk, he wants to stop it. mike is under the impression that killing someone is not a line you can cross and come back from. he's deeply concerned about the path his friend is headed down.
In this scene, he's coming to visit foggy in the hospital to talk to him about maybe getting butch out of jail while also hoping to catch daredevil there. he does, obviously.
his full intention is to team up with daredevil to try and take fisk down. mike thinks if he can take fisk down it'll stop butch from trying to kill him.
him going to daredevil also shows his ability to extend his compassion to others. he has no fuckin reason to trust daredevil. daredevil has done nothing but insult mike, yell and argue with him, and even rough him up a couple of times. and still, mike decides to reach out because he knows daredevil is supposed to be a good guy. he also knows daredevil is supposed to be matt's close friend.
he brings it up more than once that the reason he trusts daredevil is because of matt being his friend (despite mike and matt supposedly not being close).
so, yeah, i got a little off-topic, but that's why i love this scene so much. it shows not only how deeply mike cares for people, but also his compassion and aversion to violence. he's trying to take care of his best friend and trust daredevil despite their differences. he's showing how good of a person he is and how dedicated he is to his cause of a "bloodless" coup.
-----
if you made it this far fuckin THANKS, mike is my favoritest most specialist boy lmao and this turned into a character study high key but im not mad about it

honesly never not losing it about this one panel from the waid & samnee run. an arc that plays with matt's own pride (and hubris), about faking one's death, stolen identities ---- and then samnee gives us a panel with the Infamous Hat & Glasses on the foreground while matt talks about spectacle (the show of defying death) and i simply LOSE MY WHOLE MIND.
Tumblr media
also hi!!! i probably show up on your notifs a lot. i'm a roleplay blog for matt and all those metas and moments help me better navigate the psyche of one (or two? certainly not more than three right) murdock as i also go through the (sometimes great, sometimes ardous) process of reading daredevil comics. though who am i kidding, i just end up back on vol 3 and vol 4. it's a curse.
It's the BEST! The strategic cameos by the Mike hat and glasses throughout this run were genius, and this is a favorite. Funny, thematic, impactful...just perfect.
And hi! Yes, I've seen you around, and I'm so glad my blog has been a helpful resource! Matt must be a very fun character to roleplay; he's so complex. And yes, vol. 3 and 4 are comfort reads for me too. I go back to them a lot. I've read volume 3 #1 so many times, I could probably recite it word-for-word...

I want you to know that i found you account and have been jealous at you extensive knowledge about Matt Murdock/ Mike Murdock. As someone who wants to be all knowing entity like you, what comics do you suggest starting off with? How do you acquire such an extensive knowledge? like i'm genuinely jealous (but not like in a mean way but in a way i wanna be just like you)
i am definitely not a daredevil all knowing entity i actually attribute that title to @daresplaining who writes some of the best daredevil meta i've ever seen.
i do have a daredevil reading list though, it isn't mine and i cannot, for the life of me, find the post/account that i rbed it from but it's an extremely comprehensive and detailed list and based on that list, i recommend starting with the 'bronze age' and working your way up but only cause that's where i wish i started. realistically, just read through the list and choose whichever interests you the most and make your way through runs from there cause there are a lot and it can get intimidating.
i also made a mike murdock reading list about a month and a half ago if you're just interested in him for now!
there's also daredevil: noir that i'm a really big fan of and while i recommend reading other earth interpretations of matt's character i'd say to leave that alone until you've gotten to the year it was published in the main continuity (2009). same goes for spider gwen but please don't read spider gwen just looking for matt; he's not the main character.
i hope this helps though!! have fun!!

Capítulos contidos nesta edição: Verdade/Consequência 1 Um dia a mais Verdade/Consequência 2, 3 e 4 O Punho vermelho . . Daredevil 101: Foggy (Finally!) Finds Out
Last time on Daredevil 101, Matt was still pretending to be a) dead and b) a Brand-New Super Badass Armored Daredevil. Well, that’s all about to come crashing down when writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Ron Wagner take over!
[Content warning: violence against sex workers, brief discussion of transphobia, fatshaming/body policing, a lot of discussion/portrayal of mental illness and suicidal ideation.]
We begin with Matt thoroughly disgusted with this new life he’s chosen for himself:
Tumblr media
So I’m guessing DeMatteis didn’t enjoy the Daredevil comics immediately preceding his run?
Anyway it’s good to know Matt’s been doing his squats.
But Matt’s not just cranky about his new life - he’s forgetting things, losing time, waking up in unexpected places...
Tumblr media
...which is pretty dangerous when you lead the kind of life Matt does.
Meanwhile, Foggy encounters an unexpected visitor:
Tumblr media
Yes, it’s...Original Daredevil! Or someone claiming to be the OG Daredevil, at least. He flirts affectionately yet cryptically with Foggy, then scampers away, leaving Foggy feeling very confused.
Meanwhile, Matt, between crimefighting bouts, is thinking a lot about Glori, and having bloody, disturbing nightmares:
Tumblr media
In the morning, he discovers that this particular nightmare has crossed over into waking life:
Tumblr media
While Matt was asleep, someone shredded his armor, which is tricky because it’s...you know, armor. Plus there’s the threatening note. Who could it be? An old enemy? The mysterious yellow Daredevil?
With his armor ruined, Matt puts on his old red costume and heads to "his” grave - or at least, the grave that has his name on it and Hellspawn’s body buried beneath it. But when he gets there, the grave has been dug up. Matt panics, thinking maybe Hellspawn has come back to life:
Tumblr media
After tearing up his fingers, Matt gets deep enough in the grave to discover that there is a body in there - but then he realizes he’s not alone:
Tumblr media
Yep, Karen’s been spotting Yellow Daredevil around town and instinct led her out to Matt’s grave. Awwwkward.
Matt panics and bolts, leaving Karen even more confused than before. She meets with Foggy the next day to discuss all of these Daredevils running around and who they might be...or not be:
Tumblr media
I do really love Karen and Foggy’s friendship, which is decades-long and very deep and sincere, whether Matt’s around or not. Anyway this conversation is interesting to me because the meta references to “the way [Daredevil] used to be back in the old [days]” is the sort of thing you would see a lot in comics from about ten years ago, but not so much twenty years ago, when this was published. Foggy’s ahead of the game, I guess! (And as despairing as this story is, it does foretell a brief return to a cheerful, swashbuckling Daredevil, which I always enjoy.)
(...And yes, both Karen and Yellow Daredevil stepping in on that last panel are policing Foggy’s breakfast/concern-trolling him, because of course they are.]
Anyway, speak of the devil...
Tumblr media
Yellow Daredevil insists that he is the original Daredevil, that Red Daredevil (who Karen knows to be Matt) was second, and that Armored Daredevil is third, and a pretender to the throne. Then he scampers away, all giddy and devil-may-care.
Three things to note:
1. Cool assault, Yellow Daredevil. >:(
2. “I know for a fact that till now, there’s only been one Daredevil!” Why isn’t Foggy saying “Uh, Karen, what about Mike Murdock, the original Daredevil?”
3. If those are all $50s, Yellow Daredevil’s laying down $200 right there. How expensive are these bagels???
Meanwhile, Matt fights the villain of this storyline, a massive and incredibly strong murderer called “Sir.” I have not included any panels with Sir because this is one of the most viciously transphobic storylines I have ever encountered (guess what Sir’s big secret is, and why they love masculinity and hate women!) and honestly I don’t want to put that imagery in anyone’s eyes. But be forewarned if you decide to go looking for this storyline on your own.
Anyway, Sir steals Matt’s (red) costume for the totemic masculine power of it or whatever, so now Matt doesn’t have the black armored costume or the red one. Also, it’s a pretty brutal fight that does a number on him both physically and emotionally.
While all this is going on, Karen puts two and two together, and decides to take action:
Tumblr media
That’s not a helpful answer, Karen.
(No, Foggy’s “older brother” is never mentioned again. I think we can safely discard him as a continuity glitch.)
Meanwhile, Yellow Daredevil has realized that he doesn’t know who he is. He’s not Murdock - Murdock was the second Daredevil - but then where does that leave him?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was Matt the whole time!!! (Honestly, I was legit surprised by this the first time I read this storyline.) The swashbuckler, the grim avenger, the conman, the depressive...they’re all Matt.
That said, Matt is disassociating strongly enough to have created a whole separate personality he didn’t know about, which is a little bit more than just an identity crisis. (Apologies for the inexact or perhaps incorrect terminology - I am not a mental health professional and neither is DeMatteis. Just doing my best to describe the plot in layman’s terms!) So what triggered this sudden breakdown?
Tumblr media
Remember Man Without Fear, when Matt accidentally pushed a prostitute out a window and she fell to her death? Well, it seems he suppressed that memory out of guilt, but Glori’s similar death by falling has dredged it up again, and his split personality was an attempt to escape that guilt.
Unable to copy with any of this, he basically goes catatonic - and that’s when Karen and Foggy find him:
Tumblr media
It took thirty years, but Foggy finally learned his best friend’s biggest secret(s). There is less crying here than in “Nelson v. Murdock,” but there is the biggest bathroom in the world, so...there’s that?
Next up: the aftermath.

The war for New York City is beginning and Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist are needed on deck! Watch the first trailer for The Defenders.
Courtesy of NETFLIX
Since we found out last summer that NETFLIX had The Defenders in the works, we’ve been so excited!
It reminds me of Avengers. Yes, we adore each individual characters and look forward to those films, but there’s something so epic about all that Marvel star-power joining together to face off against a big-bad and save the world. I have the exact same feeling about the upcoming The Defenders series.
This morning NETFLIX shared the first official trailer from the series and there’s so much action-adventurey, hilarious goodness.
Within the first seconds of the trailer, we watch these (not so separate) worlds collide, as Misty Knight (Simone Missick) interrogates a handcuffed Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter). They don’t get very far before Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) steps in and offers his legal services to a slightly confused Jessica.
It’s pretty amazing (and hilarious) to watch Matt, Jessica, Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones) meet one another! From there, the story unfolds: the war for New York City is beginning and all four heroes will be needed on deck to make a stand against Sigourney Weaver’s villainous character.
Watch below:
Guys, I didn’t realize how much I missed Jessica Jones until I watched that trailer. Her snark and badassery give me so much life! And did you see that Elektra (Elodie Yung) might maybe be back?
What are you most looking forward to in The Defenders?
Check out 15 images from the upcoming series (out August 18), which give us more of a glimpse into this awesome team up.

Marvel’s The Defenders follows Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones). A quartet of singular heroes with one common goal – to save New York City. This is the story of four solitary figures, burdened with their own personal challenges, who realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.

While we’re still waiting on official confirmation of the rumor that Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil, will appear in the upcoming third Spider-Man movie as Peter Parker’s lawyer, it seems the fate of one of Cox’s co-stars on Netflix’s The Defenders might be starting to take shape.

Fiche
Intégré au Marvel Cinematic Universe Titre The Defenders Titre VO Marvel’s The Defenders Créateurs Douglas Petrie, Marco Ramirez Acteurs Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, Finn Jones, Elodie Yung, Jessica Henwick, Scott Glenn, Sigourney Weaver, Rosario Dawson Saison 1 Nombre d’épisodes 8 Date de sortie 18 / 08 / 2017 Format 55 mn Genre Action, Drame, Fantastique, Science fiction, Thriller Chaîne: Netflix
Conclusion
7/10

alright mike-enjoyers, this can't be an accident, right? like. this has gotta be on purpose, right?
after mike murdock becomes a real person, the first place we see him is 'the bar with no name.' in ish 7 of vol 8, matt encounters wolverine possessed by the demon lust in 'the bar with no name.'
after having a rather transformative fight where lust is exorcised from wolverine and matt's white suit is stained red, we are given the above line from logan about matt 'denying' who he is.
so far, each demon has represented a sin that matt has committed by continuing to deny who he really is (daredevil). mike murdock's character was invented by matt to express parts of himself that he denies. mike murdock was also originally daredevil (according to the lies that matt told).
with this particular demon, lust, it is referencing not only matt's lust for a fight, but his lust for life and how he defines it. that includes taking risks, doing morally gray things, living on the edge etc. matt expressing those parts of himself was the original intent of mike's character/persona.
not only that, I feel like the bright shirt matt is wearing could be a nod to mike as well. but logan (standing in the bar where mike was introduced as a real person) and talking about how matt needs to make 'peace' rather than 'denying' himself feels like a pretty clear nod to me.

Marvel – The Defenders

All your (beautiful, amazing) Mike Murdock meta keeps making me think of my best friends growing up, who are identical twins. Always very distinct individuals to me who I never mixed up, not even on the phone from just 'hello?', but other people did all the time. They hated that, but they also definitely used it to fuck with people sometimes, and so even though everything I know about Mike Murdock comes from tumblr I keep imagining him and Matt fucking with people that way just for shits and giggles and I love it
i love that so much!!! matt and mike did canonically switch places and it's inferred that it happened often so!! your comparison is very much validated.

Jack Murdock undeniably loved both of his boys but it doesn’t change the fact that he definitely played favorites and abused Mike.
Like, if it wasn’t obvious, dragging your son into a ring while you’re pissed off, throwing him a couple boxing gloves and – while your son is actively protesting fighting you – punching him, is abuse. That wasn’t Jack teaching Mike to fight. That was abuse.
It’s sad that Mike had to have certain truths thrust on him way before Matt did.
He never had the illusion that Jack was a strongly moralized father. He didn’t have the illusion of Maggie being dead. Mike never got to think that Jack was proud of him.
And it’s these illusions that heavily contributed to Matt becoming the person he did. It’s the lack of them that heavily contributed to Mike becoming who he did.

There's something that really hurts about Mike trying to offer Butch a solution to his problems so he doesn't have to kill anyone only for Butch to get angry at Mike and saying he "never takes anything serious." And then, despite this, the next time we see Mike he's calling Butch to try and make amends.
There's something about him stopping by to bring Foggy flowers and Matt immediately assuming Mike is lying and in general Matt thinking Mikes always trying to run some "get rich quick" scheme while Mike's actually trying to do good that. really hurts.
There's something about Mike repeatedly showing loyalty, dedication, morality, and bravery only for people to call him flaky, unserious, sleazy, and a fake that really. really. hurts.
